RAM Unveils the All-New 2019 Ram Heavy Duty Pickup in Detroit
T
he brand new 2019 Ram Heavy Duty has been officially unveiled in Detroit at the North American International Auto Show, and has staked claim to being the most powerful, capable pickup truck in its segment, with a class-leading towing capacity of 15,921 kg (35,100 lb) and a payload capacity of 3,484 kg (7,680 lb). Powering the new pickup is the same Cummins 6.7L High Output Turbo Diesel that has received a long list of upgrades and is now able to deliver up to 1,000 lb-ft. of torque @ 1,800 rpm to go along with 400 horsepower @ 2,800 rpm. The new engine weighs 27 kg (60 lb) less than the outgoing version and is still able to deliver more power and torque thanks to the cylinder block being made from compacted graphite iron, along with lighter and stronger pistons, plus an all-new exhaust manifold where the variable-geometry turbocharger is mounted and delivers up to 33 psi of boost. There is a tuned-down version of the Cummins Turbo Diesel available that still produces an impressive 370 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque, while a gasoline-powered 6.4L HEMI V8 is still the standard engine, delivering 410 horsepower and 429 lb-ft of torque. Models equipped with the High-Output Cummins are paired with the Aisin AS69RC electronically-controlled six-speed automatic transmission, while the standard-output Cummins receives an upgraded version of the 68RFE six-speed automatic. As a first for the Ram HD, the 6.4L HEMI V8 engine will be paired to the proven TorqueFlite 8HP75 8-speed automatic, which is meant to optimize shift points for both fuel economy and performance. Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2019
In terms of looks, the new Ram HD does bear some resemblance to the 2019 Ram 1500 unveiled last year, but is different enough that it shouldn’t be easily mistaken as the same truck. A new, lighter aluminum hood is featured as is a much larger and more aggressive front grille opening, while the grille itself is available in six different styles. A new front bumper boasts larger openings to provide greater airflow to the large turbo intercooler, and three headlamp variations are available including Halogen, full LED/reflector and full LED/projector with Adaptive Front-lighting System for up to 15degrees of movement. Inside, the new truck features completely new design with all-new technology features and premium materials to provide a luxurious yet functional interior layout. A new instrument panel pushes the central controls up and towards the driver, and a 12-in. fully configurable touchscreen is available as found on the 2019 Ram 1500, which allows you to display one application across the whole screen, or split the screen and run two different applications. Also new is an available 7-in., full-colour driver information display that is fully customizable and allows the driver to personalize the information displayed. The much-debated rotary e-shifter dial comes only on the HEMI V8 model, while the 258 litres of interior storage volume found on the Mega Cab model has 120-percent more storage capacity than the closest competitor. In addition, the Ram HD will feature more than 100 safety and security features, a new 360-degree surround view camera, and a new auxiliary exterior camera that improves visibility with custom positioning in and behind trailers. The 2019 Ram Heavy Duty will be built at the Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Coahuila, Mexico, and we will be sure to provide you with more information in terms of an availability date as we go forward.

All-New 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD Unveiled Ahead of Official February Debut When the all-new 2020 Silverado HD officially debuts in February 2019, Chevrolet says it will be the most capable and advanced Silverado HD ever. Until then, Chevrolet has released a few images and a small bit of information regarding the all-new heavy-duty pickup. The truck will be built at the Flint Assembly Plant in Flint, Michigan and will feature a bold front end with a chrome bar showcasing the Chevrolet wording going directly across. The truck shares a similar look to the also-new 2019 Silverado 1500, but actually only shares the roof with the half-ton truck, with every other piece of sheet metal being completely exclusive to the Silverado HD, which will be offered in five distinct models - Work Truck, Custom, LT, LTZ and the range-topping High Country. The interior of the truck will have changes similar to the Silverado 1500, including an additional 3-in. of legroom and a taller seating position. Under the hood of the Silverado HD will be one of two powertrains, including an all-new gasoline engine that will be paired to a six-speed transmission, or the Duramax Turbodiesel V8 which will produce 910 lb-ft of torque paired to an all-new Allison 10-speed transmission. Additionally, the truck will offer all-new customer-focused trailering technology, increases in both towing and payload capacities, and a host of other technologies that will be named later. The Silverado HD is set to go on sale mid-2019 with the full lot of information being available at the February 2019 debut.
Rivian Offering Fully Electric Pickup and SUV in Canada After its recent appearance at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show, electric truck manufacturer Rivian announced that it has begun taking orders for its 100-percent electric R1T pickup and the R1S SUV. Both vehicles will share a platform and some components, including a quad-motor system that has an electric motor powering each wheel. Rivian says the range of the vehicles is up to 400 miles, which translates to 644 km for those of us in Canada, with a 060 mph or roughly 100 km/h time of just 3 seconds, which means they will pack some serious power. Both vehicles are able to wade in water at a depth of up to 3-ft. which is something you may not expect to see out of a fully electric vehicle. Rivian says the pickup features a payload of 800 kg with a 5,000-kg towing capacity, while the SUV is rated at the same 800-kg payload with a 3,500-kg towing capacity. Other notable features include what Rivian calls a gear tunnel between the cab and bed to increase cargo capacity on the pickup, and a front trunk on the SUV. In terms of pricing, the Rivian website says the starting price is $61,500 USD for the pickup and $65,000 USD for the SUV, which translates to roughly $81,588 CAD and $86,232 CAD respectively. By now, you’ve probably heard about the all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator mid-sized pickup, which is set to arrive in dealership showrooms in the second quarter of 2019. When it does arrive, the Mopar brand will be offering a portfolio of more than 200 parts and accessories to enhance what Jeep is calling ‘the most capable midsize truck ever.’ The majority of the parts will be ready when the truck does launch, and includes active lifestyle, truckcapable accessories such as bed-mounted cross rails and additional performance content such as off-road lights and beadlock wheels, all of which have been specifically designed for the Gladiator. The parts will be backed by a factory warranty and were created while working closely with the Jeep brand engineering and the product design office, through thousands upon thousands of hours of development and testing. Other parts that will be available include a Jeep Performance Parts (JPP) 2-in. lift kit, JPP tube doors, Mopar spray-in bedliner, tonneau covers, a truck bed storage system, tube doors and all-weather mats, to name a few. Ford F-150 Diesel Named AJAC’s Best New Pickup The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) have recently announced their 12 vehicle class winners that will ultimately determine the 2019 Canadian Car of the Year, Utility Vehicle of the Year and Green Car of the Year. The announcement was made at the Montreal International Auto Show and saw Mazda put on a great showing, taking home top prize in three categories with Kia winning two categories. In the Best New Pickup category, the Ford F-150 Diesel narrowly edged out the Ram 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 to take the win and will now have to go up against a plethora of CUV and SUV candidates in order to be crowned Utility Vehicle of the Year. Each finalist, and ultimately each w i n n e r, w a s chosen based on more than 1,500 ballots submitted over six months by AJAC journalist members who also attended the famed TestFest event, where each vehicle in the running for all 12 categories was available for a test drive. The 2019 Canadian Car of the Year and 2019 Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year awards will be presented as part of the opening ceremonies for the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto on February 14, 2019. From there, the Canadian Green Car of the Year and Green Utility Vehicle of the Year will be presented a month later at the Vancouver International Auto Show on Tuesday, March, 19, 2019.

Something for Everyone The Ford Ranger is finally back in North America and is as versatile as ever
Story and photos by Dan Heyman, additional photos courtesy of Ford
t’s not often that a manufacturer rejuvenates two once-loved nameplates in a single year, but so it goes with Ifour Ford, who this year have unleashed both the Ford Mustang Bullitt muscle car and Ranger pickup, arriving about months apart, both as 2019 models. While the Bullitt has the nostalgia aspects all wrapped up, the Ranger is the more notable release, if for no other reason than they should sell a ton of these, if the outcry when the last one rolled off the line in 2011 is anything to go by. Plus, it’s a pickup and pickups sell in droves, though the Ranger does have the little matter of the F-150 to worry about, what with the eight billion they sell every year, or whatever it is. Ford is confident that the Ranger won’t make much of a dent in that, but don’t think that means the Ranger won’t sell. Far from it. You see, Ford has not just pickup people in mind for the Ranger, but crossover and even hatchback people, too. The thought is that as households continue to have fewer cars, the Ranger could potentially pull off the neat trick of offering the coolness and trendiness of an Edge or an Escape, but also the practicality of the much-ballyhooed F-150. If all goes to plan, people who were considering upgrading from a hatch to a CUV or SUV would look at the Ranger, and people who were considering re-buying a CUV or SUV might do the same.
For me, one of the big draws – aside from the styling, which we’ll get to in a minute – is how simple Ford is making the buying process. Unlike the F-150 (or any other full-size pickup, for that matter), with the Ranger there aren’t infinite combinations of bed lengths, cab lengths, engine types, or drive types; in Canada, all we’re getting is the 4x4 model, either SuperCab (XL: $30,969, XLT: $35,539) or SuperCrew (XLT: $37,339, Lariat: $42,289) cabs, two bed lengths (five feet for SuperCrew trucks, six for SuperCab models) and a single engine and transmission combination: a 270 hp/310 lb-ft 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbo four mated to a 10-speed automatic. There are a few colours to choose from, and a few wheel choices, and that’s it. Buying one of these should be as close to ordering a Tim Horton’s Double-Double as you can get in the truck or car world. And yes, you read that right: the top-spec Ranger with 4x4, turbo power and all that can be had for a hair over what it takes to get a base-model Tacoma double cab V6 4x4. Styling-wise, it starts with colour. There are the requisite blacks, greys and silvers, to be sure, but they’re complemented by more out-there stuff such as burnt orange, bright blue and red. It’s all punctuated by one of three grille choices, some of which do a proper job of pulling off the pickup-as-CUV effect, especially when seen from head-on. Otherwise, a plethora of rounded edges, two-tone wheel choices and standard fitment of knobby all-terrain tires all point to the lifestyle aspects of the Ranger. The theme continues inside; there may not be a gear select dial as there is in an Edge, but there is still a car-like console shifter (a column shifter is not an option), ultramodern gauge cluster and optional SYNC3 infotainment with B&O Play audio. For its part, SYNC3 remains one of the better systems in the game, with well-aligned menus, sharp graphics and user-friendly interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also here, so the lifestyleists – people who love their in-car entertainment – should be pleased with what’s on offer.

piped in a little artificial engine noise, so the turbocharged ‘plant gets a little more attitude, a quality often left behind with the switch to turbocharging. Apparently, like muscle car people, truck people like a bit of a growl from their trucks and a completely silent travel/work companion simply wouldn’t do. It quiets down as you get moving, however, as my driver partner and I found ourselves conversing at normal levels throughout our drive. The quiet attitude is matched by the surprisingly smooth ride, one that, as I look back, is unlike any I’ve ever experienced in a truck before. Smart damping and spring settings have made for a ride that’s as crossover-like as the looks suggest, and it should be a strong selling point. If you want a slightly more serious chassis set-up, however, the $1,400 FX4 off-road package should do the trick. It provides all-terrain tires, electronic locking rear differential, front skid plate, and special tuning for the monotube shocks, and pitch and roll angles as well as steering angles are added to the gauge cluster screen. What about the truckists, though? The folks who tow, who haul and who need their truck to work a day-to-day grind? Well, they’ll likely be happy to know that the Ranger tows up to 7,500 lbs. no matter which of the four configurations you choose, and while Ford’s Pro Trailer Backup Assist tech isn’t available at this juncture, $600 gets you a tow package on all models. It provides a 4/7-pin wiring harness and Class IV receiver. We had the chance to try some towing at the Ranger launch event in surfy San Diego (because where else would you launch an active-lifestyle pickup) and while the 1,500-lb. jet skis we were towing are a drop in the bucket considering the overall tow rating, how the Ranger behaved under both braking and acceleration was mighty impressive from a powertrain standpoint, while the way the blind spot system can accommodate a trailer was impressive from a tech standpoint, especially when navigating rush hour traffic. As you can imagine, without the trailer anchor behind it, the Ranger is a properly sprightly thing, getting up to highway speeds in fine form – 310 lb-ft in an unladen 4WD truck will do that. They’ve also 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2019
We were given the chance to take the Rangers - equipped with the FX4 off-road package, of course - on a proper off-road course, and they acquitted themselves well. Steep climbs over loose gravel were well-managed, even in rear-wheel drive mode, which I found myself in only because I’d forgotten to change out of Sand/Gravel mode, which locks the front wheels out. It was here that we also tried the Ranger’s hill descent/ascent system. It makes use of the truck’s cruise control to haul you up or down hills, up to 32 km/h. So, all you have to do is worry about the steering – not a bad piece of kit to have when you’re navigating properly narrow passages as we were. It’s so easy to activate – a

single button press will do – that I could see myself using it quite regularly as an owner. It’s a great microcosm, actually, because I could see myself using the Ranger in its entirety quite regularly as an owner. That may seem an obvious observation, but while pickups are more and more becoming a daily driver, the Ranger is the first one I’ve driven – yes, that includes the Toyota Tacoma and Chevrolet Colorado – that I can honestly say “yeah, that could work as a single vehicle.” Thank the styling, thank the powertrain, thank the on-board tech or off-road chops, if you like; there really is something for everyone here.

eep, one of the hottest brands selling today, is doubling down on its success with a brand-new midsize pickup truck for 2020. Called the Gladiator (a revived Jeep truck name from the ‘60s), it will look to score sales in the rebounding mid-size market as well as offering Jeep faithful another truck option within the brand family they already love.
If you’re trying to remember the last time Jeep offered a pickup – well, it’s been 28 years. Long enough that two entire generations have grown up thinking that Jeep only builds the Wrangler. However, prior to 1992 when the last Comanche pickup rolled off the line, Jeep always had a truck as a companion to the original CJ, then the YJ and now the Wrangler.
Based on the current Jeep Wrangler, the Gladiator is instantly recognizable as a Jeep. The Jeep design team kept the legendary seven-slot grille as well as the keystone-shaped bright work. In fact, the front end of the truck and SUV are identical; and with good reason. The unique design of a Jeep is one of its greatest
Starting in 1947, Willys-Overland built a stretched CJ as a truck. Then, in the sixties, that morphed into the first Gladiator and Jseries pickups, which were built up to and through the ‘70s. In the1980s, Jeep brought out the sporty Scrambler. Only built for four years, these are very popular with collectors today. Finally the Comanche pickup was introduced and also ended the 45-year run of Jeep trucks - till today, that is. Jeep trucks are now back. This new Gladiator’s body-on-frame design offers four doors on a stretched frame 31-inches longer than the Wrangler 4-door. The wheelbase on the truck is also 19.4 inches longer. This design provides for a 5-foot cargo bed with a payload capacity of 1,600 lb. That is a very decent load for a truck this size, and I also noted that the bed is shallower than its competitors’, meaning you can easily load and unload along its length without climbing up and into it. Inside, there are under-rail bed lights, integrated tie-downs, and an external AC power plug (400W). There is also an available spray-in bed liner, bed divider and tonneau cover. The other reason for this raised cargo bed is the need to maintain the Jeep’s off-road capability as well as make room for a spare tire (up to 35-inches) stowed under it.

As for towing, the Gladiator is claiming a best-in-class rating (for mid-size trucks). It will tow up to 7,650 lb, which along with its payload capacity and space for four adults, makes the Gladiator a versatile recreational hauler, certainly on weekends. But, these numbers also suggest it will have a very work-like attitude Monday to Friday as well. Other highlights include the use of new high-strength steel that promises the stiffest frame ever in a Jeep. But at the same time, it has gone on a diet by using more aluminum in the doors, hinges, hood, fenders, windshield frame and tailgate than ever before. These weight savings no doubt go into the payload and towing capacity. Suspension in the new Gladiator is tuned for good on-road handling and ride comfort; however, this is tempered with the need to maintain Jeep’s off-road capability. To meet that need, Gladiator will be available with the same packages as the Wrangler - Sport, Sport S, Overland and Rubicon. These packages offer up a variety of interior appointments but also progressively upgrade its off-road capabilities, so that the buyer can virtually customize their new Gladiator. For starters, the Gladiator Sport, Overland and Rubicon models receive a Trail Rated badge which includes features such as: • Command-Trac 4x4 system with 2.72:1 crawl ratio standard on Sport and Overland models • Rock-Trac 4x4 system with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1 on Rubicon models as well as third-generation Dana 44 axles, Tru-Lock electric front- and rear-axle lockers, Trac-Lok limited-slip differential and segment-exclusive sway-bar disconnect. • Skid plates and front and rear tow hooks • Standard on Rubicon, steel heavy-duty off-road rear bumper and available front steel winch-ready bumper with removable end caps • Approach angle of 43.6 degrees, breakover angle of 20.3 degrees, departure angle of 26 degrees and ground clearance of 11.1 inches • Aggressive available 17-inch off-road wheels; Rubicon models get 33-inch tires standard • Up to 30 inches of water fording

Standard powertrain on the Gladiator starts with the veteran 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine that makes 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. It comes with engine stop/start standard. The engine is paired to a six-speed manual transmission, while an eight-speed automatic is optional. A second powertrain will become available in 2020 – a 3.0L EcoDiesel. This engine will be rated at 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. It will be available with only the eight-speed automatic transmission. On a personal note, I have to add that the Gladiator has travelled a very long road to production. I first saw a concept called the M-80 around 2003 and another almost-ready model (called the Gladiator) at the New York Auto Show in 2005. If you consider the time frame of these first glimpses of Jeep’s next truck, you realize that they came during a turbulent time in the auto industry – and in this company’s history in particular. Consider that in the last dozen years, Chrysler has been bought and sold three times, flirted with bankruptcy, and then had to endure “partners” who didn’t share its vision for Jeep. Thankfully, Jeep is now stronger than ever and the tide has turned. Finally, here we are with a new Jeep pickup. As I watched the company from the sidelines, it was obvious (to me) that even in the dark days, a core of true believers was quietly shepherding the return of the truck. Thank you for not giving up and welcome to Gladiator. Built in Toledo, Ohio, the all-new 2020 Jeep Gladiator arrives in showrooms in the second quarter of 2019.

ROAD TEST: 2019 GMC SIERRA 1500
Commanding Presence
Story and photos by Benjamin Yong
G
eneral Motors has officially released the GMC Sierra 1500, bigger and badder in almost every aspect, while managing to weigh less than the outgoing vehicle to boot. The list of all-new features is long, among them an industry-first “CarbonPro” carbon fibre pickup box. We got to spend a little time behind the wheel of one recently and here’s what we found. Sold in an array of trim levels, the 1500 starts from the titular entry-level model to SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4 and the top-of-the-line Denali that Trucks Plus tested. “The heritage of the GMC brand is rooted in full-size trucks, of which the Sierra is our cornerstone, with our SLT and Denali models contributing 87 percent of our total crew cab sales,” said Duncan Aldred, Global GMC vice president, in a news brief. “The next generation Sierra caters to these unique customers who demand a premium, innovative truck that supports their professional and personal passions.” Part of the brand’s goal was to give the truck an even more commanding presence, something I’d say they were successful in doing. It starts with the huge billet grille, the frame gaining extra angles, a raised appearance and a notch in the bottom section. A 3-D mesh surrounds the central red GMC logo. The adjoining headlights possess a bolder C-shaped signature daytime running light powered by LED, as are all the other front and rear lamps. The hood is also taller. The wheels — up to 22-inches — are pushed further out and, combined with a longer wheelbase, look quite aggressive. Denali customers get special badging in large block letters affixed to the tailgate. Speaking of which, another innovation is debuting on this Sierra: an exclusive MultiPro Tailgate, standard on the SLT and Denali, featuring six different functions 30 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2019

rear-view mirror camera, oodles of leg and head room — all things found in a luxury vehicle. Those who tow will appreciate the ProGrade Trailering System with accompanying app, which includes tools such as a pre-departure checklist, maintenance reminders, and trailer light test, electrical diagnostics tire pressure and temperature monitoring. Hitch Guidance helps find the perfect positioning during trailer connection, and multiple exterior cameras provide peace of mind allowing drivers to check up on what they’re carrying while cruising down the road or in reverse. A whopping six engine and three automatic transmission pairings are available from the base 4.3-litre V6/six-speed to a 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo diesel/10-speed. and positions for enhanced utility. For example, a second-tier setting makes for no-problems loading and unloading, and a standing workstation mode means quick onsite jobs are a breeze. Getting in and out of the bed is simple as well thanks to easy step entry and egress. The box is roomy — measuring 1,727 millimetres in length, and it can accommodate 1,784 litres of cargo. There are plenty of tie-downs and a 110-volt power outlet may be added. Made from roll-formed steel, the manufacturer played around with the alloy recipe and the result is 50 percent more strength than before. As mentioned, a carbon fibre variant is being offered, the lightweight material replacing the inner panels and floor. Not only weighing 28 kilograms less, CarbonPro is dent, scratch and corrosion resistant. Pickups today are by no means cheap, reflecting the amount of technology and labour going into these impressive machines. Yet, the interiors in many examples don’t necessarily reflect the price tag. F-150 INSTALL

ith nearly all the larger components of our 2018 Ford F-150 build complete, it is time to start adding smaller items that will end up making all the difference in terms of achieving that customized, aggressive look we are going for. Having worked with Anzo USA for a number of years, we are well aware of what an impact a set of new headlights and taillights can have on a vehicle’s overall appearance, and with that in mind, we reached out to see if they would be willing to participate in the build with us. Our timing for this couldn’t have been better, as Anzo had just finalized the products for the 2018 F-150, which underwent a slight facelift, thus requiring Anzo to create new products to accommodate. Once we reached out, Anzo almost immediately sent over a set of black, Plank-Style Projector headlights with the switch back function along with a set of dark LED taillights. These lights, of course, maintain the same shape as the stock offerings, but provide a much nicer look with darker housing for both and an LED outline strip featured on the
headlights that acts not only as a nice accent, but doubles as a large amber turn signal. Installation of both sets was fairly painless with not a ton of work involved for the rear and just a bit more than that in the front. The headlights require the front grille to come off, which is a fairly simple process, and both really do offer plug-and-play functionality. Once complete, we immediately noticed the difference and even began receiving compliments on the look during our first outing after the install. Not only did the lights provide us with a more aggressive look, but they even increased functionality thanks in part to a dual projector lens design that offers excellent levels of brightness, even in very dark driving situations. We’d like to thank Bee, Stacie and the entire team down at Anzo USA for brightening up our build, and we look forward to many years of proper lighting. 2. The first step for us was to remove the mud flaps and fender flares that we installed for the last issue in order to be able to properly remove the grille.
1. As you can see, while the stock headlight setup provided enough light, they offer a fairly generic look that is the same on the thousands of other F-150s you see on the road daily.

3. Next we had to remove the 14 body panel clips that hold the radiator shroud, and remove it.
4. Two bolts were removed that hold the lower headlight valance in place, which then gets pulled in order to unclip from the vehicle. This was done on either side and the valance was removed.
5. Next step was to locate and remove the lower side radiator grille bolt located under the headlight on both sides. 6. Once those were out, we removed the two connectors from the top of the radiator grille along with the body panel retainer clip, and lifted up and removed the grille, leaving us with this.
7. Next, we removed the bolt that held the headlight to the side bumper mount, as well as the top headlight bolts. From there, we removed the body panel clip located on top of the headlight and the two lower headlight bolts.
8. Once we unhooked the side headlight clip and separated the bottom from the air dam, we slowly pulled out the headlight. The process was of course repeated on the other side and the truck was now ready for the new parts.
9. First we installed the three factory connectors to the new Anzo headlights.
10. From there we slide the new headlights in place and go about reconnecting everything we removed in order to get the old ones out.
11. Everything went smoothly back into place on both sides of the truck. We then tested to make sure that all lighting functions were working properly, and once that was confirmed, we moved on to the rear.

13. First step is to lower the tailgate and remove both bolts holding the OEM taillights in place.
16. With that done, we connected the resistors and the main connector to the new tail light.
17. With everything connected properly, we slide the new taillight in place while lining up the locating pins, and tightened them down with the two bolts. As you can see, this immediately changed the look of our rear end with a more aggressive light design.

with a pop top roof, extensive storage, a king-size bed, and full bathroom and kitchen, yet it still weighs in at under 2,500 lb dry. Its GVWR is 3,400 lb. This ultra-lightweight towable is available in a couple of exterior colour options. Of note here is that the hard shell of the trailer is also its frame. Unlike many North American designs, there is no internal wood or aluminum framing – this is key to the weight savings. “These trailers are now being built in North America, but all the design elements are straight from Europe, which is what makes them so attractive,” notes Karyn Torcoletti, Director of Marketing for Erwin Hymer Group North America, Inc. “Add in the fact that most owners won’t need to purchase a heavy-duty tow vehicle, and you have the elements of something never seen in the North American trailer industry before.” 2019 Airstream Nest Airstream, known for their shiny aluminum skinned trailers, has also introduced a lightweight moulded fibreglass shell trailer. Called the Nest, it is billed as incorporating elements of nature into its interior design and colour palettes, along with a bold exterior statement. That gleaming fibreglass exterior is courtesy of a two-tone premium gel coat that’s incredibly durable.
fully the future. However, there is a new trend that is presenting itself, one (generally) driven by younger buyers that are different from the rest, and the RV builders are responding. This group is looking for a lightweight trailer that they can tow with today’s wagons and small SUVs – not trucks. This trailer should be compact, as they want to tow it comfortably and then get it into any place they desire (and being urban dwellers they have to consider that they have limited parking space). Yet despite these wants - small and light - they do not want to give up any of the creature comforts afforded by larger RVs. And, finally, electronics, connectivity and smart phone compatibility are must haves. Here are five for 2019 that fit that bill: 2019 Hymer Touring GT The all new Hymer Touring GT is a stylish ultra-lightweight towable trailer 46 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2019

luxury at the lowest tow weight in its class. It’s an example of form following function with its unique shape and construction. Welded aluminum sidewalls and floor are covered by a seamless fibreglass roof and an exterior two-tone gel-coated fibreglass shell. A lightweight composite panel material (used inside and out) called AZDEL adds to the strength, water resistance and weight savings in the unit. This r.pod is 18-ft. 4-in.-long and has a total GVWR of 3,232 lb. Inside, it comes standard with a 3.7 cu-ft. three-way refrigerator, and two-burner recessed cook top with flush mount glass cover. That kitchen features a two-burner cooktop with a cover that creates extra counter space, plus a microwave, a refrigerator with an icebox, and a generous stainless steel sink. The entry door lets in tons of light through its window, while the LED entry handle and entry lights help guide you home after dusk. It also uses a one-piece fibreglass roof and its fenders are powder-coated black aluminum. These construction features net a trailer that is 19-ft long, yet hits a loaded GVWR of

There is an E-Z Glide dinette table along with residential cabinetry, hardwood drawers and expandable cargo netting for additional storage wherever possible. On the electronics side, it comes with a Furrion Bluetooth Stereo w/remote & app, and a Go Power Solar Charging Port. KZ Escape Escape offers several floorplans, but the E171MB is new for 2019 and seems to touch on all the wants we’ve discussed here. At 19-ft long, it maxes its GVWR at 4,000 lb. Within this space, the Escape offers a single slideout that houses the refrigerator and storage. The Queen bed in the nose of the trailer is a Murphy-style convertible sofa that makes the most of day or night configuration. Other standard features in the Escape are 7 cu-ft double-door refrigerator, a two-burner cooktop and microwave. Cabinets are Amish-crafted rustic maple with rail-style doors and modern handles. There are also overhead cabinets, and lighting is LED throughout. KZ knows that the bathroom is too important to compromise, so it’s designed with plenty of elbow room in the bath along with large showers, sinks and foot-flush toilets. Electronics include digital media stereo with Bluetooth and 12-V dual USB Ports. There is also an omnidirectional HDTV antenna. Of note on the Escape is an optional Off-Road Package, which when ordered adds the following to your trailer: • Aluminum wheels with 15-in. Mud Tires • Extra Ground Clearance • Electronically-Controlled Heated Holding Tank • Double Entry Step (select models) These features will get you into even more remote locations – comfortably - and that’s the idea, isn’t it?
