Next-Generation 2019 Toyota TRD Pro Off-Road Models Revealed
T
oyota has unveiled the next generation of its TRD Pro Series vehicles including the Tacoma TRD Pro, Tundra TRD Pro and 4Runner TRD Pro models all of which feature a long list of impressive off-road-oriented equipment designed by Toyota Racing Development (TRD). Each of the 2019 TRD Pro models will ride on a 2.5-in. TRD Pro-exclusive Fox Internal Bypass shocks on both the front and rear that have been specifically tuned for each vehicle. The shocks offer great performance and excellent damping, making them ideal for a wide variety of driving situations. Typical off-road race vehicles traditionally have external bypass tubes on their shock bodies to fine-tune damping pressure; however, each high-tech Fox shock compactly incorporates bypass zones inside of the shock. This provides a comfortable ride during normal operation but a progressively stiffer one through the shock stroke to provide ideal bottoming resistance. The Tacoma TRD Pro is based on the TRD Off-Road grade and adds the aforementioned 2.5-in. Fox shocks that are paired with TRD-tuned springs that provide an additional 1-in. of front lift. A larger sway bar is also included to retain crisp steering, and some other TRD equipment is included as well, including an updated front skid plate and a TRD exhaust system with an accented black chrome tip. Inside, the new Tacoma TRD Pro will feature a standard moonroof and is, of course, equipped with TRD Pro-branded elements throughout including floormats, seats, and head restraints. Other distinguishing features include 16-in. TRD Pro black alloy wheels with Goodyear All-terrain Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018
tires, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, and a black TOYOTA grille, just to name a few. Finally, perhaps the most noticeable Tacoma upgrade is the addition of the TRD Desert Air intake which provides a truly offroad look and is fully functional should you get into some tough terrain where it is necessary. The Tundra TRD Pro also receives a few upgrades for 2019 including the Fox shocks, similar Rigid Industries LED fog lights to those found in the Tacoma, and LED headlights with LED accent lights that feature a unique black treatment. The truck sits on a set of 18-in. BBS forged-aluminum, five-spoke satin black wheels wrapped in Michelin all-terrain tires. The inside features TRD logos throughout, and outside has some of the same upgrades found on the Tacoma, including skid plate and exhaust. Finally, the iconic 4Runner once again receives upgrades to its TRD Pro model for 2019. The same Fox shocks found in the Tacoma and Tundra are used, as is a similar skid plate and interior items such as floor mats, shift knobs, seats and head restraints. Different from its pickup truck brethren, the 4Runner receives a new roof rack that is ideal for larger items or things that you don’t want in the cabin of the SUV. As with all new vehicle announcements these days, the TRD Pro Series vehicles feature a plethora of safety features meant to keep the driver, passengers and fellow drivers as safe as possible. Standard features include Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, Anti-lock Brakes and Smart Stop Technology, just to name a few. The Toyota TRD Pro models will be available in three colours, in the fall of this year.

AJAC Announces Its 2018 Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) has announced the winner of the 2018 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year Award. The award is one of Canada’s highest automotive accolades and was determined following a year of testing and two rounds of voting by nearly 100 voting members of AJAC. The members tested the vehicles throughout the year in a variety of different conditions with each vehicle being scored on many different factors including performance, features, technology, design, fuel consumption and value. From there, the highest-scoring vehicles in each of the six recognized utility categories were named the category winners and thus, were in the running for this prestigious award. The winners were once again voted on by AJAC members but this time critiqued more subjective qualities such as comfort, convenience and practical performance. It was after this process that it was determined that the Chrysler Pacifica was named the Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year for 2018 after winning the Best Minivan in Canada for 2018 category. The Pacifica beat out the likes of the Mazda CX-5 and CX-9, the Range Rover Velar, Acura MDX and, likely most interesting to you readers of this magazine, the Ram 1500. For a complete list of winners or for more information on AJAC itself, please visit www.ajac.ca

Nissan Reveals Smokin’ TITAN Project Vehicle with Fully Integrated Smoker and Mobile Kitchen Nissan has revealed what is probably the ultimate tailgating and barbecuing pickup truck, complete with the world’s first fully integrated in-truck-bed smoker and mobile kitchen. Dubbed the Smokin’ TITAN, the project vehicle was built specifically for barbecuing and tailgating enthusiasts and features a custom CM Truck Beds aluminum flat bed complete with a Lang BBQ smoker, three food prep stations each featuring a Partner Steel aluminum double-burner prep stove alongside a Brazilian wood cutting board. A Teton Steel custom on-board 24x24 sink and water storage system is accessible with an easy step up from the flat bed, and a Yeti Cooler can be interchanged with the water storage system when cold storage is a priority. Utilizing the TITAN’s flat load floor, an ARB 50-qt. Fridge Freezer and Slide was added to the back seat along with a custom spice rack. Since food smoking can create great amounts of heat, the TITAN’s factory bed was removed and put on a B&S Custom trailer to prevent the heat form affecting it. The bed-trailer features two Nissan TITAN Boxes as lockable dry storage for smoker pellets and wood chips and features a sliding tray that was designed to easily slide the smoker in and out of the bed. The trailer is secured by a Diamondback SE Tonneau cover and allows the user to smoke food at the tailgate and then pack it up for the trip home. In addition to the cooking equipment, the Smokin’ TITAN features a custom wrap, 20-in. ICON Alloy Alpha wheels and Nitto Terra Grappler tires. The truck, which started life as a stock TITAN XD Gas King Cab Model, will be making appearances this spring and summer at outdoor adventure shows and exhibitions.
Ram and Mopar Collaborate to Customize the All-New 2019 Ram 1500 The Ram Truck and Mopar brands recently teamed up to showcase an outdoor-sport themed 2019 Ram 1500 at the Chicago Auto Show, which has been modified with a selection of the more than 200 Mopar parts and accessories available for the brand new truck. The truck is used to highlight the large variety of Mopar products available, which have been created through thousands of hours of testing and validation. Every detail of each part has been developed in close concert with the Ram Truck engineers and designers. The Flame Red 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn Sport 4x4 truck showcased at the show has been fitted with a 2-in. Mopar lift kit that provides additional off-road clearance for the truck, and allows room for large-tread 35-in tires wrapped around Mopar 18-in. beadlock-capable wheels. Black Mopar fender flares help protect from trail hazards, while the body-length off-road aluminum running boards add both a visual and a functional upgrade as they feature a skid-resistant stepping surface made to perform well in muddy or wet conditions. One of the more notable parts featured on the new Ram was the soon-to-be-available Ram Rack which allows large gear to be secured to the truck without having to take up space in the actual truck bed. Additional parts featured on the truck in Chicago include a cold-air intake system, cat-back exhaust, 5-in. dual exhaust tips, blacked-out Ram emblems, interior floor mats, and aluminum door sill guards. New and Improved The all-new 2019 Ram 1500 has gotten better in just about every way.
he 2019 Ram 1500 marks just the second generation of this half-ton brand that has been a stand-alone T company, under the FCA umbrella, since 2009. Despite often still being referred to as the Dodge Ram, it’s been on its own for a decade now; a very successful decade in fact, with sales up by 191 percent since inception; hitting almost 700,000 sales worldwide in 2017.
While there was a mild Ram refresh in 2014 (along with the introduction of the 3.0L diesel engine), this new Ram promises innovative updates in line with an incubation period this long – and at first glance, it doesn’t disappoint.
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of FCA Canada
The look of the new sheet metal is just different enough to announce this new generation with LED adaptive front lighting anchoring a flatter, swept-back hood that now wears the brand badge – well, that and the new grille. The iconic cross-hair grille, long associated with the Ram, is now fully retired. From now on, Ram will lead with its name squarely embossed on its nose. This truck is slightly larger than its predecessor, yet it’s 225 lb lighter. Weight savings are thanks to the use of more high-strength steel and a wider use of aluminum. The stronger frame, larger brakes (14.9-in) and retuned suspension components also offer gains in payload and max trailer towing.
Monitoring including trailer coverage, Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, Ready Alert Braking, Trailer-sway Control, Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist, Parallel and Perpendicular Park, and Hill-start Assist, which uses ultrasonic sensors to help the driver perform technical manoeuvres. What is unique, though, is the four inches that have been added to the frame, which results in a huge new Crew Cab backseat - one in which the seatbacks will even recline 8-degrees. This feature was previously found only in the HD MegaCab. Supporting that frame at all four corners is a new shock system called Frequency Response Damping (FRD shocks). This technology employs a bypass valve in the shock which opens and closes as needed to soften the ride or offer firmer control during cornering. Other tech innovations include: Updated Multilink coil spring rear suspension, Active-Level four-corner air suspension, next-gen TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission, auto-retracting front air dam and frame-mounted active tuned mass modules Payload has increased to 2,300 lb and the top tow rating is now 12,700 lb; numbers that make it competitive with any of its rivals. The new aluminum tailgate is now damped and also has an integrated lift-assist feature. Inside the cab, I see the rear floor is now flat. Both of these features have been found in other trucks for a few years now – so, while noteworthy, these and a dozen other small things I saw are just examples of Ram catching up to the field. In some cases though, they’ve done that and more. This new Ram also offers Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop, Blind-Spot

along with active noise cancellation that makes this Ram interior the quietest ever. Ram’s cabin design and decor have always been good, but now it gets even better with new materials and features like an all-new switch bank with toggle switches, wireless charging dock and up to five USBs, including four type C/A ports. The new centre console also has 12 different storage configurations above which you’ll see the first 12-inch fully configurable touchscreen (optional) which includes tailor-made graphics for various Ram models. It features the fourth-generation Uconnect multimedia system with SiriusXM, in-vehicle connected services including 4G Wi-Fi hotspot and 360degree surround view camera with bird’s-eye view. A new powerful harman/kardon audio system is now available as well with 19 premium speakers, 900-watt surround sound amplifier, 10-inch subwoofer and active noise cancellation. Canadians buy twice as many Ram pickups (per capita) as do Americans. This fact went a long way towards the request, and creation of, a Canadian exclusive model for 2019 – the Sport. This truck will include all the most commonly ordered appearance features in one package. It includes a monochromatic exterior theme, body-colour door handles, mirrors and grille with all-black badging. Also a sport performance hood, dual black exhaust tips, 22-inch black accent wheels and all-black Sport-themed interior design. This includes cloth/vinyl bucket seats, black satin chrome, black headliner and a 7-inch centre cluster with Sport splash screen. Engines and transmissions in this next generation remain mostly unchanged with the 3.6L V6 Pentastar still being the standard. The 5.7L Hemi V8, though, is still the most popular choice in Canada; however, up to 20 percent of buyers are now ordering the 3.0L EcoDiesel. Pricing for the new Ram starts at $46,095 MSRP for the 4x4 Quad Cab Tradesman and walking up through the trim packages to $74,195 MSRP for the 4x4 Crew Limited Edition. New Rams are available to order now. 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018

FIRST LOOK: 2019 GMC SIERRA
Unique Identity Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of GMC Canada
F
ollowing on the heels of the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado debut in January, the newest version of the GMC Sierra was shown in downtown Detroit just recently in a converted industrial building, as gritty as the city itself. While the new Silverado was hoisted by helicopter and dropped before a crowd in Dallas as the finale to its 100th anniversary celebrations, the Sierra introduction was much more low key – seemingly as different as the two brands themselves. The Sierra is undeniably the little sister to the Silverado – particularly in the States where it outsells its GMC sibling by at least three to one. Maybe that was the reason for the cheaper show. But, General Motors wants to close that gap and they want it done without the taint of what was once known as “rebadging.” Separation and a unique identity is the strategy. This is the reason GMC has been pushing its “professional grade” message for well over a decade and also why GMC showed several new features not found on the Silverado at this debut. Driven out onto the portable stage in Detroit was a new truck with distinct sheet metal styling and two standout components. First, a convertible tailgate with multiple functions. Second, that tailgate is fixed to an industry-first carbon fibre cargo box. Neither of these is available on the Chevy. However, before dissecting the new technology, it’s worth noting that the Sierra also continues its separation from the Silverado – style-wise. Its new grille is more upright and dominant with a proportional chrome pattern. The lights are large and C-shaped anchoring the taller hood to the powerful shoulders on the truck’s front end. This is in sharp contrast to the slick, flatter, pulled back look of the new Silverado. 22 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018

The truck body itself is larger than the old model, with the small increases mostly being devoted to the interior comfort of passengers. For instance, the 2019 Crew Cab has nearly three inches of additional rear-seat legroom compared to the current model. And then there is the Denali. This trim package was introduced back in 2000, and while it is still just that, it has taken on a unique, separate identity all its own. Ask any Sierra Denali owner and they will tell you they simply refer to the truck as a “Denali.” This trim level, because of its popularity, has almost become a name brand all on its own. This is an organic marketing coup that happens only occasionally in the automotive world; GM knows it and is now working to exploit it. Knowing how Denali owners feel about their trucks, they are pumping even more upscale styling and materials inside and expanding the badging to include a Denali nameplate on the tailgate. This block-style typeface emphasizes the special nature of this key player in the Sierra lineup. The new convertible tailgate is called the MultiPro. It features six unique functions and positions. The key feature is the split function that folds half the gate down to create a second tier for loading and/or a backstop for long cargo. If the tailgate itself is down, the split function now creates an extra-wide step up into the cargo bed as well as a cut-out for easier bed access. The weight capacity is 375 pounds and the tailgate will also function as a workstation. This fits nicely with the addition of a 110V outlet added to the box. This 24 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018
tailgate will be standard equipment on Denali and SLT trucks. Less obvious during the roll-out, but perhaps more revolutionary, is the carbon-fibre box, called the CarbonPro. This innovation lands squarely into the steel vs. aluminum debate that’s been raging for a few years now. This is now a new third option, though it has yet to be priced (as it will be an option). But whether it’s superior to either of the other materials is not in question. This material is virtually indestructible. A director of the company that developed it for GMC (Continental Structural Plastics) told me that one of the tests they had subjected the bed to was loading a snowmobile with a steelstudded track into the truck bed and pinning the throttle - spinning the track in place. This uniquely Canadian-ish torture test did not damage the material.
This innovation is formed as a one-piece bed that uses purposedesigned carbon-fibre composite that is 62 lb lighter than the base steel version and offers best-in class dent, scratch and corrosion resistance. Not that GMC has shied away from aluminum. Where weight savings are possible, it’s used in doors, hood and tailgate, shaving 360 lbs off its previous weight. The standard bed continues to be made of roll-formed steel. Driver-focused technologies are also prominent in the new Sierra; among them is an electronic trailering system called ProGrade. This system includes a trailering app that features pre-departure checklist, maintenance reminders, trailer light test, trailer light diagnostics and trailer tire pressure monitoring. Inside, the Sierra offers a 3x7-in head-up display that projects vehicle info onto the windshield within the driver’s sight-line. The standard 8-inch infotainment screen offers a new smartphone-like experience, faster responses and improved voice recognition. This screen also offers a bird’s-eye view of the truck in addition to side and rear views and the advantage of backing up to trailers. Also offered is a segment-first rear camera mirror. This dual function interior mirror offers an optimized view of what’s behind you. The camera has a wider field of vision than a standard mirror and can also be tilted and enhanced. A standard glass mirror is still available. For power – this is where GMC and Chevy do share – new versions of the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines will be joined by an all-new 3.0L inline-six turbo diesel engine (late availability). The 6.2L and 3.0L engines will be paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. In Canada, where GMC and Chevrolet pretty much split the truck pie 50/50, I expect there to be just a bit of excitement over not only these unique innovations but also the best new Sierra Denali in almost a decade. Pricing has not been announced yet; the trucks go on sale this fall.

FEATURE: B.C. VINTAGE TRUCK MUSEUM
Unique Collection
The only Ford in the entire collection is this 1947 one-ton pickup. It was used during road construction in the 1950s and ‘60s, then purchased by a family in Hope, B.C. and restored by them in the 1970s. It sat in a shed for many years, until found by a local enthusiast and donated to the Museum in 2016.

T
here are car museums seemingly everywhere in North America, but far fewer exhibits dedicated just to trucks. Fewer still are the museums featuring only large commercial trucks, and such a facility is located in the Vancouver suburb of Surrey. The B.C. Vintage Truck Museum has been operated by the Surrey Heritage Society since 2012 in buildings at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds, owned by the City of Surrey. The beginnings of the collection were when local trucking magnate Bob King donated some 14 trucks to the Province of B.C. in the mid-’70s, and they were then displayed at the B.C. Transportation Museum until it was closed down in 1991. The Teamsters Union took care of the collection until 2012, when the current space was made available in Surrey and the Museum began operation. Fast forward to today, and the collection has grown to some 27 trucks, all with historical significance in the growth of the Greater Vancouver area, and British Columbia in general. However, the Museum faces a big challenge. Less than a year after receiving a Canada 150 grant to upgrade their space which enabled them to move several trucks out of storage and put them on display, they now face losing half the space. When the structure was built in 1958, it incorporated Surrey’s original Town Hall from 28 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018
This 1929 Chevy half-ton with flat deck marked the first year for the new OHV 194 cu. in. “Stovebolt” six, which stayed in production until 1962. This was one of the first trucks built with the new engine. This 1951 Chevy 3100 B.C. Tel pickup was found rusting away in a field in Nanaimo, and restored by B.C. Tel fleet shop staff in 1991. This was a typical service vehicle before vans came into use in the early 1960s.
This 1941 International K7 COE began its service life in the War effort, as a troop or equipment carrier for the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps, until 1946, at which time it was purchased by Bob King during liquidation of war assets. It was one of the trucks donated to the Province in 1974.
AARON'S 1987 Ford Bronco
A FIRST TRUCK FOR THE SECOND TIME.
There’s only one vehicle Aaron’s grandfather bought brand-new, right off the lot – his 1987 Ford Bronco. Always garaged and well-maintained, not even his ‘67 Mustang received such care. When his grandfather passed, the Bronco became Aaron’s. His goal was to restore this iconic truck to how his grandfather would have seen it for the first time on that lot in Gladwin, Michigan. At LMC Truck, we understand the special place a truck can hold in the heart of a family. Because her odometer doesn’t just count miles. It counts memories. And we want to make sure they never stop. The oldest truck owned by the museum is this very rare British-made 1914 FWD Model B, thought to have been used in the First World War, and then brought here and re-purposed for use by the B.C. Electric Company. It was taken out of service in 1929, and stored until 1974, when it was restored. “FWD” stands for Four Wheel Drive, so this must be one of the oldest such trucks in existence.
1881. The city is in the process of developing the Surrey Museum, and they would like it to include the Town Hall, which will be moved to the new site. When that small building is removed from within the larger building which constitutes half the Truck Museum, space for about ten
of the trucks could be lost depending on how the de-construction is carried out, and they may have to go back into storage – somewhere yet to be determined. All this only months after they finally got the building into a useful and attractive condition.
One of the rarest trucks in the collection, and indeed in North America, is this 1935 Dodge Airflow K52 tanker truck, one of four in existence out of 249 built, and the only one sold in Canada. It was used by Standard Oil to deliver fuel to Chevron gas stations into the 1940s. It is in the process of being restored. 30 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018
An outside view of the Museum. This is the original building with the higher roof that accommodates the larger trucks.
The oldest truck on display the day we visited in February was, ironically, not part of the permanent collection, but loaned from the B.C. Pioneer Truck Society for the Open House that weekend. The 1910 International Harvester Auto Wagon had a rear seat mounted over its pickup box, making for a multi-use vehicle before its time. It must be one of the oldest IH trucks anywhere.
“We are hoping that when the City extracts the old City Hall from our building, that we can put a roof and floor in that area of the building, and preserve it for our use,” explained Museum President Chenn Bergen. “That would keep us going another four or five years at this site, while we get our plans and funding going for a new building.” Naturally, the Museum directors and volunteers are trying to find a long-term solution, ideally a building with about 25,000 square feet, somewhere in Surrey or nearby. The City has indicated they might be able to provide a suitable piece of land, but just the building would probably cost $5 million. So now they are beginning a fundraising program to raise about $3 million of that, in hopes that the rest would come from other sources like government grants. So, at the time of this writing, the B.C. Vintage Truck Museum faces the dismantling of half of their building, starting on April 30, but are hopeful that they can continue to use that wing if it can be preserved in a usable condition. The future is uncertain, but fans of old trucks can only hope that this unique collection finds a new home where it can continue to be enjoyed for what it is – an important display of the commercial transportation history of the Lower Mainland of B.C.
This is the wing of the Museum that faces de-construction to remove the old City Hall building. Less than a year ago, it was all spruced up and put into use, with ten trucks in it.

ROAD TEST: NISSAN FRONTIER
Last Hurrah?
The current generation Nissan Frontier has definitely aged, but has it aged well? Story and photos by Gerry Frechette
I
n any automotive market segment, it seems that every model year, there is a new “latest and greatest” model, such is the pace of development. The pickup segment might be the most competitive of all, with all the manufacturers trying to out-do the other guys, with trucks that make them more profit than any other vehicle. It stands to reason, then, that at any given time, one pickup must be the oldest design, and the least technologically advanced, on the market. That truck is the Nissan Frontier, and while it may be the oldest design out there, it may surprise you to know that it has been the oldest for as long as it has.
This generation of the Frontier was introduced as a 2005 model. That’s right – the 2018 model is the 14th year of this mid-size pickup, making it perhaps the oldest vehicle currently for sale in this country. On that basis, it would be easy to write off the Frontier as a relic, not worthy to compete with all the modern pickups on the market, but that would be overlooking the value that Nissan’s truck still represents. After spending a week driving the Frontier Midnight model around rainy Vancouver, we can safely say that the positives out weigh the negatives – if you have the right mindset. The Midnight is a dress-up package, essentially, on the regular SV Crew Cab 4x4 model with V6 and automatic, for an extra $2,900. As the name implies, everything that isn’t the main body colour (white on our tester) is black, starting with what has become a common approach these days, all-black wheels. In this case, more than just their look is changed, as they are 18-inchers (versus the standard 16s) with beefy P265/60R18 M&S tires. Other than all the black trim items, the price includes some features that are optional on SV, like the Utili-track® Channel System with four tie-down cleats, and factory-applied spray-on bedliner. So, it’s an attractive package, but is it enough to make the difference in a buying decision? It should help attract those looking for a stylish truck, but we think that the Frontier needs to be looked at as a value proposition. For example, its engine is the well-known 4.0-litre DOHC V6 that has plenty of power for any use you could put the Frontier to. It is backed up by a five-speed automatic with no “modes,” and with the torquey engine, you don’t pay a big penalty in driveability with only the five gears, although the fuel consumption might suffer a bit. The NRCan rating for urban driving is 15.8L/100 km, but our manual calculations (since there was no trip computer to tell us) showed 19L in very easy driving. We call that thirsty.

While the exterior styling of the Frontier has held up well over the years, time has not been as kind to the interior design. Oh, the heated front seats have a good-looking cloth upholstery, and they are reasonably wide and supportive, but beyond them, what looked okay 13 years ago
port, two 12V outlets, and Bluetooth phone, but that was about it for connectivity or convenience on our tester. Navigation is just not available on the Midnight. On the safety front, it has ABS, Vehicle Dynamic Control, six air bags and a Rear Sonar sensor (and now a rear camera mandated by the Feds for 2018), but that’s all. There are none of the new-fangled electronic controls and warnings like Lane Departure, presumably because it would not have been possible to adapt the old platform for all that stuff. Unfortunately, being city dwellers, we had little chance to put the truck to the test in a low-traction situation, or with a full pick-up bed, or towing anything. But we can say that the Frontier drove acceptably well for a truck with few of the modern-day solutions to noise, vibration and harshness. Steering, brakes and throttle response all felt smooth and confident. So, other than purchasers of work fleets, just who will be attracted to the Frontier? Well, certainly someone who appreciates a good value in a pickup, as the SV Crew Cab V6 Automatic is nearly $10K cheaper than the comparable Toyota Tacoma. It’s a basic, honest, straightforward truck, in the spirit of older trucks – because it is older. For some who might not care about all the latest technology (maybe a “less stuff to break” point of view), the Frontier should be right up their alley. But it won’t be for long, as we are told to expect a new up-to-date Frontier later this year. And that will change the whole equation.
is not so much that now. Primarily, the dashboard and doors can be described as acres of hard plastic (the arm rests are soft, to be fair.). The rear seats have plenty of room, although the backrests are vertical and flat, not uncommon in compact crewcabs. Under those rear seats is a small depression serving as concealed storage for a small soft bag or two. There is plenty of other small storage space, with six big cup holders, and nooks and crannies all over. There are the expected features like A/C, AM/FM//Satellite audio with that welcome 2005 necessity, a CD player, along with an Aux and USB

FEATURE: FOOD TRUCKS
The Food Truck Movement Gains Momentum Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko, some photos courtesy of Wikimedia
T
here is no one defining element of Canadian cuisine. To outsiders, maple syrup and poutine often come to mind; maybe tourtière or beaver tails to the few who get out a little more. But to those who are actually familiar with Canada’s food scene, they know it to be an incredibly rich and varied place. It has developed over the years by taking a little from every culture that has crossed its path.
Waves of immigration, colonial influences, and the local traditions of indigenous peoples have all contributed to a national food culture that is as diverse as its citizens. And with the food truck industry now an expanding part of that landscape, the culturally-blended cuisine of Canada is officially on the move. And taking that show on the road means a whole new realm of aftermarket potential. To Each Their Own It might surprise some to hear that food trucks are uniquely qualified to present such diverse culinary perspectives. To so many people, they simply represent cheap and unhealthy takeaway food. But the climate is changing and many hopeful entrepreneurs see a blank canvas for high-class chow at working-class prices. For owners, food trucks provide a certain level of flexibility. The ability to easily pick up and move to another location, combined with savvy social media targeting, can allow for some pretty niche cuisines to gain a popularity they might not acquire through a traditional brick-and-mortar restaurant. Similarly, the lower start-up and overhead costs can be serious eye-candy to a young professional looking to sell something as unique as burrito-sized sushi rolls. Don’t be fooled though—this is not an easy business. Nor does it mean that these rigs aren’t still a huge investment for aspiring small business owners. Additionally, with cities limiting the number

Vintage Charm vs All-New Dependability While used models or clever retro-fittings can be cost-effective and eye-popping, anyone who has ever discovered they unwittingly purchased a lemon will tell you that there are real benefits to buying new. Most food trucks are held to the same sanitation and regulatory standards as static restaurants. That means elements like three-bay sinks, fire safety equipment, proper refrigeration, and ventilation hoods may need to be squeezed into an interior around eight square metres (or less). Add to that things like water and propane tanks, a deep fryer, an electrical box, installation panels, a back-up generator, proper plumbing, a service-bay window, awnings… you get the point.
of permits available, and places like Montreal enacting some serious regulations, the profession can be pretty sink or swim.
A fully-customized, up-to-code, neverbefore-been-used food truck built by industry professionals starts to look pretty attractive. But prospective entrepreneurs could be looking at an investment as high as $200,000, depending on the city. Most buyers opt for something mid-range, $50,000 - $90,000, and try to do much of the work themselves.
But one thing’s for certain: this market has style. While many of Canada’s best restaurants can rely on a certain “Build it and they will come” attitude, food trucks are operating on a tighter budget in a fraction of the space. That means a smaller staff, smaller menu, and smaller appliances. Many owners have opted to grab the bull by the horns by retrofitting old utility vehicles, spiced up with bright custom wraps and decals. Sure, ordering a food cart hot dog has a certain old-school endearment to it. But a pulled pork carnita-filled taco purchased from a vintage school bus that looks like a giant green gecko? Well, that’s Instagram-worthy.
When in Doubt, Call on the Aftermarket and Specialty Shops But DIYing only goes so far, right? The foodies tend to reach out to aftermarket shops for the can’t-afford-to-screw-this-up portions of a build, or when they encounter a task outside their skill set. Similarly, if they really want that truck to stand out in a crowd, professional wrapping is the only way to go. In fact, “Research shows that audiences are more readily engaged by mobile media such as fleet graphics and vehicle wraps, compared to traditional outdoor advertising such as static billboards,” wrote The Engine Block.
52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2018
Aside from larger projects like modified water pipes and tanks, engine block heaters, and ceiling-vent ductwork, aftermarket shops can cash in on small sales. Any food truck operator who hopes to survive winter without a costly mishap will need to embrace preventative maintenance. That means having things such as winter tires, de-icer, extra fluids, tire chains, fuel additives, and emergency kits on hand.
And for aftermarket shops that foresee the potential in keeping food truck clients past an initial build, the answer is simple: Canadian winters. While the street food scene is undoubtedly better suited for sunshine, cold-weather customers still need love. Why be forced inside a sad-looking food court when simple upgrades like outdoor heaters can ensure that eaters still have access to mac-and-cheese melts and hot kebabs? Well, fear not—Briggs & Stratton Corporation, headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been powering up its clients for more than a century. Today, they are one of the world’s largest producers of aftermarket gasoline engines for outdoor power equipment, as well as a leading designer, manufacturer, and marketer of products like high-quality generators and inverters. So, Briggs & Stratton likely is behind the warmth of those toasty outdoor heaters.
Low-cost additions like fresh wiper blades and RV curtains can also go a long way toward beating the chill while maintaining mobility. It Takes Two of a Kind Ultimately, successful specialty shop owners are the ones who embrace the diversity of the vehicles on the road today. And they also understand a thing or two about being married to a business. Two sentiments their food truck-owning clients share. Canada has a long history of culinary excellence. Keeping these trucks on the road in tip-top shape ensures the rich and blended tapestry of that cuisine will continue to grow and expand.

Dee Zee’s Poly Crossover Tool Box ICON Vehicle Dynamics Toyota Tundra RXT Rear Suspension System ICON Vehicle Dynamics has recently introduced its new RXT Rear Suspension System for the 2007-2017 Toyota Tundra, which is a combination of an all-new ICON multi-rate leaf spring, a hydraulic rear bump stop kit and three RXT-specific 2.5 Series rear shock options. When installed, the system is able to replace the limiting factors of the stock system with a 20-percent increase in wheel travel and the ability to adjust the leaf spring rate. The system is available in three different versions, with Option 1 just adding the new shocks, Option 2 replacing the third spring in the pack with the additional leaf, and Option 3 which adds the additional leaf between the 2nd and 3rd spring.
Dee Zee’s Poly Crossover Tool Box is able to combine the functionality of a crossover tool box with the benefits of hardened poly plastic, with one of the main benefits being the lightweight design, despite looking more like stronger and heavier aluminum. The cross centre support ties the rear and the front together, while the box boasts a double-wall lid for rigidity and features a molded brite-tread pattern and textured plastic. The overlapping flap on the lid deflects water from getting in the box, while the narrow design of it does not interfere with truck bed wheels. Additionally, the box is available in two lengths to fit both mid-size and full-size trucks. For more information please go to www.deezee.com
