The three finalists for the North American Truck of the Year were announced recently at Automobility L.A. which is a conference that precedes the Los Angeles Auto Show. The award is chosen by a committee of 60 professional automotive journalists from both Canada and the United States and is the longest-running award that is not associated with a specific publication. The entrants are judged on innovation, design, safety, performance, technology, driver satisfaction and value. The first finalist is the Nissan Titan half-ton model which comes only a year after the Nissan Titan XD was also named a finalist for the award. The new Titan is powered by a new 5.6L Endurance engine that pushes out 390 horsepower and has received a complete makeover in terms of appearance both inside and out and now features a more aggressive yet modern look. The second finalist is the 2017 Ford F-Series Super Duty that received its first ever major redesign for 2017 and features an all-new aluminum –alloy body that cuts nearly 350 lbs. of weight from its predecessor while increasing the overall strength, and is powered by an all new powertrain that produces 925 lb-ft of from its 6.7L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel engine. Lastly, the third finalist for this year’s award is the new Honda Ridgeline which also received a much needed overhaul for 2017 and now has a rigid unibody design, a more powerful V6 engine, and boasts the world’s first available Truck Bed Audio system. The winner of the award will be crowned January 9th at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Mercedes-Benz recently announced that the X-Class pickup truck will go into production sometime in 2017 but will only be available for Europe, South America and South Africa. It is based on the Nissan NP300 Navara which is another pickup offering offered only outside our continent. It will be powered by a diesel engine and Mercedes says it will fill in one of the last gaps in their product portfolio. Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars stated “The X-Class will set new standards in a growing segment.” The truck will feature specially-constructed suspension with wide axles, a five-link rear axle with coil springs and a precisely calibrated spring/damper set-up that will provide excellent ride comfort when both on- and off-road. The interior will feature typical upscale Mercedes high-quality materials and infotainment system and the company hopes it will define a new level of comfort and value appeal in the mid-size pickup segment. As previously mentioned, unless Mercedes suddenly has a change of heart, there is little chance we will be seeing the X-Class grace our shores, as they will probably go the way many auto manufacturers have over the world and continue to deprive us of most mid-size pickup offerings.
New Duramax Diesel Engine Will Be Introduced on 2017 Sierra HD GMC has recently announced that the completely redesigned Duramax 6.6L V8 turbodiesel engine will be offered on the 2017 GMC Sierra HD. The next-gen motor offers more horsepower and torque than it ever has, which will allow users to tow and haul with even more confidence. Horsepower will be rated at 445 while torque comes in at an astounding 910 lb-ft. The new Duramax shares only the bore and stroke dimensions of its predecessor and will incorporate a new GM-developed control system. The signature low-rpm torque production hasn’t changed as it still offers 90 percent of peak torque at a low 1,550 rpm, and maintains it through 2,850 rpm. New features on the redesigned engine include, but are not limited to, stronger cylinder block and cylinder heads, new EGR system with single cooler and integrated bypass, advanced solenoid fuel system and B20 bio-diesel compatibility. A new air intake system, which is marked by a bold hood scoop on the Sierra HD, will force cool, dry air into the engine for sustained performance and cooler engine temperatures. Additionally, the new Duramax features three firsts for the heavy-duty diesel pickup segment - re-melt piston bowl rim, Venturi Jet Drain Oil Separator, and closed loop glow plug temperature control.
2017 Cana Truck King Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
I
f you stick with something long enough, you are bound to get lucky - or so it seems. I’m referring to rain and the Canadian Truck King Challenge. Each fall for the past nine years we did on-road testing in the Kawarthas, in central Ontario, and each year we were rained on. It became known as the “Truck King curse.” Now, it’s year ten and the odds finally worked in our favour – sunshine and warm temperatures were a welcome change to the norm for the homegrown truck test that has now put its first decade behind it.
adian g Challenge
Assembled at the IronWood test site this year were 11 pickup trucks, falling into four classes. Midsize, Fullsize ½-ton and Fullsize ¾-ton. The Fullsize 1-ton trucks were tested in London, ON a few days later. In the Midsize, we had the all-new Honda Ridgeline and the Chevy Colorado diesel. Toyota opted not to give us a Tacoma (which we did test last year) and the Nissan Frontier was also not offered, no doubt because it’s in the last year of its current cycle before a major upgrade.
are typically every seven years, while lesser changes do come along in-between. These facts leave us with a problem when it comes to testing. How do we field a full spread of pickups where perhaps only one is really “new”? This year, we came up with an idea that should appeal to Canadian buyers.
Between the two Midsize trucks, the Honda impressed the judges. As with anything new, it had an edge; the Colorado diesel made a big splash last year. However, it wasn’t just the new factor that pushed its score past that of the Colorado. The prior generation of Ridgeline was a niche, quirky truck that appealed to a select buyer; this time, Ridgeline has moved closer to the mainstream while retaining some of its unique characteristics. It did most everything (payload, towing, even off-road) well and still offered the most “car-like” ride. The judges rewarded Honda for a significant generational update. Mid-Size Pickup Truck Honda Ridgeline – final score of 75.5% Chevy Colorado - final score of 72.2%
We asked each of the manufacturers to give us one half-ton – the one that was their best seller, as in bodystyle, cab and powertrain combination. This way, we’d test the trucks that Canadians buy most often. We had a Ram 1500 Crew Cab with the 5.7L Hemi V8; the Chevy Silverado Crew Cab with the 5.3L V8; the new Nissan Titan Crew Cab with the 5.6L V8, and the Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Crew Cab with the 5.7L V8. For Toyota, the TRD Pro (or off-road version) of the Tundra was the newest truck they had, and not really the most often purchased. But that was their choice to enter it. The others were exactly what we asked for. Of course, I have to mention what is missing from the list. Ford. The leader in half-ton Canadian truck sales chose not to compete. Despite having entered trucks in every other Truck King competition since 2006, this year they declined. No specific reason was given, and while I certainly have my own theories as to why, I won’t speculate. They were invited, they said no, and we continued on without them.
The Full-size ½-ton category is the meat of the market. In Canada, it makes up just under 80 percent of total pickup sales. As such it is one of the most competitively fought over among the builders, and for us at the Challenge it’s a segment that we annually consider carefully – as in, what to test and how.
As always, all pickups are tested in the same way, by six automotive journalist judges who drive them back-to-back in each condition. The test loop we use is 17 kilometres long and combines, gravel, class-B pavement and highway. There are twists, turns and elevation changes. An off-road course on the IronWood site is saved for the last afternoon of testing. The trucks are always driven empty first. Then we add payload and do the loops again. Finally with tow loaded trailers and do the loops again. Yes, it gets repetitious, but this is the best way to feel the differences between the trucks.
Despite the competition, as I mentioned, there are rarely more than two “new” half-tons in a given year. Generational upgrades
This year, the Midsize trucks carried a payload of 500 lb and towed a total of 4,000 lb. The Fullsize half-tons used payload of 1,000 lb
12 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016
and towed 6,000 lb, while the ¾-tons towed 10,000 lbs and also used 1,000 lb for payload. These figures take into consideration the lowest manufacturer-set limits among the entries. The weights we use never exceed any of those limits. Amongst the ½-tons, the judges awarded the following totals. Full-Size Half-Ton Pickup Truck Ram 1500 5.7L V8 – final score of 79.4% Chevy Silverado 1500 5.3L V8 – final score of 76.7% Nisan Titan 5.6L V8 – final score of 74.3% Toyota Tundra TRD Pro 5.7L V8 – final score of 73.7% In the ¾-ton category, note that each of the trucks was diesel-powered. As these are the most common big haulers being bought by Canadians, we stressed them with 10,000 lb of concrete and the judges made a point of saying that under load was when they really felt how well they behaved. The scoring here was close, as each truck did well. However, the Ram 2500 with the Cummins 6.7L diesel did come out slightly ahead. What was more interesting was the Nissan HD tied with the Silverado HD. The first uses the all-new 5.0L Cummins diesel V8 – new this year – while the Chevy had the veteran 6.6L Duramax diesel under the hood.
Full-Size 3/4-ton Pickup Truck Ram 2500 6.7L Cummins I6 – final score 77.0% Nissan Titan XD 5.0L Cummins V8 – final score 74.9% Chevy Silverado 2500 6.6L Duramax V8 – final score 74.9% For the one-ton trucks, we had a field of two – again we missed Ford, particularly because its 2017 Super Duty trucks are all new. However, we still performed a full field of tests on the Ram 3500 and Silverado 3500 in and around London, ON. With the help of Patene building supply and IKO, we did payload testing using 4,000 lbs of shingles. Then, with the assistance of CanAm RV centre, we towed 15,000-lb fifth wheel travel trailers. After a full day of driving both trucks back-to-back, the judges awarded the win to the Chevy Silverado 3500. Full-Size 1-Ton Pickup Truck Chevy Silverado 3500 6.6L Duramax V8 – final score 75.1% Ram 3500 6.7L Cummins I6 – final score 71.8% It’s worth noting that all the trucks performed well, and as a group you’ll note how close all the scores are. If anything, this makes it tough for the judges to crown a winner because none of these trucks is “bad.” That is thanks to the fierce competition among the manufacturers. Nevertheless, this group of judges worked through the field of trucks creating a mass of data in 20 key categories. Each of these judges hails from different parts of the country and is a member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada, and collectively, they bring over 200 years of trucking experience to this intensive testing. Over three long days, they drove almost 4,000 km while evaluating these trucks The overall winner of the 10th annual Canadian Truck King Challenge with the highest collective score of 79.4% is the 2017 Hemi-powered Ram 1500. FIRST LOOK: CHEVROLET COLORADO ZR2
Attention to Detail Story and photos by Jordan Allan
W
henever the topic of off-road-oriented pickups is brought up, the Ford F-150 Raptor is usually the first example that is mentioned, as it has been one of the only and premier examples on the market. Some would argue, though, that just given the sheer size of the Raptor, it isn’t meant for everyday off-roading through tight trails, and is better suited for, say, an open desert environment. Realizing this, Chevrolet recently unveiled an off-road model of its midsize Colorado pickup called the ZR2 at a media event preceding the first press days at the L.A. Auto Show in Los Angeles. The hope here is that given the much more scaled-down size of the Colorado, it will be better suited to go into tight trails and off-road environments that are usually deemed too small for pickups, but without sacrificing any desert capability of its own or its daily driving prowess.
standard on all ZR2’s, which will help protect the side of the body should users come across any rough or harsh terrain. A great looking set of 17x8 aluminum wheels are used and are wrapped in ultra-capable 31-inch Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires. The front and rear track of the ZR2 have been widened by 3.5-inches, and the suspension has new cast-iron control arms which allows for more wheel travel and stability. The tapered ends of the front bumper increases tire clearance in the front, while it also utilizes a thick aluminum skid plate to protect the radiator and oil pan. The rear bumpers have also been modified to provide a better look and more clearance, and an available bed-mounted spare tire carrier adds another rugged look to the already aggressive pickup.
Chevrolet has clearly taken its time in designing this truck, all in the name of making it truly capable both on- and off-road in even the most challenging of situations. First and foremost, in order to achieve this balance, Chevy turned to a surprising new partner to help create the ZR2 dampers which truly are the heart of an off-road vehicle. Multimatic Inc. out of Markham, Ontario are a renowned maker of high performance Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) dampers that are used in a number of vehicles including Formula One winners, and helped craft the ones that will be used on the ZR2. First offered in the 2014 Camaro Z/28, these DSSV dampers use spool valves that increase precision and will increase ride and handling performance both on and off-road. On the outside, the ZR2 very closely resembles the concept that was shown back in 2014 at the L.A. Auto Show, and features a much more aggressive profile with a two-inch suspension lift for more ground clearance. The rocker protectors will come DEC/JAN 2016 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 25
model will be the 2.8L I-4 Duramax diesel engine. In terms of towing, the ZR2 still is plenty capable, as it is able to pull up to 5,000 lbs or carry 1,100 lbs of payload. Despite the obvious buzz that off-road mid-size pickups create in the industry, the ZR2 finds its only real competition in the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro which has proven to be a viable option over the years, and was definitely on the minds of Chevrolet when designing this new model. Although it was a small sample size and it came without any personal seat time behind the wheel, it was clear that the ZR2 was built right with attention to detail put in at all the right places. It should have no problem attracting customers with its combination of everyday drivability and off-road capability when it hits Canadian showrooms in the first half of 2017. The ZR2 also features electronic locking front and rear differentials and Chevrolet’s AutoTrac transfer case to further enhance off-road capability, which was demonstrated to us during the media event, where a course was set up to show-off the ZR2’s true capability. This included a steep hill climb that saw traction being lost to 3 of the 4 wheels which, once the locking differentials were engaged, proved to be handled with ease by the ZR2. In addition, Chevrolet took it upon themselves to properly integrate the electronic lockers and allow them to work seamlessly with other features such as traction control, stability control and hill descent control. An Off-Road Mode button is also featured, which alters the throttle progression among other things to give better control and responsiveness. The ZR2 will offer the same engine options as the rest of the Colorado lineup, including the all-new 3.6L V6 engine paired to a Hydra-Matic 8L45 8-speed automatic transmission that pushes out an impressive 308 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. FEATURE: TOYOTA TRD EVENT
Off-Road Prowess Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde
I
n recent years we have come to relate the Toyota TRD program to trucks and 4x4s on the dealer lot, but TRD stands for Toyota Racing and Development, a branding that grew out of the TOSCO program started in the ‘50s. It changed names in 1979, and covers everything that goes fast with special performance programs from Toyota. Backed by Ivan Stewart in the early ‘90s, Toyota was a force to be reckoned with in Baja racing, taking
42 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016
many Baja 1000, Baja 500 and Nevada 400 wins along with Pikes Peak and (CORR) Championship off road racing titles, and that continues with many racing programs today including paved tracks, rally racing and short course off-road racing. In 1997, the TRD branding came to the pick-up truck line with a TRD off-road package, which continues to today with the all-new TRD Pro packages we had the chance to test in the Tacoma, Tundra and soon to be released in the 4Runner (there was one for unveiling but we were not allowed to drive it). What is really in the new packages besides cool stickers on your ride? Toyota teamed up with Bilstein shocks for the Tundra and Fox for the Tacoma, for true off-road performance in the suspension. Adding an inch of lift with TRD tuned coils up front and progressive leafs in the rear, makes room for larger P265/70R16 Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Kevlar-reinforced tires, which still had good road manners (not as aggressive as the BFG All-Terrain tire package that came on the late FJ Cruiser). The TRD package also comes with heavy-duty skid plates to protect the vitals when hitting your favourite off-road trail, and TRD-tuned stainless steel exhaust. Interior style cues include TRD-specific seats and trim to let everyone know what you’re driving.
The Tacoma comes equipped with Fox triple bypass shocks on all four corners a la Ford Raptor, while the Tundra comes equipped with Bilstein remote reservoir shocks. In the case of the Tacoma, you also get the “Crawl Control” function (not available on the Tundra and neither is the optional rear selectable locker). This was on display over several steep sand hills. The Crawl Control has four pre-set speeds, and whether it’s a steep descent or a steep climb, the throttle control and braking are handled by the computer with no driver input. As a hardcore 4x4 guy, it was pretty tough to let the Toyota make the descent down a drop over 45 degrees without my working the brakes and gas, but it did it with flying colours through the
44 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016
quick release and grabbing of the brakes from the anti slip system, which sure makes a lot of noise when active. Personally… I’d rather have my feet on the pedals. The off-road course set up also had a speed section with some nice big bumps that got the truck light on its tires, and a rally course section with lots of elevation change and slick rain-soaked fields that had the traction control and anti skid system in fits if not fully turned off (and all the trucks very sideways if you liked that kinda thing – and I did, and so did many others with hoots and smiles from all). This put the special off-road shocks in full view, and the handling was excellent from both trucks. I found out in the Tundra that it takes two steps to get the traction control to turn off and stay off and not interrupt your fun by coming fully back on and grinding you to a slippery hill-sliding stop. Strange that despite the 381-hp 5.7L V8 in the Tundra, I was able to make it around the track faster in the 278-hp 3.5L Tacoma – I’d say weight and agility are in the Tacoma’s favour here, as are those triple bypass Fox shocks. Despite all this off-road prowess in these new models, they were still very pleasant to drive on pavement and the country roads that took us winding through the Blue Mountains of Southern Ontario to the private lot where we had our off road fun. The TRD Pro package is not something to avoid if you plan to use your truck or SUV for mostly going back and forth to work, like we all have to do to pay for our toys. The TRD Pro is just as happy hauling you back and forth Monday to Friday, so you can take that time on the weekends and have some fun as well! Take a minute and check one out yourself – I think you will find these trucks a lot of fun!

FIRST DRIVE: 2017 CHEVROLET SILVERADO HD
Confidence and Capability Story by LJ Koch, photos courtesy of Chevrolet
T
he heavy-duty truck market has become an ultra-competitive race between the Big Three to see who can out-do the others. One in five trucks sold in the United States is sold in Texas, and with that stat resonating, Chevrolet chose Dallas, TX for their new HD preview. Chevy is launching the 2017 HD pickup by inviting customers and media to Texas Motor Speedway to experience it in a non-traditional truck setting. Arriving at TMS and The Speedway Club is an experience. The Speed-
way Club is a nine-story glass tower that, as the name implies, overlooks the Speedway. Of course, the club itself is on the 9th floor, and this is where Chevrolet has lunch for the Media and 24 Chevy truck owners. Chevy is about building trucks for their owners. With that guiding philosophy, they have invited Chevy owners from the local area to test the new 2017 Silverado HD and drive their trucks on the Speedway as part of setting a Guinness World RecordsTM Title. The record was for the World’s Largest Flag Pulled by a Moving Vehicle, a 40x80-foot United States flag flown around the track with a 2017 Silverado 2500HD. The guests were able to play a role in the event, driving their trucks in a victory lap. During lunch with the customers, I got to speak to a few. The owners were thrilled with their experience in the new HD, and a few placed orders right there on the spot. Their only complaint was that the Speedway had restricted the trucks to the lower portion of the oval. Nobody was allowed to ride up above the apron on the banking. The crazy thing about this new Chevy HD is that it probably could have, with the all new 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel. The first thing that stands out when viewing the redesigned Silverado HD is the big hood scoop. It is actually functional! It drives cool, dry air into the engine to improve performance and keep the engine running at cooler temperatures when trailering loads in steep grade or extreme conditions. Cooler air from the hood scoop keeps the transmission and engine running better under load. The new Duramax is replacing an engine that has made a name for itself with almost two million being produced over the last fifteen years. The new Duramax turbo-diesel produces an SAE-certified 445 horsepower (332 kW) and 910 lb-ft (1,234 Nm) of torque, which is 12 percent more hp and a 19 percent increase in torque. Chevy has managed to improve the performance, but decrease the engine noise by 38 percent. More power in a quieter and smoother engine! Chevy only changed what needs to be changed, keeping the proven foundation and the things that they feel don’t need to be changed. They

To demonstrate the new HD and engine technology, Chevy let us loose on the track. Our first test was driving the new HD3500 Crew Cab Dualie while towing a trailer loaded with 10,000 lbs of concrete on the apron of the oval. We were instructed to stand on the accelerator pedal as hard as we could. Even with the full load, the truck spun all four tires. This test demonstrated the towing acceleration, high-speed handling and braking capability of the new truck while under load. The biggest impression was the confidence behind the wheel that the high speed stability and exhaust braking provided. Accelerating to 70 mph, I then let off the throttle and used only the exhaust braking to slow the truck and trailer for the oval corner. There was little need for braking. Very impressive. Chevy’s goal is to make towing safer and this is definitely a step in that direction. Our second test was in the Duramax-equipped Silverado HD2500 Z71 around the traffic cone road course setup inside the oval. The truck is quick, accelerating 0-to-60 mph in 7.1 seconds with the stability control system providing better-than-expected handling. have kept the 90-degree V8 block, bore & stroke of 103x99 mm, valvetrain architecture and valve train drive gear. The new Duramax also retains the low-rpm torque, offering 90 percent of peak torque between 1,550 and 2,850 rpm. Additional highlights include: • New, stronger cylinder block and cylinder heads • New, stronger rotating and reciprocating assembly • Increased oil- and coolant-flow capacity • New EGR system with single cooler and integrated bypass • New electrically actuated/electronically controlled turbocharging system • All-new advanced solenoid fuel system • All-new electronic controls • New full-length damped steel oil pan that contributes to quietness • New rocker cover/fuel system acoustical treatments • B20 bio-diesel compatibility • SAE-certified 445 net horsepower (332 kW) at 2,800 rpm • SAE-certified 910 net lb-ft of torque (1,234 Nm) at 1,600 rpm

Along with improved power and reduced noise of the new Duramax, Chevy also introduced their new Chevy Truck Legends Program. Free to join and initially open to all Texas residents, it will soon be available to all Chevy truck owners. Owners who have more than 100,000 miles on the odometer of their Chevy truck, or have purchased or leased more than one new Chevy truck in their lifetime, are eligible. The program rolls out in 2017. All Chevy Truck Legends members will receive exclusive branded memorabilia, including Truck Legends hats, Truck Legends decals and, if applicable, decals celebrating mileage milestones ranging from 100,000 to 1 million miles. Stay tuned to see if this is coming to Canada. When the day was complete, it was easy to understand why they chose the Texas Motor Speedway for the launch of the all new Duramax engine and 2017 Chevy HD pickup. Everything’s bigger in Texas and this includes truck sales. Chevy builds trucks for their customers, and they know that their customers want towing confidence along with capability. The new Chevy Duramax turbo-diesel and HD truck provide that and more in a very competitive category.

RV-ING: PRIMETIME AVENGER28 RKS
Bang for Your Buck
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
P
rime Time Manufacturing is an RV company that was formed in 2009, yet its history goes back so much longer. How is that possible? Each of the principals entered into this new company with decades of RV building experience behind them. This was a common theme among the founders. Another was to take their combined knowledge of what makes a good RV and apply it to a series of new products that would stress value in the marketplace. This strategy appears to have worked if you consider that they attracted enough attention to be bought by RV giant Forest River, which in turn was purchased by investment behemoth Berkshire Hathaway. A builder of travel trailers and fifth wheels, they have expanded into toy haulers as well. But for my purposes, I was interested in the meat
of the market. I wanted a trailer that served up family-size with sharp family values. This, frankly, is a tricky segment. As any younger family knows, money is always spread thin, yet with growing kids, there are so many potential RV adventures that to put off a trailer purchase means missing out on some of the really fun years. This is a balance that so many parents have to master. You want everything for your kids now – but there is just so much cash. Travel trailers, in general, offer the most space and amenities for each RV dollar. So, starting there, I picked a 34-foot unit that, at 6,789 lb (dry), is easily half-ton towable by a wide variety of pickups. The trailer is called the Avenger, and this single-slide model features a full-width rear kitchen, large mid-ships bathroom and enough sleeping space for six. The rear kitchen is what will catch your attention right off in this unit (Avenger is built in 26 floorplans). The L-shaped counter top offers more counter space than most designs and it creates a natural partition between eating and salon area. The one large driver’s side slideout holds the U-shaped dinette and the fold-out couch. Now, in my test unit, I had a nice hardwood freestanding table and chairs. This is an option – and that’s why I talk about the standard dinette, which, with my kid-friendly focus, is more practical. Still, it’s nice to have choices. I see this dinette, across from the sink, as what makes this a large, busy, functional kitchen. With the sink at the heart of the counter, the prep area is to the left, the three-burner range with oven is to the right with the microwave above it, while one step away on the rear wall is the large built-in refrigerator/freezer. around and the large table is a step away for serving. However, what you’ll also notice is the number of cupboards, above, beside and below all the appliances – more than in most trailers, I’d say. The focal point of the salon is a floor-to-ceiling built-in cabinet that houses the flat-screen TV, stereo and (again) decent amounts of hard-door storage. The TV is high, next to the ceiling, so has clear sight lines to the couch, twin recliner rockers or even the eating area. This cabinet wall is also the dividing wall for the bathroom. Again, thinking of kids, the kitchen is important – check. So is the TV – check, and a bathroom big enough to wash off the great outdoors. The bathroom space has two doors; a sliding hard door for night-time master bedroom access, and a hallway door for everyone else. Even with these doors closed, it’s a large space due to the placement of the corner shower with the toilet in the opposite corner. The trade-off here is a smaller sink with very little counter space. However, the cabinet above and the cupboard below will hold all the stuff you won’t be able to leave out. Also, a large floor-to-ceiling four-door clothes closet is a very practical feature in this space. A skylight in the shower also makes this a light space, as does the second vented skylight in the centre of the room. This is a bathroom and a dressing room. So, while I have been stressing kid-friendly spaces in this trailer, the front bedroom does offer enough space and privacy to offer refuge for frazzled parents. Hard doors seal off this space and the double bed does have reasonable space around one side and along the foot of the bed. But whoever is on the right is going to be climbing in, as this side of the mattress is butt up against the wall. I mentioned value pricing at the outset, and it’s probably important to look at how and where Prime Time saves money on its construction. Firstly this is a three-season trailer; the windows are fine, but not for winter. Walls use wood studs and skin is aluminum. Insulation is only R7. However the important items such as the HVAC systems, water heater, safety devices, one-piece TPO roof membrane, stabilizer jacks, outdoor shower, and diamond rock guard are included. I point these few items out simply to remind buyers that you do get what you pay for. But, having said that, a builder like Prime Time does have massive buying power advantages and a method of passing some of that advantage on to buyers is to bundle together a series of features – most often the ones that will add enjoyment for the whole family. In the Avenger I noted some of these to be: 87-inch U-shaped dinette, deep overhead cabinets, pleated shades in salon and dining area; solid wood-core cabinets; double
54 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2016
cooling and an integrated trailer brake controller to optimize capability and comfort when trailering. A point of interest here is the advance in trailer sway control that is now possible because of the integration of braking in the truck and trailer. These new controllers do more than just activate the trailer brakes. Systems such as StabiliTrak also include the trailer; so in effect the truck’s computer is also keeping an eye on what’s happening with your trailer. Another system that I appreciate is an available automatic locking rear differential that is fully automatic and reacts in milliseconds in low-traction situations. Great for getting a trailer moving on wet grass.
sink; high-rise kitchen faucet; pot and pan drawer; spice rack; a residential-style HAB sofa; residential-grade carpet, and an overall 82-inch interior height. The trailer runs on 30 amps-worth of shore power, making it pretty much pluggable anywhere. I towed the Avenger with a new 2016 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab1500. I didn’t use an equalizing hitch and still found that truck and trailer maintained a nice level attitude. One reason for that is that the E-Z Lube axles on the trailer are set almost exactly at the centre of the frame, so this makes for a flat, confident pull. However, it also gives the Avenger a healthy tail swing. That’s not an issue, just a fact that owners should be aware of, particularly in tight manoeuvring situations. So, while the Z71 package on my Silverado already added extra suspension and shock capability, another towing setup is available this year. Called the NHT max trailering package, it features a 9.76-inch rear axle, heavy-duty rear springs, unique shock tuning, enhanced
My truck was equipped with the 5.3-litre V8 – probably the most popular of GM’s engines in this Silverado. It makes 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. This second number in particular pulls well up hills even with the full weight of the Avenger behind. Power is pushed through a new eight-speed automatic transmission. This helps build that low-end torque and at the high end offers decent fuel economy. Once again, the Avenger is a travel trailer that doesn’t have it all – but for most buyers it has what’s important at a price that will get you out RVing sooner.
