Ram Unveils Newly Designed 2017 Power Wagon Pickup

R

am has recently unveiled the newly-designed 2017 Power Wagon that is based on the Ram 2500 Heavy Duty 4x4 Crew Cab model, and features the front grille design of the off-road-inspired Ram 1500 Rebel. The newly designed model will feature a number of offroad-specific enhancements such as a unique suspension with about two inches of lift, locking differentials, and a 5,443 kg (12,000 lb) winch. In addition, the new Power Wagon will feature new colour options, lighting, wheels, and legacy graphic cues from the 1979-1980 Macho Power Wagon. Inside, the truck has been upgraded with unique technical grain seats finished in Diesel Grey and Black with Sedoso fabric inserts that are embossed with the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tire tread pattern. Under the hood of the new off-road-oriented pickup will be the 6.4-litre Hemi 16-valve V8 engine that pushes out 410 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and a peak torque rating of 429 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm. As previously mentioned, the Power Wagon’s suspension system is specifically designed for the vehicle and includes Bilstein shocks, modified control arms, spring rates and more than two inches of lift. Finally, towing capacity is rated at 4,550 kg (10,030 lbs) and payload is 685 kg (1,510 lbs).

Mercedes Unveils Affordable Bare-Bones Sprinter Model in Chicago Mercedes-Benz used the 2016 Chicago Auto Show as a platform to introduce a new model of the popular Sprinter cargo van called the WORKER. The WORKER model will offer the simplest and most straightforward equipment available throughout the Sprinter Van lineup yet will continue to offer more standard equipment than other brands such as a standard diesel engine, Bluetooth connectivity, and Crosswind Assist. Available only in white, the WORKER offers maximum capability and customization potential for aftermarket van interiors and exteriors, and is offered with a 144-inch wheelbase and a standard-height roof. Inside, the WORKER’s standard 319.1 cubic feet of cargo volume provides tons of rooms for racks, bins, shelves, cabinets and toolboxes. A steel floor is standard and can be left unfinished or can be customized with optional wood floor or any floor covering of choice. It’s not immediately known if the WORKER model will make its way to Canada, but with a $32,495 starting price south of the border, it would certainly do well. Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016

Chevrolet Introduces 2016 Silverado 4WD with eAssist Chevrolet has announced recently that a select number of 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 4WD pickup trucks will be offered with eAssist technology, which is a new mild-hybrid electrical system that leverages many technologies and components from other vehicles in the Chevy lineup. This includes battery cells from the Malibu Hybrid and software controls that were developed for the Volt. These technologies allow Chevrolet to make a hybrid pickup that delivers uncompromised capability and up to 9 percent better fuel efficiency while driving in the city. The lightweight system only increases the curb weight of the truck by approximately 45 kg (100 lbs) and will deliver an additional 13 horsepower and 44 lb-ft of torque from the electric motor. The system is paired to the Silverado’s 5.3-litre EcoTech V8 engine with the 8-speed automatic transmission, and provides an electric power boost, stop/start capability and regenerative braking which recovers energy while braking to recharge the onboard battery system. Chevy will be offering a limited number of the 4WD eAssist truck in California in 2016 and says that based on customer feedback, production will be adjusted for the 2017 model year.

Nissan Releases Details of All-New Half-Ton Titan in Chicago Recently at the Chicago Auto Show, Nissan announced the details of the all-new half-ton version of the recently redesigned Titan XD pickup truck simply called the Titan. The new Titan truck will share a strong resemblance with the XD version and will compete in the ultracompetitive half-ton segment, whereas the XD provides a unique bridge between a half-ton and ¾-ton truck. The Titan will be built on a separate chassis and is approximately 228.1 inches long, which is 14.7-inches less than XD, but the trucks share the same width. It will be available in 4x2 or 4x4 drive options and also offers three cabin configurations which are Crew Cab, King Cab, and Single Cab. Additionally, three bed lengths will be available - 5.5-, 6.5-, and 8-feet, and the Titan will be available in five trim levels – S, SV, PRO-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve. Powering the new model will be Nissan’s 5.6L Endurance V8 gas engine that pushes out 390 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque, and it will be paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. It will go on sale in the summer of this year.

military-grade aluminium-alloy body, high-strength steel frame, high-output 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine, the 10-speed transmission, torque on demand transfer case and the race-optimized long-travel suspension. The Raptor’s looks are very reminiscent of Trophy Trucks which are the most powerful class of off-road pickups, and the new model is six inches wider than a standard F-150 for increased off-road stability. The race truck will also utilize other components of the production Raptor including a Torsen front differential, first-ever dual exhaust, and Ford Performance 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels with next-gen BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires. There are some modifications made to the truck that include a custom-fabricated roll cage, MasterCraft seats with five-point harness safety belts, LED light bars, racing fuel cell, and Lowrance GPS. To even further enhance capability in all situations, the new F-150 Raptor features a Terrain Management System that allows drivers to select modes to optimize driving dynamics to their current environmental conditions.

Jeep to Make Debut in India at the 2016 Auto Expo in New Delhi The Jeep brand has marked another milestone as it has recently been introduced to the Indian market at the 2016 Auto Expo in New Delhi. Jeep will begin selling to the market in mid-2016 and will boast a lineup of three SUVs - Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, Jeep Grand Cherokee and the high-performance Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. Jeep is taking its business to India at a time of record sales after selling more than 1.2 million units worldwide in 2015, and also during its 75th anniversary year in 2016. FCA had announced last year its plans to invest approximately $280 million in its manufacturing joint venture, Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited, with Tata Motors Limited. This investment in the manufacturing facility in Ranjangaon, India will support the production of a new Jeep vehicle that is expected to begin production in 2017. The Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Grand Cherokee will be sold with diesel and gasoline engines through a network of dealers in key metro cities.

FIRST DRIVE: TOYOTA TUNDRA TRD PRO

Entering the Canadian Market Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Toyota Canada

T

here is a tan-coloured pickup truck in my driveway that looks a little out of place. It’s the 2016 Toyota Tundra, but specifically – the TRD Pro version of the truck. I say out of place because the tan colouring is meant to complement the dry, dusty deserts of Baja and California – the natural environment of this off-road runner, not the frozen February landscape of Ontario. However, after just a few days of local escarpment ridge running, the truck feels just as much at home here as I’m sure it does on the desert flats of the US southwest.

10 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016

Starting this year, the TRD Pro is available in Canada. That’s a first, as it’s been available in the States for many years. And, that’s what’s exciting – this truck may have been born in the desert, but where are there more rugged off-road conditions than in the Great White North? Sand is overrated; if it handles snow and mud as well, it will be a welcome addition to the Toyota truck lineup. But a lesser-published fact is that this newest Tundra now offers an integrated trailer brake controller and a 142-litre fuel tank (the largest of all the brands). These two features were missing off the 2015 upgrade, although they had been much anticipated. These oversights have now been corrected and are on this TRD Pro – but more importantly are also available on the regular Tundra line this year. Kudos to Toyota for not waiting till the next generational update to add two items that were obviously missing. Now if they had only added a heated steering wheel. If you were at the Toronto Auto Show in February, you probably saw the shiny black one at the Toyota display. You knew it by the embossed badging on its metal flanks – and by the brilliant red colour on its oversized coil springs that peaked out from be-

hind the aggressive off-road tires. It’s got TRD Pro written all over it (even on the exhaust pipe tips) – but it’s what’s underneath that makes this truck special. It’s all about suspension and traction. The truck is sprung at all four corners with Bilstein shock absorbers. These use a remote reservoir system that constantly changes the internal shock pressure to counter the feedback of the terrain. The shocks are surrounded by heavy coils and leaf springs – both of which also give it extra ground clearance and the ability to soak up rutted, potholed roads at speed. Underside protection starts with a large engine and oil pan skid plate and similar plates for the transfer case and fuel tank. It all rides on 18-inch black alloy wheels. Inside the cab, TRD Pro styling cues are matched with black leather seats with red stitching and badges in the centre console and on the floor mats. Like other Tundras, the Pro is equipped with a premium audio system and 7-inch centre stack display that is integrated with satellite radio, a navigation system and backup camera. Powering the truck is Toyota’s 5.7-litre V8. It makes 381 hp and is coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The 4WD system on the Pro offers the usual two-speed transfer case for High and Low range engagement along with its Sequential Shift Mode Active Traction Control, which is an auto limited slip control that works through the transfer case, front to back. So, rather than a set amount of torque pushing front

12 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016

and rear wheels, the Toyota system uses A-TRAC to push power to the axle that needs it. And, it works in either High or Low range. The other half of this system is called Automatic Limited Slip Differential. What this gobble-de-gook means is that the TRD Pro does not have a rear differential locker, in the conventional sense. Instead, its system uses its rear brakes to simulate the action of a mechanical limited-slip differential. By braking the slipping wheel, it drives torque to the wheel that has traction. The braking does not limit engine power and this combination of A-TRAC and Auto LSD creates a good point-to-point traction system that switches on the fly. This model will be available in either Double Cab or the full-sized Crewmax version. Each is paired with either the 5.5-foot (on the Crewmax) bed or the 6.5-foot cargo box on the Double Cab. Apart from people and gear, these trucks will also tow up to 9,700 lb. The tow package includes the trailer brake controller that’s new this year; 4- and 7-pin connectors and a supplemental transmission cooler (which also has an in-dash temperature gauge) and heated towing mirrors. The Tundra TRD Pro series pickups are now on sale across Canada and start at an MSRP of $54,475 for Double Cab and $56,975 for the Crewmax model. 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016

The Tacoma badge in some shape or form has not stopped production since the ‘60s, though for many years it had no name. It started as the Stout in the ‘60s, then the Hi-lux in the ‘70s, then in the ‘80s, they could not come up with anything witty, it seems, so it had no name. Finally, in 1995, the badge Tacoma came about.

he compact truck segment has undergone a lot of changes in the past five years. Ford stepped out of the segment completely in 2012 (though the Nissan Frontier, long a rebadged Ranger, continues, as does the Ranger in other markets). GM stopped production of the Colorado/Canyon platform after an 8 year run in 2012 (still produced for Brazil) though its predecessor, the S-10 pick-up, had a healthy run from 1982-2005. Also, Dodge stepped away from the mid-sized truck segment in 2011 after a 24 year production run of the Dakota. What we have now is a model market half what it was just a few years ago in North America, but I can’t say that about the size of

After a brief hiatus, GMC came back into the game with an allnew Canyon/Colorado for 2015, but its small trucks have also undergone an array of names since the ‘70s when it rebadged the Isuzu Faster into the Chevy Luv (not sure which of those names is better but it was the ‘70s), then to the S-10 platform and onwards to the Colorado/Canyon.

What we have in the Toyota Tacoma and the new Canyon/Colorado are much-refined versions of those historical trucks – no more are they cheap or budget-minded “haul stuff “ machines. They have forged a market segment for themselves and are as refined and capable as many of their larger half-ton cousins (though that size gap shrinks all the time) and very good everyday vehicles with all the creature comforts of well-appointed sedans. GMC Canyon My day job is for a company with four GMC Canyons in the fleet. I drove one for two years as my work truck. I didn’t like it. At 200,000 km, all of them had a host of warning lights on the dash and other electrical issues, and most of the seats are crushed on the outside edge, making them terribly uncomfortable. Needless to say, I went into this review pretty jaded. This new truck is nothing like its predecessor either in ride quality, fit and finish inside and out, or general comfort. The entire platform is much improved as is the smooth-running V6 engine found in our tester. A very unique surprise is the option of a 2.8-litre I-4 Duramax diesel, a first for this segment. The interior is just a “reduced size” version of the Sierra/Silverado dash layout and that is not a bad thing. Price as tested was in the $45,000 range and it came with every option less leather seats. Ride quality was excellent and interior noise well controlled; fuel consumption of 12.2L/100K mixed driving

was acceptable but not overwhelming. Headroom was very good and the power adjustable seat made it easy to find a good sitting position. For quietness, overall ride quality and interior feel – Edge to the Canyon. Reliability: Unknown – track record no help. Toyota Tacoma Like the Canyon, this is no small truck. It feels big on the road (it is) yet surprisingly cramped inside. With no height adjustment to the seat, you’re looking through the top two inches of the window and my hair was brushing the roof (I’m not overly tall). This truck NEEDS a lower seating position and a power adjustable seat. Fit and finish are typical Toyota, which is excellent. The new 3.5-litre, DOHC, Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i) V6 replaces the 4.0-litre found for years in the Toyota truck platform; a 2.7-litre 4-cylinder is also available. The engine is a smooth runner, though the VVT system comes on a little harsh when pushed. While the truck has a nice refined ride, the interior noise is greater than the Canyon and the spring rate a little stiffer. Past the seat height issue, the interior is well laid-out and the seats comfortable. Fuel consumption was comparable to the Canyon with similar horsepower and torque numbers. Price was also very close at $46,000 though the Canyon was better equipped for the price. This is undeniably a Toyota product and will keep the Toyota faithful happy for years to come. Reliability: The edge has to be Toyota. I have a colleague with 440,000 kms on his FJ Cruiser and it still drives excellently (no lights anywhere on the dash) – though long term rust has always been a Toyota truck issue.

Spring Truck Maintenance

Story by Howard J Elmer

save you many wasted hours sitting on the side of the road.

W

1. Battery: Summer heat is just as hard on batteries as winter cold. For spring, clean and tighten terminals, but also have it stress-tested to determine the health of the battery for the coming heat waves.

inter road conditions demand greater concern and vigilance from truck owners. After all, no one wants to break down in sub-zero temps. So, with the arrival of spring, we tend to take a deep breath and enthusiastically dive into our warm weather work and pleasures – all without giving the truck a good once-over. I mean, it’s nice out now – what could happen? Lots. Winter takes its toll and if you don’t do a oncearound inspection in the spring, that winter stress may well cause you grief right into summer. Here are a seven items to check, a list of preventative maintenance items that may cost you an hour but might just

2. Diesel Emissions Fluid: For any diesel truck, this should be a normal part of everyday maintenance. However, as towing season is upon us, it’s good to remember that towing boats and RV trailers can easily double the normal consumption of DEF Fluid. Make sure it’s topped up before your summer road trip. 3. Canopies and Tonneau Cover care: Canopies and Tonneau covers keep winter out of our truck beds and, in doing so, get covered in salt residue and road grime. This stuff isn’t only corrosive; it also gets into every nook, cranny, hinge and gear system. Wash everything down with soap – plain water won’t do it. Pay special attention to all the nooks and crannies, and a little water-repelling lubrication is called for to keep everything loose and limber once it’s clean. 4. Undercarriage: Out of sight, out of mind. This is how many owners treat a truck’s undercarriage, making it the most often-overlooked part in the spring tuneup. It shouldn’t be. Because of the way a ladder-frame is constructed, it gathers more dirt, grime and corrosive salt residue than a uni-body car. So get in there with the power

at all welds and bolt heads where a hitch is attached to the frame – nobody wants to see their trailer in the rear view mirror disappearing into the distance as you roll down the highway. 6. Electrical hookups: Winter grime and corrosion are probably toughest on electrical lines and connections. Get a tester and check for current in all sockets. Clean the sockets and lubricate with light lithium grease. Pay special attention to ground wires – they are always the first to rust right off the frame. washer and use the soap and degreaser – pay special attention to the cab and box separation and the engine cradle. 5. Hitch: Have you used your hitch this past winter? Was the ball left in? Now, when you need it, can you be sure it isn’t rusted into place? This is the surprise many owners encounter when they go to hook up for the first pleasure trip of the spring. Clean and lubricate all parts of the hitch receiver, ball and pins before you intend to head-out. Check for corrosion damage

7. Tire condition: Before hitting the road, inspect tire tread, but just as importantly, sidewall condition. Look for cracks and bulges that might indicate ply failure. Also remember that summer heat adds one to two pounds of pressure for every 5C rise in temperature. Towing also heats tires, so check pressures often. The added weight and heat stress may just be the straw that breaks your tires’ back. Anticipate this problem and replace rubber accordingly. Oh, and don’t forget to check the trailer tires too.

RV-ING: WINNEBAGO ITASCA SUNSTAR LX 27N

Bigger is Not Always Better

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

B

igger is not always better; well at least in the case of the Itasca Sunstar. This Class A motorhome is just 28’3” long – which is similar to many Class C’s and even in the range of some B-Plus units. Why does this matter? Because with this compact Class A chassis, you still get all the height and basement storage that these motorhomes typically offer, yet the Sunstar drives so much smaller than it looks. Still, if you shell out big cash for a Class A, you don’t want to be cramped, so the Sunstar, while not long, is wide with three slideouts and a queen-sized dropdown bed over the cockpit that serves as a full second bedroom without eating up more space when not in use. But back to the driveability of this unit. I always find it fun to tell prospective RV owners that most Class A units drive less than 12,000 km a year (even those of full-timers). This fact is always cause for surprise as people expect that a motorhome, by definition, is driven a lot. Fact is, they spend way more time parked than in drive. As for this Itasca Sunstar, it may well be used in the same way; however, this unit’s road manners do beckon it to be driven more than some. Built on the Ford F53 Chassis, its tighter wheelbase offers a firm, responsive ride. The shorter length means less tail-swing in turns which also translates to less centrifugal force pushing the coach in directions other than the one you want it to go in. These are just two attributes that make for a comfortable, relaxed ride. And, while I have always understood the popularity of fifth-wheels in 42 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016

the RV market place, I must admit that I love that huge windshield and tall seating position that you can only get in a Class A. It’s like driving your big screen TV down the road! Better in fact, as this view isn’t flat. The vista stretches out in a 180-degree panorama through the curved glass and the seat’s height means you look right over traffic, which brings the distant horizon into sharper focus. Of course, to appreciate the view, you need a relaxed ride – one that comes without the white-knuckle experience of some less road-friendly models. With a decent, controlled ride, the driver (and co-pilot) can relax and enjoy the scenery sliding by during every drive, be it short or long. The cockpit also lends itself to comfort. The Sunstar features multi-function high-backed Ultraleather seats with adjustable armrests and fixed lumbar supports. That huge windshield is also tinted and has large sunvisors, and on either side are fans for clearing the glass or just offering a pleasant breeze. The steering wheel tilts, the power mirrors have their own defrost and, of course, it has cruise control. The rear view camera uses a six-inch colour monitor in the centre dash – also home to AM/FM radio and USB plug-ins for direct phone device connections. On the co-pilot’s side is an in-dash workstation with its own USB and 12V powerpoint. The countryside around London, ON, is flat farmland, so I didn’t get a chance to feel the Sunstar’s hill climbing ability, but then, the Triton V10 is a long-serving motorhome engine with a decent reputation. On the flats, it was more than adequate – whether on the countryside lanes or merging on the highway. What I noted during the drive (again thanks to the shorter chassis) was an almost complete absence of hobby horsing going over bridges, railway crossings and on washboard roads. There is some side-to-side sway, as you’d expect from a coach this tall, but nothing to cause discomfort – even in brisk turns. The Triton engine makes 362 hp and with a GVWR of 18,000 lb is a good match for this unit. Getting that power to the ground is a TorqShift 5-speed automatic transmission that also features

tow/haul mode. Winnebago assumes most owners will use a towed vehicle at least some of the time, so includes a 5,000-lb hitch and 7-pin electrical connection as standard equipment. So while the drive is great, when you do finally get to your destination, the little Sunstar opens up like a circus-tent. The large passenger side slide holds the whole kitchen and a chest of drawers in the master bedroom. A smaller opposite slide in the master pushes out a built-in wardrobe. Now there is a full walk-around for the 60x80-inch Queen bed with nightstands and shirt closets above on each side. A hard, sliding door ensures privacy. Speaking of privacy, the bathroom is large, with a corner sink across from a huge semi-circular shower (with skylight). It is also located mid-ships. This location offers equal access to the master bedroom occupants and the guests that will utilize that drop-down Queen bed up front. By the way, this is a powered unit, which for safety operates with a key, so kids can’t have fun with it while grandpa is driving. That third slideout houses the built-in dinette. Its position opens up the kitchen floor space. However, with the driver and

throughout the coach is carried right through the kitchen with a wood-panelled refrigerator and large double-door pantry. Flooring throughout the unit is hard-wearing vinyl that has the look of marble tiles – even in the bedroom. Frankly, for cleaning purposes, this is ideal. The only broadloom is found on the engine doghouse and under the dinette table. HVAC in the Sunstar is managed with a 14,000 BTU AC unit and a 30,000 BTU low-profile basement furnace with in-floor duct distribution. To provide AC power when you are boondocking, Itasca includes a 4,000-watt Cummins Onan MicroQuiet gas generator. Shore power, or the geni, also feed the twin deep-cycle batteries. These have an auto charge control, while the dashboard has a chassis battery switch (separate from the house batteries) that won’t let you drain the engine’s starting power.

passenger seats swiveled around, it also creates the living room area. That makes the dinette the centre of the action – with the TV on the wall behind it. Still, it too serves a second purpose by folding down into overnight accommodation; so, in a pinch, you can sleep six, though I see this as a unit for two with time to travel. The kitchen slideout does a neat trick - it pushes out to reveal a fixed counter that contains the sinks. When extended, the kitchen is now L-shaped and with the sinks in the L, it clears a large amount of counter space next to the three-burner stove. This stove also comes with an oven, and a range hood above it is also part of the built-in microwave. The hardwood cabinetry

Outside, you have multiple basement storage compartments, with lighting and rubber-sealed slam-shut doors. The entrance step is powered and automatic. Above it is a powered patio awning, and a porch light with interior switch welcomes you home. So, while I liked the compact driveability of the 27N, the Sunstar line actually features seven floorplans built on similar chassis that range in length from 26 to 37-feet. Each has slides with the larger units sporting several. Interiors can be customized by swapping out dinettes for couches or other available variations. But, for me, it’s the drive that matters in this window on the world.

OFF-ROAD: 2016 NITTO KING OF THE HAMMERS

Hammer Time! Story by John Harwood

T

he 2016 Nitto King of the Hammers took place the first week in February. Actually the week began with the opening of Hammertown on the 29th of January with the King of the Motos running first on the 31st. 4Wheel Parts qualifying for the big Ultra 4 race went Tuesday and Wednesday, the 2nd and 3rd of February, as well as the Polaris Rzr KOH UTV race on the Wednesday. Thursday saw the Smittybuilt Every Man Challenge take place. Friday was Hammer Time! This was the 10th King of the Hammers and there were a number of competitors with two victories already. While they had their sights set on the hat trick, there were plenty of other racers that would challenge that idea! The King of the Motos was the first event. The race consisted of two laps. The first was a pre-running lap that determined the running order for the second lap. Team KTM finished 1-2 with Cody Webb and Taylor Robert. Colton Haaker rounded out the podium. 4Wheel Parts Qualifying for the big race started on the Tuesday. By the end of qualifying, Jason Scherer was the fastest and Loren Healy was 2nd. Erik Miller and Bailey Campbell were a disappointing 27th and 33rd respectively. This year’s competition brought a few desert racing legends out to give it a try. Rob MacCachren and Robbie Gordon ran in the UTV race and Rob Mac also ran in the big Ultra 4 race. The Polaris Rzr King of the Hammers UTV race was won by Blake Van De Loo. Branden Sims finished 2nd and Chad Hughes came in 3rd. Baja Legend Rob Mac was an impressive 6th and Robby Gordon in his new Arctic Cat 21st. 50 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016

Thursday was The Smittybuilt Every Man Challenge. Brad Lovell was victorious in 4.5 hours, and the man who builds the baddest Ultra 4’s out there, Bomber Fabrication’s Randy Slawson, was second, arriving ten minutes later. Soon, it was Friday morning and time for the 10th annual Griffin King of the Hammers presented by Nitto Tires. It was to see these beasts, with their screaming horsepower rip up trails and fly across the open desert, that race fans came to Hammertown for, and there were many stories of glory, perseverance, determination and heartache before the day was done. In the end, it was Erik Miller who crossed the finish line first in 7.5 hours. He ran a flawless race after qualifying so far back. Jason Scherer, who was the fastest qualifier, finished second a half-hour behind Miller. Raul Gonzales was third. Fourth and fifth spots went to father and daughter Shannon Campbell and Bailey Campbell. The 19 year-old

Bailey became the first female to finish in the top 10. Her brother Wayland finished 15th. Randy Slawson was 8th, Rob MacCachren was 13th. A couple of notable DNFs were Levi Shirley and Loren Healy. Healy blew the engine on his new car prerunning. He raced his back-up and gave it a good run but a bad starter ended his day. Well, there were no hat tricks for anyone this year, but with his win at The 2016 Nitto King of the Hammers, Erik Miller joins the group of two-time winners. The battle next year will be even tougher! 52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2016
