adillac has proudly introduced the latest generation of its flagship SUV the Escalade, set to be released for the 2015 model year. The design of the SUV is entirely new, but still features the same look that has made the Escalade one of the more popular luxury SUV options available today. Much of the focus of the redesign was to greatly improve the interior, with many of the latest luxury and technology options being added. It will be available in both 2WD and 4WD drivetrains and under the hood you’ll find a 6.2L V8 engine that will be more powerful, yet also more efficient, than previous versions. Inside, you’ll find Cadillac’s CUE entertainment system and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster that can be reconfigured with four themes, plus the ride will be much quieter than previous generations thanks to the Bose Active Noise Cancellation technology and a stronger new body structure. Production of the vehicle will begin next spring, and the product line will consist of the standard Escalade model as well as an ESV edition that offers a 14-inch longer wheelbase and adds about 20 inches to the overall length making room for a third row of seats, along with tons more cargo room.

More Details Emerge About New Cummins V8 Engine

Last issue, we told you about a brand new 5.0L V8 Cummins turbo diesel engine that will be an option for the next generation Nissan Titan. Now, more details about the engine, called the ISV5.0, have emerged and Cummins hopes it will be a big hit for pickups, light and medium-duty commercial trucks, and even vehicles like smaller motorhomes. The engine was designed to be around the same size as comparable V8 or V10 gasoline options and aims to offer maximum durability in a lightweight package. The latest Bosch High Pressure Common Rail (HPCR) fuel system paired with piezo fuel injectors allow precise fuel control which leads to better fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. This along with Cummins’ Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT) allow the engine to put up impressive torque and horsepower numbers with 560 lb-ft being the peak torque, and horsepower ranging anywhere from 200-275. Production of the ISV5.0 is said to begin in the fourth quarter of 2014.

All New Jeep Cherokee Named IIHS Top Safety Pick The brand new 2014 Jeep Cherokee has been named a 2013 Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). Testing for this award simulates a side impact with a large SUV or truck, front moderate overlap impact, roof-crush that is consistent with a rollover, and a rear collision that is capable of inducing whiplash. In

FRESH TRACKS each category, the Jeep Cherokee received a “good” rating, which is the highest possible. The all-new Cherokee showcases more than 70 available safety and security features, many of which are designed to keep the passengers safe in the event of a collision. In total, there are ten standard airbags that includes locations such as all-row fulllength side-curtain air bags, drivers side and front passenger knee air bags, and front and rear seat-mounted pelvic thorax bags, just to name a few. Other features that have allowed the Cherokee to become a top safety pick are front and rear crumple zones, a safety cage body structure, reactive head restraints, and an energy absorbing steering column.

Jeep Unveils Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition

The first civilian Jeep (CJ) that was released to the public in the year 1945 was known as the Willys-Overland CJ-2A and had goanywhere capability and functional amenities. Now, for the 2014 model year, Jeep is releasing a special edition Jeep Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition that will showcase the original Jeep’s rugged and strictly functional capability. The special edition will be based on the Wrangler Sport model and will feature upgrades such as a Dana 44 rear axle with Trac-Lok limited slip rear differential and 3.73 gears, BG Goodrich KM Mud Terrain LT255/75R17 tires, rock rails, and a Jeep Trail Rated Kit that comes with a D-Ring and tow strap in a Jeep bag. On the exterior side of things, the Willys Jeep will have a gloss black grille with a black Jeep badge, a 4 Wheel Drive rear tailgate decal and Willys hood decals with some unique gloss black 17-inch aluminum wheels. Under the hood you’ll find the popular 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine that makes 285 horsepower.

lineup at the State Fair of Texas, the highlights of which include a second-generation 6.7L Power Stroke turbo diesel engine, increased towing capabilities and a refreshed Texas-inspired King Ranch model. Ford designs and builds its own diesel engine and transmission combination, which allows them to ensure it works seamlessly with the truck itself, and to further improve the engine whenever they choose. One major improvement of the Power Stroke engine is the addition of a larger GT37 turbocharger that replaces the GT32 model, and will push the power output above the current 400 horsepower and 800 lb-ft of torque. This extra power, along with many other upgrades such as fuel system improvements, piston assembly upgrades, and a new five-layer head gasket just to name a few, allows the new Super Duty to produce better towing capacity numbers.

FRESH TRACKS Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

Fiat Group Purchases Remainder of Diesel Maker VM Motori According to a report from Automotive News, Fiat Group, the parent company of the Chrysler Group, has purchased the remaining 50 percent of the diesel engine maker VM Motori from General Motors for a whopping $47.1 million. Fiat originally purchased half of the Italian diesel engine maker back in 2010 and has since put the VM Motorimade 3.0L V6 turbodiesel engines (called EcoDiesel) into the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee that is currently on sale and the 2014 Ram 1500 that is due to hit showrooms early in 2014. The same report stated that Chrysler will gauge how the turbodiesel engines catch on here in North America, before making any decisions regarding if they will bring more diesel-powered options into its lineup. VM Motori was founded back in 1947 in Centro, Italy, employs approximately 1,150 people, and produces roughly 90,000 diesel engines per year.

FRESH TRACKS Next Generation Ford Edge Concept Nissan Rogue’s Redesign Revealed at LA Auto Show Sees a Third Row Added While there’s no word on when we’ll be able to see the production version, Ford proudly revealed its latest Edge Concept design at the 2013 L.A. Auto Show. The all-new utility vehicle showcases a number of new automated driving technologies highlighted by pushbutton and remote-operated parking features that can be used when either inside or outside the vehicle. Other impressive technology features that are included in the concept vehicle are adaptive steering which makes steering at low speeds dramatically easier, active park assist, lane-keeping system, adaptive cruise control, and a blind spot information system that uses radar sensor in the rear corners that monitor the space next to and just behind the vehicle. On the outside, the Edge boasts a sleek and sporty appearance, while the inside includes many premium interior elements such as a ten-inch touch screen with MyFord Touch, a unique gear shifter, and a hand-stitched instrument panel.

The Nissan Rogue was first introduced in the 2008 model year and since then, it has made quite the name for itself in the ever-competitive compact SUV segment. Now, for the 2014 model year, the Rogue has been given a complete redesign and now features bold new styling and the option of having a third row of seats. The Rogue was able to make room for a third row thanks to improved interior packaging efficiency and the innovative EZ Flex seating system.

Another great feature you’ll find inside is the Divide n Hide Cargo system that provides 18 different variations between the cargo and passenger areas. On the outside, the Rogue’s new look can be attributed to sharp body lines that offer a sporty appearance and an aggressive stance thanks to large wheel wells and available 18-inch wheels. Halogen headlights with LED daytime running lights are standard, as well as body colour outside mirrors with turn signals and a rear spoiler.

014 is going to be a big year for Ram; the work they have been doing for at least the past five years is all coming together now. Their technology, design work and willingness to take chances are crystallizing in a truck, a unique pickup truck, an event that comes along maybe once in a decade. That’s this year’s winner. The overall points winner of the Canadian Truck King Challenge is the 2014 Ram 1500 powered by the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel with 8-speed transmission. This is a revolutionary setup, one that is going to be copied very quickly, but past this, it deserves credit right now. It takes guts to be the first and this small diesel from Ram works very, very well. In our under $45K category, the 2014 Ram 1500 powered by the 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 with the 8-speed transmission took first. It speaks to the other holy grail of truck ownership – power and capability with decent fuel economy. There was a time when this was simply impossible, remember? Not anymore. In large part, this is due to the 8-speed gearbox – again a revolutionary step forward. In the HD category, it was the 2500-series Ram equipped with the 6.7-litre Cummins diesel that won out. This year, the whole chassis was upgraded and strengthened, and the engine tuned up. It also now uses the DEF fluid for clean combustion. A hat-trick for Ram. But, it has to be noted (and the tale is in the numbers of each individual tested truck) that all the scores were close – so very close. That means that we, as truck buyers, are lucky. The fierce competition among the builders has produced a fleet 12 Trucks Plus

of iron where no truck is bad. In fact, they are all good, and the ones that are better are better by small increments, not by leaps and bounds. And that’s where it gets tough when judging these trucks. As in any contest, there has to be a first and a last, even if the difference between them is measured in the smallest of increments. What we do each year in September is no different from what you do every day of the year – and that’s the point. So, the rain, mud and cold are a vital part of testing; my judges and I have to feel what you feel, contend with what you contend with and ultimately appreciate what you appreciate, and judge each feature all the way.

As in years past, we tested at my IronWood site in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario. We use a public 19-kilometre test loop that consists of a hilly gravel road, broken twisting asphalt and a smooth highway section. We take trucks out in groups of five and drive them round and round, switching drivers on each circuit until all five judges have driven all five vehicles. The trucks are always used in the same condition, as in all empty, all towing or all with payload. And while 19 kilometres doesn’t sound like much, by the time we were finished, collectively, we drove over 4,000 kilometres. And, yes we do take each truck off-road. The HD trucks were tested outside London, Ontario; these trucks are used differently, so we test them differently. HD owners tow, a lot, and that’s what we do. Each truck was

Long Live Cherokee

The all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

O

ff-roading in California is nothing like what we do in Canada. For one thing, the dirt is really dry and the rocks are small and round, but the thing about a Jeep program (wherever it is held) is that the staff never shies away from the nasty trails. For the re-introduction of the storied Cherokee nameplate, Jeep followed its time-tested demo model - twisting pavement and a few hours of playing in the dirt. It does both equally well and that’s why after 70 years owners continue to love their Jeeps. Here in California I drove this first-generation body style, all the while thinking just how very different it was. First, it isn’t a Liberty, and second, it’s not a metal box. Now, the original Cherokee and, to a great extent, the Grand Cherokee, are the models that pushed the Jeep brand into the mainstream in the ‘80s with space and, above all, luxury. A good place to be, but the company’s quest to push the Jeep more into the middle of that stream has caused it now to load it down with a ton of standard equipment – at the low-end of the price range. The new swift-looking body and the standard features are a good start but Jeep goes two steps further. It also offers two new engines and a first-ever nine-speed automatic transmission. The two engines are the 3.2-litre V6 Pentastar (the first use of the scaled down Pentastar 3.6 V6) and a 2.4-litre MultiAir inline four. Both these motors hit the high notes of ample power and very, very decent fuel economy. For Canadians, who buy over 200,000 midsized SUVs each year, this is all good news. In fact, the two top reasons we buy Jeeps is 4x4 capability and the perceived value and fuel economy of the brand. Well this year, it’s more than “perceived.” And, you’ll be able to get into a Cherokee starting at just north of $24,000. But this is the “smaller” Jeep, right? That’s the other surprise – it’s got plenty of room for hockey gear, three forwards and a goalie. It 22 Trucks Plus

So, while I wanted to drive a Trailhawk during the off-road portion of our test drive, I chose instead to drive the same Cherokee that I’d cruised around Mulholland Drive with, built with the base 4x4 system (Jeep offers three 4WD systems). The baked California hillsides were dry, but steep, and the dirt was loose. This low-end Cherokee hooked up and crawled through every gully easily. For 2014, the 16-valve, 2.4-litre four (known as the Tigershark MultiAir 2) will make 184 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque as the base power plant. The “multiair” tag refers to an electro-hydraulic variable valve system that uses a column of oil as “lifters.” This idea – linking the camshaft and the intake valves – means an infinite number of variables are possible. The result? Well, the most important one is the increase in fuel economy – a 45-percent improvement over the outgoing model. The optional V6 is all-new as well. The DOHC 3.2-litre V6 joins the Chrysler Pentastar family as the second engine in the Cherokee. This motor will make 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque. Its design mimics that of the larger 3.6 V6 that has been named a Ward’s Top Ten engine three years running. What the smaller displacement does, though, is increase the fuel economy for this smaller, lighterplatform Jeep. New look, great interiors, packed with features and 4x4 – that’s the new Cherokee. Goodbye Liberty – long live Cherokee. These Jeeps are on dealer lots now.

Four-Wheeling in the New Land Rovers

Story and photos by Gerry Frechette

T

here are lots of worthy off-road vehicles from which to choose these days, but very few with the heritage and capability of Land Rover. One can picture the original post-war aluminum-bodied four-wheel drive utility vehicles from Solihull, England, and the original concept and design lasted for decades in the form of the Defender, until the need for more safety and modern technology overtook it. Meanwhile, Land Rover, realizing that the old-style model was never going to be appealing to the luxury buyer, introduced the Range Rover in 1970, and launched the fourth generation of the Queen’s favourite estate vehicle last year. Now, in 2013, the company, while expanding its product line with smaller vehicles, has kept the tradition of the brand intact, with the LR4 carrying on what the original model started, and the Range Rover starting a new chapter of prestigious capability. For the 2014 model year, Land Rover has taken a direction that is common these days, replacing the 5.0-litre V8 that was standard in both models with a supercharged 3.0-litre V6, yielding comparable performance with better fuel economy and lighter weight. The engine generates 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft torque. The V8, in supercharged form, continues in the Range Rover, and both engines are now backed by a new 8-speed transmission, replacing the previous 6-speed. Intelligent StopStart is also now part of the plan, and drivers should notice a worthwhile improvement in fuel efficiency. The changes to the drivetrain don’t stop there, as a new, lighter, single-speed Torsen® transfer case 4WD system is now stan26 Trucks Plus

dard on LR4, and the familiar two-speed transfer case 4WD system with Terrain Response is part of an optional Heavy Duty Package. The Range Rover continues with its full-time 4WD system. There are many more changes and improvements on both models, from audio systems to active safety features to styling changes, far more than we have room to describe here, but we can say that we drove the LR4 and Range Rover recently, and didn’t see a paved road between them.

It was perhaps fitting that our drive in Land Rover’s latest “traditional” models were in the environment that they are most associated with, and that is off-road, showing off their exceptional capabilities. On a special course set up for Land Rover’s national demonstration tour in Mission, B.C., we were able to get re-acquainted with all the technology that allows these big SUVs to negotiate obstacles that few other vehicles could.

Power Boost The 2014 Mazda CX-5 gets a much needed engine upgrade

Story by Jordan Allan, photos courtesy of Mazda Canada

T

here is definitely no shortage when it comes to compact SUVs in today’s market, so making a vehicle that stands out from the crowd is obviously a big part of being successful in this segment. Enter the Mazda CX-5, which was the first Mazda to showcase its new design theme, KODO – Soul of Motion. This theme offers a bold new look that most certainly helped the CX-5 enjoy a successful first year. Now entering its second year on the market, the CX-5 remains relatively unchanged for 2014 except for a much-needed engine upgrade and the Smart City Brake Support System. When you look at some of the other comparable SUVs, there is just something about the Mazda that makes it stand out. With the new design theme, they’ve (thankfully) dropped the smiling front end for a much more purposeful looking one; add that to an aggressive looking stance from the rear and you’ve got a definitely welcomed edgier look. Also adding to that edge is some very sleek body lines that seem to flow nicely and are reminiscent of a sedan rather than the often small and boxy look of some other compact SUVs. Inside the CX-5, you’ll find enough room to sit five adults, although you may not want to find yourself in the middle of the back seat for an extended period of time, but that can be said for most vehicles. The front seats had more than enough room for my 6’4” frame to find a comfortable driving position, and I found it to be a quiet ride with not a lot of road or engine noise entering the cabin. All controls are well laid-out and have a high-quality feel not often found in this segment. Our GT AWD test model featured 28 Trucks Plus

a leather interior with a nine-speaker premium Bose audio system controlled by a 5.8-inch colour touchscreen that also featured a TomTom navigation system. During the CX-5’s first year on the market, one of the only gripes that people seemed to have was the lack of power generated by the 2.0-litre SKYACTIV engine. In what will be a very well-received move, Mazda decided to make a new SKYACTIV-G 2.5-litre engine standard in all but the base GX trim. This change sees the horsepower jump from 155 to 184 and torque go from 150 lb-ft to 185 lb-ft which is a pretty substantial gain. Having driven both the 2.0-litre version of the CX-5 as well as the 2.5, I can tell you that there is definitely a noticeable difference, as the new engine gives you the passing power that was lacking, and adds some much needed fun when you’re behind the wheel. Fuel economy has hardly been sacrificed, with the new engine posting impressive fuel consumption numbers of 8.5L/100 km in the city and 6.6L/100 km on the highway, which is only slightly more than the base offering.

When driving the new CX-5, you definitely get the feel of driving a small car rather than driving an SUV, thanks in part to the McPherson strut front suspension that seems very precise when taking any corner. Also, partially because of the power upgrade, the CX-5 feels a lot more quick and agile when compared to some of its competitors. We tested our GT AWD model in the midst of a surprisingly sunny October, so we didn’t get to test the AWD system too much, but come December and January it will be a great asset when we have some snow on the ground. Also featured on the CX-5 are a number of impressive safety features, especially for a car of its ilk, such as blind spot monitoring (BSM) and the aforementioned Smart City Brake Support system which helps the driver avoid frontal collision when driving at low speeds in the city, or in slow traffic. Mazda deserves a lot of praise for realizing a bigger, more powerful engine was needed and immediately making the change, as that took care of one of the only real issues we had with the

vehicle. After spending some time with the CX-5, it’s easy to see how the combination of fuel efficiency, versatility, and performance make this one of the better options in this segment. Add that to the fact that it is one of the better looking choices out there and you have an SUV that surely will enter any conversation of those looking to purchase such a vehicle.

Game Changer

The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Ram Canada

T

his fall, the pickup world has been rocked with the introduction of a light-duty diesel engine in the Ram 1500 pickup. For Ram, this marketing move beats its competitors to the punch, so to speak (despite there being some small diesels in small trucks back in the ‘80s we’d rather forget about). As far as the pickup truck buyers of today are concerned, this is a first, one that was overdue and should take off like a Saturn 5 rocket. Rest assured, the other Detroit builders will follow suit. Reid Bigland, president of the Ram brand (among other titles) hopes for a ten percent take rate on new 2014 trucks; I think it will be closer to 20 percent, if they can build the engines fast enough. So, while the new Ram’s 3.0-litre turbo-EcoDiesel will be sourced from Europe, the field that this engine will be planted in was plowed by Cummins. It’s important to note that Ram and Cummins have been partnering for over 25 years now and the benefits of this relationship have been denied to half-ton buyers, but not anymore. This market shifting move is built around an Italian motor, built by a company that is now wholly owned by Fiat/Chrysler. This 3.0-litre engine features 24 valves and double-overhead cams in a turbocharged 60-degree V6 block that will make 240 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and torque of 420 lb-ft at 2,000 rpm. It will be available first in the Grand Cherokee and in the truck shortly after – late this year. The new turbo diesel is designed and produced by VM Motori, a Chrysler engine supplier since 1992. A note of interest here. Like many others, I assumed that the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel engine that will power the new Fiat-sourced commercial van, the ProMaster, would be the same engine used in the Jeep and Ram,but it’s not. While the 32 Trucks Plus

DEC 13 / Jan 14

displacement is the same, the ProMaster is an I-4 design while the domestic product gets a new V6 version. The key difference is power. The I-4 makes just 174 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Chrysler has had great success with its naturally aspirated V6 engine, the Pentastar 3.6-litre, in the past three years; frankly, it’s found in half its lineup now. Building on that architecture, Chrysler showed a 3.2-litre version at Chelsea Proving Grounds. Also a V6, this slightly smaller engine debuts in the new 2014 Jeep Cherokee. It carries over all the design features of its bigger brother and will no doubt show up in other future mid-sized offerings. This engine is also found in the Ram. What the 3.6 gas motor and the 3.0 diesel engine share is the eight-speed automatic transmis-

NEW WHEELS We used data recorders this year to determine fuel economy, and on the diesel Ram specifically, we got a real-world result of 9L/100 km empty. When we added the payload weight it rose to 10L/100 km and with the trailer being towed we averaged 18L/100 km. These are very good when compared to any V8 engine – which you’d have to have to match the tow rating of 9,000 pounds that the diesel will handle.

sion that not only maximizes low-end torque but also offers very low rpm at highway speeds. For this reason alone, the diesel is that much more amazing. During this year’s Canadian Truck King Challenge, we had a chance to test the diesel-equipped Ram – the first one in Canada. Our judges collectively felt that the power in this truck was more than enough for any job. And to that end we tested it empty, but also with 1,000 pounds of payload and towing 6,000 pounds of gravel in a dump trailer. Looking just at the numbers, consumers will note that the diesel makes almost the same torque as the 5.7L Hemi, yet its fuel efficiency is anything but.

Manufacturers earn a ton of money on trucks, so it’s no wonder that tech changes and optional add-ons coming from Ram engineering were front and centre at the test track and during the show in Milton, ON this fall. In addition to the powertrain combination, this Ram is available with air suspension at all four corners. As a bonus for towing, it auto-levels, doing away with the need for an equalizing hitch. Past this, there are a dozen smaller improvements that equal a very forward looking truck. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the inside and outside of this Ram is probably the best looking of any truck on the road. The Ram diesel will be a $4,500 option, but it will be available on all but the very base truck which will make it accessible to a wide range of buyers. Trucks can be ordered now and they should be arriving in the first quarter of 2014.

Substantial Curb Appeal

2013 Range Rover Evoque Coupé Story and photos by Russell Purcell

I

t’s hard to believe that the Range Rover Evoque has now been with us for three years. The capable mid-size utility vehicle has proven popular with the hip urban professional due to its distinctive styling and proven off-road capabilities. This may be the perfect mode of transportation for the Whistler set, as it has more than enough room for a weekend getaway, and enough curb appeal to make the valet take notice when you check in to the hotel. That is a relatively rare combination for a vehicle at this price point. The Evoque is Range Rover’s first effort at designing a crossover vehicle, and as such, it was vital that it feature enough content and positive visual currency to help it stand out from the sea of small-to-medium cross-over vehicles that are currently available to Canadian consumers. The aerodynamic body of the Evoque gives it the look of a concept car. It features a high beltline, slim greenhouse and rounded corners and is offered in both two- (Coupé) and four-door variants. The family buyer tends to select the four-door model as it is far more practical when it comes to loading both passengers and cargo, but empty nesters and fashion conscious singles relish the unique design and layout of the Evoque Coupé. There are three distinct trim levels for the four-door model available in Canada - Pure, Prestige, and Dynamic - and two for the Coupé – Pure and Dynamic. All are very well-equipped, but each possesses their own unique styling cues and subtleties to set them apart from each other. Range Rover’s goal is to make the one vehicle appeal to the broadest range of customers, and the three trim lines seem distinctive enough for this unique marketing ploy to actually work. My test unit was the Coupé in Pure form, and after a week behind the wheel, I came away impressed with its styling, comfort, and equipment level. 34 Trucks Plus

DEC 13 / Jan 14

The Evoque Coupé features long doors, so ingress and egress is a breeze when riding up front, and with easy slide power seats, accessing the rear compartment wasn’t as difficult as I expected it to be. I found all four seating positions to be comfortable enough for my XXXL frame, and there was a surprising amount of hip, leg and headroom offered in the rear compartment. The presence of an enormous glass roof will help reduce the level of claustrophobia that often comes along for the ride when you get stuck riding in the back of a two-door four-seater. Yes, I did say four-seater. The Evoque is marketed as a five passenger vehicle, but if you want them to be happy passengers, you might want to draw the line at four. Fit and finish was impressive, and it was difficult to find anything to quibble about. The seats are comfortable and supportive, and there were plenty of places to stow small items such as phones, gloves and maps. Should larger items need to be hauled, the rear seats fold down to create an almost perfectly flat cargo area. Visibility is excellent from the driver’s position, which makes navigating in the city, or on the trail, a stress-free venture. The

The transmission lever has been lifted from the Jaguar camp, as it is a rotary knob that periscopes up from the centre console when the vehicle is brought to life. The multi-purpose, eight-inch, touchscreen display that crowns the centre stack is easy to navigate, and the premium Meridian audio system will impress all who hear it.

The vehicle will operate in front-wheel drive under normal conditions, but when the going gets slippery, this innovative system can direct up to 70 percent of power to the rear wheels. The company’s four-setting Terrain Response System is on hand to permit the driver to customize the all-wheel drive system to best suit the road and terrain conditions. Dedicated settings include programs for Grass /Gravel /Snow, Mud & Ruts, Sand, and General operation. The system will automatically alter the throttle, brakes and traction control systems to help the vehicle maintain traction depending on the road conditions. The Range Rover Evoque Coupé represents a nice mix of luxury, comfort and utility in an all-weather, all-terrain package. If you want to leave an impression wherever you go, the Evoque comes loaded with substantial curb appeal for the price.

The Evoque features a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine which generates 240 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. Acceleration is brisk, as the Evoque will sprint from 0-to-100 km/h in a tick over seven seconds. The six-speed automatic transmission is a smooth operator, and it can be manually manipulated using compact, steering wheel-mounted paddles. The ride is smooth and handling is predictable. The Evoque proved agile and composed when asked to play on twisty roads, even under hard acceleration and braking. The vehicle benefits from a wide stance, stretched wheelbase, and communicative suspension, three factors that conspire to deliver dynamic handling and a refined ride. The Evoque comes equipped with a full-time all-wheel drive system with an electronically-controlled Haldex centre coupling.

NEW WHEELS van puts Chrysler back into the commercial truck market, one they have been out of since losing access to the Sprinter (which was a Dodge for several years) after the corporate breakup with Daimler.

Ram ProMaster is Here Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

I

n an automotive segment that is usually as boring as grey paint, commercial vans have made a loud splash in 2013. This year has seen Ford bring the larger Transit into play, replacing its ancient E-series, while the Mercedes Sprinter, which started this whole imported-from-Europe trend, has been updated, and Mercedes-Benz promises to also bring the smaller Vito commercial van to Canada. Chrysler though, with Fiat’s help, has debuted one of the more interesting vans this year. Shown last winter at the Chicago Auto Show, the Fiat Ducato is one of the most successful commercial vans in Europe. In fact, three generations and 30 years of service later, over 4.5 million Ducatos have been sold worldwide. It’s this truck that is coming to Canada (arriving now), renamed t h e P r o M a s t e r, a n d badged a Ram. This 36 Trucks Plus

European-sourced vans are no longer unique here, but the ProMaster design is. Unlike its competitors, it’s a front-wheel drive design. Because of this design element, Ram claims that its new van will offer several best-in-class features, such a s : f u e l e c o n o m y, c a r g o capacity, payload, turning radius, interior ceiling height and the lowest stepin height. C e r t a i n l y, w i t h o u t a r e a r driveshaft, axle and differential, the body would be able to sit very low, offering more inside space, low cargo floor and, for the aftermarket upfitter, a very clean back-of-cab to work with. Yes, ProMaster will be available as a chassis cab for the custom body market. What was obvious is that the ProMaster is going to go up against the Ford Transit and the Mercedes Sprinter head-to-head, as they do in Europe. Consider what the Transit is offering here. Three body lengths, two wheelbases; three roof heights will be available in a van, wagon, chassis cab and cutaway variation. Cargo volumes range from 250 to almost 500 cubic feet, nearly 80 percent more space than the largest of the old E-Series, says Ford. Look at the new standard body features on the ProMaster by comparison. It will sport two roof heights (either 90 or 101 inches), three wheelbases (118, 136, and 159 inches) and four body lengths. Where it does differ is in its unibody structure and that FWD propulsion. ProMaster offers up to a max payload of 2,333 kilograms while still being able to tow up to 2,310 kilograms. Powering the ProMaster will be either a 3.0-litre I-4 EcoDiesel engine or Chrysler’s own 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 gas engine. This

Transit will also offer a Class IV hitch. The Mercedes Sprinter only offers a 3.0-litre diesel engine at present, but its body configurations, lengths, towing abilities and roof heights are all comparable. The all-new 2014 Ram ProMaster MSRP will start at $28,495 for the Cutaway, Chassis Cab model; $29,495 for the 1500 cargo van and $31,495 for the 2500 cargo van. The release of these prices did not describe which engine would be the base standard, but it has to be assumed that it will be the Pentastar V6. What it will cost to upgrade to the 3.0-litre diesel is yet to be disclosed, but by comparison, in the Ram 1500 pickup, the new 3.0-litre EcoDiesel option costs $4,500. new Fiat-sourced diesel makes 174 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque at just 1,400 rpm. However, for owners who prefer to do their own shifting on grades, ProMaster will also offer the M40 gearbox. This transmission is an automatic, but can be shifted like a manual in certain situations. The computer’s pro-logic software also adjusts to grade and elevation changes. TECHNOLOGY these images, the most obvious being light intensity, pattern and colour. Intensity For light intensity, the HID on high beam is a clear winner with the halogen high beam second and the LED coming in third. But part of the intensity appearing brighter could be increased by the white background that the lights are being shone on. I am quite surprised at the fact that the halogen is second. In a real life situation, the halogen is clearly in third place, so I find that part of the pictures somewhat confusing, but it is probably due to the light colour and how well the halogen beam will travel over a short distance.

Headlight Bulb Comparison Story and photos by Brent Metzker, additional photos courtesy of the manufacturers

I

n this test, we are comparing halogen to HID to LED bulbs for headlights. We used a test stand with three identical InPro CarWear 4x6 crystal lens headlight housings which accept H4 headlight bulbs. We tested three different bulbs, a performance halogen bulb by CG Distribution (Anzo), an 1800 lumen LED Headlight bulb by SBx Parts and a 6000 Kelvin HID conversion headlight bulb by SBx Parts. All tests were done at the same time with a fully charged battery in a dark shop with the lights aimed at the shop door. Pictures were taken with a standard economy Exilim brand 10mp digital camera with the flash turned off. The light test stand centered the headlights at 67” from the floor so there will be no pattern on the ground and any that is on the ground can be considered “waste light”.

Pattern The pictures show the LED is the winner when it comes to the pattern. Whereas both the halogen and the HID have dead spots in the pattern, the LED does not exhibit any dead spots on either low or high beam. There is only one picture in which the entire door is illuminated and that is the LED High beam. The pattern on the low beam LED is truly the best low beam pattern by far. It does not have the sharp cutoff of the beam as the other two bulbs do, but it is clearly not required as there is no light scatter in the opposite lane. Remember, these lights are not in a projector housing. Colour The colour with the halogen and the HID are both more of a bluish white with the LED being more of a natural light. If legality is a concern, then the LED is once again a winner. If having a headlamp which emits a blue light is your goal, then you should stay away from the LED. Looking into the lights, it is very clear that the LED does not have the HID appearance that is so easy to pick out of oncoming traffic. As for both the halogen and the HID, they are available in different colour ranges; if that is a concern, the legality of the colour should not be a concern if you pay attention to that when you make your purchase. Some other things to consider:

The Results There are several different factors in play that are visible from

Projector housings We have tested the LED bulbs in a factory projector housing and were disappointed with the results. We believe it is because the light shines from the top and bottom of the bulb only and does not work as a projector should work with the lens focusing all the light. But we have heard from customers of great output in other

projector housings. We have also used HIDs in the same factory projector housing and have found the light increase over factory bulbs to be truly amazing. Our opinion, if you have projectors, is to use HID.

system that is monitored by an ECU to ensure that the lights (or other outputs) are operating properly. Anybody that has tried to install HID’s in a late-model Dodge product will quickly realize that an HID installation may not be as easy as simply plugging in the ballasts and bulbs. If the ECU does not see enough current draw, as can be the case with HID headlights, then it will turn the headlights off. Another issue can be reduced voltage to the headlights while operating as daytime running lights. HID ballasts do not like voltages under 12 volts and continued application of a reduced voltage can destroy the ballast in a short period of time. There are solutions such as adding resistors to increase the load and using relays to increase the available voltage but that adds to the complexity and cost of installing HIDs. Canbus systems are not a problem with halogen bulbs and have

Fog lights The LEDs seem to work especially well in fog light housings. They improve the light output greatly while not being annoying to

oncoming drivers. Once again, I believe that this can be attributed to the fact that the light is coming from the top and bottom of the bulb and not the sides, which makes for an annoying glare for the oncoming traffic.

Conclusion There is no clear winner in this battle. Different bulbs behave differently in different light housings. A set of performance halogen bulbs will give an improvement over factory bulbs that is easily noticeable at a low cost. The standard in “High Performance” bulbs for the last few years has been doing an HID conversion, but you can’t imagine the number of people that tell me they won’t sell HIDs because of all the warranty problems with some brands of HID conversions.

Canbus Headlight systems When we use the term Canbus it generally refers to an electrical

I remember telling a customer that our ballast failure rate is around two percent per year, and he then went on to tell me that the brand he had been using had a failure rate of over 100 percent per year, meaning he was replacing ballasts on a yearly basis for all his customers (ouch, it’s hard to make money that way). And the LED headlight bulbs are a new technology, unproven and only having been available around for a few months, so a “second design” will probably be in the works within a year. With that being said, consider your budget, your light housing style, and your willingness to experiment before investing your money in a set of upgraded headlight bulbs.

HID Low Beam

HID High Beam

Price It’s a no-brainer that halogen lights are the cheapest. A set of performance halogen bulbs start for under $30 a pair going up to over $100 for some brands. HIDs will be next on the list, running from the $150 range and up depending on the brand and the wattage. At the top of the price chart are the LED bulbs being well over $200 per set.

Emergency Vehicles

What do you really have to do when an emergency vehicle is bearing down on you with its lights flashing and siren blaring? Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

I

n any emergency where life or property is threatened, first responders are always fighting the clock to get to the scene. So whether it’s fire, police or ambulance, all of them are on the road, driving as fast as possible, and invariably the public is in the way. So what do you do when one of these vehicles is bearing down on you with lights flashing and siren blaring? In one sentence the simple answer is - Get out of the way! But it’s not always that simple, is it? What to do is also complicated by the advice passengers are always giving freely, and vocally, to the driver as a wailing siren approaches. So what are the real rules as opposed to the popular myths?

1. Giving way is just a courtesy. Many motorists believe that getting out of the way of a speeding emergency vehicle is a courtesy. Well it’s not; this forced action is enshrined in law in practically every jurisdiction in Canada. And, the penalties for not doing so will cost you points and money. 2. I only have to get out of the way if it’s convenient to do so. Convenient or not – you have to move. The rule is move to the right and stop. 3. If a fire truck is coming towards me I don’t have to do anything. While it may seem counterintuitive, this is wrong. If an emergency vehicle is coming towards you, you must pull to the right and stop till it passes. 4. If I didn’t see (or hear) them, then I’m not at fault for not moving. Sorry, it is your fault. Your music, or phone, or conversation can never distract you from what’s going on around your vehicle. If you are not regularly checking your mirrors to see what’s approaching you from behind, then yes, you are at fault. Alright, so instead of guessing, here are the real rules for each on-road situation. On a two-lane roadway Whether the emergency vehicle is approaching from behind or ahead, you must signal, move to the right as close as possible to the edge of the road - clear of any intersection - and stop. Once the vehicle has passed, shoulder check, signal and re-enter the traffic stream. On a one-way street Signal and pull to the right or the left side of the street, whichever side is clear but not in any intersection, and then stop. DEC 13 / Jan 14

FEATURE In case you are curious Whether you have a real concern about where the first responder is going – or are just nosy – you should know that it is illegal to follow a fire vehicle or ambulance responding to a call, within 150 metres. Approaching a stopped emergency vehicle - what to do This is the other situation that motorists find themselves in quite often. A police, fire or ambulance, with its red lights flashing, is stopped on the roadway and you are overtaking it. Here is what the current Ontario Highway Traffic Act requires motorists to do in that situation.

On a multi-lane highway Of all the emergency vehicle scenarios this is the most confusing. The reason is that some jurisdictions describe multi-lane as four lanes or more – while others only mention divided highways. However, none makes clear distinctions between the two. So, as with all rules of the road, we default to the simplest common rule. Slow down, signal and move to the right. The only difference between two-lane and multi-lane is that the law here says do not move onto the shoulder. Common sense dictates that the driver must monitor the direction, speed and intended path of the emergency vehicle while also minding the flow of normal traffic. At or in an intersection If you are stopped at an intersection or approaching one and an emergency vehicle is approaching (from any direction) you must yield until it passes through the intersection. Never block the intersection. Do not make a left turn if an emergency vehicle is approaching from behind. In this situation, proceed straight through the intersection, then signal, pull to the right and stop.

When approaching a police, fire or ambulance vehicle stopped with its red lights flashing in the same direction of travel, either in a lane or on the shoulder of the road, slow down and pass with caution. If the road has two or more lanes, the motorist must move over into another lane, if it can be done safely. Most jurisdictions in Canada now follow the same guidelines; again, this is a law, not a courtesy. If this seems new to you, that’s because it is. Curiously, it’s become a necessity to order motorists away from stopped emergency vehicles as the number of incidents of passenger vehicles hitting stopped first responders cars/trucks (with lights activated) has escalated as our roadways have become more congested over the years.

THE TRUCK GUY

Finding the Right Tires

Story and photos by John Harwood

S

oon after the new project vehicle, a 2013 Chevy Silverado 1500, was delivered from GM, the transformation to a Baja Prerunner was underway. The truck was outfitted with a set of King Off-Road Race Shocks to give it a superior ride with greater suspension travel. The shocks are adjustable up to three inches to provide increased lift for larger tires. Camburg Engineering upper control arms were installed to correct all of the geometry affected by lifting the vehicle, while providing a beefier front end for more demanding off-road needs.

the truck was likely going to face here in Southwest B.C. I determined that it would be driving on highways and logging roads more than anything else and in wetter conditions than my southern friends would face. My preference was to have it drive faster on service roads rather than slow mountain climbing and rock crawling or bogging through deep mud holes. As far as wheels go, I had my mind made up. Method Race Wheels in California was an easy choice! Their motto of ....Lighter, Stronger, Faster..... says it all! I called Bud Fitzgerald at Method Race Wheels, who suggested a set of flat-black Method Standards. I contacted Mike Miller of Toyo Tires Canada to find a set of Open Country M/Ts that would fit the truck and the driving conditions. After careful consideration, I chose the 295/70R17s. I talked to Carmine Sloan of Continental Tire who confirmed the 33X12.5x17 General Grabber Red Letters were the correct choice. Both setups were tested for overall performance, drivability and comfort on highway as well as logging roads, traction in sand, mud and on wet road surfaces, tire wear, fuel efficiency, road noise and braking. The findings from testing are listed below. Each category rated out of 5.

With the new high-performance suspension installed, it was time to look at tires and wheels. From my experiences in Baja and the deserts of California and Nevada, I had narrowed the choices down to General Grabber Red Letters and Toyo Open Country M/Ts. Both tires are used by professional desert racers down south and have proven to be superior tires. The Toyos are the favourites of racers B.J.Baldwin and Robby Gordon, who are two of the best. Before my selection, I examined the needs and the driving conditions

In conclusion, both tires performed amazingly well. The Toyos were more impressive where surface conditions demanded better traction and the Grabbers did better on the highway and were quieter. Both DEC 13 / Jan 14

tires suffered in wet conditions and took a beating on fuel efficiency. Toyo gets the edge on tire wear. A few noteworthy points: The Toyo M/Ts have a much higher load capacity and are a much better choice for a heavier truck carrying equipment, while the General Grabber Red Letters are eye catching and have a great coolness element! It is a tough choice between Toyo Open Country M/Ts and the General Grabber Red Letters. The obvious conclusion is to have a set of both and switch them up as demands warrant. I would have to say the most important demand is traction on service/logging roads. Therefore, The Toyo Tires Open Country M/T is the overall better tire.

Early Look 2015 Chevrolet Colorado

Story and photos by Gerry Frechette, additional photos courtesy of GM Canada

I

t is not often we get the chance to have a look at the final production version of a vehicle almost a year before it is released to the market, but that opportunity presented itself at the recent Los Angeles International Auto Show. Yes, Chevrolet showed off the ‘15 Colorado mid-size pickup there, just to whet the appetites of those who might be thinking of starting to look at one over the next year. The selection of these vehicles used to be extensive, but at the moment, there are only two bodyon-frame mid-size pickups for sale here, the Toyota Tacoma (with by far the most market share) and Nissan Frontier, plus the unibody Honda Ridgeline. And that’s it. No Ford and no Ram, both of which left the North American market a couple of years ago. But they, and GM, currently sell these smaller trucks in other overseas markets. Why not here? Truck buyers seem willing to spend a little more to get a full-size truck, with all its added room and capability. But GM feels it can sell the Colorado and take on Toyota and its ageing (for now) Tacoma, and on the face of it (because that is all

we have seen), it looks like this truck has the goods to, as GM puts it, reinvent the midsize truck. Chevrolet expects Colorado to be the most powerful truck in the segment, and the old five-cylinder engine is now officially history. A 2.5-litre I4 will be standard, and a 3.6-litre V6 will be optional. Both engines are based on proven designs already found in other Chevrolet vehicles, but tuned uniquely for truck duty. Power outputs are still estimates at this stage of the game, but the four is estimated to deliver 193 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, while the V6 pumps out 302 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, which would be enough power to offer class-leading payload capacity and trailering capability of more than 6,700 pounds (3,039 kg), according to GM. But here is the kicker, already confirmed by GM. In Colorado’s second model year – 2016 – a Duramax 2.8-litre I4 turbodiesel engine will be offered. Chevy says that the Colorado’s two gasoline engines will be matched with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.5 four will be available with a six-speed manual transmission on extended cab 2WD Work Truck models. The Colorado’s configurations are expected to be an extended cab model with a 6-foot bed, a crew cab with a 5-foot bed, and a crew cab with a 6-foot bed. With the tailgate down, the 6-foot bed allows hauling of 8-foot-long items. Naturally, the Colorado will have a full suite of connectivity and safety technology, along with creative solutions for hauling and accessing cargo, and all the expected creature comforts. The way Chevrolet puts it, the Colorado will have all the attributes of a full-size truck like the new Silverado, but in slightly smaller scale when it comes to capability. It will be interesting to see how well Colorado sells, and where those customers will come from, but the truck itself looks like it will appeal to a wide range of needs and tastes.

2014 Honda Pioneer 700 Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

I

t seems to me that Honda, as a company, is never happy. By that I don’t mean that they don’t take joy in their products. Instead, over the years, I’ve seen them take perfectly good vehicles and change them – often much before the expected “expiry” date. No, it seems that almost as soon as a product makes it into production, a group of engineers starts tinkering with it and changing it. So, on the surface at least, I think it’s fair to say that they just aren’t happy with their results. The other way to look at it, though, would be to say that Honda never stops improving, a statement that I find applies company-wide. This past June, I saw another example of this constant improvement culture at Honda’s South Carolina Recreational Vehicle production plant. In an elaborate line-off ceremony, a white jumpsuit-clad employee drove a new Pioneer 700 UTV off the end of the assembly line to the applauding approval of the entire plant’s staff. This new product is the next step in the evolution of Honda’s first UTV product “Big Red.” However, short of also having four tires, it is a completely different vehicle. Normally, generations or linear evolution is how all motorized vehicles progress – whether cars, trucks, ATVs, snowmobiles or motorcycles. But once again, I saw that company trait. Honda is just never happy. Big Red was launched just a few years ago, yet here it was already being replaced. In fact, that’s one reason for the name change as well. Pioneer is so different from Big Red that to call it a generational upgrade would be wrong, so instead, Honda decided to start a new timeline with a new name – Pioneer. The choice of name is also telling because a Pioneer always comes first. By using that name, Honda is saying that this UTV will be the first in a line of vehicles that will always be improving from this starting line. So, while this story is about the new Pioneer, Big Red must be mentioned because it was the first. Big Red gave Honda a UTV product that from a competition point of view made them a player in the market. However 52 Trucks Plus

DEC 13 / Jan 14

that first effort was not without its drawbacks. Big Red had a number of design issues, none of which on its own was serious. Instead, taken together, it made Big Red a good first effort that Honda was keen to follow up with another effort. The building of the new Pioneer models includes an all-new chassis formed around Honda’s 700cc four-stroke engine driving its automatic transmission. This new chassis includes a long-travel suspension system that smooths out the ride over tough terrain. The new bodywork comes standard with integrated doors and head restraints; after all, keeping the occupants inside the UTV in case of mishap is the key to safety in these machines. However, Pioneer is primarily a workhorse and as such, can carry loads over tough terrain as well as being able to tow big loads. But moving people is where the Pioneer really departs from the original Big Red. This new unit is the traditional side-by-side at first glance, built for two. But on closer inspection, you’ll see that a quickly convertible seat system changes its body into a four-seater. Best of all, it doesn’t have to stay in one or the other configuration; it changes as needs do – and quickly. This conversion also takes into account the need for just three seats, so from the conventional two forward seating positions, Pioneer can add a third and a fourth. The “how” is pretty straightforward. The two rear seats tilt up out of the bed using a release latch which then locks into place in the upright position. Do one seat back – then the other – as needed. The rear passengers also get access to three-point seat belts, which are built into the Roll Over Protection Structure (ROPS). Here they are out of the way, yet easy to get to when needed. The Pioneer cargo bed, like most UTV beds, tilts. I mention this because even with the convertible

POWERSPORTS seats, you don’t lose the tilt function. Mind you, it is disabled when the seats are up and passengers are in them. This was one of the things we tried first during the introduction. Tech writers have a bad sense of humour. Anyway, they don’t tip when occupied. The wheelbase on Pioneer is a little longer than the one found on Big Red - 76.8 inches versus 75.7 inches, yet overall length is just about the same. The key body difference is in the width, though. Pioneer is nearly three inches narrower. This addresses a complaint about Big Red – it was too wide for many trails. These new proportions give the Pioneer a tighter 14.8 feet turning radius. But, almost as importantly, the ground clearance has been raised too – to 10.3 inches. However, perhaps the most telling specification is found in the suspension travel: both new models have a full 7.9 inches of travel on the double-wishbone independent front suspension system, while the same setup gets 9.1 inches of in the rear. This a two-inch gain. Again, a significant upgrade from Big Red. Also, those twin rear shocks are adjustable using a spring preload, so it’s easy to change from light use to a rate that can carry heavy loads. Both versions of the Pioneer 700 get new front tires sized 25 x 8-12. These new tires help give the Pioneer improved steering feel and more agile steering. In South Carolina, we had a chance to drive the new off-the-line Pioneers on the plant grounds. Here they have a 10-kilometre test track that winds though pine forest, rocky stream beds – and some lovely mosquito-infested swamp that felt almost like Ontario in May. The point of this bush bashing, though, was to give us a feel for the new Pioneer. To that end, the overriding sensation was of driving a machine that was smaller than it really was. Pioneer turns quickly and easily following twisting trails almost as easily as the Honda Foreman that was out front leading the pack. Its suspension sucks up bumps, pops over logs, and never really bottoms out. The suspension is not stiff per se; it just gives and returns quickly. The most telling trait, though, is that Pioneer felt almost the same with a single driver as it did with driver and three passengers aboard. We didn’t have a chance to tow or weigh down the box, but from the feel of the engine, I suspect this will be no problem. Driving the Pioneer is Honda’s veteran 675cc liquid-cooled OHV single-cylinder four-stroke four-valve engine with Programmed Fuel Injection (PGM-FI). This is a motor that is a proven performer, and in keeping with Honda’s credo, they give customers all the power they need, but not power for the sake of bragging rights. In fact, this is Honda’s biggest motor and I agree that any more would be pointless. Getting the power to the ground is an automotive-style transmission that features a hydraulic torque converter, three hydraulic clutches and an Electronic Control Module (ECM) to automatically select one of three forward gears and one reverse gear. The ECM monitors throttle, speed, engine rpm, gear selector position, brake application and engine oil temperature. It uses all these inputs to decide what gear to use and how quickly to shift. Also, on downhill slopes, the transmission provides positive engine braking for slowing power.

As for traction, Pioneer uses full-time 2WD for improved traction. Real 2WD – not slip and grip. This is a non-differential rear end, similar to the ones used on Honda ATVs equipped with IRS. When the driver wants to change settings, a gearshift selector makes it easy to go to 4WD mode. Pioneer also has a front differential lock for maximum grunt. Of course, there are no belts – that’s a given with Honda, but it is a major point that needs repeating. Honda transmissions use a durable shaftdrive design. So what else needs to be mentioned? That’s a long list, but there are just a few that I think are worthy. The engine gets a new mounting system that helps tune out vibration. This idea then extends to vibration-isolating bushings, on every contact point for the driver and passenger—steering wheel, handholds, floor, seat bottom and seat back. Past that, the 2WD/4WD selector also gets a new dual shift-mapping program that automatically selects between two transmission shifting modes—Cruise or Sport mode. Yes, this is automatic – the computer senses what the driver is doing and changes accordingly. My first thought was good – this helps with power. But it was later that I also realized that it’s also about fuel economy. Pioneer can stretch its fuel capacity this way. As for onboard capacity, we know Pioneer can carry up to four adults, but past this, the tilt bed will also accommodate a 1,000-pound load while also towing 1,500 pounds. Multiple D-rings are found on the bed and wall of the cargo area. For work (especially at night), Honda has added 37.5-watt headlights and a higher AC generator output (from 410 watts on Big Red to 450 watts), increased its fuel capacity and built a big sealed glove box. It’s interesting to note that the new Pioneer was designed by Honda Research and Development in Ohio, and built at Honda South Carolina. In many ways, this North American influence and flavour is what I tasted during the debut of this new UTV. Honda promises us more Pioneer versions in the future, as well. I look forward to that.

2014 KZ SPREE 321RKS

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

T

he Calgary Stampede is billed as the “Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.” High praise indeed, seeing as they have heaped it on themselves. Still, this was the 101st year of the event and GMC trucks, a major sponsor of the Stampede, included a night of chuckwagon races and grandstand show entertainment for us during its Alberta truck and trailer towing program. While I’ve been to Calgary many, many times, I’ve never made it to the Stampede, so I take statements like greatest show with a grain of salt. I consider it vague marketing puffery when I hear descriptions like that - until now, that is. And now that I have been to the Stampede, I will say clearly, if you haven’t been – go. I was there just two weeks after the Bow River flooded to record levels drowning the entire downtown Stampede site. In fact while the massive cleanup of the grounds was a feat in itself, the mountains of debris that still littered the sides of the river spoke to the size of the effort and the work that would still have to be done, but the show did go on. The brisk sale of “Stampede 101 – Come Hell or High Water” T-shirts generated much needed cash for the necessary work. In fact, the entire City of Calgary seemed single-minded in its determination to put on its show no matter what. Truly, it was a triumph of labour, co-ordination and civic spirit. Now, like any fair, anywhere, the Stampede has a cheesy midway that offers questionable games of chance and oversized stuffed animals, and will feed you anything that can be fried (how about deep fried butter or beer?), but the show that really skewered my attention took place on the race track that is the heart of the Stampede. Each day begins after lunch with cowboys performing in traditional contests that, although they can be described, really defy accurate description of the physical prowess and contortions necessary to compete in them. steers are worth the ticket price alone, but it’s the nightly grandstand show that is truly world class. After the GMC-sponsored Rangeland chuckwagon races end at 8 pm, a monstrous stage (split into two titanic sections set on massive trailers) is towed into place and a two-hour show begins that features musical acts that ranged from KISS and Queen tribute bands to the Calgary philharmonic orchestra playing Led Zeppelin selections on the violin. Later, opera singers on suspended platforms were backed by the “Young Canadians,” a 125-strong kids group from across the country (ages nine to 18) that sing and dance in a choreographed mass that is as stunning as it is hard to follow. All the while, pyrotechnics are bursting and shooting from every possible direction during all the musical numbers. And just when I figured the show had peaked, a white grand piano, suspended on wires, was lowered to the stage, all the while being played by an Elton John impersonator, with fireworks shooting out it. Frankly, towing the new KZ Spree with the newest GMC Sierra was a bit of an anticlimax after that – but then, it is my job – so Tracie and I headed south to the lakes and foothills region down past High River.

RV-ING Alberta is the biggest market (per capita) for RVs in the country, and once you have visited you’ll see why. The population centres (Calgary, Edmonton) are on the prairie, but just off, in the misty distance, are the mountains, and that’s where most everyone goes. The other place is to water, and while the lakes out west aren’t up to Ontario (or Quebec or Manitoba) standards, they are cute, but again a bit of a drive from the urban settings most Albertans live in. The KZ Spree that Bucars (a local Calgary area dealer) set us up with is more than plenty of living space for weekends. It can easily sleep six or just two (depending on floorplan) while offering lots of room for longer stays. Much of that room comes from the two slideouts that open up the living room and the forward bedroom.

The Deluxe sleeper sofa in the other half of the slide (a very large slide) is the fold-out variety. While the arguments rage over which is more comfortable (inflatable versus mechanical foldable), it does open and close quickly into a central space. When closed, it sits directly across from two swivel rockers that form the main conversation area. This sofa would be the overnight spot for guests, or older kids, in this floorplan. As such, the bathroom is set up with a hallway entry on the way to the master bedroom and a second sliding door from inside. The privacy aspect of this design will make having overnight guests a little less intrusive. Also nice in this bathroom is the amount of space. First around the toilet (it’s not jammed into a corner or up against a counter) and secondly with the large corner shower and skylight. Space around and above in this enclosure makes bathing less of an Olympic gymnastics exercise – a consideration for all but the smallest among us.

The kitchen in our unit took up the rear of the trailer, in an L-shape that made for lots of cooking and prep room. In fact, this is a feature that most buyers will be looking for, as it really is the focal point of the trailer. Standing at the stove (with standard oven), the cook can reach the 8-cu ft double-fridge, sink, several cupboards and microwave without having to take a step. The rear of the main slide houses the optional freestanding dining table (standard is a U-shaped dinette) and the fold-out couch takes up the front end. This hardwood table has an expandable leaf and it fits as a more mature option with the large kitchen that would most likely be ordered by parents of grown (or flown) kids.

With the rear of the trailer being dominated by the kitchen, the front of the living space is built around the 32-inch TV. This flat-screen (size varies by model) sits on a faux marble counter over nice hardwood cabinets and drawers. Above it is more storage in the form of hardwood cupboards with glass inserts which set off the radius ceiling, plus accenting the interior height (82-inches) of the trailer. This all is very rich looking, a real contrast to the cheap plastic bubble lighting that dominates the space. That surprised me. Except for one wall fixture, KZ went cheap on lights. Where they didn’t cheap out, though, is on unseen standard items like heated tanks, fully-enclosed underbelly, Ultrulube axles, Al-Ko auto adjusting brakes, roller bearing drawer guides, innerspring mattress, one-piece seamless roof and diamond plate front rock guard. At the ranch we camped at, we found lots of manure and prairie dogs, but no services. The Spree dry camped very nicely in the field despite this. Four standard scissor jacks took the bounce out of the trailer when extended, but you will need a piece of board for firmer footing on soft ground like we had. The dual batteries provided more than enough juice for lights and pumps. The propane ran the water heater, fridge and the furnace (it dropped down to 10C after the thunderstorm). All the controls were easily found, easy to read, and featured one-button operation. That 17-foot awning (powered) kept our doorway area dry and had no trouble with standing the turbulence of the storm that blew through that night. Looking at the design of the Carefree awning, I figure this is because the double scissor arms provided strength but also allowed plenty of slack for the material cover that prevented tearing.
