GMC Reveals the New 2022 GMC Sierra
G
MC recently unveiled the new 2022 Sierra that they say is the most advanced luxurious Sierra ever, offering more upscale technologies and design across the Sierra lineup, including the first ever Sierra AT4X and Denali Ultimate. The 2022 Sierra features a redesigned exterior and all-new expressive interiors with enhanced technology integration, including a massive 13.4-in diagonal touchscreen that has Google built-in compatibility on most Sierra trims. The Sierra Denali Ultimate trim offers exclusive design cues and premium materials along with first-in-class available trailer-capable Super Cruise driver assistance technology. The Denali Ultimate comes with a standard 420-horsepower 6.2L V8 engine, unique grille in exclusive Vader chrome and exclusive 22-in. wheels. Additionally, the interior builds on the already luxurious Denali cabin and features the segment-exclusive CarbonPro composite cargo box. The firstever Sierra AT4X is a new off-road version that delivers enhanced off-road capability without sacrificing on-road comfort and has the same 6.2L engine as the Denali Ultimate. It features unique Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers that work with unique springs to increase maximum front and rear suspension travel by 50 mm and 25 mm respectively when compared to the AT4’s suspension. The AT4X features a two-speed transfer case with selectable modes for different off-road conditions, and comes with front and rear e-locking differentials. In addition to these two new models, the entire Sierra lineup has been elevated with styling and design updates both inside and out, and are offered with four proven engine options - the 5.3L V8, the aforementioned 6.2L V8 with Dynamic Fuel Management, a 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel and a 2.7L Turbo High-Output engine. The 2022 GMC Sierra is set to arrive at Canadian dealerships in the first quarter of 2022.

The in-person SEMA Show returned in 2021 after missing out on 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, and once again the New Product Award Winners were announced during the show. The awards are given to the most innovative and cutting-edge automotive aftermarket products that are set to hit the market in 2022. The annual competition recognizes outstanding achievements in the development of products being introduced to the automotive specialty-equipment market at the SEMA Show. The products are judged in 16 different award categories with each category naming one winner and two runners-up. This year more than 1,300 products were entered with the winners being selected based on a variety of factors which include innovation, technical achievement, quality and workmanship, consumer appeal and more. The Exterior Accessory Product category saw CURT take top prize with its MultiPro/Multi-Flex Tailgate Sensor with Hitch Cap, while Mickey Thompson Tires and Wheels also won the Tire and Related Product Category with its Baja Legend EXP tire. In the Van/Pickup/Sport-Utility Product category, Luverne’s Impact Shock-Absorbing Rear Bumper Step Fleet Kit was named winner with Max Trac Suspension’s GM SUV Lowering Kit and Roll-N-Lock’s M-Series XT tonneau cover being named runners-up. SEMA Awards Highlight Top Trending Vehicle Models Also once again awarded at this year’s SEMA Show were the SEMA Award winners which highlight the best new vehicles for personalization as voted on by exhibiting manufacturers, and recognize top trending vehicle models in five categories including Car of the Year, Sport Compact of the Year, 4x4/SUV of the Year, Full-Size Truck of the Year and Mid-Size Truck of the year. Ford was once again the big winner, this time taking home top prize in three categories including Car of the Year with the Mustang, 4x4/SUV of the Year with the Bronco and Full-Size Truck of the year with the F-Series. Toyota also won big at this year’s show after being named champion in the remaining two categories with the Supra winning Sport Compact of the Year and the Tacoma taking top spot in Mid-Size Truck of the Year. “The SEMA Award celebrates the industry’s unique ability to identify and set trends that influence automotive enthusiasts worldwide,” said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. “Consumers are able to look to SEMA Award winners for guidance on which vehicles offer the greatest opportunities for customization.” These awards would suggest that aftermarket manufacturers are investing more in these five vehicles than any other vehicles and consumers can expect to find greater options for accessorizing these vehicles.

Mopar Introduces Two All-New Ram Concepts at the 2021 SEMA Show Mopar introduced seven custom concept vehicles at the recent 2021 SEMA Show that were displayed prominently at their booth throughout the week. Four of the vehicles were Jeep concepts, one was a Dodge and two were from Ram, including the Ram 1500 TRX RexRunner concept and the Ram 1500 Outdoorsman concept. The TRX Rex Runner truck is of course built on the Ram 1500 TRX - which is the quickest, fastest and most powerful truck ever - and adds a full suite of Mopar accessories and custom parts. The truck rides on 37-in. Goodyear tires mounted to custom 18x9 wheels and features an Ash Gray exterior paint and several Mopar Blue accents including a centre stripe that extends over the hood and roof. A RamBar accessory bar features a pair of concept 14-in. TYRI rectangular LED lights, while just below is a fully integrated, bed-mounted spare-tire carrier from Mopar. Custom metal skid plates are featured and provide increased underbody protection and increase the approach angle up to 32.5 degrees, while Mopar rock rails also help protect the side sills from any damage. A pair of 5-in. black Mopar exhaust tips provides a sporty, finished appearance and an incredible exhaust note from the 6.2L 702-horsepower V8 engine. The truck’s race-inspired interior uses a combination of features from production versions of the Ram 1500 TRX and Tradesman model including the TRX’s centre stack, instrument cluster and flat-bottomed steering wheel, and moulded one-piece door panels and a vinyl floor from the Tradesman. The Ram 1500 Outdoorsman Concept started life as a Ram 1500 Big Horn Crew Cab model and is painted gloss black with Mopar blue graphics. The truck features new, function-driven innovations that have created a true dual-purpose truck that can carry all the equipment necessary at the job site and then easily does the same for outdoor activities. A two-height position aluminum Mopar bed rack system runs the full width of the truck bed and carries items such as ladders and plywood for work and a kayak, oars, fishing poles or a mountain bike for after. The inside of the tailgate features a custom Mopar RamGate task-bench insert that features various conversion charts, an angle finder and a T-track mounting system that allows you to cut wood, tune up bikes or sharpen skis for example. The Outdoorsman rides on a Mopar 2-in. lift kit with FOX shocks and aggressive-looking 20x9 Black Rhino wheels wrapped in 35in. Continental tires. On both rails, new Mopar lightweight tube steps feature black textured paint to provide easy and safe entry from the elevated cabin. Inside, the Ram 1500 Outdoorsman includes a custom, deployable work surface that slides out from the soft centre armrest and provides 12-by-14-inches of additional workspace.

Lifestyle Choice The 2021 Ford Ranger Tremor is ready for adventure
Story and photos by Dan Heyman
T
o its credit, the Ford Ranger pickup is already pretty burly and purposeful-looking; when it was given a bit of a “rebirth” for its entry into the segment after it backed out in North America after the 2011 model year, it took the formula and kicked it up a few notches. For starters, it was larger than the vehicle it replaced – falling much closer to its bigger F-150 sibling than previously – and had its fair share of look-at-me details. Details that, while adding some toughness, also added a little flare to help drive the image home that more than just a pickup, this new Ranger was also aimed at CUV owners (or potential buyers) that might want a little more practicality. With its dark grille, the front fascia is very reminiscent of the Ford Edge crossover, for example. The wheels are more athletic than what used to be seen on the Ranger and there are all sorts of bright colours to choose from.
That still remains the case today, but it seems that Ford has decided to up the ante a little in the styling department (and more) with this: a 2021 Lariat with the Tremor package. It’s meaner looking thanks to a higher ride height and General Tire Grabber A/T rubber, which does well to fill those fenders even after the lift job. There’s also a bash plate, skidplates for the radiator, transfer case and fuel tank, and Fox suspension. If you want to take things even further, there are also a host of other off-road accessories – marker lights, spotlights and so on. There isn’t a bank of six auxiliary toggles atop the dash for nothing, know what I mean? My truck didn’t have any of this which I guess is too bad, not because it doesn’t look as flash as it could or what have you – it looks just fine – but I do find it a bit strange that something like a set of grill-mounted marker lights or even the upgraded dampers aren’t standard on a truck like this. The Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is a similar proposition, and it brings more to the table. It’s like Ford didn’t go quite for enough in some aspects. Not to mention the Ranger Raptor that Canadians and Americans have been pining for ever since it surfaced in Thailand, of all places. Overall, though, the Ranger Tremor does looks good, especially in the Velocity Blue seen here. Actually, it’s so bright you’d be able to see it from a lot farther than here and it’s not even the brightest; there are all sorts of ultra-bright shades also available. Inside, it’s nowhere near as bright – in fact it’s positively monochromatic, almost tuxedo-like on my tester which is a bit of a departure from the exterior vibe. I don’t take issue with it, mind; it’s not distracting and it does add a little old-school flare to the proceedings. I’ve tested non-Tremor Rangers as recently as last year; I found the interior styling good then and I continue to do so, although a few splashes here and there wouldn’t go amiss – maybe an exterior colour-matching strip on the seat, or something on the dash. The contrast-colour stitching I did have, though, is well-received. Since the Tremor starts life as a Lariat, you get all the niceties a top trim provides: leather seating, LED head- and taillamps, ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, 8-inch LCS touchscreen, 8-way power driver’s seat and rear underseat storage.
12 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021
The rest of the interior is something that will likely be recognized by anyone familiar with modern Fords; you have your partially-digitized gauge cluster that can be a little glare-y in the sun – though there is a lot of content hosted there – SYNC3 infotainment that remains a smooth, easy-to-use interface with crisp graphics, and steering with a few more buttons than I’d like as it is a fairly busy place. Of course, all the necessities are here – heated seats, auto climate control and satellite radio as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Comfort-wise, it’s roomy enough up front with a tall seating position and nice view out, although the slightly down-sloping hood can make it a little tough to place in tighter situations, which is less of an issue with the likes of the Jeep Gladiator or Toyota Tacoma. In back, there’s room enough for a couple of adults – the Tremor is only available as a four-door crew cab -- but I have a feeling that most owners will make better use of those underseat storage bins, although there isn’t a full-flat floor, so you have to be careful while loading gear, although transmission tunnel intrusion isn’t too bad. Like all other North American Rangers, power comes courtesy of a turbocharged 2.3-litre four banger to the tune of 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque, dispatched through a 10-speed automatic
transmission by way of an electronically-locking differential. It’s a powerplant that does have to work to get things going from rest, but once you get all that weight – about 2,000 kilos – in motion, the Tremor is able to conquer most at-speed everyday manoeuvres. Yes, it doesn’t crack the 300 hp barrier, but if we’re honest, that is really an arbitrary figure here and 270 hp is more than enough for the kind of work most of these will be doing. Indeed, while all that Tremor-izing makes for a slightly busier ride when on the road – you will feel those knobby tires on smooth tarmac and the added ride height plus larger fender gaps mean you do get more road and wind noise than in a standard Ranger – the way it transforms the Ranger into a proper off-roader is evident. I had no trouble rumbling over rutted, muddy cottage roads where bad camber and exposed rocks were the orders of the day; that’s nothing for this truck as the tires and suspension can soak all that up, all day like it’s just another day at the office. The electronic off-road aids included, meanwhile, such as a hill-descent/ascent control system, work well, though the automatic ABS application is a little on the loud side and is somewhat jarring until you get used to it. It does add a layer of confidence to the proceedings, however, which is a skill the Ranger Tremor is not short on. If you spend a lot of time on forestry roads getting to back-country trailheads and so forth, then this truck will serve you well. I wouldn’t recommend it as a work vehicle, though; my tester had no real bed-access aids (but has a heightened ride height, remember) and there’s very little in the way of bed features. My tester had a couple of tie-downs, but that’s about it; no additional storage or lighting in the walls and no cleats. Which shouldn’t make too much of a difference to the Tremor buyer. They are buying this vehicle to work as the lifestyle choice. They are off-roaders and back-country campers who want a little more practicality than what’s afford by a Toyota 4Runner or Jeep Wrangler, but don’t want to be left in the cold – or the dark – when the goings get more muddy, steeper or loose-surfaced. Which is a challenge the Tremor readily accepts. DEC/JAN 2021 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 13

Long Time Coming
The all-new 2022 Nissan Frontier has finally arrived Story and photos by Dan Heyman
T
It’s a styling change that does a nifty job of channelling the much-loved Nissan hardbody trucks of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, mixed with some proper modern styling that makes for a look that isn’t so on-the-nose retro as, say, a Ford Bronco or Mustang.
To their credit, Nissan has taken this to heart and given the Frontier an all-new engine and transmission, some more creature comforts and most obviously, all-new styling.
You can see some of the old truck in the new, squared LED headlamps that get DRLs above and below the main light for kind of a squinting look. The shape of the front fenders and leading edge of the hood also nods to the old truck, while the blacked-out grille with red Nissan logo – that’s a detail that only the Pro-4X trucks get – six new colours (including the Tactical Green Metallic shade seen here), two-tone wheels and DRL taillamps do their part to seat the Frontier firmly in the modern day.
he Nissan Frontier is getting a full-scale redesign for 2022 – and safe to say, it’s been a long time coming. We haven’t seen an all-new Frontier since the second-gen truck debuted in 2005 and we haven’t seen a new model-year since way back in 2019. That means it will have been three full model years since a new Frontier arrived on lots, as it should be doing by the time you read this.
Speaking of Pro-4; that’s one of three trims available (four if you include the two-door King Cab and four-door Crew Cab versions) – S King Cab ($39,998), SV King Cab ($41,498), SV King Cab Convenience ($43,498), SV Crew Cab ($43,998), SV Crew Cab Sport ($45,398) and finally the top-spec Pro-4X ($45,598 and $47,498, depending on cab style). There are also two available bed lengths – five and six feet, although for the most part those bed lengths are restricted to which cab length you select. The sides of the bed have also been lowered for ’22, making for easier liftover and lessening the need for other bedaccess adds, although an additional grab handle fitted to the bed wall is available. Both the SV and Pro-4X can be had with both cab types, although the Pro-4X King Cab is Canadian-specific. Apparently Canadians – especially those in the West – like their smaller trucks. The interior has also been redesigned for 2022, providing a more modern look and new features such as an optional nine-inch touchscreen display (an eight-inch display is standard), seven-inch in-gauge display and 20 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021
standard Zero Gravity seats. There’s also standard Nissan SafetyShield 360 tech (that provides standard rear automatic braking, automatic emergency braking, blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert), eight cupholders, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Heated steering wheel and seats are available at the SV level, but no matter which trim you select, the steering wheel cannot be adjusted for reach, just for tilt. I found that to be a bit of a problem as coupled with the lack of any lumbar adjustment, I never quite found the perfect driver seating position. I came pretty close after a bit of tweaking – and the seats are comfortable and supportive – but I never felt like I was 100-percent seated correctly. They have, however, improved interior ergonomics by moving the shift lever closer to the driver. Being the big daddy of the bunch, the Pro-4X gets all manner of adds such as off-road suspension with Bilstein dampers, aluminum and steel underbody skidplates, red tow-hooks outside, electric locking rear differential and some design touches inside such as more red Nissan logos and “Pro-4X” embossing. It also gets the Intelligent AroundView park assist monitor that also gets an “off-road mode” - a forward and downfacing camera that you can activate at speeds of up to 10 km/h. It’s especially helpful as you crest hills, so you can see on the monitor what’s coming, when all you can see through the windscreen is the great blue yonder. A hill descent system can be activated on the fly with the push of a button (placed somewhat awkwardly by the driver’s left knee) that allows you to focus on steering as you head downhill while the computers handle the braking and transmission.

Power from the new V6 – 93 percent of which is made up of all-new parts – is rated at 310 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. That’s more hp than the old truck, but the torque figure remains unchanged. The only transmission you can pair with it is a new nine-speed automatic, a partnership which makes for some great mid-range grunt but takes a
come through the front axle. Speaking of metering out bumps: it’s here where we also really feel what the hydraulic body mounts have done. I found myself moving to and fro far less in the cabin than I would have expected considering the harshness of the cottage road I was on, and that feeling of stability makes it much easier to focus on the task at hand, and that’s getting through adverse terrain as safely as possible. Coupled with the camera and hill descent system, it’s a rewarding experience. If you are a big off-roader and like to have control of your own gears, though, you’ll have to do so with the auto transmission’s manual mode as there is not a manual transmission available on any Frontier. That will be disappointing for some, but at this stage in the world of the car and light truck, we all know that the manual gearbox is just not the draw it once was, and manufacturers are responding by offering fewer and fewer vehicles that come so equipped.
little of coaxing when setting off from stop. It sounds a real treat, though, and while Nissan has spent a lot of time on reducing in-cabin noise for this generation of the truck, I don’t mind hearing a bit of a growl from the exhaust when you really get on it.
I doubt many will trouble themselves about the lack of a manual transmission, though. At the end of the day, Nissan has delivered a pickup that checks off many of the requirements that help pickups grow beyond the stigma of being work vehicles, but make them adventure vehicles instead. The Frontier looks very cool, it drives quietly and (mostly) comfortable and it has all the safety and infotainment tech one needs. Add the offroadability of the Pro-4X model, and you have a very capable entrant into the burgeoning small/midsize pickup segment.
Speaking of new parts and noise reduction: Nissan says that they’ve applied 41 new parts to help in that regard, including revised engine bay and side dash insulation, new floor damping material, laminated front door glass, and quieter tires. It’s all helped reduce engine noise, road noise and wind noise by five, three and 2.5 decibels, respectively. Of course, it may be hard to picture a five-decibel reduction but know this: the Frontier is one quiet-riding truck on the highway. Of course, if we’re talking about the Pro-4X version, then the highway performance isn’t going to be enough for all buyers; they’ll want to know how it performs off-road as well. Simply put, it performs quite well. The suspension is well tuned for this, and the hydraulic steering does well to meter out the harshest bumps that DEC/JAN 2021 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 23

MC’s upscale Denali trim has become synonymous with bringing a touch of luxury to the truck and SUV segment. The rebuilt-from-the-ground-up fifth-gen Yukon is one of the most recent examples to receive all the latest bells and whistles that come along with the designation. Also built upon the same T1 platform as the modern Chevrolet Tahoe and the flagship Cadillac Escalade, a high level of refinement is almost a given. “Yukon was the model in which Denali originated in 1999, and now more than 20 years later we’re introducing the quintessential Denali,” says Helen Emsley, global Buick and GMC design executive director, in a media release. “It delivers a first-class experience with an all-new, exclusive interior and a bolder and more distinctive exterior design.” There are many similarities shared with the two SUVs above both inside and out, like the powered assist steps that swing out when a door is opened to help occupants climb into the 1,943-millimetre tall vehicle. 26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021
Those sitting in the second row are treated to a pair of reclining captain’s chairs and a rear seat media system comprised of two 12.6-inch LCD touchscreens, another T1 commonality, paired to Bluetooth over-the-ear headphones. They can play content cast from a phone or tablet, or hook up to a gaming console using HDMI, and are even able to send navigation inputs to the intuitive 10.2-inch central infotainment display for the driver or passenger to approve. The Yukon’s overall length is 145 millimetres longer than previously resulting in an unbelievable 66 percent gain of cargo space behind the back bench (221 litres) and 41
Perhaps the biggest show-stopping feature of all is the larger and simply stunning Galvano chrome grille, made up of over 10,000 individual reflective surfaces, complementing the Cayenne Red Tintcoat paint (+ $595) on our press loaner perfectly. On either side are LED headlamps housing “light blade” signature daytime running lamps. Unsurprisingly, the cabin boasts next level premium materials, accessories and technologies. See the three rows of seats swathed in super soft perforated leather, dark walnut detailing, 15-inch head-up display, dual-pane panoramic sunroof, booming 14-speaker Bose stereo, and the first appearance of an available power sliding centre console providing flexible storage options.

The torque is really on display when being heavy on the throttle and the engine emits a nice growl to boot. When properly equipped, it is also rated to tow up to a maximum of 7,800 pounds. The Denali handles a lot better than a 2,686-kilogram vehicle should, aided by an Active Response 4WD system, two-speed transfer case, electronic limited slip differential and multi-link independent rear suspension. The four-corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension is capable of moving the body 50 millimetres up or down to help ingress and egress, improve high speed aerodynamics or give added ground clearance during off-roading. The 2021 GMC Yukon Denali is built at the General Motors Arlington, Texas plant and starts at $80,348 MSRP.

Toy Hauler RVs The RV base camp is now also your toy transport Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
O
ver 1.7 million Canadian families currently use RVs for travel and leisure time, and while kicking back is certainly a highly anticipated tenet of the RV lifestyle, more and more RVers are combining their outdoor hobbies with their travel adventures. Among these passions is hunting and fishing. For many hunters and anglers, what I’m describing is not new. However, there is a new wave of RVs hitting the market that act as both accommodation and transportation. This trend, some 15 years old now, has become so established that the variety and types of “toy hauler” RVs span the range from tent campers right up to 40-plus foot fifth-wheel trailers. These toy hauler RVs are composed of living quarters as well as a garage space. Typically, the rear wall of the trailer folds down and doubles as a ramp to drive toys in and out of the box (or transport boats, kayaks and canoes). The need for this type of RV transport reflects the growth of another market - off-road powersports, particularly ATVs and side-by-sides. ATVs in particular are considered a necessity by many today and I see countless numbers of them being towed up the highway on open trailers. Now consider that you can buy a travel trailer that will also serve as your ATV transport. And, when the garage is empty, it can also used as living space. 32 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021
Some other features that contribute to this off-grid lifestyle are lifted trailer frames, off-road suspension, larger tires and unique trailer couplers that will flex with uneven terrain. And, when you do get to your remote campsite, these trailers have incorporated systems that will let you stay longer, such as extra fresh water, larger holding tanks and solar panels. Fixed panels as well as auxiliary plug-in solar panels keep the 12V system charged indefinitely. However, some units will carry a generator. These can run on propane or gas. Usually found on larger units with an onboard gas tank that feeds the generator but also with a pump and nozzle to refill powersports units on site. The benefit of the generator is 110V power for things like the microwave, TV and A/C.
Let’s have a quick look at just some of the different units available today.
a U-shaped convertible couch. With a gross weight of over 16,000 lb., this fifth wheel needs a one-ton (3500-series) pickup to haul it.
The venerable pop-up tent trailer has added an open deck to its frame. It’s enough space to transport an ATV or whatever will fit this space. Price-wise this is the lower end of the market. Not to mention – this type of toy-hauler pop-up can be towed by a variety of lighter vehicles.
The Sportsmen 240THLE At almost 27 feet in length, this Sportsmen is ideal for two people, though it will sleep four when needed. Its carrying capacity is 2,290 lb. The clear floor space inside, when configured for transport, is 17-feet, 4-inches. The GVWR on the trailer is 7,000 lb. This set-up uses more
The travel trailer with a garage space is a common design available in a wide variety of lengths. Many of these also offer clever convertible beds, couches and tables that make use of the garage for on-site living space. These features can add as many as four sleeping spaces to the fixed number available in the front of the trailer. Many units also use the fold-down decks as patios. These options can be added to many of the trailers and some can also be upgraded to include screened rooms on those patio decks. This all adds extra living space while on site. Then, when the trip is over, stow it all away, load the machines and tow it all home. As a random sample of what’s available in the market, I’ve chosen three very different toy-hauler/off-grid units that I’ve reviewed. Have a look. Cherokee Wolf Pack 325 The Cherokee Wolf Pack is a 40-foot long fifth-wheel that is self-sustaining, carrying 100 gallons of fresh water, an Onan generator and its own on-board gas station. Its drop-down solid rear ramp opens up a 12-foot garage space. The ramp itself (at 13-feet) can be used as a patio – when suspended in a level position. The garage space also has its own mandoor to what becomes a living/sleeping space when unloaded. A removable dinette table and convertible sofas give way to a powered drop-down bed at night. The garage also has its own two-piece bathroom. The separate living space easily sleeps six (using the overhead loft as an extra sleeping space) while still offering a completely private front bedroom space with full bath facilities. The main living area has a full kitchen with the sink in the island and the fridge and stove in a slideout. The main dinette is a surrounded with
than half the length for cargo with only one modification – folding up the 72-inch bench/sleeper to lie flat against the wall. The freestanding table is easily moved to wherever it’s needed. The flooring is called “ToughGuard” – an important item for a trailer that is going to have motorized traffic pulling in and out. The bath and kitchen occupy the driver’s side wall of trailer, keeping the length as uncluttered as possible. However, this layout does accommodate a fixed Queen-size bed in the nose with enough space on either side to allow for night tables and hanging storage – there is also a Murphy-bed option with this trailer if you want even more floor space.

TAXA Mantis This unit is part of a relatively new niche emerging in the world of RVing. It’s called Overlanding. Overlanding takes the off-grid, out-of-the-park trend one step further. These folks want to get really away. This 19-foot trailer has space for four as well as a design that accommodates pets and adventure toys. Low roof access height is offset with a pop-up fabric tent-roof. The Mantis features 20 gallons of fresh water, a wet bath with cassette toilet, two-burner stove and a separate sink. The 12V electrical system runs most everything. But the key to an Overlanding trailer is low overall weight and high ride height. Mantis has a dry weight of just 2,972 lb. It also features a ground clearance of 14-inches and a Timbren axleless suspension, riding on Cooper Discoverer AT3, 16-inch tires. Another unique feature is a Lock ‘N’ Roll hitch. This articulating hitch has 360 degrees of rotation and 3-axis movement. Inside, the Mantis is all about using every available inch of space and having design features that often serve more than one purpose. For instance, the open shelves are designed to accept milk crates. Ceiling-mounted bunks can also be stowed flat when not in use. There is even a mounting hookup for an indoor hammock.

Getting Down and Dirty in an IH D-1200
Stroy and photos by John Gunnell
D
on Alwood of Auburn, Indiana purchased the ‘65 IH ¾-ton D1200 pickup seen on these pages in June 2005. Alwood told Off-Road Plus “I’m a previous owner of this truck. I bought it from a person in New Jersey who had used it in a landscaping business. I believe he purchased it from a farmer who bought it new. The bed lift, used to haul dirt, was designed and built by a company in Toledo, Ohio. The wheels were also built by the same company in Toledo. As far as mileage, I believe it showed 65,000-plus miles when I sold it. All work done on the truck was completed by professional builders and mechanics.” IH (also known as IHC, International and International Harvester) was formed in 1902 from a number of smaller firms that merged to create a giant agricultural equipment maker. The firm actually dates back to Cyrus McCormick, who invented the reaping machine. Its famous high-wheeled mid-engine Auto Buggy came out in 1910 and included passenger and pickup models, though it was primarily a passenger car. By 1913, IHC started making trucks. A new line of front-engine, water-cooled trucks arrived in 1915. The IH line was revised in 1921, when the famous S-series models became known as “Red Baby” trucks. Because the company also 36 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE DEC/JAN 2021
made farm equipment and tractors, IH trucks were also nicknamed “corn binders.” For IH’s 50th anniversary in 1957, a new line of A Series trucks arrived. These were followed by the B Series of 1959 and the C Series. The redesigned C-Series International trucks of 1961 were far more evolutionary than revolutionary; however, the models came off as a new design. While the C-Series styling dated to the A-Series of 1957, the cab itself was situated approximately six inches below the old floor line. This modification eliminated the integral step inside the door, but also gave a lower, sleeker profile (or at least as sleek as practical for a working truck).
At this time, IH was not big on annual model year change and tended to focus on integrating minor running changes as needed, with specific changes oriented towards the end of the calendar year. For 1961-1962, the Light Line ranged from the ½-ton C-100 through the 1-ton C-130. From 1963-1964, models changed to the C-900 through C-1300. The 1965 run saw the light-duty truck line named the D-series. Model offerings ranged from the D-1000 through D-1300. International’s standard D Series trucks were restyled up front for 1965. They had a new “electric shaver” grille with 31 vertical bars. Running horizontally across the 13 bars in the centre was an “INTERNATIONAL” nameplate. These trucks came with a choice of conventional Fenderside styling with flared rear fenders or Bonus Load styling with the cargo box sides flush with the cab. Except for the new grille, the trucks were virtually unchanged from their 1964 appearance. This D-1200 pickup featured here was restored in approximately 2001 with the following changes from factory specs. (1) The dump bed was designed, built and added using a Rugby hoist. (2)) Special heavyweight 6-bolt wheels were designed, built and installed with B.F. Goodrich Radial Mud-Terrain A/T R16 LT 225/75R16 tires. (3) Special bumpers were built from aluminum. (4) A new interior with rolled and pleated headliner and new seat upholstery was installed. (5) A special paint colour was sprayed on the truck. After buying the IH, Don Alwood stored it indoors. It was never driven in the winter months. During January/February 2011 the engine was removed, disassembled, cleaned, repaired, painted and re-installed. The following parts were all restored or replaced: clutch; pilot bearing; throw-out bearing; pressure plate; brake hoses; valve cover gasket set; intake gasket set; exhaust manifold gasket set; O-ring; outlet gasket; conversion gasket set; valley pan gasket; radiator cap; freeze plugs; exhaust donuts; carburetor gasket; Champion spark plugs; flywheel (resurfaced) and radiator cleaned and repaired. During Alwood’s ownership, the following parts were repaired or replaced: stop light switch; oil switch; slave cylinder; bumpers;
glove box; fog lights; license plate light; four-wheel-drive transfer case; gas tank; exhaust system (new dual exhaust system); power steering lower gearbox seal; driver’s side window regulator and brake light lenses. The truck was driven to car/truck shows quite often during the summer. It became well-known in Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio. It was exhibited at the Steuben County Antique Power Assoc.’s 17th Annual Farm Equipment Show in Angola, Ind.; the annual Red Power Show in Lima, Ohio; the Ohio Vintage Truck Jamboree in Ashland; the 24th Annual International Scout & Light Truck Nationals in Troy, Ohio; the Maumee Valley Antique Steam & Gas Association’s 36th Annual Summer Show in New Haven, Ind.; the Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg Cruise-In in Auburn, Ind.; and the 13th Annual Auburn Truck Heritage Chapter Truck Show at the Flat Creek Fall Festival in Paulding, Ohio. This pickup truck is mechanically sound and can be driven anywhere at speeds between 55 mph and 60 mph. It runs very smoothly at such speeds with the currently-installed 4.10:1 gears. With a different differential it would run fine at even higher speeds.

RV-ING: 2022 CROSSROADS HAMPTON 375DBL
Home Away From Home Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Crossroads
N
ot every RVer wants to roll on down the road. Many find a location that they really like and they stay put. This makes them permanent campers and they find these sites most often in an RV park that caters to seasonal rentals. Of course, when you stumble on this perfect location, you can set up and stay in one of these parks with just about any RV, but some are definitely more suited to this type of camping than others. In fact, the RV builders offer trailers that are intended to stay parked for the most part; these are called Destination trailers.
Similar to a large conventional travel trailer, the Destination travel trailer is constructed for seasonal use only. Units are designed for occasional moves using a heavy-duty tow vehicle and do not require a special highway permit. These units are built on a single chassis and in some cases have a removable hitch. Onsite hook-ups of a more semi-permanent nature are often required. This Destination trailer is in contrast to Park models (people sometimes refer to any trailer that is set-up to be semi-permanent as a Park model) that have detachable hitches, are often wider than 8-feet and require a special tow vehicle and oversized highway permits to get to its location. Once setup they seldom move again. If this is the type of summer vacation home you’re looking for, well then have a look at the following Destination trailer; the layout and design are specifically tailored to this one-location lifestyle. RV builder Crossroads has a lineup of Destination trailers called Hampton. Crossroad’s destination trailers are available in a variety of floor plans. There are eight versions available. Every floor plan has different layouts, lengths, weights and price points designed to accommodate every camper’s needs and that of their families. These floor plans are designed with features that enhance the unit - like sleeping lofts and sectional couches, to space

saving ideas that will accommodate everything you need in your second home. Scrolling through the layouts on-line I found a bunkhouse setup I liked. It will sleep seven, and I picture a large busy family (or a pile of grandkids – I have four now myself) enjoying the outdoors – and the indoors for that matter. From the reading I’ve done, I think Hampton has considered a variety of family models and built accordingly. Have a look at the standard features in a Hampton Destination trailer. Outside, all Hamptons come with a one-piece fibreglass front cap. For outdoor living convenience, they come with an outside faucet, outside speakers, patio awning, WiFi prep and tinted glass windows. A nice feature on these trailers is the 60 x 76-inch sliding glass patio door. Many people build a deck at their site that is flush with the door and use it as their main in and out. Though these units are meant to be seasonal, they do come with 35K BTU furnaces, an enclosed underbelly and fibreglass roof and floor insulation. There is A/C of course – but note that the main bedroom gets its own dedicated 15K unit. The trailer has 50 amps of power and dual LP tanks. Inside, the kitchen is a focal point as it will no doubt be in use more often than in an on-road RV that passes by umpteen tasty and tempting restaurants. To that end, Crossroads offers the following standard features. Deep stainless-steel sink; faucet with pull-out sprayer, freestanding table and chairs, full extension ball bearing drawer

guides, residential four-burner range, residential refrigerator, solid surface counter tops, overhead cabinets with lighting, and a stainless-steel microwave. Another nice feature in this Destination trailer is the interior height. It’s 8-foot clear inside and even in the slide outs, it’s 7-feet tall. In fact, you’ll note the extra space throughout because of its 40-plus foot length. Because of this, a King-size bed is standard, the bath is very large (includes a 48-inch shower stall) and the living area can house recliners and sofas. This living room is that much bigger because the two slide outs are opposing. A built-in entertainment centre (with electric fireplace) is opposite the twin reclining theatre seats,
while the rear of the trailer has a fold-out sofa (with enough space for end tables on both sides). And, that’s only on the first floor. That brings me to the second story bunkhouse. This loft area is accessed by a set of stairs, not a ladder. It’s geared to kids, as the height is only about 4-feet. However, there is ample room to sleep three up here – not to mention the fun factor for those kids having their own special hideout up in the loft. So, if you have already found your perfect camping spot, consider putting a Destination trailer on the site. Your home away from home.
