Two transmissions will be available for the new model - a new six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic with sports mode - and both will be combined with all-wheel drive systems. Given that the Mitsubishi Triton and many other small-to-medium sized pickups aren’t made available here in North America, the safe bet is that you won’t find the Fullback at your local FCA dealership.

GMC Introduces Pair of Trucks at LA Auto Show 2017 Canyon Denali Decadence doesn’t just exist in the car or SUV world, and the Canyon Denali is proof of that. The industry’s first premium mid-size pickup was revealed at a special event a day ahead of LA Auto Show 2015, and will combine Denali exclusives like a chrome grille, 20-inch machined aluminum wheels and Mulan leather seating, with the Canyon’s signature performance and technology features. A new 2.8-litre Duramax turbo diesel engine is being offered, capable of trailering a maximum of 3,493 kg. Smart diesel exhaust braking provides greater control and reduced brake wear by modulating the brakes depending on load and grade conditions. The company claims the diesel truck mill is the cleanest they’ve ever produced, and will yield an estimated fuel consumption figure of 8.2 L/100 km on fourwheel drive (4WD) equipped variants in highway driving. The 2017 Canyon Denali is scheduled to arrive in dealerships late 2016. 2016 Sierra Denali Ultimate Hopping aboard the vehicle debut bandwagon, the full-size 2016 Sierra Denali Ultimate was also unveiled at the same time. Like the Canyon, this GMC takes “the range-topping style, craftsmanship and

GMC Canyon Denali capability of the Sierra Denali even higher.” The upscale trim line is available on 4WD 1500 crew cab models that have either a 5-foot2-inch or 6-foot-6-inch cargo bed. Access to the bed is simple using Tri-Mode Power Steps, an articulating running board that swings towards the back when you tap the end with your foot. New for 2016 include a Hydra-Matic 8L90 eight-speed automatic transmission paired with the standard 5.3 L V8 motor, revised Denali grille, LED lighting front and rear, wireless phone charging and a remote locking tailgate. On sale early 2016.

F

or the past nine years, veteran automotive journalists have donated their time to act as judges in the only annual North American truck competition that tests pickup and van models

head-to-head – while hauling payload and also towing. The Canadian Truck King Challenge started in 2006, and each year, these writers return because they believe in this straight-forward approach to testing, and they know their readers want the results it creates.

TRUCK KING CHALLENGE vehicle and transmit fuel consumption data to a company in Kitchener, Ontario (MyCarma) that records, compiles and translates those readings into fuel economy results that span the almost 4,000 test kilometres that we accumulate over two long days. These results are as real-world as it gets. The numbers are broken into empty runs, loaded results and even consumption while towing. Each segment is measured during test loops with the trucks being driven by five judges – one after the other. That’s five different driving styles, acceleration, braking and idling (we don’t shut the engines down during seat changes). I started it (and continue to do it) for the same reason – that and my belief that after 40 years of putting trucks to work, I know what’s important to Canadians. Now, that’s a long list of qualifications, but in a nutshell it’s the concept that a truck can be pretty, but that alone is just not enough – it also better do its job, and do it well. This year, nine judges travelled from Quebec, Saskatchewan and across Ontario to the Kawartha Lakes Region where we test the trucks each year. All the entries are delivered to my 70-acre IronWood test site days before the judges arrive so we can prepare them for hauling and towing. In the meantime, they are all outfitted with digital data collectors. These gadgets plug into the USB readers on each

TRUCK KING CHALLENGE

The Head River test loop itself is also a combination of road surfaces and speed limits. At 17 km long, it runs on gravel, secondary paved road and highway. Speed limits vary from 50 to 80 km/h, and the road climbs and drops off an escarpment–like ridge line several times; plus it crosses the Head River twice at its lowest elevation. The off-road part of our testing is done on my own course at IronWood. Vans are not tested on the off-road, though it’s noteworthy that the Mercedes Sprinter was equipped with a four-wheel drive system this year. This is the third year that we have used the data collection system and released to the public the final fuel consumption report that MyCarma prepares for the Challenge. It’s become one of our most anticipated results. But how do we decide what to test? Well, as anyone who’s bought a truck knows, the manufacturers never sleep; every year brings something different to market. As the Challenge looks to follow market trends, what and how we test must change each year too, and the coming 2016 model year proved no different. We had a field of 14 contenders at IronWood this year, covering four categories. These were as follows: Full-Size Half-Ton Pickup Truck • Ford F-150, Platinum, 3.5L, V6 EcoBoost, gas, 6-speed Auto • Ford F-150, XLT, 2.7L, V6 EcoBoost, gas, 6-speed Auto • Chevrolet Silverado, High Country, 6.2L, V8, gas, 8-speed Auto • Ram 1500, Laramie, 3.0L EcoDiesel, V6, diesel, 8-speed Auto Mid-Size Pickup Truck • Toyota Tacoma, TRD Off-Road, 3.5L V6, gas, 6-speed Auto • GMC Canyon, SLT, 2.8L Duramax, I-4, diesel, 6-speed Auto • Chevrolet Colorado, Z71, 3.6L V6, gas, 6-speed Auto Full-Size Commercial Vans • Ford Transit 250, 3.2L Power Stroke I-5, diesel, 6-speed Auto • Mercedes Sprinter 2.0L BLUE-Tec I-4, diesel, 2X4 Auto • Mercedes Sprinter 3.0L BLUE-Tec V6, diesel, 4X4 Auto • Ram ProMaster 1500, 3.0L I-4, diesel, 6-speed Auto/Manual 12 Trucks Plus

Mid-Size Commercial Vans • Ram ProMaster City, SLT, 2.4L Tigershark I-4 gas, 9-speed Auto • Nissan NV200, 2.0L I-4, gas, Xtronic CVT Auto • Mercedes Metris , 2.0L I-4, gas, 7-speed Auto These vehicles are each all-new – or have significant changes made to them. However, this year the Challenge decided to try something else new –by offering a returning champion category. This idea had been growing for a while, having everything to do with the engineering cycles that each manufacturer follows. Simply put, trucks are not significantly updated each year and to date, we have only included “new” iron in each year’s competition. However, we started to think that just because a truck is in

the second or third year of its current generational life shouldn’t make it non-competitive. Certainly, if you watch the builders’ ads, it doesn’t! So, this spring, we decided that for the first time, the immediate previous year’s winner (in each category) would be offered the chance to send its current truck back to IronWood to compete against what’s new on the market. This year this invitation was made to the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, Ford Transit 250 and Nissan NV200. Each was a previous winner and each accepted the offer to return and fight for their crowns. They, along with the new vehicles, took the tests over two days with the judges evaluating everything from towing feel, to interior features. The judges scored each vehicle in 20 different categories; these scores are then averaged across the field of judges and converted to a score out of 100. Finally, the “as tested” price of each vehicle is also weighted against the average (adding or subtracting points) for the final outcome. And these are this year’s segment winners ... Truly Capable

2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara

C

hrysler’s Jeep division has expanded over the years to include a wide range of models, but it is the company’s venerable Wrangler sport utility offering that continues to draw most of the traffic into Jeep showrooms. Two factors that make the Wrangler so popular is that it offers true off-road capabilities and the capability to be quickly transformed into a convertible should you be one to relish the open air driving experience. Jeep offers the Wrangler in two wheelbases and a variety of trim packages. All Wranglers offer five-passenger seating, but should you want to maximize utility, the long wheelbase “Unlimited” model should be your choice. The decision makers at Jeep have worked hard to preserve the Wrangler’s authenticity in that they continue to focus on the vehicle’s utility and off-road ability rather than softening it up in an effort to make it more comfortable and passenger friendly. Don’t get me wrong, as the Wrangler is perfectly suited for everyday use, but if ride comfort and dynamic handling are qualities you seek in a vehicle, the Wrangler may not be for you. Just the act of getting into a Wrangler can be a challenge, especially for shorter individuals, but side-mounted tube steps are available to lessen your plight. Once behind the wheel, you immediately notice that the seating position provides the driver with enhanced visibility, although the broad plateau of a hood can be somewhat difficult to see over. 18 Trucks Plus

NEW WHEELS Standard equipment includes air conditioning, heated power side mirrors, leatherwrapped steering wheel with integrated controls, height-adjustable driver seat, cruise control, and a full suite of safety nannies to keep you out of trouble (including Electronic Stability Control with Hill Start Assist, Traction Control, Electronic Roll Mitigation and Trailer Sway Control). There are a number of options available to allow customers to equip their rig to best suit their individual needs. One of the most popular options is to replace the standard black roof with a body-coloured Freedom Top with deep tint windows. Fitting one of these to the Wrangler gives the vehicle huge visual impact and makes it look more refined overall.

The passenger cabin is comfortable, although utilitarian by design, but there is plenty of room to stretch out as all seating positions offer enough space for adult heads, hips, and limbs. Our test vehicle was the Unlimited Sahara model, which is near the upper end of the Jeep Wrangler lineup, so it features a long list of optional equipment and accessories that are included with the Sahara package upgrade.

The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, like most of the “Trail Rated” Jeep models, has been designed to perform in hostile environments. The product planning team at Jeep hope that the image of driving such a capable vehicle will appeal to those individuals who have a sense of adventure or like to test their limits. This is the main allure for putting a Wrangler in your garage for members of the company’s loyal customer base who embrace the fact that driving a Wrangler is good for their image. The Wrangler derives its motivation from the now-proven Pentastar 3.6-litre engine. This award-winning V6 produces 285

2017 Ford Super Duty Preview Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

F

ollowing the successful launch of the 2015 F-150 pickups last year, it was inevitable that news of the redesigned workhorse lineup of Super Duty trucks wouldn’t be far behind. In early fall, Ford appropriately chose the backdrop of the State Fair of Texas to give a preview of the upcoming 2017 model year vehicles. Before throwing the covers off, Doug Scott, Ford Truck group marketing manager, spoke of Super Duty customers as some of the most diverse in the business, encompassing contractors and workers in government, the police force, telephone and communications, construction, and everywhere in between. “Their truck is a tool — possibly their most valuable and expensive tool,” says Scott, citing a stat that 90 percent of owners use their Super Dutys to tow, with 70 percent towing at least once a month. “For these people, their truck cannot be down. If the truck is down, they’re not making money,” he says. Perhaps that is why Ford is going with the tagline “North America’s work truck reinvented: all-new Ford Super Duty is toughest, smartest, most capable Super Duty ever.” DEC 15 / JAN 16 Trucks Plus 23

NEW WHEELS Chief engineer Craig Schmatz introduced himself on stage to talk about some specifics to back up the company’s lofty claim. Like the F-150, the Super Dutys have lost some weight. Up to 350 pounds have been shaved off, while using components that are larger and sturdier. Schmatz says the underlying frame is fully boxed and made from steel that is 24 times stiffer than previously. In addition, for the first time, the body uses high-strength military-grade aluminum alloy in its construction, as fans of the F-150 may know is actually more dent-resistant than conventional materials, despite being lighter. In terms of the latest generation being the smartest, there have been numerous technological and convenience upgrades made. At the top of the list is the available inclusion of seven cameras installed from front to back, which together provide a 360-degree birds-eye view of the vehicle. One of the cameras is found integrated into the centre high-mounted stop lamp, allowing the driver to see exactly what is going on in the cargo box, and eases the hooking up of gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers. A reverse guidance system takes some of the guesswork out of backing up a trailer. Both long-time stalwarts and newcomers to the brand should be eagerly anticipating the completely revised SYNC 3 infotainment system, already available on some current Ford offerings. Voice recognition has been improved so that it understands conversational language and address inputs; there’s a simplified, easierto-use graphic interface; and the display is now an eight-inch

24 Trucks Plus

touchscreen resembling a smart mobile device. For example, the navigation app utilizes pinch-to-zoom functionality. Frequent towers will likely appreciate a Blind Spot Information System that takes into account the length of the trailer. Radar sensors in the back constantly monitor the area outside the field of view, flashing an alert if an object is detected. Other safety features include lane departure warning, letting the driver know if he or she has drifted outside the markers via

NEW WHEELS steering wheel vibrations, and adaptive cruise control that can take control of the throttle and brakes to automatically follow the car in front and maintain a safe distance. Working into the night is no problem either, because the 2017 Super Duty houses plenty of LEDs, not only in the head and taillights, but also in the side mirrors and bed. That brings us to the most capable portion of the equation. This iteration will represent the vehicle’s highest-ever fifth-wheel and conventional towing capacities, as well the ability to haul

After the presentation, journalists were let loose to crawl in and out of different versions of the Super Duty, of which there are five: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum. The interior abounds with storage — glove box volume has doubled from before. A particularly smart innovation is the large lockable cubby found underneath the Crew Cab rear seats, where occupants can store valuables and walk away without too much worry.

the most payload, thanks to a beefed-up trailer hitch, rear axle, transfer case, and so on. Powertrain choices are between two gasoline engines, a 6.2-litre V8 or a 6.8-litre V10, or a turbocharged diesel 6.7-litre Power Stroke mill.

It’s fairly obvious that styling has taken after the truck’s “little” F-150 brother, with some extra flair added. The headlights were inspired by C-clamps, and there are no fewer than four different grille designs, depending on the model. Further specs have not yet been released, but be on the lookout for when we get behind the wheel of the 2017 Ford Super Duty for a first drive.

Under the hood is a 600-horsepower ROUSH supercharged 5.0L engine as the 6.2L is no longer offered in the F-150 lineup. Additional components to the special-edition truck are a ROUSH side-exit exhaust system and a FOX 2.0 Performance Series suspension system. In addition to the special examples we saw at the show, ROUSH will make the kit available to the masses offering them through ROUSH Ford dealerships. ROUSH President Gary Jurick tells us there will be a non-powertrain option available and that they plan to offer a multi-phase approach much like they do for the Mustang.

NEW WHEELS

And the best new pickup is....

Story by Russell Purcell, photos courtesy GM Canada and Toyota Canada.

T

he Best New Pickup category at this year’s annual Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) Testfest event may have only included a trio of entries, but all three have the potential to garner the top award and be named Pickup Truck of the Year by the organization. General Motors has two players in the game this year, the Chevrolet Silverado and the GMC Canyon Diesel. The other entrant contesting for the crown comes from the world’s largest car company, Toyota, which also builds quality trucks. For model year 2016, the Japanese company is rolling out the latest version of its very popular Toyota Tacoma and Tundra pickups, but the company’s Canadian arm decided to enter t h e Ta c o m a f o r t h i s r o u n d as it is already appearing in showrooms. 2016 Chevrolet Silverado Base price (MSRP): $54,420 Price as Tested: $60,110 Last year Ram and Ford fought the good fight in the halfton weight class at Testfest, but this year the Chevrolet Silverado became the featured heavyweight in this category. GM brass entered a heavily optioned quad-cab model equipped with four-wheel drive. The truck features GM’s 5.3-litre 32 Trucks Plus

DEC 15 / JAN 16

Ecotec V8 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This combination is able to travel 100 kilometres with a combined rating of 13.1 litres of fuel. Nifty features like powertrain grade braking, tow/haul mode, Hill Descent Control, beefy Ranchero shocks, and an underbody shield (for transfer case protection) help prepare this truck to handle heavy lifting duties. Passenger safety is enhanced by the addition of an expanded arsenal of airbags, Stabilitrak electronic stability control system with proactive roll avoidance, traction control, trailer sway control, Hill Start Assist, and a rear vision camera system.

NEW WHEELS Styling elements include advanced LED headlamps with LED signature lights, power folding mirrors, a unique Z71 grille design, brushed metal sill plates, 18-inch aluminum wheels, spray-on bed-liner, and corner steps on the rear bumper. This package handled the driving evaluation course with ease, and made very short work of the slippery and muddy portions of the route. The transmission operated smoothly and with precision, and power delivery was instantaneous. GMC Canyon Diesel Base price (MSRP): $39,895 Price as Tested: $46,980 The GMC Canyon and its Chevrolet sister the Colorado debuted last year, but the big news here is what resides under the hood of this year’s entrant. The Canyon tester features a Duramax 2.8-litre turbo diesel V6 engine that generates 181 horsepower and a prodigious 369 lb-ft of torque. This engine replaces the standard 3.6-litre V6 engine and is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Canyon’s drivetrain was never overwhelmed during our test period, and the four-wheel drive system helped the Canyon navigate through the rough sections of the evaluation course without any drama despite running on all-season tires. The suspension did an excellent job of smoothing out the irregular road surfaces typical of rural Ontario, while still offering enough travel to clamber through deep ruts and road debris. The electrically-assisted power rack-and-pinion steering allowed for accurate vehicle placement and handling was sharp and direct.

GM has equipped the Canyon with power-assisted four-wheel disc brakes with Duralife long-life brake rotors to ensure they will hold up to heavy usage under load, and ABS is standard. The crew cab test unit was similarly equipped to its larger cousin the Silverado, as it featured tow/haul mode, GM’s proven Stabilitrak electronic stability control system, electronic traction control, a full complement of airbags (front, curtain and side), and a rear vision camera system. Styling elements include LED projector headlamps, front fog lights, power heated mirrors, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and a healthy use of chrome enhancements.

NEW WHEELS The interior was refined and loaded with a good mix of comfort and electronic accessories, but the package looked like it would hold up well to the abuse that often comes with it being a truck. The diesel engine pulled strongly and generated far less noise than diesel engines of old, and combined fuel economy figures for this vehicle were indicated to be 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres of travel. Toyota Tacoma 4x4 Double Cab Base price (MSRP): $27,995 Price as Tested: $40,585 The Toyota Tacoma has been around for over three decades, and during this period it has built up an almost cult-like following due to its legendary reliability and rugged design. Now entering its third generation, the venerable light truck takes on a look more akin to its 4Runner brethren and more in line with the styling traits being exhibited across the Toyota lineup. The test Tacoma came equipped with a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces a healthy 278 horsepower and 265 lb-ft of torque. This clever engine runs Toyota’s D-4S system and will switch from port to direct injection based on driving conditions. It also runs on the Atkinson cycle using VVT-iW variable valve timing. A silky smooth 6-speed automatic and Toyota’s ultra-durable four-wheel drive system help deliver the power to the pavement, gravel, or whatever the Tacoma wants to run on. And this truck, much like its forebears, will run on virtually any semi-solid surface. The Tacoma features a larger grill and new projector beam headlamps, and both the tailgate and cargo bed have been redesigned. Aerodynamic tweaks to the shape have helped improve fuel economy and cut down on wind noise. Combined figures for this vehicle were indicated to be 11.9 litres per 100 kilometres. The Tacoma’s independent front suspension (double wishbone / coil springs / stabilizer bar) and rear multi-leaf spring setup

34 Trucks Plus

DEC 15 / JAN 16

combine to deliver a competent ride and really seemed designed to react and adapt quickly to road irregularities and obstacles. The hydraulic-assisted power steering made manoeuvring the Tacoma a breeze, and powerful braking (ventilated discs, rear drums) kept this driver confident while barrelling through the increasingly sloppy conditions of the required test loop. The new Tacoma’s interior was simple and tidy, but included innovative accessories like wireless charging capabilities and a standard GoPro camera mount affixed to the windshield. Conclusions As there were only three entrants in the pickup category this year, all three managed to make it to the semi-finals, but I suspect that the new Tacoma will come home with the hardware in February, when the winner is announced in Toronto. The wait for a new Tacoma has been long, so Toyota made sure that this latest iteration is well-sorted, equipped for the masses, and designed around the model’s near legendary reputation for reliability and durability. I suspect that the diesel engine in the Canyon will help keep the race close, but the Toyota will be the one to beat.

Story by John Harwood n Canada, as winter approaches, the trees lose their leaves and the frost on the ground becomes a frozen tundra. The igloos are getting their last-minute repairs, and families take inventory of emergency rations, supplies, pets and children. Soon, the snow will fall and those unprepared will be in for a hard four months! For the fortunate few, the subculture of Canadiana collectively known as the Snowbirds, the calling to fly south flocking to warmer climates is as welcomed as Christmas itself.

I

While most Snowbirds are content with hanging out poolside in their Adirondack chairs with drink in hand and a full belly of allinclusive grub, a very dedicated team of Canadian desert racers are making last minute preparations for the biggest race of their young careers. They are the Graf Racing Team from Red Deer, Alberta, and they will challenge the Nevada desert, some of the best drivers and teams in desert racing and, most importantly, themselves in the 2015 BITD Henderson 250, presented by Supercross.com., December 4th-6th 2015 at Henderson, Nevada. The team has had a great season, and a strong finish will ensure a top spot in the overall season championship. Graf Racing are only in their second full season in the Trophy Truck class in The Best in the Desert BITD racing series. This December, the team will be fighting for a top spot in the seasonlong championship points series. The team has had great success this year and are currently sitting in third place after finishing fifth in The Bluewater Desert Challenge in Parker, AZ this past October. The Graf Trophy truck is a Racer Engineering beast with an 860-horsepower Dougans powerplant hooked up 48 Trucks Plus

OFF-ROADING to a Rancho race transmission. The BFG tires tear up race courses with ease. The driving style of team owner and driver of record Tracy Graf is extreme, to say the least! The truck literally flies down the course like an out-of-control missile, sometimes sideways, sometimes almost upside down, but always flying in the direction of the finish line. It’s a style reminiscent of Baja Legend Robby Gordon. Tracy shares driving duties with Justin Bean Smith. Justin is a journeyman desert racer who understands all aspects of race trucks, from building them to racing them. In fact, Graf Racing moved their operations centre to Justin’s shop JBS Motorsports in Las Vegas in 2014, and Justin is the team manager. Here, they prep the truck before each race and make any changes mechanical guru and the other Justin at JBS, Justin Joren, deems necessary. In the co-driver’s seat is B.C.’s Curtis Warner, an experienced Ultra 4 driver in his own right, with many miles raced for Graf Racing. Curtis could almost be called driver’s manager. It is his talents that keep Tracy’s extreme driving style in check, making sure the team keeps the balance between speed and preserving the truck. He is responsible for tire changes and communicating with Tommy about fuel needs at pit stops, as well as any mechanical issues they may have.

OFF-ROADING

The team is doing really well this year. When asked about their success this season, Graf attributes much of it to the move to the JBS shop last year. “In early 2014, we moved to Justin “Bean” Smith’s shop and our program progressed significantly throughout the year. We made a lot of significant changes to the TT and the Graf Racing program in terms of building a solid team and a fleet of chase vehicles.” The team is sitting in fourth spot overall for the Camburg award. This is an award for finishing every mile of every race with the fastest average speed. Tracy explained that one of the reasons the average speed is up is due to team communication. “Curtis and I also developed, both in our individual roles but also as a team inside the race truck.” We asked Graf about the upcoming BITD Henderson 250. “Our goal is to get a top-five finish in this race and see where everyone else finishes. Then see where the overall points end up when everyone’s worst points race is deducted from their total.” 52 Trucks Plus

With only a few weeks until the BITD Henerdson 250, a young Canadian desert racing team is preparing for a milestone in their evolution. They have built a strong program and it is really paying

off. They overcame some obstacles in their early years and are now competing with the very best desert racers out there. With a good outcome in this race, they will be recognized as a force to be reckoned with next season. For the 18 members and volunteers of the Graf Racing Team, there won’t be any sitting around poolside in their Adirondack chairs sipping on Crown Royal. The 2016 season starts in January and these Snowbirds plan on being faster and better than ever!

wo bedrooms, two Queen Beds; not what I was expecting in a bunkhouse trailer. I’d seen the BH, or bunkhouse, in the model code and expected a normal set of bunk beds. Sometimes there are even three beds in a space set aside for kids – but two Queen Beds? As I investigated further, the design philosophy of the Wildwood line emerged to explain this variation in a phrase Forest River uses in its brochures - “Family Affordability.” My take on it is mid-market pricing for the largest trailer with the most options possible at that family price. This is not to say that all builders don’t want to hit this ideal, but past this, I found a particularly nice variety of floorplans to cover most every “family” dynamic. Looking at the 21 layouts (travel trailer and fifth-wheel), you’ll find sleeping arrangements for up to ten, or as few as two. In fact, this last unit (in several versions) has just one bedroom and the rest of the trailer is a huge open living area. Yes, there is always at least one fold-out couch for the folks who unexpectedly visit, but when you buy a unit like this, you probably didn’t want them to stay long anyway. As for the travel trailer I tried, I’ve wondered who’d buy it. After a few hours of testing, here is my theory. Mom and Dad are older, perhaps semi-retired, and camp with adult, married children who are happy to visit because they get grown-up sleeping accommodation. Or, Mom and Dad, on the road, occasionally entertain friends who don’t want to re-live their sleep-away camp years. For them, an overnight stay is private and without stress. Either way, Wildwood designers should get props for offering unique camping solutions for all our Modern Families. I mentioned space earlier; it’s first found in the length of these units (range from 29 to 39 feet), which have up to three slideouts and with extra inches added to areas such as around beds, 54 Trucks Plus

RV-ING extra large pot/pan drawers, and deep overhead cabinets. Storage throughout the trailer interior is extensive; however, there are also two exterior pass-through cargo spaces. At each end of my tester, passing under the queen-beds, were sizable spaces each with a 20x30-inch door. These lock and have good weather seals. Speaking of weather, the Wildwood is billed as a 3-1/2 seasoncapable trailer. That’s a new one on me, but I get that Forest River is suggesting that they’ve gone a bit further with the cold weather proofing on these units. While the trailer is a traditional stick and tin build, it does add strength with a 5/8-inch tongue & groove plywood floor supporting it all. To fend off wet weather, the slide-outs all have triple seals, the outside walls carry 0.24-inch aluminum siding, and above it all is a one-piece seamless SuperFlex roof covering (that can be walked on). Another important feature is protection for fresh water and waste water tanks. These are enclosed underneath the unit, and those compartments are heated. For insulation, the two-inch wall construction contains R-7 fibreglass insulation throughout. For heating, the trailer offers a floor-ducted 25,000 BTU forced air furnace, while cooling comes from a roof-mounted 13,500 BTU air conditioner which cools through ceiling diffusers. A neat feature on this model is a sliding glass patio door that enters the living room right across from the single large slide-out. There is also a rear entry man-door which accesses the back bedroom and its adjacent bathroom. Looking at the trailer from outside, you can see that it would lend itself to a semi-permanent site where a deck could easily be added to below the patio door (with the large awning covering everything).

This would be the main in and out with the rear door used for cutting down on traffic to the bathroom. But, this is just an option as the trailer tows well and handles nicely on the road. This is not a park model – it just could be. The dry weight on this Wildwood is 7,600 lb and I towed it with a new 2015 all-aluminum Ford F150 equipped with the very new 2.7litre EcoBoost V6 engine. I also towed it without an equalizing hitch. I am not saying it doesn’t need one – I just didn’t have an opportunity to get one for the test. I would imagine that with it, the tow would be even better than I experienced even though without that equalizing hitch, the trailer and truck attitude was still reasonably level. No doubt this is a function of well-placed axles. Each of the wheels on the Wildwood has electric brakes and these worked with the Ford’s integrated trailer brake controller and slowed the trailer well even at highway speeds. While the weight of this trailer did put the Ford to work, it felt very controlled and stable. I also noted that despite a fairly high-sided attitude, crosswinds created very minimal buffeting. The only caution I’ll offer is that with a travel trailer of this length, tail-swing is a concern, but only if you forget to allow for it in turns. Lastly, the 2.7 V6 (325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque) is surprisingly strong for a motor this size. And, when not towing, the mileage with this engine is impressive too. Ford has done well with this one. Inside, the decor creates a look that’s homey yet upscale. The focal point of the trailer, as I said, is that large patio door across from the couch in the slideout. This design is not only roomy, but creates a sitting area with a view – just park it somewhere nice. The other half of the slide is taken up with a good-sized dinette across from the 58 Trucks Plus

kitchen. This kitchen will handle meals for families, big or small, starting with the residential-style refrigerator next to the threeburner high-output range with oven. Above it is a microwave with carousel built-in over the range hood with its exhaust fan and light. The large deep basin sink is set at an angle to create more counter space and features a gooseneck faucet. Glass-fronted cupboards are a nice touch, while under-counter storage is ample. For flooring, the Wildwood offers money-saving linoleum that mimics wide-plank wood. This is found in all high-traffic areas, bathroom and bedrooms, while carpet is found only in the flat-floor slideout. On the side of the kitchen cupboard (just as you walk-in through the patio door) is a handy device – a command centre for all the trailer systems. Also, the builder has given the customer wall switch controls in key locations (for each room) that control the 12V overhead lights (some of them). This is a convenience feature added to very basic lighting. The bathroom in this unit does its best to offer extras, with little things like a toothbrush holder and towel ring, wooden medicine cabinet with a mirrored door, and a vinyl tub surround. With doors on either side, it is also private to the rear bedroom but accessible to guests from the kitchen side through another hard door. Overall, it’s a little light in its amenities, but again Forest River adds a perk with a 16-gallon per hour quick recovery water heater. On the other hand, if you want a skylight over the shower – that’s optional. After an afternoon with the Wildwood, I saw amenities and construction that worked to keep overall costs down. For instance, many powered items, which many trailers carry as standards, are optional on the Wildwood, leaving the choice to add cost (or not) up to the buyer. *(see the options list at the end of the story for examples of these). However, the designers also picked items of importance and added value to those. Specifically, I saw that come into play where long-term inside usage would be appreciated and outside weather protection was needed. This is a trailer that has middle-of-the-road pegged. But, the variety and ingenuity of the floorplans are anything but. These deserve a look. 60 Trucks Plus
