Chevrolet to Add High Desert Package for Silverado Chevrolet has announced that it will offer the Silverado High Desert Package this year, set to arrive at dealerships this fall. The truck is based on a concept vehicle from the 2014 SEMA Show and will bring unique content and capability to the Silverado lineup. The package will be available on LT, LTZ and High Country trim levels, and includes refined exterior styling and an all-new cargo system that is lockable and water resistant. The system installs over the steel bed to add dual side-storage bins and three-piece hard tonneau cover. The tailgate locks with the keyfob, ensuring everything inside the new storage system is safely secured. The High Desert package on the LT trim level comes with 20-inch wheels and all-season tires, and 22-inch wheels with all-terrain tires are available on the LTZ and High Country trim levels. Additionally, the High Desert will be the first Silverado offered with Magnetic Ride Control suspension which features sensors that read the road every millisecond and trigger damping changes in as few as five milliseconds in the electronically-controlled shock absorbers.
2017 Ford F-150 to Debut with All-New 3.5L EcoBoost Engine When the 2017 Ford F-150 is debuted, it will do so with an all-new 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine and 10-speed transmission. The new engine will provide 30 lb-ft more peak torque, which boosts it to an impressive 450 lb-ft, which is best-in-class for a V6-powered pickup, and features better low-end and peak engine performance which is ideal for hauling heavy payloads and towing heavy trailers. All-new turbochargers will be used that will deliver more boost thanks to a lighter turbine wheel, and will work seamlessly with a Ford-first - electrically activated waste gates. The new 10-speed transmission will deliver improved acceleration and performance over its 6-speed predecessor, and utilizes advanced materials and alloys to save weight. Also, new real-time adaptive shift scheduling algorithms monitor more than a dozen powertrain and driver control signals to ensure the right gear is being used. Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016

As many of you may know, Volkswagen produces a great mid-size pickup for sales overseas called the Amarok, and although there have been rumours that it may sometime soon jump the pond and arrive in North American showrooms, there are still no set-in-stone plans to do so. That doesn’t mean that we can’t keep you updated on what’s going on with the truck, especially since it recently underwent a minor facelift and has added a diesel engine to its lineup. The truck has received new lights and wheels, a more athletic-looking front end, as well as an all-new dash design. The big announcement regarding the updates, though, is the addition of a new turbodiesel 3.0-litre TDI engine that pushes out 221 horsepower and an impressive 405 lb-ft of torque, putting power to the ground via the rear wheels or through an all-wheel drive system.

FCA’s New Turbocharged 4-Cylinder Engine Could Make Nearly 300 HP A recent report from Automotive News states that a new 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that FCA will build at some point next year (dubbed “Hurricane”) could make its debut on the next-generation Jeep Wrangler that is also due next year. The report says that the Hurricane engine will be a high-output, direct-injected engine that could make nearly 300 horsepower. The standard and very capable 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine that currently comes in the Jeep Wrangler produces 285 horsepower, so there would be no power loss if using the possibly offered four-banger, but you can be sure that, in partnership with the new 8-speed auto transmission, there would surely be a major improvement in fuel economy. ROAD TEST: FORD F-150 LIMITED
The
FIGHT FOR
#1
Story and photos by Russell Purcell
T
he Ford Motor Company is the uncontested number one seller of half-ton pickup trucks in Canada, and with the arrival last year of the innovative aluminum body, the truck gained an even larger following. Early pickup trucks were designed to be put to work on the farm, handle deliveries at the shop, or assist trades people with their heavy lifting. However, over the last several decades, they have evolved from simple work vehicles to do-anything, go-anywhere machines outfitted with the same levels of luxury, comfort and safety equipment available in any modern passenger vehicle. Ford takes opulence to new levels for this segment with its F-150 Limited model, as this top-tier trim package outfits the truck’s cabin with the finest grade materials, the latest in infotainment and safety technologies, and seating designed to coddle the driver and passenger alike. Climbing aboard the truck can be a challenge for some as the four-wheel drive system, over-sized tires and wheels (22-inch), and extra ground clearance conspire to slow the progress and increase the effort for those with shorter legs. Luckily, the Limited comes equipped with power-operated running boards that automatically deploy whenever a door is opened. Once behind the wheel, you will likely forget that you are in a pickup truck, as this rig is so well-appointed that its cabin design would put many big-ticket, dedicated luxury vehicles to shame. The Limited trim package includes an over-sized, dual-panel glass roof which helps give the cabin an open and airy feel. The level of 10 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016

fit-and-finish is exceptional, as is the quality of the materials used throughout. A distinctive two-tone “Mojave” leather treatment is complemented by aluminum accents and real Fiddleback Eucalyptus wood trim, and there is little evidence of cheap plastic bits. Comfort and spaciousness were obviously atop the list of musthaves when it came to putting the Limited package together. The power-operated front seats offer exceptional support, as well as both heating and cooling capabilities. The three-position rear seating area is also fitted with heating units, and the flat floor allows all occupants to have room to stretch (as well as helping to maximize space for hauling gear or packages). An extra-large centre console, deep glove box, and abundant cubbies and pockets will help keep the passengers free of unnecessary clutter. All switchgear and controls fall readily to both hand and eye, and the Limited has been fitted with all the luxury and comfort accessories one would expect in a vehicle situated in this lofty segment of the market. and infotainment gear and a heated steering wheel. New items on the list include a segment-first Pro Trailer Backup Assist, SYNC 3, automatic high-beam operation, and a 360-degree camera system. The Limited also comes equipped with a high-end, 10-speaker audio system engineered by Sony, voice-activated navigation, Lane-Keeping Assist, Active Park Assist, BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with Cross-Traffic Alert, and Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Collision Warning and Braking. On the outside, the F-150 Limited features LED headlamps and tail lamps, unique Limited trim and badges, and the aforementioned 22-inch polished aluminum wheels. Closer inspection will also reveal that the grille and door handles feature the same, sleek “Satin Chrome” finish as the Limited trim pieces. Signature Limited enhancements continue on the inside and include a special instrument cluster face, Limited seat badges, and a laser-engraved VIN plate with production number.

gear selections via a thumb-operated switch mounted to the side of the console shift lever. I suspect that the truck will still impress your gear-head friends with the throaty rumble that is emitted from the exhaust, as it is deep enough to convince the less informed that there may in fact be a V8 lurking in the engine bay. Ford’s engineers are proud enough of the sound that they also pump it into the cabin, which is so well insulated that without this extra effort on their part, your ears would be left wanting. Power comes on smoothly and with authority, and the truck’s suspension and chassis tag-team to insulate the passengers from bumps and bruises while helping the truck track straight and true.
For those individuals who actually use their truck for hauling gear and supplies, Ford designers have made available a pair of retractable box-side steps, and an integrated tailgate step is also on board to help improve access to the cargo box area. About that tailgate. It can be dropped at the touch of a button on the key remote. While this is both clever and handy, you still have to close it manually. An available bed liner will help keep the truck looking pristine for many years to come, and a full array of tie-down cleats will facilitate maintaining your load.
At first, it is hard for some people to understand why Ford would build a truck like the F-150 Limited, but when you consider that these vehicles often serve as mobile offices and perform duties far beyond just work, the need for comfort and amenities becomes evident. In fact, trucks like the Limited now deliver such a refined driving experience that many consumers purchase them to replace the need to operate two vehicles! After driving the new F-150 Limited, I am certain of one thing - the arms-race in the truck sector is far from over. Base price (MSRP): ................................................... $75,499

FIRST DRIVE: 2017 HONDA RIDGELINE
Second Generation
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of Honda
T
he 2017 Honda Ridgeline is the second generation of a truck that debuted ten years ago to mixed reviews. The original Ridgeline was quirky, in its look and some of its design features. It polarized its market into lovers and haters. However, it has to be called a success when you consider that Honda sold every one they built, and didn’t feel the need to update the original – until now. Down here in Texas, we stood around a truck that has maintained its “Hondaness” while changing up some of the more peculiar design features that set the original apart. Gone is the behind-the-cab stabilizing triangle, and the cab and box are now divided unlike the first slab-sided one. The wheelbase is also three-inches longer, allowing
for a deeper cargo box (an added five-inches) and suspension is upgraded, front and back. Interestingly, despite the truck growing, its curb weight is actually lower than that of the original, thanks to more aluminum and high-strength steel. Retained are the in-bed trunk and twin-action tailgate that folds and swings. These items were wildly popular with the original and now, if anything, are even further emphasized in the product literature. They were unique in 2007 and continue to be today. But what is really key to the Ridgeline’s appeal is the fact that it is the only pickup on the market that truly rides like a car. I thought about this ride characteristic as I toured the hill country of central Texas. The ride is so much more supple than other trucks; it holds the corners lightly but with a dead-flat attitude, and its height and sightlines erase the fact that there is a cargo bed bringing up the rear from the driving experience. The Ridgeline rides on a MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link independent rear. It has front and rear stabilizer bars and the steering is electric with a tight 3.04 turns, lock-to-lock. Supporting the weight are 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels with allseason tires. However, a key piece in the ride puzzle is something called torque vectoring, and this is part of an all-new AWD system that will be featured on every Ridgeline sold in Canada. So, while Honda can’t claim to be the first to use an AWD system that moves torque to each individual wheel – again, this is something more likely to be found on a car - but for this truck it not only makes for a better ride but also improves the Ridgeline’s offroad abilities.
20 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016
This is where some buyers will decide that the Ridgeline is just not enough truck for them. From what I saw, that’s okay. Honda is not trying to build an F-series killer; instead, they are filling a market niche that, while small, is significant. My thinking on this led to picturing the hammer drawer in my toolbox. I own at least a dozen. Framing hammers, claw, ball peen, metal working, deadblow, rub-
While the iVTM-4 is always “on,” the Ridgeline does give the driver some control with a button-operated Intelligent Traction Management System that offers different operating modes - Normal, Snow, Mud and Sand. These are self-explanatory, and with changes made to the shift patterns and power applications by the computer, offer noticeable torque variations as you drive. Driving this new platform is a more powerful and efficient direct-injected 3.5-litre i-VTEC V6 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission with wider ratio spread. The engine makes 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. So while this is the same displacement as the original Ridgeline carried, it’s not the same design. This 3.5 makes more hp, but more importantly, 20 percent more torque, most of which comes on lower in the powerband. Add to this the rejigged gear ratios in the transmission, and this truck’s off-the-line performance is much improved.
ber, sledge, etc. All are hammers, each with a specific job. Isn’t that what the Ridgeline is? So looked at that way, it takes the wind out of the “is it a real truck?” argument. It is and it does the job it was designed to do. For instance, the Intelligent Variable Torque Management I mentioned. Called the iVTM-4, this torque-vectoring all-wheel drive moves power between the front and rear axles (that’s nothing new). However, another set of clutches distributes engine torque between the left and right rear wheels as well. The capacity to overdrive the outside rear wheel by 2.7 percent creates a yaw moment that improves cornering.
22 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016
Where this improvement really showed was in the off-road portion of the driving event outside of San Antonio. This was not the Rubicon or some deep desert trail, but it was a cross-section of water, mud and sand that replicated conditions that only a small percentage of Ridgeline owners will ever find themselves in. The added low-end torque was evident when the truck had to get itself out of the soft stuff and up the steep hills. Its only downside is the clearance, which is adequate, but for me seemed low. Also on display were the improvements to the Ridgeline’s safety systems – active and passive. For instance, Honda Sensing has driver-assistive features that include Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keeping Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation and Adaptive Cruise Control. Depending on trim, it can also be equipped with Honda LaneWatch, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor and a blind spot information system. All Ridgelines come equipped with a Multi-Angle Rearview Camera.
Ridgeline is not a strong conquesting vehicle in its market, it is very strong with buyers who finally come to the realization that rather than a closed-in SUV, they need a truck. For what Honda is trying to accomplish, this is going to work. So while the Ridgeline is different in so many ways, Honda is following the current hot trend of adding upmarket trim packages to trucks with two more of its own. The Ridgeline’s original three models have now expanded to five; and in each you’ll find “available only in Canada features” like 225-watt AM/FM/CD audio system, front
Standard safety features include ABS with Brake Assist and Hill Start Assist; Vehicle Stability Assist with Traction Control; Trailer Stability Assist; Agile Handling Assist; dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, driver and front passenger side airbags and side-curtain airbags for all outboard seating positions; and a new Tire Pressure Monitoring System with real-time display. So while the first Ridgeline was pushed as a half-ton pickup, this time around Honda seems content with its truck being labelled a mid-size. As such, its capacities of 1,584-lb payload capacity and a 5,000-lb tow limit are firmly in line with its competitors. Still, this truck started as a car (or van)-based pickup and its manners continue to remind anyone who climbs in that it’s not a traditional ladder-frame truck. However the telling evidence of who is drawn to this truck comes from Honda itself. Nearly 30 percent of Ridgeline buyers (according to Honda internal buying data collection) come to the truck from SUVs. So, while 24 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016

OFF-ROADING: MOAB EASTER JEEP SAFARI
Wheelin’! Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde
A
nother great Moab trip is in the books. It only took me two years to get back this time – but I’m pretty sure it’s back on the list for next spring. Seeing as I went to Moab with no Jeep this year – but rode as a passenger – that’s kinda not right, ya know? We covered a lot of ground in 2016, including Cliff Hanger, Pritchett Canyon and Helldorado, which is in a private park called areaBFE. Upper Helldorado trail was on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) lands and was open to anyone’s use. These lands were listed in “School Trust” and sections could be sold off to support the education system – a good cause, no doubt, but when this piece and the adjacent piece (which held a trail called Lower Helldorado) came up for sale, one was lost while the other was saved, and the entire area was turned into a private by-donation 4x4 park and hosts regular rock crawling and ultra 4 events. Now the area has a list of trails that include; Helldorado, Smashing Pumpkin, DropKick, Blackflag, Britneyspeer, Greenday, Lockjaw, and MinorThreat. Check out areaBFE’s website - www.areabfe.com for more information. Also don’t forget about access to the Strike Ravine trail, which winds off into the hills and is used yearly for the Easter Jeep Safari event. 26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016
Todd and I went out to BFE for the Saturday to check out who was doing what and ended up following a batch of drivers from Utah through Helldorado. The best part was the rigs were not milliondollar rock buggies but just good ole wheeling rigs; actually one was what was left of a Land Rover with a very good driver‌
28 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016
Helldorado is not a very long trail, and despite all the rock around, it sure seems to change every year I come out here. I have driven it once end-to-end and while I made it to the end of the trail, like most, I had to winch up that last 12-foot wall of rock. As rigs get better, more and more make the climb these days, and on our
Saturday, out of ten, we watched only two manage the climb with no help, and another two managed with a winch line on for safety. So it’s still a nasty piece of business which will leave a mark on your rig somewhere along its length if you give it a shot. Moab is located in southern Utah, four hours form Salt Lake City. Each year the Easter Jeep Safari takes place during the week leading up to Easter where over 5,000 four wheelers descend upon the town. Moab is packed with adventure, with hiking, ATV mountain biking, sight seeing and just enjoying the red rock formations in the many national parks in the area, which offer views like nothing else on the planet. All are all great reasons to put Moab on your adventure list in the future.

PRODUCT REVIEW: MICKEY THOMPSON BAJA MTZP3
Put Through Their Paces Story and photos by Albert Vandervelde
T
he next generation Mickey Thompson MTZ Mud Terrain tire has been designated the P3 (the original MTZ is now in limited production). The new tire was enhanced with a silica-reinforced compound for better wear and wet weather traction. Sizes cover from 31-37 inches (metric and standard) for 15-, 16-, 17- and 20-inch wheel sizes to fit most popular trucks and SUVs. I ran a set of the original MTZs back a few years on a TJ I built and they were a comfortable-riding tire on the street and worked well in regular trail situations. The P3s were mounted onto a 4 door JK that sees regular trail duty. The previous set of tires – well-worked and trailridden - were Nitto MTs in a 33-inch size, so going to the LT315/70R17 (equivalent to a 35X12.50R17) was a bump up of tire size for this rig that sees regular trail duty. Robert Straw put the tires through their paces for a few weeks and reports “As you can see from the photos, at about 15 psi, they’re still a really stiff tire with not much flex at all. I’ll try going lower next time I’m out. Balancing was super easy, one or two weights at the most. For street psi, I got a good footprint with the chalk test between 3031 psi; mud-wise didn’t see a bunch but from what I did see, it cleaned out pretty damn well. Performed very well on the dirt roads; had to try very hard to slip at all, even in wet sections. On the highway, noise was noticeable but not more so than would be expected from an MT.” The report back of the stiffer sidewall at 15 psi is a good note as I found from the original set the sidewalls were a bit softer, so this should improve sidewall durability. Typical for a larger-diameter tire, each of these LT315/ 70R17 carries an ‘E’ load rating and a max capacity of 42 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016

tread compound for longer wear, enhanced wet weather capability, and superior cut and chip resistance. The Baja MTZP3 tread also features siped tread lugs with variable draft angles for better traction and stone ejection, and angled shoulder scallops with mud pocket scoops for better traction in mud and loose soil. The tire features a
3,195 lbs at 65psi, and weigh 68 lbs each. My original set were a standard rated 37-inch and a ‘C’ rating, which will also account for the stiffer sidewalls in the new tire. Despite the larger diameter, Robert felt the tires were lighter but also with a slight reduction in highway engine RPM, he has noticed a slight fuel consumption benefit from his Rubicon 4.10 gearing. With a large range of tires in the ‘E’ rated class this line will work well right up to 1-ton pickup trucks and offer those stiffer sidewalls for better on-street stability. For those wanting the traditional sizes – there are those with no metric equivalent; they are mostly in the ‘C’ load rating class, so will offer a softer sidewall. new compound with improved cut and chip protection, Four-Pitch SideBiter Pattern that breaks up terrain for additional traction and adds aggressive look, and the sidewall is reinforced with Mickey Thompson’s 3-ply PowerPly™ technology with a Decoupling Groove added to allow tread to conform to irregular surfaces and to reduce heat buildup in a high flex zone.

RV-ING: TRAVEL LITE 840RS
Looks Great, Feels Great Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
T
ruck campers have been around for over a hundred years. Photos of units that date to pre-WW1 can be found easily on the internet. These are often homemade, but some did come out of factories. Look for photos of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison on camping trips with Model T’s rigged up with custom campers. These very early RVs were the products of those men with inventive minds who immediately grasped the potential of a ready-made rolling platform to build on. Today the product is very different, but the purpose and point the same. Mobility and comfort are the hallmarks of the truck camper – in fact for “certain” camping situations there really is no substitute. Travel Lite, of Indiana, builds campers that fit just about every version of pickups offered by truck companies today. Long box, short box, HD pickups right down to the new mid-size offerings. If you have a truck, they probably have the appropriate camper for it. In my case, I have been testing the new Titan XD pickup from Nissan. This is a full-size crew cab pickup with a 6.5-foot bed. It is the all-new truck with the 5.0-litre Cummins diesel in it. Having already towed a variety of things with it, I figured dropping something on its back was the next step. That’s where the Travel Lite came in. With a dry weight of 1,965 lb, it really didn’t stress the truck that much. The frame is more than beefy enough and the engine puts out 310 hp, but the number that is eye-brow-raising is the 555 lb-ft of torque that comes on at a low 1,600 rpm. So, much like a hermit crab and its shell, I doubt the truck even felt the camper on its back. While having the camper on the truck is the “point” of this RV, it has to be explained that this arrangement accommodates two very different, yet important aspects of the RV experience. The first is the rough country getaway. Hunting, fishing, exploring, motorized recreation – or just the desire to go where others don’t - fall into the prime uses of the truck camper. 48 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016

Driving up mountain trails, or abandoned logging and mining roads, may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you attempted it while towing a trailer – well, that probably wouldn’t end well. This is where the truck camper has the advantage. It does not increase the length of the combination; it’s not low to the ground; and riding up on a four-wheel drive truck lets the truck cover virtually the same ground it would if it were empty. Also, with the weight of the camper over the drive wheels (rather than behind them), traction actually increases. The other advantage is that with the RV onboard, the truck leaves the hitch free, so it can still tow a trailer. In fact, that’s why truck campers are quite popular with horse owners who always trailer to events. However, boats, race trailers – whatever you’d normally tow - are still available
50 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2016
to you with an extended hitch receiver. And back to the torque – this truck is rated to tow 12,000 lb. So while the ‘sky is not the limit’, it’s certainly up there. The other thing I’d like to deal with up front is the common misconception that truck campers are overly top heavy. Frankly, the construction of the unit keeps most heavy components in the bottom half of the design, and most trucks today (including this Titan) also ride increasingly on rigid frames with serious suspension, so lean is minimal. However, if you suddenly have the urge to race a Miata through some mountain hairpin turns, you’re on your own. Space in a truck camper is limited – obviously. It’s much like a sailboat where every square inch of room is utilized. The reason I bring this up is that for many RVers, this is just the wrong combination. That’s okay, RVing covers a broad spectrum of needs. But for that select group who can see the potential for this rig adding fun and utility to the things they like to do – well, there is no other that does what the truck camper does. For these folks, the inside space will fall into the “it’s just enough” category because what they like to do is outside the RV. While I was sitting inside the Trail-Lite, I imagined myself coming in from a long day in the bush – happy, but tired and dirty. Looking around, I see that every inch of the available space in here is about caring for my weary body. First the full wet bath. With a hard door, it’s a proper toilet and with a lowered floor pan is also the shower. Full bath means fully covered in plastic panels, so everything can get wet. This is the most effective way of giving the owner a full-size shower in a confined space – it looks like it will work well and that hot water will certainly feel good. Oh, and a powered vent above should clear the air quickly. Across from the shower is the built-in 5-cubic-foot refrigerator, which you can reach from the galley in one step. The kitchen itself is relatively large with some counter space (however, turn around and the dinette table can also be used for food prep) set between the decent sized sink and the twin built-in cooktop burners. There is also a range hood with exhaust and a small microwave above. Cabinets, in the kitchen and throughout, are hardwood-faced and ample. In fact, there is storage space crammed into every possible nook of the camper. The dinette

ROLL-UP UTILITY WITH A HARD COVER ATTITUDE The Titanium is the ultimate combination of hard and soft in a truck bed cover, resulting in a stylish, low-proďŹ le, roll-up cover with superior strength and toughness.
So while breezy, I suspect that sometimes it will be just too hot in that bunk. In that case (as in my tester), a roofmounted A/C unit will tame that beast. Of course, heating and cooling are only as good as the insulation in a unit. Travel Lite uses 2x2 wall construction with R7 insulation in the walls and an insulated double plywood floor. Outside, the camper uses a combination of moulded gel coat over fibreglass, metal siding and aluminum rails and edges. Access panels for plug-ins, water inlets (and an outside shower port) and electrical hookups (30-Amps) are all lockable, labelled and easily reached. In fact, the grey and black water drains are also handy, right at the rear of the unit. Because of the height of the truck, this location is high enough to make dumping easy, and also keeps these pipes out of the way of possible off-road damage. The one complaint I have, though, is the height of the swing down step for rear door access. It’s a big step up to make. Its two feet in the air – just saying – and for some people this may be too much. Perhaps an add-on step that can be removed might work. table is ideal for two and it’s removable to free up floor space. The dinette seating is also the couch which is also a foldout lay-flat bed space. In a pinch you could sleep four in this unit – but in this space I’d be kicking them out early. Up front the model I tested had an extra-long overhang for the bed space. Taking advantage of the fact that half of all new trucks are crew-cabs, Trail-Lite offers longer bed space in a stretched frame. Because of the length of the truck cab, it doesn’t look out of place at all. This space makes for a large airy queen bed with even enough room for storage lockers on either side. Side windows open and will provide a crossbreeze. Right above is a crank-up roof vent. There are also individual reading lights and easy access. No one has to climb over anyone else.

Most truck campers stay put, most of the time, but I had to load and unload the unit for my test in the same day and I noted that overall, it was pretty easy. I removed the tailgate from the truck (one plug-in and two safety snaps) and backed under the unit. The camper sits on four support legs. Some units may have powered legs, but mine had manual jacks. The alternative to cranking these up and down by hand is a cordless powerdrill. The techs at McPhail’s showed me that with the proper attachment in the drill, we could load and unload in less than five minutes. The truck was great, and the camper looked and felt good too. This was one of those tests where the sun was shining and I wished I didn’t have to go back to the dealer. Maybe next time, I’ll just keep driving for a while.
