Mercedes Reveals the 2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe M

ercedes-AMG has recently unveiled the all-new 2017 C63 Coupe which essentially is a combination of the C63 Sedan and the recently revealed Mercedes-Benz C-Class. The C63 Coupe features a very expressive exterior that has a bold, athletic look while still maintaining its elegance as all Mercedes vehicles do. The flared wheel arches and long aluminum hood enhance the sporty look, as does the aggressive-looking low, arrow-shaped twin blade grill with AMG lettering. Under the hood of the new coupe will be the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine that will produce 469 horsepower in standard trim or 503 horsepower in the C63 S version. This will be able to propel the car from 0-60 mph in just 3.9 seconds. The engine will be paired to an AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sport transmission that can be controlled using steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Additionally, the driver is able to influence the characteristics of the C63 with four available AMG Dynamic Select transmission modes, with the C63 S receiving the additional race mode. The AMG C63 Coupe was officially unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but deliveries to North America will be delayed until the summer of 2016.

IndyCar Driver Justin Wilson Passes Away at the Age of 37 After Freak Incident

IndyCar driver Justin Wilson has sadly passed away at the age of 37, a day after he was struck in the head by a piece of debris during an IndyCar Series race at Pocono Raceway on August 23, 2015. Wilson was hit by debris from the car of Sage Karam, who was leading the race at the time when his car spun out in Turn 1 on lap 179 of the 200 lap race, sending the nose cone of his car airborne and striking Wilson in the head as it fell towards the ground. Wilson was immediately extricated from his car by safety crews at the track and was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he was reportedly in a coma, but succumbed to his injuries the next day. Wilson, a native of Sheffield, England, had previously competed in Formula One and won the 2001 International Formula 3000 championship as well as the 24 Hours of Daytona. He is survived by his wife Julia and daughters Jane and Jessica. Our thoughts go out to his family. Publishing Schedule: RPM is published 6 times per year by RPM Media Inc. Every second month. Performance Sport Coupe

The 2015 Lexus RC F Story and photos by Gerry Frechette

T

here is no shortage of premium-branded performance sports coupes on the market. It seems that their purveyors all want to offer a car that would perform very well on a track, even though very few of them ever get on one. Lexus built the IS F sedan with V8 power for several years, but the image of performance still dictates only two doors to many people, so the new RC coupe has received the F treatment, and the RC F is the result. With the German cars in the class being the obvious target, it would have been easy for Lexus to build a Japanese version of an M4 or C63, but that is not the way the RC F has been done. Bucking the trend towards smaller force-fed engines, for example, the RC F is equipped, like the IS F before it, with a 5.0-litre V8, now with 467 horsepower at higher rpm (7,300 redline), thanks to titanium valves, lighter connecting rods, higher compression and bigger intake ports. It also makes a glorious roar at wideopen throttle, surely the best reason to have one versus a turbo V6 making the same power. The only transmission available is an 8-speed automatic, with manual shift capability.

Technology abounds in the RC F, of course, as the people driving these cars expect to be able to tailor their driving experience to taste. The Drive modes selectable include Eco (dulled responses), Normal (self-explanatory), Sport (sharper throttle response and shifting), and Sport+ (sharper steering, less intervention of stability control – also known as drifting.) Nowhere in all this variability is there any adjustment for suspension firmness, an odd omission in a car like this. The ride could be called firm, but not harsh, a compromise that we suspect most RC F drivers will be perfectly fine with in day-to-day driving. The available Performance Package includes a Torque Vectoring Differential that sends power to the outside rear wheel for more cornering traction. There are three settings - normal, slalom, and track – and they all reduce understeer, as long as the throttle is applied and there is some torque being sent to the wheels. It adds some 66 pounds over the standard Torsen diff, while the carbon fibre roof and rear wing included with the Package take about 15 pounds off. In any case, the RC F weighs in right around the two-ton mark, some 400 pounds more than the M4, for example.

Inside, the design is unique in this class, with lots of straight lines and several surface levels on the dashboard. Gone is the mouse-like controller on the centre console, replaced now by a clicking touchpad like on a laptop computer. The driver and passenger are treated to perhaps the most comfortable and

supportive sport seats in the performance segment, with a unique pattern of stitching reminiscent of a very-well muscled human back. On the other hand, the foot-operated parking brake is surprisingly primitive. The exterior design of the RC F is certainly like none of its competitors, as it makes up for some of its civilized driving nature with what apparently has become the Lexus signature, a spindle-shaped

grille that is an enormous, gaping maw that you can see coming a mile away. It’s perhaps a bit excessive, but at least it works better esthetically on a high-performance coupe than on a luxury sedan. The rest of the coupe body is very tautly and attractively proportioned. The RC F is more of an all-rounder than its German rivals, less capable on a track due to its weight and softer suspension, but with plenty of performance that is at a level that might be more accessible on the street, wrapped in a very dramatic body, accompanied by a glorious soundtrack, and commanded from stupendous seats. Lexus goes its own way with the RC F, and it all just works.

The Sophisticated Supercar 2015 McLaren 650S Spider

Story and photos by Russell Purcell

W

oking, England is the home base for one of the most storied names in racing. McLaren Automotive is renowned the world over for its excellence in engineering and design, not to mention the fact that the British company is the most successful Formula 1 team in history. McLaren is growing, and to accomplish this task, the dynamic company is expanding its catalogue to include a host of new models, including the stunning McLaren 650S. The McLaren 650S is available in both Coupe and Spider form, and although it is based on an existing model, the stunning MP4-12C with which it shares many parts, the car itself represents a new model for the boutique supercar builder. Beneath its slinky exterior, the 650S rides on a carbon-fibre reinforced polymer chassis that is derived from that of the aforementioned MP4-12C. The car also utilizes the same 3.8-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine as the and torque. The 650S is armed with 641 horsepower and 500 pounds-feet 12C, although it has been further enhanced to develop more horsepower of torque, the latter of which kicks in with maximum effect at a relatively low 3,000 rpm. The car’s prodigious power is delivered to the rear wheels through a sevenspeed, dual-clutch auto manual transmission that is lightning quick, and acceleration runs to 100 kilometres-per-hour from a standstill are possible in a face-slapping three seconds. McLaren claims that the 650S is capable of reaching speeds of up to 333 km/h while the Spider variant tops out at 328 km/h. These figures put the 650S in rather elite company and establish the model as one of the fastest production vehicles in the world - a noteworthy achievement for a car that costs significantly less than its slightly speedier competitors. The 650S Spider weighs slightly more than the coupe variant, which is expected, as open cars always require additional reinforcement in other areas to preserve the structural rigidity that is lost by removing the fixed roof structure. Fortunately, this weight penalty is a rather meagre 40 kilograms, 18 RPM Oct / Nov 2015

an amount that has very little negative effect on the vehicle’s performance numbers. The top can be operated at speeds up to 30 km/h and full deployment (up or down) can be accomplished in a scant 17 seconds. The car’s styling is sleek, sophisticated, and almost timeless. It carries hints of the 12C as well as many cues from the company’s halo machine, the stunning P1. McLaren’s design team strives to maximize the aerodynamic efficiency of every product they create, so it should come as no surprise that the 650S is slippery by design, and the car benefits from a host of innovative technologies that have trickled down from the company’s racing program to enhance downforce and direct the flow of air where needed. Two over-sized vertical intakes reside just aft of the 650S’s entry doors to deliver clean air to the car’s radiators in an effort to keep the turbocharged V8 engine cool. A series of splitters, diffusers, panels, vents and spoilers direct the movement of air beneath the car to help cool various components, further induce downforce, or reduce turbulence. Interestingly, McLaren’s engineers have even managed to incorporate the car’s exhaust system into their aerodynamic strategy, and its seemingly odd placement amidships at the rear of the car actually produces a valuable vortex of air which further gressive or panic stop situations. The integral strength of this structure offers a level of crash protection that is unparalleled by other materials or cabin designs. Visibility is quite good for such a low slung machine, although the rear view can be a challenge for shorter individuals. Segment Competitors: BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK, Nissan 370Z The Skinny: The Boxster is Porsche’s entry-level model and since arriving nearly 20 years ago, it has been tweaked, but has stayed true to the original vision of the car which was a mid-engine, two-seat roadster that is as much fun to look at as it is to drive. Having undergone a redesign in 2013, the Boxster is now larger and much more comfortable inside. Pros: The Boxster truly is one of the most fun experiences you will have behind the wheel of a car. Cons: Not much to add here, other than less-than-amazing fuel economy should you put your foot into it often. The Verdict: The Boxster has been regarded as one of the best handling cars in the world thanks to its mid-engine, lightweight design and is certainly not hard on the eyes. If you’re in the market for a 2-seat roadster, look no further.

It comes available with a 3.7L V6, the 5.0L V8 and, for the first time, a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine as our test model was equipped with. Segment Competitors: Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, Hyundai Genesis Coupe The Skinny: The Mustang certainly has been well received after its full redesign for the 2015 model year, and with its new engine option it is able to appeal to a wider variety of customers than it ever has before. The new look is outstanding, as is the interior with sport-inspired Recaro seats and easy-to-use functionality. Pros: The new look of the Mustang is absolutely awesome and we have to admit we were impressed by the power generated from the new 4-cylinder option. Cons: Although we were impressed with the 4-cylinder turbo, we did miss the traditional sound and power generated by the classic 5.0L engine. The Verdict: The 4-cylinder turbocharged Mustang provides the look and feel of a muscle car with the efficiency and technology of a compact. 24 RPM Oct / Nov 2015

WINTER TIRE GUIDE twice a year. But I think that once you look past the convenience benefit, there are so many more benefits to having a separate set of winter and summer tires. Let’s start at longevity. Yes I know, it’s well known that winter tires aren’t the longest lasting. But you need to look at it differently. You’re only using them for (at most) half the year. The rest of the year, you’re on your summers or all-seasons. With an all-weather, you’re using that tire all-year-round. And we all know that a tire with any sort of winter compounding gets nice and soft and melts away when the weather gets warm, right? So it makes sense that this one tire that you’re using all-year-round would wear quicker than two sets of tires that only get used for half the year each.

The Great Debate: Winter or All-Weather? Story by Arch Linsao, photos courtesy of the manufacturers o I know I’ll turn a few heads with this one, but I think it’s time for me S to finally put my thoughts on this topic in the hands of everyone who continues to read my yearly rant about winter tires. And to all of you regular readers, you know I’m quite opinionated (some would even call me “passionate”) about this topic, and that hasn’t changed one bit this year. With that being said, the question remains: Am I a fan of this all-weather craze? The answer is no. Now before you all freak out, let me explain. The idea that one tire is able to eliminate the need for a winter tire is mindboggling to me, yet many are jumping on the train like it’s the greatest thing since chicken wings. I’m just not quite sold on it. Personally, I think convenience is the only thing all-weather tires have going for them. But since they’re gaining popularity, I guess that’s enough for some people. Not for me, though.

This leads into the cost-benefit of running a winter/summer setup. Many argue that it’s cheaper to run an all-weather, since you’re only paying for one set of tires. Well for initial investment, I guess I have to agree. But if you take the longevity benefit into mind, it actually isn’t much cheaper. That single set of all-weather tires will cost less at first, but won’t last as long as two sets of seasonal tires. So in the long run, since you’ll have to replace that one set of all-weathers sooner than you would your two individual sets of summer/winter tires, there isn’t really much cost savings after all. Now, also take into consideration that there are a limited number of allweather tires on the market currently. Really, it’s only a handful of options, available at only a handful of retailers. And in all honesty, a couple of those all-weathers do cost a fair bit more than conventional winter tires. With many more choices of winter tires available, the likelihood of finding a more cost-effective winter tire option is far greater than that of an all-weather. And finally, we get to the performance benefit. To me, an all-weather tire can be called a “jack of all trades, but a master of none.” Now by that I mean that I’m sure it performs in many aspects pretty well, but probably doesn’t do any one specific thing really great. Basically, an all-weather tire is designed to be good in all situations. But a winter tire is designed specifically to excel in only winter conditions. And vice versa, a summer tire is designed specifically to excel in summer conditions. Naturally, a tire (or anything for that matter) that is designed for a specific purpose would be superior at that specific purpose than a tire that was designed for multiple purposes. Now ask yourself, would you rather have the jack? Or the master? Also, just think about it this way. Running separate winter and summer tires allows you to customize each one to perform the best for you and your vehicle and the conditions you’ll be driving in. You can pick and choose your combination. Whereas with an all-weather, you’re pretty much stuck with whatever is available and you aren’t able to optimize the tire’s performance in any specific area. You just get the one tire that “does everything.”

It’s like 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner. Yeah, that’s all I’ve got. I still think winter tires are the way to go. Sure, maybe it’s not the most convenient thing to have two sets of tires which you’d have to swap over [mic drop] Featured: Winter Slalom KSi

Spread out over a total of 150,000 square-feet through six floors and two buildings, the facility was constructed as part of the company’s 50th anniversary projects. Although Toyota is in the name, any type of vehicle that holds some kind of industry significance from the late 1800s to the new millennium make up the 150 or so models on display. Back to Basics The 2016 Subaru BRZ Story and photos by Gerry Frechette

A

utomotive performance comes in many forms these days. It has always meant different things to different people, but there is one immutable fact in automotive performance of any kind – less weight is always better. It is all about the driving experience, and while most cars these days add enjoyment through lots of technology, there are still a few that take the minimalist approach. Cars like the Subaru BRZ.

The power continues on through a Torsen limited-slip differential. Unlike all other Subarus, no power goes to the front wheels. While all of the major mechanicals mentioned above play a big role in the sporting nature of the BRZ, it is the combination of the all the other components on the car that rewards an enthusiastic driver. The steering is incisive and direct, a revelation considering it is electric. The brakes have a lot of bite in normal use, but perhaps aren’t so big that you could spend a day on a track with them. The suspension is sport-tuned, and with 50/50 weight distribution and a very low centre of gravity, the BRZ is about as neutral handling as it is possible to be. The alcantara-and-leather sport seat in our Sport-tech tester is very well-bolstered and located, considering it is minimally adjustable. And, the aluminum pedals are perfectly spaced to whip off heel-and-toe downshifts. All of this is exactly what an enthusiast driver wants.

If you want some comfort and convenience with your enthusiasm, there The BRZ was developed by Subaru and Toyota (which sells it as the Scion is the usual air conditioning, power windows and audio system with all the FR-S), and in its few years of existence, the formula hasn’t been tinkered expected connectivity features, the latter newly controlled by an updated with – yet. This is a sports coupe for the purist. It has a naturally-aspirated Subaru Starlink system with better navigation, but still a smallish screen. There is not much of a trip computer beyond fuel consumption readouts, and very little interior storage. So, when reality sets in, and you want the BRZ to be a regular every-day car, it is less successful than, say, the Impreza WRX. Getting in and out of it is not so easy, it being so low. There is very little room inside for anything but the driver and passenger; the rear seats are more useful with the seatbacks folded down for some additional luggage space, as the shallow trunk will hold but a few soft bags. The ride is what you might call “feel every pebble on the road.” The insulation of various sounds produced by engine and tires is minimal. But then, the BRZ is a back-to-basics-style sports coupe, and it makes no 2.0-litre engine driving through a six-speed manual to the rear wheels only. apologies. Sportaging it to Long Beach, WA. Story and photos by LJ Koch

T

he first thing you notice when you see the Kia lineup is the styling. Some may not be Kia aficionados, but most will say they do know a Kia when they see it. Originally launched in 1993 and now in its third generation, the current version of the Sportage was introduced in 2010 and refreshed in 2014. We took it on a road trip to Long Beach, Washington to see if it backs up the style with substance. My life, like many of yours, involves kids. Even for those that don’t, space is always a requirement. My kids’ weekend was ending and our two-day getaway was beginning. First test for the Sportage was being able to carry my kids’ luggage along with ours and whatever we needed for the dog. Many have commented that the Sportage doesn’t offer enough space. With four passengers and a dog we didn’t have the option of using the full 1,547 litres of space with 60:40 split rear seats folded down. My only option was to fit everything into the 740-litre rear cargo area, and I did with no problem. Certainly not as roomy as others in the category, but I found the space it has worked for us. Once we got the girls dropped off, we officially began our trip down to Long Beach. Sometimes I am in such a rush and just like to do things as they come. Luckily this trip was all planned for me. My only responsibility was to drive. A six-hour drive that ended up being ten with a detour and some serious Seattle traffic. A perfect test for this compact SUV. Lots of time to fiddle with features and test the comfort. The Sportage SX is equipped with the UVO Infotainment System. The screen is a little small, but after a short bit of use I got more than comfortable with it. The back-up camera helped me in strange tight quarters on more than a few occasions. Not big, but functional. The seven-inch screen and navigation is available as a standard feature on the SX Luxury model. Standard on all models is the Kia hands-free, extremely easy to use, and I never had to repeat a command. Much better than most offered by other manufacturers. Only complaint is that the phone control buttons are located on the bottom spoke of the steering wheel. Having to look down to find them seems to defeat the purpose.

Perhaps signalling that the 101 Coastal Highway was close and for us to be wary of the many twists and turns ahead, all models come with standard sport dampers, and I found the handling to be a nice surprise. The 18-inch alloys and 235/55R18 Hankook tires added to both the styling and handling. A trade-off for the handling is definitely the road noise. The I-5 offers a variety of road surfaces and on the rougher ones, it was loud. With stop-and-go traffic, the engine power seemed very capable. The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine produces 260 horsepower, 269 lb-ft of torque and 2,000 pounds of towing capacity. When traffic is moving, this SUV delivers some surprising pep. The EX and LX models come with the 2.4 litre and 182 hp/177 lb-ft of torque. Arriving at the Adrift Hotel & Spa, we were pleasantly surprised by the kitschy style. Clearly an older beachside hotel, but upgraded with a modern look. Lots of raw wood and stainless steel. A great value; we loved the atmosphere and especially the live music, unique drink menu and delicious appetizers at their roof-top restaurant, The Pickled Fish. Wonderful to be in such a great place that loves our four-legged friend. With free extras like beach chairs, cruiser bikes and dog treats, it was easy to enjoy our time at the beach, reward our dog and explore the town of Long Beach. In the morning, we took our free chairs to the beach, watching the kites fly in formation high above us as the waves crashed and roared. Long Beach is famous for its kite festival, and I can only imagine what the beach would be like full of kites in the sky. Wonderful, especially since they allow dogs. In the afternoon, hopping on the free cruiser bikes, we ventured into the town, exploring the countless shops and finding a place to have a local beer and a snack. Plenty to do in Long Beach whether you love to eat or shop. If you enjoy the outdoors and some history, Cape Disappointment State Park is a short drive away, offering eight miles of trails, two lighthouses and the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. A great place for a getaway!

More and more people are choosing to purchase a compact SUV/ Crossover, wanting to balance budget and still get something that is functional and enjoyable to drive every day. After spending a few days and some long hours driving, the Kia Sportage definitely offers great value when compared to the Honda CRV, Ford EsWe had a late start, and with all of the fires burning in Eastern Washing- cape, Mazda CX-5, Toyota RAV4, Jeep Cherokee and Hyundai Tucson. ton, the sky was smokey. Graduates of the GT Academy have gone on to compete at the highest levels, including the Blancpain Endurance Series, GP3, and at the Le Mans 24 Hours. All these athletes are trained and managed in house by GTA Global, and are available to Nissan to work as brand ambassadors for the company in their home markets, as well as on a world stage. GT Academy is integrated into the game and is included as part of the annual online update. By downloading this update, a game player can choose to compete for a place in the academy by competing against thousands of other gamers from their region, as well as others from around the world. There are currently three regions – International, Asia and Europe – which are further divided into countries. Competitors can play online or at organized “live” events which are held at malls and sporting centres in less technologically developed nations.

Nissan uses innovative marketing strategy to discover new talent and sell cars

Story by Russell Purcell, photos by Russell Purcell and Nissan Canada ew brands have as long a motorsport history as Nissan, and the FrancoF Japanese auto giant has come up with a clever marketing strategy that is going to ensure that they continue to compete on the world stage for many years to come.

Darren Cox, who is the head honcho at NISMO, Nissan’s potent motorsport division, came up with the idea of Nissan’s GT Academy along with Laurence

The first stage consists of online qualifications organized within Gran Turismo. The top qualifiers will then be invited to participate in National Final events held within each eligible country. The winners of the National Finals for each of the regions will then participate in a Race Camp held at track locations for the final selection process for their region. The final winner of each region will then undergo an intensive Driver Development Program designed by Nissan and will be given an opportunity to participate in the prestigious and gruelling Dubai 24 Hours race. The old adage “Race on Sunday—Sell on Monday” is alive and well, as Nissan Canada has established a clever spec race series that uses its popular Micra sub-compact as its foundation. The 12-race series takes place over six weekends at some of the most challenging tracks in Quebec. Make no mistake, the specially-prepared cars running in the Micra Cup are real racing machines, and the level of competition displayed on the track has proven that the diminutive commuter car is both nimble and quick. So quick, in fact, that Nissan has entered two of its GT Academy national winners seats in the series for the inaugural season, and these two gamers-cum-racing drivers are proving that the concept of the academy is solid and legitimate. 2014 GT Academy India winner Abhinay Bikkani is a mechanical engineer who hails from Bangalore, India. His 18-year old teammate - Thanaroj “Mr. T.” Thanasitnitikate - comes from balmy Bangkok, and was the 2013 winner of GT Academy Thailand. Thanaroj is attending university with a focus on theatre, with hopes of becoming an actor.

Both of these men entered the GT Academy with the hopes of becoming Wiltshire of GTA Global, a marketing and driver management agency based professional race car drivers for Nissan, and judging from their results in the at the famed Silverstone race circuit in England. This guy would probably disagree.

Yeah... that’s how parking works.

Humans aren’t the only ones to experience road rage.

What were they doing on that side of those poles anyway?
