New Ford Expedition Makes Towing and Backing up Trailers Easy Given that this is mainly a truck magazine, it isn’t often you will see an SUV grace our pages. However, exceptions can always be made and when details of the new 2018 Ford Expedition began to emerge, we decided it was definitely something that our readers would be interested in. The Expedition has a brand-new look both inside and out, and features the newer, more powerful 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine with the 10-speed automatic transmission, but what really intrigues us about the SUV is its towing capability. The new Expedition will feature class-exclusive Pro Trailer Backup Assist which allows users to steer the trailer with a control knob while the Expedition steers its wheels and limits vehicle speed. In addition to that, the Expedition will boast best-in-class towing capability with 9,300 lbs. (4,219 kg) which pushes it to be the most capable Expedition ever made.

We told you a few issues back about the new Mercedes-Benz mid-size pickup that will launch at some point this year in other markets outside of North America. We would like to be able to tell you that Mercedes has changed its mind and will be offering the truck to those of us here in North America, but that still seems unlikely at least for the near future. What we can tell you, however, is that Mercedes has recently officially unveiled the truck (named the X-Class) at a special event in Cape Town, South Africa. The truck shares its platform with the new Nissan Navara mid-size truck currently being offered in other markets, but is likely to come here using the Frontier nameplate. Not much has changed since we showed you the concept, as it still looks fairly similar to the Navara with some Mercedes styling on the front and back, but even more details have now emerged. Three trim levels will be offered including (in order) Pure, Progressive and Power, and the interior of the truck will boast quite a few Mercedes styling cues giving it a truly luxurious feel. Powering the truck will be four engine options including two 2.3L inline-four diesel engines, an inline-four gasser, and a top-of-the-line V6 diesel that will push out 258 horsepower. The X-Class will hit European, South African, Australian, Argentinian, and Brazilian markets and we can only hope that somehow, they will eventually be offered here.

Chevrolet and Nissan Pickups Rank High in 2017 J.D. Power Quality Study The Chevrolet Silverado and Nissan Frontier were the winners of the recent 2017 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study which measures owner satisfaction with the quality of new vehicles within the first 90 days of ownership. J.D. Power places the pickups into three segments including mid-size, large light-duty (half-ton) and large heavy-duty (3/4- and 1-ton). The often forgotten-about Nissan Frontier took home the top prize in the mid-size category, with the Chevrolet Colorado placing second and the Honda Ridgeline rounding out the top three. In the Large Light-Duty segment, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 was named the winner followed by the Ram 1500 and Toyota Tundra respectively. Chevrolet continued its impressive showing in the Large Heavy-Duty segment with the Silverado 2500/3500 being named winner followed closely by the Ford Super Duty, with the Ram 2500/3500 rounding out the podium. Cummins Reportedly to Move Toward Hybrids and Electrics The Cummins brand is one of the most iconic names when it comes to diesel powertrains, but given the direction that the automotive market has gone in the last few years, it should come as no surprise that the company has announced it will be moving towards producing electrified powertrains including both hybrids and full EVs. Autoblog reported that in a recent conference call with a Cummins representative, they stated they plan on releasing a fully electric powertrain by the end of 2019, with a range-extended electric powertrain coming the following year. The rep also suggested that the early applications for these powertrains would be in buses and delivery vehicles, with other applications such as pickup trucks coming later. This may come as somewhat of a surprise to many, but given the way the market has been trending in recent times, with the growing availability of electric components and tougher emissions regulations, it makes complete sense for the company to slowly move towards that direction. However, the same Autoblog report did say that after talking to a chief technical officer for Cummins, it is expected that diesel will continue to play a significant role for the company moving forward, and pure diesel Ram and Nissan pickups should be available for the foreseeable future.

ROAD TEST: TOYOTA TRD PICKUPS

Two Capable Trucks

Toyota’s TRD Pro Off-Road Packages Offer Rugged Good Looks Story and photos by Russell Purcell

I

t’s a well known fact that pickup trucks sell well in Canada, so it should come as no surprise that the various manufacturers strive to equip these once-utilitarian vehicles with a wide variety of equipment and upgrades to further broaden their appeal. The Toyota Motor Company, in particular, has a long history of selling trucks in our market, so the members of both the product planning and marketing teams have accumulated a tremendous wealth of knowledge of what truck buyers are seeking from the brand when it comes to the production of the trucks themselves, as well as accessories and equipment.

In an effort to appeal to the off-road enthusiast, Toyota has called upon its in-house tuning arm - Toyota Racing Development (TRD) - to help make its popular Tacoma and Tundra four-wheel-drive pickups even more capable when the going gets rough and the pavement comes to an end. The folks at TRD know what they are doing, as their firm has been responsible for improving the performance of Toyota’s automobiles and supporting the company’s various racing interests since 1979. A variety of TRD-engineered parts are available through Toyota dealers including performance suspension components, superchargers, and wheels. By creating special TRD and TRD Pro editions of its truck offerings, Toyota is able to offer its customers turn-key, fullywarranted vehicles with enhanced performance capabilities at a package price. In short, buying a TRD model is a no muss, no fuss proposition. Toyota is one car company that has made safety a top priority, so TRD Pro offerings are equipped with no fewer than eight airbags, a Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA) as well as rear parking assist sonar. The full Star Safety System suite of driver aides is also on board - which includes ABS brakes, Brake Assist, Smart Stop Technology, Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control, and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution. Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro The Tacoma TRD Pro is only available in a five-passenger Double Cab Short Bed (5-foot) configuration, but there are

complete with integrated navigation will help keep you entertained and help track your route. Under the hood resides a 3.5-litre V6 engine that produces 278 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, but a six-speed automatic is available as an option. I found power to be more than sufficient for a truck of this size, and acceleration was brisk and controlled whether from a standstill or when the engine was tasked with delivering a surge for passing. The Tacoma TRD Pro features Toyota’s 4WDemand part-time four-wheel drive system with an electronically controlled transfer case and an automatic rear limited-slip differential for more grip on low-traction surfaces. It also benefits from an upgraded TRD-tuned

three colour choices - Cement, Barcelona Red Metallic, and Super White. These special edition trucks further stand out, as they come equipped with a heritage-inspired TOYOTA front grille with colourkeyed surround, blacked out hood scoop and graphic, colour-keyed power outside mirrors with turn signal indicators, colour-keyed door handles, black over fenders, and a colour-keyed rear bumper. Exterior modifications include 16-inch TRD black alloy wheels wrapped with Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain Kevlar-reinforced tires, a special 1/4-inch aluminum front skid plate, and special TRD Pro badges. Lighting is also unique, as the TRD Pro benefits from projector-beam headlights with black bezels, LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), and taillights with black bezels. Extra-robust LED fog lights sourced from off-road lighting specialist Rigid Industries are also part of the TRD Pro upgrade. On the inside, Toyota has dressed up the truck with a host of standard features which include black TRD Pro leather-trimmed heated front seats (with a bold TRD Pro logo stitched into the head restraint), a TRD shift knob, TRD floor mats, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel outfitted with accessory controls. A premium audio system

suspension which includes Fox 2.5 internal bypass shocks, 1.0-inch front lift springs, and progressive-rate off-road rear leaf springs. Automatic models also benefit from the addition of Crawl Control. During an afternoon of off-road exploration I found the TRD-equipped Tacoma to be up to any and all tasks I asked it to tackle.

SR5 TRD Pro has been geared up to compete with similar offerings like the Ram Rebel, Ford F150 FX4 and the Nissan Titan Pro 4X. The Tundra’s overall design is currently mid-cycle, as it was last thoroughly revised in 2014. The new styling was more bold and aggressive, and now with the TRD Pro treatment, it gets kicked up a further notch. Cloaked in Cement Gray Metallic paint, the Tundra TRD Pro looks all business, especially rolling on black wheels and adorned with a host of black trim pieces to help sell the look.

The Tacoma’s gauge cluster features a 4.2-inch colour Multi-Information Display (MID) with an integrated inclinometer and tilt gauge to help keep the driver informed of vehicle position during potential treacherous manoeuvres. This was greatly appreciated during steep descents and when traversing across a hillside or through a ditch. The off-the-showroom-floor Tacoma TRD Pro provides a 32.1 degree approach angle, and 23.5 degree departure angle.

Like its Tacoma stable mate, the addition of the TRD Pro off-road package equips the Tundra with an arsenal of equipment that will allow it to tackle the harsh conditions and hazards that come with venturing off road. The truck gains underbody skid plates, a heavyduty suspension [double-wishbone independent (front); solid axle leaf spring (rear)], more robust Bilstein shocks that offer a slight lift to ride height, more aggressive all-terrain tires, and a more raucous sounding dual exhaust system with special tips. The truck also sports badges, wheel centres and bed-side stamping to demark the truck as a special piece.

The truck features a power rear sliding window, and as is the case with all current Tacoma models, a GoPro mount is located on the left-side of the windshield to facilitate video documentation of your adventures. A 400 Watt (120V) power outlet is embedded in the wall of the cargo bed to help keep your gadgets charged, and an optional QI Wireless charging pad can be ordered for the cabin. Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Large pick-up trucks represent sales gold for Canadian auto dealers, especially if you are selling trucks made by the domestic stalwarts General Motors, Ford, and Ram. However, half-ton offerings from both Nissan and Toyota (interestingly both domestically produced) have been gaining traction with Canadian consumers. The Toyota Tundra

The truck can be ordered with the DoubleCab or the larger CrewMax cab, the latter of which is a better choice if you plan to haul five adults. Don’t get me wrong, as the DoubleCab variant is quite spacious, but it looks a little odd proportionally due to the shape of the rear side windows. The DoubleCab does allow for the truck to be fitted with the longer cargo bed (up to 6.5 feet), but long-legged adults may find the rear passenger area a little cramped. Like its Tacoma stable mate, the Tundra TRD Pro is available cloaked in Cement, Barcelona Red Metallic, or Super White paint. The interior is adorned with TRD badges, a TRD shift knob, and embroidery in strategic locations, and features an attractive black leather seating treatment complete with red stitching that is carried into the door panels. You really need to scramble to get into the Tundra TRD Pro as the truck does not include steps or rock rails. Luckily, the steering wheel and lots of grab handles are within reach to lend an assist. Shorter individuals may wish to have longer arms as some interior controls and switchgear will seem very far away once you are perched in the power operated driver’s seat. Standard niceties include a premium 7-inch Display Audio system with integrated XM Satellite Radio, built-in navigation system, clearance and backup sensors, heated front seats, an anti-theft system, and a power sliding rear window. Our test truck derived its power from the proven 5.7-litre iForce V8 engine which produces 381 horsepower and a prodigious 401 lb-ft of torque. This potent powerplant is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with Sequential Shift Mode. To some, this may sound underpowered and under geared, but during my week long test period, I never found myself wanting of more power. Mind you, I was not towing, and for the most part the truck was running with a very light load. 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017

The Tundra TRD Pro also features Toyota’s One-Touch part-time four-wheel drive system with an electronically-controlled transfer case and an automatic rear limited-slip differential for more grip on low-traction surfaces. A day spent playing off-road revealed how balanced and capable the TRD Pro package makes the Tundra, and the truck has a 26-degree approach angle, and 17 degree departure angle. Steering feel is light and communicative, even off-road, as the hydraulic power-assist rack-and-pinion allows the driver to navigate this big rig without placing too much burden on his or her arms. Conclusion Both Tacoma and Tundra TRD Pro models have been designed, and outfitted, to offer more aggressive looks as well as Bajaproven off-road capabilities. However, each platform will appeal to very different buyers largely due to their size difference.

FIRST DRIVE: 2018 CHEVROLET SILVERADO HD

Heavy-Duty

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of Chevrolet

C

hevy recently partnered with John Deere at its world headquarters to show off its newest version of the Silverado HD pickup. The reason? A work-related backdrop is vital to understanding the needs of the HD truck owner and frankly, what looks better than some spanking new construction equipment towed by shiny 2018 Chevys? So, while this setup created the right visual, the actual towing of up to 20,000 pounds highlighted not just power, but a new trend in safety that has the OEMs tying existing on-board technologies together electronically.

These are known as Driver Assist Features. This is a new phrase that is becoming more common when describing the innovative electronic features found in today’s pickup trucks. I bring this up first when looking at the 2018 Chevy Silverado HD because the traditional newsworthy trifocal of towing, payload and power are fast becoming secondary to this new headline – Driver Assist Features. I, for one, am just fine with that. Frankly, with the exception of a new hood scoop design, the tin on the 2018 has not changed, and yet the truck has changed so much for the better. Today’s pickups, particularly the HD versions, have so much capacity and power that drivers need help in managing these loads. GM recognized that first in 2015 when it incorporated a cruise control system that stopped over-speeding on long downhill grades. At the time, I wrote “On the new 2015, the cruise control computer is also integrated with the exhaust brake, transmission shifter and trailer sway control. What’s that all mean? Net result – down a 7-percent grade, the truck did not pick up speed, the brakes did not come on, and it never upshifted; all I did was steer. So, don’t all HDs do this? Straight up, no. GM is the first to pull all these systems together and have the computer take care of it all. And, this is what inspires confidence – the speedometer didn’t budge off 90 km/h even with all that weight pushing the truck downhill.” For 2018, the trend towards more electronic helpers continues, as does the quest for HD weight supremacy – after all, that is still the name of this game. Looking at the growth of these numbers, just in the GM family, it backs up what I’m saying – drivers need help managing these loads. In

and Sierra HD) this setup has a trap for snow, sleet and rain, allowing cool dry air to get to the engine without clogging up the intake.

2011, Chevy’s max HD numbers were - payload 6,335 lb (3,009 kg); conventional towing 17, 000 lb (7,711 kg) and for fifth-wheel towing 21,700 lb (9,843 kg) (up from 16,500 lb on the 2010). The next benchmark was 2015. Weight capabilities increased to a max payload of 7,374 lb (3,345 kg). Conventional towing climbed to 19,600 (8,890kg). Fifth-wheel and gooseneck towing rose to 23,200 lb (10,523kg).

A new two-piece oil pan makes the Duramax quieter and also houses an integrated oil cooler with 50 percent greater capacity than found on the current engine. Of particular interest to Canadians will be the new Duramax cold-weather performance. With microprocessor-controlled glow plugs, the engine requires less than three seconds to preheat in temps as low as -29C. These new ceramic glow plugs adjust current to each plug based on outside temperature. This new engine continues to be coupled to the Alison 1000 six-speed automatic transmission which has a stellar reputation. This mechanical update to this Duramax diesel engine now officially starts it building sales into its second generation. The original Duramax sold over 2 million copies since its 2001 introduction.

For 2018, the max numbers are once again hiked. Now the max payload is 8,070 lb (3,661 kg), while conventional towing has risen to 20,000 lb (9,072 kg) and on the fifth wheel, again, up to 23,300 lb (10,569 kg). So, for 2018, this last set of numbers demands a truck that can handle them – power-wise and more importantly, safety-wise. The new 6.6-litre turbo-diesel V8 has been redesigned with a new cylinder block and heads. Oil and coolant flow capacity has been increased and the turbocharging system is now electronically controlled. Horsepower has increased to 445 and torque now reaches 910 lb-ft. Ninety percent of both numbers are achieved at just 1,550 rpm. A new patent-pending feature is a redesigned air intake system. Using an integrated hood scoop (on 2018 Silverado

So that covers power, but moving loads safely requires all the truck’s systems to work together “smartly.” GM’s HD trucks get a number of system upgrades this year to build on the trend it started in 2015. A new Digital Steering Assist improves road handling. A new tire pressure monitor system now includes a tire fill alert. All full Driver Alert Packages include Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Safety Alert Seat and Front and Rear Park Assist. GM’s longtime StabiliTrak stability control system has been updated to include rollover mitigation technology, a tie-in to the trailer sway control and hill start assist. Visual help is found in the Chevrolet MyLink with an 8-inch-diagonal touchscreen. Of particular interest is the camera system that broadcasts on this centre-mounted touchscreen (now standard on all models with cargo box). It shows reversing images that make hooking up easy – whether it’s to the bumper hitch or the in bed

with fifth-wheel. An around-the-truck view assists in parking manoeuvres. While driving, the signals now activate cameras in the mirrors showing images down the side of the truck, highlighting the blindspot. I also noted that you can see right down the side of any towed trailer as well. Other improvements include an available Gooseneck/Fifth-Wheel Trailering Prep Package which will include a spray-in bedliner. Electronic upgrades include wireless phone charging and remote locking tailgate. These are the types of Driver Assist Systems that I see coming into the mainstream. These will help prevent collisions and, in general, make the operator’s job that much easier, and that is the future. The OEMs have built a generation of highly competent HD trucks – load wise – and now they have to help make them easier to drive and safer in general. From what I saw in Illinois, GM is well on its way to this goal.

FEATURE: ATHS SHOW

Long-hooded 1951 Duplex Howe conventional from Cambridge, Ontario.

Historical Truck Convention Story and photos by John Gunnell

T

he American Truck Historical Society’s (www.aths.org) annual national convention turned Des Moines, Iowa into truck country from May 25-27. The convention includes a giant truck show that drew a record 1,269 entrants this year. Someone remarked that the 435-acre Iowa State Fairgrounds, where the show was held, was a mile long on each of its four sides. That weekend, about 75 percent of that real estate was covered by trucks of every type. Commercial vehicles came from everywhere. Cards on the vehicles we photographed listed the truck owners’ home cities, which stretched from New York to California. We saw at least two big rigs from Canada, one of which was a special 25th Anniversary Kenworth

This 1948 Jeep truck is a survivor. with red maple leaf graphics. Canadian Kenworth produced these special edition trucks in 1979-’80 to mark the 25th anniversary of Kenworth in Canada. There were 25 cabover K 100 VIT and 25 W 900 VIT conventionals with the special paint combo, badges and interiors. As VITs, they were all large sleeper trucks, that were rare in Canada in the late ‘70s.

The other Canadian semi was a long-hooded 1951 Duplex Howe conventional operated by B & N Specialized Transportation Incorporated out of Kitchener, Ontario. This truck belongs to Brian Vivian of Cambridge, Ontario. While big trucks dominated the rows and rows of rigs, there were some very neat light-duty trucks around, including many interesting four-wheel-drive vehicles.

Power Wagon values are skyrocketing. This is a ’68 model.

Moving ahead 19 years, Ken Voight brought his original looking 1949 Willys 4WD pickup to Des Moines from Armour, S.D. According to the badge on the rear edge of the hood, it’s technically a “Jeep Truck.” Interestingly enough, there were not a lot of Jeeps of any kind at the show. The other one we saw was a 1960 FC170 forward-control model owned by Bryan Pigg of Rogersville, Md. Dodge Power Wagons were another type of 4x4 that seemed hard to find in Des Moines. The earliest example we saw was a 1954 fire truck brought by Greg Risk of Toledo, Ohio. On the door, it said “Bedford Twnsp Fire Dept. No 1.” While it was totally unrestored, Larry McFee’s 1957 Chevrolet 3100 pickup with a NAPCO four-wheel-drive conversion looked like new. It was displayed in the indoor truck show. This truck is based in Maysville, Mo.

The oldest 4x4 was a 1918 FWD Model 8 cab-over-engine with a beer barrel-full wood body that belongs to Tim Hoover of Saltsburg, Pa. A sign on the side identified it as “Hoover’s Hooch Hauler.” FWD, of Clintonville, Wis., claims to have invented the first four-wheel drive vehicle (a car called the “Battleship” that still exists) in 1908. The Four Wheel Drive Auto Co. was formed a year later. While FWD advertises that it was the birthplace of four-wheel drive, the Coleman Truck Co. of Littleton, Colo,. advertised its products as “the first practical four-wheel-drive trucks.” There was also a Coleman at Des Moines. This 1929 model belongs to Larry and Melanie Maasdam, of Clarion, Iowa.

IH Scouts were probably the most popular small four-wheel drives at the ATHS Convention. There were three early editions: Keith Silbernick’s 1963 Scout 80 out of Little Falls, Minn., Mike Miller’s 1964 edition from Grand Junction, Colo., and a white soft top version. Phillip Davis, of Pennsylvania, also brought a 1973 Scout SSII with all of the bells and whistles and bright orange paint. In general, the show featured quite a few IHC/International models including a two-tone Travel All that was once owned by a filmmaker and a very clean 1967 D-2 that Mike Shannon brought to Iowa from Manhattan, Kan. There were also IH farm trucks, service vehicles, fire trucks and tractor trailers. We know that over the years, there has never been a big IH club, so maybe all the IH owners are gravitating towards joining the ATHS.

Firefighting was the main job of this 1954 Dodge Power Wagon. It isn’t too often that you see a nicely restored 1977 Ford F250, but that’s exactly what John and Judy Frauenkron brought to the truck show from Winona, Minn. It was a pretty unit with its shiny brown paint, tan roof and sun visor and ‘70s-style pickup bed cap also finished in tan. As far as interesting trucks without four-wheel drive go, a couple were Mike and Dee McQueen’s 1937 Diamond T restored with a Corvette engine. It also had a 700R4 automatic transmission, a customized interior and fender skirts. Mike Heitkamp’s 1938 Hudson Terraplane was another pickup with art deco styling and rear fender skirts. As far as survivor vehicles—which are hot these days—Henry J. Fowler, Jr., of Mechanicsville, Md., hauled his Cantrell-bodied 1947 Dodge WC Series woodie wagon out to the Midwest.

Coleman was the Colorado-based rival of FWD.

A nicely restored 1977 Ford F250. promoted antique truck shows and big rig shows. There was also a small outdoor flea market area with signs, petroliana and truck parts. The ATHS had a number of booths set up for show truck registration, sales of old truck photos and new memberships. Several things about the show stood out. First of all, virtually no two trucks in the show were alike. Secondly, there were a lot of ATHS members who are focused only on one type of truck. Third, ATHS

The show included a large indoor vendor area complete with airconditioned comfort to escape the heat. Exhibitors were selling toy trucks and custom-made reproduction radiators. Other booths NAPCO conversion turned this ’57 Chevy Step-Side into a 4 x 4 truck.

Fourth, from the graphics and lettering on the trucks, it was clear they came to Des Moines from all over the country. Other convention related activities included a truck cruise, tours, speakers and an appearance by Tim Ridley of the Road Dog Trucking channel and Greg Evigan of “B.J. & the Bear” TV fame. There were meetings for chapters and one-make collectors, and childrens’ entertainment. The event ended with a cruise. 30 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017

ROAD TEST: 2017 RAM 1500 REBEL

A Different Beast Story and photos by Jordan Allan When asked to write a story on the Ram 1500 Rebel, a large majority of people would first think to compare it to Ford’s F-150 Raptor, and at first you can understand why. On first thought, both are basically souped-up versions of the trucks they are derived from, having added a ton of exterior upgrades and greatly improving the off-road capability. However, once you really delve into it, you’ll find that although the trucks do share the same ideology, they really both saw different approaches taken. The Raptor truly is an off-road-capable machine that really doesn’t have too much in common with its F-150 brethren other than its

basic platform, while the Rebel is more of an off-road appearance package which, while not completely void of capability upgrades, shares many of the same characteristics of the rest of the Ram 1500 lineup. All of this is to say that while both trucks do offer something very different, they are both done well and bring something completely unique to the table. The Rebel shares the same basic look as many of the other Ram 1500s but does add a few extras that would really make it stand out at your local Ram dealership lot. The bold grille is Rebel-exclusive and sees the big and bold ‘RAM’ letters prominently displayed, while underneath sees an off-road-oriented skid plate added to the mix. The truck sits on a set of 33-inch Toyo Open Country A/T tires that perform excellently both on- and off-road, and are wrapped around a set of Rebel-exclusive 17-inch cast-aluminum wheels with matte black pockets. All of this, combined with the awesome Granite Crystal Metallic exterior colour found on our tester, provide the Rebel with a unique look that is definitely bolder and overall more aggressive than anything else Ram currently offers. The interior of the Rebel doesn’t stray too far away from a regular 1500, save for some red accent material found throughout, high-back front bucket seats, and some tire tread embroidering on both the front and back seats. This means that, yes, the dial-based gearshift is featured and is still something that I will have to get used to in what is an otherwise good-looking and functional interior. The 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 engine does come standard for the Rebel, but luckily for me, our tester was fitted with the much cooler 5.7L Hemi V8 engine pushing out an impressive 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission. The Hemi

Throughout my time driving in the city or on local highways, I found that the Rebel carried the same on-road prowess as the rest of the 1500 lineup by providing an ultra-smooth ride, ample passing power, and a comfortable and luxurious cabin. This, I believe, is where a huge difference in philosophies takes place between the Raptor and the Rebel in that, although you certainly wouldn’t say the Raptor performs poorly on the road (far from it, in fact), it’s plainly obvious that it was built to run off-road in just about any situation and that good performance on pavement is more of a bonus. The Rebel appears to be more the opposite of that in the sense that while it would almost certainly perform better than most vehicles when the pavement ends, highway driving is still on the radar and it does so in a way few other trucks can.

gives the Rebel an almost hot-rod-like feel on the road with its great acceleration and aggressive exhaust note, and would surely be the engine of choice should I ever decide to purchase one of these. Now, during my test in the Rebel, I was able to get quite a bit of seat time but mostly on the road, as one might expect. Although it would’ve been nice to take it to a setting where I could really see what it was made of, I had to settle for a bumpy gravel road where, as expected, the truck performed admirably. Utilizing the air suspension’s ride height settings, I put the truck in off-road mode, which brings the front end to a more level stance and provides 1-inch more lift than a standard Ram with air suspension would. The truck was able to navigate even the roughest patches of the gravel road and almost had me forgetting that I was on one.

If I was asked to choose between the Raptor and the Rebel, I don’t think I could quickly or easily come up with an honest answer. Price points definitely would have to be considered and our testers saw an almost $20,000 difference with the Raptor coming in around $89,000 as tested with the Rebel costing around $69,000. If money wasn’t the deciding factor, the next thing I would consider would be lifestyle. If I’m going to be seeking out and going on all sorts of challenging off-road adventures, the Raptor is probably the way to go, but if I want a truck that I would be more comfortable driving to work during the week with the capability to transform into something of a weekend warrior (albeit an expensive one), I would probably choose the Rebel. Luckily for me, I don’t have to make that choice. After spending some significant time with each one, I have gained an even larger appreciation for what they can both individually offer and would suggest that no matter which one you go with, you won’t be disappointed.

FEATURE: SPECIAL EDITION PICKUPS

Standing Out Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

H

ave you noticed how many pickup truck special editions are on the market this year? Chevy alone is pushing five – more if you count the HD-specific ones. Even full-size newcomer Nissan is offering dealer-available equipment that will “personalize” your new Titan – as if the Titan wasn’t new enough. Toyota is also doing it, adding to its already popular TRD Pro model. Ram is also on board, Ram 1500 Rebel Mojave Sand

GMC Sierra 2500HD All Terrain X

In the past, special editions were most often about the mechanicals – engines, powertrains and suspensions being the key components that were offered in these packages. In the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s, buyers scoffed at the “all show, no go” versions of what are today iconic models. Despite the paint and decals, the reality of the muscle car era was that for every 440 cubic-inch V8, Hurst shifter-equipped ground pounder ordered, thousands of anaemic V6 models were built. The performance is what made those few cars stand out, and that’s what those owners wanted and paid for. Mind you, it’s the rarity of those special models that make them so collectible today. That was the mindset at the time. Colour and perhaps some decals were the only other real personalized choices available – if you wanted to stand out, you went with performance upgrades. Special edition pickups were no exception. Regardless of who built them (Dodge Warlock, Chevy Silverado SS, Ford Lightning), special edition trucks were all meant to go. Today, though, the emphasis has shifted to the outward appearance of the truck and the special interior appointments. The current crop of special editions reflects this popularity. Like a peacock fanning its tail for all to see, these trucks are all about showing off. Doing so makes sure they are seen as unique – which is what they are (from a looks standpoint) and that’s what their owners want them

spring boarding off the Rebel and regular Ram with multiple grille treatments, hood designs, wheel treatments and wild colours. Ford already offers the most multi-level trim packages for its F-150 and SuperDuty; yet for the 2018 model year they are already pushing four special editions that can be mated to the trim of your choosing. As its advertising says “it’s about standing out in the pack.” Of course, special editions have been around almost as long as automobiles themselves – it’s an obvious way to drive sales by offering something unique over and above the regular. But, the real hook has always been the limited time each is available. So while this sales tactic is not new, the content that appears in these special editions today has changed, particularly in trucks. 40 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017

the time, Ford’s SVT (specials vehicles team) was building some great stuff – including the soonto-be-famous and fast SVT Lightning pickup. In conversations with those same SVT engineers, it came out that Harley was behind the lack of performance upgrades. They recognized back then that it was the “look” that would sell, and they were right. But past the Harley-Davidson tie-in, it seems they tapped into the personalization trend, which is now mainstream. As for where the special edition ideas come from, Morrison says, firstly, his whole design team is made up of “truck guys” so they draw inspiration from their own likes. Past that, they take feedback from dealers and spend time scanning readers’ blog posts and customer comments on various Ram enthusiast websites. Seems like it’s worthwhile making your wants known on the internet.

to be. Being fast is much less of a priority these days. Does that mean buyers have matured? Or are the choices of the “selfie-generation” spilling into their truck-buying tastes. While I wonder about that one, it is obvious to me that manufacturers have discovered that the limited time each special edition is available is what’s really making them saleable. Some series are even numbered to clearly spell out the temporary nature of the release.

Perhaps this custom trend will, in the long run, spawn some very collectible pickups. Today, everyone wants to be unique, so why should truck buyers be different? The 2018 F-150, which is itself a refreshed model, isn’t due till late this year. At that time, the current roster of trim packages will be augmented with four new special edition packages.

Jim Morrison, head of the Ram brand, also sees the current trend. “Everybody wants something unique and specialized,” says Morrison, “so what we are offering is one step up from just adding accessories – we’re extending the custom touches to trim and paint, things the factory can do more affordably than customers can.” Frankly, from a style-only point of view, Ford was probably one of the first manufacturers to spot this trend and capitalize on it by partnering with Harley Davidson starting in 2000. I remember when these trucks came out and I was surprised by the fact that these special editions offered no mechanical upgrades whatsoever. At

hen you own a custom shop like Portland, Oregon’s Carolina Kustoms, you get a lot of notoriety, which comes with the territory. Risk is part of being bold, of creating something for which others might criticize you. So when it came time to build a truck for himself, Lonnie Thompson went with something different, a 2012 Ram 1500 R/T, which he bought used from a friend. The first thing Thompson did when the Ram was back in his shop was dismantle it. He knew he wanted it to lay out, which would require fabricating a custom made monster c-notch and air bag brackets. This allowed him to use custom Michigan Metal Works A-arms and a four-link rear with Watts linkage, Slam Specialties RE8 bags and KYB shocks all around, controlled through an Accuair valve block with a speed switch, and two Air Zenith compressors backed by a 12-gallon aluminum air tank. This Ram is a single cab, so going in, you know it wasn’t to be the family hauler or a shop truck. Planned all along as a display vehicle and calling card for his business, the braking system received an upgrade to drilled and slotted rotors from SSBC, which can be seen through the big windows in the Intro wheels. Do you think off-the-shelf wheels have enough lip for you? Not for Thompson, who had Intro custom build a set that runs 24x10 in. in front, and a cavernous 24x15 in. in the rear with an 11.5-in. lip. Those rear treads measure P405/35R24, were built by Pirelli once every three years and offered only by special order, just in case you were wondering. Short of narrowing the rear end to something akin to a drag race differential, Lonnie was going to have to go a different route to cover those insanely wide rear tires. Having had the foresight to do a lot of measuring well before removing the stock pickup bed, Lonnie knew the dually bed off a 2010-2013 Ram Mega Cab would fit. He also found that beyond those years, the bed length grew to better accommodate the tradesmen that normally buy dually trucks, and later model beds wouldn’t fit a 1500 series pickup nor would the fenders match its contours. Using an AVS wheel tub kit, the bed was then seam sealed to waterproof and insulate it, before lining it with SEM Products Truck

Bed Liner. Tinting the taillights and marker lights completed the body modifications. Stripping the truck’s matte paint, that the previous owner had applied, in its entirety, Thompson recovered the Ram with PPG Viper Red and six coats of PPG 2002 Clear for a smooth, flawless finish. While Lonnie did the paint, body and sheet metal work himself, he shared fabrication duties on the Ram with his two sons, Dakota and Dennis. Aside from the K&N cold air intake, Magnaflow exhaust system, and a tuner used to keep track of the air pressure in the bags, the 5.7L Hemi engine was kept pretty much stock for reliability and ease of maintenance. With 390 hp at 5,700 rpm and 407 lb/ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, delivered through the stock 6-speed automatic transmission, this was sufficient and one less thing Lonnie needed to change or modify on his truck.

From any angle, this is one tough-looking truck.

Behind the AVS wheel tubs and notch cover, there’s a 12 gallon air tank and twin Air Zenith compressors.

On the inside, Thompson backed the factory Alpine head unit with a 600watt Rockford Fosgate amplifier, and two 12- Lonnie flushin. JL Audio JL W3 mounted the subwoofers in a custom Accuair controls box, which was built by in the dash. Scraping Pavement’s Jacob Rohde. The stereo components were sourced through Portland’s Stereo King. This concluded a little over three months of work on the Ram for Lonnie and his crew, and now it was on to shows and events as he had intended. Ironically, even though the Ram didn’t get taken outside of the shop more than three times since it was built, everywhere it did go all Thompson saw were a whole lot of thumbs up signs, great feedback for a distinctly different hauler.

RV-ING: 2018 TIFFIN ALLEGRO RED 37PA

Class “A” Indeed Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

A

sk non-RVers to describe a Class A motorhome, and they might reply: “it’s a bus with beds.” Ask someone who owns a Class A motorhome, and they’ll take up your whole weekend describing the minute details and differences between brands. These varied descriptions are both right. But what both of these groups may have in common is that they dwell on the visible physical features of the coach. In other words they’re describing the things they can see. However, having driven many coaches, across a very wide price range, I’ve found that the higher the retail price the more likely it is that what you are really paying for is something you can’t see – and that’s the chassis and powertrain. Tiffin Motorhomes of Red Bay, Alabama, builds the higher-priced coaches I’m talking about, but the construction of the chassis, they leave up to Freightliner. So, when I recently had a chance to take a 2018 Allegro Red out for a drive, I ended up spending about the same amount of time researching the chassis as I did driving and doing my walk-through. Before I get into the specs involved in building a superior chassis, let me answer a question you might be asking about now – “how do you know how good a chassis is – especially when all the bits are under the coach?” Good question. Straight answer – the quality of the ride. With this Freightliner, you feel the road-confidence of the chassis. Slip it into gear and it powers up smoothly with a supreme sense of confidence. At speed, it glides down the road, without any grinds, whistles, creaks or groans. As you pull through curves, you can feel that the centre of gravity on the coach is low and planted – there is simply no swaying of the body despite its height. The steering feels connected, yet it’s gentle on the hands and gives no rough feedback. In the case of the Allegro Red, the rear diesel engine design also offers a very quiet interior and the power comes on smoothly – there is no drive-line shudder or transmission noise. The air suspension supports the coach softly and firmly, while the set-back front axle offers short turning circles and easy steering. Freightliner Custom Chassis is part of the Daimler Group which includes Mercedes Benz and Western Star trucks. These companies have a reputation for engineering leadership, 54 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017

power. Sachs shocks by Rolls-Royce and Neway air suspension support the body, and the electricals are made by Delco. All this is supported on 9 x 2.75-inch high-strength steel frame rails that run the full length of the coach. Inside, the driver’s cockpit is designed not only to be functional but also comfortable for the many hours you’ll be spending in that powered leather seat. All the controls are plainly marked on rocker switches and easily within reach. The main three dashboard gauges provide all the vital engine data at a glance, while the push-button transmission and auxiliary controls are on the left. Fans, power blinds, cruise control, tilt wheel, outside feeds from three cameras and panoramic visibility through the tinted glass all combine for one nice driving experience.

a decent pedigree for FCC which builds what drives and supports the Red, but unlike some other cookie-cutter chassis makers, they customize each and every chassis to the specifications of each brand, model and respective floorplans. No manufacturers get the same chassis. This fact is key to achieving the quality of the ride I felt the first time I drove the Red.

The floorplan in the Red is new this year. It features four slideouts – two on each side. The bedroom slide also pulls out the bathroom wall with its double sinks. The 72x80-inch King-size bed is housed in the other slide – this one also has windows (when open) for a nice cross-breeze. The salon and kitchen slides open up a ball-room sized space in the front of the coach, all the better to show off the ceramic tile flooring. With all this space, the L-shaped sofa and lounge recliner look right at home. The focus of this seating is the television over the fireplace set amidships. This large flat-panel TV (like the one in the bedroom) is connected to surround-sound system and can be fed by cable, antenna, satellite (or optional in-motion satellite dish).

So, while Freightliner finishes the chassis, there are a few other well-known name-brand suppliers that are integral to this chassis’ construction. Cummins supplies a 6.7-litre turbo-diesel engine (360hp – 800 lb-ft torque) that pushes power through a six-speed Allison automatic transmission. Michelin XZE2 22.5-inch radial tires on aluminum wheels turn on Detroit I-Beam axles while Bendix air brakes provide stopping

My test unit featured a small workstation table with two chairs – this would double as the eating area. However Tiffin gives you the option of a booth dinette or U-shaped dinette. Your choice. It’s about how much company you expect – or want. The kitchen itself is a study in elegant efficiency. The classic cabinetry is all made of lacquered hardwood, the drawers slide on ball bearings and are a slow-close design, while the

countertops are textured solid surfaces. Note that the three-burner gas range and the sinks both have matching covers. The residential size double-door refrigerator features a freezer on the bottom while built into the cabinets is the convection/microwave. For cleaning up, there is a standard plug-in central vacuum system installed.

A standard 8.0 KW Onan generator provides power when you’re not plugged into shore power. It’s diesel and draws off the coach tanks, so it could run for hundreds of hours if needed. If you do find yourself boondocking with the Red, you’ll relax knowing that you also carry 90 gallons of fresh water and 24 gallons of propane.

The bedroom slides I mentioned open up a soothing space with windows, fans, mood lighting, built-in wardrobes and a huge hanging closet that can also house a washer/dryer. A pocket door closes for privacy, though a second door gives night-time access to the bathroom. The bath itself also has a ceramic tile floor and a porcelain toilet with lots of space around it. The double sinks feature a deep, long, hard-surface counter

Many owners of Class A’s opt to take a car along with them on longer trips. Here, again, the Freightliner chassis and Cummins/Allison powertrain combine to offer up a 10,000-lb tow rating. More than enough capacity, even for a large tow-behind.

with dual mirrored medicine cabinets above them. The oversize shower has a built-in seat, towel bar, overhead skylight and sliding glass door. The accent and direct lighting in here is nicely designed. It’s worth noting that when the slide-outs are closed, they preserve a passageway through the coach so that everything (bedroom and bathroom) are still accessed while in transit or at a quick lunch stop. The HVAC system in this Tiffin is designed to provide comfort in any weather – quietly. It features two low-profile roof-mounted A/C units that work with a 15,000 BTU heat pump. Heating and cooling are diffused through a series of directional ceiling vents. Along with thick windows, ample insulation, heated tanks and heavy duty electrical, the Tiffin Red is four-season capable. Storage inside the Red is designed into every available space to carry everything from soup to nuts. But under the bus, you’ll find another 119 cubic-feet of basement storage. These spaces are accessed through several latched doors all along the body of the coach. 56 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017

A purchase aspect of higher end coaches I should mention is their ability to be personalized. It follows that the more money you spend, the more inside perks you can afford. Tiffin caters to this want with a list of optional interior appointments that I couldn’t even start to list – there are just too many. But, often, along with that, buyers want something that is unique – on the outside. To scratch this itch Tiffin offers six unique exterior paint schemes. This is full-body paint, not decals. They use premium grade paints and seal them with four layers of super-clearcoat for ultraviolet protection. They then add an additional layer of scratch-resistant plastic coating which protects the front of the coach, stairwell, and entry door lock. While only a small group of RVers will ever own a Class A coach of this caliber, it’s fascinating to see how all these components can be combined to create not only an opulent coach, but one that drives better than most passenger sedans. Frankly, this was one unit I had a hard time returning. If you’re in the market, you’ll want to experience the Tiffin Allegro Red for yourself. STUCK TRUCKS

Hard to tell exactly what it is but you can bet someone got in trouble over this.

How many guys does it take to get a truck out of a mud pit?

Perhaps he should’ve stayed a little closer to the path.

Hard to tell what the goal here was but one thing is clear... it didn’t work.

Ford owners will love this, Ram owners... not so much.

Not sure that we’ve ever seen three trucks stuck in the same mud pit.

We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool Trucks Plus hat! 62 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2017
