Ram Celebrating Ten-Year Anniversary of Becoming Stand-alone Brand

E

arly October marked the official ten-year anniversary of Ram Truck splitting from Dodge and becoming a stand-alone brand with a full lineup of trucks and commercial vehicles. “Since becoming a distinct brand ten years ago, Ram has had the benefit of being able to focus solely on trucks and commercial vehicles, allowing us to build the best vehicles possible for our customers,” said Reid Bigland, Head of Ram Brand. “We expect Ram’s momentum to continue and we feel optimistic that we’re making the right moves, at the right time, to attract buyers.” Ram Truck continues to add to its list of exclusive features such as reclining rear seats, active-level four-corner air suspension, mild-hybrid eTorque engine options, RamBox cargo management and an active air dam. Over the years, Ram has hit many milestones with the releases of some of these features or distinct models that would become the staples as we know them today. In 2010, Ram Heavy Duty trucks were offered for the first time as Crew Cab models while the Outdoorsman model joined the 1500 lineup as a truck designed for outdoor enthusiasts. 2011 was another big year as it saw the introduction of the luxurious Laramie Longhorn and the Chassis Cab model. 2012 saw the introduction of the Tradesman Heavy Duty model while 2013 was best known for the facelifted 1500 model with a new Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2019

grille and front fascia. 2014 saw the EcoDiesel V6 engine option introduced which was the first diesel offering in any half-ton pickup, while 2015 saw the addition of the off-road oriented Rebel model. 2016, 2017 and 2018 saw a few new special edition models added to the fold and this year in 2019, the Ram 1500 went through a complete redesign and introduced its fifth generation with a whole suite of new features and technologies. Ram looks to start its next decade just as strong as the first, as the all-new 2020 HD models look to lead the way after being introduced earlier this year.

Ram Truck recently announced its EnerGuide fuel economy ratings for the 2020 Ram 1500 powered by the new and improved 3.0L V6 EcoDiesel engine. 4x2 models of the EcoDiesel will be rated at 7.3L/100km highway and 10.5L/100km city, while the much more popular 4x4 models will achieve 8.0 L/100km highway and 11.1L/100 km city for 4x4 models. Although clearly efficient, the 2020 EcoDiesel-equipped Ram 1500s are not without power as they produce a segment-leading 480 lb-ft of torque and diesel towing capability of 5,697 kg (12,560 lbs.). In addition, the Ram leads all trucks in fuel range as, when paired with the available 125-litre tank, the Ram driving range exceeds 1,600 km. The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel is available now across all models and configurations including, for the first time, in the Ram Rebel.

Nissan Showcases Frontier Desert Runner and Accessorized 2020 TITAN at SEMA Show Nissan had another strong presence at the recent 2019 SEMA Show, showcasing the Nissan Frontier Desert Runner and fully accessorized 2020 Nissan Titan for the first time. Desert Runner is one of five available Frontier models, but the one showcased at SEMA was much different than that 4x2, off-road style package. MA Motorsports out of Glen Arm, Maryland worked in tandem with Nissan Motorsports to create a full-blown race truck. The conversion began under the hood with the replacement of the factory 4.0L V6 with a 5.6L Endurance V8 from a full-size Nissan Titan. The engine underwent a complete race-spec rebuild and now boasts 600-plus horsepower and 700 lb-ft of torque and is paired to a Nissan 6-speed manual transmission. The suspension is, of course, heavily modified and includes a BTF Fabrication long travel front suspension kit, King Racing Triple Bypass front shocks and coil-overs, rear King Racing Triple Bypass shocks and Giant Motorsports Link Killer rear leaf springs. The 37-in. BFGoodrich Baja T/A tires surround the Fifteen52 TurboMac HD wheels and to top it all off, MA Motorsports installed Fiberworx Pre Runner fenders and fabricated new front and rear bumpers. In addition to the Frontier build, Nissan utilized the SEMA Show to showcase one of its new, 2020 Titan trucks with a full suite of Genuine Nissan Accessories including Rugged Step Boards, Sliding Bed Extender, Illuminated Kick Plates and a Sport Bar with off-road lights and light covers.

Vehicle Dynamics was handed the Best New Off-Road/4-Wheel Drive Product award with its Jeep Gladiator 2.5-in. suspension system while Dana and HaulGauge/Garage Smart were runner up in that category. Yokohama dominated the Best New Tire and Related Product category with its Geolandar X-AT tire winning and the Geolandar X-CV and Advan Apex tires being named runners up. Finally, in the Best New Van/Pickup/Sport-Utility Product, RSI SmartCap’s SmartCap EVO took home top prize while Bestop’s Gladiator Bedside Storage Lockboxes and BuiltRight Industries’ Gladiator Bedside Rack Storage System were named runners up.

he Canadian Truck King Challenge focused on testing the mid-size truck segment this year. As to the why? Well, we look at what’s happening in the truck world and test what Canadian truck buyers are most interested in as each model year rolls out. And, right now, the mid-size segment is exploding. Early this year, we sent invitations to every manufacturer asking them to provide us with the relevant trucks; including the off-road versions, a market that we knew would be of interest to Canadian buyers. So, whether it’s the FX4, the TRD Pro, Rubicon, PRO-4X or ZR2 Bison – mid-size owns the off-road market.

The builders all know that we’ve been pitting new pickups head to head for 14 years now – and some of them responded enthusiastically to this year’s mid-size Challenge. However, some turned down our invitation. Each had their reasons. What were they? Doesn’t matter really – their absence speaks for them. Here, are the builders who did decide it was important to compete – and what they brought to the Challenge. Toyota, with the oldest continuously built mid-size, the Tacoma, gave us two trucks. One for the street, the other decidedly off-road capable.

2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport ENGINE: Direct Injection 3.5L DOHC V6 w/VVT-i MECHANICAL: Part-Time Selectable 4WD w/2-Speed Electronically Controlled Transfer Case, Automatic Limited-Slip Differential, Locking rear differential TRANSMISSION: 6-speed manual SUSPENSION: Rear Leaf Spring Suspension, Sport Tuned Bilstein Shock Absorbers BRAKES: Front Ventilated Disc Brakes, Rear Drum Brakes WHEELS: 17-in. Alloy Wheels TIRES: P265/65R17 Total MSRP: $46,696.40 General Motors chose to send us just one truck – their newest and most capable mid-size off-roader – the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison.

2020 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro ENGINE: Direct Injection 3.5L DOHC V6 w/VVT-I MECHANICAL Locking rear differential, Part-Time Selectable 4WD w/2-Speed Electronically Controlled Transfer Case, Automatic Limited-Slip Differential (Auto LSD), Crawl Control + Multi-Terrain Select TRANSMISSION: 6-speed automatic SUSPENSION: Fox Shock Absorbers BRAKES: Front Ventilated Disc Brakes, Rear Drum WHEELS: 16-in. 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon ENGINE: 3.6L Pentastar VVT V6 w/Stop-Start MECHANICAL: 4:1 Rock–Trac heavy–duty part–time 4x4 system, 4.10 rear axle ratio, Fuel tank skid plate, Transfer case skid plate, Heavy-gauge rock protection, sill rails, Torx tool kit, Power tailgate lock, Heavy–duty engine cooling, Class IV hitch receiver, Trailer hitch zoom, 240–amp alternator TRANSMISSION: 8-speed Automatic SUSPENSION: Front FOX performance shocks, Rear FOX performance shocks, Tru–Lok front and rear axles, Dana 44 M210 wide front axle, Dana 44 M220 wide rear axle, Electronic sway–bar disconnect system, BRAKES: 4-wheel ABS Discs WHEELS: 17-inch aluminum Total MSRP: $68,050.00

FCA’s Jeep brand gave us two versions of its all-new Gladiator pickup truck. Applying the same trim levels that are available on the Jeep Wrangler SUV, the new pickups were equipped as an Overland edition and the most aggressive off-roader – the Rubicon. The Challenge is all about “Real World” testing; in other words, we use these trucks the way you, the consumer, would. As we do each year, we enlisted the aid of five experienced Judges to drive the trucks back-to-back on our test loop. This year, with the midsize truck capacities in mind, we drove the Head River loop empty

2020 Jeep Gladiator Overland ENGINE: 3.6L Pentastar VVT V6 w/Stop-Start MECHANICAL: Heavy–duty engine cooling, Fuel tank skid plate, Transfer case skid plate, 2.72:1 Command–Trac part–time 4x4 system, Torx tool kit, 3.73 rear axle ratio, Selec–Speed control, Transmission skid plate, Tip start, Trac–Lok anti–spin differential rear axle TRANSMISSION: 8-speed Automatic Transmission SUSPENSION: five-link coil suspension design, Dana M210 front axle Dana M220 rear axle BRAKES: 4-wheel ABS Discs WHEELS: 17-inch aluminum TIRES: 33-in. off-road tires Total MSRP: $63,265.00 16 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2019

and then we did it all over again with 500 lb of payload in the beds. Finally, each truck towed a flatbed trailer, loaded with 2,000 lb of concrete, giving each trailer a gross weight of 4,000 lb. This ritual of back-to-back driving over the same 20-km test loop is what makes the Truck King Challenge unique. This routine gives each judge a chance to “feel” the differences in each truck as they drive over the same course – again and again. Over two very long days, we manage to collectively drive over 2,000 km around this course.

lectors to measure fuel consumption during all aspects of our testing. What we offer is unique. Sure, we’ll tell you how the trucks performed while running empty, but we also do that analysis while the trucks are loaded with payload and while towing. Watch for the release of the 2020 Canadian Truck King Challenge Fuel Study in the coming weeks. A word about our scoring. The final numbers are averaged from among all the scores submitted by the five judges. They are then converted to a percentage so we can offer a final score out of a possible 100. Thanks to all who cared enough about their customers to participate. We are grateful for your support in our quest to bring meaningful “Real World” test results to Canadian truck buyers. There is always an off-road element to the Challenge, but this year, because of the unique off-road trucks we had a chance to test, we spent significantly more time in the snow, mud and water. Speaking of snow, we were dumped on with the largest single-day snowfall (for Nov 11th) in 70 years – at least that’s what Environment Canada said. As I’ve said before, it’s the Truck King Curse – we always get rained on during testing, but snow was unique. Though, it did make for some great off-roading video. That footage will be coming to our YouTube channel soon. Also, of interest to consumers, each year is our Fuel Study. Supported by Natural Resources Canada, we use electronic data col-

OFF-ROAD TEST: RAM REBEL & POWER WAGON

Key Players

The Rebel and Power Wagon are a huge part of Ram’s success Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of FCA Canada

R

am brand pickups have been gaining market share for years now, and part of that sales success can be attributed to two key players among the Ram models – the Rebel and the Power Wagon. Recently I was driving both, in the mountains of British Columbia, to see what’s new with these two nameplates, one relatively new, while the other can be considered the grand-daddy of off-road trucks. The Rebel was launched in 2015; based on the Ram 1500, it was more of a trim/styling package than a mechanically ungraded truck,

at first. That fact, though, didn’t stop it from becoming a popular sales choice. Since then, Ram has rewarded Rebel buyers with a growing list of real off-road features – to where now, the 2019 Rebel I just drove can legitimately be called an off-roader. This new Ram Rebel features aggressive 32-inch all-terrain tires, a one-inch factory lift, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential (standard), multi-link rear coil spring suspension, full skid plate protection and integrated tow hooks. The two-speed 4WD transfer case features shift-on-the-fly controls and also works with a new Hill Descent Control system. Rebel can be powered by either the base 5.7L V8 Hemi engine (395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque) or the optional 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 (newly redesigned; now making 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque). Driving the Rebel up a mountain on a soggy B.C. day reminded me that I have always liked what the Ram design team has done with Rebel. Though it’s a Ram 1500 at heart, the colour schemes and design cues have always set it apart in a significant way. Just look at the interior theme for example, where aggressive tire tread patterns crisscross the seats. However, while working the rocky switchbacks on Grouse Mountain, I also realized that its updated rough terrain capabilities now let me love it for being a decent off-roader too. My next ride after the lunch stop (at 6,000 feet of elevation), was the Ram Power Wagon. This iconic truck got its start doing military service and then as a civilian version, introduced in 1946. With a new

cab and a purpose-built 8-foot cargo box, it rode on a 126-inch wheelbase chassis and featured a 230 cubic-inch flathead sixcylinder engine, a two-speed transfer case, a four-speed transmission and had a power take off (PTO). It was produced (with very little change) till 1968, when new light-duty truck safety regulations in the United States made it obsolete, though trucks were built for export well into the 1970s. The 2019 truck I was driving, though (built on the Ram 2500 chassis), harks back to its re-introduction in 2005 at Chrysler’s Chelsea proving grounds in Michigan. There, an earthen presentation podium exploded revealing a new Dodge Ram Power Wagon. That was the rebirth of the modern Power Wagon, a truck that remains mostly unchanged; mainly because its purpose is also unchanged – conquering the unpaved world. The key features of this 2019 Power Wagon are front and rear electronic lockers, a swaybar disconnect system, integrated 12,000-lb Warn winch system, 33-inch off-road tires, full underbody armour, and up to 26-inches of individual wheel travel deflection. Powering this beast is the 6.4L Hemi V8 engine that, along with the 8-speed automatic transmission, makes 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque. Crawling back down the mountain, I was reminded of two things. One – the Power Wagon will go almost anywhere, just not fast. Its suspension is set to clamber over obstacles at a crawl – not at speed. Two – because of # One, it remains a favourite of Fire/Police/Forestry and Search & Rescue outfits. To that end, its also good to know that the Power Wagon version of the Ram

2500 can be ordered with the lowest of the trim packages. That would be “Tradesman,” so, unlike with some other off-roader models, purchasers are not pushed into top-level trim packages simply because they want the off-road features. So, while it’s fun driving trucks like these off-road, I had a nagging question. Why had Ram set up this program?

Neither of these trucks was significantly new – so, I asked around. Most of the answers I got referred to the future of the Ram off-road brand. So, I started thinking about what was not at this program, but has now been officially confirmed - the Ram Rebel TRX, which will be built for the 2020 model year. My thought after learning this was that the B.C. mountain climb then was just an appetizer to warm us up for this significant new truck coming soon enough. DEC/JAN 2019 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 29

This is an exciting development, as this addition will now give Ram a trio of off-road trucks that will cover the desert-racer market; the rock-climbing segment and offer a general mud-slinger truck. If you haven’t heard of the TRX, well, it’s worth knowing as much as you can right now; this one will be big. First shown as a concept at the Texas State Fair in September of 2016, it really caused a stir; then nothing. Frankly many (including me) were beginning to wonder if it would actually get built. So, now I say, better late than never. Here is what we can expect next year. Based on the Ram 1500, this Rebel TRX will be a fully engineered and designed pickup meant for extreme off-roading at speed. It will feature a 575-hp 6.2L Hemi V8 coupled with a TorqueFlite eightspeed automatic transmission. Its front and rear axles are designed for severe duty, and the truck will sport 13-inches of wheel travel at all four corners. Using bypass performance shocks at the front and rear, the TRX should have impressive damping ability.

30 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2019

The truck body will be six-inches wider than a standard Ram 1500, mainly to accommodate the large fender wells that house the aggressive 37-inch tires. They are all bead locked and the bed will carry two spare tires. The 4WD system is sourced through BorgWarner and employs different computer-controlled modes such as Normal, Wet/Snow, Off-road and Baja. The front axle uses an open differential, while the rear has a selectable locker that works at any speed. The look of the TRX is macho-aggressive, an overall impression that is enhanced by the specially tuned exhaust note that blasts out of the short 5-inch pipes just ahead of the rear wheels. Its design will borrow from both the Rebel and the Power Wagon – good company to be in. Stopping the truck is a Baer six-piston monobloc caliper mounted on 15-inch rotors. Ram says this TRX will easily be a 160-km/h offroad machine that pickup fans will appreciate. I know I’m looking forward to it.

FEATURE: LONG-TERM TESTER PT.3

Professional Grade

The conclusion to our long term test of the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of GMC Canada

G

M has been working towards a body style separation from the Silverado for over a decade now. Today, looking at a GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado side-by-side, you’ll see they have accomplished this goal. The 2019 GMC grille is upright and dominant with a proportional chrome three-bar pattern (Denali, though, continues to get the popular “cheese grater” look). The truck is squared up and slab-sided; it hulks over its wheel arches. It’s a look that either attracts or repels, it certainly does not leave you without an opinion. Over the four months of our test, we drove almost 15,000 km. We had no mechanical issues – that’s the big one. We also towed with the truck; many times, with multiple trailers and varying weights, as well as filling it with people and payload. After 16 weeks, we can report that the insights we gained came from really using the truck and all its features. Over those accumulated kilometres, many features of the Sierra asserted themselves. Here are the ten things that most impressed us. 1. The 6.2L V8 coupled to the new 10-speed automatic transmission worked so well. It produced 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. This large displacement V8 did not disappoint in the power department – a statement that was equally true while towing. Still, power aside, this big block could potentially be expensive to fuel. GM considered that, too, and worked to temper fuel consumption where possible – while maintaining the power. The answer was a powertrain combination that included the DFM (Displacement Fuel Management) system, which controls the number of cylinders firing at any given time 34 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2019

(based on power demand). This feature is new for 2019 and offers 17 cylinder activation combinations, a significant update from the older AFM (Active Fuel Management) version that ran the engine in either 8- or 4-cylinder mode only. DFM saves fuel. The 10-speed transmission is also new and works seamlessly with the DFM system. In fact, both of these complex bits of engineering worked perfectly during our test period – always in the background – never bumping, grinding or being obvious. This gearing is also intended to better manage the available power and also save fuel by added long hi-speed gears, keeping rpms on the highway low. So, that’s the tech explanation and theory; but does it work? I went through this year’s (and previous years) Truck King Challenge fuel studies for an answer to that question. As we produce a fuel study each year for Natural Resources Canada, we had several years of hard data to look at.

The figures quoted here are the average consumption rates over two days of onroad testing which included empty runs, driving the equal distance with 1,500 lb of payload and finally towing 7,000-lb trailers over the same distance again. The fuel consumption data was collected by electronic data recorders and verified by a hired third party. The 6.2L V8 made its first appearance in 2014. That year it was coupled to a six-speed transmission and used the old AFM system. Its average fuel consumption during Truck King testing that year was 15.7L/100 km. Fast forward to 2019 and the 6.2L V8 now pushes power through a new 10-speed transmission and features the updated DFM system. Its average fuel consumption (tested in October, 2018) dropped to 14.0L100 km. If I calculate the effect of that difference over just the 15,000 km of our test, we saved 277 L of fuel – all because of the updated transmission and change to the DFM system - even though the base engines were the same in both years of the test. 2.The business end of the truck has gotten extra attention from GMC and we liked all the updates. Among these is the MultiPro tailgate that features six unique functions. Its split design folds half the gate down to create a second tier for loading or to be used as a backstop for long cargo. If the tailgate itself is down the split function creates an extra wide step. To the left is a bar which swings up to create a hand support – frankly, with how high truck beds have become, this is not only a good idea but a necessity. With the step deployed, you’re also able to stand closer to the bed – easing back strain while loading. This step will support 375 lb. I found that the tailgate also functioned as a workstation. The bed also has a 110V

outlet near the tailgate. There are new tie-down points and LED bed lights as well. The sidewalls are also redesigned, making the bed wider by almost 7 inches. The MultiPro is standard equipment on Denali and SLT trucks. Another significant advancement is an available industry-first carbon-fibre cargo box. Our early-build Sierra did not have this carbonfibre box; however, the standard spray-on bed liner was tough and wear-resistant throughout our test. 3. Adaptive Ride Control (offered on Denali). This is a new system, one that you won’t notice initially – but over time, you feel the ride difference as you travel over varied surfaces at different speeds. This electronic feature monitors road and driver inputs, in real time, and then it reacts (in milliseconds) adjusting shock damping on-the-fly for the smoothest ride.

DEC/JAN 2019 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 35

7. I own seven trailers – meaning I tow a lot. On the GMC, I had the ProGrade Advanced Trailering Package (standard). Among its features is the Hitch Guidance with Hitch View. This in-cab image with on-screen guidelines let me hook up to my trailer without the help of a spotter (or jumping in and out of the truck a dozen times). 8. GM was the first to offer in-vehicle Wi-Fi connectivity. So, while this is not a new feature, the 4G LTE hotspot (a one-month/3GB data trial is standard) found in Sierra is still one of the best and easiest to use. 9. Standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control is an established system. It also includes rollover mitigation technology and, most importantly, trailer sway control and hill-start assist – both things I benefited from while towing. 10. The Sierra also offers a new Traction Select System. When I picked up the test truck, there was still snow on the ground, so I had 4. GM is also offering a Multi-Colour Head-Up Display that projects vehicle info onto the windshield in a 3 x 7-inch display box. This innovation is as much about safety as it is about seeing driving data (like speed, cruise, Nav instructions, etc.) By looking through the projection, you never take your eyes off the road, while absorbing the info you need. I expect this trend to spread, because it fights the distraction that is forever growing with the increasing number of in-cab controls that take your attention away from driving. 5. Active safety features are a necessity as trucks continue to grow. On the Sierra we had an HD Rear-Vision Camera along with Surround Vision – multiple camera views that let you see every corner of the truck. It also had a Lane Change Alert and a Blind Zone Alert; these are always active and add another layer of protection. After all, we’ve all accidentally cut someone off while changing lanes. 6. Other safety features – which I also like to call driver assist features – continue to grow as the sophistication of electronic sensors increases. The Sierra had a Driver Alert Package (optional) that included Forward Collision Alert, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Low Speed Forward Automatic Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, IntelliBeam automatic headlamp control, Following Distance Indicator and Safety Alert Seat. After 15,000 km of road travel, I experienced each one of these systems working. That said, sometimes they simply backed up the action that I (the driver) was already doing or aware of. But, sometimes, they did save me during a moment of distraction. It happens.

36 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2019

a chance to choose various drive modes over the length of my test. These different drive modes are electronically tailored for different terrain and weather conditions. Once selected, the Sierra’s transmission shift points, throttle mapping and the StabiliTrak react to each situation automatically. A great feature that works automatically is the locking rear differential (standard) that reacts in milliseconds to slip situations. A Two-Speed AutoTrac Transfer Case is also standard on all 4WD models. GMC calls its trucks “Professional Grade;” after my 4-month test, I’ll add my own passing grade to that phrase.

FEATURE: BOLLINGER B2 ELECTRIC PICKUP

New Kind of Truck Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

W

ill your next pickup truck be electric? It’s a strong possibility as several companies are moving quickly to bring electric-powered pickups to market – including the major Detroit builders. I recently visited one of these companies in suburban Detroit to see just how far along its electric truck development has come. The company is Bollinger Motors, and yes, there is a Mr. Bollinger, a man who put up his own money to bring a new kind of pickup to market. According to the company website, Robert Bollinger spent his childhood drawing cars and dreaming of his own car company. He attended Carnegie Mellon and earned a degree in Industrial Design, and was planning to further his education at an automotive design grad school. Instead, he found himself in New York City, working his way up the advertising ladder, becoming a creative director. He then partnered with a friend growing a very lucrative hair care company. With the successful sale of that business, he moved to a farm in upstate New York. Once again, he starting dreaming of building his own car, but he decided he wanted a truck for farm use instead. With that use in mind, he started designing what he thought would be a 44 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2019

very practical pickup. Interestingly, his choice of electric power as the mode of propulsion wasn’t born of a rabid anti-fossil fuel attitude. Instead, he found early on that using off-the-shelf electric components was a cheaper and faster way of getting his truck to market. At Bollinger’s headquarters, a rolling B2 pickup chassis is on display; work continues but I can see it’s almost done. What I saw there was a truck design that can be described as the boiled down essence of practicality. Its square body is built

a steel shell; as weight is the enemy of any electric vehicle, the B2 features an all-aluminum body. It has four standard doors, seats four passengers and has a six-foot cargo bed.

for service, and its frame, suspension and drivetrain will haul people, payload and go just about anywhere. In fact, once you get past the whole electric thing, this appears to be one tough utility truck. Looking at the B2, I was struck with its box-like build, which to me is reminiscent of a Mercedes G-Wagon or old-school Land Rover Defender. Good company to be in. However, this is not

46 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2019

However, it has a few smart features that will add to that space including a lifting rear glass and a fold-flat mid-gate panel that opens up the bed to the interior. The rear passenger seats are also removable to create even more cargo room. Oh, but there is more. Because the hood does not cover a traditional engine, it lifts to reveal another storage space (a 14cu. ft, “frunk). This space also has a rear access door through the firewall which, when open, creates a 16-foot long pass-through right to the rear of the cargo bed. Inside, the IKEA-simple, clean design continues. Everything is flat or square. Controls are knobs and toggles, all well placed and easily used. Bollinger engineers seemed to find simple, yet elegant, solutions for all the accessory needs.

The feature that struck me was the window defroster – rather than using a larger in-dash vent selector and complicated powered duct diverter, the B2 employs a perforated cylinder that runs the length of the dashboard that spins by hand. If you need defrost – you turn the holes in the one-half of the cylinder upwards, towards the glass. Want it off – simply spin back, till it’s closed. Still, it’s not all low-tech. Above your head is a four-panel, removable, full glass roof. They have invested in some very eye-catching features.

What was hard to see on the floor model was the drivetrain. Most of the components are run through a raised tunnel that runs the length of the truck. In fact, looking under the truck revealed a clean surface that is virtually flat, which explains the extra ground clearance. For the B2, that is 15½ inches at the wheels (individual wheel travel is also 10-inches), because these electric drive components eliminate low-hanging axle supports and prop shafts. So, with that kind of clearance, you’d expect some decent off-road performance. It doesn’t hurt that the B2 has four-corner air suspension, less underside hardware and the ability to raise and lower itself. So, now consider that driving those wheels are two electric motors – one driving the front wheels, the other the rear set. Each electric motor has an output of 300 hp and 668 lb-ft of torque and spins at up to 15,000 rpm. The truck has a typical two-speed transfer case and 2/4WD selector. With that much power pushing through the wheels it should be a serious off-roader. So, while the default drive mode is a slip-n-grip all-wheel drive setup – on-road or off, both front and rear axles come with lockers. This elevates the truck to Jeep-like ability. In fact, I noted that the B2 is actively taking a page out of Jeep’s marketing book by offering an unbuttoned driving experience – its doors, windshield and glass roof panels are all removable. So, while its crawl ratio will be substantial, it’s no dog on the highway. Speed-wise, the truck

48 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2019

will be governed to a top speed of 160 km/h, but its ability to get up to speed is brisk – its 0-100 km/h time is said to be 4.5 seconds. Stopping the truck will be vented inboard disc brakes (11.75inches). They are also anti-lock. The tires I saw on the demo model were BF Goodrich KO2’s – aggressive and 33-inches tall; apparently these will be standard. Bollinger engineers then talked to me about the key concern anyone buying an electric truck will have. In a word – range. According to them, the B2 is equipped with a 120 KWH battery pack which will have an effective battery range of 320 km on a full charge. Once depleted, the truck will recharge at various rates depending on what kind of charger it’s plugged into. The more common one (Level 2) will utilize 220V power and restore the battery in 8 to 10 hours. If a Level 3 (called a DC Fast) charger is available, this time can be cut to around 2 hours.

Pricing? No, not yet. When is it available? No date is set; but the B2 is real and from what I’ve seen it will have a market. So, while I was not able to drive the prototype I was crawling through, Bollinger says that day is getting closer. Their stated

Here are the B2 specifications and capacities: Wheelbase: .................................................................. 139 in. Length: .......................................................................207.5 in. Width (no mirrors): ................................................... 77.2 in. Width (with mirrors): ............................................... 89.0 in. Height: .......................................................................... 72.7 in. Front Track: ................................................................ 66.2 in. Rear Track: ................................................................. 66.2 in. Approach Angle: ................................................ 52-degrees Break Over Angle: ............................................. 25-degrees Departure Angle: ............................................... 28-degrees Curb Weight: ..............................................................5,000 lb GVWR: .......................................................................10,001 lb

Bollinger says that the B2 will have a payload rating of 5,000 lb and a tow rating of 7,500 lb. Bollinger also says that they will submit the B2 for the required SAE J2807 load testing that will verify and certify its payload and towing capacities – just like the big boys.

goal is to have a full production-built unit ready for the 2021 model year. So, a B2 available for purchase a year from now? Maybe. The key piece to the rollout puzzle is finding the right facility to put the trucks together. That is what they are doing right now - actively searching for an established partner with an existing production facility to assemble the B2. I wish them luck. A variety of optional equipment is also planned for the B2 – such as a front-mounted winch and accommodation for standard snowplows. But the best one I saw was a tongue-in-cheek line item in the brochure. Ten 110V outlets come standard – after all, it IS an electric truck.

RV-ING: 2020 THOR VEGAS RUV

Right-Sized Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

T

hor is calling its smaller Class A an RUV – or, Recreational Utility Vehicle. I’m pretty sure its not intended to go off-road; so, its really just a cute marketing label. Still, its smaller dimensions do make it easier to manoeuvre in general – and that’s a bonus in tighter urban situations in particular. One customer comment I read on-line sums its size up nicely - “it has the roominess of a large Coach but drives like a smaller Coach.” This was my impression of the Vegas, too. The construction of the Vegas begins with a Ford E-Series Chassis. It’s powered by the long-serving 6.8L Triton V10 Engine which makes 305 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque; adequate for the weight of the coach. The transmission is a TorqShift 6-speed automatic with overdrive. So, I know that this E-series chassis is the basic setup for any number of Class C motor homes, yet the first thing I noticed is that the body that Thor puts on this chassis acts very differently on the road (versus the washy feel of most Class C’s). Overall, it is much tighter and more controlled on-road. It must have to do with the design and stance the body takes on the chassis (and the fact that total length is under 30-feet). Lightweight materials must help too, being that the key construction feature is a body-shell constructed as a welded tubular aluminum cage. The roof supports are aluminum too. The walls are also filled with block form insulation and the roof is a vacu-bond laminate covered with a one-piece TPO material. This RUV coach on this veteran E-series chassis simply feels good. Walking around it, I can see that this mini Class A still manages to offer decent storage. I noted that 50 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2019

these exterior storage compartments are made of a rotocast, solid plastic and the basement is lighted and features flush mount radius doors. Above, there is also a standard (20-ft) lateral power awning with integrated LED lighting. I also noted that both the slide-outs on the Vegas had “topper” awnings. I still like these, as they protect against accumulation of debris on the slides that can mess up the seals when closing. The windows are automotive style frameless – this gives it a smooth, clean look that goes hand-in-hand with the HD-Max exterior and graphics package. Entry to the coach is mid-ships, creating a natural separation between salon and kitchen. I headed up front first and noted that much like cars today, the cockpit of the Vegas features multiple driver assist and convenience features.

Starting with the touchscreen dash-mounted radio (SiriusXM Radio ready), it also broadcasts the backup monitor view and other integrated camera angles to assist the driver while backing up – or while changing lanes on road. An integrated Nav system is also available. This feature is one that I just wouldn’t do without anymore. As the size of the Vegas suggests, it will take more trips downtown than larger Class A’s, so it will help you to not get lost. Mirrors are remotely positioned and are heated as well; this is also where the side-view cameras are integrated. The reclining/swivelling Captain’s chairs make them part of the living space when parked, while on the road are comfortable (Driver’s seat is powered). Other assist features include cruise control, tilt steering, map light, privacy shade, cup holders, fog lights and a dash workstation with both 110V and 12V outlets. So, as I noted earlier, this RUV isn’t going off-road; but it can go off-grid. It features a standard Onan RV QG 4000 gas generator. Drawing off the main fuel tank, this powerplant will give you the option to boondock as long as you want – or till your water runs out, anyway. Just above your head (really nicely tucked away) is a convenience for your overnight guests (or to escape someone’s snoring!) A powered drop-down overhead bunk is stored there – right over the cockpit. It drops down with the press of a button – and disappears the same way next morning. It comes with a Cotton Cloud mattress and a secure bunk ladder. While working the bunk, I realized that one of the reasons the Vegas feels larger than it is, is its interior ceiling height – 82 in. or 6-ft 10-in. It’s airy, while the bright residential vinyl ceiling just adds to that impression. Turning to the salon area, I see it’s bookended with a leatherette Jack-Knife sofa (68-inches long and opens for sleeping) and what is called a “Dream” dinette in the slide-out across from it. This, too, folds down for sleeping and is also 68-inches long. Passenger seatbelts are found on both. If you spin the driver and passenger seats around, they too become part of this sitting (and viewing) area. The standard 40-inch flat-screen TV is hung right over the dinette, above the table on the wall. It’s visible from every seating position in the front and middle of the coach.

The rear master bedroom, however, gets its own 32-inch wallmounted TV suitable for viewing while in bed. The Vegas comes with a standard digital TV antenna with booster; however, it is also wired for cable and HD Satellite TV feeds. The kitchen space is modest; though it is well laid-out and has been designed to make use of the available space, with the main front-toback aisle running through it. A few of the space-saving design cues include a stove-top that has just two burners (with a glass cover) and an oven that’s also a microwave convection type. The stove and oven are built into the main

cupboards, nice lighting and side windows for a nice cross-breeze. Of note, this bed has a flip-up feature (the front (at the head) third folds upward) to create another seating area. I suppose some people don’t like watching TV while lying down. Other bedroom convenience features include a USB charging station, a 12V outlet for CPAP machines, bedside shelves and some storage. As for the bathroom - in keeping with today’s design trends, it’s large. The square corner shower, for instance, is 32 x32-inches with a curved rod and curtain. However, there is also an outside shower faucet – for hosing off the dog – or muddy kids. The sink is corner mounted (stainless steel) opposite the shower, thereby giving the foot-flush porcelain toilet a wide easy access. Good lighting and overhead skylight (and power vent) make for a nice bath space. The Thor Vegas is, in a word, right-sized. It fills a need in the market and I can see it appealing to younger families, older couples and some who want to downsize. The other attraction of this RUV is the joy of driving it. By that I mean that it’s easy and comfortable – but what I really enjoy is seeing the world through that condo-sized windshield. Watching the road rush by while you relax in the comfort and luxury offered by the Thor Vegas is frankly very satisfying.

slide-out, clearing the way (when open) to the larger counter top, sink, cupboard and drawers. There is also a flip-up counter extender on the aisle side of the counter which will be helpful during food prep. Ample overhead storage comes in the form of Euro-style cabinets with soft-close hidden hinges. A nice design touch is a pantry (or closet, if you choose) wall opening into the aisle separating the bedroom from the kitchen. Across the aisle is where the refrigerator lives, next to a hanging closet and a smaller broom closet. This rear bedroom houses the second Vegas slide-out. It holds the head of the Queen-size bed which, when pushed out, provides a 60 x 74-inch sleeping space. The slide-out features a headboard, 54 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2019
