All-New Ford Ranger to Have Best-inClass Payload, Gas Engine Torque and Towing Capability As the all-new 2019 Ford Ranger nears production, Ford has announced that the mid-size pickup will deliver best-in-class payload, gas torque and towing capability. The engine will be paired to a class-exclusive 10-speed transmission which will greatly increase efficiency and provides a unique combination of power and capability. The Ranger is anchored by a high-strength steel frame and robust solid rear axle with Hotchkiss suspension, and can tow 7,500 lbs. when equipped with the tow package and a trailer brake controller. The much-anticipated new truck is set to begin production later this year at Ford’s Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan.

he 12th annual Canadian Truck King Challenge took place in the cold and rain of early October. Frankly, T that’s the norm for our event. And while it makes for nasty driving, I always remind our judges that we are simply testing in the same conditions that Canadian truck owners encounter every day. Dealing with our cli-
mate is just one reason that we pride ourselves on doing “real-world testing. The other truth is that our judges are life-long truck owners who come from all parts of the country where their regional experiences add to the depth of their opinions on the new iron we have a chance to test.
This year, five AJAC judges drove the new 1500-series pickup trucks around our Head River loop empty and then all over again with 1,000 lb of payload loaded in the beds. Finally, each truck towed a flatbed trailer, complete with concrete weights giving each a total tare weight of 7,000 lb. This ritual of back-to-back driving over the same 20-km test loop is what makes the Truck King Challenge unique. This routine gives each judge a chance to “feel” the differences in each truck as they drive over the same course – again and again. Over two very long days, we managed to drive over 2,000 km on this course. The trucks we had a chance to test this year were substantially new – with the exception of the Toyota and Nissan. However, the 2019 Chevy Silverado and the 2019 GMC Sierra both brought generational updates to our event, as did the 2019 Ram 1500. The Ford F-150 was unique in that it was the only diesel powered truck to compete – and the fact that this was the first time we had a chance to test this newest member of the Power Stroke family – the 3.0L V6 turbo-diesel. Below are the trucks that attended our IronWood test facility in the Kawartha Lakes region of Ontario this year.

So, what are the judges looking for while driving these loops over and over again? As you’ll see below, it’s an extensive list that takes all the build, tech, handling and comfort aspects of each truck into consideration. Each judge awards a score using a “ten-scale” for each category. These are then averaged over the completed score sheets – one
from each judge on each truck. It’s these averaged scores that are then converted to a percentage, so we can assign an “out of one hundred score.” See the example below. Also note that these scores are subjective. Each judge is familiar with the trucks they are driving in addition to having gone through the technical data and background that each manufacturer provides as part of its entry package. Still, what results is opinion. That’s why each of our judges is a member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). They make a living writing about trucks, most of them for decades. In fact, this year, our five judges, combined, can boast of over 110 years of experience in the field of automotive evaluation – and trucks in particular.

BILL & JOHN W.'S 1958 Chevy Cameo
A History all its own. In 2014, brothers John and Bill W. bought Bob C’s 1958 Cameo after being in Bob’s family for 54 years. Bob inherited it from his Dad who bought it when its owner beat him in a drag race in Kansas City, MO. Sometimes, a truck’s history is as straight as a drag strip. Other times, it’s as curvy as a scenic byway. Either way, we want to keep them going for miles and years to come. Read Bill & John’s story and share your own at LMCTruckLife.com

ROAD TEST: FORD F-150 DIESEL
Diesel Variant We got some more seat time in the 2018 Ford F-150 Diesel during AJAC’s TestFest
Story and photos by Benjamin Yong
R
emember all the “military-grade aluminum” advertisements flooding various forms of media when the 13th generation Ford F-150 initially launched? That was only four years ago, and now Canada’s favourite truck is making the news again by introducing the long awaited diesel variant. Here are the main points: the pickup is packing an all-new Power Stroke turbocharged diesel rated at 7.84 L/100 km fuel consumption; peak torque is delivered at a low 1,750 rpm; maximum towing and payload capacities are 11,400 and 2,020 pounds, respectively. “For every truck owner who wants strong fuel economy while they tow and haul, we offer a new 3.0-litre Power Stroke V6 engine that dreams are made of,” says Dave Filipe, Ford global powertrain engineering vice-president, in a news release. “The more you tow and the longer you haul, the more you’ll appreciate its class-leading towing and payload capacity and how efficient it is at the pump.” Sharing powertrain technology with the capable F-Series Super Duty, the mill generates 250 horsepower and, more importantly, the 440 lb-ft of torque I hinted at is right there on tap almost immediately when you put your foot on the throttle. An example of innovative tech is how engineers provided a solution to extreme heat and high altitude environments. This F-150 utilizes a mechanical motor-driven fan — as opposed to electric units competing models tend to favour — and dual radiator shutters to move air quickly and in large quantities to cool the radiator and feed the intercooler. That means even in harsh conditions, neither passing nor hauling is compromised. When driving and towing around town, the computer dials back fan output via a viscous coupler and shuts down the shutters to improve 18 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2018
aerodynamics and performance. I should mention the latter activity has been made much easier thanks to an available 360-degree birds-eye-view camera system aiding in hooking up a hitch and parking.

The diesel gets the same 10-speed automatic transmission gracing the rest of the lineup since 2017, which shifts smoothly and unobtrusively rather than hunting for the correct gear all the time, as one might suspect. In fact, the tranny is capable of choosing the ideal gear for whatever the job requires in a nonsequential manner. Auto start-stop is also standard. What I discovered after spending some time with the truck, in 4X4 SuperCrew Lariat trim, is that it pleasantly functions nicely as a daily driver and not just as a pure workhorse. This provides a perfect segue into talking about the interior and on-board driver assistance features. Infotainment is handled by Ford’s optional intuitive SYNC 3 hardware and software, offering easy-to-read menus and smartphone-like swipe and pinch-to-zoom inputs — Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both supported. Alternatively, activate voice control to perform most commands so the gloves can stay on. I find the built-in navigation one of the simpler ones to use in the industry, from setting custom route preferences to punching an entire address into a single field rather than having to jump from “street” to “city” etc.
I thankfully didn’t encounter a situation for pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection to kick in, but if an accident was deemed imminent, the truck could apply the brakes on its own. Blind spot warning can take into account a trailer up to 33 feet to alert drivers to approaching objects out of viewing range. And should you accidentally drift between the road markers, lane-keep assist can temporarily take over the wheel to help things get re-centred. My tester had the FX4 off-road package added, bundling an electronic-locking rear axle, hill descent control, beefier front shocks,
Download the FordPass app on your mobile device and the ability to lock or unlock the vehicle, check fuel and oil levels as well as tire pressure readings is a few taps away. Fire up the truck remotely from inside the house on a cold winter’s day, or schedule it to start in the morning before heading out. To further help save time, connect directly to the dealership through the app and schedule an appointment, look up store hours and view maintenance schedules, service history and recalls. There’s a whole slew of semi-autonomous wizardry customers may add on, a few of which are segment firsts. Adaptive cruise control makes highway runs a walk in the park, taking advantage of integrated radar and cameras to monitor traffic ahead allowing the F-150 to always maintain a set distance.
undercarriage skid plates and special badging, perfect for taking on a purpose-built dirt course containing ruts, changing elevation and mud. TECH F
ender Flares are a great complement to any truck with a lift kit or a larger tire-and-wheel package, and given that our 2018 Ford F-150 recently got both, they seemed like a logical next step. Bushwacker has long been synonymous with fender flares, and produces many different styles which allow them to easily integrate into almost any truck. We decided to reach out and luckily enough for us, Bushwacker was more than happy to provide us with a full set of Pocket Style Fender Flares. The Pocket Style flares are a Bushwacker original and give you the look of bolt-on flares without actually having to drill into your truck’s sheet metal, and are able to be mounted right out of the box. Although colour-matching options are available, we decided to go with the matte black finish, as we thought it would work perfectly with our other black accents including wheels and sidebars. Once we received the flares, we began the installation process which was as easy as advertised. Big thanks again to Bushwacker for providing us with the flares and to the guys who helped us out with the installation.
1. First step is to install all of the bolts in each pocket hole on all four of the fender flares. Tighten using a ½-in. wrench for the nut and the supplied Torx Bit for the bolt.
3. Next, once the five factory screws are removed from the fender, hold the flare to the truck and mark one hole location with a grease pencil. Wrap a foam tab around the wheel well, centering it over the mark made. Install one of the supplied clips over the tab.
2. Once all of the bolts are secure, peel 2-3-in. of the red vinyl backing away from the edge trim. Apply the adhesive side to the inner side of the flare and affix the edge trim to the top edge of the flare. Press the edge trim into place along the top edge of the flare, pulling the red vinyl backing free. Trim flush with the ends of the flare.
34 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2018
4. Attach three U-clips to the inner bracket and line up the holes in the inner piece with the three uppermost factory holes. Reinstall the factory screws through the inner piece.
5. Position the flare on the fender, pressing inward and lining up the flare mounting holes with the mounting clips on the inner piece. Install three screws through the flare and into the clips on the inner piece, but do not yet tighten.
6. While still holding the flare, re-install remaining factory screws. Tighten all screws. 7. With one side completed, repeat the process on the other side and move on to the rear.
8. Remove factory fastener from rear of wheelwell.
9. Hold flare to vehicle and mark the five hole locations. Once again wrap the foam tabs over the upper four marks made while placing the Mylar Tab at the mark made on the lower front of the wheel well. Install regular clips on the four upper locations and an S-clip over the Mylar tab.
10. Hold the flare to the vehicle and start the screws through the mounting holes in the flare. Tighten all screws, repeat on the other side and we are good to go.
The finished product. Big thanks again to Bushwacker for supplying us with the flares.

ROAD TEST: 2019 RAM 1500 REBEL
Bold Design Story and photos by Jordan Allan, additional photos courtesy of FCA Canada
the wheel of any model of the new Ram, I was excited to see how it looked and performed.
T
As I was a big fan of the overall look of the Ram’s fourth generation, this new version definitely took some getting used to, but I think I’m starting to come around, something that was definitely aided by the new version of the Rebel. I’ll admit that I’ve never been a huge fan of the big RAM-stamped grille but will agree that it definitely suits this model which is meant to be bigger and bolder than the rest. The rear of the truck looks great and the Rebel-only 18-in. aluminum wheels wrapped in 33-in. Goodyear All-Terrain tires further add to its off-road presence.
he 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel is perhaps the most distinctive model in the redesigned pickup’s lineup, boldly featuring a large vented hood, blacked-out fender-flares and an overall off-road-oriented appearance that really helps it stand out from the rest of its Ram brethren. First introduced back in 2015 during the Ram’s fourth-generation, the Rebel was an immediate success and not long after release, seeing one on the road became a daily occurrence, and for good reason. Although not a true Ford Raptor-fighter, the Rebel features not only upgrades to its appearance, but also to its capability with a 1-in. suspension lift, 3.92 rear axle ratio, skid plates, and 33-in. all-terrain tires. Being that this was my first opportunity to spend some time behind
The bold design theme continues inside, as the Rebel takes the Ram’s very luxurious, functional interior and adds distinctive red trim throughout including on the steering wheel, door panels and centre console surround. The seats come in a standard red-and-black cloth two-tone design that features a tire tread pattern on the backs and bottoms, which will definitely never let you forget that this isn’t just a normal Ram. The 5.0-in. Uconnect touchscreen comes standard, while our model featured the 8.4-in. unit which is still short of the iPad-like 12-in. screen offered on other models in the Ram lineup. All-in-all, the Rebel’s interior is easy to get used to and features some great storage space, but I still have a hard time wrapping my head around the dial shifter which seems to sit dangerously close to the volume knob. The new Rebel is now offered in a quad-cab configuration with steel coil springs; however, our test model was much like the previous version that featured controllable air springs and a crew cab configuration. The always great 5.7L Hemi V8 sat under the hood, now producing 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque and a sound that distin-
38 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2018
As I previously stated, this was my first opportunity to drive one of the 2019 Rams and I wondered if the off-road ability of the Rebel might hinder the overall on-road performance, but as I quickly found out, it didn’t. Aside from a bit of noise from the knobby tires, the truck performed exactly like I hoped it would. The electronically assisted steering allows the truck to feel extremely light even in tight, low-speed situations, while the air ride suspension system provided what has to be the smoothest ride I’ve ever experienced in a pickup truck. The Hemi V8 provides tons of pickup and passing power and is still able to break the rear end loose with a sudden jolt of the throttle which is great if you like to keep things interesting. All-in-all, the on-road experience in the Rebel, and likely all new Rams, is truly an enjoyable one.
guishes it from the rest, and is paired to a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission.
As I said, it isn’t really fair to directly compare the Rebel to the Raptor, but it’s inevitable that it will happen given that they do share the same overall ideology albeit with very different approaches taken. The Raptor is a truly unique, off-road capable monster and is definitely priced as such, while the Rebel feels more like the truck it was derived from and thus, is likely better suited to
One of the big things that ups the Rebel’s off-road prowess and sets it apart from the rest of the Ram lineup, is the addition of Bilstein monotube dampers which, along with the air springs, provide the Rebel with 10.8-in. of ground clearance in its highest setting. This will allow you to tackle some pretty rough terrain with ease while still providing a great on-road ride which, let’s be honest, is where a truck like this will inevitably spend most of its time. Although I didn’t have the chance (or courage) to take the Rebel in any serious off-road situations during my time with it, I did have a chance to check out some very rough gravel roads and was amazed at how the truck easily handled it. If I were to find myself in some more challenging terrain, the transfer case’s 2.64:1 low-range gearing and the electronically locking rear differential would certainly be able to handle almost anything I could throw at it. As I mentioned, the Ram Rebel is more like a Toyota Tundra TRD Pro than it is a Ford F-150 Raptor, but is still truly one of the most off-road capable pickups to ever roll off the factory line.
everyday use and comes in at a more manageable price point. Our test model came in at just over $70,000 which is probably on the high-end in terms of half-ton pickups, but when you consider just how versatile the Rebel is, it makes it the price much easier to justify.

Toyota Showcases Full-Size Pizza-Making Truck with the Tundra Pie Pro Down at Toyota’s booth towards the back of the Centre Hall, a oneof-a-kind, zero-emission, full-size pizza making pickup truck was on display and dubbed the Tundra Pie Pro. The truck was built at the Toyota Motorsports Technical Centre and included cooperation from Pizza Hut and Nachi Robotic Systems. The truck started out as a Tundra SR5 that was torn down to a rolling chassis and then built back from the ground up. The gasoline powertrain was also removed and replaced with a hydrogen fuel-cell electric power unit which was adapted from the Toyota Mirai. The truck’s bed was converted into a virtual pizza factory on wheels with a refrigerator, two computer-guided articulating robotic arms and a portable, high-efficiency conveyor oven. All components are powered by the hydrogen fuel cell electric powertrain and the entire pizza making process takes between six and seven minutes.

3 Friends & A 1966 Isuzu Elf Story by Spencer Whitney, photos courtesy of Dustin Herbison, Jeff TeBrinke and Alex Lopes
T
hree friends and a 1966 Isuzu Elf quad-cab – an unlikely combination, and one that came about unexpectedly. While they are known today mostly for commercial vehicles and diesel engines, Isuzu once sold passenger cars all over North America – and even small trucks in Canada. A handful of original generation Elf models were sold in Canada from 1959 to 1966. It’s not clear how many were actually imported, but only five are known to survive today. In 2016, Dustin Herbison heard through a family friend that there was an interesting farm-find not too far from his Kelowna home that he might want to see. Indeed it was interesting – this four-door version (of what North America might call a sub-compact pickup truck) is an oddball, and possibly the only one left in the world. Dustin quickly recruited two friends as co-owners of this unusual project: Jeff TeBrinke, a Red Seal welder, and Alex Lopes, Red Seal mechanic. Dustin himself is a shop teacher. As far as commercial trucks go, the first-generation Elf is a fairly standard configuration. A 2.2L four-cylinder diesel engine mates to a four-speed column shift transmission. Power on this particular model is sent just to the rear wheels. In addition to the pickup, Isuzu also offered delivery vans, flatbeds, tankers, and even a passenger van version with windows. One of these vans was discovered in another field in B.C. (possibly even waiting its own turn to be restored by other intrepid enthusiasts!) We interviewed Dustin about the project and found out that restoring a mid-’60s Japanese truck is quite a challenge. Despite a few setbacks and total lack of restoration parts, this dream-team of auto enthusiasts had the skills and know-how to turn an almost-abandoned oddity into a showroom-perfect collectors’ item. Off-Road Plus: How did you end up with the Elf? Were you looking for something like it or did you just happen to discover the truck? 50 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2018
Dustin Herbison: I came across the Elf on a farm in Okanagan Falls. My Dad knew the owner of the farm and said I should take a look at this weird vehicle that was parked in their field. Once I saw it, I sent pictures to my two good friends who I grew up with. All three of us have always loved Japanese vehicles and when we found the Elf, we knew it deserved to be restored. We weren’t looking for anything at the time. It all just kind of happened. ORP: We’re told it’s likely the only quad-cab first-gen Elf in existence – and that you’ve got a $1,000 reward if someone can find even a photograph of another one! DH: Once we purchased Elf, we began researching as extensively as possible. There were hours and hours spent online, including many hours searching Japanese websites as well. We realized that we could not find a photo of a four-door whatsoever. All we had was an illustration from one of the original Isuzu brochures showing that the four-door was indeed an option. We managed to contact the White Lake Observatory in Penticton, where it spent most of its life. They found in their archives an original photo of the Elf being used as a work vehicle in the late ‘60s. This is the only other photo we’ve come across and it is a picture of our own vehicle. So, we decided to advertise on social media and to anyone who sees our truck that we will give them $1,000 cash for a picture of another four-door first generation Elf. Even if it is right-hand drive and from anywhere in the world, our reward is valid.

Also, the wheel cylinders are all bizarre sizes and in order to rebuild them we machined custom wheel cylinder pistons all around. Needless to say, this was an ordeal. The hardest and most frustrating part of the entire restoration was the fact that from the factory, they used an unheard-of fastener/thread pitch combination. The vehicle used hundreds of 5x1.0mm fasteners (many were brass) and we had to re-use all of them as we were
ORP: Did you already have an interest in Japanese vehicles when you took this project on? DH: Absolutely. We all grew up racing imports and building turbo cars and always had a soft spot for anything Japanese. One of the cars we built was a turbo 1988 Acura Integra sleeper - DOHC 1.8L engine swap, twin-intercooled, hidden 3-in. turbo-back exhaust. Nicknamed “The Bag.” ORP: How long did it take; how much do you think you’ve spent? DH: We didn’t spend as much as many people think, simply because we had the know-how to do the majority of the work. We found three original brochures for sale on a Japanese auction site and used
dedicated to maintaining its originality. All of the female threads and body parts used this thread pitch. Normally all 5mm fasteners have a 0.8mm thread pitch. We tried hard but couldn’t buy any screw, nuts, or bolts, or buy a tap & die for this. This made the removal of fasteners extraordinarily difficult and important that nothing broke. ORP: Were there any particular shops, brands, or people who helped you significantly with the restoration? DH: Mike at AA-1 Windshield and Glass was a major help. Dave at Outlaw Graphics in Keremeos, Brian Cullen from Kelowna Performance Collision and Gordon’s Upholstery were integral to the restoration. ORP: What are your plans now that it’s completed? We saw on Instagram that you found another (two-door) Elf in the Kootenays. Will you be restoring that one too? DH: No, the other truck is beyond repair in our opinions. We have been thoroughly enjoying our shared ownership in the vehicle. We recently got our collector plates. We just enjoy cruising it around and attending the odd car show. It is ALWAYS a hot topic of conversation anywhere it goes. We did the restoration entirely for ourselves, but it has been really cool that everyone who sees it absolutely loves it.
those to guide our restoration as we wanted it to be as original as possible - which it is, right down to the colour. We estimate there are at least 1,500 hours invested over a two-year period. We went really hard on it for two years. Money wise, we’d rather not say. ORP: What were the most challenging parts of the restoration? DH: Where do I start? Firstly, there is NOTHING aftermarket available for the body, suspension, interior, instrument cluster, windows, trim, bumpers, marker lights, etc. The front Isuzu crest had to be completely made as the old one was cracked and busted. We had to create a mold of the old one out of polyurethane and then pour a clear plastic resin into the mold and delicately paint it from the back side before inserting it back into its chrome housing. There were multiple attempts made and 40 hours spent before we were happy with the result. The steering wheel and dashboard grab handle were completely shrunken, deformed and cracked. Twenty-five hours were spent restoring these items, as there were no available replacements anywhere. 52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2018
Where many others would see impossibility, Dustin, Alex and Jeff saw potential. Restoring any vehicle in two years is no easy task – and it’s especially difficult if that vehicle is a truck that has no replacement parts and no aftermarket support. But with the skills they all use on a daily basis in their professional lives, these three friends were able to achieve the impossible and bring new life to a forgotten vehicle – possibly the last one in existence anywhere.

ud flaps may seem like just a small accessory for your vehicle, but they actually do provide much more protection than you would think. Trucks with bigger, beefier tires can often throw some large debris behind them, and without mud flaps, it will likely shoot up into your wheel well or damage the under side of your truck bed. Husky Liners sent us some interior products for our 2018 Ford F-150 project a few months back and were generous enough to include a

set of their Universal Mud Flaps, which will seriously come in handy now that we have installed a 4-in. lift and some big 35-in. mud-terrain tires. In addition to the protection, the mirrored finish anchor weight will go great with our current chrome bumpers. Installation of the flap was a breeze, and in no time we were back on the road with a better sense of protection then we had previously. Big thanks again to Tina and her team at Husky Liners for providing us with these great products.
2. The supplied self-drilling screws made it easier for us, as we did not actually have to measure out and drill into the fender beforehand.
