Ford Work Trucks Receive Performance and Service Improvements Ford has recently announced it is updating its F-650 and F-750 medium-duty trucks, which were completely redesigned back in 2016, and experienced their highest sales numbers since 1997. The trucks are available in straight-frame, kick-up frame Pro Loader, and dedicated tractor models with Regular Cab, SuperCab and Crew Cab body styles. As mentioned, Ford has provided upgrades for these trucks for the 2018 model year, which include electronic stability control and traction control brakes coming standard on all F-650 and F-750 tractor models, and they will initially be optional on F-750 diesel air-braked straight trucks. For applications with high electrical demands, a high-output 240-amp alternator is now available with the 6.8L V10 gasoline powertrain, and it will be able to power auxiliary lights and equipment which eliminates the need for a second alternator or generator. For the 2018 diesel medium-duty trucks, an optional automatic regeneration inhibitor is offered, to give the operator more control over the engine when it goes into regeneration to clean the diesel particulate filter. Ordering for the Ford medium-duty trucks begins this summer, and they arrive at dealerships in the fall.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk Announces Tesla Semi-Truck and Pickup Truck Coming to Market Soon In a recent series of tweets, Tesla Founder and CEO Elon Musk confirmed that a Tesla Semi truck was set to unveil in September, with a pickup truck coming to market in the next 18 to 24 months. During Musk’s recent TED Talk, he confirmed that the Semi would indeed be capable of long distance hauls, which was somewhat in question due to the all-electric nature of the truck’s drivetrain. He confirmed that the prototype of the truck is working and that he himself has even tested it, and claims that it handles and feels like a sports car. When asked to talk further about the Semi, Musk stated that Tesla is hoping to show that an electric truck can out-torque any diesel thanks to a flat torque RPM curve with an electric motor, whereas any internal combustion motor will have a much steeper curve. No further information has been obtained regarding the pickup truck, other than a tweet from Musk in April stating that it would unveil in the next 1.5 to 2 years.

Workhorse Group Unveils First Extended-Range Electric Pickup Truck At the recent Advanced Clean Transportation Exhibition (ACT Expo) in Long Beach, California, Workhorse Group unveiled the first drivable prototype of its W-15 electric pickup truck, which would be the world’s first extended-range electric pickup truck offered to the public. The Workhorse Group has already secured more than 4,650 letters of intent and pre-orders for the W-15 pickup, which includes direct all-wheel drive and two electric traction motors that generate 460 horsepower. The powertrain utilizes 6,000 Panasonic batteries and includes a small three-cylinder engine under the hood to charge the batteries when they are low on power, similar to how the Chevrolet Volt or BMW i3 operate. The all-electric range is expected to be around 129 km (80 miles) but can be pushed farther when using the range extender engine. The truck will reportedly have a towing capacity of around 5,000 lbs. and a payload capacity of 2,200 lbs., and is only slightly bigger than the current Honda Ridgeline. W-15 production vehicles are expected to show up in late 2018, which puts them just ahead of Tesla’s reported timeline of 1.5 to 2 years.

State of Colorado Set to Pass Bill to Stop Diesel Trucks from “Rolling Coal”

PICK UP LOCATIONS

According to a report from The Colorado Independent, the state of Colorado is set to pass a bill which would make the practice of “rolling coal,” which as you probably know is dumping fuel into the engine to produce a thick, black smoke out of the exhaust, a Class A traffic violation which would cost the violator $100. The report suggests that supporters of the proposed bill have pointed out that in order to blow the black smoke, exhaust equipment in diesel-equipped vehicles must be intentionally and illegally modified, which is a direct response to some Republicans who, in the past, have questioned proving intent. This currently has no bearing on those of us here in the Great White North, as we currently have no such laws, but if passed this could be an indication of what could possibly happen down the road in the rest of the United States and here in Canada. Upping the A

Chevrolet Introduces the Off-Road Ve

T

hree years ago, General Motors re-ignited the mid-size truck segment by bringing back the twins. The GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado proved, in short order, that the demand for these smaller trucks existed. Ford, Mazda, Ram and GM had all dropped out of this niche and claimed the demand had dried up. However, Toyota and Nissan kept at it and between Tacoma and Frontier, owned the segment and those sales rose. Why? Because the midsize market never went away - there just weren’t many options for customers who wanted them. Thankfully GM woke up. (In the meantime Ford, late to the party, has announced the return of the Ranger next year). But they didn’t just re-introduce the twins; they made them better and then upped the ante even more by bringing a diesel to this new chassis just last year. So, with building sales momentum going into year three

of the return, they’ve decided to top the topper by building an off-road version of the Chevy Colorado called the ZR2. The ZR2 is equipped with the standard 3.6-litre V6 with continuously variable valve timing, direct injection and Active Fuel Management (cylinder deactivation). It drives a Hydra-Matic 8L45 eight-speed automatic transmission. However, you can opt for the available 2.8-litre Duramax diesel engine. This costs more; however, it does tow more. Interior appointments are the same as the standard Colorado with the exception of special badging, such as ZR2 logos stitched into the head restraints. Also available this year is the Chevrolet MyLink radio with 7-inch-diagonal colour touchscreen.

But the truly exciting news about the ZR2 version of the Colorado is that it is not just a paint-and-decal package. The tech in this truck is specific to the job it was created for – and in the case of its Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSVTM) damper technology, is unique in the marketplace. Here is a short list of the components that make this truck an off-road beast. • Front and rear electronic locking differentials • Segment-exclusive Multimatic Dynamic Suspensions Spool Valve (DSSVTM) dampers • Off-road rocker protection • Modified front and rear bumpers for obstacle clearance • Exclusive ZR2 17x8-inch aluminum alloy wheels • 31-inch Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac® off-road tires • New cast-iron control arms • Aluminum skidplate for the radiator and engine oil pan • Autotrac transfer case • Transfer case shield • Modified rear axle with 3.42 ratio • Suspension lift of 2-in over a standard Colorado • Off-Road Mode Technology • 4-wheel disc brakes The electronic lockers, body lift, aggressive tires and two-speed transfer case are what qualify the ZR2 as the real deal when it comes to offroading. However it’s the Multimatic suspension that currently makes it unique and so very good at speed off-road. What’s unique about the Multimatic system is the use of pre-tensioned spring-loaded spool valves that control the flow of oil in and out of the shocks. In a nutshell, these shocks respond at various rates (in milliseconds) to how hard or soft hits to the shocks are. For example, the range is so wide that on-pavement, the truck feels firm and controlled – but not at all overly stiff, as you might imagine off-road shocks might feel. At the other end of the spectrum, coming off a jump where all four wheels left the ground, the impact was soft and controlled. This is the beauty of the Multimatic setup – it does it all, making an off-roader a pleasant daily driver as well. It should be noted that Multimatic is a Canadian company.

truck maintained a straight and level attitude, and I was in control throughout. Wow. Despite hitting the jump at over the recommended speed, the Multimatic spool valves and dual reservoirs saved my bacon. The rest of the Trophy Truck course we were using really highlighted the strength of the suspension components and grip of the tires as I powered through the turns with all the electronic nannies turned off. I drove the 2.8L Duramax diesel around the track first and the torque output of this engine tore up the dirt.

Even at a distance, the ZR2 is obviously different from the standard Colorado. It’s wider (3.5-in over a standard Colorado) and features a more aggressive stance. The fenders also bulge outwards to protect the paint from the mud and stones that the 31-inch Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires are going to fling. The ZR2 also boasts an aggressive grille and hood, with a black power-dome insert. The real clue to its off-road ability, though, comes from the front and rear bumpers that are chopped and pulled up and back for better obstacle clearance. Along the body, you find a functional body-side rock guard, while underneath, it has aluminum skid-plates, and heavy-duty suspension and steering components. The ZR2 frame is lifted two-inches and it runs 17x8-inch aluminum wheels, in a pattern exclusive to the ZR2. If you do roll underneath the truck to take a look (which I did), you’ll note that

This muddy introduction to the truck was followed up with on-pavement driving, and apart from a bit of “singing” from the Wrangler Duratrac tires, you’d never know you were driving a highly modified off-roader. Its road manners are gentle and light. You can easily drive this truck around town all week, and then bash the hell out of it on weekends. Kudos Chevy. The last segment of the test was rock-crawling. This pursuit requires ground clearance and sever approach and departure angles to keep the body panels from getting bent. It’s also a low-speed exercise that requires precise steering and control. My feeling was that the ZR2 was in its happy place climbing the rock ledges. The ZR2 is not for everyone – that much is obvious. But if you are the buyer who appreciates the character traits found in this version of the Colorado, chances are you’ll become a devoted fan very quickly. The single best feature on the truck is the incorporation of this Multimatic suspension; it gives the type of performance that (to date) can only be found in the aftermarket. However, when the factory builds the truck, you are getting the engineering that mates all the components of the truck into a single package. This high-performance, off-road ZR2 trim level comes with a starting price of $44,215 plus a $1,700 destination freight charge. Keep in mind, though, that although this truck leans towards off-road performance, it is still rated to tow up to 5,000 lb and carry a payload of 1,100 lb, making it all-week-long usable. Trucks are available at dealers now.

all the vital bits (the exhaust in particular) are nicely tucked up above the frame rails. If you contact rocks or debris off-road, it will be hitting steel, not running gear. If all these special modifications aren’t quite enough for you, an available option is a bed-mounted full-size spare tire that screams – Hey! This is a desert racer. Coming up to the first table-top jump on the dirt track, my right-seat factory chaperone called out, “slower, SLOWER” – but by then we were airborne. I braced for the impact, expecting it to jar my spine. But that didn’t happen. The truck landed and the suspension compressed, slowing the weight of the truck softly. In fact, that’s the only word that fits this landing – softly. I did not bottom out, I didn’t rattle my teeth and the 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

FIRST DRIVE: 2017 FORD F-150

Acclaimed Pickup Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

W

ith the amount of hoopla created by the launch of the much anticipated, aluminum-friendly 13th-generation Ford F-150 two years ago, you might think the vehicle wouldn’t make make headlines again for a while. But nope - Ford is showing it isn’t resting on its laurels one bit, and has given the acclaimed pickup a bunch of new toys for the 2017 model year.

Trucks Plus arrived in an unseasonably warm, but still snowy, Quebec in late February to get some seat time in the freshened best seller and check out all the changes. Most of the improvements take place beneath the skin; for example, standard engine start-stop technology proven to lower fuel consumption and carbon monoxide emissions. The biggest news, however, would be two major powertrain upgrades. The workhorse 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 enters its second generation boasting redesigned, lighter twin turbochargers and other under-hood components that have had their weight reduced to enhance performance and efficiency. As a result, the engine emerges a completely different — and more powerful — animal achieving significantly greater output. Horsepower is bumped up 10 from previously to 375, and torque increases a huge 50 lb-ft to 470, a segment-best. The extra low-end grunt means towing heavy payloads and large trailers should be much easier than before, although we didn’t attempt to pull anything at the event. “The 2017 Ford F-150 now delivers the best torque in the segment,” says company CTO Raj Nair in a product announcement. “This class-leading torque arrives with a transformative ten-speed automatic that improves nearly every aspect of F-150 performance.”

We spent the most time in the exceptionally well-equipped Lariat SuperCrew, sprayed in a gorgeous deep Ruby Red Metallic colour featuring a nifty black side door garnish, perfectly suited for carrying both a full load of six passengers and cargo. All the bells and whistles were present: Pro Trailer Backup Assist (trailer steering using a dash-mounted knob), Blind Spot Information System and AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control (automatic brake and throttle modulation to keep all tires on the ground). Fourwheel drive is part of the SuperCrew package, so traction shouldn’t be an issue regardless of the terrain. There was a scarily steeplooking inclne along our route that the truck tackled like a champ after switching to the 4x4-low mode.

Speaking of which, the second piece of the puzzle is the SelectShift transmission containing a whopping ten gears, three of them for overdrive purposes, meaning the truck can get stuff done while maintaining excellent fuel economy. Like the motor, and much of the body as well, aluminum is extensively used to keep the kilograms down. I’ve evaluated competitors with a higher-than-typical amount of gears before, and an issue sometimes surfaces where the vehicle constantly shifts in an attempt to compensate for fluctuating road speed and/or engine load. Ford says it has programmed in a realtime adaptive shift-scheduling algorithm to help the computer combat this indecisiveness, and it seems to work as advertised. There was little gear hunting on the drive, even going up or down hills. The tranny is tuned to yield better acceleration. Compared to a lot of pickups in the segment, the F-150 can move and move quickly, especially in a situation such as merging onto a busy highway. I believe the reduction in mass as talked about above really comes into play in this case. There’s even a Sport mode optimizing settings for a more spirited behind-the-wheel experience. The number of available cab sizes and trim levels are too many to count on two hands, so I won’t go into too much detail about them.

Additional comfort and convenience options include a remote tailgate operable via the key fob, a hidden tailgate step, active parallel park assist, lane keep assist and radar cruise control largely eliminating the need for manual acceleration and deceleration when following other vehicles on the highway. Ford’s acclaimed SYNC 3 infotainment system is also found here, integrating Apple CarPlay and Android smartphone functionality, voice recognition and a touchscreen responding to pinch and zoom inputs. As tested, the Lariat SuperCrew rang up at $74,169. Entry-level models start at $28,249. The 2017 F150s are available now.

Long Motor Co. Working long hours supplying truck parts

Long Motor Corp. maintains a fleet of trucks in a two-story room that are used to model new reproduction parts from.

Story and photos by John Gunnell We were travelling through Kansas City on a Monday afternoon, and realized we might be able to stop at LMC Truck in Lenexa, Kansas (a suburb of Kansas City) to see the place we’d been ordering lots of parts from. We figured we might be able to come by the next morning if we were lucky, but LMC told us Monday afternoon would do fine for a visit. We pictured a cadre of workers by the door getting ready to punch their time cards and anxiously ready to go home. As it turned out, we were wrong. Long Motor Co. (the parent company of LMC Truck) is so big that its retail stores are open until early evening; order takers work until 10 pm. and the warehouse is staffed 24/7 to get orders out. With over 400 workers, LMC is a company that can supply reproduction parts and accessories for a variety of cars and trucks very quickly and efficiently.

A number of older classic trucks like this Chevrolet 3500-series pickup are also included in the company’s truck collection. Truck parts are the biggest piece of the company’s pie. Truck builders should keep the number 30 in mind. Long Motor Corp. has been around 30 years and currently stocks 30,000 truck components. Parts for 1948-2015 Ford, 1947-2013 Chevrolet, 1947-2013 GMC and 1972-2015 Dodge pickup trucks and SUVs are carried. Also in inventory are van parts for 1971-2009 Chevy and GMC, 1975-2012 Ford and 1971-2003 Dodge models.

Some of the trucks that the company owns - such as this Ford pickup - are either pristine originals or a perfectly restored example. 26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

LMC Truck has a number of different catalogues for different years and models of the four brands of trucks. The inventory includes body replacement panels, chrome bumpers, replacement gas tanks, chrome replacement grilles, steering wheels, seat belts, upholstery and trim items and more. The company also sells accessories such as LED light bars and some custom-designed parts that improve original equipment parts that had quality issues. For instance, the company improved on a Dodge truck dash pad that was known to crack.

Long Motor Corp. currently publishes over 33 catalogues and carries over 40,000 parts for trucks and sports cars. LMC Truck, which started in 1993, is the largest part of the firm. LMC Truck advertises that it provides the Right Part… Right Price… Right Now. The company believes that is not just a motto, but a way of doing business. LMC Truck turned an American dream into a success by stressing a high level of customer service and parts quality to its employees.

It takes a lot of room to store 40,000 parts and the “air space” is used very efficiently, thanks to these tall aisles of pallet racking.

Our tour of the company started in the catalogue department. The information that goes into each of the company’s 33 catalogues is carefully researched and a “master” version of each catalogue is stored on a metal shelf in a loose-leaf binder so that notes can be made about needed changes. It was pretty impressive to see all of the different catalogues in one spot and we noticed that LMC also prints a few how-to booklets to help people installing parts. From the catalogue department, we moved through each area in the building. By this point, it was dinnertime, but the room where the orders come in by phone and Internet was packed with employees who are trained to handle these functions. Everyone was busy there and in the warehouse. We saw pallet racking filled with parts stretching up towards the ceiling, and the ceiling was higher than we ever want to climb inside a building. Special electronic “tracks” guide forklifts down very narrow aisles without hitting the racking. This allows more LMC Truck parts to be stored in a given amount of space.

There are separate “factory stores” for truck parts (seen here) and for sports car parts. Walk-in customers can save on shipping.

Everything about the order-filling process, except maybe the rubber tubs the smaller parts go in, is high-tech. Computerized systems make sure that every tub is filled with the correct merchandise and that no extra parts wind up in a tub. We got the impression that it’s very hard—if not impossible—for the people filling the tubs to make a mistake. Scanners and bar codes eliminate human errors. Orders with larger parts, such as hoods and fenders, are put together in a different part of that warehouse. We were shown some of the

at the company headquarters in Lenexa. Since the company also sells parts for British sports cars, there is a separate store for those parts. Since truck parts is the biggest branch of the company, they have their own stores (one for Chevy/GMC and Dodge trucks and a new warehouse expansion with a City Pick-up counter for Ford). These locations are well-stocked with parts and catalogues While we have purchased many British car parts from Long Motor Corp., our experience with their truck parts is limited to a pair of rear quarter panels we bought to replace the rusty originals on a 1989 Chevy C10 pickup. Those panels fit well and were accurate reproductions. We are also all-around happy with the company’s ordering system and haven’t experienced any issues to date.

place of foam-like filler are re-useable, which helps keep expenses down so parts pricing can be managed better. As we wound our way through a few buildings in a modern industrial park, we came to a couple of rooms—one up and one down—that were both were filled with trucks, including many classic models. The two-story storage area even had a truck elevator to carry vehicles between the levels.

All LMC catalogues have technical illustrations to help restorers, and though some things aren’t always easy to follow, as we said, the master catalogues are maintained so that improvements can be made each time a catalogue is redone. For that reason, it pays to always have the company’s latest catalogues on hand, something I would recommend for anyone looking to restore any of their older model projects on the go. The shipping department also stays busy into the nightfall. Just about every phase of the operation is computer controlled.

There were Chevy, Ford, GMC and Dodge trucks in the rooms, plus the company’s show trailer. Some of the trucks were virtually new, some were restored and others were unrestored. A number of older trucks were covered with surface rust, but still very solid. A few trucks from different eras were partly disassembled. All of the vehicles are used as models for designing and prototyping new products or as promotional trucks to show off available parts. TECH: UNDERSTANDING TRUCKS

Truck and RV Safety

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of the manufacturers

H

ere comes the RVing season, and many RVers who will find themselves in heavy truck traffic on our highways will also find it frightening. When asked what it is about large trucks they dislike, the most common answer is “they just scare me.” If you’d prefer to be comfortable around trucks, rather than nervous, then take this cure. A dose of information with a chaser of common sense. First, consider that as RVers, we share a similar set of road manners with trucks. We both have a large vehicle with considerable

weight that we have to move as smoothly, efficiently and safely as possible. Now, consider that a large tractor trailer can weigh (loaded) upwards of 100,000 lb. But, rather than taking this as a frightening figure, let’s change this fact to an image. Think of a calm elephant, slowly lumbering about its business. An elephant, which can be frightening because of its size, certainly doesn’t come across that way because of its movements. It walks slowly, steadily, with a measured easy gait. In fact, in all the National Geographic film footage I’ve seen, most of an elephant’s movements are almost predictable. A tractor trailer behaves much the same way. That driver is trained to make planned, slow movements. He will always try to keep a steady speed and stay in the same lane. He will accelerate steadily and brake gently. That much weight demands it and his life depends on it. If you make a habit of watching trucks while you are on the highway, you’ll begin to notice before long that you can almost predict a truck’s movements. Consider these two scenarios that often frighten and anger RVers. You‘re on a multilane highway approaching a cloverleaf intersection, and a truck, forward and to your right, signals left and pulls into your lane causing you to slow as you approach it. Why

40 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

did he do that? You fume - there was no one ahead of him. That’s true - but the truck driver saw that there was traffic just entering the on-ramp at the cloverleaf ahead, and by moving to the centre lane a kilometre before the ramp, he avoided having to suddenly brake or make a sudden lane change once he reached the merging traffic. Still, you say, it inconvenienced me. Yes, but much less than if the truck had been squeezed by the traffic into your lane at the last minute. But now, with this knowledge, you can look ahead to that merge lane and anticipate the truck’s movements. For that matter, if you are in the same position, avoiding the outside lanes at interchanges is good road management for the RVer, too. The second scenario is the reverse of the same situation. The traffic is too heavy for the truck to move over safely before the clo-

verleaf, so instead, he adjusts his speed to allow merging traffic to enter ahead of him. He may drop between five and ten km/h, so the following traffic also slows. If you can see this situation coming into play up ahead, you also can reduce speed and avoid having to brake. If the on-ramp traffic is also heavy and they can’t move, most trucks will maintain a steady speed through and past the merge lane. Now, for the motorist entering traffic, there are few more intimidating sights then an eight-foot tall radiator bearing down on him. But, the merging motorist needs to consider his part in this traffic ballet. Knowing that the trucks speed remains constant, he can quickly gauge whether he has the time (and distance) to accelerate ahead of the truck, or to drop speed and slip in behind. While many RVers will tell you otherwise, a truck maintaining a steady speed is the safest thing for it to do. If you are the one merging, you should calculate where you will enter traffic while still negotiating the on-ramp, and if you’re the one on the highway, do the same by looking ahead. If you anticipate its movements, you can easily run circles around that old Pachyderm. What else should you know about trucks? When you come to a stop behind a truck, keep to the left of your lane so the driver can see you in his side mirror. Remember if you can’t see the driver, he probably can’t see you. Always leave plenty of room between you and the truck. When a truck is forced to stop on an upgrade, he may roll back. Also remember he may have a very heavy load and it will take him

JUNE/JULY 2017 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 41

a while to get going. By leaving space it will also be much easier to change lanes and pass him.

of trucks attempting to pass each other. At least be sure you are travelling at the posted speed limit.

Never tailgate, particularly trucks. Driving behind a truck is like having a sheet of plywood strapped to your hood. Your view is almost totally blocked and your only source of road input is his brake lights. If you can pass safely, do so. If not, back way off so you can see more than his trailer doors. When you do pass, don’t pull in front of a truck without leaving room. Trucks can’t stop on a dime and you might be the cause of a jackknife or your own accident. Once you have decided to pass and see that the way is clear, don’t hesitate. Declare your intention to pass by signalling, and follow through quickly and safely. Before re-entering the lane, wait until you see both of the truck’s headlights in your rear-view mirror. This will ensure you are an adequate distance from the truck. Lastly, be sure you maintain your speed when you are in front of a truck.

A truck following you downhill will gain speed; it has no choice because of the weight it’s carrying. The speed the truck gains on the downhill will scrub off as it climbs the next hill. This is how trucks manage their road speed, but this “speed up, slow down” form of driving makes some RVers crazy. Well, that’s understandable, but what’s interesting is that RVers (particularly with bigger rigs) have the same problem. Not only do they get push going downhill, they need that extra speed to climb the next one. The alternative is to brake on the way down and then have to crawl up the next hill with their four-way hazard lights flashing. This is one time that RVers and truckers should agree wholeheartedly – braking and crawling are bad for the rig. So, again be aware of the trucks around you and know that on the downhill, you will have to accelerate or move over; it’s not fair to make that truck brake and then have to limp up the other side in low gear.

When a truck is backing up, stay away from it - period. Don’t sit there and wonder why that trailer is swinging toward you. Even though they have very large mirrors, there are all kinds of blind spots during a backing manoeuvre. Be patient and never cross behind it, or pass anywhere within the arc of a backing truck.

Always keep a large space cushion around your car or RV; you do not have to drive beside a truck. Increase or decrease your speed, change lanes and be vigilant - maintain your space cushion. Don’t begrudge the space that trucks need. Accept them, understand them - and be safe.

Trucks turn differently than cars. The rear wheels of the trailer tend to cut the arc of a turn shorter than the steering wheels. That’s why you’ve seen trailers climb curbs. The only way to avoid this is to exaggerate turns, by either moving to the left before turning right or by driving very far into an intersection and then turning into a wide left turn. Sometimes, as the truck moves left, a narrow, temporary lane is created to its right. If a car moves up on the right side of the truck it could get “squeezed” when the truck swings into its right turn. Always pay close attention to truck turn signals. The centre lane on multi-lane highways is the trucker’s passing lane. On major roadways, transport trucks are not allowed in the high speed (far left) lane. That means they rely on the centre lane to pass slower traffic. If you travel in the centre lane, be aware 42 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

FEATURE: 2017 FORD TRANSIT DIESEL

An unusual looking van... or is it? Story by Ian Harwood, photos courtesy of Ford Canada

D

riving down the road, you see quite a variety of work vehicles - cube vans, flat decks, service trucks, and pickups, to name but a few. The days of the traditional van have gone except for a few that have seen more than a little action in their life. Consumers looking for a work van want more headroom in the back to carry out products to the job site, or perhaps use as a portable office or shop. Enter the European vans that to us in North America look different. The Sprinter van is a classic example. It started with a few driving the streets and now is the template for what other vans to aspire to be. The 2017 Ford Transit is relatively new to us but has been around for many years in Europe, a success there and very possibly on its way to becoming a huge success here. The looks scream European, but it fits in right at home here in Canada. The headlights and front grille look just like most Ford products, and in fact, I found myself doing a double-take when I first came across one. In the cab, I found plenty of room and could see myself working in this all day, jumping out to make deliveries and working very comfortably. The Transit Van is available in three body lengths - 320 cm (126-in.), 363 cm (143.7-in.), and 436 cm (172.2-in.), and three roof heights - 211 cm (83.2-in.), 255 cm (100.7-in.), and 279 cm (110-in). There is an available Crew Chief option that helps you track your fleet. A GPS-enabled black box is mounted in the vehicle and records detail information like location, speed, and fuel economy. It can also tell if the driver’s seat belt is in use. The available engines are 3.7L Ti-VCT V6 with 275 hp, 3.5L EcoBoost V6 with 310 hp, and a 3.2L I5 Diesel with 185 hp, all mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Safety is important, and a work van should be a safe place to work. 50 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

The Transit van offers driver and passenger airbags, side curtain and front thorax side airbags, anti-lock brakes, and three-point seat belts. If the SYNC option is chosen, a distress call is made for you when the air bag goes off. The power rack-and-pinion steering set-up helps this van drive like a dream. Turning is very easy, and backing into loading bays is a piece of cake. The optional backup camera helps to dial in the proximity of the rear bumper and a wall. I thought a van of this height would be more problematic on the highway with the cross winds, but on a trip across the Port Mann bridge being passed by a large semi, I felt very comfortable. It is very much like driving a minivan. I highly recommend a test drive. Fuel Consumption: 16.9 / 12.5 L/100 km (city/highway) Sticker price: Starting at $30,052. As tested - $53,934.

FEATURE: DIGITIZATION OF TRUCKS

Driver Assist Electronics Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

T

he cameras are what most consumers notice first. Up to seven of them on many new pickup trucks. These broadcast every movement of the truck from nose to side views, plus reversing manoeuvres as they happen in real time, right to the large centre screen. Frankly, given the size of pickups today, that help is much appreciated. The days of “judging distance” are fading fast as these multi-camera systems are taking the guesswork out of parking and reversing. In fact, helping drivers is what so much of the new tech in these trucks is

jackknife. In addition, an auxiliary camera can be mounted at the rear of the trailer, and its image is also broadcast on the centre screen via the seven-pin electrical connector. In essence, with these video inputs, it is possible to back up a trailer without looking at the mirrors at all – an option that will seem ridiculous to any trailering veteran. Yet, not only can it be done, it’s actually safer than the old-school methods we have been using for decades. Simply put, you can see far more with cameras than you can with mirrors. This revolutionary leap in driver-assist systems is just one of the electronic marvels that are in new trucks now. This isn’t future tech, it’s here now. And, while the cameras do make a splash, particularly in one-person hitching assistance (imagine, no more spotters, no jumping in and out, no yelling!) either to the bumper or even the fifth wheel/gooseneck pin; it’s the integrated computer programs that are making trucking safer and less stressful. If you’re sensing a theme, it’s because there is one. I’ve been driving trucks for over 40 years (and reporting on them) and I’ve watched as the industry over the past twenty years dedicated itself to building bigger and better trucks. However, the emphasis was on powertrains, passenger space/luxury and cargo capacity. Yet, with ever-larger trucks and greater loads, the driver’s skills had to also increase. I believe they did, but the anxiety and stress that came with it was undeniable. Now, the manufacturers are finally focused on helping drivers get the most out of these trucks, safely. Multiple cameras, adaptive cruise control, Wifi and never-before achieved weight limits – these are the headlines, but also lurking in the wiring are a multitude of subtle systems that, combined, are making the driver’s life easier.

all about; these video helpers are just the obvious features of what’s currently a driver-assist technology revolution. Ford’s new Super Duty, for instance, uses three cameras just for the trailer reverse guidance. On the centre screen, these create a bird’s-eye diagram of the truck as well as a split image of the left and right side of the trailer. The truck will even warn the driver if the trailer is about to 52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

GM, Ford and Ram all feature adaptive cruise control technology now; of particular importance on the HD trucks, this cruise control accelerates and slows with the pace of traffic. Now this is exactly what these systems do on cars, you say – but with trucks, the wild card has always been weight. Being able to haul over 30,000 lb with modern pickups, the scary flaw in previous systems was that during downhill runs, trucks would over-speed the cruise control. Today though, the new driver-assist computer has drawn together the transmission gearing,

length of your trailer. It now indicates when your truck and trailer have cleared the passed vehicle. A seemingly small feature, Hi-beam assist, again, is a comfort on long night runs. Nissan’s new Titan has paid Detroit a compliment by copying most all the mainstream driver- assist features while adding one or two of its own. A Trailer Light Check system is unique, allowing one person to check turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights from behind the trailer using the keyfob. Its camera system also includes Moving Object Detection (MOD), which detects moving objects behind

exhaust braking and vehicle and trailer brakes into one system that automatically holds any preset speed, no matter the weight or the severity of the grade. This single innovation alone is award-worthy; I for one will not miss white-knuckling it down long grades, as the load pushed the truck ever faster, and I feathered the brakes praying they wouldn’t overheat. Ford and GM, for instance, both offer adaptive steering systems that change up steering input at low speeds, which makes backing manoeuvres easier. Digital steering also holds the truck to the crown of the road at high speed, fighting cross-winds and lousy pavement. Add to that Lane-Keep assist, and you have a second set of eyes keeping your rig on the right side of the road. And speaking of night-time, there has always been some guesswork and faith in knowing when to re-enter your lane after passing a slower vehicle with a trailer. Ford now has a system called BLIS to help with this. It’s a blind spot alert system, not unlike what most manufacturers have, but BLIS has a programmable setting where you can enter the

the truck when backing; it gives the driver an on-screen notification and a warning chime. So, while these current driver-assist electronics are nothing short of miraculous in their scope, there is more to come. A quick look at the heavy truck industry gives a hint as to what’s next. Volvo Trucks of Europe has just developed a safety system that utilizes cameras and radar technology to monitor the road and activate an automatic emergency braking system in case the driver is too slow or doesn’t react – and that’s in a full-size tractor-trailer.

RV-ING: 2017 GRAND DESIGN SOLITUDE 384GK

Luxury Fifth-Wheel

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

T

he RV industry is in a continual state of change. The market demands it, and the builders themselves – when they identify new trends – move quickly to capitalize on them. In short, this explains a company like Grand Design RV. Formed by three veteran RV industry executives in 2012, they identified a trend – quality - and moved quickly to tap into it. Now, I know, every company talks about quality being a core component of its business, but admittedly some do it better than others. In the case of Grand Design, the proof is in its ever-increasing sales, and also the quality control process they follow. According to its brochures, a trailer coming off the assembly line undergoes a comprehensive final inspection – as you’d expect. However, this is where its system differs from most. Inspected units move on to a separate facility where they are again subject to a 150-point inspection. This second pre-delivery inspection catches and fixes any problems before the unit is released to the dealers. The reason I’m highlighting this marketing pitch from Grand Design is that I know one of the most irritating things owners can find in their brand-new trailer are small cosmetic flaws. It’s these little surface issues that drive owners nuts. Why? Because they feel foolish for complaining about minor rips, scrapes and blemishes, while at the same time seething about how much they paid. It’s simple human nature to want quality for your money. So, having read this lofty promo before taking the Grand Design Solitude out for my test, I resolved to find any imperfections that might have been overlooked at the factory. I tried and I didn’t find a thing. Kudos. Grand Design builds a variety of trailers; however, the Solitude fifth-wheel I took out was definitely of the luxury full-timer variety. At 40 ft. 7 in. in length, it’s got “take me south for the winter” written all over it. The price and the build quality also reflect that status. 54 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

Inside, the layout of the 384GK is traditional, with a rear salon, midship kitchen and master bedroom in the nose. Where it differs from other trailers is in the quality and quantity of the fixtures. The focal point of the space is the long kitchen island that is also the site for the dual sinks and gooseneck faucet. Nothing extraordinary about this setup – but then look above and you’ll see the intricate woodwork on the ceiling and the hanging light fixtures that illuminate the work space below. (In fact, there are multiple light fixtures throughout the trailer that add interest and accent various areas.)

This Solitude starts with a drop-frame chassis that supports a widebody (101-inches) and a very tall trailer. Its three slideouts expand the main living and kitchen area, with two of those slides being opposing. The third pulls the head of the bed in the master out further and interestingly, also moves the sink in the bathroom with it. For running gear, the Solitude uses a Trailair Rota-Flex pin box, Equa-Flex suspension above HD axles with self-adjusting brakes, and 16-inch aluminum wheels. This combination creates the most room for people inside and for cargo in the basement alike. Wall construction is aluminum and the exterior sidewalls carry a highgloss gel coat. You can walk on the roof and the tinted windows are frameless. The result of these features is a look for this trailer, over-all, which is stylish, sleek and modern. A nice feature, once you arrive at your site, is the deployment of the six-point hydraulic levelling system that will find level ground automatically.

If you turn towards the window from the island, you have the three-burner stainless steel stove (with 22inch oven) set in the centre of another long counter space with real tile as a backsplash. Above it is the vent hood and built-in convention microwave. There is no lack of prep space in this kitchen. And of course, below all those counters are drawers and cupboards, as well as above. One of these cupboard spaces is prepped to accept a dishwasher if that’s your wish. Another feature of this kitchen is a full-size hard-door pantry just beside the stainless steel 18 cu-ft. refrigerator (it has a pull-out freezer on the bottom). The dining space consists of a freestanding hardwood table with two elegant upholstered chairs and two foldable ones – a nice spacesaving innovation. The table is anchored just below a huge picture window that also opens. This lights up the eating and kitchen area and will be a joy to sit and eat at. The salon is focused on a floor-to-ceiling wall unit that houses the big-screen LED TV just above the fireplace that incorporates an electric heater. Above all are glassed cupboards for A/V storage and accessories. These include HDMI Stereo/CD/DVD/with App controls. This trailer also has exterior speakers and is prepped with cable/antenna and satellite plug-ins.

JUNE/JULY 2017 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 55

Seating, as you’d expect, is top-notch with twin theatre recliners across from the TV. These seats are powered, lit by LED and have heat and massage functions. Your guests will have to make do on the non-heated three-seat leather upholstered couch at the rear of the trailer. This couch also doubles as a Tri-Fold hide-a-bed, for those sometimes overnight guests.

A trailer like this has to be four season-capable. It’s insulated in the roof, walls and floor where it carries three layers adding up to an R-value of 45. For heat, the trailer comes with a 35K BTU highoutput furnace for the living space, and heated tanks and storage protected by a fully-enclosed underbelly. Even the low-point water drains are enclosed and heated.

The master bedroom up front is large enough to almost be called a sitting room, and it has a couple of neat features like a large walkin closet set in the nose of the trailer. Because of the weird shape of this space, this is a great use; however, Grand Design had to go beyond the normal by fitting it with cured shelves and a sloped ceiling. Double mirrored doors finish this feature nicely. The bed is a 70x80-inch King with a full headboard and ample access on both sides. It has under-bed storage and a pull-out Ottoman feature that makes for a nice spot to sit and pull your socks up.

The air conditioning consists of two “Stealth” 15K BTU air conditioners that use an advance racetrack ducting that provides 23-percent more air flow than competitors, and is two times quieter. It was a little early in the year for me to check the A/C – but the heat worked fine.

The second TV in the bedroom is mounted over a builtin residential-style dresser. Hard pocket doors maximize space from the bathroom to the bedroom and t h e c o r r i d o r. T h e bath itself is large, made more so by the slideout that carries the sink and vanity with it. The woodwork and features like the ceramic bowl sink make this an attractive space. The shower is a large one-piece fibreglass shell with built-in seat and sliding glass door. It’s supplied by a 12-gallon water heater. The overhead skylight brightens the shower and adds height. The toilet is real porcelain. 56 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017

As for towing, it’s a big trailer, no getting away from that. It rolls well and that standard Trailair pinbox sucks up a lot of the push/pull and hobbyhorsing you’d get without it. I even backed into some tight laneways and found with the position of the pin, you can easily go past 90-degrees while backing. You just have to go slow and remember that with a trailer this long, you also have to consider some tail-swing on the blind side. To that end, it can be had with a prepped rear camera setup. With a topped-out weight of 16,000 lb, you’ll also want to match your tow vehicle carefully. My Ram 3500 dually was, in fact, a bit of overkill, but on the other hand, it felt really good. Most 2500 trucks will handle this trailer and a diesel engine will supply the torque you’ll want on the long hills. Of course, I always say if you’re headed south, you’re just heading downhill anyway, right? STUCK TRUCKS

Bright side is he was already pulled over to the side of the road.

This could’ve gone much worse had he kept rolling.

His driving must not be as swift as he’d like it to be.

Rather surprising to see him get stuck out there.

Some would argue a truck that looks like that shouldn’t get stuck anywhere.

This may be our first time seeing a truck get stuck like this.

We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool Trucks Plus hat! 62 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2017
