Chevrolet has recently announced that the Silverado 1500 pickup will come with some significant updates for the 2016 model year. An updated, bolder look will be featured with a more muscular appearance and a new front end design. Additionally, the 2016 Silverado will have a more sculpted hood as well as dramatic lighting effects to further enhance the look. Other changes that will be made for the new year include the extended use of Chevy’s 8-speed automatic transmission, updated Chevy MyLink infotainment systems that will now feature support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, plus additional safety technologies. Chevrolet says that the refresh of the Silverado is part of the aggressive strategy to build on Chevy Trucks’ current momentum, as sales numbers have seen a steady rise in the early part of this year. More details about the updated 1500 will be available closer to the public debut.

Outgoing Dodge Grand Caravan May Not be Put to Rest as Quickly as Originally Thought

TELEPHONE: (604) 629-9669

As part of FCA’s five-year plan that it has laid out, the Dodge Grand Caravan was set to retire in 2016, which would allow the company to put all of its minivan-focus on the next-generation Chrysler Town & Country. According to an Automotive News report, Fiat Chrysler plans on continuing production of the Dodge minivan at least into the 2017 model year, where it will apparently be built alongside the new version of the Chrysler Town & Country. A document obtained by Automotive News shows that the 2016 Grand Caravan will begin production in August 2015 and end in August 2016. The 2017 version of the van is scheduled to begin on August 23, 2016. Production could still

FRESH TRACKS seemingly end in 2016 but that is only if the company decides on a short 2017 model run to finish things off. This is especially important to customers here in Canada where the Grand Caravan continues to have the strongest sales of any minivan offered.

Toyota Unveils the 2016 Hilux to Global Markets

Toyota has recently introduced its new 2016 Toyota Hilux to the global market in Sydney and Bangkok. The new model marks the eighth generation for the capable pickup and brings with it an upgraded interior, new frame and suspension, plus better fuel economy. Due in global showrooms in October of this year, the new Hilux will have a 7-inch multimedia touchscreen as well as a new information screen between the speedometer and tachometer. Engine options will vary depending on the markets, but in Australia, four engine options will be

aluminum construction, black running boards, smoked headlamps, unique body side graphics and badging, plus special edition seats with Alcantara inserts and red stitching. The new SYNC 3 system will replace Sync with MyFord Touch, featuring enhanced voice recognition, high-speed performance and a capacitive touch screen with an easier-to-understand interface. The new Pro Trailer Backup Assist will make it easier for drivers to back a trailer up to launch a boat or simply park in the driveway. The technology will allow drivers to steer a trailer instinctively, by turning a knob left or right. The system leverages advanced camera technology, and has been under development and testing for almost a decade. Finally, the 2016 F-150 with the 5.0L V8 engine will offer a gaseous-fuel prep option that makes it capable of running on CNG or propane.

Buick Introduces New 2016 Encore Sport Touring

Buick has recently unveiled the new 2016 Encore Sport Touring which is the most spirited rendition of the popular crossover vehicle. In addition to an all-new turbocharged engine, the Sport Touring edition is further distinguished by unique exterior cues such as a rear winged spoiler and

offered including two new turbo-diesel engines and two gas engines. All engine options will be paired to a new 6-speed auto transmission or manual transmissions. Thirty-one different variants of the Hilux will be offered in Australia, with three cab styles and three trims. Unfortunately, the Hilux won’t be gracing our roads here in North America, but is another fine example of the plethora of small-to-mid-size trucks that aren’t available in our market.

Ford to Offer a Few New Features for the 2016 F-150

Ford has recently released information regarding the 2016 version of the F-150, and it will now offer new Special Edition Appearance Packages, SYNC 3, new towing technology, and an alternative fuel capability. The Special Edition Package for the XLT and Lariat trims adds all-new 20-inch premium wheels with an anodized dark-painted

18-inch aluminum wheels. The new 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine utilizes direct injection to help it generate 153 horsepower with 177 lb-ft of torque, paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The new model will also feature Stop/Start technology which automatically shuts down the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and automatically restarts once the driver takes their foot off the brake pedal. All-New 2017 F-150 Raptor Completes Initial Desert Durability Testing

Ford originally revealed the all-new 2017 F-150 Raptor back at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit as the toughest, smartest, and most capable off-roader it has ever created. Now, a few months down the road from that, the blue oval company has just completed more than 1,000 miles (1,609 km) of grueling desert testing in the southwestern United States. The 66-mile (106-km) route featured a wide variety of surfaces such as sandy washes, deep-rutted slit beds, steep climbs in deep sand, and slow crawls through very tight trenches. The Raptor reached speeds of up to 100 mph in some places and achieved an average speed of right around

50 mph, and is 25 percent faster than the outgoing Raptor based on lap times. In order to further push the new pickup, the Raptor completed a tabletop jump consisting of a steep ramp up to a twofoot plateau, then a step-off back to level ground. As is the case with all of Ford’s trucks, engineers aimed to push the new model harder in just a few short days than it will be pushed over the lifetime of a typical vehicle. The new 2017 F-150 Raptor is due in showrooms in the fall of next year.

2016 Ram Heavy Duty to Have the Most Torque Ever Offered in a Mass-Production Vehicle

The 2016 model year Ram 2500 and Ram 3500 have been introduced by Ram, and with it, the company builds on a list of best-in-class

claims. Ram has worked with Cummins on developing a new, hardhitting fuel delivery and turbo boost calibration for the 6.7L I6 diesel engine that will produce an extra 35 lb-ft of torque, which raises the total torque figure to a whopping 900 lb-ft, which is the largest number ever achieved in a mass-produced vehicle. Additionally, the Ram 3500 brings the towing capacity up to an astounding 31,210 lbs from 30,000 lbs in 2015. In order to handle that extra capacity, Ram beefed up the rear axle ring gear hardware from 12 to 16 bolts on all trucks that have the 11.8-inch axle. In terms of payload available, Ram also claims top-of-the-class numbers of 7,390 lbs for a 6.4Lequipped Ram 2500. Finally, the 2016 Ram 2500 leads all ¾-ton pickups with 17,980 lbs of capacity.

Could the Import Killing Chicken Tax Finally be Repealed?

If you’re at all familiar with this publication, you are well aware of the fact that for the last 50 or so years, a chicken tax imposed in 1963 by United States President Lyndon B. Johnson placed a 25-percent tariff on potato starch, dextrin, brandy, and light trucks in response to tariffs placed by France and West Germany on the importation

of US chicken. This is a large part of the reason that non-domestic automakers barely have a foot in the door in terms of pickup trucks compared to other global markets, as making a profit on one with a 25-percent tariff is nearly impossible. According to an Autoblog report, two pending trade deals, the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, with countries in the Pacific Rim and Europe, could potentially be passed and would see the end of the charge. However, an Automotive News report

suggests that new pickups wouldn’t immediately flood the market, as they have gauged the intentions of several auto manufacturers in respect to pickup trucks and they weren’t all dying to get into this market.

STRONGER TOUGHER MORE DURABLE

Hennessey Performance out of Sealy, Texas is now offering its 2015-2016 VelociRaptor SUV, which is essentially a Ford F-250 Lariat pickup truck fitted with a ton of performance and aesthetic upgrades. Right off the bat, the VelociRaptor SUV conversion includes four doors, rear cargo doors, VelociRaptor front bumper upgrades, and Hennessey and VelociRaptor SUV exterior badges. Obviously, this wouldn’t be a true Hennessey modification without a huge power upgrade, and they do just that but offering

either a VelociRaptor 600 or 650 Supercharged upgrade that will greatly boost the stock 411 horsepower that comes with it. There also is the option of going with the 6.7L PowerStroke diesel engine option. FCA Foundation Teams with Canstruction to Build Special Vehicle

The iconic Jeep Wrangler is impressive enough on its own, but it’s even more so when made from 4,500 non-perishable food cans. The FCA Foundation, the company’s charitable arm, teamed up with non-profit organization Canstruction to have the special vehicle built — by local students aged 12 to 18 — in front of the Vancouver Convention Centre to celebrate Canada’s 148th birthday. People were able to sit inside, take pictures and share them on social media with the hashtag #JeepCANselfie. “It’s all going to get donated to Vancouver food banks,” says Jacob Porter, director of special events at Canstruction, adding the purpose is to raise hunger awareness and provide meals for the needy. Reid Bigland, president and CEO of FCA Canada, says the goal is to educate youth as well. “It also demonstrates to the students involved how critical, and fun, subjects like science, technology, engineering and math can be,” says Bigland. “This project also provides a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to a community that has helped drive FCA’s success in Canada.” This isn’t the first time FCA has worked with Canstruction, specializing in can design for charity. Last year a Ram pickup was put together for the Calgary Stampede, and the year before that they constructed a Dodge Grand Caravan in Toronto. To learn more visit www.canstruction.org

Mid-Size Contender

The Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of Chevrolet Canada

P

addle boards, kayaks, ATVs, mountain bikes and snowmobiles are just some of the toys that form part of an active outdoor lifestyle. And while each of these things is very different, they do all have one thing in common – you have to get them to where you’ll use them. Recently, Chevy used the mountains and rivers of British Columbia as a backdrop to show off exactly this attribute of its new mid-size truck,

the Colorado. This was a bit different to most truck programs, as trucks are often associated with work alone, but this time, each exercise in towing and hauling was about play only. The all-new 2015 Chevrolet Colorado has returned to the market as a completely new truck, one that gives buyers the option of buying a new mid-size truck, a segment that has been neglected in the truck market these past few years. In keeping with its new attitude (and that of many of its buyers) one of the Colorado’s standout features is its connectivity. The truck is available with Chevrolet MyLink, that connects with smart phones for hands-free operation. However, it goes one step further with a Siri 12 Trucks Plus

Eyes Free feature – offering text alerts and then reading the messages aloud. So that keeps your eyes on the road, but when parked, the GM OnStar network with 4G LTE offers a built-in W-Fi hotspot in the truck. Works with any device to within about 100 feet radius of the vehicle when running. Now you don’t have to wait till you get home to upload your latest spectacular fail to YouTube. But, this upload capability has another practical use; one that is currently offered by OnStar. Called OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics, it’s a monthly systems check (includes data from engine, transmission and anti-lock brakes) that is run automatically and the diagnostic results sent via email to your dealer. I’d assume that if there was a serious problem they’d call you; otherwise, a monthly history would be available to your service technician when the truck was next serviced. Colorado is available in extended cab and crew-cab four-door models with either a 2.5-litre four-cylinder or 3.6-litre V6 engine. With the larger motor making 305 hp, a max tow rating of 7,000 lb is realistic. I’ve personally towed my 29-foot four-place snowmobile trailer with this combination and it worked well – even without an equalizing hitch. These two next-gen engines are powerful and also more fuel efficient than those that came before them. For instance, the base 2.5 is rated at 8.8L/100 km highway, while the V6 only pushes that number up to 9.2L/100 km. Certain models are also available with a six-speed manual transmission (fewer and fewer trucks offer manuals these days), while all others use a six-speed automatic.

NEW WHEELS In B.C., towing was restricted to side-by-side ATVs, so weight was not a factor, but the steady pull of the engine on steep mountain grades was noted. In part, this was also a credit to the six-speed automatic that has a “learning” function. This feature takes into account the driver’s

typical accelerator inputs and the loads on the vehicle; in essence, the tranny thinks and smooths out the shifts. What also makes hauling and trailering easier is a standard auto grade braking function in the tranny, and a tow/haul mode. The full-size Silverado, which launched its latest generational update in 2014, has shared a number of clever innovations with the Colorado. Among these are body components like a fully boxed frame, coil-over front suspension with aluminum knuckles, electric power steering and four-wheel disc brakes with four-piston front calipers. It also inherits

What Colorado is also offering (and was showing off in the mountains) is the unique variety of cargo add-ons specifically designed to transport all the toys. But first, let’s look at the bed. Extended cab models come with a 6’2” bed while crew-cabs can be had with either a 5’2” bed or the 6’2-inch version. The longer design gives you an overall 8-foot length with

the tailgate down. Also found on this new bed are standard CornerStep rear bumpers, EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgates that lock (it also has a stronger design to allow for the weight of ATVs rear wheels resting on it during transport) and standard bed rail and tailgate protectors. Happily, a factory-applied spray-in bed liner can now be ordered. To hold toys in place, the Colorado offers 13 standard tie-down points, as well as an optional (movable) tie-down ring system. Called the GearOn system, a variety of accessories are available that fit the rails and are specific to a buyer’s needs. These accessories can often be seen in dealer showrooms, and when ordered, can be installed before vehicle delivery. They can even be included in the vehicle’s warranty if ordered that way. Driving different versions of the Colorado in B.C. also highlighted another Chevrolet attribute - variety. The Colorado is available in four trim levels, including the popular Z71 off-road package. WT, or work truck, is the base, and for many buyers is just enough – but if you want more, look at what’s offered (as an example) in

the Luxury Package that can be added to the LT trim package. It includes four-way power front passenger seat adjuster, power driver lumbar control, power front passenger lumbar control, heated driver and front passenger seats, automatic climate control, projector-type headlamps, auto-dimming inside rear-view mirror, heated outside mirrors with chrome finish, chrome rear bumper and door handles. In keeping with the evolution of the truck market, the new Colorado can be personalized with unique tires and wheels, and offers not only truck ruggedness, but as many electronic and comfort features as you feel you need. Editors Note: The 2016 edition of the Colorado remains largely unchanged other than a few new features and the addition of a 2.8L Duramax turbo diesel engine. Look for it in showrooms in the fall of this year. AUG / SEPT 2015 Trucks Plus 15

NEW WHEELS System that comes with the Technology Package (+ $3,000) works well enough, but the dial, which is responsible for many of the commands, is just not that intuitive to use. Other tech highlights include an SMS text messaging function that puts your texts on screen after you pair your smartphone, and an Active Noise Control function that counteracts road and other unwanted sounds by canceling them out using an opposing sound frequency sent via the audio speakers. The quiet cabin goes great with the silky smoothness of the 273-horsepower, 3.5-litre V6 engine. The drive experience is equally as enjoyable with the motion-adaptive electric power steering system, which alters the resistance of the steering feel depending on traction conditions, so the wheel doesn’t feel like it’s connected to nothing, as is the case on some contemporary setups.

Sporty SUV The 2016 Acura RDX

The smooth six-cylinder performance and standard all-wheel drive comes at a cost — fuel efficiency is lacklustre. The manufacturer claims a combined city/highway consumption figure of 10.6 L/100 km. Alas, I was not able to best 14.7 L/100 km during a week of driving in combined conditions. The good news is that the massaged mill now sports an innovation often found in pickup trucks: cylinder deactivation. Called Variable

ot off its best sales year to date, the 2015 Acura RDX proved to be popular with buyers looking for an affordable luxury crossover with the latest technology. For 2016, it receives a mid-model facelift that sees the addition of Acura’s funky-looking Jewel Eye LED headlights, some styling updates to both the exterior and interior, and a revised V6 engine. Launched three years ago, the RDX is now in its second generation and has morphed from a sporty small SUV to what Acura says is a “more formal look with a longer, sculpted hood and styling that is more elegant and sophisticated to match the Acura philosophy of timeless, beautiful design.” I was a fan of the previous model, but I understand

Cylinder Management by Acura, three of the cylinders are turned off under light load conditions to increase efficiency. As a bonus, the motor now makes six more horsepower and one more lb-ft of torque, bringing the totals to 279 and 252, respectively. Finally, an Elite Package has been added for the new model year, taking its place as the highest trim available, adding 18-inch alloy wheels with painted grey inserts, foglights, front and rear parking sensors, ventilated front seats and auto-dimming side mirrors. MSRP for 2016 increases $300 over the press vehicle I drove, to $41,990.

Worth a Long Look

The 2015 Land Rover Discovery Sport Story and photos by Russell Purcell

T

he all-new Land Rover Discovery Sport is set to bring a new surge of customers to the storied British nameplate, as this classylooking sport utility vehicle has loads of curb appeal and unmatched all-terrain capabilities. The Discovery Sport is set to replace the awkward-looking and slow-selling LR2 model which lacked the styling flair and creature comforts that consumers in this segment demand. The decision makers at Land Rover hope that the Discovery Sport is modern enough to help attract a more youthful buyer to the company’s showrooms, and broaden the customer base. What sets this vehicle apart from previous models is that it has been designed to meet the needs of the young, urban professional rather than the traditional tweed-wearing Land Rover buyer. The fact that it is offered at a lower price point should allow new customers to experience the company’s legendary quality and adventurous spirit without breaking the bank. While the Discovery Sport is an entry offering, one look at its luxurious interior and broad equipment list reveals that the product planners at Land Rover have worked hard to load it with enough content and amenities to raise the bar for this segment of the marketplace. There are three trim levels available - Discovery Sport SE, HSE, and HSE Luxury – and all will leave you with a new appreciation for the level of refinement, equipment and performance the company is packing into its current line-up. Land Rover vehicles follow a successful design formula that was established decades ago and has carefully evolved over time. As a result, the new Discovery is tall, long, and wide just like its forebears. Many wrongly assume that these styling elements are retained simply 18 Trucks Plus

as a nod to Land Rover’s more utilitarian past, but in reality, their inclusion allows for increased passenger room and a wider track. The latter bestows the Discovery Sport with exceptional stability which helps enhance driver confidence. With the price of gasoline still on an upward swing, the product planners at Land Rover knew that they had to make some changes to the powertrain in an effort to improve fuel efficiency. As a result, under the hood resides a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine which is mated to an ultra-efficient nine-speed automatic transmission. This tidy powerplant produces a respectable 240-horsepower and 250 pounds-feet of torque. This is more than sufficient to hustle the Discovery Sport to 100 km/h in a respectable 8.2 seconds. The very sophisticated transmission is quick to transition from gear to gear and has been engineered to make the most efficient use of the vehicle’s power resources. The Discovery Sport seems to have plenty of grunt available at most engine speeds, as maximum torque is achieved at a mere 1,750 rpm, and by using the steering wheel-mounted paddle shift controls, I was able to explore the vehicle’s capabilities with aplomb. This potent combination helped make short work of on-ramps, extended climbs, and gravel logging roads. Although the Discovery Sport has been carefully engineered so that it can tackle just about any off-road challenge you put before it, the reality is that it will spend the majority of its time navigating paved highways and city streets. As a result, the design team made sure to focus an equal amount of attention at optimizing this capable SUV’s dynamic handling and road worthiness. The Discovery Sport proved to be an excellent touring vehicle, as the steering, suspension and traction control systems work together to make you feel more connected to the road, without compromising off-road performance. Land Rover is a premium brand and as such, it markets luxury vehicles. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the Disco’s passenger compartment is well-insulated from wind, road and engine noise, and the suspension provides a smooth ride, predictable handling, and exceptional steering response. While not as dynamic as its Range Rover siblings, the Discovery Sport still provides a satisfying driving experience. Steering is

portion of my testing. For those owners looking to get the most out of the Discovery Sport off-road, I would suggest that they invest in a more aggressive all-terrain tire selection. I will admit, though, that

precise, but the tall centre of gravity and overall heft of the vehicle promotes enough body lean that you are unlikely to toss this vehicle into corners. The Discovery Sport comes equipped with Land Rover’s Terrain Response System, which is a well-sorted, and user friendly, full-

the all-season Continentals still managed to haul this hefty rig up all but the steepest grade during my off-road antics, and with only minor slippage. The rectangular shape of the Land Rover Discovery Sport helps maximize interior volume, and the spacious cabin offers seating for five or seven with the addition of optional seats. The second-row seating area allows for three adults to ride in relative comfort, and the cargo area is spacious enough for a weekend’s worth of gear.

time four-wheel drive system that allows the driver to select from four settings – General, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, and Sand – to custom tailor the vehicle’s operational set-up for different terrain conditions. At the push of a button, Terrain Response reconfigures the vehicle’s drive settings so you can take on any surface with confidence.

The quality of the leather seating, trim pieces and interior build materials used on the Discovery is top-notch, and the large windows and raised seating positions promote excellent visibility throughout the vehicle. All but the tallest individuals should be able to get comfortable in the two front seating positions. High-end comfort, safety and infotainment features include navigation, rain-sensing wipers, automatic Halogen headlamps, touchscreen controls, and dual-zone climate control among others.

I had the opportunity to take the Discovery Sport for a short off-road excursion to explore the vehicle’s climbing and descending abilities. In an effort to prevent you from dragging the tail or burying the nose, the vehicle has been designed with short overhangs front and rear. Add to this 212 mm (8.3 in.) of ground clearance, an approach angle of 25 degrees, and a departure angle of 31 degrees, and it is easy to recognize that this vehicle is ready for some serious climbing. Hill Descent Control is also on board to assist the driver when it comes time to make his or her way back down the mountain. My test unit rolled on 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with Continental all-season performance tires that excelled during the pavement

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is a vast improvement over the LR2 and marks a new level of refinement for the brand as well as a new direction in style. It has two distinct personalities that complement each other very well. It is a rough-and-tumble SUV perfectly suited for adventure, but on the other hand it cleans up nicely and looks classy enough to impress the valet at your favourite restaurant. It excels as a luxurious daily driver, but is equally proficient when the pavement comes to an end. The Discovery Sport is well worth a long look. 20 Trucks Plus

So, we won’t repeat what everybody knows anyway. What we will do is talk about aspects of the GC that make it comparable to any other higher-end SUV in its class. Our tester was the mid-line Overland model, and as such, was very well equipped for all but those who must have the last word in luxury, the Summit model. At $20K more expensive than the base Laredo, there ought to be many features, and there are. Air suspension, leather and wood in the interior, panoramic sunroof, Uconnect with navigation.....lots of comfort and convenience items that make the Overland a vehicle far beyond any utilitarian Jeep SUV image anyone might have. On the safety technology side, the basics – multiple air bags, antilock brakes - are accounted for in the $59K base price, but to get the

Advanced Brake Assist, Forward Collision Warning, Advanced Cruise Control with Stop, and Blind Spot and Cross Path Detection. Not on that list is Lane Departure Warning or Intervention. Under the hood, all Jeep Grand Cherokees (except SRT8) are equipped as standard with the familiar Pentastar 3.6-litre V6, and while it runs well and delivers decent fuel consumption, it is a smallish engine for a full-size SUV. Most folks will want more power, and here is where it gets interesting. You can get the 5.7-litre Hemi V8 with 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque, or the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6, a unit sourced from Fiat that delivers only 240 hp, but an impressive 420 lb-ft of torque. You no doubt noticed the headline on this page, and yes, this Grand Cherokee was equipped with the V6 oil-burner. To get this engine, you must pay $4,995, and you get an upgrade to the QuadraDrive II all-wheel drive system that includes a limited-slip rear axle, added to the 4WD low range, and several driver-selectable settings that match the system to the surface under the vehicle. Remaining unchanged is the eight-speed automatic transmission you find in all Grand Cherokees. Being great fans of modern diesels, especially in bigger vehicles that can really use the reduction in fuel consumption, it should come as no great surprise that we can totally recommend the diesel in the Grand Cherokee. Torque is King in a big vehicle, especially when driven off-

pavement, and this it has in abundance. It has excellent driveability, as all modern diesels do, and stellar fuel efficiency, too. The Transport Canada Energuide consumption ratings, under the newest five-cycle system, are 11.2L/100 km city, and 8.4L/100 km highway. Well, we managed to handily beat those numbers with only an average attempt at driving in an economical fashion, with 10.5L city indicated on the trip computer, and as low as the 7.5L range (37 mpg!) at a steady highway cruise. This is really stellar efficiency for such a big, capable vehicle, better than the gas V6 and wayyy better than the Hemi V8. Naturally, you should do your own calculations on distance driven per year, cost and benefit (there is a tool on the Jeep.ca website), but on the face of it, the EcoDiesel is the way to go, just as it is in the Ram pickup. It seems to us that if you are already plunking down nearly $60,000 on a big SUV, it makes sense to spend another $5K to get the fuel efficiency of a mid-size sedan, with no penalty in driveability or towing ability. You can pay more for a big, diesel SUV with a foreign prestige badge, but you won’t get a Jeep and its proven off-road capability. Throw in all the luxury and technology the Overland we drove had, and at its price point, it is hard to beat.

TRUCK GUY Handling: Adding truck suspension lift kits will undoubtedly raise the vehicle’s centre of gravity, resulting in less-stable turns. This is a common issue when installing lift kits, but is mostly just a matter of becoming accustomed to a vehicle’s change in performance. Legality: Some suspension lift kits are such a serious change in your suspension system that they may not be legal. Check the suspension regulations within your province to be sure. A Few Useful Accessories: Before installing a lift kit, it’s a good idea to first examine if any components will be affected by your vehicle’s new height. Here are a few useful accessories that may need to be upgraded:

Lift Kits 101

B r a k e U p g r a d e s : Stock brakes do not always accommodate larger tires, or will wear easily due to the added strain.

Drivetrain and Differential: Axles, gears, differential covers, lockers and more ensure that your drivetrain is up to par with your suspension.

P

urchasing a new or used truck is exciting. You can already see yourself personalizing it to suit your needs. Believe me when I tell you, the truck is the cheap part. Over the years, I have seen people spend upwards of $25,000 or more on customization. One of the more popular things to do these days is installing a suspension lift along with larger tires and wheels. Installing a suspension lift requires some hard work, along with some mechanical experience. If you’re going to tackle this yourself, here are a few things you should know.

Replacement Parts: Longer Control Arms and Track Bars to compensate for the additional height of your truck.

Installation: Many manufacturers offer manuals for installing lift kits onto certain vehicles; however, some installations are quite intricate, requiring some welding or cutting in order to add some necessary components. In this case, having a mechanic or a few knowledgeable friends around will help make the job go smoother.

Search the internet. There are many sites which offer complete instructions on various suspension lifts. You can download a copy before you make the purchase, and know exactly what is in involved.

Additional Modifications: Upgrading to taller tires also means that a number of components may require part upgrades or some tuning to compensate. For instance, a truck’s engine is tuned at specific gear ratios to propel the vehicle. When adding taller tires, the gear ratios must be changed accordingly, since the engine has to spin much larger, heavier tires. You will also be required to purchase a speedometer recalibration tool, so you have an accurate reading. Again, consult with more experienced individuals for further insight. Highway Driving: Larger, wider tires can sometimes result in instability on roads or a noisy, uncomfortable ride, particularly at high speeds. Also, more aggressive off-road tires tend to wear faster on the highway and traction might not be as great as you would expect on wet roads. Weight: Larger tires are heavier, which can put a lot of strain on your suspension, particularly if it is a stock suspension. Trusted, durable suspension components and lighter aluminum wheels can sometimes help to reduce the strain. 26 Trucks Plus

AUG / SEPT 2015

Shocks: For those taller lifts, longer shocks will ensure the smoothest performance both on and off road. Other Parts: Steering linkage, slip yoke, drive shaft length, ujoint angle, and brake lines are all worthy of consideration before installing suspension lift kits.

PERFORMANCE TIRE GUIDE quite meet all of your expectations, then you can’t expect your vehicle to perform the way you want it to, and for the purpose you want it for. The same way that no vehicle or driver is created equal, no tire is created equal either. They’ve all got different strengths and weaknesses, and each tire out there is geared toward a specific purpose, specific vehicle, and specific driver. The key is finding the one that fits you, your vehicle, and your purpose. It’s at that point when you’ll experience the true meaning of “performance.”

2015 Peformance Tire Guide Story by Arch Linsao, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

T

his is one of those concepts that seems like it should be pretty obvious. The concept behind the popular phrase “bringing a knife to a gunfight.” Basically describing the idea of having the proper equipment for the task at hand. Obvious, right? Well, not always when it comes to choosing tires, apparently. Let’s face it, people... just because it’s black and round, or costs a certain amount, or is made by a particular company in a particular part of the world, doesn’t always make it the proper tire to put on your vehicle. Every tire has a particular purpose, every vehicle has a particular purpose, and every driver has a particular purpose. Now when you take each of those factors into consideration, you can easily narrow down the multitude of choices out there and pick the proper tire for your particular purpose. If you decide to ignore one of those factors and you choose a tire that doesn’t

Now if that still doesn’t quite make a whole lot of sense (I’ve been told that sometimes I don’t), let’s take a look at the same concept but in a world that has nothing to do with cars or tires. We are all Canadian, and thus we all love hockey, right? So let me put it in a way all of us hockey fans will understand. It’s obvious that hockey players are excellent ice skaters. Honestly, they’re some of the best skaters out there, if you take into consideration all the athletic manoeuvres they’re able to execute whilst wearing what are essentially just boots with a metal blade attached to them gliding on a sheet of ice. Now imagine the same hockey players going about their business, but wearing skates designed for figure skaters. They’re still ice skates, right? Still just boots with metal blades gliding on the ice, right? It should be no different, right? WRONG. It’s the same thing as trying to tee off on the golf course with a putter, win a boxing match with baseball gloves, dribble a football on a basketball court, or throw a touchdown with a soccer ball. I mean, you could probably try it but you likely won’t get the desired results. Why? Because you’re not using the right equipment. I could go on and on with the analogies, but I figure at this point (at least I’d hope) you’ve been able to connect the dots and see where I’m going with this idea. The same concept applies when talking tires. Your vehicle will probably still work fine even with the wrong type of tire on it, but it won’t get you the desired or optimal results. It’s like putting an ultra-high-performance race tire on a minivan, a long-lasting eco-friendly touring tire on a supercar, or a super-aggressive competition rock crawler tire on a truck that would never leave the pavement. Sure, they’ll work, but they won’t “perform.” Performance is all about having the right equipment. The last thing you’d want to do is show up to a gunfight with a knife. Or a hockey stick. Or boxing gloves. Or... okay fine I’ll stop. You get the point.

he Mexican desert racers’ domination in the Score International Off-Road Racing series continued at The Baja 500. In one of the closest finishes in history, Mexico’s Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez took the win in The 47th Annual Bud Light Score International Baja 500 just 50 seconds ahead of Las Vegas off-road legend Rob MacCachren. American racers in trophy truck class have yet to win a race this season in the Score series. The win for Lopez puts him atop the points lead for the season following a 2nd place finish in the Bud Light Score Int San Felipe 250 and a 4th in the first ever Bud Light Score Baja Sur 500 earlier this year. “This is the first 500 mile race that I have driven solo. The toughest part was the endurance,” said Lopez. Fellow countryman Gustavo Vildosola, with his Red Bull team, started in 8th position and moved up throughout the race. He crossed the finish line in 3rd place but was moved back to 4th

Alpine’s New Restyle System

Story by Dave MacKinnon, photos by Alpine

W

hy do we go to the movie theatre to watch the latest releases? Is it the artery-clogging soggy popcorn? The sticky floors? The people sitting behind us commenting on each scene? Nope, it’s the screen size and the sound. Up until a few years ago, we had nearly unlimited options for great sound in our vehicles, but were stuck with a 7-inch screen in our dash. Alpine has changed all that with the new Restyle system. If you don’t know Alpine, then it’s entirely possible you have been living under a rock. Alpine has been producing amazing mobile vehicle entertainment products for decades – everything from amplifiers, speakers, source units and video products – and all are unique and perform well. The Restyle product line is based around two multimedia source units – the X009-U with its massive 9-inch LCD display, and the X008U that features an 8-inch display. An inch may not seem like a big difference, but remember, that’s the diagonal measurement from corner to corner, so in terms of surface area, it is quite significant. The Restyle system is a package specifically designed for different trucks. Given that more than half the vehicles on the road are trucks, and you ARE reading Trucks Plus, this makes complete sense. The Restyle package includes either the X009-U or X008-U head unit, a new dash bezel with integrated vehicle controls, and supporting hardware to retain communication with different functions of your vehicle. More specifically, Alpine has partnered with iDatalink to include a preprogrammed Maestro RR vehicle interface with each Restyle kit. These interfaces allow information like Tire Pressure, Battery Voltage, Door Status (open or closed) and a selection of vehicle gauges like tachometer and speedometer to be displayed on the head unit. Maestro products have indeed revolutionized vehicle integration. 42 Trucks Plus

The X009-U and X008-U head units are equally amazing in their features and performance. These source units feature stateof-the-art 3D turn-by-turn navigation including Text-To-Speech prompts and live traffic information, and they include maps of Canada, the US, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Premium Bluetooth hands-free calling and audio streaming including phone book access with voice command support is also included. HD Radio and Pandora (for our U.S. friends), AM/FM, iPod and iPhone support include album art display. There is a DVD slot behind the folding display panel, of course,

and with Dual Zone control included, the driver can listen to the radio or an iPod while the rear seat passengers (likely kids) can watch a DVD through a secondary rear-mounted display and accompanying headphones – a perfect solution for family vacations. Each source unit includes an HDMI input on the rear, so you can connect a game system or your smart phone to provide even more entertainment options. Restyle is all about integration, and truly, that is the future of our industry. The products fit into the dash perfectly and op-

The Importance of Trailer Brakes

Story by Howard J Elmer

I

t’s nearing the end of the summer season and for some RVers, that means prepping the trailer for storage. Mind you, for others, that means getting the trailer ready for more on-road adventures down south this winter. Whichever category your unit falls into, I’d like you to spend a few minutes thinking about an often overlooked system on your trailer – the brakes.

It’s this electric pulse that comes from the trailer brake controller found in the tow vehicle. This system does the obvious – syncs up the trailer and truck brakes, because you want those to work together. But it does so much more. In-cab readouts will show owners how much braking force is being applied to the trailer so they can change it to account for a loaded or empty condition. Even weather can play into how much brake force the trailer should exert.

Most owners are aware that their trailer has brakes - AND - that’s about as far as most owners’ thoughts go when asked about them. But, when were they serviced last? Most will say never. When asked how often they should be serviced, most wouldn’t know. This is simply human nature. Trailers are often not used for months at a time - a good reason to keep brakes in good order - yet it’s also the reason that most owners forget to do it. Few, if any, owners will service their own brakes, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a basic knowledge of the system on your unit. With this knowledge comes the awareness that will remind you to regularly get those brakes serviced. Here are the basics everyone should know – and just a bit more. The majority of trailer brakes are of the older style “drum” variety. The key difference between these and those found on most cars/trucks is that the actuator (the arm that presses the brake pads against the inside of the drum) is electrically rather than hydraulically activated. 48 Trucks Plus

Brake pads on trailers often don’t need replacement for many years (depending on usage) but because of the amount of time most trailers sit idle, corrosion, binding, seizing and wire deterioration are the true enemies of your brakes. At the very least, trailer brakes should be inspected annually. Their key need is cleaning and lubrication – jobs most owners can easily do. Apart from the obvious need to stop the trailer, these brakes also play a much larger role in the overall safe operation of a travelling truck-andtrailer combination. For instance, the use of Tow/Haul mode found in many of today’s trucks. Tow/Haul is fully integrated with a truck’s computer, which modifies the transmission’s shift mapping on the fly. With Tow/Haul engaged, the computer “knows” that the truck is towing, how much weight it’s

pulling, and takes the driver’s accelerator inputs into consideration as it adjusts the shift points to pull more engine power for starts, hills and merging. But this is not its only function; when slowing, the transmission downshifts are made at higher rpms, promoting engine braking. This reduces wear on the trailer brakes and offers better downhill control. Any trucker will tell you it’s all about controlling the load, and that’s what the computer is programmed to do; however, many drivers still feel the need to make the decisions, so most trucks will allow manual downshifting. Either way, this too is a safe driving habit that has everything to do with saving trailer brakes.

Watch how it works!

Why bother, you may ask? Research has shown that using the transmission’s gearing to hold the load on grades can reduce brake rotor temperatures by 100 C during a braking event. Cooler brakes – both sets (truck and trailer) – means sharper stopping when the need really arises, not to mention lowering maintenance costs. So where else do trailer brakes impact driving safety? One of the biggest advances in trailer towing safety in the last decade is trailer sway control. As the name implies, the truck (working with the trailer brakes) can bring a swaying trailer back under control automatically. GM’s Trailer Sway Control

The key element to this system is the controller which provides a two-way flow of information to the truck’s computer that activates the system. For example, GM’s new Silverado uses the data fed to its Trailer Sway Control to also assist its truck’s standard StabiliTrak system. Together, they will combat a potentially life threatening situation – often before the driver even realizes it.

When the computer senses trailer sway, it brakes the truck (and the electric trailer brakes) as needed (sometimes only one side) or cuts engine power and downshifts to bring the trailer under control. And, that’s the best reason to make sure your trailer’s brakes are serviced regularly. So, as autumn comes on, consider your end-of-season (or beginning of snowbird season) maintenance and make sure the trailer brakes are on the list for inspection at your dealer. Last word – and this one’s for the benefit of dealers – often RVers leave this list of trailer maintenance must-dos till spring. Why not get it out of the way this fall when your dealer is less busy? They’ll appreciate it and come spring, you’ll be ready to go as soon as the weather breaks.

RV-ING

Keystone Retreat 39BHTS

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

T

he Keystone Retreat is called a travel trailer by the company; and while it can certainly be towed down the road, chances are that someone who buys this unit will park it exactly once. So, doesn’t that make it a “Park Model”? “No,” says Erroll Knight, sales manager at Camping In Style. “Park models are typically 12-feet wide and can only be moved by special trucks when being set up,” said Knight. “They are also much more expensive.”

retirement full-timing. However, for some, there will come a time to get off the road – but not out of camping entirely. This, then, is the new niche. Frankly, I shouldn’t be surprised; the RV market continues to offer new products to market niches that are becoming more and more refined. And, that’s my first impression of the Retreat. It’s a 40-foot-long, twobedroom, large living room unit with three slide-outs (which each give

So, while this definition clearly defines a Park Model, I’m still here reviewing a travel trailer that, well, doesn’t really travel. However, after having talked with Knight, I came away with a different take on the Retreat and the people who buy it. Knight says that a new class of buyer has been growing in recent years – call them permanent campers. These are RVers who want to get off the road, but still want to get away to the trailer – a large trailer, akin to a vacation home – however at a substantial price discount from any twelve-wide Park Model. I mention the Canadian MSRP of the Retreat here ($50,426 as equipped) because, according to Knight, that price is what makes the idea of a parked travel trailer attractive and more affordable than a Park Model. Well, that’s for readers to decide; but I do get that (as with most things in life) there is a right time for everything. Camping throughout one’s life goes through phases, usually starting with smaller units, moving to larger ones and often back to small. As for travel companions, you often start as a couple, then add kids and family, then start shedding them as they start their own lives. At each stage, the type of camping you’ll do will change too. You’ll go through the “all about family years,” the far-afield exploring years, and often 52 Trucks Plus

you almost that 12-foot living space without being permanent) that has a main entrance and a double sliding patio door that begs to have a deck added to it - AND, stay parked. Everything about the Retreat says “vacation home” except the price. It’s all much clearer to me now. So, with this type of RVer in mind, I started my tour of the Retreat.

RV-ING AM/FM/CD/DVD stereo. This stereo drives two outside speakers just above the patio doors. If you added an optional 21-foot electric patio awning you could create a large outdoor living space. Other outdoor touches include exterior soffit-mounted lights and 110V plugs. The kitchen in the Retreat is of residential proportions as are some of the appliances like the 18 cubic-foot refrigerator. Built in an L-shape across the front of the trailer, the ample counter surrounds the large double sink with high-rise faucet and pull out sprayer. There is lots of counter space here and a wall of windows for light above it. For dining, the Retreat offers a freestanding four seat dining table – which can be moved as need be. The cooking range has three burners and an oven as well as a microwave with carousel above it (with exhaust fan). Speaking of residential touches, the trailer boasts a 50AMP service, 16-gallon gas/electric water heater and a rough-in for a second AC unit. All things you’ll appreciate when visitors are swarming in/out and through your vacation home (like the outside shower too).

The main entrance on the Retreat is midway down the trailer, opening into the bedroom hallway almost across from the bathroom. This design lets those needing to make a pit stop enter directly and not walk the length of the unit. Of course, once that deck is added, the sliding patio doors (with sliding screen) will probably become the main in/out portal. This, however, works for the other traffic pattern – kitchen to outdoor dining. The patio doors are also ideally located directly across from the couch, affording the best outdoor view possible. My unit, with Silver Birch decor, featured an electric fireplace directly below a swivelling flat-screen LCD TV just to the right of the couch. This floor-to-ceiling cabinet also has glass-door storage and a built-in

A feature of the Retreat that is not immediately apparent is its interior height. I noticed it after several minutes – it’s really tall inside. At eightfeet high throughout, it feels really airy as well as bright because of the added window height. In the main salon, you still have plenty of cupboard storage on the walls, but the windows can be (and are) larger because of the increased wall space. In particular, in the bathroom, where showers normally have skylights only, the Retreat is able to offer a full wall window above the shower-stall. The master bedroom is located at the opposite end of the trailer and is a large room with great windows across the rear of the trailer. The bed is a pillow-top King mattress which lifts to reveal mega-storage. This location has a hard door to the hallways as well as a sliding door into the bathroom, creating an ensuite. The third slideout here moves the

Sorry, I meant suggest they retire to this room.) Two or three can sleep comfortably in here. And, if for some reason, you have even more guests, the living room sofa also doubles as night time accommodation. The Retreat is a three-season trailer, however the company does offer optional dual pan windows which hints at other possibilities. The mechanicals in the trailer include 42,000 BTU furnace, 15,000BTU AC unit, and central vacuum system. AC is diffused through the ceiling while heat is pumped through metal floor registers. A unique feature of the Retreat is a detachable hitch. Makes sense. Lastly, I didn’t tow this trailer – frankly, that is not what it’s about.

The dresser top is also a wide counter below another large screened window. The high ceiling here also offers a nice ceiling fan that you don’t have to duck under. Of course, a second TV here, night tables and great ventilation make this a nice relaxing space – not just for snoring! Floor coverings are of the durable vinyl type where needed and carpet where you’d expect it. A nice feature of the unit is the lighting. The tall ceilings allow all the 12V lighting to be flush in the roof, while in key spots, the Retreat has nice fixtures including dining room chandelier. The second bedroom is on the other side of the bathroom creating not only a noise barrier but making the trek to the washroom the same distance from either sleeping chamber. However, this second bedroom can do double duty. The main bed is a pull-out sofa below a
