A new 4x4 CrewMax SX model is now available, as is the new 4x4 CrewMax TRD Off Road Premium package that provides many off-road oriented upgrades such as all-terrain tires, Bilstein shock absorbers, push-button start and fuel tank protector plates. Nissan Reportedly Axing Cummins-Powered Titan XD According to a report from The Drive Nissan has confirmed that they are doing away with their Cummins-diesel powered version of the Titan XD. Car and Driver has since confirmed this report and has been told by a Nissan spokesperson that the model will see production end in December of this year. In addition, Nissan says they will no longer be offering regular-cab models of either the Titan or Titan XD, meaning that only Crew Cab and King Cab (extended cab) will be available. Although it’s been widely reported and nearly confirmed in the by outlets in the US, nothing has been made official on either side of the border by Nissan themselves so until that becomes official this is merely a report. The Titan will apparently undergo a significant refresh for the 2020 model year and we will be sure to keep you posted on any details as they emerge.

When combined, the Power Stroke engine and all-new TorqShift 10-speed automatic transmission with the power takeoff provision provide a best-in-class stationary torque of up to 300 lb-ft of torque. The PTO provision will remain optional on the Super Duty pickup models and 7.3L V8 Chassis Cab models with output numbers being released at a later date. Ram Announces Pricing For New 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Ram has recently announced Canadian pricing for the 2020 Ram 1500 with the new 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel engine, with MSRP starting at $43,395 for the Tradesman Quad Cab 2WD. The EcoDiesel engine will be a $5,800 option over the standard 3.6L Pentastar V6 on Tradesman and Big Horn models and a $3,900 increase over the 5.7L HEMI V8 which is the standard option for the Sport, Rebel, Laramie, Longhorn and Limited models. For the first time, the EcoDiesel will be offered in all models and configurations of the Ram 1500 including the Rebel for the first time ever. The diesel engine produces 480 lb-ft. of torque and 260 horsepower which provides a towing capability of 5,697 kg (12,560 lbs.). After being introduced for the Ram 1500 lineup on the previous generation, this newest version of the Italian-made 3.0L diesel has undergone a series of changes and upgrades in order to contribute to its improved performance and fuel economy. A new-generation water-cooled turbocharger is featured as are redesigned intake ports, a new exhaust gas recirculation system, redesigned high-pressure fuel injector nozzles and a new compression ratio. Official fuel economy ratings will be announced closer to the truck’s on-sale date which is set for early on in the year’s fourth quarter.
2020 Pickup Preview Take a look at what’s happening in the pickup world for the upcoming year
T
he Canadian sportsman regularly travels into remote wilderness locations where a 4WD vehicle is a must-have. They also tow more than most – be it RVs, boats or powersports trailers. These are givens for those who enjoy hunting and angling. And, these needs certainly dictate the kind of trucks sportsmen buy. So, while there are currently many trucks and SUVs that will do these jobs, 2020 is going to grow the available field substantially.
Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturers
First, we have the arrival of the Jeep Gladiator, a pickup truck based on the current Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep’s first pickup offering in 28 years. Second, we have the return of the Ford Ranger, and this midsize truck outfitted with its FX4 package is an aggressive off-roader. These two new trucks join the already available Toyota Tacoma TRD-Pro, Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, and Nissan Frontier PRO-4x – all popular with the off-road crowd. Put them all together and these trucks now dominate the off-road capable segment. Also extensively updated for 2020 is the Heavy-Duty pickup segment; with significant improvements for the towing crowd. But first, let’s start with the new Jeep. The Gladiator is instantly recognizable as a Jeep. It’s only when you peek around the side that you see the bed. However, the 5-foot bed on this truck is not just welded onto the standard Wrangler frame. No, the Gladiator’s design offers the same four doors, but on a stretched frame 31 inches longer than the Wrangler. The wheelbase is also 19.4 inches longer and the rear axle and suspension setup borrows heavily from the Ram 1500. This design nets a payload of 1,600 lb and the tow rating is a class-leading 7,650 lb. These numbers should appeal to any recreational hauler as well as the Jeep enthusiast. Powering this truck is the Pentastar 3.6L V6. It’s matched to a sixspeed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. This V6 makes 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, and it also comes standard with an engine stop/start fuel saving feature. The new Ford Ranger (technically a 2019) has returned after an eight-year absence from Canada (even though an “international Ranger” was being sold around the world during those years). On the outside, the new Ranger evokes a muscular body with a high beltline that emphasizes strength, while a raked grille and windshield gives it an athletic appearance. This Ranger has a 126.8-inch wheelbase with an overall length of 210.8-inches (compared to the full-size F-150’s 157-inch wheelbase and length of 243 inches). The standard powertrain is a 2.3L EcoBoost engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. This new engine is designed with direct fuel injection and a twin-scroll turbocharger, and makes 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The Ranger offers towing of 7,500 lb and payload of 1,860 lb.

In addition to the FX4 package already mentioned, buyers can also order a new Ranger with an STX Appearance Package, XL Chrome Package, Technology Package or Sport Appearance Package. The rest of the mid-size segment (and most of the current crop of 1500-series trucks as well) are in a carry-over year for 2020. In the Heavy-Duty truck segment however, there is fierce competition as the 2020 models debut. New stats show that well over 20 percent of total North American truck sales are now HD pickups (and growing). Why? Manufacturers say that 90 percent of those new buyers need to tow regularly.
of torque and tow a new high of 35,100 lb. created almost an instant response from the other Detroit builders. GM and Ford announced their 2020 updates would soon follow and released many of the new numbers, making sure that Ram did not have the advantage of a quiet market as it showed the 2019 HD model. So, for 2020, GM’s Duramax 6.6L turbo-diesel is now tuned to 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque. Performance will improve thanks to in-

Ford’s all-new 7.3L V8 engine
Rivian R1T The Sierra and Silverado (new in 2019) will now be available with this new diesel engine. This means that as of 2020, each of the Big Three now offers a small diesel option in their half-tons. On the tech side, GMC is promoting its ProGrade Trailering System which includes an in-vehicle trailering app with trailer light test, trailer electrical diagnostics, trailer tire pressure and temperature monitoring. GM is also offering a new gas engine in its HD trucks. This 6.6L V8 will make 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque and is much cheaper to buy than the diesel. All 2020 options and innovations from the General apply to both the Chevrolet and GMC brands.
16 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019
Ford is also adding a gas engine to its Super Duty lineup. The standard HD gas engine will still be the 6.2L V8. However, it’s joined by a new 7.3L V8, and both are paired to a new 10-speed automatic designed specifically for HD trucks. As for the all-new world of electric pickups; we may actually see a production unit in 2020. Rivian says its R1T electric pickup truck will start rolling off the line in the new year. So, while they may be first, Tesla, Atlis, Fisker and Bollinger all have pickup designs in various stages of development. Tesla, for instance, has said they may show their prototype truck as early as this November. Meanwhile Ford and General Motors, not to be left out, announced earlier this year that they too have electrified pickups in development.

QUICK SPIN: 2020 RAM 3500 HD
New Bigness Story and photos by Dan Heyman
W
hile the popular line of Ram pickups could probably have gotten by without doing much for 2020, as they seem to be ticking all the right boxes these days, the manufacturer obviously understands this is a competitive market and in light of GM having released new versions of its Sierra and Silverado HD pickups, and with Ford about to do so right around the corner, Ram was loathe to sit idly by. So they’ve come up with what you see here: a bigger (but lighter), newly-styled and entirely more capable (and comfortable) Ram HD than we’ve ever seen before. It starts with the styling; the “new bigness” starts with that positively massive grille that manages to appear purposeful and strong without being huge and borderline offensive, as it is on the GMC Sierra, for example. There’s no question it’s a Ram, though, as shown by the huge text on that grille. The headlights are also new, appearing as though they can project their beams about five miles down the road – at high noon. In Texas. In August. These are some proper HID numbers that should lower the need for additional lighting. In general, all the styling is just big; big “3500” badges on the hood, big “Cummins” badges on the fender and big “Ram” badges on the lower doors to match the item on the grille and tailgate. 24 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019
power; that’s 1,000 – one thousand – pound-feet of torque and 400 horsepower from a 6.7L turbodiesel I6 in the truck you see here. That’s enough to tow up to 15,875 kg and haul up to 3,484 kg depending on spec. Towing, meanwhile, is made easier by a new blind-spot system that can now cover the entirety of your trailer, and different profiles can be saved for different trailer lengths. While there will always be a debate among pickup purists (or “zealots”) as to what a company claims their truck can do and what it can actually do, with even a short drive in the latest
Then you go inside, and the “bigness” continues; the vehicle I tested had the biggest infotainment screen the brand offers – a 12.3-in. number that would make Tesla blush – plus all manner of toggles and buttons sized so they can easily be operated with work gloves. Add the properly spacious Mega Cab cabin that offers 1,040 mm of front legroom, 1,038 mm of rear legroom, and 1,023 mm of rear headroom plus flat loading floor and heated seats both front and back, and you’ve got a truck that can haul your cargo and your crew in proper comfort. Of course, this is an HD pickup and even if you add as many creature comforts as you want, if it can’t function as the work truck hauler it needs to be, you may as well have not even bothered. To that end, for 2020, the 3500HD gets higher strength alloy steels in the body and frame (no aluminum here, though), upgraded transfer case, larger rear axle, larger rear brakes, larger axle shafts and upgraded driveshafts. That’s all before we discuss
26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019
3500HD as we had, much of that new capability will be felt as soon as you drop the hammer. We were towing a 32,000-lb trailer – just a few thousand below what it’s capable of – and the get up and go was honestly startling. Power from that big I-6 is transmitted through a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission, and you can tell it’s been tuned to haul as it rarely gets in the way of the powertrain as both it and the engine work in concert to ensure progress that’s smooth and free of forward progress-sapping lurches and heaves. It’s just
effortless torque all the way through the rev band with peak torque arriving at just 1,800 rpm. That’s about as instantaneous as acceleration can get when you’re putting that much load on a powertrain. Suspension duties, meanwhile, are leaf springs on the 3500HD, while the 2500 models get an option of a multi-link rear set-up or even air suspension, if a little more luxury is what you’re after. While the acceleration is deep-chested, the performance from the new brakes – and the way they interact with the stability control system to mitigate trailer sway – is confidence-inspiring. Just as
my cursory knowledge of physics suggests that accelerating while hauling this much weight shouldn’t feel as it does here, the way the brakes work with the trailer brakes to make sure everything is copacetic under braking and that the two pieces of the puzzle work together as one is a feeling to behold. All that luxury is great, but more than likely, if you’re looking at a dually-equipped 3500HD like this one here, you want to know that it can tow and haul most things you throw at it, and from the brief time I had in it, it can most definitely do that. Looks like the pickup war rages on for 2020.

nance fees. Clearly, that may vary based on a vehicle’s age, mileage, and owner driving habits. But the message is clear: Despite the upfront costs, “ultimately, servicing your vehicle at the recommended service intervals can keep money in your pocket by avoiding more unintentional wear, a catastrophic failure, or worst case—an accident,” adds Thompson. Vehicle Maintenance Checklist By no means is this a comprehensive list of vehicle maintenance, but it’s enough to get vehicle owners thinking about proper upkeep.

s Rocco gets out of the car, Clemenza famously quips, “Leave the gun—take the cannoli.” Rocco wisely opts for the dessert, as Paulie lies slumped against the steering wheel. Likely, we can agree the same sentiment applies to vehicle maintenance. “Abandon the oil change, battery inspection, and spark plug swap—swing for the high-end JW Speaker LED headlight conversion and TrailFX auxiliary lighting upgrade instead.” Seems logical, right? That is, until a truck is running well below peak performance, puttering down the road on life support. In a winter climate like Canada, a choice to “Leave the gun—take the cannoli” could put a driver in an unpleasant, unsafe situation. Coughing Up the Cash Yet, as The SHOP Magazine points out, research proves that consumers are delaying car maintenance to the tune of nearly $25 billion, according to the Auto Care Factbook 2020 and IMR Inc. The report ranks brake pads, tire changes, and oil changes at the top of the list. “We surveyed 100,000 households about how they’ve maintained their vehicles and whether they’ve knowingly delayed any maintenance on those vehicles,” says Bill Thompson, CEO, IMR, Inc. “We found that a surprising number of households are knowingly delaying vehicle maintenance and that the primary reasons are economic, convenience, and a perception that delaying the maintenance isn’t quite affecting vehicle performance,” he continues. According to Canada Drives®, experts in the field have stated that a vehicle owner whose car meets the 20,000 km/year mark can typically expect to pay approximately $1,000.00 for the cost of annual mainte28 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019
1. Regain the Spark: Spark plugs are a very important, yet undervalued, part of engine performance. Like anything else, they have a lifespan. “When a spark plug begins singing its swan song, performance, fuel economy, and throttle response will all begin to suffer. In the worst-case scenario, a misfire can develop, which can be very alarming. Fear not, though, as replacing spark plugs is something you can do in the comfort of your own driveway,” educates The Engine Block. A little spark plug 101: Copper plugs are the most affordable option and will usually require a replacement every 16,093 to 32,187 kilometers. Platinum plugs are a step up, offering a much longer lifespan of up to 100,000 miles, but are topped by high-end iridium plugs in terms of both price and lifespan, which will run for around 125,000 miles. “Yes, copper plugs have the shortest lifespan, but their tendency to burn cooler makes them the best choice for boosted and high-compression engines. This is because they are less likely to cause detonation,” says Mark Williams of The Engine Block. “Similarly, if you’re looking to save money on parts for a daily driver, don’t be so quick to buy the cheapest plug that will fit in your engine. Sure, the initial cost of a platinum or iridium plug may be more. But if the vehicle is kept up with properly, those plugs may very well be the last ones you put in your engine,” he adds. “Consult your vehicle’s service manual for the recommended spark plugs and be sure to pick the brain of the parts store employee, as they can provide more useful insight than Google.” 2. Keep Up with the Oil: As BullRing®, a manufacturer of highquality truck anchors, says, “Clean oil lubricates and protects your truck’s engine. Engine oil can easily become contaminated with dust, dirt, and debris from the engine and environment. When this happens, the engine can’t do its job properly.”

Actually, a spark plug inspection is smart to do alongside an oil change. “If you notice the plugs are fouling up or showing a lean or rich burn, chances are the engine is seeing some internal issues,” explains Williams. Those who remain on schedule with their oil changes are more likely to detect an issue. “Say you’re noticing a lack of oil draining from the engine—you are likely dealing with a leak, which you will want to address as soon as possible. However, if you notice your oil has a burnt odour and smoke is coming from the exhaust, you’re likely dealing with blowby. Admittedly, when this occurs with a beater car—it’s not the end of the world. But if it’s happening on a vehicle you care about, don’t dilly dally on addressing it,” adds Williams. One’s owner manual is the best first step for determining an oil change schedule. 3. Change Out the Filter: The fuel system, oil system, and air system all use filters. Performance can suffer when they aren’t routinely serviced. “Just as your truck needs clean oil to function at its best, it also needs clean air. Be sure to change the oil filter on a regular basis
to remove any dust and debris that would slow down the engine’s efficiency. Oil and filter changes are the most critical parts of a good truck maintenance schedule,” continues BullRing®. 4. Rotating Tires: Guilty as charged—in the past, I’ve been a regular offender of running my tires past the point of no return. They’re just such an expensive investment…all the more reason to ensure that investment is protected with routine rotation at proper intervals, something that can easily be done from the comfort of your garage. “Rotating tires is a basic procedure and can save you hundreds of dollars in the long run. It can be done right at home in the driveway and is one of many must-have skills when owning a car. If you can change a flat, you can rotate tires,” says Williams. 5. Checking/Filling Proper Lubricants, Coolants, Etc.: BullRing® reminds in addition to the engine oil, vehicle owners should routinely check the engine coolant, power steering fluid, windshield washer fluid, and brake fluid. The company website says: Engine coolant keeps engine fluids at a consistent boiling and freezing point. Keeping the engine at an optimal temperature is essential for the engine’s performance and for reducing problems associated with extreme temperatures. Likewise, the power steering fluid is considered a hydraulic fluid. This means it’s responsible for moving the various components of your truck’s steering system. Changing the power steering fluid can help prolong the life of other more expensive power-steering components, like the power-steering pump and the power-steering rack. Although it may not seem like a big deal, changing the windshield washer fluid is an important part of routine truck maintenance. Dust and smears can quickly build up on your windshield, making it difficult to see. Routinely changing the windshield washer fluid is not only a safe practice, but it protects your windshield. A clean windshield is less prone to damage. 30 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019
Like power steering fluid, your truck’s brake fluid is also a hydraulic fluid. Over time, brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air, causing it to not work properly. This is why your brake fluid should be replaced with new fluid on a regular basis. 6. Changing/Charging a Battery: Oh, that feeling when rushing to the truck, quickly jumping in, and immediately slipping in the key only for the engine to fail in turning over. “Trying to start your car only to find a dead battery is the automotive equivalent to stubbing your toe on the way to the shower,” says Williams. Being unsure how to charge or change a dead battery can become a crisis situation pretty quickly, especially in the bitter cold of a Canadian winter. “It’s literally one of the easiest items on the list and considering the battery is such an essential part of the operating system, it’s one of those general vehicle maintenance tasks that you really need to know how to do,” he reminds. The holidays are around the corner—slip a handheld Weego, Battery Tender, or CTEK in the stocking. 7. Checking Brakes: Brakes in poor condition are not a tune easily forgotten—insert nails-on-chalkboard sound byte. But how does someone know which replacement to choose? “If you do a lot of heavy-towing, race your vehicle on a regular basis, live in a colder climate, or make frequent short trips without adequate time for your brake pads to warm up, semi-metallic pads are for you,” explains Sears Auto Center. Though really, brake pad choice comes down to making compromises. “Taking cost out of the equation, you have to choose between stopping performance, pad life, and noise. An aggressive semi-metallic or carbon metallic pad will have great stopping performance and life but will be noisy. A softer organic pad will be quiet, but will wear out quickly. A ceramic pad will be quiet and have long life, but it can’t handle the heat of extreme braking the way a semi-metallic pad can. That’s why many high-end European vehicles (designed for Autobahn speeds) and larger pickups (designed for heavy towing) still come with semi-metallic pads, regardless of the cost,” says Brian Gilboy, District Manager at Federal Mogul. “In most cases, it’s best to follow the vehicle manufacturer’s choice of friction composition. Beyond pad composition, one should look at the brake pad shim configuration and hardware. Both go a long way to decreasing noise and increasing pad life and performance,” he adds. We all play the game. You know, justifying not addressing maintenance as somehow saving money. But it always comes back to bite, especially for those who experience extreme temperatures or rough terrain. A vehicle is more than a tool or a toy, it’s an investment. Ensure you have it for years to come by taking care of it.

Built to Last Longer 1960 Ford F-250 Story and photos by John Gunnell

n its 1960 advertising and promotions, Ford Motor Company touted its trucks as the best of the current crop and the best for economical use. “Ford trucks cost less to own, Less to run,” said one sales pitch. “Built to last longer, too,” said the Ford ad men. Don Schweitzer, Sr., of Clintonville, Wis., has a two-wheel-drive 1960 Ford truck that lasted a long time—59 years to be exact. “I can’t even remember how much I paid for the truck,” he says. “It has a six-cylinder engine and a four-speed manual transmission. Being a ¾-ton, it’s not very fast. It has a long box. I guess all 3/4-tonners came that way.” According to Schweitzer it’s just a Plain Jane truck with 55,000 miles showing. “I think that’s all the original miles,” says Don. “Being a feed mill truck, they never drove it very far . . . only short distances.” A grain farmer owned it before Don purchased it. The farmer lived in a small town not far from Bismarck. “I don’t know how he got it,” Schweitzer said. “I found it in a magazine. I called, the guy said he still had the truck, so we went out there to get it.” Schweitzer drove non-stop, from Clintonville to North Dakota, with a trailer. “When we got there it was 80-90 degrees,” he recalled. “It was really hot and miserable. It took us a while to load the F250 on the trailer. Then, we drove non-stop back to Clintonville.” The trip was about 18 hours and 1,100 miles round trip.
didn’t know what happened,” Schweitzer pointed out. “It ended up that the paint company gave Mark extra sealer and clear and other supplies so he could mix both paints together. The result was the colour red we have now.” Schweitzer thought he was going to have to buy new paint, but Kutchenriter suggested using the paint they had mixed together to make their own shade of red. “We had plenty of paint left to paint the truck,” Schweitzer said. “Mark did another great job.” The truck still has its original engine—a 223-cid Ford in-line six with a 3.62 x 3.60 bore and stroke. It has overhead valves, a one-barrel carburetor, an 8.1:1 compression ratio, 139 hp at 4,000 rpm and 203 lb-ft of torque at 2,000-2,600 rpm. The Ford six was a modern short-stroke engine. It delivered more efficient power and top-notch performance on regular fuel. With a shorter stroke, less internal friction was developed, so horsepower rose. Additional six-cylinder engine features included a Deep-Block design, free turn valves, high-turbulence combustion chambers, aluminum alloy pistons with chrome-plated top rings, and a precision-molded alloy crankshaft. The two men turned to the Amish to get the best woodwork for the cargo bed and the side boards. “The wood floor is like the original,” said Schweitzer. “But we redid the wood floor. We bought the wood in New London, Wis., and the Amish worker cut it. Mark actually cut it to final fit in there. He also fabricated the white rear bumper on the truck.” The 1960 F250 came with payload ratings and body allowances up to 4,000 lbs. The F250 two-wheel-drive model—like Schweitzer’s
Schweitzer didn’t have to replace a lot of parts because the F250 was fairly rust free. “It was just bent up from sitting and from the abuse it took by being used a lot at the granary.” His friend Mark Kutchenriter stored it for a decade, then restored the truck. “We switched the colour because I have a thing for Candy Apple Red,” Schweitzer explained. Kutchenriter had the truck nearly painted when he found out the paint in the two cans they bought was different. The supplier brought someone in from the paint company in Chicago. “He 40 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019

No, what grabs your attention is how its lines, curves and shape come together in a way that’s both gorgeous and tough at the same time. In many ways, trucks are a work of art. But the truth is, trucks were built for work. They were designed to haul. They were created to live on farms and worksites. They were meant to be driven. truck--had a GVW of 7,000 lbs. and featured a 118-in. wheelbase and 8-ft-long pickup bed. Ford’s “Driverised” cab offered new durability and comfort in 1959. It featured almost 59 inches of shoulder room for two-man driving comfort. The big 1,020 sq. in. full-wrap windshield provided what Ford called “Full-Vision Safety. The Hi-Dri all-weather ventilation system kept the interior dry, fresh and comfortable. Suspended pedals eliminated toe board holes, which could have caused rust. New door weather seals banished uncomfortable drafts and dirt. New inboard supports for the sun visors reduced annoying vibrations and interior noise. Custom Cab trim, such as Schweitzer’s truck features, included two-tone styling on the instrument panel and door panels. The Custom interior also had a chrome-trimmed instrument cluster and a convenient trim ring on the steering wheel. 1960 Ford Pickup Additional Info In contrast to 1959’s clean look, the 1960 Ford pickup was jazzed up considerably. The Ford truck badge emblem was centered on the face of the hood, between two vent slots. The new rectangular pattern grille extended down to include the parking lights. A thick bar at its top connected the larger, inward slanting headlight pods. This gave the truck a bug-eyed appearance. The hood side ornament looked like a stylized rocket or arrow, depending on your point of view. Improvements were made to the springs, door seals, electrical and exhaust systems. Among the standard features were a Lifeguard steering wheel, safety double-grip door locks, plain nylon-rayon-saran seat upholstery with gray vinyl bolster and seat facings, a dome light, a left-hand sun visor, an ash receptacle, a dispatch box, a coat hook, a white instrument cluster cover plate, Hi-Dri all-weather ventilation and a three-speed manual transmission. Four-wheel drive was available at extra cost, along with many other options.
The truck was restored with a new Custom interior.
The F-250 pickup was offered in Flareside and Styleside versions. It could also be ordered with four-wheel drive at extra cost. New standard features on that option were 1,200 lbs. front and 1,950 lbs. rear springs. The nominal payload rating of the F-250 pickups was 3,550 lbs.

he International Harvester Co. (both “IHC” and “IH” have been used in company logos) was formed in 1902 from several firms that merged to create an agricultural giant. IH dated back to 1831, when Cyrus McCormick (a man who the author’s grandfather worked for) invented the reaping machine. The company made light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks. This article covers the history of the smaller International trucks.
E.A. Johnson of Keystone designed a vehicle for IH called the IHC Auto-Buggy. It was a high-wheeler with a front engine that bowed in 1907. Though little more than a wagon, the Auto-Buggy offered either passenger seats or a truck body. Its large wagon-style wheels and high ground clearance were great for the muddy dirt roads of the era. After 1913, IH concentrated on making trucks. Two years later, the company brought out a new line of trucks with a water-cooled four-cylinder
Another firm that came under the early IH umbrella was Weber Wagon Co. founded in 1845. By the time IH purchased it in 1904, Weber was a well-regarded maker of high-quality farm and specialty wagons. The following year, the IH conglomerate acquired the Keystone Corp., a maker of grain and hay harvesting machines.

There are different stories about the use of a sloped-hood design. One automotive historian says this type of design made service work easier. Another says the radiator was moved behind the engine (allowing the use of a sloped hood) to protect it from teamsters driving commercial horse-drawn wagons, who were unhappy about motorized trucks tak-
ing over and would purposely drive into them to damage their radiators. Whatever the truth, these IH trucks were popular and the series lasted until 1923. The next small-truck offering was the Model S truck, which arrived in 1921 and lasted through 1929. The S models were actually uprated to 1-ton and 1-1/2-ton after a new Model S Special Delivery light-duty model arrived in 1925. This was a ¾-ton with a four-cylinder Waukesha engine, a 116-in. wheelbase and 30 x 5.25 pneumatic tires. The Special Delivery was a handsome hauler with car-like styling and factory-crafted bodies. Five body styles were offered: Pickup, Panel, Canopy, Screenside and Sedan Delivery.
changes at a rapid pace, with a new Model L arriving in 1950 and selling until 1953. The Model L was the first IH truck to feature a one-piece windshield. The design had broad, flat fenders and a flat front end with a “handlebar moustache” grille. The engine was a 220-cid 101-hp overhead-valve six. The Model R trucks that IH marketed from 1953 through 1955 looked like modernized L Series trucks. The front-end panel was now slightly concave and had an oval opening filled with a single horizontal bar with
In 1930, a new—and very eye appealing—Model AW-1 truck arrived. It featured a square-shaped, chrome-plated radiator shell, torpedo headlights and more rounded, full-crown fenders. A larger 173-cid 30-hp Waukesha four-cylinder engine was under the “butterfly” hood and 124and 136-in. wheelbases were used. Priced at $720 in the Depression Era market, the AW-1 was a buy, but didn’t sell well. They are very rare today. A chassis-only A-1 model, also ¾-ton with a 136-in. wheelbase, was added in 1931. By 1933, International needed a low-priced ½-ton truck to compete with Chevy and Ford. This resulted in a new D-1 model. It was based on a Willys design. Willys-Overland was in receivership and IH made a deal to produce a version of the truck. It was sold as a chassis or with any of the five regular body styles at prices from $360 to $630. The D-1 truck used a 213-cid six-cylinder engine that made 70 hp. It had a 113-in. wheelbase and a three-speed transmission. About 17,000 were made in calendar-year 1933. A new IH-built C-1 model was added to the mix in April 1934. This was a very handsome truck with a V radiator. It used a special 78-hp version of the 213-cid six and a 113-in. wheelbase or optional 125-in. wheelbase. The short-wheelbase chassis was $445 and the short-wheelbase pickup was $545. The longer wheelbase came in chassis-only format for $470. With production of 75,000 units, the C-1 was a rapid success. Post-Depression sales held up, so the C-1 continued to be IH’s light-duty offering through 1937. IH’s next introduction in the light truck market was called the Model K. It proved to be a reliable Army truck during World War II. The K evolved into the postwar KB, made from 1947 to 1949. The 1950s then brought
the IH logo in the centre. The hood above the grille had an air vent in it. The headlights were still inside the front panel. The 1956 and early 1957 trucks reverted to using the S designation and got a trapezoid grille with the headlights moved into the fenders. Wheelbases of 115- and 127-in. were used. The second series of 1957 models, called A-100s, arrived in the spring and honoured the company’s 50th anniversary. They had a modernized look with a wrap-around windshield. The A-100s and A-112s were ½-tons and the A-120 was a ¾-ton. New models included a Custom pickup and a Travelall wagon, as well as several Utility Pickups with crew cabs. Several 220-cid “Black Diamond” sixes were available. Four-wheel drive was a $642 factory option and added 270 lbs. There was also a gold-and-white Golden Jubilee Custom Pickup package featuring the special two-tone paint job, fibreglass bed sides and some additional special equipment. Only 500 of these were built.

models in the ½-ton range (including chassis-cab and pickup Travelette models) and seven ¾-ton trucks. In general, not much changed in the IH product line from year to year. Grilles were restyled, from time to time other styling features were tweaked and engine choices were reshuffled from time to time. Calendar year production climbed slightly into the 170,000 range. In 1968, the 200,000th Scout was built at the factory in Ft. Wayne, Ind., but overall production began to slide. IH trucks were starting to look old compared to the Chevy, Dodge and Ford competition. To bump up Scout sales, limited-edition models such as the Aristocrat were added to the offerings. Some other changes included larger windows in Traveltop models, an energy-absorbing steering wheel, additional chrome trim and a new 304-cid V-8. The trucks had all-new boxy lines with a flat, wide hood and slab sides. Two-tone paint schemes were popular. There were 33 light-duty models in the ½- and ¾-ton ranges. Very little changed in 1970.
Crisper fender lines, vertically stacked dual headlights and a new grille like that of a ’55 Chevy passenger car characterized the IH B-100 line of 1959-1960. Engine offerings were now the 220.5-cid 113-hp Black Diamond six, a 240.3-cid 141-hp Black Diamond six and a 265.76-cid 155-hp overhead valve V8. About 30,000 were sold in 1960. IHC had a big year in 1961, when it pioneered the recreational vehicle industry with the Scout. This was not merely a hard-working utility vehicle like the Jeep—it was a Sport Utility vehicle designed for passengers and available with creature comforts like doors, a convertible top and a fibreglass hardtop. Base-priced at under $2,000, the Scout used a 152-cid 93-hp Comanche Four and had a short 100-in. wheelbase. IH made 38,000 of them in the model’s first year.
The big news for 1971 was a new Scout Series II line with Traveltop and Pickup models that replaced the Scout 800B Roadster, Traveltop and Pickup models in the spring. Although both Scouts had the same 100-in. wheelbase, the Series II was completely redesigned and modernized with power brakes, power steering, air conditioning and automatic transmission becoming available. The body was lower and longer than the Scout 800 with more load space. The Scout II also had a larger
The B-Series trucks became the C-Series and had a new full-width grille with side-by-side dual headlights at either end. The front fender contours were lower and more sculpted. There were five 1/2-ton models on a 119-in. wheelbase and eleven ¾-ton models on 119-, 122-, 131- and 140-in. wheelbases, the latter being reserved for a new Travelette fourdoor pickup. Apparently, the Scout boosted sales in general and total IH calendar-year truck production came to 142,816. IH output jumped to 147,285 in 1962 when only minor product changes were made. The C-series got a convex grille and single headlights in 1963, when calendar-year production climbed to 168,296. The final year for the C-series was 1964, when 166,802 IH trucks of all types were sold. Added to the line in 1964 was a new C-900 compact fender-side pickup with the Scout’s four-cylinder power plant and a short 107-in. wheelbase. It also came in chassis-and-cab form. In 1965, the original Scout 80 became the Scout 800, which had a more car-like grille and a new Easy-View instrument panel. A new option was the Scout Turbo III version of the 152-cid Four that produced 111 hp thanks to the addition of a turbocharger. This year’s IH trucks became D Series models and got a new “electric shaver” grille. There were now 14
This 1966 Scout 800 belongs to The Automobile Gallery of Green Bay, Wis. 195.44-cid four with 111 hp as standard equipment. There was also a 232-cid 145-hp six, a 304-cid 140-hp V8 and an optional 345-cid 197-hp V8 that was rare. By 1972, calendar-year production for all IH trucks was up to 212,654. It was the fifth consecutive year of increased sales and the total dollars brought in worldwide were $3,493,000,000. To keep the line looking fresh, the 1973 Scout II got a new front end with a split grille, but the conventional light-duty trucks barely changed at all except for narrower fender badges. A Custom package for the Travelall station wagon added wood grained exterior panels. By 1975, calendar-year production for all IH trucks had dropped to 111,352. Model-year production was worse: only 25,904 Scout IIs and 6,329 pickups were made. That meant that medium- and heavy-duty trucks where accounting for somewhere around 80 percent of production. As a result, IH stopped making Metro vans (small inter-city delivery trucks), conventional light-duty pickups, Travelall station wagons and Travelette crew cab pickups.

The Scout II would survive until 1980 and the line was expanded with longer-wheelbase models such as the Terra pickup and the Traveler wagon. A six-cylinder diesel engine sourced from Nissan became a new option following the Arab oil embargo of 1973. A second energy crisis in 1979 and a long-lasting United Auto Workers strike drove Scout sales down, too. On Oct. 21, 1980, IH built its last Scout. By 1986, the company was renamed Navistar International Corp.

RV-ING: 2020 WINNEBAGO MICRO MINNIE 5TH WHEEL - 2405RG
Have a Look Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
S
o, what came first? The chicken or the egg? This is the perennial head scratcher we’ve all heard. It’s a question that can be applied to so many things – including RVs. In the case of the mew Micro Minnie fifth-wheel from Winnebago, the chicken and egg riddle translates to: what came first, the lightweight pickup truck or the lightweight fifth-wheel it could tow? This is an interesting question, particularly if we look at the numbers. Next year, the auto industry will sell over a million pickup trucks in North America; while the RV industry also hums along matching those sales by selling more than 50-percent of its total output as new fifth wheels. However, within this established market, there is a new wrinkle today – the rebirth of the midsize pickup truck market. Trucks like the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator are all new, while the GM twins (Colorado and Canyon) have only been out a few years. If you add these four into the group that never went away (Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier), you have a nice little truck segment that can also tow. Now we just need the trailers. One of these is new from Winnebago. It’s the Micro Minnie that weighs in at just over 5,000 lbs (dry). For my test, I had the use of a new 2019 Ram 1500, which for this trailer was more than adequate. Of course, the bulk of pickup sales are half-tons, so it follows that many of these trailer sales will be to owners of 1500 model trucks. But, for the mid-size truck owner, having a fifth-wheel option is 50 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019
new, and from what I experienced, it will be happily received. Still, while the numbers say the trailers are towable by some of the midsize trucks I mentioned, they do approach the upper limits that the manufacturers have set. Half-tons, on the other hand, will all easily handle these units. My test trailer had a single slide-out, was seven feet wide, featured a built-in dinette and still had room for a Queen bed. In fact, the front bedroom has a hard door and is very private as the passageway goes through the bathroom. This floorplan trick makes the bath bigger and offers privacy as doors on either side can be locked; this setup is optimal for the necessary night time excursions of guests.
Because the bath spans the width of the trailer, ample space is devoted to a sink and counter; around the porcelain toilet and the large shower opposite to these fixtures. In fact, I’d call it a shower and a half – perfect for assisting your kids (who don’t want to shower). This bath also has a skylight in the shower and a roof vent. Speaking of guests, the dinette is placed in the slideout – it converts to a two-person bed while the four-person coach opposite it flips open for another sleeping position, all made possible by the floor space freed up by the slideout. So, sleeping six is not so Minnie, is it? The private front bedroom features a Queen bed with access on either side – though a bit of climbing is involved. There is a hanging closet on either side and two large screened windows. Above is another vent (three in the trailer total) that should create a nice night time breeze. The kitchen makes good use of the space offered by the whole rear of the trailer spilling over into an L-shape. This design adds some welcome counter space for food prep and cleanup in the corner of the unit, surrounding the double sink in the middle of the counter top. The appliances are built-in to the rear wall of the RV, starting with the gas/electric refrigerator next to the stainless-steel oven with three-burner flush-mount top. Above it is a microwave (also stainless steel) and an exhaust range hood. Every other available space in the L-shape is devoted to cupboards and drawers. This space also houses the 18K BTU furnace and 6-gallon hot water system. The A/C is diffused through the ceiling from a roof-mounted 13.5K BTU unit. Two nice/smart features I noted here are the windows (two) in the walls above the counter space (nice, natural light) and a roof vent right above the cooking station. This

arrangement will let you have ample through-ventilation while cooking. The powered range hood then need only be used during inclement weather. I want to mention here that there are five floor plans available in this trailer footprint. Each has a different lifestyle emphasis. Two offer bunk beds, while one features a huge rear-of-trailer bath. I expect that whatever your current life circumstance, one of these will work
Outside, the trailer is finished using High Gloss on fibreglass walls. The roof is fully covered with a TPO material and an 18-foot power awning with LED lighting is included. There is an exterior passthrough storage location on either side of the trailer – though it’s not a full-basement setup. Still, remembering how big this trailer is, storage (in general) is well thought-out and makes use of every available space. Also note the solid fold-out entry steps. These are firmly planted on the ground when in use and while they are becoming more common on new trailers I just have to say how much I like them. They don’t sway, creek, groan or pinch your fingers – I hope every trailer in the future is built using them. There are also exterior speakers that run off the AM/FM/CD/DVD/USB/Bluetooth entertainment system. (Inside, this system is also wired into a main cabin TV station and a second optional TV for the bedroom). After spending some time with the Micro Minnie, I can see that it offers a very complete RV experience in a package that suits the vast majority of pickup truck owners. I say this because 80 percent of truck sales fall into the ½-ton category. So if you can tow on the weekend with the truck you work with all week – well that’s just good business. Now (unless you want to) - making the jump to a ¾ or 1-ton truck is pricy but necessary to handle those higher RV weights. The Micro Minnie is a refreshing low-weight option. Have a look.
for you. However, I wouldn’t call this a full-timers unit. Instead it’s more of a family adventure unit, one that may stray off the beaten path more often than some of the larger, heavier units. So, the ability to dry-camp in the Minnie is important. What backs up my impressions here are the 15-inch off-road tires running on a lifted axle. Those are also torsion axles rated at 3,700-lb each. The unit also comes prepped to accept a solar charger and panels. The TV antenna comes with a signal booster and the holding tanks are enclosed and heated. The grey water tank is oversized and the propane capacity is also increased. Another available option is an Extreme Weather Package that will further extend your range and season. 54 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019

STUCK TRUCKS
And he was so close!
If he would’ve just stayed left, he would’ve been fine.
If that truck suddenly catches, he may have to move quickly. Not sure sitting on top of a truck is the best idea in that terrain.
Another example of why you always hit the trails with a buddy.

We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool Trucks Plus hat! 62 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2019
