Ford Introduces Refreshed 2018 F-150 with New Engine Options
F
ord used the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Michigan to unveil the updated and refreshed 2018 F-150 halfton pickup that they say is even tougher, smarter and more capable than ever. All models will receive new grilles, headlamps and bumpers that create a wider and more aggressive appearance. Also on the exterior are six new wheel designs that range from 17 to 22 inches, new tail lamp designs, and a new sculpted tailgate. The ‘18 F-150 will come out with many new segment-first features such as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, an embedded 4G LTE modem for a Wi-Fi hotspot, and pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection. Under the hood, a new 3.3-litre V6 engine replaces the outgoing 3.5-litre V6 as the standard unit and is expected to offer the same horsepower and torque as its predecessor. A second-generation 2.7-litre EcoBoost engine will be offered as well and, just like the larger 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine, will be paired to a 10-speed automatic Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
transmission. The 5.0-litre V8 option also sees some improvements but perhaps the biggest news of all when it comes to the new F-150 is the introduction of an all-new 3.0-litre Power Stroke diesel engine that will also be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. Additionally the F-150 is now the first full-size pickup to add automatic start/stop as standard equipment across all models and engines. The 2018 Ford F-150 will hit dealer showrooms in the fall.

Dee Zee Celebrates 40 Year Anniversary Dee Zee is one of the leading manufacturers in the light truck accessory market, and is proud to announce that it is celebrating its 40th anniversary here in 2017. The company began way back in 1977, when it started to manufacture its first set of running boards. The company attended its first SEMA trade show with just a pickup load worth of products, and happily returned with a large batch of orders, with more on the way. Initially, Dee Zee’s first product line consisted of twelve different running board models made of Brite Tread or extruded aluminum, with the goal back then being to produce enough boards to keep the doors open for business. Just a few short years after that, Dee Zee would be turning out more than a thousand running boards a day, in addition to several related product lines. Today, the company’s business is balanced between OEM and aftermarket sales, and due to this combination, Dee Zee has been able to weather economic downturns and has continued to grow and expand. Its OEM partners include some of the largest automotive brands in the world, and its aftermarket business has expanded beyond running boards to include tool boxes, fuel transfer tanks, bed protection, cargo management and many other truck accessories.

Ford Officially Announces the Return of the Ranger and Bronco to North America After what has seemed like months and possibly years of speculation, Ford has made it official by announcing the return of both the Ranger mid-size pickup and Bronco mid-size SUV to the North American market starting in 2019 for the Ranger and 2020 for the Bronco. Little is currently known about either returning model right now, but it is expected that the models will share a platform. The Ranger is still currently being sold in other markets besides North America, and it is speculated that we here will get the next-generation model in time for its debut. Ford last produced the Ranger here in North America back in 2011, and given the current resurgence of the mid-size pickup market, it certainly seems to be coming at the right time. The Bronco has long been gone as it was last produced by Ford in 1996, but it still maintained a kind of cult following, especially in the off-road world.
FCA Issued Notice of Violation Regarding EcoDiesel Engine Recently, the EPA (United States Environmental Protection Agency) has issued a notice of violation against FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) that states that the company has violated the Clean Air Act for installing and failing to disclose engine management software. The software is said to increase emissions of nitrogen oxides from the vehicles. The EPA has stated that emission control devices aren’t illegal but rather installing them without disclosing them to the EPA is. According to Autoblog, since the announcement of the violation was announced, law firms from both the US and Canada have launched class action lawsuits on behalf of owners. Also reported is that FCA could see up to $45,000 per vehicle which depends on the outcome of the EPA investigation. FCA has apparently denied that the devices were meant for ‘cheating’ purposes and has already proposed software updates to bring the vehicles back into compliance. It will be interesting to see if these allegations and subsequent lawsuits will have the same impact that Volkswagen experienced when similar allegations were made against them back in 2015.

here are a lot of choices when it comes to aftermarket bumpers, and a lot depends on the make and model of your vehicle. Most pickup truck owners generally start looking for a replacement bumper because they require more lights to see better, or a winch to pull themselves out if they get stuck. With today’s technology, LED lights are all the rage and when it comes to off-road lighting, you need the latest bumpers to provide protected mounting points. Here are just a few models to give you a good cross-section of what’s available to today’s consumer looking to upgrade their rig’s armour. The new Dee Zee by Kelderman front and rear bumpers offer built-in mounts to fit a variety of LED lights. The front bumper also has a centre slot to accommodate a 22-in. light bar and heavy-duty shackles to work with a tow strap. The optional winch plate can be used for up to a 16,500-lb winch. The rear bumpers have two notches cut out to provide a step on each corner to help bed access. These bumpers are built for extreme duty and would look good on any new truck. N-fab is one of the leaders in cutting edge design. These master fabricators create very unique bumpers and tube products for your vehicle. If you enjoy watching the desert race trucks compete and want that look for your own truck, then check out n-fab.com. They offer a variety of pre-runner front bumpers that are both functional and stylish. Enough space to mount most off-road lights and strong enough to protect against any brush you may encounter on the back roads. With a wide range of products and applications, they are sure to have the right fit for your vehicle. Road Armor bumpers are armour for your truck. There are some unique differences with these bumpers. They provide areas for light bars but move the lights in the bumper a little further back, giving a bit more protection while allowing the light to still function. The full grill guard is beefy and gives your truck an aggressive look. Anchor points for shackles and an area for winch fitment are standard. A new take on the Texas-style full bumper called Vaquero provides a true cowboy look. Iron Cross bumpers are designed to contour the space previously occupied by your original bumper. They are shaped well and fit very nicely, leaving the smallest gaps possible. A slot is provided for a hawse fairlead or a roller fairlead, and mounting plate to fit up to a 16,500-lb winch. The logo is cut into the bumper using a CNC machine for a clean look; which also provides airflow while driving. Matching HD rear bumpers are also available. Smittybilt has been building bumpers since the late ‘70s and if you are a Jeep JK owner, you probably have seen one or two around your neighbourhood. There are endless designs available for Jeeps. plicated rock crawling bumpers. The XRC bumper features a winch mount with a raised light bar. The bumper is designed to give you maximum clearance with improved approach angles for four wheeling. Two shackle mounts provide a strong anchor point to pull or drag your Jeep from most sticky situations. Driving up to the cabin or working on rough terrain around your own farm can often mean encountering something along the way that you may not normally expect. Every once in a while, something will ‘jump up’ and smash that expensive grill, or worse yet, poke a hole through your radiator. Steelcraft has produced the bumper that will keep you protected. This bumper features a full grille guard that has mesh in the centre and wrap-around headlight protectors. The lower portion of this bumper is a bulletproof, schedule 40 pipe, contoured steel bumper that has light provisions and front receiver mount that will accept a portable winch… not to mention mow down just about anything that comes in your way. Check them out at steelcraftautomotive.com. There is no right or wrong when it comes to choosing a bumper. It all boils down to the particular application and what you use that rig of yours for. Looking through your favourite enthusiast publications, dropping into your local aftermarket retailer, or checking out some manufacturers’ sites online is a good starting point. Find something that suits your needs and appeals to you. Make your truck your own personal statement.

Dee Zee Teams with Kelderman
SEMA Show Trucks Highlight New Product Offerings
D
ee Zee is known for building durable, functional, and stylish products for today’s trucks. From tool boxes to running boards, transfer tanks to cab racks, they offer a wide range of products. Until 2016, the Des Moines, Iowa manufacturer hadn’t ventured into the bumper market. With a wide range of bumpers already on the market, Dee Zee knew that they would need to differentiate themselves to consumers in order to be successful. This is where Kelderman Manufacturing enters the picture. While Kelderman has built a reputation on their air suspension systems and custom truck accessories, the two companies soon found they had a lot in common and a partnership was formed to make front and rear pickup truck bumpers with a subtle, yet aggressive look. The Dee Zee by Kelderman Front and Rear Bumpers represent one tough line of defence for today’s off-road truck. These bumpers are designed to allow truck owners to customize them by adding lighting, tow hooks and winches onto a one-piece construction made from heavy-duty steel for serious strength. Both the front and rear bumpers include cutout openings on each side for standardized
LED light pods, plus a centre opening on the front bumper for up to a 20-inch light bar. For heavy-duty vehicles, the front bumpers include one-inch-thick shackle mounts, plus there is a winch plate available so that truck owners can add up to a 16,500-lb. winch. The product line offers light- and heavy-duty applications for the Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra, Ford F150, and Ram trucks. The two trucks featured were built to showcase Dee Zee’s new bumper line, along with products from their toolbox, running boards, transfer tanks and cargo management product lines. As part of the new Dee Zee and Kelderman Bumper venture, the trucks were featured in both manufacturers’ booths at the 2016 SEMA show in Las Vegas, NV in November. While in the area, they decided to take advantage of the location and did the photo shoot you see here. Local photographer Adam Shane photographed the trucks in the mountains near Mt. Charleston Lodge and a dry lake bed near El Dorado Canyon. Shawn Shulz is the proud owner of the 2016 Ram 2500 HD that is featured in this article. Shawn’s truck is outfitted with many additional

accessories, making it ideal for taking on road trips out West, and then off-road when wanting more adventure. It features the new front and rear bumpers with a Rigid light bar and pods. The front bumper has a Dee Zee winch plate with a Bulldog Alpha Series winch plus Factor 55 Flatlink/Hawse Fairlead winch accessory. This truck gets extra lift from a Kelderman 5-6-in. air suspension, with a Hadley Touchscreen controller for easy functionality. The extra height from the suspension means side steps are a must and this truck is equipped with Dee Zee 6-in. Black-Tread Side Steps. The truck’s logo graphic was designed by Arctic FX Graphics and was applied to the entire truck as a wrap. The wheels are Aero 22x12 wheels from American Force, with Baja ATZ 36-in. tires from Mickey Thompson. A Magnaflow 5-in. exhaust system delivers the sound and power you’d expect from a build like this. The truck bed and the bottom of the truck are coated by Ultimate Linings, and the bed is outfitted with a custom-fit heavyweight bed mat for added protection. A textured-black aluminum Truck Rack helps to protect the rear of the pickup cab and includes tie-down anchors and an accessory channel too, for light installation. Inside the truck bed is a Dee Zee Red Label Crossover Tool Box, perfect for storing extra gear and tools. An L-shape transfer tank in matching black tread fits perfectly under the toolbox.

The white truck is a 2016 Chevy Silverado 3500 HD crew cab with 6.5-ft box. The owner is Jordan McCann, who works for Earl’s Tires West and partnered with Dee Zee to help build this truck. The Chevy also features the new Dee Zee by Kelderman front and rear bumpers, custom painted white to match the truck. The bumpers are also outfitted with a Rigid light bar and pods. The white-on-white graphic design with the Dee Zee logo is subtle and goes along with the all-white look of the truck, which makes the candy red wheels from Fuel Off-Road really stand out. The tires are again supplied by Mickey Thompson. This truck gets extra height from a Kelderman 6-8-in. air suspension, also in candy apple red, and is equipped with 6-in. Oval Side Steps (in texture black) which give Jordan and his passenger a step up into the cab. All other accessories are also black, including the MagnaFlow exhaust system. The truck bed is outfitted with a Dee Zee aluminum truck rack and low profile Red Label crossover tool box, both in textured black. The company’s Tailgate Assist was also installed to provide added safety by controlling the drop rate of the tailgate, while helping to extend its longevity.

COMPARISION: HONDA RIDGELINE
Old vs. New

still compared with pickups rather than the sport utility vehicles it has more in common with.
L
I became interested in putting a Ridgeline of my own in the driveway after spending time behind the wheel of a number of test units when it was first introduced, and I finally pulled the trigger on an EX-L model in 2009. It was this model year where the truck received its first refresh - which included a mild facelift, revised instrument cluster, as well as additional comfort and convenience features.
ike many first-generation Honda Ridgeline owners, I have been looking forward to the long-awaited introduction of the second generation of the Japanese company’s only pickup offering since the previous version ceased production in 2014. The Ridgeline is unique in the truck world, as it offers half-ton capabilities in a more compact package, one that is better suited for the casual truck user than those needing a heavy-duty platform for work or hard play. The product planners at Honda often refer to the Ridgeline as a Sport Utility Truck (SUT) which helps differentiate from more traditional designs, but unfortunately, the Ridgeline is
My lifestyle didn’t require a large truck, but I often found myself needing to haul motorcycles, sporting equipment and other household items on occasion, tasks that I knew the Ridgeline could readily do. As the vehicle would spend the majority of time commuting back and forth to the big city, its smaller footprint would be better suited for navigating through urban environments and slipping into tight spots when parking. My experience with the test units left me impressed with the comfort, smooth ride and obvious quality offered by the Ridgeline. Honda’s decision to build the vehicle using a unibody platform and fully independent suspension (design features more akin to the construction of cars than trucks) made it handle with a level of precision lacking in its more traditional rivals, and also helped it stand out from the crowd.
2009 Model 22 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
While this unique design did little to attract buyers away from the more established and traditional truck manufacturers, it did help Honda carve out a niche of its own. A loyal bunch, the Ridgeline owners I surveyed preferred the sport utility-like ride offered by this new player, and clever features like the two-way tailgate and in-bed storage box made it a pleasure to use for family activities and household hauling. The latter is also a blessing in the winter, as it allows you
2017 Model
2009 Model to discretely add a little weight to the backend to aid in traction on slippery roads. I recently spent a week behind the wheel of the new Ridgeline, a topof-the-line Black Edition. Prior to rolling into showrooms, Honda had been releasing partial views of the truck on the internet in an effort to generate some buzz for the vehicle. These images revealed that the design team had decided to drop the original truck’s integrated cargo box design and elected to fit the vehicle with a separate cargo box, in hopes of giving it a more truck-like appearance with hopes this move would widen its customer base. However, once the truck was revealed, reactions were mixed. When viewed from the rear, the new model looked more like a truck (and in fact, very much like most of its rivals) due to the rather cookie-cutter cargo box, but from the front, it looked more like a CR-V. In effect, less like a truck. After having spotted the chiseled nose of the new Ridgeline peeking out of my garage, one of my neighbours called me to ask how I liked
my new Pilot, the corporate sister with which the Ridgeline shares many of its new mechanical, safety and trim components. Mind you, there have been some modifications (especially to the suspension) to permit the Ridgeline to handle increased loads. This is not a bad thing, as the Pilot is a tremendous vehicle, but it should stand as evidence that the new Ridgeline looks even more like a sport utility vehicle than a pickup truck. The Ridgeline (new and old) operates largely as a front-wheel drive vehicle, but the On Demand four-wheel drive system engages as needed without interference from the driver. As an avid outdoorsman, I tend to travel off the beaten path on a regular basis, so I appreciate the fact that at lower speeds, the rear differential can be locked at the touch of a button if the terrain gets challenging or the weather flares up. This latter feature is missing from the new truck, but its allwheel drive system offers the driver the ability to select from multiple terrain settings to best equip the vehicle for the conditions. There are dedicated settings for tackling mud, sand and snow, but given that this latest model has less ground clearance than its forbear, only light-duty off-roading should ever be on the agenda.
FEB/MAR 2017 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 23
The Ridgeline’s cabin is roomy enough for five adults, and large cubbies and storage bins are in abundance. Having the shift lever mounted to the steering column allowed Honda designers to create a very clever expandable centre console with arm rest on first gen units, but the new model places the shift lever on the centre console with the redesign. This move puts the look, feel, and use much more in line with that of SUVs and crossovers with which most consumers are more familiar. Despite the fact that the new truck has a longer wheelbase (up 3.46 in.), this doesn’t equate to more room. In fact, I found the passenger cabin to be smaller than that of the original, most notably with regards to headroom. Front legroom is down marginally on the new truck, but front seat occupants will feel more confined than before due to the design of the new centre console. The rear seating area looks familiar, as the rear cushions of the comfy bench seat (60/40 split design) still fold up against the back wall to create enough space to carry a couple of mountain bikes and associated gear. Legroom is up a mere seven millimetres in the rear compartment, and most averagesized adults should feel comfortable for all but the longest journeys. When I returned the Honda press vehicle, I parked it alongside my own, and with the help of a tape measure, I was surprised to discover that the door openings all round are narrower than before. This didn’t have much effect on ingress and egress for front passengers, as the doors are still quite substantial in width. However, the same cannot be said for the rear doors, which my quick and dirty measurements revealed a reduction of almost ten inches to the widest open position, which greatly reduces the ability to load / unload bulky items into the rear seating area. This is quite the loss, as the rear doors on the previous model swung open almost a full 90 degrees. The second-generation Ridgeline does gain some points in the utility department, as the cargo bed is slightly longer and wider than that of the first-generation truck, although it is more shallow. However, its flat top will make it much better suited for affixing racks, canopies and tonneau covers than before. From the outside, the Ridgeline’s direct-injected, high-revving engine emits a pleasant roar, but from the cabin, this thing is quiet! The Ridgeline may be the perfect vehicle for those consumers looking for the luxury, safety and comfort of a sport utility or crossover, but who do not need a third row of seats. Instead, they get the ride
more durable and scratch-resistant. The novel in-bed trunk is still present - albeit almost 33-litres smaller. The various truck manufacturers have long made towing capacity the key to the light truck arms race, but the Ridgeline’s design prevents it from winning any awards in this category. With a towing capacity of 2,268 kilograms, the Ridgeline is more than capable of towing small trailers and boats, which should suffice for the needs of most individuals considering this rig. I have nine friends and acquaintances who own first-generation Ridgelines, and all were excited when they heard that a new model was on the way. The common hope was that it would retain most of the SUT’s clever features and unique styling cues, but that it would feature the latest in technology and safety equipment, as well as improved fuel economy. I am happy to report that Honda has moved the interior up a notch, and the quality, look and feel throughout is much more upmarket, as is the level of advanced safety technology. However, my fuel economy wasn’t significantly better than that of the prior model. Mind you, the 2017 Ridgeline has more horsepower and torque
and trappings associated with the modern luxury utility vehicle but with the added convenience of an external cargo bed for hauling household items, building supplies, and recreational gear in a more urban friendly size. I should also point out that the 2017 Honda Ridgeline was awarded the Truck of the Year title at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, but when a minivan (Chrysler Pacifica) wins the Utility Vehicle of the Year title (a category that the Ridgeline is probably better suited for), it shows how muddled the various automotive categories have become.

TOWING: INTEGRATED TRAILER SYSTEMS
A New Partnership
Chevrolet Joins Trailer Builders to Create Integrated Systems Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of GM Canada
M
ost RVers are well aware that the truck manufacturers and the RV builders rarely talk. By that, I mean each industry watches what the other is doing and then builds something they “think” will work with what the other guy built. If that sounds silly, it’s because it is, and frankly, for industry watchers like myself, it’s been a question I’ve put to the representatives many times – as in – “when are you guys going to start working together?”
Well, at a recent GM truck event in Texas, I was pleasantly surprised when one of the reps I’ve nagged over the years approached me to say that this year it was going to happen. Specifically, Chevrolet is partnering with the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) and the National Association of Trailer Manufacturers (NATM) to create a more integrated trailering experience. “Safety and ease of use are key considerations for families that use RV trailers,” said Bruce Hopkins, RVIA Vice President, Standards. “We’re pleased to partner with Chevrolet and NATM on this project to create a safer, simpler and easier towing experience.” By working directly with the industry, Chevrolet will help trailer manufacturers develop technologies that improve combined trailer and truck safety and industry safety standards. The partners will also work to increase communication between truck and trailer to provide the driver with more information and help alert customers to prevent trailer tampering or theft. Simply put, the relationship between truck and trailer

can now move past how much weight can it tow, to being an intelligent trailer that “talks” to the truck. This means better braking, sway control, tire monitoring and video coverage. This last one promises to be big. Trailers (much like trucks being built today) can easily have cameras mounted on all sides and at the rear; however, the truck must be wired to accept those video feeds and then

have the right controls and screens to display the images in the cab. There is no better place to do this wiring than at the factory, and to accomplish this in each new truck, the two industries have to agree on a common platform and tell each other what they are doing, so when the connector is plugged in, everything works. That’s what this new partnership promises to do. This is good news for every RVer. Well done, Chevrolet.

FEATURE: MID-SIZE TRUCK MARKET
Mid-Size Trucks Gaining Ground in Canada

anada’s love affair with the ever-dependable pickup truck continues to grow, with total sales jumping eight percent during the 2016 calendar year. “Automakers sold around 1.95 million units in Canada last year, up about three percent from another record year in 2015,” said Allison Lampert of Reuters in Montreal. There’s no denying the Great White North is full-size truck country, and most are Built Ford Tough®. “F-Series sales jumped 22 percent to an all-time annual high, a gain of 26,572 units compared with 2015,” said author of Best-Selling Pickup Trucks In Canada

- 2016 Year End, Timothy Cain. No surprise here, the company also secured the top spot on Kanetix.ca’s list of Top 10 Trucks in Canada. “The Ford F-Series pickup truck is not only the bestselling truck in Canada, but it’s the best-selling vehicle, period. In 2016, it was the only vehicle in Canada to break the 100,000 sold achievement.” That’s great, but what may pique your interest is that four smaller, more affordable, just-as-shiny crown jewels landed on the Top 10 list as well. The feisty Toyota Tacoma reigned king of the mid-size truck market during 2016 and placed fifth overall against some hefty full-size competition. Chevy Colorado took seventh place on the same list and locked down runner-up status against its respective market-leader, the Tacoma. GMC Canyon, the mid-size segment’s only luxuryinspired truck, came in eighth overall and placed third behind the Colorado. And a newly redesigned, highly anticipated 2017 Honda Ridgeline snagged fourth among its fellow competition, edging out the Nissan Frontier for the tenth place spot. That’s an admirable feat for shorter body frames cast in the shadows of giants like the Ford F-Series, Ram 1500, GMC Sierra, Chevy Silverado, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan. Although the top four full-size trucks outsell its entire junior sector, an 8.5-percent market share increase in mid-size truck sales during 2016 presents a positive outlook. “The modern mid-size truck is the old full size,” said Ryan Osborne, Product Manager

at FX Products. He discussed how decades of research and development have resulted in sophisticated platform advancements. No doubt the bar has been raised for midsize pickups, as they’ve certainly graduated since the first Dodge Dakota graced dealer lots back in 1980’s. “Sustainability within the segment can be attributed to a variety of upgrades, including appealing aesthetics, progressive technology, improved safety feature ratings, enhanced performance, impressive on- and off-road capabilities, and better fuel economy,” commented Osborne. While OE’s aren’t interested in converting more expensive full-size truck sales to its less-expensive counterpart, “the expansion of features, performance, and safety ratings of mid-size trucks may actually attract buyers away from the full-size category,” said Mike McLaughlin of UnderCover. Practical for everyday use, intermediate towing and enthusiast-based activities, mid-size pickups are attracting new truck owners at an astonishing rate. Best of all, they perform well for general recreation and general contracting alike. Now consumers have a reasonably priced entry-level truck option that doesn’t require sacrifice of the creature comforts they’ve become accustomed to in a car, crossover, or SUV. “The idea is to grow the pie and attract new truck buyers who may be intimidated by, or simply don’t require, larger trucks. Mid-size trucks are easier to manage and maintain and with the new features and amenities, they

options so that any truck can stand out in a sea of others. And automotive industry leaders believe Canada is ripe with opportunity in the mid-size truck market, despite some economic wobbles in 2016. Make no mistake, these manufacturers are laser-focused on year-over-year growth within the Canadian truck market and are chomping at the bit to help drivers customize their ride with functional and fashionable upgrades in every price point. Lift it, style it, lower it, tune it, cover it, tow it, maintain it. Personalize the driving experience, from low-profile front end or truck bed protection, steps or boards, level kits, and vehicle protection to trendy wheels, cargo storage, 4x4 accessories, and more. Even traditional performance kings like K&N, aFe Power, Airaid, MBRP, MagnaFlow, Flowmaster, and Gibson have found their niche within this relatively new, yet booming, mid-size market. These companies are investing in the platform’s longevity by producing new products and expanded applications each year.
are an attractive option to enter into a big truck market,” added Charly Henley of BAK Industries. Take the 2017 Honda Ridgeline, for example. “That’s a standout truck because its market appears to be comprised heavily of previous Honda car owners. While it performs like a truck, it has a certain automotive feel to it,” added Henley. And those enhanced amenities Henley speaks of are plentiful in the updated platform. From an available 150W/400W outlet housed in the wall of the bed to charge power tools or plug in a TV, to the lockable, 7.3 cu. ft. In-Bed Trunk® that includes a drain plug, so owners can use it as an ice chest or a place to store wet gear without compromising bed utility. Listen to your favourite music outside with the industry’s first truck bed audio system, which uses the bed walls to pump out the tunes. Or prepare to be amazed with a clever tailgate that not only drops down, but also swings open toward the driver’s side like an old-fashioned station wagon, for improved access. As practical and sophisticated as these mid-size gems are right off the dealer lot, the aftermarket offers countless customization

And given their significant appeal, mid-size trucks have become a more family-friendly choice as well. Timmons believes that consumers are willing to make a compromise: larger, more luxurious truck cab features for the trade off of a slightly smaller bed. “The smaller bed actually is more convenient, and with a hard folding
Tuning company Hypertech is ahead of the curve as well, anticipating late-model, mid-size trucks to continue in an upward trajectory. Consumers can increase the performance and fuel efficiency of their pickups without having to spend extra money on engine or drivetrain upgrades. “The Max Energy 2.0 Power Programmer for the 2015-2016 Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon with the 3.6L direct-injected V-6 engine is a great example. The Max Energy programmer provides a gain of 13 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. The benefit of the engine tuning is more power for passing, improved acceleration, enhanced throttle response and less downshifting at part throttle,” said Chris Crecelius of Hypertech. From under the hood to the back of the truck, “The rise of the midsize truck simply has given us more vehicle models to introduce our product lines to, consequently diversifying and expanding our customer base,” said Kevin Cislo at Extang. “Not only are these trucks a nice complement to the full-size market, but also are used just as much and many times just as hard as its full-size counterpart. These owners benefit from products like BAKFlip or RevolverX2 bed covers, too, so they can maximize their use of bed space,” Charly Henley concurs.
or roll-up bed cover, it’s really the perfect solution for busy, active families. You can store a lot of smelly hockey gear back there!” added Timmons.
The top two mid-size trucks, Tacoma and Colorado, also happen to be best-selling vehicle models for Mike Timmons at BedRug. Even though OE’s have cannibalized many bedmat sales because of spray-in bedliners at the point of purchase, Timmons still sees bedmat sales growing at a very fast rate within the mid-size segment.
Don’t let the mid-sizers fool you. They may be compact, but they’re far from incapable. Confirmation of the Ford Ranger returning to North America, fluid concepts like the future Ram Rampage, and groundbreaking designs like the Honda Ridgeline continue to push the envelope, drive consumer demand, and inspire the aftermarket.

RV-ING: KEYSTONE AVALANCHE 320RS
Meeting a Benchmark Story and photos by Howard J Elmer While any travel trailer is, strictly speaking, living space, some units will make longer trips more comfortable than others. The Avalanche series of fifth-wheels from Keystone falls into this category. These trailers, often referred to as full-timers’ units, are built so that you could comfortably spend all winter, or all year for that matter, on the road in a trailer like this. Now, designing a trailer to meet a benchmark like that is no easy task if you consider that many full-timers have replaced a house and all its contents with a rolling retirement home. This puts a great deal of pressure on a trailer builder to provide the comforts of home in 400 (or so) square feet. This was my mindset when I picked up the Avalanche for a test late last fall. This series is made up of eight models varying in size from 34.5 to 40 feet. My test unit, new for 2017, is a floorplan designated 320RS and it’s this trailer that I towed with a new Duramax- powered Chevy Silverado 3500. In fact this truck (seen in the photos), was the winner of our HD one-ton segment during this year’s Canadian Truck King Challenge. If you’d like to know more about the truck and the fuel economy results we recorded please go to my website at www.canadiantruckkingchallenge.ca After a drive through the countryside northeast of Toronto, I stopped and opened up the slides in the Avalanche. There are three, twin-opposing slides in the main body and one in the bedroom. I noted the width of the trailer first (it’s a wide body at 100-inches closed) and also the height of the inside space at well over 7-feet. The clearance in the slides alone is 6’8”. Even the entry door is 6’ 4” tall and 30” wide. In fact, the trailer has an overall outside height of over 13-feet. This 50 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
standard also includes enclosed, heated tanks, and the temperature throughout the pass-through storage areas was recorded at 58 degrees during this test. So, while I imagine most owners of a unit like this will be a couple, guests are accommodated with a Hide-a-bed sofa sleeper that folds out at the rear of the trailer when need be. I mentioned the opposing slides in the body of the trailer; these create a huge living space when open. The passenger side slide houses a pair of reclining theatre seats opposite the flat screen TV over the electric fireplace, which is housed in the opposing slide. Beside it are the kitchen appliances. When it comes to the kitchen, I always think that I’d want to have as close to what I have at home in the way of amenities. Avalanche provides an 18-cubic foot refrigerator, full-size microwave and four-burner stove with an oven. There is even a built-in wine rack over the microwave. is actually a good way to increase inside space, as tall walls make for taller cabinets, and also lifts the basement storage for more room and easier access. Tall walls also give an opportunity to install bigger windows, and the Avalanche has them. Frameless automotive-style insulated tinted windows are as large as 60x48 inches. I particularly like the view from the free-standing dinette where the window starts at table height and reaches the ceiling in the slide. Because full-timers travel in all weather conditions throughout the year, all Avalanche trailers are built to what Keystone calls “Therma-Shield 37” standards. This makes the Avalanche four-season capable. Mind you, what does that really mean past the message that it will weather the cold? In the case of the Avalanche, independent testing by the Dometic Corporation was conducted to measure the consistency of the interior temperature from one end of the trailer to the other. They found it was within 3 degrees Fahrenheit when the thermostat was set at 74 degrees and the outside temperature was 4 degrees below Zero. This
For storage, there are the drawers and cupboards you’d expect; however, there is also a large full-size pantry with a hard door. Hardwood cabinetry throughout the Avalanche features hidden hinges and quite a bit of glass. That pantry door has an opaque insert as does the wall-mounted curio cabinet and tinted glass in the cabinets over the TV. The central kitchen island in the trailer is fixed and is the home to the sink and water faucet. This location makes it a focal point and the main prep surface that I’m sure will be in use constantly. The tall ceiling here also allows handsome hanging fixtures and a ceiling fan, not to mention the powered vent. House lighting is the LED type and nicely flush-mounted. This kitchen space is bracketed with a solid wood free-standing four-seat dinette in the opposite slide. The master bedroom in the nose of trailer is spacious and has good height. The 70 x 80-inch King Bed in this master has its head in the third slideout. This opens up walking space at the foot of the bed and also provides small windows on each side of the bed – nice for a crossbreeze.
FEB/MAR 2017 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 51
Also found opposite the bed is the second TV, which is built into a chest with a stone counter top. The front corner of the bedroom has a handsome cabinet dedicated to a washer/dryer setup. This bedroom also gets its own sliding door bathroom access, while a second hard door is off the hallway for daily or guest use. The bathroom, as you’d expect, is large; however, the size of the shower is still just a bit surprising. This floor-to-ceiling moulded stall has an integrated seat and ledge. Above, there is a full skylight and the translucent glass shower door makes for a bright space – open or closed. The sink is large, but the counter is not. Still, there is a full mirrored medicine cabinet and a built-in two-door linen closet in here. The toilet is porcelain and set at an angle in the corner, providing lots of elbow room on either side. Spend a lot of time on the road, and storage becomes a prime concern. Working my way through the trailer, I found a wide variety of spaces, most of which are well designed into the fixed cabinetry including under the lifting master bed. So, while this is to be expected, under the unit in the basement you’ll find over 145 cubic feet of space. Keystone has installed non-skid rubber diamond plate flooring in there. Doors are large and feature weather seals and “slam” latches. A full-timer typically spends weeks and months parked; however, they also tend to drive very long distances to get to and from their destinations. This means that the towing characteristics of a unit like the Avalanche are
52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
important. Always remember, a minor irritant on a weekend road trip can turn into a headache-inducing torment over several thousand miles. To this end, I first looked over a couple of features that will make the towing of this trailer easy and comfortable. It goes without saying that towing 36-feet of trailer demands as much manoeuvrability as possible. How much you’ve got is determined by the pin and nose design of the unit. In the case of the Avalanche, the pin is set far forward and the shape of the nose is tapered. According to Keystone, this offers as much as 30-percent better turning radius than some comparable units. This unit also uses the Trailair Rota-flex pin box, which featured rubberized shock

Test unit provided courtesy of Camping In Style, Whitby, ON. absorbers and a pivoting mechanism that soaks up the rough pitching of the trailer rather than transmitting it to the truck. I also noted there is also a backup mirror and light in the unit’s nose, and both are helpful. The other factor in a comfortable ride is the suspension and tires. A look at the axles and Dexter suspension on the Avalanche reveals upgraded 7,000-lb axles that are greaseable, have bronze bushings and bump absorption. The Nitrogen-filled tires are on bright eight-spoke wheels and feature 15-inch “G” load radial tires that support more weight than the “E” range tires found on many units in this size class. My test unit was fitted with the optional “one touch” auto level system. With six legs, this unit plants the trailer. It’s all operated from one location behind a locked exterior door. Also, the jacks operate in pairs, so there is no worry of twisted or bent shafts due to uneven lifting. When it comes to ride, the trailer design certainly has a lot to do with it – but then so does the truck. The Chevy 3500 had no problem with this load and its suspension was the other half of the great ride equation. All in all, a fine tow with a really nice trailer - both out on a sunny fall day. Makes me want to retire right about now.

2017 Action Expo
Story and photos by Dean Washington The annual Action Car and Truck Accessories Expo was recently held for the third year at the Toronto Congress Centre, and Trucks Plus was on hand to take in all the sights and sounds. What started out over a decade ago in the Action Moncton and Toronto area warehouses as an employee training session has transformed into a two-day training and product expo featuring over 75 vendors, hundreds of employees and Action customers from all parts of Action President John Chamberlaine and Director of Marketing Jason Wells
ment and particularly owner John Chamberlaine that his staff is the most important asset of the company. In his address at the company’s awards banquet with 370 people in attendance, much of his message was thanking and praising staff for the success of the company. The next day when we had the opportunity to catch up with him for a brief moment on the floor of the show his comments echoed the prior night’s when he said; “We as a company are only as good as our team and how our people interact with our customers. I truly believe we have the best staff in the industry”. That view was shared by many of the vendors on hand. The comment we heard on several occasions was that this shows intimate set-up gave them a great opportunity to speak directly to the sales and installation teams in a relaxed setting which they felt gave team members a better understanding of their products than if training had occurred at the stores, where there can be many distractions. We are definitely glad that we received the invitation to attend this closed to the public show as it also gave us a great opportunity to speak to manufactures about a lot of new products that we will be featuring in upcoming issues, and look forward to attending the event again next year.
the country. It is a “who’s who” of the industry as all the top aftermarket accessories companies were on display along with many incredible project vehicles. What we found really cool is that all managers, counter staff and installers from each of Actions 36 stores across Canada, come in for the training and show, so that when they get back to their respective stores, each team has the same understanding of the products they sell and how to present them best to their customers. This is one upbeat team. It was clear that to upper manage54 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2017
