he all-new 2015 Ford F-150 has been awarded with the 2015 AJAC (Automobile Journalists Association of Canada) Utility Vehicle of the Year award at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, after being named the Best New Pickup by AJAC back in December. Beating out other nominees the Porsche Macan S and Subaru Outback, the all-new 2015 F-150 sheds a ton of weight for its new generation thanks to an all-aluminum body, and is also able to tow and haul more than the outgoing model. This is the second big win for the new Ford pickup as it was also named the North American Truck of the Year at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The AJAC Utility Vehicle of the Year program features the country’s top automotive journalists, using detailed criteria to evaluate vehicles in real-world driving situations on public roads, to provide Canadians with relevant consumer-driven information to take with them to the marketplace.

GM President Accepts 2015 Canadian Truck King Challenge Award in Toronto Recently, at the 2015 Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, General Motors Canada President Steve Carlisle was presented the award for the victory in the heavy-duty category at the 2015 Canadian Truck King Challenge. The 2015 GMC Sierra Denali 3500HD was crowned Canada’s Truck King for 2015 back in September, beating out the Ford F-350 and Ram 3500. The 2015 version of the Canadian Truck King Challenge put the three major HD pickup trucks against each other in a series of tests that contested the trucks’ strength and roadability. Over the course of two days of testing, five journalist judges drove the vehicles more than 2,500 test kilometres, doing tasks like towing RV trailers, hauling two tons of shingles, and running timed runs at a quarter-mile drag strip. The 2015 GMC Sierra Denali 3500HD was the consensus pick among the judges and thus was crowned the 2015 Canadian Truck King Challenge Champion.

FRESH TRACKS Next Generation of Jeep Wrangler Expected to Get EcoDiesel Options

We told you last issue that the next generation of the Jeep Wrangler is expected to get ZF’s 8-speed automatic that has become a staple across the FCA lineup. Now, an Autoblog report suggests that the new Wrangler will pair the 8-speed auto with the popular 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine. There has been talk of a diesel Wrangler for some time and now it appears Jeep is finally ready to make the jump that works 2015 Jeep Wrangler

both from a power and efficiency standpoint. The EcoDiesel V6 makes just 240 horsepower but has a whopping 420 lb-ft of torque that should provide more than enough power to get through any situation. From the efficiency side of things, the Diesel and 8-speed auto transmission pairing will offer much better fuel economy than the gasoline version as can be evidenced by the Ram 1500 and Grand Cherokee diesel versions.

Chevrolet Now Offering 2015 Silverado Custom Edition

Chevrolet recently announced the addition of the Custom package to the Silverado lineup, which is based on the popular double-cab Silverado LS and adds 20-inch aluminum wheels, chrome bumpers, a body-coloured top cap above the front bumper, and chrome mirror

Also featured is four full doors for easy access, a 40/20/40 cloth front seat, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, power windows and locks, plus the Chevrolet MyLink system with 4G LTE WiFi. Engine options on the Silverado Custom will include the popular 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 that puts out 355 horsepower, and the smaller 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 engine that has the most torque of any standard V6 in its class. Both engines feature advanced technologies such as direct fuel injection, continuously variable valve timing and Active Fuel Management, which enables four-cylinder operation during light loads for much better efficiency.

Ram Brand Trying to Further Distance Itself from Dodge

If you’ve seen the 2015 version of the Ram 1500 Laramie Limited, you’ll definitely notice the word Ram in huge block letters on both the grille and the tailgate. An Automotive News report suggests that this could be due to Ram trying to further separate itself from its Dodge roots, in large part because the majority of people still refer to the pickup lineup as the Dodge Ram despite Ram separating from Dodge six years ago. The separation was meant to allow both brands to clearly define and execute their product lineups. There is no way of

The Ford Edge has been completely redesigned for the 2015 model year and is now loaded with even more technology and greatly improved vehicle dynamics. The first Edge launched in late 2006 and helped begin to define the crossover utility vehicle segment in North America. It used a car-based design rather than a traditional truck-based one, and delivered better on-road comfort, fuel efficiency and overall driving dynamics. Now in its second generation, the 2015 version is completely new but takes what made the first a success and builds off of it. It now has a stronger, more athletic shape and has been re-engineered to add more features and technologies. Added to the lineup are two new engine options - the 2.0L EcoBoost 4-cylinder and a 2.7L EcoBoost V6 - joining the returning 3.5L naturally aspirated V6, all of which are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission. There is a mile-long list when it comes to technology and safety features on the new Edge, including Active Grille Shutters, Blind Spot Information System, a new 180-degree front camera, cross traffic alert, enhanced active park assist, hands-free liftgate, lane keeping system, active glove box knee airbag, curve control and inflatable rear safety belts, just to name a few.

Winter Ready

The 2015 Ford F-150 gets put through its paces in frigid conditions Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

N

ot having been on sale for a full year yet, Ford’s latest 2015 F-150 has already received some impressive titles including the North American Truck of the Year, and closer to home, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) Utility Vehicle of the Year. Journalists and owners alike have had some time now to put the truck through its paces in fair weather conditions, but there hadn’t been much talk about how it performs in the frigid climates of places like Eastern Canada — until now. In February, Ford held a program in the Charlevoix region of Quebec to demonstrate the F-150’s resilience to below-zero conditions, and ability to handle, go off-road and tow in snow and ice.

The big news surrounding the award-winning pickup continues to be the prolific use of aluminum to construct the body and box, which has contributed a nearly 700-pound weight loss improving everything from fuel efficiency to its power-to-weight ratio. During a presentation, Ford product marketing manager Mike Sinuita says there’s more to the story. “We didn’t set out to build aluminum trucks. We set out to build the toughest trucks ever,” says Sinuita. Here are some fun facts about the alloy: it’s stronger by weight than steel, and some magnesium and silicon is mixed in for further reinforcement; its lightweight composition allows for thicker, more dent-resistant panels; it’s naturally resistant to rust — the 12 Trucks Plus

By comparison, a snowy airfield converted into a short slalom was no problem. Activating four-wheel drive mode, the trucks took turns driving easily over a series of logs, up steep inclines and over snowdrifts, the only issue being an incident of yours truly getting stuck in a

Upholding Tradition

2015 Range Rover Evoque Story and photos by Gerry Frechette

L

and Rover has been making large, boxy, and very capable four-wheel drive vehicles for what seems like eons now. No one who knows anything about off-roading needs to have Land Rover’s abilities explained to them. But, of course, the market for SUVs is constantly changing, and the traditional utilitarian Land Rover had its appeal broadened a few decades ago with the luxurious Range Rover. As the last century wound down, the less-than-stellar compact Freelander was launched, which has morphed into larger, more traditional models. So, with car-based crossovers the hot thing to own by active, well-heeled urban residents, Land Rover set out to develop a high-style compact to play with all the other luxury brands that had such a vehicle. The Range Rover Evoque was the result. Conservative Land Rover now had the wildest-looking little crossover on the market, but would it live up to the brand’s tradition? We took it on a road trip to find out.

Our tester, a four-door “Pure Plus” model in rich red, had optional 20-inch Continental performance M&S tires, and it looked very potent just standing still, drawing lots of attention on the road. Given its fairly light weight (1,670 kg) for a well-equipped CUV, thanks to non-steel roof, hood, front fenders and rear hatch, the Ford-sourced 2.0-litre four it comes with moved the Evoque down the highway with a satisfying rush, even up the many hills we encountered. Its 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm are not top of this class, not when you can get 300hp-plus in most other luxury brands, but it is certainly adequate, and the all-important mid-range torque is outstanding. Backing up the engine is a nine-speed automatic that was smooth and apparently efficient, as we saw 8.9L/100 km as an average in mostly highway use, and that is not bad at all. Helping achieve better efficiency is the on-demand Active Driveline all-wheel drive system that disengages the rear wheels in normal usage on streets and highways. There are various opinions about the usefulness of such a system when the going gets slippery, but with the Terrain Response System that all Land Rover products have, any uncertainty is quickly dispelled. There is a ‘Normal’ setting for said pavement usage, although our tester was equipped with the ‘Dynamic’ option, which sharpened up the

18 Trucks Plus

NEW WHEELS The interior on our tester was black leather slathered with much red leather trim on the seats and doors, a combination that really pops when you first see it. The front seats, while very attractive to look at, were less than that to sit on for any length of time, as this taller driver noticed a distinct lack of support from the butt

suspension and steering, and in combination with twisting the rotary gear selector to ‘Sport,’ made the Evoque a very entertaining and capable little SUV on tight mountain curves. Much of that prowess can be attributed to Active Torque Biasing, which uses an electronically-controlled differential to distribute torque between the rear wheels, and Torque Vectoring, which redirects torque among all four wheels to counteract understeer. Heading the other direction, into slow speeds and low traction, there are three choices which are all very clear to the driver – Grass-Gravel-Snow, Mud-Ruts, and Sand. We used the latter for our run out in the desert grasslands, and the Evoque with over 8 inches of ground clearance made short work of all the slippery hills encountered. It started from rest heading uphill with no difficulty despite the wide all-season performance rubber, and the Hill Descent Control kept things slow and steady heading down.

forward, both under the thigh, and laterally. The seat just needs to be bigger, and it needs more up-down adjustment at the leading edge. Those of a smaller stature might not notice this. In any case, the interior was nicely equipped and appointed, with lots of room for the front two occupants, and with a good 380-watt Meridian audio system that included full connectivity. Available is an 825-watt system, which must be something to hear. The Evoque is unlike any other CUV, with its very high belt line and sloping roof making for small windows and resulting visibility issues to the rear, and its compact dimensions and wheels

is useful, but also towards the smaller size in this class. There is that price to pay for the swoopy exterior styling. The rear seats fold down, not quite horizontally flat, for added versatility. The liftgate was powered on our tester.

The Evoque is available in both four-door and a unique two-door design, the latter curiously costing more in each equivalent trim level. While prices range from $47K to $65K, our test unit checked in at a base price of $52,195. The Range Rover Evoque is a slightly different take on the formula for a compact SUV. It may give up a bit in interior room and power, but it more than makes up for that with high style, luxury, light weight, and mechanical sophistication allowing equally impressive performance both on- and off-road. At all that, it surely upholds the tradition of the brand.

A New Player 2015 Lexus NX 200 Turbo Story and photos by Russell Purcell

L

exus has been producing luxury SUVs and CUVs for longer than most and with a great deal of success. However, there was a hole in the lineup that needed to be filled. The Lexus NX 200 Turbo represents a brand new model for the Japanese brand and has been designed to compete in the highly competitive luxury compact utility vehicle segment. Company designers recognize that the type of buyer attracted to this segment is typically younger and usually a person who enjoys the act of driving. As a result, the NX features sporty styling, nimble handling and athletic performance. Under the hood you will find a turbocharged Atkinson Cycle fourcylinder engine with direct injection for enhanced fuel efficiency. This 2.0-litre power plant produces 235-horsepower and 258 pounds-feet of torque. This is an interesting engine, as it represents the very first combination of a water-cooled cylinder head, integrated exhaust manifold and twin scroll supercharger in the world. It is also the first application of a turbocharger to a Lexus production vehicle.

If maximizing fuel efficiency is one of the goals of your new car purchase, then I would be remiss if I failed to mention that Lexus also offers a hybrid version of this vehicle, the NX 300h. Environmentally conscious consumers tend to be drawn to the Lexus nameplate as the company (along with its proud parent Toyota) is recognized as the world leader in the production of high-efficiency and low-emission vehicles. The designers at Lexus have been working overtime to bring some new styling flair to the cars they produce, and it is obvious that the company is taking a new direction in this department. The NX 200t has loads of curb appeal, as bold styling and an aggressive stance help it stand out from its many rivals. The NX’s shape was apparently influenced by that of a diamond. The unique mix of character lines, creases and folds that highlight the vehicle’s aerodynamic body help sell this creative design concept to the eye. Like most modern Lexus vehicles, the NX 200 Turbo features the immediately recognizable spindle grille treatment. The styling of our evaluation unit was also fitted with the optional F Sport Series 2 upgrade package which enhances the look and includes a more aggressive front fascia, mesh grille, side skirts, black mirrors, F Sport badges and mild aero enhancements at the rear. This package also adds a larger 18-inch wheel which gives the vehicle a more menacing stance and helps improve handling.

The engineering team at Lexus has done an excellent job of designing this powerplant. During my week behind the wheel, I found that the turbocharger spools up very quickly, which ensures that power is always on tap, and the engine has been carefully crafted with a broad torque band to help it deliver smooth power and maximize fuel efficiency. Acceleration is brisk for a vehicle in this class and of this type, and is pretty impressive for such a small engine.

The NX 200t comes standard with several technologies designed to improve performance and allow the driver to customize handling dynamics and efficiency based on their individual needs. These include Drive Mode Select, an innovative computerized system which allows the driver to choose to operate the car in one of three individual modes - Eco, Normal and Sport - and an advanced Adaptive Variable Suspension system has been developed to bless the car with improved steering response as well as significantly reduce the effects of body roll and lean. Front and rear stabilizer bars are also employed to help sharpen overall handling.

The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox which can be manually shifted by using either the side shift gate or the steering wheelmounted shift paddles. This transmission is as good as anything Lexus produces, but I must admit that it would benefit from the addition of a couple more gears to help bolster efficiency.

The NX is well-balanced, and the wide stance and carefully engineered suspension system helped it handle more like a sports coupe than a sport utility. It responded well to driver inputs and the vehicle tracked straight and true without much body roll. The over-sized brakes were quick to respond and at no time did they exhibit any sign of fade.

NEW WHEELS Most of the switchgear and controls are within easy reach of hand and eye, and the optional Heads Up Display (HUD) ensured that I was able to keep my eyes on the road ahead when conditions demanded all of my attention. There is plenty of room for all but the tallest individuals up front, and the second-row seating area is large enough for three average sized adults. The rear seat is a 60/40-split design to help add some versatility when it comes to carrying cargo, and the outboard seating positions also offer a recline feature. The compact luxury sport utility arena is a crowded one, but the NX 200 Turbo should help Lexus gain a much larger share of this popular segment. Add to this the surefootedness of all-wheel drive backed up by advanced stability and traction control systems, and the NX proved to be a great foul weather companion. The product planning folks at Lexus are well known for the luxurious look and feel they manage to bless each of their vehicles’ passenger cabins with. The passenger environment of the NX is no exception, as it is very refined, and all the comfort, convenience, and safety features expected in a premium model are present and accounted for, including a cleverly designed wireless charging tray to help keep your devices up and running.

OFF-ROAD TIRE GUIDE The same way that no vehicle or driver is created equal, no tire is created equal either. They’ve all got different strengths and weaknesses, and each tire out there is geared toward a specific purpose, specific vehicle, and specific driver. The key is finding the one that fits you, your vehicle, and your purpose. It’s at that point when you’ll experience the true meaning of “performance”.

The concept behind the popular phrase “bringing a knife to a gunfight.” Basically, describing the idea of having the proper equipment for the task at hand. Obvious right? Well, not always when it comes to choosing tires, apparently. Let’s face it, people... just because it’s black and round, or costs a certain amount, or is made by a particular company in a particular part of the world, doesn’t always make it the proper tire to put on your vehicle. Every tire has a particular purpose, every vehicle has a particular purpose, and every driver has a particular purpose. Now, when you take each of those factors into consideration, you can easily narrow down the multitude of choices out there and pick the proper tire for your particular purpose. If you decide to ignore one of those factors and you choose a tire that doesn’t quite meet all of your expectations, then you can’t expect your vehicle to perform the way you want it to and for the purpose you want it for.

Now if that still doesn’t quite make a whole lot of sense (I’ve been told that sometimes I don’t), let’s take a look at the same concept, but in a world that has nothing to do with cars or tires. We are all Canadian, and thus we all love hockey, right? So let me put it in a way all of us hockey fans will understand. It’s obvious that hockey players are excellent ice skaters. Honestly, they’re some of the best skaters out there, if you take into consideration all the athletic manoeuvres they’re able to execute whilst wearing what are essentially just boots with a metal blade attached to them gliding on a sheet of ice. Now imagine the same hockey players going about their business, but wearing skates designed for figure skaters. They’re still ice skates right? Still just boots with metal blades gliding on the ice, right? It should be no different right? WRONG. It’s the same thing as trying to tee off on the golf course with a putter, win a boxing match with baseball gloves, dribble a football on a basketball court, or throw a touchdown with a soccer ball. I mean, you could probably try it, but you likely won’t get the desired results. Why? Because you’re not using the right equipment. I could go on and on with the analogies, but I figure at this point (at least I’d hope) you’ve been able to connect the dots and see where I’m going with this idea. The same concept applies when talking tires. Your vehicle will probably still work fine even with the wrong type of tire on it, but it won’t get you the desired or optimal results. It’s like putting an ultra-high-performance race tire on a minivan, a long-lasting eco-friendly touring tire on a supercar, or a super-aggressive competition rock crawler tire on a truck that would never leave the pavement. Sure they’ll work, but they won’t “perform”. Performance is all about having the right equipment. The last thing you’d want to do is show up to a gunfight with a knife. Or a hockey stick. Or boxing gloves. Or... okay fine I’ll stop. You get the point.

New and Improved

The all-new 2016 Kia Sorento Story and photos by Jordan Allan

I

t’s not often that you find a vehicle that has a foot in two different segments in today’s automotive world, but that’s just what Kia has with the release of the 2016 Sorento. In some light, it resembles a five-seat, sporty and compact CUV, and in others, it appears to be a seven-seater SUV with all the bells and whistles one would hope for. The classification, of course, depends almost entirely on which trim and options are selected, but regardless of the choice, Kia has a vehicle that will be able to appeal to a very large range of customers. Recently, at a media event in Mont Tremblant, Quebec, I had a chance to get some seat time behind the wheel of the new SUV and put it through its paces in some real-world testing. The new exterior design of the Sorento is very reminiscent of the outgoing model, but is now lower, wider, and longer, giving it a more aggressive and rugged stance. The meaner-looking front

end boasts a narrower headlight design and the signature “tiger mouth” grille remains, only further adding to the aggressive quotient. All-in-all, the redesigned exterior of the Sorento provides a look of a vehicle much more expensive than it actually is. The inside of the new Sorento features a sophisticated look that utilizes premium textures and high-quality materials. The infotainment system is easy to figure out and climate controls are also very simple, which was especially useful in the frigid sub-zero temperatures of the Laurentian Mountains. Road noise is hardly a factor thanks to improvements like wheel strengthening and an enlarged sub-frame, and the comfort level was high, including driver headroom which had been one of my gripes with the outgoing model. Along with the new looks comes a new powerplant option for the Korean SUV - a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes an impressive 240 horsepower with 260 lb-ft of torque. Also

NEW WHEELS just to name a few, and additional technologies such as Roll Over Mitigation (ROM) and Cornering Brake Control (CBC) were added to AWD models as standard equipment, to improve driver safety and control. A number of driver aid technologies can also be found including Vehicle Stability Management and Blind Spot Detection, which further deliver a convenient driving experience. A backup camera is standard on all models except the base, and the SX+ model adds in 360-degree camera monitoring which utilizes front, side and rear cameras to give you a bird’s eye-view of your surroundings.

available are the same 2.4-litre GDI four-cylinder and top-of-theline 3.3-litre V6 from the previous version, with the V6 being able to tow up to 5,000 pounds when equipped with AWD. All three options are equipped with an electronically-controlled six-speed automatic transmission. During the aforementioned media event in the mountains of Quebec, we were given the opportunity to test versions with the new turbocharged four as well as the V6. I found both versions to provide ample power even for the steepest of climbs, thanks in part to the advanced AWD system that automatically routes power to the wheel with the most traction. The lower, wider stance of the Sorento provided a better overall driving feel with significantly less body roll while cornering than the last generation, which helps provide it with a sporty-like feel that isn’t often found in comparable vehicles. Due to the fact that temperatures were reaching lows of -25degrees Celsius with a wind chill, it was nice to know that the Sorento was loaded with a number of available safety features that performed admirably in the less-than-ideal conditions. All models come standard with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Brake Assist System (BAS), and Antilock Braking System (ABS),

To sum it all up, the 2016 Kia Sorento is improved in almost every aspect. It is more comfortable than the outgoing version, features a better variety of engine options, boasts improved looks both inside and out, and comes with more standard safety features than ever before. All of this will go a long way in setting the Sorento apart from the plethora of vehicles in its segment, and I expect it will succeed and become a consideration for anyone shopping in this segment.

Capable SUV

2015 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk Story and photos by Benjamin Yong Folks unfamiliar with the Jeep Cherokee world may be surprised to learn that the venerated model has been in the marketplace, in one form or another, for 41 years, selling more than two-million units. A redesigned version was released last year, radically rethinking the look and feel of the mid-size crossover SUV that arguably defined the modern segment. The 2015 model year sees a small handful of changes focused on safety, comfort and fuel economy. The peaked seven-slot grille is one of the few signature visual cues still recognizable on the new “KL” platform Cherokee. One of the biggest shockers of the avant-garde styling is the pair of small sliver headlamps that aren’t actually headlamps at all, but big daytime running lights. Hidden projectors underneath, cleverly disguised as air intakes, handle the main lighting duty. With the drastic changes on the outside came a complete overhaul of the interior, as well. In fact, it’s very un-Jeep-like when you compare it to other current vehicles inside the brand, like the Wrangler, because it’s so well appointed and, dare I say, luxurious. In my Trailhawk-edition press car with the Leather Interior Group, there was red-stitched, perforated leather on the seats and various surfaces. MY2015 features an optional ventilated and memory seat package. Don’t bother looking around the cabin for a seat temperature switch or dial — everything is controlled via touchscreen using the Jeep UConnect infotainment software/hardware. The forward collision warning system gets low-speed crash mitigation added on. If I’ve made the Cherokee sound like an overly cushy SUV, don’t be fooled. The Trailhawk, in particular, is more than capable of hanging alongside its more rugged Wrangler sibling, or others in its class. Our tester was equipped with the bigger of two engines offered, a 3.2-litre Pentastar V6 making 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque (capable of towing 4,500 pounds), mated to a still-rare nine-speed automatic transmission. King of the Hammers

Story by John Harwood

T

o the uninitiated, The King of the Hammers is a very confusing event! Is it a desert race? Is it a rock-crawling event? If the first race was in 2007, why is the 2015 Nitto King of the Hammers presented by 4Wheel Parts the 8th annual event and not the 9th? Why are the drivers from the first race known as The OG13 when there were only 12 of them? The answers to these questions are not the work of supernatural forces, but rather the simple evolution of a great racing sport entering its grown-up life! The 2015 version of The Nitto King of the Hammers attracted an estimated 40,000 people to Means Dry Lake in Johnson Valley, California (AKA Hammertown) over the week of January 30th to February 7th, 2015, where fans were treated to qualifying runs, King of the Motos,

By Friday, race fans were primed for the big race with “The Kings of Hammers Past” in their Unlimited Cars showing off their skills in search of another crown. A total of 129 race cars from 23 states and 8 countries set out on the three-lap course that would take them over 215 miles attaining speeds of 100 mph over open desert, and 1 mph across rock piles twice their size in the next minute. Friday morning at 8:00am, Erik Miller is the first off the line. Randy Slawson started 23 rows back after a poor qualifying time. Miller was eventually passed by Clay Glistrap who, in turn, gave up the lead to Greg Adler. Meanwhile, Slawson picked off the slower drivers one by one through the rocky trails in pursuit of the leaders. Hammertown trails each have a name that somehow describes the terrain you are running on. Names like “Backdoor,” “Jackhammer,” “Chocolate Thunder” and “Resolution,” among others. The KOH UTV race, The Smittybilt Every Man Challenge race and lots of sponsored parties in between. The Smittybilt Every Man Challenge saw Brandon Currie for King Racing Shocks Team take the overall win. This was his first KOH race. 40 Trucks Plus

Early in lap 2, “Jackhammer” became a parking lot or worse, a California Highway during rush hour! It took some time to detour competitors around all of the congestion. At one point, Slawson ran out of gas and his brother/co-driver Mike Slawson had to run a mile back to the pits to get more.

You might think that this is all marketing fluff, but these styling cues really help the Murano — named after fine glassware produced on the Italian island with the same moniker — stand out in a crowded segment. On our test drive from Vancouver, we stopped at the side of a quiet mountain road and remarked how different (in a good way) the SUV really looks.

Futuristic Theme

The space-age slang continues in the cabin, with terms thrown around like “Zero Gravity Seats,” and “Multi-functional Communication Alley.” Even compared to the outgoing model, things are a lot more comfortable and high-tech. Both front and rear occupants are treated to NASA-inspired chairs, meaning they are constructed to reduce pressure on the back and

ith 2014 being the best year on record for Nissan Canada, and Murano sales up 39 per cent, Nissan hopes to build on that momentum with a completely redesigned version of its popular midsize crossover, which is somewhat returning to its roots. “The first generation Murano was an iconic, boxy-style SUV. The second generation featured more refinements and craftsmanship. The third generation is going back to an iconic design,” says Jill Young, manager of product planning at Nissan Canada, during a media launch in Whistler. “We wanted to find out how customers interacted with the Murano, so we reached out to them and they said they wanted a unique design, a real work of art.” If art is the overall concept, then futuristic is the theme. This is pretty evident

help battle fatigue. The windshield is acoustically laminated to help keep the cabin quiet. Passengers in the back gain access to USB ports that can charge the phone and share data with the vehicle. Although there are four trim levels (S, SV, SL and Platinum), all share the same Xtronic CVT transmission and 3.5-litre V6 engine producing 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is available with the latter three badges. Whether you choose FWD or AWD, the performance is there to make you feel confident in most situations — even powering up a big hill as we did heading to our snowy destination, helped by the 66 kilograms of weight shed from the transition to the third-gen. Last but not least, it wouldn’t be a Nissan if there weren’t plenty of safety features to mention. Depending on which grade you opt for, expect the excellent 360-degree Around View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, Blind Spot Warning, Forward Emergency Braking, Cross Traffic Alert and Predictive Forward Collision Warning.

TRUCK TECH Depending on your cooling system, you will need between 3-5 gallons of Evans once it is purged of water. I used 3 ½ but wanted extra on hand if needed. Evans coolant protects from freezing to below -40F and has a boiling point above 375F! In order to retain this ability, there can be no more than 3 percent water in your cooling system. I had to pull the drain screws from my engine block to drain all the water and blow clean the radiator, but Evans does sell a liquid you can pour into your engine once the bulk of the water is removed and it will help evaporate the remaining water from your engine.

Keeping it Coooool Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde

W

hat’s in your cooling system? Most will reply – antifreeze or water. What cools your engine? A fan. Pretty straightforward stuff, but keeping your rig cool when towing, or using lots of power when driving slow or racing, can tax even the best cooling systems. There is a lot more to your cooling system than just what’s in your radiator and what moves the air through it. Other things to consider are your thermostat opening rate, quality of hoses, your heater core and how the air flows in and out of the engine bay. If you have done an engine conversion like I have, using a V8 in a vehicle that never came with a V8, getting the proper size radiator and positioning of all the components can become a chore. Conversion companies like Advance Adapters, Novak Adapters, and radiator companies such as Afco, Griffin, BeCool and others offer matched cooling systems in all-aluminum radiator models, which offer great heat dissipation and different flow ports for engine swaps and standard stock replacement rads. However, for the swap-minded, I’ll stick to fans and fluid for this article. Typically, cars these days either come with a clutch style fan or an electric fan. The advantage of electric fans is that the engine does not have to directly line up with the radiator to centre an engine-driven fan for maximum radiator coverage. Those who race may move the rad to the rear of a vehicle or lay it further down in a hot rod application to clear a grill. All of these are perfect reasons for an electric fan. The Maradyne fan I have used for my main radiator cooling comes with up to 2,200 cfm of air movement and can be placed in either a pusher fan role – placed in front of the radiator, or in a puller configuration on the engine side of the radiator by a flip of the blade and a reverse of the polarity. Kits like this one also come with a fully integrated fan 46 Trucks Plus

shroud and easy-to-use clamp system to attach to almost any radiator. Temperature can either be controlled via your regular cooling system or a temp sensor and fan controller. In my case, the Holley fuel injection system uses water temp to adjust fueling and also has a set of parameters in the computer to adjust fan on-and-off times for up to two fans. If this doesn’t work for your vehicle, an auxiliary temp sensor like a standalone bulb-style unit can be inserted into the fins of the radiator and adjusted via the control knob. I’ll be using this style of temp controller with a second ten-inch Maradyne fan when I relocate the transmission cooler away from the front of the radiator.

Now we are going to step into something a little more unusual - coolant for inside your radiator. You will say, well, I need water and some type of antifreeze and if I have cooling issues, I’ll add some Water Wetter and maybe a higher-pressure rad cap. Water boils at 100C or 212F. When under pressure, typically from 8 lbs to 16 lbs with the radiator cap, the boiling point of a 50/50 water-coolant mix goes to above 250F, so this is why you have a pressurized rad cap with a relief spring built in, and an overflow bottle. However, once to the boiling point, water loses all of its heat transferring properties and starts to vapourize, making for a dangerous situation for not only your car but for you, if the cap releases that pressure. Utilizing Evans Waterless Coolant, you not only eliminate antifreeze, but you actually eliminate the water. Evans Coolant has the ability to resist freezing to -40 and continues to cool far past water’s boiling point without pressurized rad caps, as the boiling point of Evans Coolant is above a whopping 375 degrees. The 5.0L in my TJ regularly runs into the 220+ range during hard snow wheeling conditions (yes, you can overheat when it’s cold out) but now, with Evans in the rad, I don’t have any fluid loss, and the engine continues to be protected even during hard use. Protecting your cooling system protects your engine, so make sure you are maintaining that system like you would any other on your vehicle. Evans Waterless Coolant http://www.evanscooling.com Maradyne cooling fans http://www.maradynehp.com

Electric fans are great for engine conversions and this Maradyne kit comes with a built-in fan shroud and 2,200 cfm of cooling capacity. There are an array of fan sizes, but this one covers a full 16-inch radius and worked perfectly in my Jeep.

One fan, two directions. The Maradyne fan is reversible, which means it can be mounted in front of or behind your radiator by flipping the fan blades over and reversing the polarity of the fan motor. The fan kit is only 4 inches thick so takes very little space in the engine bay.

OFF-ROADING

Jeep Summer Holidays

Trailfest is a continuation of the defunct Canadian Jeep Jamboree events. Where the Jeep Jams left off, the London and area Jeep Owners Club stepped in and kept this great event going! Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde

P

lanning your summer holidays? Why not include your Jeep or trail rig! There are events all across the USA (and a few in Eastern Canada) that suit every type of off-roading level. You don’t need to be the owner of a big bad 4x4 to have a great time and get off the beaten track to see some real countryside. For Jeep owners, the first thing that comes to mind are the Jeep Jamborees, and well, there are 30 of those from as close as Oregon in the west and for those in the east, Michigan all the way to the southern USA. Need something closer? In Washington State, one of my favourite events is the PNW4x4 Jamboree near Naches. The incredible wheeling is from stock to modified and takes you out onto amazing lava flows to deep west coast mud. This one fills up very fast, though. I’ve been to the PNW Jam and I have returned to Naches many times after because of the amazing scenery, and there are Washington state trail maps and great trail markers all over the Manatash Ridge if you’re up to explore on your own. Want to visit Moab? Well, the Easter Jeep Safari is past now (I’ve been six times and miss it already, knowing I’m not going this year), but the Red Rock four wheelers host their yearly Labour Day campout – on, well… Labour Day! Moab in July and August is just too darn hot even for the locals. Also, if you’re into Land Cruisers, the Cruise Moab event may be for you! If you go, don’t worry about having a Jeep; rent a side-by-side and a trailer for the day – lots of trails are more than doable in a side-by-side. The All-4-Fun event attended, they were event put on by the between four major Chaffee County.

Not all the trails in Colorado are this rocky, but clinging to the edge of this old mining trail was pretty epic. All-4-Fun rotates between four major areas in Colorado each summer. My trip was in the Silverton area.

Not just for Jeeps, I went to All-4-Fun in my Toyota on 33-inch tires. That peak in the background is our destination and reached 14,000 ft in altitude! This is August and yes, that is snow up there!

Watch how it works!

Dunefest in early August, with a ton of sand sports events taking place at Winchester Bay close to Reedsport, Oregon. Or if you’re an early Bronco enthusiast, you might want to check out the North West Bronco Round Up. The year I went, it was still called SOB (Son of Beach), then it was the Unevent for five years, and now it’s formed into something solid again. What’s better than 150 classic Broncos on the sand dunes! Heck, just go on your own and check out the amazing seaside dunes, bring an air compressor and flatten your tires for Die Trying is an epic trail close to Montrose, Colorado. A small group from the All-4-Fun event went to challenge this very hardcore route. This spot also has a couple of other epic trails called Cactus Canyon & Cactus II. This was far more than my little 33-inch tire-equipped Toyota could handle, so I walked and shot pictures in 110 degree heat. All our water was tea warm in a short period of time. Note to self – do not do these trails in August ever again – but I sure am glad I was there now - it was an epic day!

some fun – just don’t forget your OHV pass and flag (check any sports or ATV shops along the dunes for those). I find Quad and side-by-side rentals and tours are quite pricy on the dunes, buy they are all options as well. Let’s not leave out Canada; while there are few western events, there are lots from Ontario east. How about Camp NL in Ontario put on by the Ontario Federation of 4WD Recreationalists or the Trailfest by the London & Area Jeep Owners Club or maybe the Maritimes for the 2015 NSJC Jamboree June 18-21, 2015.
