Mercedes-Benz has been producing the popular G-Class for an unprecedented 35 years now, and although the overall look has remained the same, there have been plenty of upgrades over the years to keep the vehicle fresh. Recently, the German automaker announced it would be updating again, this time with a new V8 powerplant for the G500, a few new styling cues, and a new colour package. The new engine in the G500 is a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 based on high performance engines in the Mercedes-AMG GT and C63 lineup, which produces 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque. The G500 is the only model to receive a new engine, but the other engines in the lineup have been updated, as the G350d sees horsepower climb from 211 to 245 while the AMG G63 jumps from 536 to 563 hp. On the appearance side of things, the G350d and G500 models feature restyled bumpers and now-standard flared AMG wheel arches, colour-matched to the rest of the body. Customers wishing to give their AMG G-Class a more personal look now have exclusive exterior paint finishes to choose from, such as solar beam, tomato red, alien green, sunset beam and galactic beam.

THI Corporation Adds A.R.E Accessories to its Lineup

Tectum Holdings, Inc. (THI) recently announced the acquisition of A.R.E. Accessories to its family, making it the eighth acquisition on the THI platform. THI is a leading supplier of branded light-duty truck accessories for pickup truck bed applications. Since forming, the company has shown continuous growth and, via acquisition of two tonneau brands, into a diverse portfolio of seven major tonneau

cover brands and a premium bed liner brand. A.R.E. Accessories is the world’s single largest selling brand of custom fibreglass and aluminum truck canopies and tonneau covers. They presently operate from three manufacturing locations in Ohio and a distribution centre in Nevada. The CEO of THI Corp., Bill Reminder, was quoted as saying “We’re really thrilled to have A.R.E. join our family. We have always viewed A.R.E. as simply the best and preferred choice in fibreglass truck bed covers and caps.”

Italian Government Reportedly Offering Lamborghini Incentives to Produce SUV in the Country

According to a report from Bloomberg, Italian Prime Minister Matteo

Renzi’s government is preparing to offer significant incentives to produce the high-end Lamborghini Urus in the country. The report states that the government is prepared to extend as much as 100 million euros, not in the form of cash but rather in the form of tax breaks and other such incentives. In exchange for the money, Lamborghini would pledge to hire 300 workers to build the new crossover. The Urus was originally presented by Lamborghini way back at the 2012 Beijing Auto Show and ever since, the automaker has been trying to get the production a green light. Lambo is reportedly hoping to get a final decision in the very near future.

GMC Officially Unveils 2016 Terrain and Terrain Denali

Recently, GMC unveiled the 2016 versions of the Terrain and Terrain Denali, which are now distinguished by a new, more contemporary front-end appearance with new grille designs, a power dome hood, and LED daytime running lamps. Additionally, the back end features a new rear fascia. Some other revisions for the 2016 Terrain lineup include a new 18-inch aluminum wheel design on non-Denali models and a new 19-inch design for the Denali, a revised instrument panel centre stack, front passenger eight-way power adjustable seats on the SLT, and a new chrome-trimmed transmission shifter. Report Suggests SVR Version of the Range Rover Evoque Could be on the Way

An Autoblog report has suggested that Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Vehicle Operations division could have an SVR version of the Range Rover Evoque in the works. Not many details are known at this point, but it would be safe to say it would somewhat follow in Range Rover Sport SVR

the footsteps of the Range Rover Sport SVR, only this time going after the Porsche Macan SUV. Up to this point, the Evoque is exclusively powered by four-cylinder engines, so a move to something bigger would definitely be necessary. The same report suggests that fitting one of Jaguar Land Rover’s 5.0L supercharged V8 engines into the Evoque would prove difficult, so that may lead the company to use a more powerful four-cylinder or perhaps a V6 such as the manufacturer’s current 3.0L supercharged V6.

Mercedes and Nissan to Partner to Build Global Pickup

Daimler and Nissan have officially announced they will be teaming up to build a mid-size pickup truck based off the Nissan Frontier

platform for Mercedes-Benz. The pickup will feature a double cab and will be targeted for both personal-use as well as commercial. The primary market targets for the new pickup include Europe, Australia, South Africa and Latin America, meaning those of us here in North America will once again miss out on another mid-size offering. The Mercedes pickup will be built by Nissan in the Renault plant in Cordoba, Argentina for Latin America and will also be built in the Nissan Barcelona plant for other markets. The joint project is the latest milestone in the partnership between Daimler (Mercedes-Benz parent company) and the Renault-Nissan Alliance which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year.

Locking Rear Differential Makes Chevrolet Trucks More Capable then Ever

Often referred to as the G80 due to its order code, Chevy pickup trucks’ optional rear axle locks automatically if one wheel starts to spin, enabling both rear wheels to propel the truck. The added traction allows for trucks equipped with 2WD to go places thought of as 4x4 territory. The G80 locking rear axle is available on most Silverado models and is standard on LTZ and Z71 versions of the Silverado 1500 and all 2500 and 3500 HD’s. Additionally it is available on Colorado WT and LT models and standard on the Colorado Z71, plus it is standard on Tahoe and Suburban. The G80 utilizes technology by Eaton and performs as an open differential until excessive slip in one wheel automatically triggers the locking mechanism

Trucks running CNG or propane will be able to tow the same amount as if they were running on gasoline, and payload capability is the same as well, minus the weight of the installed alternative fuel system. The CNG/propane engine prep from the factory costs just $315 before the customer chooses a Ford Qualified Vehicle Modifier to supply fuel tanks, fuel lines and unique fuel injectors, and in total, upfits will run approximately $7,500 to $9,500 depending on fuel tank capacity.

BMW Says “No Thanks” to the Pickup Market

With the recent news of the partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Nissan to build a Mercedes pickup truck for global markets, and with Volkswagen in talks to produce a pickup here in North America, it appears many of the German manufacturers are jumping into the ever popular segment. According to an Automotive News report, BMW CEO Ludwig Willisch has said that BMW will not be joining its German counterparts because with BMW “It is about driving, not transporting others.” That statement comes as a bit of surprise due to the fact BMW has announced plans to come out with a large, people-moving, three-row crossover called the X7. Things can obviously change quickly in the automotive industry and if Mercedes is able to develop a true contender to the mid-size pickup segment, whether here in North America or global, it may lead the BMW boss to rethink his stance. 2014 TOYOTA TUNDRA

Good Things Come to Those Who Wait

Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturer

I

t’s been over ten years since the last major update of the Toyota Tacoma. But, finally, this year we will get a new one.

If I had to use a cliché to describe this event I’d go with “Good things come to those who wait.” An apt saying, where Toyota is concerned, in part because the Tacoma has a patient, loyal following who are always waiting - because Toyota just never seems to be in a hurry, not where trucks are concerned, anyway. And that’s a very different attitude from its truck-building competition. Just think of what they have produced in the past decade, in particular, a slew of new fuel-efficient engines.

the form of the 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine that has been doing duty in the Tacoma since inception (1995). As of 2012 (the last refresh), this motor was making 159 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque and had won an ecoENERGY Award with a combined fuel rating of 8.9L/100 km. What is new for the 2.7 (and the 3.5) is the transmission. Toyota will now pair these engines with a new six-speed automatic with electronic

Now, thankfully, that patience has been rewarded. For 2016, Toyota brings a 3.5-litre (Atkinson cycle) V6 to market in the Tacoma. This type of Atkinson cycle engine has been used in the Prius since 1997 and D-4S technology is also found in the Scion FR-S. So, in typical Toyota fashion, it’s new to Tacoma but proven technology just the same. What remains to be seen is how this engine handles payload and towing duties. What Toyota’s D-4S technology does is push gas through both direct and port fuel injection. This system feeds gas into the cylinders at the high pressure point of the compression cycle, but also as the cylinder is moving through the intake port (as need is calculated by the computer) to boost power. The result is a very stable burn and very good fuel efficiency with both injectors working in concert to adjust torque precisely as needed to move the load as speed, temperature and terrain changes. So, while this new engine is quite a technological leap, Toyota will also stir in a heavy dollop of what they like to call “tried and true” in 12 Trucks Plus

JUNE / JULY 2015

shift feature. The V6 will also come with an optional manual six-speed gearbox. As for the underpinnings of the truck, Toyota will only say (for now) that the chassis is stronger and there is a greater percentage of highstrength steel being used in the new construction. No doubt, more will be revealed as the roll-out to launch continues. Tacoma has long been a favourite in the off-roading community and for 2016, its dirt-churning prowess should be even greater with a long list of traction improvements.

NEW WHEELS A welcome improvement to the new truck is on the back end – for the first time, an easy-lowering, lockable tailgate is standard. Another first is a tri-fold hard tonneau cover available from the factory. Inside, from what I’ve seen at the auto shows, the driver-focused controls and layout retain an over-all familiar utilitarian look; however, the amount of trim accents is bumped up and the feel is now more up-market. Electronics are a key selling feature today, and on this front, Tacoma will have lots to offer. In a nod to the “selfie” generation, a GoPro mounting point (beside the rear-view mirror) will now be standard. Imagine capturing all those “adventures” on video.

The TRD Off-Road package gets new tech in the form of a Multi-Terrain Select system that features settings like “loose rock” and “mud and sand” mode. The computer uses different algorithms to regulate wheelspin, using both the throttle and brake. The result? Maximum traction on each surface. Other off-road-aimed systems include automatic limited-slip locking rear differential, hill start assist, active traction control, and crawl control (with driver selectable speeds of 1.6 to 8 km/h). This crawl control will accelerate and brake to hold its set speed. Body-wise, Tacoma continues to morph its look towards an overall family appearance – a direction it started during the 2012 update with new front fascia, grille, headlamps, hood and bumper. The objective, of course, is to draw the comparison with the larger Tundra and other Toyota SUVs. This time around, the exercise continues with features that are more chiseled, taller and muscular looking, inspired by Toyota’s desert racing expertise, says the company. Certainly, the higher beltline and the increase in wheel size (16 or 17-inch versions) makes the Tacoma simply look bigger. This design direction is spot-on as the market goes. Look at the current “mid-size” trucks (the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon) - they are all gaining size.

14 Trucks Plus

JUNE / JULY 2015

Other safety and convenience features will include the Qi wireless charging system for personal devices, Smart key with push button start, a power moonroof, dual-zone climate control, upgraded touchscreen audio system, Toyota’s Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert systems. The trucks are due on dealer lots in the fourth quarter of this year, but there is a rumour that sneak peeks of the 2016 Tacoma may be coming to select events across Canada this summer.

T

I was immediately impressed with the dash layout, sightlines, and ease of access to the controls and switchgear. The level of fit-and-finish is on par with similarly priced vehicles as is the quality, and tactile feel of the materials. Visibility is hampered somewhat by the long hood

he Chevrolet Tahoe and its big sister, the Suburban, account for the majority of full-size SUV sales in the North American market, a position that these two behemoths managed to maintain despite their aging designs and lack of refinement. For 2015, General Motors has finally gotten around to modernizing the duo, and the model refresh will no doubt help the company maintain their solid position in this segment. We recently got behind the wheel of the new Tahoe and a quick glance at the new rig reveals more dynamic styling and increased levels of refinement throughout. The Tahoe’s sleek look reflects Chevrolet’s recent design language favouring aerodynamic efficiency and lots of sharp angles. The windows are noticeably larger, a feature which will be appreciated by the driver when navigating this monster through busy traffic and in tight confines, but also by occupants both front and rear as all this glass gives the cabin a much more open and airy feel. The majority of the Tahoe’s equipment and engineering carries over from the recently revamped Silverado pickup, although the two vehicles ride on different frames. The Tahoe’s frame is fully boxed and rendered in high-strength steel which has resulted in a slight increase in the vehicle’s overall weight, but this has had little, if any effect on fuel efficiency. The Tahoe’s frame and body have benefited from an increase in structural rigidity which has led to improved handling and less intrusion of bumps and jolts when traveling over irregular surfaces. The top-ofthe-line LTZ model, like our tester, comes equipped with GM’s proven Magnetic Ride Control which is now in its third generation, and these shocks definitely improve the vehicle’s overall ride quality. Once seated in the driver’s seat, I was immediately impressed with how much more room there is in the front seat area, especially with regards to headroom. The over-sized centre console appears similar 18 Trucks Plus

and overall size of the vehicle, but a rear camera and an arsenal of proximity sensors will help you navigate the Tahoe into parking spaces you wouldn’t dare tackle on your own. Getting in and out of such a large vehicle can be a chore, but there are plenty of grab handles throughout to assist with this process. The rear passenger doors have been widened to facilitate loading, and optional automatically deploying step rails are available. The new Tahoe has the same 2,946-millimetre (116.0-inch) wheelbase as the previous generation vehicle, so there is no real improvement in rear-seat space, although the new design of the front seatbacks deliv-

massive vehicle up to speed with ease. The new six-speed transmission performed seamlessly during my test period and transitions were smooth and efficient. Acceleration runs to 100 kilometres-per-hour from a standstill take about seven seconds. The overall ride comfort of the new Tahoe is so smooth that it is easy to forget just how large a vehicle it is, as it handles like a much smaller

ers more room for the knees of second row passengers. A three-person split bench is standard kit for the Tahoe, but LTZ models feature twin captain’s chairs which offer exceptional comfort and support and are fitted with folding armrests. The third-row seating area is a 60/40 split bench design with a fixed seatback angle. Passengers will be comfy enough in the rearmost compartment if they stand less than six-foot, as the floor had to be raised to accommodate the solid rear axle which results in substantially less leg- and headroom. For those individuals needing to haul cargo rather than passengers, the Tahoe will accommodate up to 2,682 litres of gear. The top-tier LTZ trim features power operation of the tailgate as well as a remote-operated pop-up rear window. It also adds handy touch controls to the wall panel in the cargo area which permit power folding operation of the third row bench as well as the flip-and-fold second-row captain’s chairs. The Tahoe derives its motivation from Chevrolet’s venerable 5.3-litre V8 engine which is equipped with direct fuel injection, variable valve timing, and cylinder deactivation. This proven powerplant produces 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque, and is mated to a six-speed automatic with manual shifting capability and a tow/haul mode. Acceleration is smooth and linear during daily use, but when you choose to stomp on the accelerator, the motivation is there to haul this

SUV and never felt over-burdened or cumbersome. The Magnetic Ride Control system significantly reduces the amount of body roll exhibited when cornering at speed, which will no doubt help inspire driver confidence. The design team at Chevrolet made a concentrated effort to enhance passenger enjoyment, so they developed special door seals and used a different type of window glass for the Tahoe. This combination has substantially reduced the amount of road, wind and mechanical noise that enters the passenger cabin. While the market for extra-large, luxurious SUVs is a limited one, I have no doubts that Chevrolet will continue to dominate this segment, as there are few competitors in the marketplace that can offer this combination of luxury, technology and utility for anywhere near the price.

Full-Size Behemoth 2015 Lincoln Navigator Story by Jordan Allan, photos courtesy of Lincoln Canada

T

he full-size SUV segment is perhaps not as popular as it once was, but that’s not to say it doesn’t have a place in today’s automotive market, as they provide a level of versatility that few types of vehicles can. Given that General Motors has updated all of its full-size SUV options (Suburban, Yukon, Tahoe, and Escalade) for 2015, it’s only fitting that Lincoln do the same with its Navigator in order to remain competitive in this segment. The Navigator hadn’t changed much from a looks standpoint since the current generation was introduced back in 2007, but now has finally received some upgrades on its exterior that really improve the look a ton. On the front end, the Navigator receives a new split wing grille and a

newly designed hood, and the back end gets a refreshed taillight design as well as a power liftgate, while both ends are enhanced by jewel-like LED lights. Our Midnight Sapphire Metallic test model sat on a set of 20inch machined aluminum black wheels which really added to the overall great looking SUV. The interior was definitely not forgotten during the refresh as it received a plethora of new upgrades that allow it to achieve a sophisticated look while still remaining practical. A redesigned dash is featured with a 4.2-inch LCD instrument cluster screen and an 8-inch touchscreen that uses the latest SYNC with MyLincoln Touch system to control the vehicle’s infotainment. Although it sometimes has a bad reputation, I found the system incredibly easy to use and had no hiccups during my test week. 22 Trucks Plus

JUNE / JULY 2015

Under the hood, Lincoln has finally done away with the 5.4-litre V8 engine that powered it for years, and replaced it with a more powerful and efficient 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine. The twin-turbocharged powerplant makes an impressive 380 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, and is paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. I found the new engine to be incredibly smooth and able to get this three-ton behemoth moving when it needed to, and while fuel efficiency certainly won’t be the selling point of any vehicle in this class, it did provide respectable numbers that are certainly competitive. Whilst behind the wheel of the refreshed Navigator, you certainly aren’t able to forget that you are, in fact, driving a full-size SUV, but in comparison with some of its competitors, it really drives quite well. The standard electric power-assisted steering allows for more precise control of the vehicle at any range of speeds while also allowing you to more easily manoeuvre it at low speeds in tight parking lots. A vehicle of this size is not always going to have the best sight lines, particularly when it comes to blind spots, so the addition of the available Blind Spot Information System is a necessary one and helps you feel that much safer when switching lanes. The ride from inside was a smooth and overall quiet one, and was positively strengthened by comfortable seats and an ideal driving position. Rear seat room is incredible for both the second and third rows, but should you need more room for cargo rather than passengers, both rows easily fold down to leave you with 103.3 cubic feet of cargo room. Should you have a need for towing; the EcoBoost engine helps the Navigator achieve a best-in-class towing capacity of 3,900 kg (8,600 lb) in the 4x4 model, which is the only one available here in Canada. It would appear as of now, Lincoln has made enough changes with the Navigator to keep it fresh and relevant in its segment, which often seems dominated by the GM lineup. Having spent significant time in the Navigator, I can safely say that you would be doing yourself an injustice if you were not at least to consider it when thinking about making a purchase in the full-size SUV segment.

An update on the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel

Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturer

I

n the fall of 2013, Ram introduced the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, the first modern half-ton powered by a small diesel engine. It was a marketing move that came at a ripe time, as evidenced by customer acceptance. Ram anticipated a first year volume of five percent of total Ram sales; it ended up being closer to 20 percent by the end of 2014.

but it’s not. While the displacement is the same, the ProMaster is an I-4 design, while the domestic Ram product gets a new V6 version. The key difference is power. The I-4 makes just 174 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. Of course, Ram has had great success with its 5.7L Hemi V8 over the last decade (and it’s still available), but with the demand for greater fuel savings rising, Chrysler has pioneered other powerplants as well.

Frankly, this success is well-earned by a half-ton that is both fuel efficient and powerful. Plus, Ram’s marketing move beat its competitors to the punch, so to speak (despite there being some small diesels in small trucks back in the ‘80s we’d rather forget about). So, as the EcoDiesel cruises into its second year of production in 2015, most pickup truck buyers of today consider this a first – one that most would say was overdue and should take off like a Saturn 5 rocket. Ram’s 3.0-litre turbo-EcoDiesel is sourced in Europe, yet the field that this engine will be planted in was plowed by Cummins. It’s important to note that Ram and Cummins have been partnering for over 25 years now, and the benefits of that relationship have been denied to half-ton buyers; Cummins engines were (and are) only available in the HD trucks. But now, this market-shifting move is built around an Italian motor, built by a company that is now wholly owned by Fiat/Chrysler. This 3.0L engine features 24 valves and double-overhead-cams in a turbocharged 60-degree V6 block that will make 240 horsepower at 3,600 rpm, and torque of 420 pounds-feet at 2,000 rpm. It’s also available in the Jeep Grand Cherokee. This new turbodiesel is designed and produced by VM Motori, a Chrysler engine supplier in Europe and elsewhere since 1992. A note of interest here. Like many others, I assumed that the 3.0L EcoDiesel engine that powers the new Fiat-sourced commercial van, the ProMaster, would be the same engine used in the Jeep and Ram,

For instance, it has had great success with the naturally-aspirated V6 engine - the Pentastar 3.6L. In the past four years, it’s found its way into half the lineup. This engine is also found in the Ram. What the 3.6L gas motor and the 3.0L diesel engine share is an eight-speed automatic transmission that not only maximizes low-end torque, but also offers very low-rpm highway speeds. For this reason alone, the diesel is that much more amazing. During last year’s Canadian Truck King Challenge, we had a chance to test the diesel-equipped Ram – the first one in Canada. Our judges JUNE / JULY 2015 Trucks Plus 23

NEW WHEELS Past this, there are a dozen smaller improvements that equal a very forward-looking truck. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that the inside and outside of this Ram is probably the best looking of any truck on the road. The Ram diesel is a $4,500 option; however, it’s available on all but the very base truck, which will make it accessible to a wide range of buyers. Also, as mentioned, the overall points winner of the 2014 Canadian Truck King Challenge was the 2014 Ram 1500 powered by the 3.0L

collectively felt that the power in the truck was more than enough for any job. And to that end, we tested it empty, but also with a 1000pound payload, and then towing 6,000 pounds of gravel in a dump trailer. Looking just at the numbers, consumers will note that the diesel makes almost the same torque as the 5.7L Hemi, yet its fuel economy is anything but. We used data recorders this year to determine fuel economy, and on the diesel Ram specifically, we got a real-world result of 9.0L/100 km empty. When we added the payload weight, it rose to 10L/100 km, and with the trailer being towed, we averaged 18L/100 km. These are very good when compared to any V8 engine, which you’d have to have to match the tow rating of 9,000 pounds that the diesel will handle. Manufacturers earn a ton of money on trucks, so it’s no wonder that tech changes and optional add-ons are coming quickly from Ram engineering. But it’s not all about the engines. In addition to the new powertrain combination, the 2015 Ram is available with air suspension at all four corners. (As a bonus for towing, it auto-levels, doing away with the need for an equalizing hitch.)

EcoDiesel with 8-speed transmission. This revolutionary setup continues into 2015, and with a year of production behind it, the supply of diesel powered Rams is now ramping up – meaning the wait for one is not as long as it was last year. As for the Ram brand - it takes guts to be the first, and this small diesel from Ram works very, very well. Expect it to be copied.

s all the manufacturers rush to make smaller and smaller crossover vehicles, some of them have to deal with the weight of expectations of the brand. None more so than Jeep, which is obviously known for the rugged off-road prowess of its Wrangler. The small Patriot and Compass models were less than stellar off the beaten path, and were never accepted into the Jeep family by the faithful. The new little Jeep would have to win over more than just new customers to the brand. Jeep’s parent, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, had a smaller platform it could use, the one that resides under the Fiat 500X model, and that is the basis of the new Renegade. It is made in Italy, and looks it, a really cute, some would say funky, little crossover that looks like no

are helped by the body being a bit wider than the otherwise much bigger Cherokee. Headroom and legroom are more than adequate for taller front seat occupants, while back seat passengers will want to hope that the front seats are not slid all the way back. While the interior room is perhaps not as plentiful as other small crossovers boast, Jeep has made up for that with a flexible interior package that includes a fold-forward front-passenger seat and class-exclusive removable, reversible and height-adjustable cargo floor panel.

Jeep ever has before. If it didn’t have the seven vertical grille openings, you might never guess what it is. Like its big brother, the Cherokee, the Renegade had to appeal to the majority of buyers in the segment, meaning it needed to be a good around-town everyday car as much as a competent off-roader. And that it seems to be, as it is comfortable and pretty roomy, both of which 26 Trucks Plus

Out on the road, the Renegade handles and goes well, as expected of a small Italian car, despite the more aggressive tires that come with the Trailhawk package. Under the hood was the 180-horsepower 2.4-litre normally-aspirated Tigershark four backed up with the new nine-speed transmission, and it was flexible, if a little coarse under heavy load. Small engines really benefit from multiple gear ratios. The all-wheel drive versions of the Renegade offer two types of AWD systems. Standard is a basic full-time configuration, while

the Trailhawk gets a sophisticated version called Active Drive Low that includes a 20:1 low range, plus a disconnecting rear axle and Power Take-off Unit. The driver can control all this via the SelecTerrain®system, with Auto, Snow, Sand and Mud modes, plus Rock mode on the Trailhawk model. It’s certainly the most sophisticated driveline on a compact crossover, and is at the core of the Trailhawk’s off-road capability. But, being a Jeep, there is much more to it, with a total approach that would befit a Wrangler. Other Trailhawk features include: • Increased ride height 20 mm (0.8 inches) to 220 mm (8.7 inches) • Skid plates, and red front and rear tow hooks • Unique fascias with 30.5-degree approach, 25.7-degree breakover and 34.3-degree departure angles • Unique 17-inch wheels with aggressive on- and off-road tires • Up to 205 mm (8.1 inches) of wheel articulation • Hill Descent Control • Up to 482 mm (19 inches) of water fording • Up to 907 kg (2,000 lb) towing capability with available tow package. Our off-road drive in the Trailhawk was short, but it made up for that by being a good challenge for its capabilities. It was pouring rain, and

28 Trucks Plus

the off-road trails at our disposal were flooded on the flats and very slimy and soft on the steeper climbs. With four adults on board, the Trailhawk cruised through the lakes with no problems, walked up the steepest pitches, and crawled down them with Hill Descent doing the hard work. It was an impressive display, and the Trailhawk deserves to have the familiar Jeep “Trail Rated” badge on it. So, to the sceptics who drive Wranglers, the new little brother to your favourite vehicle, while not quite the mountain goat, is very worthy of wearing the Jeep name. The Renegade will go almost as far up that trail, all while providing a very civilized ride down in the city.

The Mint 400

Story by John Harwood

I

t all began in 1967 as a publicity stunt to promote the Mint Hotel’s annual deer hunting contest. It quickly grew to become America’s Great Race. Two identical dune buggies were sent on a 600-mile journey through the roughest desert in America from the Mint Hotel in Las Vegas, NV to the Sahara Hotel in Lake Tahoe, CA as part of the stunt. By 1968 The Mint400 was born and more than 100 entrants battled for $30,000. Many rock stars, television stars, movie stars and Indy racers took part in this classic race. Ted Nugent, Lee Majors, James Garner,

It wasn’t until 20 years later in 2008 that SNORE off-road group gave the Mint 400 new life. The Martelli Bros. and Best in the Desert Racing Association’s Casey Folks teamed up in 2012 to develop the race into a worldwide phenomenon. Today, the event has grown into a week long happening with the parade of vehicles down Las Vegas Boulevard, a huge Pit Crew Challenge and more. The 2015 Polaris RZR Mint 400 presented by General Tire was a week of off-road excitement, celebrating the early days of the sport and creating a futuristic world phenomenon of road warrior vs the desert. The 4Wheel Parts Vehicle Parade down the strip on Las Vegas Boulevard received a lot of attention. The thunderous roar of horsepower echoing between casinos brought people out to witness this metal armada rolling into town. The 2015 Miss Mint honour went to the beautiful Amy Scott of Solona Beach, CA. Amy was selected from six lucky finalists to represent The Mint 400 for the next year, and took home $5,000 to go along with the title of 2015 Miss Mint.

Steve McQueen, the Unsers just to name a few, and in 1971, the race was depicted in Hunter S. Thompson’s novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. In 1972, The Mint 400 beauty pageant was brought to life. Wonder Woman herself Linda Carter and Wheel of Fortune card turner Vanna White were Mint girls at one time or another. The Mint 400 continued to draw crowds to Vegas for many years until 1988 when the Mint Hotel was sold and the racing organizers disbanded. JUNE / JULY 2015 Trucks Plus 29

The top four UTV racers ended up finishing less than ten minutes apart, highlighting the level of competition in the Mint 400’s largest class. The winner of the morning’s three-lap race was Roger Starkey in his single-seat Class 1000 car. The overall first-place finisher, Justin Lofton, lost a tire about four miles into the race and his rear brakes at the beginning of the third lap. “We did the whole last lap with no rear brakes, which doesn’t seem so bad…it slowed me down, which probably helped get me to Winner Justin Lofton followed closely by 2nd place Robby Gordon. The favourites going into the Pit Crew Challenge were the teams of TSCO Racing (last year’s winner), Menzies Motorsports, and Jesse Jones’ team, but it was a late qualifier who took home the trophy. Steve Strobel and crew laid down a faster time in the head-to-head final with Steve Olliges, but two loose lug nuts would give them a ten-second penalty, and with that the win would go to Olliges. In The Method Wheels Time Trials, the qualifying loop was set in front of the Buffalo Bills Hotel & Casino so that fans could get a glimpse of what was to come on race day. Normally, qualifying is held deep in the desert and not open to the public. It was a great decision to bring the off-road action closer to the fans. Dale Dondel had the fastest qualifying time for which he received $5,000 and a head start on race day. Saturday is Race Day and at 6:00 am, the limited vehicles took off from the start line. There were 60 UTVs entered in this race. One of the most competitive fields in the race and growing. With Polaris as Title Sponsor of the race, it’s no wonder the class is growing in popularity. After seven hours in the harsh Nevada desert and 330 miles later, Dustin Jones and Shane Dowden crossed the finish line first in their first-ever Mint 400. The Coastal Racing Team also put together a remarkable run. Starting from the very back of the nearly-50-vehicle Pro UTV field, drivers RJ Anderson and Larry Job picked off racers one at a time in their Polaris RZR XP1000, working all the way up to second place. Remarkably, the team was running a completely stock motor

the finish line in this thing.” Robby Gordon had pushed his machine to (in his own estimation) a 12-minute lead before the race was temporarily red flagged for an accident cleanup and emergency response; once the cars were tightened and the race resumed, he went on to place second. Third place Rob MacCachren lost a driveshaft during the race, yet still only finished about eight minutes behind Lofton. Sam Berri took top honours in the 1500 Class driving the brand new Jimco Class 1. “This is for everyone involved in building the car. I’m out here to give these young guns a run for their money,” said the 62-year old. The weekend finished up with sponsor parties and good times recounting the highs and lows. So many stories but as they say.....what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas....... so you better make plans to attend next year’s Mint 400.

Truck & Jeep Fest

Story by Dan Mickelsen

n a province that is home to several of North America’s largest light truck dealerships, and where trucks outnumber passenger cars, an event dedicated to the truck-and-Jeep-loving consumer seems a natural. For the team at 4 Wheel Parts, North America’s largest retailer of off-road accessories, selecting Edmonton as the site for the first Truck & Jeep Fest outside of the United States still felt like a risk. “It’s a massive effort to put on one of these shows,” states Brent Goegebuer, Director of Events for 4 Wheel Parts, and a veteran of 15 years of Truck & Jeep Fest events. “For Edmonton, we spent months in planning and promoting, and committed over half a million dollars of inventory to the event – and we weren’t disappointed.”

4 Wheel Parts’ Truck & Jeep Fest displayed an impressive array of products. This inaugural show didn’t disappoint, as over six thousand enthusiastic customers visited during the weekend.

Edmonton’s EXPO Centre at Northlands was the host for the first of what is to be an annual consumer show for enthusiasts of the truck and Jeep culture. Whether seeking the best floor liner or utility rack, or wanting to build the dream off-road capable vehicle, From mud trucks to work trucks to show-quality lifted Jeep JKs, there was a variety of vehicles showcased to inspire customers and get them excited for the new event. Edmonton Truck & Jeep Fest’s distinctive interactive experience allows visitors the opportunity to engage with leading industry experts and vendor representatives who are on-site providing product demonstrations and the latest in truck, Jeep and 4x4 technology. The free event, spread across 100,000 sq.ft. of the EXPO Centre, was open to the public and featured displays from the off-road industry’s most innovative performance aftermarket manufacturers. Visitors were treated to free T-shirts, hourly promotional giveaways and factory-direct prices. he Moab Jeep Safari is a fun family event that promotes responsible four-wheeling. Started in 1967 by The Moab Chamber of Commerce, the first trail “Behind the Rocks” was created. The “Moab Rim” was next a year later. There were no charges or entry fees to use the trails. You just showed up and signed up to use your favourite trail. In 1982, the event had grown, and regulatory agencies wanted in on the action. The Red Rock 4-Wheelers were approached to run the event. Today, you can experience the red desert from mesa top to canyon bottom in your own vehicle on 40 different trails

ranging in difficulty from 2-9. All trails in this nine-day event are guided by experienced, friendly trail officials. Participants provide their own four-wheel drive vehicle, and take care of their own food and non-alcoholic beverages for the trip. Mercedes Now Offering 4x4 Sprinter

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

T

he logging industry of British Columbia uses a lot of trucks to get its business done. All manner of pickups move men, women and their equipment in and out of primitive, remote job locations. At least that’s how it’s always been - till now, perhaps. For 2015, Mercedes-Benz is offering two four-wheel drive systems on its 2500 and 3500 Sprinter cargo van. This move may well change the rough job site transportation landscape. Moving crews of workers along with all their gear in often foul, nasty weather has been a job that 4WD trucks have always taken on – because frankly, without 4WD, those trucks are just not getting to where they need to be. The idea that a van could do this job has no doubt occurred to fleet managers and site bosses – particularly in light of the need for large, dry, warm spaces – but with 4WD, that just wasn’t happening. Now, on some jobs, I’m sure the current crop of vans could manage. But on the rougher roads, in the mountains, it would be pure folly to expect a RWD van to do that job. Recently I had a chance to see if this MB 4WD could actually handle the work sites of the B.C. interior. North of the town of Revelstoke, I travelled an in-use logging road twenty kilometres from pavement to the summit of the operation, with a rise of over 1,000 metres in-between. Luckily (or unluckily depending on your point of view), rain and rising temperatures had softened the frozen road surface and created challenging conditions for the Sprinter – none of which stopped it. Except where guys flagged me down to ask how I’d gotten a van that far up the mountain. The first thing to know about the 4WD Sprinter is that it is a factorydesigned and built system – this is not an add-on or dealer-installed option. The truck comes from Germany already assembled and its specifications include not only the 4WD components but also a lifted body, up to 3.9-in. (100 mm) at the front and 3.0-in. (75 mm) in the rear. Suspension is also modified accordingly. 44 Trucks Plus

JUNE / JULY 2015

At this point, it’s good to note that (for 2015 anyway) the Sprinter is the only 2500/ 3500 cargo and passenger van (including dual rear wheel) that will offer four-wheel drive. The passenger van version may be of particular interest (certainly to the cutting crews I passed on my climb) as it has comfortable seating for as many as ten and still offers lots of cargo space. Two systems are available for the Sprinter, the key difference being one has a low-range setting while the other does not. However, while

Sprinter does offer two different diesel engines the 4WD systems are available only with the larger OM642 V6 turbodiesel (188 hp, 325 lb-ft of torque) equipped ones. Both 4WD systems work with a simple dash-mounted push-button. When engaged, the engine torque is distributed 35:65 between front and rear axles. The system adds 271 pounds to the GVWR of the truck. The base system without low range is called 4ETS, and is actually an electronic traction control system as it has no mechanical differential locks. Certainly, this is a different method of getting up the hill. At this point, I was thinking that open differentials in really muddy conditions are not ideal – so why build it this way? In part, the advantage of this system is that it eliminates weight and also the binding that comes

NEW WHEELS with diff locks. As for traction, Mercedes has applied a different solution to spinning wheels common in this situation. Named AdaptiveESP, this electronic traction control uses the ABS sensors to detect wheelspin, and will then brake individual wheels, forcing torque back to the wheel with traction. This system is automatic, requiring the driver only to keep the accelerator depressed. While it sounded good on paper, up the mountain, it required a bit of a learning curve. My experience with locked differentials is a constant sense of motion – even when all four wheels are churning – and it’s intuitive to keep the accelerator depressed while those wheels are spinning. On the Sprinter, though, I found that on the rutted inclines, as the van began to slip, I’d momentarily lose momentum as the wheels were braked, and I’d want to lift my foot. This is exactly the wrong thing to do with the 4ESP/4ETS system. Lift, and everything comes to a halt. Instead, wheel slippage is what the computer needs to send the braking command to the churning wheel. So, after a few failed attempts, I learned to allow the slippage and the braking, and still keep my foot in it. The van slows for a moment, then you feel the brake, then it starts to dig through the slop. It’s this braking of the spinning wheels individually which increases the power to the wheels that aren’t spinning. The sensation is different, but give it a few seconds and it works.

gearing, this system is, in effect, a slow-speed cruise control. I had a chance to use this coming down the mountain during my test. As I said, the logging road I was on dropped over 1,000 metres over 20 km of switchbacks. At least half of the run was in excess of 10 degrees of grade. This system is manually controlled with a push button right beside the low-range setting. Once engaged, the transmission holds the van at a speed between 4 and 18 km/h. The driver can set it by braking to the desired speed and then not touching the accelerator. If the accelerator is depressed, the DSR is over-ridden till the accelerator is once again not touched. If the speed climbs above 45 km/h, it automatically switches off.

The second 4WD system comes with the low range option. It’s called ZG3. This is a manually selectable reduction gear. The truck needs to be at a standstill for it to be engaged. This feature lowers the ratio between the engine and wheels by about 40 percent, which then increases the corresponding torque. This option works well in really difficult terrain and at particularly slow speeds.

The beauty of this is that during long, slow descents, attention can be focused on steering the best line through rough roads while also saving the brakes.

Another option that can be added to the ZG3 drivetrain is Downhill Speed Regulation (Code ZH4). Utilizing the low-range transfer case

The 2015 Sprinter Cargo Van 4x4 starts at $49,900 and the Passenger Van 4x4 at $57,300.

In all, I spent several hours on logging roads where I never thought I’d be driving a van. It works. Go see for yourself.

RV-ING

2015 Roadtrek Zion

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

I

n Louisville this year, at the National RV Show, I saw one of the first Class B offerings on the new Ram ProMaster chassis – the Zion. Now, I’ve had a chance to test it here at home and frankly, this gas-powered, front-wheel drive configuration is (in my opinion) about to re-energize the entry-level van conversion market. This statement has everything to do with the use of the ProMaster. Of course, we’ve seen this technical jump before – with the Mercedes Benz Sprinter. That shift was the first towards European-designed vans that are simply superior to what Detroit was offering. A few years have passed now, and the Sprinter, as it turns out, was just the tip of the iceberg. Today, only GM still offers an “old”-style American-designed van and I suspect it, too, will be gone soon. Ford now has the Transit, MB the Sprinter, Nissan the NV and Ram the ProMaster, which is a repurposed Fiat with a Chrysler Pentastar V6 engine. I mentioned the lower end of the Class B market because with the MB chassis and diesel engines (which are good trucks), typical conversions cost north of $100K. This Ram ProMaster Zion, on the other hand, has an MSRP of just $86,931. Mind you, that’s US dollars, and with the current rollercoaster that the Loonie is on, I wouldn’t even try to figure the conversion, but you get the idea.

What’s unique about the ProMaster in the van world is its front-wheel drive design, which Ram says gives its new van several best-in-class features, including fuel economy, cargo capacity, payload, turning radius, interior ceiling height and lowest step-in height. If you are a company like Roadtrek who builds on stock vans, this is all good news. Hence the Zion. My test drive took me through the spring landscape of southern Ontario, through villages and countryside just beginning to bud and past hardwood maple tree lots that were just dripping out the last of the spring sap. Seems like every farm had a ‘for sale’ sign for homemade maple syrup. The weather was so pleasant that my focus was pretty much everywhere except on the van and its road manners – and that revealed a design trait that I liked. I found that this vehicle drives “small.” The steering inputs, the turning radius, the suspension feedback and the seating position all contribute to making the van feel smaller than it is – hence, a very easy comfortable drive. So, whether in town, in traffic or congestion, I doubt any owner will ever feel burdened by the size of the Zion. What is also at work during the drive is felt (but not seen), coming from the van’s computer. It offers a stability program that includes wind assist, sway assist, drift compensation, rollover mitigation and (when towing) a trailer sway control. Lastly, and by this I mean it occurred to me lastly, NVH. Noise, vibration and harshness. This is an industry term that auto scribblers like me try to pay attention to. But in the case of the Zion, it was only after my afternoon drive that it occurred to me that 1. The interior had been very quiet. 2. I hadn’t heard any rattles, squeaks or groans from the interior fixtures (whether on pavement or gravel). 3. Harshness – well, I hadn’t felt any. But, back to the key difference between this and other vans. It’s the lack of a rear driveshaft, full axle and differential that makes the body sit very low. This offers up more inside space for Roadtrek to build in, but it also gives it a low centre of gravity and a firm, planted feeling. Still, Roadtrek has included an auto-slide-out step at the side door. It works fine. There are also two optional slide-out steps available for the driver and passenger doors. My tester had them, but I didn’t feel they were necessary.

RV-ING Up front, the turning radius and steering feel aren’t just a lucky engineering break. No, again, it’s because of the front-wheel drive design. It puts the weight of the engine, transaxle and drive components right under the driver’s feet, and the position of that front axle will turn the bus around in a very tight circle. What Roadtrek has built into the space provided by the ProMaster is a combination of efficient and simple. This van has no slides or popups. It is built around a single centre-aisle design which includes twin couches (or beds) at the rear. This pass-thru design takes advantage of the large rear cargo doors which can open to 270-degrees, creating easy access for all manner of hobby, sports and lifestyle accessories. For instance, bikes enter and exit easily from this space. Under the couches on either side is where you’ll find the bulk of the storage space. And, while all can be accessed from inside, it’s nice and easy to get at things when those doors are open and you’re standing on the ground. While I have used the word simple to describe the Zion, that does not mean it’s missing anything. Cabinetry is bright, cleanly designed and has a place for everything, while its list of features covers all the onroad necessities including an under-hood 280-amp 12V generator. The roof mount A/C unit puts out 11,000 BTU, while the furnace pushes 16,000 BTU. An onboard 3,000 Watt inverter will run most everything, whether plugged into shore power or not. The two-burner range, five cu.ft. refrigerator, microwave, water heater and 22-inch HD flat screen are all powered by either gas, propane, 12V or 110V in any situation. They switch as needed – in other words, just let the van worry about that. Wherever you stop, all your conveniences are there with you and working. If you don’t want to run the generator, an optional solar charging system will also be available. It will make up to 200 Watts. The bathroom in the Zion is surprisingly large for a wet-bath setup. The twin swinging doors can be left open for more elbow room, while the shower curtain directs all the water down to the raised floor pan.

Test Unit provided courtesy of Roadtrek Motorhomes Inc., Kitchener, ON

In conversation with the marketing manager, Jim Rawn, I also discovered that Roadtrek has identified a rising buyer segment in the Class B market - singles. Folks without partners (for whatever reason) who want to get out on the road are buying Class B’s in greater numbers. You can imagine that for someone travelling alone, the Zion’s simple, worry-free attributes would be attractive. Perhaps more than other RVs, I think Class Bs tend to get driven more. Frankly, they are more about going than staying. To this end, I will say

However, for pleasant day bathing, there is also an outdoor shower hookup. Speaking of pleasant weather - my test unit did not have any screens for the sliding side door or the rear barn doors, but the company tells me that an optional kit is on the way. I would imagine that a feature like this would also be followed by some sort of tent-type extension. Certainly the 12-foot power awning over the sliding door already lends itself to creating an outside room. So, while the ProMaster body is mostly a Fiat design, powering it is Chrysler’s own 3.6L Pentastar V6 gas engine which puts out 280 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. This engine is on the Ward’s top ten engines list and is found in more than half of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeeps lineups. The standard six-speed automatic transmission pushing the power to the wheels was designed for the cargo van and uses unique computer software that lets it respond to road conditions and driver demands. Called the 62TE, this transmission comes standard with a trailer tow feature that adjusts the shift points automatically when engaged. I have to mention that I love diesel engines, but if you want to keep costs down (as Roadtrek wants to do with the Zion) then this is probably the best motor choice. Reliable, fuel efficient, low priced and with a good maintenance record.

that the driving position in the van is very upright, great for visibility, but a little tiring on the posture. However, the seat does adjust in several directions and the steering wheel is telescopic. Cruise control reduces pedal fatigue and there is a left foot floor rest. Windows are power as are the mirrors. A nice safety feature is a standard backup camera that comes on whenever the transmission is put into reverse. It is also interesting to note that the standard body features on the ProMaster commercial vans include two roof heights (either 90 or 101-inches), three wheelbases (118, 136, and 159-inches) and four body lengths, and these compare to the offerings of its MB and Ford competitors. While the Zion uses just one of these configurations, the availability of other versions hints at what’s possible in the future. 52 Trucks Plus

NEW WHEELS Honda, along with a handful of other manufacturers like Mercedes with the GLA and most recently Mazda and the CX-3, are responsible for creating the tiny SUV automotive segment. Size-wise, the HR-V (2,610-millimetre wheelbase) is neatly nestled in-between the Fit (2,350 mm) and the CR-V (2,620 mm), and aimed at singles, dual-income no-kids couples, and empty nesters wanting a fun, sophisticated ride that doesn’t compromise versatility. Hayato Mori, senior product planning and business development senior manager, calls the latest offering a mix of a coupe, SUV and minivan, taking the best traits of all three. Indeed, on the outside, the blacked-out headlight-grille combo and hidden rear door handles give it an instant sporty appeal; the slightly raised stance and fender flares suggest weekends driving to mountain bike trails; and the wide tailgate and cargo area says ‘Take me on Costco runs.”

Ultra Versatile Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

Every time I come to town, they be spottin’ me — in the Honda HR-V, ain’t no stoppin’ me.” Okay, so the original lyrics to Will Smith’s “Miami” mentions a drop-top Bentley rather than Honda’s newest subcompact crossover, but it still works.

Miami’s twisted highways, long, beachfront straightaways and urban roads provided a great testing ground for this vehicle-of-all-trades. Accompanied by two driving companions, I took first shift behind the wheel. The heart beating underneath the hood of the HR-V is a 1.8-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC engine pumping out 141 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. Depending on the trim (LX/EX/EX-L Navi) you can have front- or all-wheel drive with a continuously variable transmission, or six-speed manual transmission (base LX and EX only). Taking out a manual EX, I was delighted at how crisp the shifts felt. The manner in which the lever satisfyingly clicks into each gear is reminiscent of Honda’s racier models like the Civic Si. Handling definitely feels more car than van or even regular-sized crossover-like, something that was tested thoroughly during an emergency manoeuvre initiated entering an on-ramp to avoid a confused motorist. The four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and electronic brake distribution are also excellent. As a passenger on the return drive, I revelled in the 998-mm of rear legroom, while playing with the second row Magic Seat — identical to the one found in the Fit — which allows for a variety of folded configurations to accommodate large or oddly-shaped objects. With the rear seats folded down, a maximum 1,665 litres (1,631 if AWD) of carrying capacity is yielded. The 2016 Honda HR-V is built in Celaya, Mexico and goes on sale this summer. Pricing starts at $20,690.

The hit song from 1997 blared over the speakers on a rooftop overlooking the white sands of South Beach in March, during an event that gave journalists their first real up-close experience with the uniquely sized and positioned vehicle Honda hopes becomes an instant hit. “We are targeting 12-month sales of 10,000 units. It will introduce a new generation of buyers to the Honda brand,” says Jean Marc Leclerc, vice president of auto sales and marketing, who referred to the HR-V as the “most powerful new weapon in the light truck arsenal.” 54 Trucks Plus
