ord has announced an all-new model for its ever popular F-150 half-ton pickup called the F-150 Rattler, which is a distinctive, rugged, entry-level addition to the lineup. The truck is perfect for adventure-seekers and comes standard with four-wheel drive. It is built off the XL series with FX4 components, including skid plates, in order to ensure a confident off-road experience should the situation arise. An electronic rear-locking differential is also included, as is hill descent control, specially tuned off-road shock absorbers and all-terrain tires. The truck will feature a dual exhaust system that provides an aggressive, bold sound and sits on painted 18-in. aluminum wheels. F-150 Rattler badging is featured on the fender vents while rattlesnake-inspired graphics further add to its unique look. Inside, Onyx seats are featured with bronze accents and stitching to match the trim on the instrument panel. Exterior colours will include Oxford White, Avalanche, Iconic Silver, Carbonized Gray, Antimatter Blue, Stone Gray, Agate Black and Rapid Red TriCoat. Pricing information has not yet been released, but given the fact Ford themselves used the words entry level in the announcement, the hope is that it will be priced like such a model. The 2023 Ford F-150 Rattler is expected to go on sale later this year and we will keep you posted on any more information that comes out prior to then. Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2022

Ford Debuts Special-Edition Bronco Everglades Ford has announced it is releasing a new, special-edition model of the Bronco called the Bronco Everglades, which is available as a four-door model and is meant to up the ante in terms of off-road capability. The Everglades model features a class-exclusive signature snorkel, which runs up the passenger side A-pillar and optimizes vehicle performance in dust, snow and water by raising the engine air intake above such conditions. It uses two adjustable plates that change the direction of the inlet based on the trail and weather conditions you find yourself in. Also included is an integrated front bumper-mounted Warn Zeon 10-S winch that features 10,000 lb. capability and a 100-ft. synthetic line. The model

Toyota 4x4 Truck Owners Drive Essential Workers to Vancouver Island Hospitals After Rare Snowstorm Canada’s West Coast experienced an abnormal amount of snow this past winter which left many residents unable to drive or get to work. Back in December, more than 100 Toyota 4x4 drivers on Vancouver Island used their vehicles to drive health care workers and other essential staff to their jobs at local hospitals during a particularly bad stretch of weather. “As a community of Toyota 4x4 enthusiasts, driving in the snow is no challenge for us, so when the Vancouver Island Health Authority reached out for support, our members were happy to lend a helping hand,” said Shelby Newcombe, one of the administrators of the “Vancouver Island 4x4 & VIHA Staff Transportation” group on Facebook. “During the two-week snowstorm, we were proud to provide more than 1,000 rides to health care and essential workers.” Significant snowfall is somewhat rare on B.C.’s west coast and even rarer on Vancouver Island and many residents aren’t very comfortable driving in it. Luckily, members of the Toyota 4x4 Facebook Community stepped up and provided rides for those essential workers. “I contacted the Vancouver Island Health Authority directly several years ago to provide phone numbers for myself and a few others in the group who were interested in helping,” Shelby explained, and also said that the volume of requests skyrocketed very quickly and a dedicated group had to be setup. Toyota took notice of these kind gestures and is working with group admins to provide drivers with gas gift cards and a Toyota toque to keep them warm for next year.

also comes standard with a protective safari bar, rock rails and steel bash plates. Squared front and rear wheel arches are another unique look that will be featured on the Everglades model, complete with matching fender flares to further enhance the off-road look. Inside, the Bronco Everglades will feature standard marine-grade vinyl seats and rubberized washout flooring plus new Urban Green accents that put a subtle colour touch on the grab handles, air vents and seat stitching. Under the hood is the 2.3L EcoBoost engine that provides 300 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, paired to a SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission. The new model is set to arrive this summer. Long Time Coming The Toyota Tundra has been fully redesigned for 2022

A

fter what seems like a span of years running longer than that of the Maple Leafs’ last Stanley Cup win (or playoff series win), the Toyota Tundra pickup has been fully redesigned for 2022.

There’s new styling, all sorts of new interior tech and most importantly of all, gone is the iForce V8 engine family that’s powered these babies since the beginning, replaced by a 3.5L twin-turbo V6 with a hybrid option. On the styling front, it’s not hard to see the changes; everything that they could change, they have. The headlight lenses are more aggressive than ever (and more aggressive than most of the competition), the blacked-out grille is a behemoth and the overall lines have been chiselled at, providing visible fender flares, super blocky bumpers and muscular hood. It looks every inch the modern truck, even if some of the curves are hidden by the dark Army Green paint job seen here.

Story and photos by Dan Heyman

Inside, the environs of my TRD Off Road spec vehicle – that’s a $6,000 option package that adds a heated steering wheel, heavy-duty hitch receiver, blind spot monitor and a few other bits and bobs – is a surprisingly sporting affair. The switch to TRD can be readily seen inside; the logo appears on the chunky steering wheel (which also gets a very race car-esque red centring band) and shift lever – even its stubbiness makes it seem like it would be at home in a smaller vehicle. I was pleasantly surprised, actually, by how present all this TRD-ness is. It’s contrasted, of course, by the blocky and flared surfaces you’d expect from a truck like this. The drive mode select knob, transfer case switch, HVAC vent shapes, gauge cluster surround hood – all ultra chunky, built to last. When you think about it, it all makes sense; while it may be the bigger truck, it’s actually the Tundra that sits in the shadow of its smaller Tacoma sibling, as popular as the latter is, and it’s clear that much attention has been paid to providing some of the Tacoma’s stylistic vibe to the larger truck, both in terms of interior and exterior styling. For its part, however, the Tundra takes the Tacoma – and most other Toyotas – to the cleaners when it comes to interior tech. That’s because it gets the latest version of Toyota’s infotainment tech that provides a sharper display, is more responsive to touch inputs and just looks better in general. My truck had the standard 8-inch display; a 14-incher can be optioned as well, while all models get a 4.2-inch TFT display between the gauges. You will have to upgrade to Limited spec, however, if you

want wireless charging. There is a slightly angled but flat surface that makes for a pretty good smartphone spot, though smaller devices may slide around a little. For those who spend time with work gloves on and don’t like the idea of an all-touch display, never fear; there’s a traditional volume knob and a host of traditional “hard” buttons and toggles below the central display for all your seat heater and climate needs. Below that, we find big buttons for the locking differential, hazards and traction control system. It’s all so big and accessible that even someone in a Hurt Locker-style suit and gloves could operate the controls. When it comes to cabin space, the front seat feels like you’re sitting in a massive space. The seats are well-padded (and finished in cloth here) and while they won’t support your ribs like something out of a sports sedan, there’s enough support and adjustability here to keep you comfortable, even on longer drives. The rear seat on my particular truck is the smaller of the two available options, my truck being of the Double Cab variety as opposed to the full-sized CrewMax that serves as your only other choice. So, rear seat legroom is at a premium; not the kind of cab you want to move your crew around in. Better you flip the bottom cushion up and use the area for storage – but that’s not a perfect solution, either, in that we don’t have a flat load floor here. There is transmission tunnel intrusion and coupled with the fixed underseat storage bins, there’s precious little floor space for your gear. The SR trim that my tester starts life as can be had with two bed lengths: a 6.5-foot number as seen here, and an 8-foot option as well. I like how the shorter bed length adds some agility to the Tundra, but coupled with the smaller cabin and its less-useful floor, this 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2022

is not the spec to opt for if you’re looking to make your Tundra work. Having said that: all beds are built using a mix of aluminum and composite materials for a lightweight and strong affair, and can be had with a power tailgate that can be flipped down via a button mounted into the left rear taillight for ease of access. A power tailgate step also comes included. My tester? Well, its tailgate and box are pretty basic. No trick release, no bed access aid of any kind. The bed itself is also pretty basic with no power outlets, supplemental lights or storage bins of any kind, just a couple of tie-downs and some adjustable cleats. Could have used a little more content in this regard, but of course no lights or trick power tailgate release does mean there’s less that will break. In this spec, however, it will tow over 5,000 kilos and haul 800 kg, making it the most capable 4x4 in the line-up. TRD Off Road spec also adds Bilstein monotube shocks that have been specially-tuned to keep things as copasetic as possible offroad, and as comfortable as possible on-road. While we didn’t have the opportunity to do any heavy off-roading, the light trail work we did do turned in an impressive response from the chassis, helped along by the multi-terrain system that provides deep snow, mud, sand and dirt modes. Dirt mode was all I needed for this work, but even in this scenario, you really get the sense that the Tundra is at-ease, willing to conquer most anything you throw its way. Back on the road, meanwhile, the Tundra also shines. Even with all that extra off-road suspension, body control over undulations and bumps and berms is very impressive. The Ram 1500 probably returns the best ride in this segment, but this latest Tundra is the closest I’ve come to the way that truck feels, and I’ve sampled them all. I think most impressive is how, even when unladen, the rear end is kept well in check with some very good rebound tuning to ensure you don’t get the telltale bob you get from an empty pickup bed. Couple that with the comfortable (and heated!) front seats and dual-zone

climate control – not to mention the generous space up front – and you find yourself in a very calm and relaxing environment. Power from the twin-turbo V6 is rated at 348 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque, both figures that are up on what’s made by an F-150 with the popular 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine option. If you opt for the hybrid powertrain, meanwhile, you’re up to 437 hp and a frankly startling 583 lb-ft. Even with the less powerful engine I had, however, forward progress is deep-chested and brisk – more so if you happen to have the powertrain in Sport mode, which is joined by Eco and Normal modes. The ten-speed automatic works well in concert with the motor and if you want to get a little more “involved,” simply bump that big T-shaped gear lever to the left and start rowing those gears yourself. It’s been a long time coming, this third-gen Tundra, and it’s a clear case of good things come to those who wait. The great ride, awesome capability, modern looks and powerful yet frugal V6 engine – not to mention the hybrid – have all combined to make an almost fully complete package. The spartan bed and bumpy cabin floor are definite demerits here, but this latest Tundra has emerged a tidy, taut and very functional affair.

Rich Heritage

2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

T

he Wagoneer name is not a new one, introduced back in 1963 and experiencing a successful three-decade run. Another thirty years later, Jeep has resurrected the badge, including the luxurious Grand Wagoneer variant that we took out for a week-long test run. Here’s what we found. “We are ready to start a new exciting adventure with a model that wrote some of the most iconic pages in the history of the American automobile,” says Jeep CEO Christian Meunier in a news release. “Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are born from the Jeep brand, but they have a flair of their own, building on a rich heritage of craftsmanship and refinement, while offering new levels of sophistication, comfort and legendary 4x4 capability.” Several features of the vehicle set it apart from the majority of its stable mates. First of all, the full-size three-row SUV just looks massive, measuring 5,453 millimetres long, 2,388 millimetres wide and 1,921 millimetres tall. A premium treatment is applied to the entire exterior starting at the grille, where paint-over-chrome laser-etched rings filling the signature seven slots resemble a knurled finish usually seen on fine watches. No detail is left out: top-of-theline Series III trims, like the one we drove, utilize raised with two-piece copperchino-accented lettering on the front doors and tailgate. A black roof, full LED lighting, fender flares and power retractable assist steps are standard. If the Heavy Duty Trailer Tow Package (+$1,295) is equipped, a pair of polished front tow hooks poke out on either of the lower air intake complementing the coat of Silver Zynith paint nicely. 20 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2022

On the sides, the character line running around the body pays homage to the original model. Our press loaner wore the optional 22x9-inch aluminum-painted six split-spoke alloy wheels boasting cool 3-D wheel branded wheel caps. The large footprint of the vehicle translates into a wealth of passenger and cargo space on the inside. Resembling a business-class lounge, the centrepiece is the Sculpted Satin American Walnut wood trim running along the dashboard. The stunning natural material is a yacht staple and is also used on the door panels and centre console, among other places. Even the start button is fancy with its knurl-patterned bezel and French-accent-stitched leather surround. The seats are swathed in soft Palermo quilted leather and are endlessly adjustable. My passenger noticed a tiny camera protruding out of the headliner — don’t worry, Stellantis is not spying on you, but it’s rather the Rear Seat Monitoring Camera delivering a bird’s-eye view of the interior. The novel hardware is great for keeping an eye on the little ones while making sure both driver’s eyes are facing ahead. Custom Electrification

There’s a Ford (electric-powered classic) in your Future

Story by John Gunnell, photos courtesy of Ford

A

fter World War II, Ford launched a series of ads based on the theme “There’s a Ford in your Future.” The ads showed Ford cars and trucks in a crystal ball held by a hand. Now, the message has changed to “There’s an electric Ford in your future.” And to expand the EV market a bit, classic vehicle lovers of the future may be re-powering older cars and trucks with electric crate motors. That’s the idea behind the Ford F-100 Eluminator, a concept truck that Ford whipped up which has a 1978 F-100 pickup body and an electric engine! The Eluminator started out as a very wellpreserved 1978 F-100 with a stock internal-combustion engine. That power plant was taken out and a 2021 Mustang Mach-E GT Performance Edition battery electric powertrain was installed in the truck. It uses twin, front and rear electric traction motors that, together, produce a combined 480 hp and 634 lb-ft of torque. Ford says it built the Eluminator to showcase the benefits of electric propulsion in motor vehicles. But there’s a second angle to its creation, since the clean-looking concept truck also shows that enthusiasts can order an electric crate motor from Ford dealers right now. The dealership then orders the electric motor through Ford Performance Parts. This “store-bought” Mach-E GT crate motor delivers 281 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The Eluminator bowed to the public at the 2021 SEMA Show. “Ford, today, previews the future of electrified custom vehicles with the revealing of the all-electric F-100 Eluminator concept,” read a press release. “It is a zero-emissions demo truck with an all-new Ford Performance Parts Eluminator electric crate motor.” Ford said customers can also buy motors online at https://performanceparts.ford.com/part/M-9000-MACHE.” 24 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2022

The SEMA concept truck is based on a heritage-edition F-100 pickup and also features all-wheel drive, with the two powerful electric motors sharing the honours. The electric traction motors drive the front and rear wheels separately. This arrangement is based directly on the Mustang Mach-E GT’s traction motor system. Ford’s global director of personalization, accessories and licensing was anxious to discuss the concept truck with companies interested in using or marketing the motors, as well as SEMA show attendees. He pointed out how Ford owners have been personalizing and customizing Fords since the company’s beginnings in 1903. He said that the new Eluminator motor was an example of how Ford plans to help customers go all-electric and embrace zerotailpipe emissions performance, even in collector vehicles. The all-electric F-100 Eluminator concept was designed and

created by Ford Performance in collaboration with an outside shop called MLe Racecars. It sits on a custom Roadster Shop chassis. The Avalanche Gray paint with Cerakote Copper accents was applied by Brand X Customs. Inside is a billet aluminum dash by JJR Fabrication and avocado-tanned leather trim by MDM Upholstery. It rides on Forgeline custom 19 x 10-in. billet aluminum 3-piece wheels wearing 275/45-19 Michelin® Latitude® Sport tires. Ford described the Eluminator e-crate motor as “the first of what will become a growing portfolio of performance parts and accessories for Ford electric vehicles.” The motor (Part No. M-9000-MACH-E) is already available at authorized Ford parts warehouse dealers or online. It sells for US$3,900 and is targeted at anyone looking for a transverse-oriented powertrain to electrify a range of vehicles from modern to vintage. Each Eluminator e-crate motor produces 281 hp and is street-legal in all 50 states. Over time, the Ford Performance group plans to develop a wider list of applications for the Eluminator powertrain, as well as more components. It will work with some of the leading performance manufacturers on electric battery systems, controllers and traction inverters to close the loop on full turnkey performance aftermarket electrification solutions. In addition to creating the Eluminator F-100 concept truck, Ford will be working on motorsports EVs. Jim Osborn, former pro Sports Car Club of America racer and founder of the Austin Hatcher Foundation, is preparing a custom Mustang Mach-E GT build to take to Bonneville Speed Weeks next summer. He hopes to make it the first Mustang Mach-E to top the 200-mph mark. Ford is also fielding the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, an electric-powered exhibition drag vehicle prepared by Ford Performance and MLe Racecars. “Electric performance is fun and, as the industry moves toward electric vehicle motorsports, the performance aftermarket will too,” said Mark Rushbrook, of Ford’s Performance group. “Just as Ford is committed to leading the electric revolution on the product side, Ford Performance is committed to winning on the motorsports front.” APRIL/MAY 2022 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 27

Plymouth’s prewar trucks Story and photos by John Gunnell

O

n a snowy Thanksgiving Day, a number of years ago, we received a phone call from a car enthusiast who was deer hunting in the woods when he came across the remains of an ancient Plymouth pickup. Although it was rusty and rotten, the truck caught his attention because he had never heard of a Plymouth pickup and probably thought he had found the only truck that Chrysler’s Plymouth division ever made. Actually, a lot of companies were looking at the light truck market in the 1930s, when Plymouth built its first commercial vehicles. The Great Depression was the reason. With auto sales taking a big dive when The 1938 PT57 Express had the Plymouth script stamped into the tailgate.

the economy tanked, carmakers were looking for any business they could drum up. Pontiac, Hudson-Terraplane, Oldsmobile, Studebaker, Buick, Willys and De Soto were among the firms that were jealous of the truck business that their competitors Chevy, Dodge, Ford and GMC had built up. Many historians cite 1935 as the first year for Plymouth trucks, but photos from the Chrysler Historical Collection prove that a Commercial Sedan was a 1930 Plymouth model. It was built on a beefed-up passenger car chassis and was more or less a Sedan Delivery truck with windows that retailed for $750. The same historical source also includes photos of a Pilot Model Delivery Truck on the Plymouth “Drop Frame.” Only about 80 of the Commercial Cars--which used L-head 4-cylinder engines--were made. According to Jim Benjaminson of the Plymouth Owner’s Club (www. plymouthowners.club) “This was most likely due to the fact that Chrysler’s non-Dodge outlets had the Fargo truck to sell in the United States at the time.” But after 1935, the Fargo became a badge-engineered Dodge marketed in Canada and other nations. “This again created the need for a non-Dodge commercial vehicle,” said Benjaminson. In 1935, that vehicle arrived in the form of a Plymouth truck. It was called the Series PJ Sedan Delivery and sold for $636. It was based on the Plymouth slantback sedan of that era with the back converted to a rear door that was hinged on the passenger side. The sedan interior was gutted, a bucket seat was fitted (a passenger bucket seat was extra) and the quarter windows were filled with metal panels that were removable. The spare tire was carried sidemount style in the right front fender. A 201-cid 62-hp L-head six-cylinder engine was provided along with a three-speed transmission. 1,142 were built. The Sedan Delivery or Commercial Sedan was continued in 1936 with

only minor changes, but apparently a price drop to $605 helped boost production up to 3,527 units.

With a slight restyling, the ‘38 Plymouth PT57 Express truck looked modernized.

For 1937, Plymouth offered four commercial vehicles starting with a Chassis and Cab which outside body builders could use as the basis for a purpose-built truck. It was priced at $495 and 158 were made. There was a new PT-57 pickup for $525 that looked quite handsome with its car-like front sheet metal. Plymouth made 10,709 of them. A wood-bodied Station Wagon was also in the commercial line with a $740 price tag and production run of 602. The Sedan Delivery was $655 and 3,256 were manufactured. All of these again utilized the stalwart Plymouth L-head six which was now at 70 hp. With a slight restyling, the 1938 Plymouth PT57 trucks looked modernized. The chassis and engine were virtually the same. The pickup was listed as the Express with a $585 price and a fairly huge production drop to 4,620 units. Plymouth also built 95 of the Chassis and Cab units priced at $560 and 1,601 Sedan Deliveries priced at $695. A new offering was a slide-in pickup box for the 1938 Plymouth business coupe. The 1939 Plymouth trucks were PT 81s. They had more of an Art Deco look. Other than cosmetics, there were only the smallest technical changes. The dispatch box on the pickup was slightly enlarged and the spare tire was now under the truck instead of in a front fender well. Plymouth built 140 Chassis and Cab units priced at $545, 6,191 pickups priced at $575 and just 13 Sedan Deliveries priced at $654. The company then released two commercial versions of its “Road King” sedan. The Panel Delivery listed for $715 and the Utility Sedan was $685. Production was 2,270 and 341, respectively. Plymouth trucks for 1940 were handsome. They had a “ship’s prow” nose that looked higher and more vertical. Side grilles extended out onto the fender “catwalks” and curved into the centre grille. All three grilles had horizontal openings. While the engine displacement didn’t change, it was now rated at 79 hp. Sedan Delivery models were based

on the Plymouth Road King and had two models. The Utility Sedan listed for $699 and 589 were built, while the Panel Delivery listed for $720 and 2,889 were made. The trucks were now PT105 models and there were only two left. The Chassis and Cab was $555 and 174 were made. The pickup sold for

Vernon Meyer owns one of the 4,620 Plymouth pickups built in 1938. $585 and 6,879 were produced. These are pretty commercial vehicles and probably the best-known Plymouth trucks. By 1941, Plymouth was ready to call it quits in the truck market—at least until the 1970s. The PT110 trucks were revised to look a little fancier with a Y-shaped chrome decoration below the nose. The engine gained a few more horsepower. Only about 7,000 trucks and commercial cars were made. With 6,073 units built, the PT125 pickup was the best seller. Fewer than 700 Commercial Cars of all types were built.

The Volo Museum in Volo, Ill., had this 1940 Plymouth pickup for sale at $23,000.

In 1974, Plymouth re-entered the truck market with the Trail Duster SUV. In 1975, the Voyager van came out. In 1979, the Plymouth Arrow mini pickup—built by Japan’s Mitsubishi Motors - arrived. And in 1985, the Plymouth Voyager minivan kept Plymouth truck history going and evolving. The final Plymouth trucks were the 2000 Voyagers. For this article, we are concentrating on the prewar Plymouth trucks. APRIL/MAY 2022 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 35

Spring Tune-Up

Remember the trailer brakes Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of the manufacturers

T

he RVing season is coming, and the excitement is building with the return of the in-person RV shows. This happy event signals the end of winter and also the promise of Covid restrictions being lifted. So, while we all immediately start planning our next road adventures, I’d like to spend a few minutes talking about that spring tune-up. In particular I want to point out one of the most often overlooked systems on your trailer – the brakes.

Most owners are aware that their trailer has brakes - AND - that’s about as far as many owners’ thoughts go when asked about them. So, ask yourself right now - when were they serviced last? Many will say never. How often should they be serviced? Most wouldn’t know. Because brakes are an out-of-sight/out-of-mind component owners tend to forget about. This is your reminder. Now, few if any owners will service their own brakes, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to have a basic knowledge of the system on your unit. With this knowledge comes the awareness that will remind you to regularly get those brakes serviced. Here are the basics everyone should know – and just a bit more. The majority of trailer brakes are of the older style “drum” variety. The key difference between these and those found on most cars/trucks is that the actuator (the arm that presses the brake pads against the inside of the drum) is electrically activated, rather than hydraulically. It’s this electric pulse that comes from the trailer brake controller found in the tow vehicle. This system does the obvious – syncs up the trailer and truck brakes, because you want those to work together. But it does so much more. In-

36 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2022

cab readouts will show owners how much braking force is being applied to the trailer so they can change it to account for a loaded or empty condition. Even weather can play into how much brake force the trailer should exert. Brake pads on trailers often don’t need replacement for many years (depending on usage) but because of the amount of time most trailers sit idle, corrosion, binding, seizing and wire deterioration are the true enemies of your brakes. At the very least, trailer brakes should be inspected annually. Their key need is cleaning and lubrication – jobs many owners can easily do. Apart from the obvious need to stop the trailer, these brakes also play a much larger role in the overall safe operation of a travelling truck and trailer combination. For instance, the use of Tow/Haul mode found in many of today’s trucks. Tow/Haul is fully integrated with a truck’s computer, which modifies the transmission’s shift mapping on the fly. With Tow/Haul engaged, the computer “knows” that the truck

is towing, how much weight it’s pulling and takes the driver’s accelerator inputs into consideration as it adjusts the shift points to pull more engine power for starts, hills and merging. But this is not its only function – when slowing, the transmission downshifts are made at higher rpms, promoting engine braking. This reduces wear on the trailer brakes and offers better downhill control. Any trucker will tell you it’s all about controlling the weight, and that’s what the computer is programmed to do; however, many drivers still feel the need to make the decisions so most trucks will allow manual downshifting. Either way, this too is APRIL/MAY 2022 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 37

with the trailer brakes) can bring a swaying trailer back under control automatically. The key element to this system is the controller which provides a two-way flow of information to the truck’s computer that activates the system. When the computer senses trailer sway, it brakes the truck (and the electric trailer brakes) as needed (sometimes only one side)

a safe driving habit that has everything to do with saving trailer brakes. Why bother, you may ask? Research has shown that using the transmission’s gearing to hold the load on grades can reduce brake rotor temperatures by 100 C during a braking event. Cooler brakes – both sets (truck and trailer) – means sharper stopping when the need really arises, not to mention lowering maintenance costs.

or cuts engine power and downshifts to bring the trailer under control. And, that’s the best reason to make sure your trailer’s brakes are serviced regularly.

So where else do trailer brakes impact driving safety? One of the biggest advances in trailer towing safety in the last decade is trailer sway control. As the name implies, the truck (working

So, as spring comes on, consider your first seasonal maintenance and make sure the trailer brakes are on the list for inspection at your dealer.

RV-ING: 2022 PALOMINO REAL-LITE MINI 186

Escape Vehicle Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Palomino

T

he Real Lite Mini from Palomino is what I call a couple’s trailer – that’s just my label. However, it can also be viewed as an escape vehicle for folks new to RVing who want to get into something smaller that they can tow with the vehicle they already own. Frankly, that definition springs from all the new models that have come to dealer lots this past two years in response to Covid and the jump in sales it has caused. At 21-feet long and just around 4,000 lb, it fits that bill to a T. This single slide-out trailer also employs a space-saving trick – its 60x80-in. bed folds when not in use to reveal a cushioned love-seat. A nice-sized dinette is housed in the slide-out, one which also folds down for another sleep space (30x70-in.). This layout (including a large bathroom) will scratch that get-out-of-town itch. Palomino has a long history, one built on responding to customer needs with units they want to buy. It started in 1968, when Mr. Vern Landey, a tent trailer distributor, felt he could design and produce better quality units for his customers. He designed units which were lightweight and offered convenient floor plans. The first Palomino popup tent trailers were built in a small building in Savage, Minnesota. The company expanded in the following years - in part because of its attention to RVing trends. 40 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE APRIL/MAY 2022

Then, in 1998, it expanded to a new 75,000 sq. ft. production facility. This allowed for Palomino to begin production of their new ultra-lightweight line of travel trailers. In 2002, they were purchased by Forest River, Inc. This allowed for rapid growth and the introduction of two new towable lines of travel trailers and fifth wheels, Puma by Palomino and Sabre by Palomino. Two new 100,000 square foot facilities were built in Goshen, Indiana to house the production lines for these two new products. The stand-out feature on the Mini is the large front automotive style window; it lights up the interior, which along with the slide-out, just makes the unit feel larger overall. Among the many standard features found in the Real-Lite Mini are

maple hand-glazed cabinets, LED interior lighting, ball bearing drawer guides, a porcelain toilet, power awning with LED light and 13.5K BTU air conditioner. This unit from Palomino is on the higher end of the price scale for a unit of this size, so it’s important to see what you are getting standard. I’ve included the list here: Standard features on the Real-Lite Mini. • Aluminum Wheels • Dexter torsion axle • Hi-Gloss White Exterior • Four stabilizer jacks • Spare Tire • 1-20 lb. LP tank • AM/FM Bluetooth Stereo • Ball bearing drawer guides • Two-burner cook top • Microwave • Maxx Air vent • Carbon Monoxide detector • Solar Prep • LED interior lighting • Laminated roof • Front Cap with windshield and Line X Protectant • 10 cubic-foot 12-Volt refrigerator • Azdel construction • Hot Water – 6 gal. One of the newest and hottest trends in RVing is wilderness camping. While this has always been an interest to a minority of campers, it seems to be growing. In response to this trend, companies like Palomino are offering optional upgrades to its units that will make travel into remote locations much more possible. The Off-road package can be added right at the factory to any of the four Mini models. With the added height and off-road tires, you’ll get the trailer in to the rougher country.

Created by Greg Stelse as a kind of Disneyland for hot rod lovers and vintage drag racers, the shop turns out everything from ‘50s-style custom “lead sleds” to straight-axle quarter mile racing cars. The rigs that Norm cuts on and welds together are all special rides, which may explain why his one-of-a-kind Jeep is special, too. Norm doesn’t know the whole story behind the Jeep’s build. It was originally owned by a muscle-car collector who likes

only the rarest and best of the breed. He has everything from big-block Chevys to “Billboard” Barracudas. It’s not clear whether he bought the Jeep “as is” (with many upgrades and aftermarket goodies) or if it was sent somewhere to be transformed from “just a Jeep Wrangler” into an extreme machine. Somewhere along the line, the owner got caught up in a personal situation and decided to let the Jeep go. It was sold or traded-in to Neuville Motors ,a big multi-make car dealer in Waupaca, and Norm—who hails from nearby New London-- bought it there. After all, he needed something special to drive to work, if he was going to be working on APRIL/MAY 2022 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 45

While snapping photos of the Jeep, we noticed an XRC logo on the frontbumper-mounted winch, as well as another on each of the rear bumper step plates. There was also a plate on the front end that advertised the Website VPR4x4. com. Off-Road Centric 2022 Subaru Forester First Drive

Story and photos by Dan Heyman

L

ike an old friend come home for the first time in a while where things may seem different at first, but soon you’re comfortable in your old routines, the vaunted Subaru Forester – vaunted and high selling, it should be said – gets refreshed for 2022, but doesn’t lose all that’s made it so great for so many years: an all-wheel-drive system that provides supreme confidence, great interior space, patented EyeSight safety tech and just a general air of practicality and sensibility.

ometry (its 9.0-inches of ride height is higher than other Foresters) and more aggressive cladding ‘round the wheel wells and rocker panels. They’ve also added some aluminum skid plates to protect the radiator, oil pan and differentials. It is very aggressive, all that cladding, but considering the nature of this particular Forester, it makes sense. Plus, it looks really unique – not always a top trait when it comes to Foresters or other Subarus – and tougher than it’s ever looked before, especially when

It has been given a comprehensive onceover for 2022, however. The headlights are different, the foglights are now small roundels, and there’s a new grille and front bumpers, too. New 18-inch wheels for the Premiere, new two-tone black and leather interior upholstery to replace the all-brown treatment from previous, and new Cascade Green Silica exterior paint cap off the changes for most Forester trims. The big news, though, is the addition of an all-new, more off-road-centric Wilderness version. Which is a good move, as the competition continues to add more off-roadspecific trims such as the Toyota RAV4 Trail and Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Far more than just a few body modifications and maybe some colours, the Wilderness gets Yokohama Geolandar off-road tires (that also get a winter rating), special wheels, different suspension tuning and geAPRIL/MAY 2022 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 55

wheel, shift lever, X-Mode dial and matching stitching on the dash and seats. It also gets rubberized floor mats as standard, as well as an 8-inch touch screen display as opposed to the 6.5-incher found on the two base trims. They’ve also added gesture controls for the climate system; hold an open hand towards it and the temperature goes up a couple of degrees; a closed fist drops it a couple of degrees so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road. Speaking of eyes on the road: the Forester sees the first application of Subaru’s new EyeSight 4 system, which now has a wider view out, provides automatic emergency steering, electric brake boost and enhanced lane-centring assist, lane departure assist, pre-colli-

finished in the Geyser Blue paint job with gold trim (all Wilderness models get the latter) seen here; it looks aftermarket, and that’s okay. Almost makes up for that Forester STI we never got all those years ago… The Wilderness, of course, is the polar opposite of that tarmac shredder; this latest Forester is more of a trail shredder. Or, in the case of our drive through the wintery wilds of southern Quebec, a snow shredder. In short, it was the perfect environment in which to put the Wilderness to the test. First, though, one must accommodate oneself inside. Which, in the Forester, is relatively easy thanks to great headroom both front and back, wide opening doors (that open almost 90 degrees in back) that makes entrance and egress much easier – not to mention loading your toddler into their child’s seat – wide view out (and wide trunk opening - one of the widest in this business) and high seating position. It’s a good vantage point to take in the interior details the Wilderness adds, which revolve mainly around gold accents on the steering

sion braking and adaptive cruise control. The dual cameras are now sealed against the windshield so not only does it integrate better with the surroundings in the stylistic sense (the old EyeSight assembly was a pretty hideous thing), it stays cleaner as well. There’s also a secondary screen atop the dash that provides off-road info (angle of descent, axle articulation, etc.) and a forward-facing camera so you aren’t left blind as you climb steeper hills. It doesn’t

get a washer, though, which is a shame as it can get dirty, though not quite as seriously as you might think. The Premier also gets the feature, as well as a newly-tuned dual-function X-Mode AWD system which provides two separate AWD modes: deep snow/mud, and snow/dirt. Essentially, the tweaking done here is about the seamlessness of its integration; used to be, the system would deactivate once you hit 40 km/h, and that was it. Now, it merely goes into standby mode and reverts to X-mode – which essentially plays with the powertrain and brakes to help you traverse steep, rough terrain – once you drop back below 35. What’s a little confusing, however, is that the camera only functions up to 20 km/h, so it’s not quite in lockstep but makes sense because you probably should be looking at the road ahead as opposed to a little screen when driving upwards of 30, 40 or 50 km/h. Feeling X-Mode work is quite something. Activate it, and in addition to providing up to 50/50 front/rear power distribution (stock settings have it at 60:40 front:rear), it works as an off-road cruise control system that allows the driver to focus on steering while it does the powertrain and brake work itself. All that not withstanding, however, is just how incredibly cooperative and accomplished this AWD system is. Steep ascents you swear are going to jam you up are tackled with hardly any drama. Yes, some of the deeper stuff we tackled led to a little tail wagging – this is a short wheelbase, after all, one of the shortest in the segment – but just when you think forward progress is thwarted, power gets shuffled about, the tires bite and you’re on your way. We traversed the toughest off-road portions with the Wilderness, but you get the sense that the other Foresters would be able to accomplish a similar feat. Or at least the ones that get the dual-mode X-Mode system – Sport, Wilderness, Limited and Premier – would be able to accomplish the feat. Indeed, the lighter off-roading we did attempt with both the Premier and Wilderness model was accomplished sans drama with each. It’s incredible in this stuff, the Forester. It really is. Back on more cultured roads, you still get that sense that there’s very little that’s going to keep you back. It’s just that in these conditions, it’s almost too safe. Power is rated at 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque; those are fine figures, but they do represent the lower end of the compact crossover spectrum in which the Forester competes. It feels just a little underpowered – more so

in Wilderness spec, as there’s more weight to haul around – and a naturally-aspirated 2.5-litre four-cylinder “boxer” engine and CVT transmission is your only choice. There is a turbo-four in the North American Subaru world, and it’s found under the hood of the larger Outback Wilderness. Adding that engine to the Forester, however, could make the choice between the two a little tougher and there’s a chance one would further cannibalize the other’s sales. Plus, the 2.5L ensures the Forester does keep a place in the upper echelons when it comes to fuel economy, but gets the added bonus of a full-time AWD system, not a passive “slip and grip” type. Still, other markets get a hybrid Forester; if fuel economy savings are important, you’d think that would be a good fit here. Like the X-Mode system, the Forester also gets on-road drive modes – Sport and Intelligent – that modify the powertrain. While you will feel it hold on to the CVT’s “virtual” ratios a little longer, it isn’t a drastic change, though I did keep it in Sport for most of my drive on the less hazardous roads. Like its attitude off-road, the Forester is something of a charmer on-road as well. Dips, cracks, pavement heaves, the potholes Quebec is so well known for (and seems kind of proud of, to be honest) – it takes a whole heck of a lot to upset the Forester. In fact, short of a massive dip through a rut recently carved by flowing rainwater, I never got high-centred, never felt my teeth rattle; heck, I never even felt the bump stops. I began by swerving around potholes, but eventually just went “forget it” and plowed through. Heck, if it could talk, that’s probably what the Forester would ask me to do. I would imagine that it would also be saying “don’t worry, I got this” no matter the situation. The Forester continues to be that comforting arm on your shoulder you like to have on the forestry roads in B.C., through the long shadows, snow and slush of a Quebec winter and grinding your way through town on the way to hockey practice or work. Only now, it’s as well-rounded as it’s ever been, but with a proper dash of Wilderness cool to go with it. APRIL/MAY 2022 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 57
