Chevrolet Confirms Addition of ZR2 to Silverado Lineup Chevrolet has officially confirmed the future expansion of the brand’s ZR2 trim, which relaunched on the Colorado mid-size pickup in 2017 and adds significant high-performance capability with a wide variety of drive settings both on and off the road. Not much information was shown by Chevrolet other than the ZR2 badge shown here and a quick video clip of a truck taking on some serious muddy terrain. It will be interesting to see how far Chevrolet goes with a potential off-road model following the success of the big, brash Ford F-150 Raptor and the more recent Ram 1500 TRX. Chevrolet says to tune in this fall regarding this future edition.

Big, Bold & Special The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Carhartt Edition
Story and photos by Dan Heyman
I
don’t know about you, but I am a big fan of special edition vehicles – and there have been some very cool special edition pickups over the years, though that market has cooled a bit over the last while. Think the Dodge Macho Power Wagon of the late ‘70s (hello, Simon & Simon fans!), the Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson Edition or the absolutely wonderfully-named Jeep J10 Honcho. “But wait!”, I hear you saying “where are all the GMs?” Well, here’s one: the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Carhartt Edition – that’s “Carhartt”, with two “Ts” -- here to show you that yes! The special edition truck still exists – in a way -- and it looks darn good.
Which is a big deal for this truck in particular because the latest line of GM’s heavy-duty trucks…well, I’ll put it to you this way: they are an absolute eyeful, especially when seen head-on. The Carhartt reduces the effect a little by blacking-out most of the grille, save for a few chrome strips that are actually a nice touch without having the effect of a Braun razor staring back at you. Still has the DRLs mounted at the hood’s leading edge, though, with the headlights dropped below that like you see on so many SUVs and CUVs these days. In that light, I understand what GM was aiming for here; just not sure if that treatment works when your fascia is about four-feet tall. That’s a lot of real estate. For its part, the Carhartt – more a $4,200 trim package on the LTZ than a special edition, really – is mostly a styling package that adds special two-tone leather seats (they are properly luxurious-feeling), all sorts of blacked-out bits including the classic bowtie and Z71 logos, body-colour front and rear bumpers, 20-in. wheels and how can we forget the pièce de resistance: Carhartt badges and yellow pinstriping. You’ll also find those badges on the seats as well, and even the Silverado logos on the doors get a little yellow Carhartt flare as well. There’s also spray-in bedliner, roof marker lamps and all-weather floor mats with more Carhartt logos. It’s a simple transformation but darned if it isn’t right on the mark for the truck, maintaining its toughness but classing things up a little to just the right level. Speaking of Carhartt: while many readers likely know who they are, here’s a quick primer: essentially, it’s a group that manufactures work and outdoor clothing, tool bags, even coolers and pet gear. Personally, I first heard of it in a hip-hop song – but that’s a different story. That’s all in addition to other pieces that come with the LTZ package such as Z71 off-road suspension, Bose

premium audio, power tailgate and rear window, Chevrolet Infotainment 3 with 8-inch display and HD 360 parking camera as well as a bed camera, heated front and rear seats plus ventilated front seats, wireless charging and more. There’s a whole heck of a lot to unpack in this Silverado.
the former. It comes with a rolling bed cover – which is great – as well as a 400W outlet and grooves cut into either corner of the rear bumper large enough for a steel-toed work boot. Nothing mechanical or electric that could break, no extra mechanical parts to concern oneself with.
Thing is, the more you do, the more you realize that it ain’t perfect; for all its features, there’s a lot of scratchable plastic inside and while it’s nice to have an 8-in. display, the competition is coming a lot bigger than that and coupled with the button and knobs that pepper the lower half of the centre stack, it’s a busy and somewhat old-school look. That screen looks small atop all that, as does the digital rear-view mirror which is great to have, but looks miniature considering the massive space in which it sits.
You can get either a gas or diesel V8 for power, both measuring 6.6 litres. I had the Duramax diesel, meaning 910 pound-feet of torque and the ability to tow up to 18,500 pounds and haul over 4,500 lbs. This is one capable vehicle and when unladen, it feels like there really isn’t anything that’s going to be able to stop it and with a mug like that, you really do get the sense it will plow straight through a brick wall and casually pick the remnants out of its maw as it drives off. Add features like an exhaust brake, meanwhile, and you see just how capable the 2500HD is.
And it is a massive space. There’s as much room in my tester’s Crew Cab as there is in the first two rows of the Chevrolet Suburban and even the tallest among us can stretch out in back. If you’d rather store gear than transport people, the bottom cushions flip up for more storage, though there isn’t a flat load floor, as the big Allison ten-speed auto’s bell housing needs room to stretch its legs. Two bed lengths are available with the Crew Cab; the 6.8 footer on my truck and an 8.1 footer as well, though the Carhartt can only be had with
Capable, but nicely frugal as well; during my time with this 6,500-plus pound behemoth, I saw just around 7.2 litres per 100 km of fuel usage on the highway, and just a little more in the city. That torque mated with that 10-speed auto is a marriage made in heaven when it comes to fuel efficiency. Rear suspension duties are handled by a set of leaf springs, but Chevrolet has tuned the rear well enough to keep it comfortable enough over even repetitive bumps to keep it from skipping too violently – not hard to tell that Chevy’s been building heavy duty trucks for many a year – for many a decade, in fact. GM’s magnetic ride control adaptive dampers, however, are not available on the 2500 but you do get a 2-speed transfer case and automatic Eaton locking rear differential. Oil coolers for both the engine and transmission, meanwhile, keep everything cool; from the stiffness of the body and chassis to the capabilities of the drivetrain, not to mention the off-road tires that come with the Carhartt, there really feels like there’s nothing that can stop this truck. What this truck will do – and did when I had it, numerous times – is stop people in their tracks because it is an imposing thing. Imposing, but thanks to some smart stylistic decisions by GM (and probably by Carhartt, too), it manages to be imposing in an authoritative if not overly flashy way. It’s a truck that doesn’t have to try too hard to make its presence felt, and that’s a feat not always easily accomplished in this business – even when it comes to those special editions we all know and love.

KEEPING GENERATIONS ON THE ROAD ™
A New Player
The Hyundai Santa Cruz ignites a new compact truck market Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Hyundai Canada
T
he Canadian pickup truck market just got a new player. Hyundai has jumped into the market with a compact pickup offering – the Santa Cruz - that promises to tow up to 5,000 lb despite its size. This is great news for RVers whose interest in pickup trucks is centred around towing. So, while Hyundai is first into this pool, Ford has also just announced the coming Maverick, another new compact offering. This looks like the start of a trend, a most welcome one. As we all know, the traditional half-ton has grown to outsized proportions in the past 20 years. Even today’s mid-size trucks are larger than the half-tons of two generations ago. And, it’s this truck body growth that has led to a sales opportunity at the bottom end of the size scale. Yes, the compact truck is back. The 2022 Santa Cruz breaks new ground within the SUV, Truck and Crossover segments by offering what Hyundai calls a Sport Adventure Vehicle. This Santa Cruz boasts bold yet sophisticated design, powerful and efficient powertrain options, a flexible open bed for gear, connectivity and an all-wheel drive platform that is equally at home in urban and adventure-focused environments. The Santa Cruz Sport Adventure Vehicle begins production in Montgomery, Alabama in June and will be available for sale this summer. Santa Cruz was developed to satisfy a need found by Hyundai’s consumer research. That research found consumers, often living in urban environments, wanted a vehicle built for escapes to weekend adventures of all kinds. Many of these customers carried gear and equipment that is better suited to an open bed rather than a typical SUV. These buyers wanted versatile transportation that is flexible for urban, adventure, occupational or even home improvement gear. 20 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2021
To satisfy this need, Santa Cruz is built with a secure, open bed area which includes a lockable, sliding tonneau cover fitted as standard in Canada, hidden bed storage and versatile bed extension accessories. At the same time, these customers still value the secure utility of a compact SUV, with its comfort and passenger space, so it’s a four-door five-passenger cabin setup. Santa Cruz will come with a 2.5-litre direct-injected turbocharged engine with an estimated 275+ hp and 310+ lb-ft. of torque linked to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). This DCT includes steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters for manual shifting. The HTRAC AWD system was developed as a multi-mode system, providing an electronic, variabletorque-split clutch with active torque control between the front and rear axles. (Only AWD is coming to Canada) This system has a wide range of torque distribution variability, tuned for conditions such as straight-line acceleration, medium- and high-speed cornering, and hill starts. For those customers who tow their weekend gear, the 2.5L Turbo AWD boasts a generous 5,000 lbs. of towing capability with Canadian-exclusive Multi Terrain Control modes: Mud, Sand and Snow. Santa Cruz offers safety and convenience features, with an array of advanced safety technologies as part of the Hyundai SmartSense feature suite. These include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with pedestrian and cyclist detection; Lane Keeping Assist; Driver Attention Warning; Lane Following Assist; Blind Spot Collision Avoidance Assist; Safe Exit Warning and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist. Other safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control are available.
Connectivity in the Santa Cruz includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto displayed on an eight-inch split-screen. It also has wireless charging and Hyundai’s Bluelink connected car system. Bluelink is complimentary for three years and includes features such as Remote Start with Climate Control, Remote Door Lock/Unlock, Find My Vehicle, and others. Bluelink features can be accessed via mybluelink.ca web portal and Bluelink smartphone app. Pricing for the Santa Cruz has not been set at this time. We think that will be closer to July. Units are set to arrive at dealers by August. If you’d like a closer look at the Santa Cruz, you can do that on the Truck King YouTube channel. We recently got up close and personal with a preproduction model at Hyundai HQ in Markham, ON.

Shaking up the Market
2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid Story by Spencer Whitney, photos courtesy of Ford Canada
Y
ou can watch traffic on any village main street, bustling freeway, or arctic highway in Canada, and you’re sure to see plenty of one thing: Ford F-150s. Despite the auto industry taking a huge hit in 2020, Ford still managed to move over 125,000 trucks, and the majority of those were F150 models. In fact, the F-150 has been the best-selling truck in Canada for over half a century – and the best-selling vehicle of any type for over a decade. But until 2021, all those trucks were either diesel or gas powered. With the introduction of the 2021 F-150 PowerBoost hybrid, Ford is seeking to shake up the market – and redefine what electrification means for hard-working Canadians. The ubiquity of hybrid vehicles has not gone unnoticed. Passenger cars are a perfect candidate for small, economical powerplants to begin with, and hybrids appeared as a cost-effective way of reducing fuel consumption
in those vehicles over two decades ago. But save for some experimental efforts in the early 2000s, pickup trucks have largely avoided the trend. It could be because of the massive power requirement in situations like towing and hauling, or it may simply be a matter of marketing and perception. Either way, vehicle launches over past year have certainly shaken up the truck segment as the entire auto industry prepares to march full-speedahead with electrification. Ford smartly chose to wait until the F-150’s generational update to implement a hybrid system in their most popular vehicle – making it the only truck maker to offer such a configuration. The venerable pickup has been completely redesigned, allowing engineers to make an honest effort of combining electric drive with proven gas powerplants, rather than trying to rush a hybrid system into an existing platform. But it’s already very hard to argue with what the F-150 has to offer in 2021, even without ticking the hybrid option. With giant touch screens and just about every technological feature you can put in a vehicle today, Ford seems to be preparing to bridge the gap between combustion and full-electric with this 14th generation F-series truck. Configured like other parallel-hybrid vehicles, the F-150 PowerBoost option adds a 35kw motor-generator positioned between the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 and a range-standard 10-speed automatic transmission. This means that the electric motor can assist at any time, while benefiting from regenerative engine braking back through the entire driveline. Components shared across all F-150 models (like brakes, transfer case and axles) downstream of the electric motor might keep parts and service costs low in the long term, and this design also allows the usual trim and feature packages buyers are accustomed to. EcoBoost V6 motors already provide V8-like power, and the 3.5L by itself boasts a whopping 400 horsepower and 530 ft-lb of torque. In PowerBoost form this grows to 430 hp and 570 ft-lb. While this may not seem like much of an increase, hybrids like this are meant to reduce fuel consumption at low RPM and low loads - situations like stop-and-go traffic or highway
22 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2021
cruising. Thankfully, the gas powerplant is more than happy towing, hauling, and merging – tasks that only benefit from the addition of electric power. Although it is paired with a surprisingly small under-bed 1.5kWh battery, the F-150 PowerBoost still lays down unbeatable fuel economy numbers. In our mix of city & highway testing, we managed to squeeze over 950 km before the fuel light came on (about 9.5L/100km) but with economical driving and mostly highway driving, it’s possible to achieve over 1,100km of range on the 115L tank. Ford says that highway mileage is around 9.3L/100km but extensive real-world testing by other reviewers suggests sub-9.0L figures are easily possible. It goes without saying that this combination of economy and power is unattainable in just about any other truck on the market today. However, the PowerBoost’s real attraction comes from its ability to supply, well, power. Pop open a flap in the bed and you suddenly have access to a massive 7.2kW, 240-volt, 30-amp twist-lock outlet, along with 2.4kW worth of standard 120-volt sockets. (More outlets are available in the cab for powering light duty devices like laptops and battery chargers.) Contractors and hobbyists, take note: you won’t need to lug along a generator to the cabin or job site, because this truck has it all built in. Dubbed “Pro Power Onboard,” the engine and battery automatically keep up with power demands – even while driving. We tested high-amperage circular saws and air compressors – tools that have a habit of popping breakers on weak electrical systems – with no problems whatsoever. For lighter 120-volt demands, the hybrid battery will be used before the engine kicks in, making it a silent source of power. High output generator abilities make the hybrid ($4,850) & Pro Power Onboard ($1,000) options attractive, because a good quality 7.5kW generator runs about $2,000 – one that’s noisy, stinky, and takes up bed space. While Pro Power Onboard is available in some form on most new-generation F-150s, only the PowerBoost has the 7.2kW socket, enabling you to run power-hungry equipment, or (possibly more importantly) plug in your RV trailer in remote locations – and on a full tank at full load, it’ll power that RV for over 30 hours straight. As far as drivability goes, the PowerBoost makes for a comfortable experi-
ence – you would never know it’s an EV until the gas engine shuts down on deceleration and at low speeds. A soft hum even emits from the truck while it idles around in electric-only mode, warning pedestrians of its presence. With most hybrids it’s possible to manoeuvre around while being very gentle on the accelerator to avoid kicking in the engine, but this is a bit more difficult on the F-150. Because it’s such a heavy vehicle and the EV components in there aren’t hugely powerful, we found that the gas motor would fire up at anything but a turtle’s pace. All these features and technologies have pushed the F-150 into luxury car territory – nearly $85,000 (before tax) in fully optioned form – but what you get is a refined ride that feels decidedly un-truck-like. As each generation goes by, Ford’s flagship pickup gets smoother, quieter, and more enjoyable to drive. With the recent announcement of a fully-electric F-150, it may not be very long before Ford makes it attractive for Canadian buyers to choose a fuel-free pickup. Many will refuse – after all, we live in a very big country and gas stations are still quick, common and convenient – but the PowerBoost could end up being the go-to choice for those who want economy without the uncertainty of EV charging. One thing is for sure: with more choices in powertrain, the F-150 is sure to remain Canada’s favourite truck for many years to come.

ike other automakers, General Motors has had quite the interesting last year-and-a-half due to COVID-19 — first shifting gears to produce PPE in its factories, and then later idling those same factories thanks to a global semiconductor chip shortage. However it hasn’t stopped them from rolling out fresh product, like the next-generation T1 truck platform
that several models under the brand umbrella are based upon including the Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon and Chevrolet siblings Suburban and Tahoe, the latter which we tested over the course of a week. “With an increasing number of SUVs on the market, we knew the all-new Tahoe and Suburban needed to reach higher than ever,” says Tim Herrick, vice president of GM global product programs. “We transformed Tahoe and Suburban to offer all-new technologies and features and deliver a better driving experience, while staying true to the versatility and capability that have earned people’s trust for generations.” One of the things I immediately noticed about the redesigned SUV is how much longer it appeared than before. Gaining a full 169 millimetres in length, the wheelbase is stretched out 125 millimetres, and combined with a lower load floor, drastically increases occupant and cargo space. In fact, passengers now have 254 millimetres more legroom while sitting at the very back and behind them, can fit a whopping 66 percent more cargo. Another first is the introduction of a sliding middle bench able to move about 140 millimetres forward or backward. Helped by larger rear doors, this enables a much easier ingress and egress of people and stuff. I also loved the ease of operation for the onetouch-fold seats, making the loading of large objects like a dining room table from an Ikea run a breeze.

Having driven the latest Escalade, there are pleasantly many similarities between the two interiors. The split second row in our grade-topping High Country loaner is a great place to spend some quality isolated time, featuring leather upholstery, individually reclining backrests, pullout armrest with cupholders, dual 12.6-inch entertainment monitors and access to the kickin’ Bose 10-speaker surround-sound stereo. On the outside, the fifth-generation Tahoe looks fantastic. The headlight housings have shrunken down to about a third of the size compared to the outgoing SUV, and the grill is nearly the entire width of the front fascia, the High Country’s given stunning bronze coloured horizontal slats. The power-deploying full-length running boards remain semihidden until a door is opened. Pop the hood and the turbocharged 3.0-litre Duramax inline-six diesel engine is revealed, first introduced in the 2020 Silverado and now carried over into the full-size utility lineup representing a segment exclusive. The mill is rated at 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque, mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Strong and light, the engine is comprised of an aluminum block, forged steel crankshaft and connecting rods, and blended silicon and aluminum pistons for improved heat resistance and reduced expansion. The Duramax pulls hard when you get on the accelerator and gives off a throaty growl as only internal combustion can. The ride and handling isn’t bad either thanks to the Air Ride Adaptive Suspension with Magnetic Ride Control (MRC). The former is adjustable up to 101 millimetres, automatically lowering 19 millimetres during highway operation to cut down drag, and the latter is constantly reading road conditions and changes shock damping on the fly to give a composed and comfortable experience at all times. Efficiency is usually expected from a diesel, and this SUV delivers. Aided by the aforementioned aerodynamic benefits of the MRC as well as active front grill shutters, over a week of driving in largely city conditions, I averaged approximately 13.4 L/100 km of fuel economy. The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is built in Arlington, Texas and priced as tested at $96,058 MSRP.

PRODUCTS: ROAD TEST: A/T 2021 TIRES LINCOLN NAVIGATOR
Big Refinement
Story by Jordan Allan, photos courtesy of Lincoln Canada New for 2021: The Lincoln Navigator remains basically unchanged for 2021 and is part of the fourth generation originally introduced back in 2018. There has been word of some sort of refresh for 2022, but nothing officially from Lincoln. Segment Competitors: BMW X7, Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, Infiniti QX80, Lexus LX, Land Rover Range Rover The Skinny: The Lincoln Navigator is the top SUV in Lincoln’s seemingly always growing lineup and is way more than just an up fitted Ford as many have suggested over the years. This is especially true for the current Lincoln Navigator, which was introduced as its 4th generation back in 2018. The large luxury SUV offers a very distinctive and upscale look with a gorgeous interior that could pass for something out of an old sci-fi flick. It’s quiet, smooth and - even with the shorter wheelbase option – has more than enough room for up to 7 fullsize adults or a single family and a ton of gear. The middle row comes with very nice captain’s chairs and a screen on either side mounted to the back of the front seats, while the third row is genuinely large and comfortable enough for an adult to endure a long drive. Given how big and heavy the Navigator is, it feels surprisingly light while driving in terms of steering, handling and acceleration. Though it’s not a V8 as some of its competitors have, the EcoBoost V6 provides impressive power numbers and is 28 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2021

Cons: It’s not just in this vehicle, but I still have a hard time with a button-style or even-rotary style shifter. This one in particular isn’t in the best location under the centre stack and I found myself having to double check that I actually pressed ‘Park’ rather than change something on the infotainment system. The Verdict: The Navigator is a genuinely good example of a large luxury SUV and provides everything you’d expect one would, but there
controlled well by the 10-speed automatic. On highway drives, it takes corners very calmly and with no sense of panic and while in city driving situations, it performs about as well as any vehicle this size could thanks to the very light steering feel I mentioned before. Sightlines for the driver are fantastic and the heads–up display is actually one of the better ones I’ve encountered. Feedback from passengers in all three rows was all positive in terms of space and comfort, especially from anyone in the passenger seat who experienced the massage function. Although I didn’t get to do any towing myself during testing, the Navigator is rated to tow up to 8,300 lbs. which is slightly more than its American counterpart the Cadillac Escalade. Pros: Although they aren’t usually the greatest in the world, I always personally enjoy the massage functions in the front seats. Aside from that, the interior is always what stands out on the Navigator for me. The design is quite unique and it’s obvious high quality materials were used throughout.
will always be the notion out there that it can’t hold a candle to the likes of BMW, Mercedes or Audi. I will say there is a certain level of build-quality and refinement found in German vehicles that is not often matched by any North American competitors, but there are definitely some that are in the ball park and the Navigator is one of those. Although not cheap by any means at north of 100-grand as tested, the Navigator represents a slightly less-expensive option to these German examples and provides the same overall capability and experience which, in my mind, warrants some consideration at the very least.

Purpose-Built Trailers

ou might react to the photos in this review with a “wow, what a cute idea for a trailer.” However, Teardrop trailers have been around since the 1930’s. They have always appealed to those who wanted lightweight, minimalist overnight trailering. They have never been big sellers. The Teardrop design does lend itself to production, as it’s easy to build as it has very few corners – and the shape is space efficient and frankly, it looks cool. So, why don’t we see more of them on the road? The answer to that question has to do with the size. Small and cute quickly gives way to cramped and crowded for most people. For most RVers, even today, they are simply too small. However, times change, don’t they? Today we have an entire group of Covid-weary people who want to get out of town and camp for the first time. They are coming to RVing without any preconceived notions. These folks are looking at Teardrops with fresh eyes and, are also most likely to appreciate the fact that they can tow a Teardrop with whatever they now own – no need to upgrade to a truck or large SUV. Younger people, without kids, are also more outdoor active – meaning they will be spending most of their time outdoors doing things – rather than sitting in the trailer. So, the overnightonly accommodation of the Teardrop is just fine for them. As we’ll see, today’s Teardrop is also prepared for rough country towing and carries the systems you’ll need to dry camp in the back country. Add to all that the fact that these trailers are easy to tow, easy to park, and take up very little storage space. What we are looking at today is the TAG and TAG XL teardrop trailers. Built by NuCamp, these two are described as adventure campers. Each comes with a well-equipped rear galley, and a warm and cozy interior with a Queen-sized bed. Each has a 36 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE AUG/SEPT 2021

You’ll note that I’ve included the specs for both the TAG and TAG XL. The key difference between the two is width. An additional foot is added to the body size. This results in a larger bed and also adds counter space (and storage) in the rear kitchen. This floorplan change adds just an extra hundred pounds to the dry weight. Gross weight rating remains the same for both trailers. The TAG is certainly worth having a look at. These purposebuilt trailers are exactly the right RV for that couple who can see themselves enjoying the outdoors in an intimate trailer on their getaways. Get out there.
An upgrade to the standard TAG package is a Boondocking version. This trailer will tackle rougher terrain with Aggressive Off-Road Tires, an Aluminum Utility Platform, Boondock Entry Handle & Graphics, Nerf Bars/Running Boards, Heavy-Duty Pitched Axle, Made-To-Order Boondock Fenders, Solar Package and a Yakima Roof Rack.
