Toyota Showcases Four 2021 Special Edition Trucks at Chicago Auto Show Before all of the current COVID-19 craziness began and basically eliminated normal life for the time being including auto shows, Toyota showcased four new SUV and pickup truck variants at the Chicago Auto Show back in February with all arriving later this year as 2021 models. First up are Trail Special Editions of the Tacoma, Tundra and 4Runner which are set to go on sale during the summer of this year. All put emphasis on extra storage and convenience with unique styling and exclusive content. All three Toyota Trail models will be based on the SR5 models and will be available in Army Green and Cement and, although they won’t be considered limited editions, production volume will be low. All models feature black exterior badging plus black seats with tan stitching. The Tacoma Trail will feature a set of dark grey 18-in. TRD Off-Road wheels with Kevlar All-Terrain tires and a 115-volt power outlet in the bed to add versatility. The Tundra Trail features a bold chrome grille from the 1794 edition with colour-keyed surround plus specialedition wheels. Finally on the Trail models, the 4Runner Trail boasts dark gray TRD Off-Road wheels and a Yakima LoadWarrior rooftop cargo basket for added utility. Additionally, the 4Runner features a custom 40-quart cooler and sliding cargo tray with a lockable lid, freezergrade gasket, large builtin drain plug and a flat top to act as a table surface or seat. Having already introduced a Nightshade Edition of the Corolla, Camry, 4Runner and Sienna, Toyota also showcased a new Tacoma Nightshade model which includes black leather seating and slightly sinister looking black exterior trim which includes a darkened chrome grille, black mirror caps and black door handles. Further distinguishing the Nightshade edition of the Tacoma are Dark Smoke 18-in. alloy wheels, black exhaust tip and fog light bezels.

A Good Truck There are plenty of reasons to like the updated 2020 Nissan Titan XD

s quickly as it began, it was over. That’s what will be remembered of Nissan’s foray into the world A of diesel pickups with its Cummins-powered Titan XD, a heavy-duty pickup that tried to offer halfton customers a right-sized alternative to other, larger 2500s. For 2020, the Titan XD lives on with its

heavy-duty components, but no longer with diesel power under the hood, leaving it with a sole gasoline engine option. Build choices have been stripped away as well, leaving the 2020 Titan XD with a single configuration: 4x4 Crew Cab. Nissan didn’t just subtract from the truck for 2020 though, adding a swath of new interior appointments, tech features and fresh styling to help keep it relevant in an increasingly fast-moving truck market.

Story and photos by Stephen Elmer, additional photos courtesy of Nissan

Before we look at the new stuff, we have to answer the more basic question: why go XD? Nissan’s answer to that question is towing, though with a maximum capacity of 11,040 pounds on the gooseneck (10,880 pounds on the standard hitch), the numbers don’t necessarily scream heavy hauler. It’s when you look underneath the XD’s skin that you start to see the differences. Upsized 3.5-inch axle tubes and a 9.84-inch rear differential are more robust than those found on the Titan, same goes for the 14.42-inch front and 14.4-inch rear ventilated brake rotors. More pressure is added to the brake system thanks to a special pump, and the fully boxed frame is reinforced to help handle the weight, not to mention it is just bigger.

Going XD gets you a truck that is three inches taller, 11.8-inches longer in wheelbase and 14.8-inches longer overall than the standard Titan half-ton. Of course, this is a much heavier truck as well, with Platinum Reserve luxury models tipping the scales at 6,753 pounds. Max payload is a respectable 2,450 pounds. One of the issues with the Titan XD since its inception (in this author’s humble opinion) has been some of the capacities cited, as selling a truck as a heavy half-ton alternative that doesn’t beat those other half-tons when it comes to towing is a tough task. On paper this is true, but in the real world, the XD does offer something the others won’t: confidence at the limit. The truth of the situation is that a heavier truck built with larger components will tow better and more confidently when fully loaded than a truck that is lighter. That is the XD’s reason for being, maximum confidence with big loads. And all the changes Nissan made reinforces that mission. To tell the 2020 XD apart from previous years, simply look at the headlights, which now have a more aggressive “double boomerang” design, not only making the truck appear angrier but also producing 120 percent more light, according to Nissan. A new front bumper, fog lights, badging and wheel designs also give away that this is the 2020, with the styling changes being just enough to keep the Titan feeling fresh. The most important of the updates might just be a new nine-speed transmission, though more power is also available from the 5.6-litre gas V8 engine. Overall output has been cranked up to 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, an increase of about

12 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2020

10 for both numbers. There is a catch with the newly rated output though: it’s only available on premium fuel, and comes thanks to new ECU tuning that can harness that power of the extra octane. Putting in regular is fine, but power numbers then remain unchanged at 391 hp and 401 lb-ft. Regardless of which fuel type you put in, a new 4.0 rear end, only found in the XD, is also contributing to the newfound power in the pedal. And smooth, strong power is the name of the game, as the XD pulls hard from a standstill and continues to power through all of its quick-changing gears. A throaty growl is part of the package as well, making this one of the better sounding trucks with a gas V8 on the market.

feeling is reinforced by the brand new 9.0-inch touchscreen in the centre stack, capable of running Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. A wi-fi hotspot is built into the upgraded screen as well, allowing it to access over-the-air software updates. NissanConnect Services is available on Titan XD as well, offering owners a suite of convenience and safety features like remote access, HD Traffic, Google Places and more. The V8’s singing from under the hood is accompanied by an available Fender Premium Audio system, coming with 12-speakers, a

Mechanically this truck is ready for the biggest loads you throw at it, and new interior appointments make sitting inside this rig a nice place to be. A new gauge cluster brings sharp visuals, from the graphics on the 7.0-inch screen to the font of the speedometer itself, that catch the eye and bring a feel of modernity to the truck. That

subwoofer and 485-watts powering it all. Of every audio system on the market, this has to be one of the nicest to listen to, with deep rich tones shining through. After a few hundred kilometres behind the wheel of the new 2020 Titan XD, another aspect of the truck became more apparent: how APRIL/MAY 2020 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 13

comfortable the front seats are. Nissan calls them “Zero Gravity” seats, a marketing line that ties into the fact that NASA apparently helped develop them. Rocket science or not, there is obviously something special that has gone into the seats in the Titan XD, which offer the perfect blend of soft comfort and firm support. Nissan sells the Titan XD in Canada in five different flavours, with pricing starting at $60,998 for the SV model and stretching up to $78,398 for the top trim Platinum Reserve. Another strong selling point for Nissan pickups is the warranty, stretching to five years or 160,000 kilometres of comprehensive coverage, the longest warranty you’ll get on a pickup in Canada. There are plenty of reasons to like the 2020 Nissan Titan XD, from its strong V8 to its comfy seats and new technology, but without one standout feature or capability claim, it’s hard to see exactly why buyers might stray from their already chosen truck brand. If a Cummins diesel couldn’t move the XD, these updates aren’t likely to do the trick, and I fear that the XD model as a whole could be following the diesel down the path to obsolescence soon. But trust me, I hope I’m wrong, because the Titan XD is a good truck. 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2020

FEATURE: TIRES & WHEELS SELECTION

Knowledge is Power Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko

A

s the spring wheel and tire season settles in, the automotive industry finds itself in a particularly turbulent time. The coronavirus pandemic poses unprecedented challenges to every facet of the supply chain, as manufacturing plants encounter temporary closures, shipments face quarantine, and shop owners suffer driedup sales funnels. Also troubling is the realization that the long-term economic ramifications have yet to manifest and already Michelin Group’s recent market data is showing a nine-percent year-overyear decline in the global passenger and light truck tire market. One thing is very clear, though: In an industry that grows more globally interconnected by the day, knowledge is power. The brands highlighted in this article certainly possess a lot of it, evident in the way they manoeuvre these challenging times, as well as how they marry sophisticated vehicle designs with consumer wish lists. Undeniably, global economics are impacted right now—and that includes the automotive aftermarket—but it hasn’t stopped some of the industry’s most renowned names from wowing truck and offroad enthusiasts with an incredible spring selection. Current Pulse of the Wheel and Tire Market According to SEMA Market Report data, tire sales comprised an impressive $2.46 billion in 2019, with aftermarket wheels carving out a sizable chunk as well, roughly $1.32 billion. This indicates that, even as new vehicle sales plateau, trade tensions rise, and consumer demands shift, wheel and tire manufacturers keep on rolling. But that’s not to say they haven’t been affected. “The tariffs and subsequent tariff reductions played havoc with pricing and inventory. A 20x10 wheel is now tariffed at 15-percent less than a 20x9—it’s insanity,” Dan Guyer, Category Manager of Wheels and Tires at Keystone Automotive, tells The SHOP Magazine in its February 2020 Key Performance Indicators Report. “We’ve seen smaller wheel brands go out of business because the tariffs simply made their wheels too expensive.” 16 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2020

Similarly, mergers and acquisitions continue to disrupt the market, streamlining distribution channels and affecting competition. While these joint ventures undoubtedly aid the transference of exciting new technology and manufacturing processes, they also impact independents who lack large financial investors and regular infusions of capital. In addition to these obstacles, manufacturers must also contend with rapidly-changing trends, exacerbated by social media and television. It’s not enough to throw things at the wall and see if they stick; companies must introduce new styles that are relevant—and they must do so consistently. This has become particularly evident in recent years, as OEMs churn out a remarkable number of new and revised models sporting fresh designs and convenient pointof-sale wheel and tire packages. “One reason why tire sales remain robust could be the fact that the sheer number of tread patterns and available sizes has never been more varied,” writes Douglas McColloch, Senior Editor of SEMA News. “From sticky-compound off-road treads to ultra-grippy track tires, there’s a tire for just about any road surface, vehicle application, wheel diameter or driving style.” The light truck/SUV segment in particular shows sustained growth, with off-road and all-terrain options gaining in popularity. At the 2019 SEMA Show alone, Yokohama nabbed a New Product Award for its rugged Geolandar X-AT; Mickey Thompson introduced the Baja Pro XS light truck tire in ten sizes ranging from 35 to 58 inches tall, as well as adding 15 sizes to its Baja Boss extreme mud terrain tire; and Falken debuted the Wildpeak A/T Trail, an all-weather tire designed specifically for the growing CUV market. So, Where is the Market Heading? Current Advancements The baseline characteristics of tires haven’t changed much—consumers want style and longevity, low cost of ownership and reliability. “Ride comfort and handling are key to the modern vehicle and that starts in the manufacturing process,” says Dennis Teed, Senior Ac-

In the case of the Ford franchise, “You have to be certified for electric vehicles and there’s different levels. We’re now going into Level 2, preparing for full-electric vehicles at a higher volume. There are a lot of special tools, hoists, safety equipment, things like special gloves required for handling high-voltage components—they actually have an expiry date,” says Carson.

count Manager, Canada Falken Tire Corporation. This, coupled with a demand for versatility in construction and performance, most certainly has given rise to the recent boom in the A/T market. “Performance and power continue to increase in the Light Truck category. Falken’s success in the Wildpeak family of product is our construction and durability,” continues Teed. “Falken combines patented construction with aggressive styling, a great option for everyday driving. Our mindset may be on spring, but the company carries a full winter snowflake rating, which means one set of tires is good year-round. This is especially appealing to those living in Canadian provinces with strict winter tire regulations.” So, where is the market heading? Technology is changing the game, from advanced molds, laser carving tools, treads, and test equipment to material changes such as different resins, silicas, and aramid fibers. “Tiremakers have made it their primary commitment to produce ever more technically-advanced tires (i.e., with sensors to measure tread depth, temperature and provide real-time alerts to drivers), run-flat tires including self-sealing tires, self-inflating tires, air-free tire technologies and reduced noise or noise-dampening tire technology (important for quiet electric vehicles),” writes Janine Young in Tire Review Magazine. For Falken, tire compound (polymer) and manufacturing process enhancements will continue to be a focus to ensure superior consumer products in all categories. Future Advancements The automotive industry has laid the critical ground work for the next tidal wave—electric and autonomous vehicles. “I believe the vehicle changes over the next ten years (electric, autonomous, etc.) will have the greatest impact on tire technology changes. Utility versus performance,” says Teed. Jim Carson of Blackstock Ford and Bad Dog Modifications in Ontario agrees that the tipping point for such mainstream integration is likely a little over a decade away. Dealerships like his, as well as tire manufacturers, are busy preparing for the unique challenges of such a shift. “We’ve seen this before, in terms of disruptive technology and at a very fast pace,” he adds, referencing the rise of electronic fuel injection. “There’s a lot of questions out there that we don’t know the answers to, but there’s still going to be a role for dealers. EVs are allowing people to think outside the box.” 18 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2020

As it applies to tire manufacturers, higher wear resistance is critical since traditional tires wear 30-percent faster on EVs than on conventional vehicles. “EV tires require optimized footprint shape and contact pressure distribution to avoid irregular wear. Maximizing battery range requires continued reduction of rolling resistance, and the additional weight of EVs may require even lighter-weight tires. Quiet electric vehicles require emphasis on noise reduction on top of existing pressure from labeling schemes,” continues Young. As for autonomous vehicles, expect more “smart tire” advancements, such as complex sensors that collect data on routine wear and damage, as well as Bluetooth capabilities to transmit that data both to the vehicle and the manufacturer to predict repairs and inform future product development. Manufacturers like Bridgestone and Goodyear are already engaging consumers on the concepts of such technology. For example, at CES 2020, “Bridgestone demonstrated its digital twin tire technology, using tire sensors and proprietary knowledge to generate specific, actionable predictions in connected vehicles to enhance the vehicle’s safety,” writes Traction News. Similarly, Goodyear launched its unique ‘AndGo’ service platform, which “connects its service networks, intelligent tires, and predictive software to help consumer fleets schedule routine maintenance and reduce downtime.” The Toyo Tire corporation announced “that it has developed tire sensing technology that visualizes tire performance while driving in real time by using AI and digital technologies to detect information on the tire condition including tire wear and load, and road conditions which change due to weather and other factors”. “Automotive tires will need to provide more intelligent information and communication functions, offer enhanced precision and operations management for vehicle control, and provide information to support maintenance.” Consumer Checklist When it comes to shopping for wheels and tires, it’s okay to let Instagram serve as inspiration but turn to reputable brands and retailers to guide the path to purchase. Given the complexity of modern vehicles, advanced driver assistance systems can actually malfunction when paired with the wrong wheel and tire combinations or if alignment and recalibration is incorrect, warns SEMA. Not to mention—and what we really care about—there are a lot of variables to consider when investing in wheels, tires, and suspension. “From the tire side, selecting a brand with a quality reputation and warranty support is always a good choice. Working with a performance retailer who knows your type of truck will recommend the best package and lift solution for appearance, ride, and performance,” says Teed. As with any other purchase, be an informed shopper. Do your homework—pay attention to online reviews, industry recognition, and retailer recommendations. And remember: knowledge is power.

The 2020 Rebel EcoDiesel I drove is a significantly different truck from the Rebel that launched in 2015. That truck was more or less a trim/styling package. But each year, the sales success of the

Rebel has been rewarded by a growing list of real off-road features. Today, a Ram Rebel features aggressive 32-inch all-terrain tires, a one-inch factory lift, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential (standard), multi-link rear coil spring suspension, full skid plate protection and integrated tow hooks. The two-speed 4WD transfer case features shift-on-the-fly controls and also works with a new Hill Descent Control system. So, while the standard powertrain on the Rebel is the 5.7L V8 Hemi engine (395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque) my truck had the optional 3.0L EcoDiesel (newly redesigned; now making 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque). In the case of the Rebel, though, its not just about the available diesel, it’s about the new colour schemes and design cues that set it apart. Just look at the interior theme for example, where aggressive tire tread patterns criss-cross the seats. I noted while driving that the comfort and quiet of the truck are only outdone by the quiet of this new diesel, although when wound up, that added torque is very evident during acceleration, coming on also from start-off with almost no turbo lag. With late March snow still covering my IronWood test site north of the city, I also had an unexpected chance to exercise that increased torque (and the rear electronic locker) just getting to my barn to unload some pipes. Despite an underlying layer of ice, the power, those tires and the body lift pushed through snow drifts that to a lesser truck might have been a sticky situation. So, after a year’s absence from the market (as a result of having to re-certify its engine with the EPA who flagged certain emissions violations on the earlier gen of diesel) the EcoDiesel is back and it’s completely redesigned.

in small trucks back in the ‘80s we’d rather forget about). Rest assured the other Detroit builders will follow suit.” And, of course, they have. Mainly because of the early sales results Ram recorded. At the time, Ram said it expected the 3.0L to be around five percent of its total sales for the 2014 model year. However, by the end of 2014, orders were closer to 20 percent of the total. That demonstration of small diesel market acceptance truly paved the road for the diesel choices we have today.

This newest EcoDiesel produces the highest half-ton diesel torque on the market – hitting 480 lb-ft. In part, this also results in the highest available diesel half-ton tow rating of 12,560 lb and this engine is also expected to lead the segment in fuel economy. These significant updates put the Ram back into direct competition with Ford and GM; however, as for the longest history in small diesel, Ram has them beat. In late fall of 2013, the pickup world was rocked with the introduction of a light-duty diesel engine in the Ram 1500 pickup. At the time, I wrote, “For Ram this marketing move beats its competitors to the punch, so to speak (despite there being some small diesels

In fact, we were so impressed with that original diesel offering (by “we” I mean the Canadian Truck King Challenge judges), it was the winner of the 2014 Canadian Truck King Challenge. That truck was a 2014 Ram 1500 powered by the 3.0L EcoDiesel with the then new 8-speed transmission. Still, as many buyers know, that original EcoDiesel, manufactured by VM Motori of Italy, did develop issues which then led to the troubles with the EPA and the suspension of sales for a year. For these reasons, it’s important to know that the new engine is very different from that original offering. First, it was designed by FCA engineers in Auburn Hills, MI. Assembly is done by the FCA Cento facility in Ferrara, Italy – based on this American design. It was a process that did much more than just tweak the original.

Below are listed the significant design changes to the new EcoDiesel. These account for its improved dynamic and fuel economy performance according to FCA.

Whether you order the gas or diesel engine in your new Ram, you are also getting a host of features in these 2020 trucks. Some new, some updated, but all adding to the Ram experience.

• A new-generation water-cooled turbocharger with variable geometry turbine (VGT) increases efficiency and responsiveness during transient conditions

For instance, this year, the Ram 1500 features up to 12,750 lb of towing capability (5.7L Hemi V8) and 2,300 lb of payload. Ram’s eTorque mild hybrid system also adds improved fuel efficiency to both the V6 and V8 gas engines. Uconnect 4C can be ordered with a 12-inch touchscreen that features split-screen capability, 360-degree

• Redesigned cylinder head intake ports improve swirl and flow, increasing performance and fuel economy. • The exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system has been updated to a dual loop (low and high pressure) system. The added lowpressure circulation draws gases after the diesel particulate filter, thus minimizing turbocharger energy losses, which increases fuel economy. • The compression ratio has been optimized to 16.0:1 from 16.5:1 • High-pressure (29,000 psi/2,000 bar) direct-injection fuel injector nozzles were redesigned to match the newly designed and optimized combustion chamber. • Lightweight aluminum alloy pistons were completely redesigned to include thinner rings and low-friction coating on the pin and side skirts to reduce losses. • NVH has been reduced by off-setting piston pin by 0.3 mm from the centreline, thus minimizing mechanical noises. • The lower portion of the two-piece oil sump uses a lightweight sandwiched polymer/metal material that further reduces NVH. • The dual vacuum pump system uses electric and a new mechanical low-friction pump with new blades that improve overall system efficiency

Ride and handling use a class-exclusive link-coil rear suspension system or the optional Active-level four-corner air suspension. The price model for trucks equipped with the third-gen EcoDiesel starts as a $5,800 option added to the base price of Tradesman and Big Horn. For normally equipped 5.7L Hemi V8 trucks add $3,900. This applies to Sport, Rebel, Laramie, Longhorn and Limited. Trucks are available at dealers across Canada now.

2020 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year Story by Gerry Frechette he Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) has once T again concluded the lengthy process of evaluating and voting on the many new vehicles its members have driven over the past year, to come up with the 2020 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year.

There is no “Truck of the Year” category, as anything that is not a car is called a Utility by AJAC, so that includes Pick-ups, Minivans and SUVs. Of course, there were plenty of the latter, (19 in four separate classes), with no new minivans except for the Chrysler Pacifica entered in the Electric Vehicle class, which comprised eight vehicles. As for actual pick-up trucks, there were three. So, on the right is the list of vehicles entered, and how they were whittled down to category winners, which in all cases, a vehicle must be, to be eligible for overall Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year. The first-listed vehicle in each category, highlighted in red was the category winner, with the announcement made at the Montreal International Auto Show in January. The last-listed vehicles (in brackets) were entered in the contest, but did not make it past the initial “top three” voting results. On Feb 13, 2020, at the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto, the overall winner was announced, and the Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year is, once again, the Jaguar I-Pace electric SUV. The I-Pace, which already had the distinction of being the first battery electric vehicle ever to win an overall AJAC award in 2019, has added to its list of achievements with unprecedented back-to-back overall wins. This award was the culmination of months of testing and evaluation on roads and conditions from coast to coast by nearly 70 of the country’s most experienced automotive journalists (including the author). Ballots are scored anonymously on many different factors, including performance, features, technology, design, fuel consumption and value. The overall winners, including the Mazda3 which was named the 2020 Canadian Car of the Year, were selected from across 51 entries, including last year’s category winners and this year’s next-generation or significantly updated vehicles. Voting data was collected anonymously from more than 1,200 ballots. 32 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2020

FIRST LOOK: 2020 NISSAN TITAN

New Design Cues

or 2020, Nissan has done a mid-cycle refresh on the Titan. Physically, the key change is to the grille and front bumper - taking on what Nissan calls the “Warrior look” (this refers to a Warrior concept truck shown at the Texas Auto Show a number of years ago). In addition, each trim level package will feature a different grille treatment. This is new, as are 18- and 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. These new design cues should satisfy the truck owner’s desire for personalization; certainly that is what Nissan is aiming for. Other exterior updates include LED headlights and LED Daytime Running Lights, which were also inspired by the Warrior concept. Further design changes are also found in the interior and accommodation features. Infotainment and technology updates are also part of the refresh. However, the headline Nissan is pushing is all about new power numbers. The 5.6litre Endurance V8 is the one and only powerplant, but it has been re-tuned to hit 400 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque – both numbers best-in-class for the half-ton segment. Add to this the fact that Titan now matches a new 9-speed automatic transmission to this engine, and this refresh takes on the appearance of a full generational update. By replacing the previous 7-speed transmission, the new 40 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2020

gearbox creates more torque, smoother acceleration and a quicker 80-to-110 km/h time – by a full second. A taller cruising gear aids fuel economy as well. The Back Story Nissan’s full-size pickup truck, the Titan, has been working hard to carve out a market share for itself. Since its introduction in 2016, it’s showed that it is willing to take on the domestic brands, and while sales growth is slow, there is progress. Its strategy has been to

compete directly by being just like the other guys. Look at its backbone design. Titan utilizes a fully boxed, full-length ladder frame. The front suspension is double-wishbone, and a rigid rear axle suspension utilizes leaf springs and leaf bushings, along with twin-tube shock absorbers. Hefty stabilizer bars are utilized front and rear. PRO-4X models are upgraded to Bilstein mono-tube off-road shocks. Hydraulic cab-mounts help isolate occupants from the chassis. Braking is provided by a four-wheel disc system that utilizes ventilated discs, front and rear, along with a hydraulic power assist. All Titans come standard with 4WD which features a shifton-the-fly two speed transfer case which works with its other off-road systems: Hill Start Assist, Limited-Slip Differential, Hill Descent Control (Pro-4X) and electronic locking rear differential (Pro-4X). Interior Because the Titan design team calls La Jolla, CA home, they “get” the North American truck buyer’s desire for more and more comforts and connectivity. In this regard, the last-gen Titan started out strong and this new update continues this trend. New on Crew Cab models is an available Dual Panel Panoramic Moonroof, one of the largest in the segment. Every 2020 Titan gets front and rear outboard Zero Gravity seats. Heated and cooled front seats are available, while heated front seats come standard in models with captain’s chairs. Heated rear seats are standard on leather trim packages. New materials for seats, trim and finishers are also included for each grade level, while interior storage has increased and additional assist grips will make getting in and out of the vehicle easier. Electronics For connectivity, Nissan keeps pace with a standard 8-inch centre display (or optional 9-inch screen) that is the portal for Titan next-generation software that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Titan’s internal Wi-Fi router allows rear seat passengers to stream individual content (subscription required). Up to seven devices can be connected.

In the instrument cluster, a 7-inch display gives the driver information and it’s customizable. For instance, the 2020 Titan features an enhanced Off-Road Gauge that displays tire angle, relative pitch and roll angles. These new systems also allow over-the-air software updates. This feature will keep safety, security, traffic and infotainment systems up to date automatically. For a sound system, Nissan reached out to Fender with its audio expertise. This available premium audio system includes 12 speak-

includes Intelligent Forward Collision Warning, Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent Driver Alertness and Traffic Sign Recognition – for when you just aren’t paying attention. Cargo Bed For 2020, LED lighting has been added (at four locations) to brighten the bed at night. Also, the new grille by trim-level strategy will extend to the tailgate. Each grille version gets a companion tailgate look. For instance, PRO-4X features a black finisher, while Platinum Reserve shows off a stain chrome finisher. Also available in the bed are dual lockable storage boxes, which are standard on Titan XD PRO-4X Luxury and Platinum Reserve. Note that unlike other pickup bed storage boxes, the Titan units are accessible from inside the bed and are also removable. Nissan also offers a spray-on bedliner, 110V plug and damped tailgate. Towing Right from its introduction, Titan has put its towing ability right up front. For 2020, it again emphasizes this strength with an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC), Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hookup operation – including checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights. Also, there is a rear-view monitor with trailer guides. The Titan’s max towing capacity is 9,370 lb, while max payload capacity is 1,680 lb (when properly equipped).

ers, a Bassman Subwoofer, 485-watt, 9-channel amplifier and Panasonic’s proprietary Acoustic Motion Control. Safety Technologies Titan has bundled together a host of driver safety and assist features under the umbrella of Standard Safety Shield 360. These include Rear Automatic Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, High Beam Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Warning and Lane Departure Warning. New Colours There are four new colours being added to a palette of eight total exterior colours. Colour availability is matched to model grades. The new colours are Super Black, Red Alert, Baja Storm (PRO-4X) and Cardinal Red Metallic (Platinum Reserve). Carryover colours include Gun Metallic, Pearl White (Platinum Reserve), Glacier White and Deep Blue Pearl. These trucks should be arriving at Canadian dealers this spring.

STUCK TRUCKS

Usually it’s off the pavement where trouble happens. This time it’s in.

At least it looks like it was a nice night.

Someone didn’t judge the depth quite right.

Over/Under on her making that jump?

This kind of looks set up, but either way they’re getting that truck outta’ there.

Sometimes full throttle isn’t the best way to get out of a sticky situation.

We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool Trucks Plus hat! 54 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2020
