We told you last issue about Truck Hero’s plans to auction off their custom build originally shown at the 2018 SEMA Show called the Ultimate Tailgate. Starting life as a 2019 Ford F-350 Lariat, the truck was able to fetch an incredible $275,000 USD at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. One hundred-percent of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Building Homes for Heroes Organization with representative Jim Rogers saying “Thank You for your amazing partnership! 2021 Ram Heavy Duty Now Offering 1,075 lb-ft. of Torque Volume 13, Issue No. 6

In addition to some other upgrades and enhancements, Ram has announced that its 2021 Heavy Duty full-size pickups will be available with up to 1,075 lb-ft. of torque from its available 6.7L High Output Turbo Diesel engine. Ram achieved this by working closely with Cummins to provide enhancements to the engine including higher boost limits through a variable geometry turbo, and flow rate increases through the fuel delivery system. This has allowed the 6.7L I6 to produce the additional 75 lb-ft. of torque while maintaining its efficiency

and durability. The rear portion of the truck’s frame, which includes fully boxed rails and the rear-axle structural crossmember, with provisions for a fifth-wheel and gooseneck hitch, has been upgraded for 2021 to accommodate the increased towing capacity. The optional fifthwheel and gooseneck hardware is fully integrated into the production box floor and includes fifth-wheel pucks, gooseneck bolt plates and gooseneck centre castings. The 4/7-pin trailer connector at the bumper and an additional 7-pin connector are integrated into the rear of the bed to easily wire a trailer. The Gooseneck option will provide a towing capacity of 37,100 lbs. which is the new best-in-class. The maximum conventional hitch trailer weight is still at an insane 23,000 lbs. while an available covered external power source is now located at the rear corner of the truck’s bed and features a water resistant lid and 400W inverter. The 2021 Ram Heavy Duty pickups will be available by the end of December.

2021 Jeep Gladiator Willys Debuts Jeep has unveiled the all-new 2021 Gladiator Willys which offers unique content and increased durability and marks the first time the Willys edition is offered for the Gladiator mid-size pickup. The Gladiator Willys features a limited-slip differential, Rubicon rock rails and shocks and 32-in. BFGoodrich KM2 mud-terrain tires. Jeep’s Command-Trac 4x4 part-time, two-speed transfer case with a 2:72:1 low-range gear ratio further enhance the Gladiator Willys offroad potential. In addition to the enhanced capability, the Willys edition features a special hood decal, 4WD tailgate decal, unique 17-in. wheels, all-weather slush mats and a standard 7-in. infotainment touchscreen display. Under the hood is the proven 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine while all Gladiator models are Trail Rated with a badge indicating the vehicle is designed to perform well in a wide array of challenging off-road conditions.

Forging the Trail Exploring Mount Woodside in the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon and Mojave

aking my home in British Columbia, I relish having the ability to escape the grind and set out to explore M all of this province’s natural beauty. I live in a region populated by mountain vistas and scenic waterways, so on a whim I can find a new forestry access road and get a better lay of the land in short order. The Jeep Gladiator proved the perfect vehicle for climbing these treacherous primitive roads, clambering through washouts and traipsing over hill-and-dale with stunning ease. Earlier this year, I spent a week with the 2020 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon, a new product for Jeep which essentially melds the company’s venerable four-door Wrangler platform with a five-foot pick-up bed that is itself a revision of that used for FCA’s Ram 1500 pickup. This winning combination works so well, that the Gladiator won the esteemed North American Truck-of-the-Year title, as well as a long list of other awards.

Story and photos by Russell Purcell

The route I chose for evaluating the Gladiator was comprised of a network of roads that traverse Mount Woodside, a popular recreational destination in the upper Fraser Valley. On this occasion, I discovered that the district crews had already been through to prepare the forestry roads for the winter, a period that usually brings along seemingly endless deluges of rain. To prevent washouts, the crews cut ditches across the road in areas that are prone to substantial water movement. These ditches help effectively channel the water in a manner to protect the road surface, but are deep enough that most road vehicles lack the ground clearance and traction to navigate through them. The Gladiator Rubicon performed so well that I tackled the mountain twice that week, giving me the opportunity to evaluate the vehicle in its favoured environment - off the pavement. The Gladiator Rubicon is designed to conquer just about any task that the average off-road enthusiast would ask of it, including intermediate-level rock-crawling, an activity where the driver selects a route that requires the vehicle to often drive up, over and down seemingly impassable obstacles like boulders, rocks, ledges and logs. The technique requires plenty of concentration, slow speeds, and very careful and precise driver inputs. Rock crawlers typically feature large gear reductions in the drive-train, heavy-duty axles and suspension components, front and rear lockers, and a full complement of skid plates. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon models excel at this activity off the showroom floor, and the Gladiator Rubicon is no exception, once you get used to its longer wheelbase. Fast forward to the closing months of 2020 and I had the opportunity to spend a week with the newest Gladiator, the Mojave. The Gladiator Mojave is a premium model like the Rubicon, but instead of being a superstar on the rocks, the Mojave is designed to excel in the desert. Exclusive to the Gladiator lineup, the Mojave model has been outfitted to run at high speeds through sand and loose soil. In fact, the Mojave is the first Desert Rated model for Jeep, and comes equipped with a different gear set than the Rubicon, and only a rear locker, as it has an open differential up front.

12 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

Like the Rubicon, the Mojave is blessed with high-performance Fox Racing shocks, albeit slightly beefier internal bypass units with an external reservoir (which allows increased fluid capacity and aids in shock cooling in extreme conditions), and hydraulic jounce bumpers up front. As running in sand is a much different discipline to rock crawling, the Mojave comes fitted with a dedicated sand tire, as well as a different spring rate, which gives it slightly more ground clearance up front. The Mojave also features a fixed sway bar versus the electronic-disconnect front sway bar fitted to the Rubicon, as the former doesn’t require the articulation demanded by a dedicated rock-crawler. While obviously not back-to-back by any means, I did manage to travel the exact same routes as I navigated my way around Mount Woodside in both Gladiator models. Both Jeeps completed two expeditions up the mountain and both experienced similar weather conditions - dry one day, and wet and slick the other. Both managed to shine over two different routes to the summit, and both tackled the suspension twisting final drop to the mountain’s famed hang-glider launch pad with relative ease.

Our test rigs came equipped with the same Pentastar 3.6-litre V6 engine under the hood, and the optional eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine generates a healthy 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but the eight-speed proved to be a robust and smooth operating gearbox. Gladiator Rubicon buyers can click an option box for the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 engine (260 hp/442 lb-ft) mated to a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic gearbox. Gladiator Mojave buyers will have to make do with the Pentastar for now, which isn’t a bad thing, as it is well-sorted and delivers good torque, but there is talk that a Hemi V8 may find its way under the hood to help the truck sail through the desert like a proper pre-runner. The Gladiator Mojave also features a larger fan to facilitate cooler engine temperatures when operating in the desert. The Jeep Gladiator Rubicon features Jeep’s Rock-Trac transfer case with a 4.0:1 low-range ratio, while the Mojave employs the Command-Trac transfer case with a 2.72:1 low-range ratio. The Mojave’s longer ratio allows the vehicle to run at higher speeds when operating in low-range, a trait that should help it paddle through

DEC/JAN 2020 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 13

deep sand. But don’t worry, should your journey incorporate more than sand, the Mojave is still able to crawl over most obstacles, but without quite the finesse of the Rubicon. Recognizing the need for traction at speed, the Mojave benefits from a driver-selectable feature called Off Road Plus which will disable the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) at the touch of a button, allowing the rear locker to be engaged when operating in high-range. The engineers at Jeep have equipped both the Gladiator Rubicon and Mojave with beefier Dana 44 axles as they realize that both models may be asked to take a pounding. The presence of desert dunes tend to encourage jumping, or at least front-end launching berm blasts, so the Mojave sports cast-iron knuckles rather than the lightweight aluminum ones specified for Rubicon models. The frame, shock towers, and front control arms have been strengthened in strategic areas where repeated stress from impact and aggressive landings could result in significant chassis or suspension damage. Jeep has partnered with Falken to produce model-specific 33-inch Wildpeak tires for both the Rubicon and Mojave models of the Gladiator. This is terrific news as Falken tires have a long history of producing high-performance off-road tires. However, Mojave wheels have been designed to extend the vehicle’s track just enough to promote better stability at high-speeds. On the styling front, the differences between the Rubicon and the Mojave are subtle. Red tow hooks are a signature for Rubicon, so orange is the new styling accent for Mojave. The steering wheel is wider than that in other Jeep offerings and features orange stitching, as do the seats (complete with an embroidered logo), while the alloy surround on the dashboard vents carry an almost tangerine shade 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

of orange. Steel bumpers have been replaced with polymer units, but the vehicle does come equipped with steel rocker guards. The Mojave also sports a unique hood with a central faux vent and bold Mojave decals emblazoned on its flanks. The rear Jeep logo relief is also outlined in orange. What sets offerings like the Gladiator Rubicon and Mojave apart from other vehicles is the fact that the product planners at FCA have engineered these off-the-shelf models to handle the most demanding terrain imaginable, and outfitted them with top-quality, trail-tested equipment and components that carry a full factory warranty. Prior to the arrival of the first Rubicon model almost 20 years ago, consumers would have to modify their Jeep with aftermarket equipment at huge costs of both time and money, and often with poor results. Judging by the recent entries from other auto manufacturers starting to percolate into the arena with similar attributes and aspirations, it’s important to recognize that Jeep forged the trail, and vehicles like the Gladiator Rubicon and Mojave are the benchmarks. One of a Kind

The 2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid Story by Benjamin Yong, photos courtesy of Ford

T

ough. Reliable. Best-selling. These are some of the attributes that come to mind for the Ford F-150. Now green is added to the list following the arrival of the 3.5-litre PowerBoost hybrid mill for the 2021 model year, the only one of its kind in the segment. “Just because it’s a hybrid doesn’t mean we treated PowerBoost with kid gloves,” said Craig Schmatz, F-150 chief engineer in a press release. “To earn Built Ford Tough certification, PowerBoost went through the torture testing we put all of our powertrains through. No F-150 powertrain gets a pass; we have one standard for quality and durability.” Not only is the fresh engine offering the most unique in the portfolio, but also the most powerful, rated at 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque. And having an eco-friendlier slant doesn’t mean anything is compromised. As mentioned above, the vehicle has passed the same testing as regular variants, for example towing loaded trailers in extreme temperatures, surviving harsh off-road courses, and being subjected to high humidity environments and salt baths. Due to the novel nature of the hybrid, the automaker actually created a new crucible for this truck to prove itself against: a custom machine that uses multi-axis hydraulic actuation to shake the lithium-ion battery, simulating real-world conditions like hitting potholes, driving over rut-riddled terrain. More on the PowerBoost — the V6 internal combustion engine is complemented by a 35-kilowatt electric motor integrated into the 10-speed automatic transmission. The 1.5-kilowatt battery is recharged via regenerative braking, capturing the kinetic energy created as the pickup slows down. Mounted underneath the floor, interior space remains close to a conventional F-150. 22 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

things simultaneously, such as entertainment on one side and navigation on the other. Ten new driver-assist features make an appearance here, highlighted by Active Drive Assist that provides true hands-free operation on 1,600-plus kilometres of pre-determined sections of divided highways across Canada and the US. Another nifty one is Intersection Assist, capable of detecting oncoming traffic during left-handed turns.

Interestingly, the system comes equipped with a feature called Pro Power Onboard. Some of the electricity (2.4 kilowatts worth, or an optional 7.2 kilowatts) is reserved for non-propulsion use, accessible through the in-cabin and cargo bed-mounted outlets to charge work tools and toys. Towing isn’t a problem for the PowerBoost either, boasting a maximum capacity of 12,700 pounds, which is an additional 600 and 2,600 pounds, respectively, compared to the 3.0-litre diesel and the 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6. As with every 14th-generation F-150 model, the partially electrified vehicle benefits from huge upgrades in other areas, too, including technology. It’s the first full-size truck in North America to receive over-the-air software updates, similar to a smartphone or personal computer, reducing service trips and improving performance. The fourth iteration of the Ford SYNC infotainment system, SYNC 4, debuted this year and is standard, bundling some neat never-before-seen functionality. Mobile devices can now connect to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly, rather than having to tether to a USB cord. An available 12-inch display allows users to activate a split screen mode to display two

Similar to the outgoing truck, the 2021 is made largely out of aluminum, the body sitting on a fully boxed, high-strength steel frame. Claimed to be the most aerodynamic version yet, there are active grill shutters, a dynamic air dam and a redesigned cab and tailgate all helping to reduce drag and improve fuel consumption. The estimated range on a full tank of gas is 1,100 kilometres. Those taking the pickup to the job site should appreciate certain interior appointments on select grades — the hybrid is sold in every trim level from XL to Limited — like soil-resistant two-tone upholstery and the Interior Work Surface, a stowaway table perfect for working on a laptop or eating a quick meal. The 2021 Ford F-150 hybrid is built at the Dearborn Truck Plant in Michigan.

ROAD TEST: 2020 FORD F-250 SUPER DUTY

Properly Capable

Story and photos by Dan Heyman

T

he Ford Super Duty Series of truck is an interesting beast for me; when it was announced that the Super Duty’s smaller F-150 sibling would be moving to all-aluminum construction, we knew it was probably only a matter of time before the bigger truck followed suit but even then, it was hard to believe. After all, these Super Dutys need to haul and tow all sorts of heavy loads; aluminum would never hold up, would it? Of course, it pays to remember that with aluminum construction, you do save weight, which means you can haul larger loads and stay within the rules when it comes to maximum gross vehicle weight rating. So, in effect, done properly, aluminum construction could actually increase a truck’s capabilities. Lo and behold, in 2017, the Super Duty got the “military grade aluminum” treatment so not only was it light, but it was capable, too. Take my F-250 XLT tester, for example. It is not the most haulworthy truck in the line-up in that it gets a 6.2-litre gas V8 good for 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque as opposed to a Powerstroke diesel V8, which offers 475 hp and – wait for it – a claimed 1,050 lb-ft. There’s also a larger 7.3L gas V8 that splits the difference between the two. Still; it’s good for a 12,500 lb. tow capacity in 4x4 form, enough for a number of load types and all done without having to worry about the noise and uncouthness of a diesel. Speaking of available configurations: the F-250 comes as either a Regular Cab, SuperCab or Crew Cab depending on trim (for its part, you can have your XLT with any of the three) and with either a 6 ¾- or 8-foot box and yes, you can get the big box with the big cab. rest of the chrome bits, means you’re dropping almost three grand to add some shine. Not that too many truck buyers will balk at that, but it pays to know that there are no free lunches here. What doesn’t cost any extra, however, is my truck’s paint job which gets probably the best name in the pickup world today: blue jeans metallic. Yep, that’s about right and at the end of the day, I think the Ford may just be the best-looking truck in the segment. It has the necessary brashness of a big truck but without the ultra-swoll grille of a Ram 2500 or GMC Sierra HD and without the…well, everything, really, of the Chevrolet Silverado HD which has one heck of a confused mishmash for a front fascia.

While my truck is a fairly basic model – only the XL sits below it in the line-up -- I wouldn’t say that it necessarily looks the part. The chrome grille -- so large you could use its reflective quality to check your teeth before stepping into an important meeting – and various accents on the mirrors, door handles, bumpers and running boards add a touch of classy toughness. The 20inch chrome wheels do well to complement all of that. It does all come at cost, however; the wheels are a $1,490 option that, added to the $1,350 you have to spend to get the

26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

What’s surprising is that my truck’s FX4 off-road package adds just $400 to the total because it comes with a pretty good selection of gear: transfer case and fuel tank skid plates, premium off-road shocks, hilldescent control and special graphics. That’s a lot of kit of what amounts to just $100 apiece, and it gives the F-250 a higher ride height and a whole lot of presence. Keep in mind, though, that the solid axle and leaf spring rear suspension means there is no trick access-height lowering going on here; you’ll need to make use of the F-250’s deployable step and handle if you want some help getting to the box. Which you most likely will do as the FX4 package does increase ride height and it ain’t like the F-250 is a lowrider to begin with.

The bigger cost when it comes to option packages on this truck is that of the “Lariat Ultimate Package,” which rings in at $5,675 and adds all sorts of creature comforts: navi system, moonroof, lane keep alert and tailgate step – that last one is important for reasons mentioned earlier. That’s all fine, but I do bemoan the lack of automatic climate control, heated seats or a heated steering wheel. The $2,990 Premium Package does provide heated front seats (as well as a few other bits and bobs including some chrome trim and reverse sensing system) but still no heated wheel or automatic climate control. That’s not great. Added to which, the full-bore Lariat truck with its standard heated leather seats, B&O audio, automatic climate control and reverse sensing system is only going to run you about five grand more than an XL, and while that doesn’t come with navigation, you can always use Google maps via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto instead. Which, as it happens, you can also do on my tester through the intuitive and fast SYNC3 infotainment portal which continues to be one of my favourite interfaces in the biz thanks to its simplicity. Of course, you could say that part of the charm when it comes to my truck is the fact that it’s a pretty interesting contrast; you’ve got the tech provided by SYNC3 infotainment, but it comes surrounded by more basic stuff like cloth seating (that,

I must say, is somewhat fleet-spec in terms of colour) and the big, plastic panels all over the place. It’s unassuming and a bit retro, but right there in the present when it’s time to load a playlist or find your way to the distant relatives you only visit once a year. I like that. And of course, it should come as no surprise that the Crew Cab is cavernous; without looking it up, it seems there’s at least as much room in the cabin here as there is in the first two rows of the Ford Expedition, and probably more. There’s also a flat bottom floor to make loading your gear that much easier and a rear underseat storage bin for your more valuable items. While this may not be the most powerful engine Ford offers for this truck, it’s still a smooth powertrain that’s punchy enough and does well to get the most out of that engine and six-speed automatic transmission. Said transmission is operated by a column-mounted shifter so there’s ample room between the front seats for four, count’em four, cupholders and two sizable storage bins; the item underneath the armrest appears deep enough for a small office’s worth of paperwork, although the shelf that sits atop the affair kind of gets in the way. If this were my truck, I’d get rid of it for easier access to the main bin. While no one is going to call a big, heavy Super Duty truck like this “fast,” the get up and go is pretty good and there’s even a bit of a V8 burble as you drop the hammer, and you can’t ask for much more than that. In terms of ride quality: we mentioned the rear leaf springs before, so you’re going to get some bounce out of the back end when unladen, which should come as no surprise, of course. What I found a little more disconcerting, however, was just how light the rear end got under braking. Indeed, with off-road tuned shocks like this that provide a little more give, you’re going to get a little more front-end dive and so just a little more weight is going to come off that rear axle. Keep the braking smooth, though, and you’ll iron most of that out. What you’ll be left with, then, is a properly capable truck that looks good, comes wellequipped inside and has room to spare in the cab. Throw in the lightweight aluminum construction, and it’s job done. DEC/JAN 2020 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 27

Overhauled Chevy Hauler Story and photos by John Gunnell

G

reg’s Speed Shop LLC of Waupaca, Wis., just completed the overhaul of this half-ton Chevy hauler. The owner wanted the “family heirloom” to look new again, but we think it looks even better than when it was sitting in a Chevy showroom in 1949.

The cabs were now flexibly mounted to the frame at four points, which had a pentagon shape when seen from above. The method of retaining door weatherstripping changed. Grooved retainers, spot welded along the front, top and rear of the openings, were used in combination with a doorsill weatherstrip held by retainers and screws.

Chevy’s post World War II Advance-Design trucks had actually entered production on May 1, 1947. They were wider, lower and longer than previous models. Among major changes was an “alligator jaw” hood that was hinged at the cowl. A modern touch was integral headlights. Five horizontal bars, bowed in their centres, formed the grille.

A change in the engine was provision for pressure lubrication of the timing gears via an oil passage from the front camshaft bearing. There was also new 14mm AC spark plugs. The Carter carburetor used in 1949 had a slightly different accelerator pump arrangement. On 1949 models only, the carburetor inner choke lever also incorporated a pin that engaged a slot in the fast-idle linkage to control choke

That grille housed rectangular parking lamps between the outer ends of the top two bars. A turret-top cab was used and a desirable option was “Nu-Vue” rear corner cab windows that improved rearward vision. A larger two-piece windshield was used. Inside the cab there was a 56-inch wide bench seat covered in leatherette material. The pickup truck cargo box or dispatch box consisted of side assemblies and an end gate. The AdvanceDesign box was two inches wider than that of previous Chevrolet trucks. Only one overhead-valve six-cylinder engine was used in the trucks. The standard transmission was a three-speed manual gearbox with the shifter on the steering column. By model year 1949, the Advance-Design trucks were out long enough to start making changes of a substantial nature. The overall appearance and mechanical make up were largely the same, but the changes were the most dramatic yet seen in the series. 30 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

cid displacement. The compression ratio was 6.6:1. The motor made 90 hp at 3,300 rpm and developed 174 pounds-feet of torque at 1,200-2,000 rpm. It had four main bearings, mechanical valve lifters and a Carter downdraft one-barrel model W1-574S. Other Advance-Design Chevy features included a 116-inch wheelbase, 196.6-inch overall length, a 4200 lbs./4500 lbs./ 4600 lbs. GVW rating and 6.00 x 16 tires. Greg’s restored the truck with 15-

valve operation and prevent unnecessary flooding. There were slight changes in the 1949 steering column gearshift mechanism. A 171//2-US gallon fuel tank was located behind the seat. This was the first year that chrome series designation plates appeared on the sides of the hood on Advance-Design trucks. The ½-ton trucks carried the designation “3100.” The serial number is located on a plate attached to the rear face of the left-hand door hinge pillar and on the right side of the cowl under the hood. A typical number is 21GP-C 4192. The first or first two symbol(s) indicate the assembly plant 21=Janesville, Wis. The next two symbols indicate the model prefix/series: GP=3100 ½-ton series. The next symbol indicates the month of production: C=third month (March 1949). The next series of digits is the sequential production number which started with 1001 at each factory. The pickup was designated the 3104 model and sold for just $1,263. Yes, there was a time when pickups were the cheapest thing on the lot. The half-tonner tipped the scales at 3,185 lbs. The Chevy “Stovebolt Six” was an in-line engine with overhead valves and a cast iron block. Bore and stroke were 3.50 x 3.75 inches for a 216.5-

Chrome bumpers are mounted on it front and rear. It also has dual chrome outside rearview mirrors and the factory’s Deluxe chrome trim package. Greg’s Speed Shop stressed safety features such as period-correct directional signals (which weren’t standard equipment in 1949), dual taillights and chrome bumper guards on each end of the truck. Period-correct dispatch box wood side rails are fitted. According to the 2020 Collector Car Price Guide by AIM Publications, a ’49 pickup in perfect shape like this one is worth approximately $40,000 today. That makes the original price quite a good investment. The truck has appreciated over 3,000 percent! Chrome bumpers are seen on the front and rear.

New & Improved

2021 GMC Yukon AT4 & Denali Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of GM Canada

T

he new 2021 GMC Yukon is the sister to the Chevy Tahoe – which we just recently reviewed. Of course, most of their architectural features are common; however, the Yukon has its own fans mostly because of the Denali trim package that historically has accounted for more than 50 percent of its total sales. GMC is very aware of this buying trend and has worked hard to set Denali apart, so as to make it special. In addition, this time around, they have also added an AT4 package to the lineup. We’ll have a look at both, but first a brief recap of the new SUV’s highlights. For 2021, the Yukon becomes larger, more capable and also more connected. The key change to the Yukon’s architecture is a new independent rear suspension. This addition also creates a whole new interior space. By dumping the solid rear axle, GMC has achieved a fully flat floor in the rear. Along with a stretched body, these two changes net an increase of 10-inches of additional third-row legroom as well as 66-percent more cargo space behind that third-row seat. This much usable third-row space is a big deal.

standard 10-inch centre-mounted touchscreen and an 8-inch diagonal instrument cluster display. The Head-Up display is larger, covering 15inches on the projected windshield image. In addition, dual 12.6-inch screens are available for the second-row passengers, fixed to the rear of the first-row head restraints. Throughout the truck, outlets (12V, 110V, USB) are smartly placed to give access to powered devices in all three rows. Of course, the Yukon features 4G Wi-Fi that can have as many as ten devices on-line at the same time. Also available on the Yukon is a nine-camera system that includes Hi-Def Surround Vision, a rear camera mirror and GMC’s ProGrade trailering system. The standard powertrain for the new Yukon is the 5.3-litre V8 that makes 355 hp. However, the 6.2-litre V8, rated at 420 hp, is optional on other

GM has also added Magnetic Ride Control to this new suspension. This system “reads” the road and changes the damping of the shocks as needed – in milliseconds. Also new is Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. With air suspension, you get the benefits of an off-road lift (2-inches) at the touch of a button – and, because it constantly seeks to maintain a level attitude when you hook up a trailer, it will automatically auto-level the tongue weight. Electronics and being connected are priorities today, and GM put in the overtime to make sure that this new Yukon is the most connected ever. It has features like a 38 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

trims. Both these engines feature GM’s Dynamic Fuel Management technology that can switch through 12 different modes of cylinder deactivation for the best fuel efficiency under any condition, including when towing a trailer. Both engines also feature automatic stop/start function and they are both paired with GM’s 10-speed automatic transmission.

AT4

The third powertrain to join this stable is the new Duramax 3.0-litre inline-6 diesel engine. This small diesel is rated at 277 hp and offers 460 lb-ft of torque, most of which is available at very low rpms. This diesel is a late availability – most likely coming in December of this year. Note* not every engine is available in every trim package – check with the dealer. GM interiors have been lacking for a few years now, but for 2021 in the Yukon, that is no longer the case. Materials, design and accents have all been improved for a much more modern, comfortable interior. Now – back to Denali. As I already said, more than 50 percent of Yukon sales are Denalis. People love them – but their greatest complaint in the past was that there was not enough differentiation between Denali and lower trim levels in the Yukon line-up. That’s now fixed. For the first time, Denali models have an exclusive interior – a completely new instrument panel, unique seats and a choice of four unique colour themes, each with its own personality – outfitted with premium, authentic materials. Each of these themes includes authentic wood trim, with a natural look and texture. Leather surfaces are cut and stitched by hand in a unique Denali pattern. On the outside, Denali has always had unique accents – now there are more. Denali’s trademark Galvano chrome grille is larger and more detailed with over 10,000 individual reflective surfaces. Advanced lighting technology on Denali shows off a C-shaped front lighting signature. Called a “light blade,” it delivers LED illumination for the daytime running lamps. LEDs are also used for the headlamps, taillamps, fog lamps and other illuminative elements. The overall effect is unique – no one will mistake a Denali for another Yukon trim package. The other major change this time around is GM’s move to offer an off-road version of the Yukon that is more than just a paint scheme. The first-ever

Yukon AT4 features a unique front fascia that gives it a rugged all-terrain look and supports off-road capability. Specifically, the cut, swept-back bumper is unique to AT4 and serves a practical off-road purpose. A pair of red recovery hooks and the obvious skid plate also make this package unique. If you get the available four-corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension, the AT4 can raise itself an additional 2 inches (50 mm). When at this height, the Yukon AT4 offers a nearly 32-degree approach angle for added off-road capability. AT4 provides a contrast to Denali’s chrome-oriented look with body colour or dark accents. Key features of the AT4 include: • Two-speed transfer case • 20-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires • Traction Select System with off-road mode • Hill Descent Control • Skid plates on the underbody • AT4-exclusive seats and stitching • Unique Jet-Black interior colour theme with Brandy accents • Heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats and heated second-row outboard seats The GMC Yukon, in all its variations, is on sale at dealers now.

Add Some Air!

RVers can save serious money by measuring tire inflation monthly Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

T

he Rubber Association of Canada is an industry group for tire manufacturers. However, they have taken it upon themselves to educate and inform Canadian drivers not only about

42 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

tires, but on how to stay safe and save money on that rubber that we all need on our vehicles – and trailers. Right now, if you visit www.betiresmart.ca , you’ll see that the top stories and tips have to do with winter tires and there is some very good advice to be found there. But while scanning the site a little further down, I found information on a subject that all drivers need to be aware of, mostly because it’s the one they ignore the most often - correct tire inflation. The RAC (in association with NRCan) says that in a given year, Canadians, as a whole, may well be burning an extra 643 million litres of fuel because one or more of their tires are under-inflated. That is enough squandered fuel to fill 257 Olympic size swimming pools, and this wasted fuel will also release an additional one million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. And what does this wasted fuel cost? An estimated $650 million dollars. Imagine, all this money can be saved with just a little extra air. Consider that a tire that is substantially under-inflated does not roll as smoothly or as easily as it was designed to do. This diminishes fuel efficiency because increased rolling resistance causes the vehicle to burn more fuel, which increases both emissions and fuel costs.

According to an RAC survey, on any given day on Canada’s roadways, nearly seven in ten personal vehicles will have at least one tire that is over- or under-inflated. Most disturbingly, 23 percent will have at least one tire seriously under-inflated by more than 20 percent. “For Canadian drivers who care about the environment – not to mention fuel economy and safety – there is no easier way to contribute to cleaner air than measuring tire pressure,” says Glenn Maidment, President of the RAC. “Gaining the best possible tire-related fuel economy and performance is easy for motorists who take action. All it requires is some basic knowledge and five minutes each month to perform a few simple procedures to ensure your tires are properly inflated.” According to a consumer tire attitude survey conducted for the RAC by Ipsos Reid, only 49 percent of Canada’s motorists actually take the time to measure their tire pressure monthly or more frequently. The study also found that only 40 percent know how to verify the correct inflation pressure for their tires. And, just 38 percent are aware that tire pressure should only be measured when tires are “cold” (when a vehicle has been stationary for at least three hours, or has not been driven more than two kilometres). On a more positive note, 81 percent of drivers surveyed reported using a tire gauge to measure pressure with only six percent saying they measured tire pressure visually.

As for RVs – well, everything mentioned here applies to them as well. Not only does proper tire pressure in a trailer’s tires ensure it rolls better, it will also track the tow vehicle better as well. Looking at it the other way, low pressure trailer tires are much more likely to fail. Canadians can learn more about the importance of proper tire inflation and maintenance by visiting www.betiresmart.ca. While you are there, have a look at the winter tire information. This is technology that is constantly evolving, and you may be surprised at what you learn.

RV-ING: 2021 THOR SEQUENCE 20K

Camper Van Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

T

he Class B motorhome, or Camper Van, is rather unique among recreational vehicles. That fact was impressed on me over 20 years ago when I took my then 10-year old son, Stephen, along with me on a Class B test. I was making notes inside and Stephen was wandering through the van when he stated “Dad, this is a gosomewhere RV – not a stay-somewhere RV - right?” I remember looking at him thinking, “out of the mouths of babes.” Yes, Stephen, you were right then and you are still right today – even though you are 30 and we now do video reviews of RVs. (Be sure to click on the link to see the review of the Thor Sequence Stephen shot). So, right off the hop, Camper Vans are not for everyone – they don’t lend themselves to families and they are not for long-stay camping. What they are good for is road-tripping and (as has been the theme this summer in the time of COVID) they keep you separate and safe. For the folks who want to see what’s coming over the next rise – this is the right RV. So, let’s look at the chassis that supports it all. The Ram ProMaster is a commercial van that has been on the market for several years now. It’s unique in that it is a front-wheel drive unit and as such offers the lowest floor height among the commercial builders. With its low floor and high 44 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2020

roof, it offers a large, solid envelope for companies like Thor to build in – not cut up and re-build. Without the driveshaft running to the rear, holding tanks, electrical components, and LP systems can be better secured under the van, and that also makes for more inside storage. This one-ton (3500 XT window van) chassis is ample support for the weight of the up-build. It drives confidently with a minimum of lean and even has a sharp 36-foot turning diameter. The powertrain is the long-serving 3.6L V6 engine that makes 280 hp and 260 lb-ft of

nected to all your favourite apps, music and podcasts. Plus, voice commands for hands-free calls and texts. All you have to do is connect via USB or Bluetooth. Driving the ProMaster, you’ll be looking at what’s on the horizon, not breaking a sweat as you white-knuckle the van down the road. And, this is why Camper Vans can be so nice to travel in - you have everything you need without the driving anxiety that larger, more cumbersome motorhomes can produce. Remember this, too, when you look at the prices, particularly between B’s and C’s; they can be very close in cost, but they don’t drive the same.

torque working with a six-speed automatic transmission. The driving position is elevated, surrounded by glass, a sharply dropping nose and excellent mirrors with clear sightlines down the flat sides of the unit. In other words, it’s easy to drive and offers a relaxing travel environment. Remembering that the ProMaster is a commercial van, you’ll see the cockpit is designed for lots of easy in-and-out as well as storage spaces that contractors would appreciate. The one upgrade that I want to mention is the premium 7-inch Pioneer touchscreen dash radio with SiriusXM and navigation – a great feature for explorers. Also, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you can stay con-

The interior of any Class B is an exercise in space management. Everything has a secure place and all space is used – often in very clever ways. In the case of the Sequence 20K, Thor has put an emphasis on the full rear bath, as well as giving the fold-out bed a second purpose as a comfortable salon couch. By moving the bed/couch forward, it also takes advantage of the large sliding door on the unit, which when open, makes your campsite part of your living space. If you set up the single-leg table, you are facing out toward this open door during every meal. Even with the door closed, you have large windows down each side of the van making it light and engaged with its surroundings. In the galley, the sink, counter, stove-top and microwave are shipshape and well-positioned for easy cooking, with the ample sized refrigerator right behind you. To keep your camper clean, you’ll find residential vinyl flooring throughout. As a further aesthetic, there

is a soft-touch vinyl ceiling. Cabinets and drawers are placed in every available space in the Sequence. These are called TecnoForm Euro-style cabinets. They look great and they are back-lit by LED lights – no need to run the harsh overheads all the time. Working our way back to the bathroom you’ll see a true study in space management. This is a “wet” bath – known as such because when you shower, you are standing right in front of the toilet which is getting wet. However, just above the toilet you have the sink that – like magic – folds into the wall when not in use. There is also a full mirrored medicine cabinet, and a surround shower curtain which minimizes splash, while the sliding hard doors make for a private space. You’ll also see a bank of drawers in here – just another example of good storage options. No wasted space. Now, if you are off-grid, in a totally uninhabited camping area, you could just prop the back doors wide open for an open-air bathing experience – just a thought. The RV industry has responded to the rise of smart phones and the need to stay connected by incorporating the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth services that we now expect. In Thor’s case, they have added Wingard® ConnecT™ 2.0 to the Sequence. This is a 4G hotspot, Wi-Fi and TV antenna. It will appeal to those who work from the road, sports enthusiasts, or for rainy day entertainment. There is also a system onboard called the Rapid Camp+® Multiplex Wiring Control System. This is an all-in-one control centre, which allows owners to set up camp from either inside their motorhome on a touch-screen panel, or from their mobile device with an app. You can control water, AC, lighting, tank heaters, vents, and generator with your touch screen/phone. To accommodate an active RV lifestyle, Thor has enlisted Thule to outfit this Camper Van with a patio awning, roof rack, bike rack,

and roof ladder. These are nicely incorporated into the Sequence. To run all the electronics and HVAC systems on the Sequence, it firstly has a 30-amp shore power plug-in. But, if you’re boondocking, you can run everything with the onboard Onan RV QG 2800 Gas Generator. Sequence also uses the Go Power! 190-watt solar charging system. The sizable solar system includes a 30-amp charger with lithium charging capabilities, which complements the Re (Li)able™ Battery System. Here is a bullet list of the key add-ons and systems found on the Thor Sequence. • Onan® RV QG 2800 Gas Generator • 30-amp Shoreline Power Cord • Automatic Shoreline-to-Generator Transfer Switch • Battery Disconnect Switch • Two (2) Group 31 AGM House Batteries • Rapid Camp+® Multiplex Wiring Control System • 190-watt Solar Charging with Solar Controller • 1,000-watt Inverter • 11,000 BTU Low-Profile Air Conditioner • Truma® Combi Eco Hydronic Furnace & Water Heating System • Holding Tanks with Heat Pads • 360-degree Siphon® RV Holding Tank Vent Cap • Black Tank Flush System • 1-In. Fresh Water Tank Drain • Outside Shower • Exterior LP Connection • Pop-up Outlet in Living Room • USB Charger in Bedside Storage There is a lot of living packed into the Thor Sequence, of that you can be assured. So, if the two of you have an itch to see what’s over the horizon, have a look at this self-contained Camper Van. DEC/JAN 2020 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 47
