FRESH TRACKS

Chevrolet Introduces AllElectric 2024 Silverado EV Chevrolet has unveiled the all-new, fully electric 2024 Silverado EV that will provide a GM-estimated range of up to 640 km on a full charge on Work Truck (WT) and RST models. The truck has been developed from the ground up as a fully-electric truck on GM’s advanced Ultium EV Platform and will feature a new body architecture which is able to efficiently leverage the available 24-module Ultium battery pack as part of the fundamental structure. This enables the impressive range and retains the capability that you would expect from a full-size pickup truck. The chassis has been designed with independent front and rear suspensions, with power transferred to the wheels on the RST models via front- and rear- drive motors that compose the e4WD system. Four-wheel steering capability reduces the turning radius for better manoeuvrability in tight spaces, while both the RST and WT models come with tow/haul mode, trailer hitch provisions, and an integrated trailer brake controller and Hitch Guidance. Additionally the RST model also includes Chevrolet’s Advanced Trailering System. The Spring of 2023 will see the debut of the WT model which will launch first for fleet customers and boasts 510 horsepower and 615 lb-ft. of torque with 8,000 lbs. of towing and 1,200 lbs. of payload. Chevy says after the initial launch year, a fleet model with up to 20,000 lbs. of max trailering with the max tow package will become available. The RST First Editions will follow starting in the fall of 2023 and feature automatic adaptable air suspension, a multi-flex tailgate with power release and a large, 17-in. diagonal LCD freeform infotainment screen paired with a neighbouring 11-in. diagonal reconfigurable driver instrument display. Power numbers for the RST models are an impressive 660 horsepower and 780 lb-ft. of torque when using available Wide Open Watts Max Power Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2022

The all-new 2022 Toyota Tundra is already available for purchase but, this spring, the hybrid powertrain version dubbed the i-FORCE MAX is set to go on sale in 10 available models. The hybrid powertrain on the i-FORCE MAX trucks is built around a twin-turbo V6 paired with a motor/generator and clutch located within the bell housing. the parallel hybrid components. Paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission, the power unit produces 437 horsepower and up to 583 lb-ft. of torque. The added power and instant torque allow the Tundra i-FORCE-MAX a 11,170 lbs. towing capacity and a payload of 1,654 lbs. In addition to the the new powertrain, Toyota has completely redesigned the Tundra from the ground up as it now features a bolder, more aggressive look than its predecessor. The truck is the first to feature Toyota Multimedia – an all-new in-vehicle technology system that is both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatible with a new touchscreen and an all-new Human Machine Interface that utilizes sight, touch and voice.

Ford Offering Vehicle-to-Vehicle Charging on F-150 Lightning and Hybrid When equipped with Pro Power Onboard, owners of the all-electric F-150 Lightning and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid will be able to provide vehicle-to-vehicle charging when using the 240-volt outlet. The high power onboard generators and high-capacity battery systems make this possible, and together with the Ford Mobile Power Cord charge, can deliver Level-2 charging that’s estimated to add an average range of 21 km of charge per hour on the F-150 Lightning and 16 km per charging hour on a Ford ETransit low roof cargo van. A widely available power adapter is used to link the Ford Mobile Power Cord to their truck, and once connected to the 240-volt Pro Power Onboard outlet, customers can use the Mobile Power Cord to charge a range of electric vehicles that use the SAE J1772 charge port of which there are many. The PowerBoost Hybrid pickup has an available 7.2 kilowatt Pro Power Onboard generator that can also be used to power tools, accessories and just about anything while the F-150 Lightning will debut with a larger, 9.6 kilowatt power source.

2022 Ford Bronco Raptor Debuts As Most Powerful Street-Legal Bronco Ever Ford has officially debuted the all-new, rock-crawling, desert-racing 2022 Bronco Raptor inspired by Ultra4 Off-Road Racing that features demanding races like King of the Hammers in the Johnson Valley in California. The long list of off-road upgrades includes things such as a fully-boxed, high-strength steel frame, new shock towers, heavy-duty bash and skid plates, B-pillar cross bar and C-pillar reinforcement, performance developed axles, a semi-float Dana 50 Heavy-Duty AdvanTEK solid rear axle, a Dana 44 AdvanTEK front-drive unit and an advanced 4x4 system with three modes… just to name a few. In addition to the ridiculous off-road capability, Ford has developed a twin-turbo 3.0L EcoBoost engine with specific Raptor-level tuning that will produce something around 400 horsepower, making it the most powerful street-legal Bronco ever made. The engine is paired to a 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, tuned to match the engine’s performance, while a true dual-exhaust system provides excellent sound. The Bronco Raptor builds on the exclusive G.O.A.T. Modes Terrain Management system that features seven driver-selectable modes, including Baja mode that activates turbo anti-lag calibration to maximize performance over high-speed desert runs. Back to its off-road capability, the aforementioned upgrades are accompanied by the upgraded High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension (HOSS) system with Live Valve technology. This system features FOX 3.1 Internal Bypass Semi-Active Dampers that are uniquely tuned at the front and rear and feature integrated reservoirs up front and remote reservoirs in the rear. Unique front and rear control arms help deliver maximum wheel travel of 13.0-in. in front and 14.0-in. at the rear while the vehicle will sit on a set of BFGoodrich 37-in. K02 all-terrain tires. The look of the new Bronco Raptor of course borrows a lot of signature styling cues from the F-150 Raptor which builds on the already great-looking Bronco. Inside features a heritage-inspired horizontal dash which integrates an all-digital 12-in. cluster which allows drivers to select from various views that emphasizes different vehicle parameters. Customers are expected to be able to places orders this March with vehicles set to arrive this Summer. FEB/MAR 2022 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE

Luxury Personified Ram’s Limited model celebrates its 10th Anniversary with a special edition

Y

ou won’t find much argument from many that at first blush, when we consider the “ultra” model in the Ram 1500 world, it’s the TRX; manic supercharged V8 power, wicked off-road chops including a Baja mode and jump control – you’ve read our story. You know the deal. However, it is my assertion that “ultra” in the 1500 world can actually take on a few flavours. One of which, painted in glorious Patriot Blue Pearl and seen here, is the 1500 Limited 10th Anniversary Crew Cab. On looks alone, you can see it’s something special; chrome wing mirror caps, wheels, grille, tow hooks, “Hemi eTorque” badging – more on this in a minute, as it’s more than just a name -- and window surrounds, tinted windows, HID headlights – this is a truck that oozes class. I do have to admit, however, that not having any form of “10th Anniversary” badging on the truck – this does exist elsewhere – kind of takes some of the sheen off how special this truck is.

Story and photos by Dan Heyman

A sheen that does return, however as soon as you swing open the big – but surprisingly light – doors. Once done, you’re presented with a glorious interior that has high-quality materials and parts in almost every direction. The quilted leather used for the seats (that come heated and cooled both front and back), parts of the dash and door cards is of top quality, as evidenced by the care instructions that come attached to the head restraints. The ambient lighting is right on and if natural light is more your thing, the massive full-length moonroof is here to accommodate. The cloth inserts in the seats and on parts of the door may remove some of the sheen, but when you sit in the seat and realize the cloth is there to help reduce shiver-inducing skin/leather encounters, it starts to make sense and no, the seat design is not some kind of call back to Ram Limiteds of old. It really is all in the details, though; the 10th Anniversary badges that finally make an appearance, the jewelled rotary shift dial, the woodgrain inserts, the splendid Harman/Kardon speakers – counting 19 -- that come with the $2,895 10th Anniversary package – even the front passenger hand holds get a contrast-colour leather surround. The gauge cluster is another thing of beauty that looks modern but doesn’t sacrifice usability as it has big, clear fonts and a massive centralized TFT display for your trip computer, off-road info and infotainment needs. I could look at this gauge cluster all day. Which is a good thing because, you know, when driving a vehicle of any kind, you should be regularly checking your instruments anyway. You may think no interior detail could wrest away top honours from the gauge cluster, but Ram has an answer for that as well, in the form of the massive 12-inch infotainment display that supports the latest Uconnect tech. Tech that, over the years, has always impressed me and while it still does, I did encounter some caveats throughout this particular test, namely the display being slow to respond in some instances, activating certain menus without my asking to do so (especially when trying to operate the seat temp controls, which I’d much rather be doing via traditional hard buttons as opposed to a touchscreen, but such is life these

within an inch of any obstacle. If that big main screen isn’t enough for you, there’s also a digital rear-view mirror and heads-up display. Personally, I’m mostly a fan of digi mirrors but you’ll want to be careful with them at night and low sun angles can wreak havoc with the camera. Luckily, switching to a traditional mirror is as simple as flipping the tab typically reserved for the manual dimmer function.

days) and at one point, shutting off completely and forcing a full re-start to sort things out. I would hope that this is just a glitch easily fixed by a computer flash, but be aware and talk to your dealer about this if you’re considering one of these. All the stuff that I’ve always loved about Uconnect, though, is present: big buttons that are easy to read, a customizable interface that allows you to load your favourite apps and commands onto the home screen, removing the need to surf through a bunch of menus, and my favourite party piece: Apple CarPlay – which is wireless – actually taking up the whole screen when active. There are many manufacturers now offering vertical displays but CarPlay hasn’t always covered the whole expanse. Here it does, so you really do get the sense that you’re looking at your iPad. Speaking of smart devices: it’s great that wireless CarPlay is included, but there’s really no point unless there’s wireless charging as well. After all, you want wireless partly to not have unsightly (and perhaps breakin inducing) cables all over the place, right? Luckily, wireless charging is here, too, and in a rather ingenious way: there is a vertical mobile device holder at the base of the centre stack, and its backing doubles as a wireless charge pad. Right on. Of course, that display is also where you turn for the backup camera which, unlike CarPlay, doesn’t take up the whole screen but it does offer about a thousand different views to help you place the big Crew Cab Ram (but with the short 5-foot-7 box; the only way you can get this trim) 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2022

All this before we even talk about the room inside the cabin, which is better than generous. The rear seats are colossal, the front seats roomy without forcing you to stretch too far to reach the controls, and the flat load floor in the back is great for packing your gear. I wanted to spend as much time sitting in the cabin as possible, and that’s a very good sign for any type of vehicle. A word of caution, however: the truck does have auto-deploying steps that activate as soon as you start to move out of the cab and they will strike your Achilles if you’re not careful. The bed also gets a deployable step from below the rear bumper to aid access, but the surface is a little small and the action to release and stow it a little finicky. I’m sure these are kinks that will work out as the truck breaks in, but it is worth noting here.

Speaking of the pickup bed, it comes loaded with features, just like the rest of the truck is. The multifunction tailgate feature comes standard, which allows you to either open the tailgate in traditional fold-down style, or as a barn-door style with a 66/33 split. It’s not split directly down the middle so you can better stow longer, thinner items down one side. To top it all off, you’ll find Rambox storage bins on either side that are lockable and drainable, so your beer will be kept both safe and cold. Unlike the bed step, the powertrain takes very little “breaking in.” That eTorque badge mentioned earlier has to do with this Ram having a 5.7-litre Hemi V8 aided by a 48V mild hybrid system, and while you can never cruise on purely electric power, the hybrid system works in concert with the cylinder-deactivation system to provide a little boost when using four cylinders. When you really get on it, though, the slug of 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque is immediately felt with very little delay – power is sent to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic ‘box so the ratios are nice and tight and able to exploit the powertrain. It should be noted, however, that the competition in the form of the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150 are both using 10speed autos right now, and they do have faster shift times than what you get here. It does pull, though, more so figuratively (as opposed to literally) as I found myself soaring forth at highway speeds in surprisingly short order, the Ram feeling like a proper muscle truck. In the literal sense, it can tow 3,560 kilos and haul 475 kg so it gets beaten pretty soundly by EcoDiesel-equipped trucks on the towing front. Which, of course, should come as no surprise as that’s what you’re getting an EcoDiesel for. You’re getting something like this to be able to be more comfortable and coddled on the day-to-day. Obviously, the interior does its part in that regard. Underneath all that pomp, the four-corner coil springs paired with four-corner air suspension do a fantastic job of following through on the interior’s promise and providing a fantastic ride. There’s very little rear bounce or shudder – even with an empty pickup bed – but what really impressed me was how well the Ram performed under acceleration and during braking. There’s very little squat on acceleration and during braking manoeuvres – even of the panic variety – there is so little dive that you almost get the impression there’s no actual suspension between body and chassis, just rigid mounts. One really does get the sense that Ram has obsessively ticked every box for the Limited 10th Anniversary truck. It rides almost surreally well, it’s loaded with equipment both of the electronic and hardware variety and the interior is so so decked-out and plush that you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re sat inside the Ram’s ultraluxe Jeep Grand Wagoneer cousin. The Ram is that good. It comes at no small cost, though; we’re knocking on the door of $100K here and that is a hefty price to pay when you consider that no 1500 is any more expensive, this side of the TRX. Heck, you’d be hardpressed to even get the 2500 or 3500 Heavy Duty trucks to reach that level, short of installing options like snow plow prep, 5th wheel prep and so on. That’s the price to pay for exclusivity, though, and safe to say if you want the “ultra,” you gotta pay for it. FEB/MAR 2022 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 15

T

hough a refreshed product with some added equipment and a massaged turbocharged engine is on the way shortly, the current GMC Sierra 1500 remains one of the best examples of the full-size truck the brand has put out to date. And here’s why. Trucks Plus tested the mid-grade four-wheel drive Elevation model, which also received a number of updates when it launched

near the height of the pandemic, as more consumers than ever were taking their vehicles and recreational toys out on road trips. Thus the time was ripe to introduce upgraded camera trailering technologies. Particularly useful while hauling RVs, Trailer Length Indicator activates with the turn signal, showing via a red overlay on the main display, identifying whether nearby drivers could potentially cause an issue during an attempted lane change. Jack-Knife Alert triggers a warning on screen if the front of the trailer approaches the rear of the pickup signalling a potential collision. General Motors’ flexible MultiPro tailgate debuted alongside the fifth-generation Sierra a couple of years back now, but remains uber-versatile and is available on the Elevation trim for the first time. Use it as a regular gate; pop up the inner gate that acts like a load stop; release both and unlatch a hidden panel to create a full-width step; and more. The 1,776-millimetre short box is capable of holding 1,784 litres of cargo and may be outfitted with additional tie downs and a useful 110-volt power outlet. The bed is still made from tough roll-formed high-strength steel yet is 50 percent stronger due to the application of revised metals in construction.

Boasting a Monochrome Appearance Package, our press loaner looked particularly sporty — which makes sense as GM says this grade targets “younger, style and value conscious buyers” — as the body, door handles, bumpers and grille frame are all sprayed a delicious coat of bright Cardinal Red paint. Providing a cool contrast are black exterior accents including the grille slats, tow hooks, skid plate, fender arches, side mirrors and 20-inch alloys. All 1500s are spacious inside and afford a great view of the truck’s surroundings from behind the wheel thanks to a higher seating position compared to the previous variant. There’s almost three inches of extra second-row legroom, too. There’s hidden storage underneath the bench big enough to stash laptops or umbrellas, and plenty of other pockets and compartments are scattered throughout the cabin. What’s especially neat about the interior is that the wide front armrest flips up to reveal accommodation for another passenger, meaning the Sierra can effectively fit six adult oc-

cupants. A rarity these days in the segment, however a welcome one, allowing a single-vehicle solution for large family adventures. Besides the above, the inside is rather utilitarian — not necessarily a bad thing. An eight-inch touchscreen display and six-speaker stereo take care of infotainment, and plug-in Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality is supported. The Jet Black cloth-trimmed seats look nice enough and are comfortable to sit on, and along with the steering wheel are heated. The inclusion of a sunroof would have been nice. A 310-horsepower/348 lb-ft of torque 2.7-litre turbo four-cylinder engine is standard, but we evaluated the slightly beefier 355horse/383 lb-ft 5.3-litre V8 (+$1,845) version offering just the right amount of grunt for work and play. Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, this particular spec is rated to trailer a maximum 9,200 pounds. For customers needing a serious workhouse, consider upgrading to the 6.2-litre V8 to up that number to 11,800 pounds. If you’re able to wait, the 2022 Elevation will feature a tuned 2.7 mill outputting 420 lb-ft of torque, leather premium package, larger 13.4-inch screen and several other enhancements.

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz blurs the lines between crossover and pickup truck Story and photos by Gerry Frechette

T

he Hyundai Santa Cruz is one of those vehicles that engenders all sorts of opinions and comments about just what its manufacturer was thinking when it was designed. One comment recently heard sums up just what most people wonder. “Is this thing a pickup or what?” In support of a “yes” answer to that, it has a pickup bed at the rear end of it, which can be used open or covered, with a fold-down tailgate. And various items can be thrown back there that you wouldn’t want, or be able to fit, in a closed vehicle of this size. So in that sense, it is a pickup, or at least a truck.

not stationary, as they slid around on the composite surface. The cover slides easily, although not so much with any snow or ice built up on its surface. Also, on one very cold morning, the twisting lock knob on its underside froze in the locked position. Under the main bed is a lockable concealed small trunk, which will hold a couple of carry bags, or a few dozen beers on ice, as it has a drain plug. Inside, the SC is very nicely finished and equipped, especially in the highline Ultimate version we had. The driver’s part-leather seat is eight-way power adjustable plus lumbar, so even the tallest driver should feel comfortable. Tech goodies include the

But here, in the third decade of the 21st century, the lines are all blurred as to what a vehicle is, when you are talking about a crossover like the Santa Cruz. Hyundai prefers that it be called the first-ever “Sport Adventure Vehicle” and backs that up with equipment and capabilities that take it out of the realm of just being a pickup. Sure, that speaks to marketing and product planning, but it is not far fetched that active people would want such a vehicle. In our two weeks of urban driving in dismal December weather, we did not have the chance to use the Santa Cruz as anything more than a stylish urban attack vehicle that got lots of looks out on the road. But of course, we did get to try out that 52-inch-long rear cargo area, and the weather was perfect to prove the worth of the water-resistant rolling metal tonneau cover the SC comes standard with. Our bags and boxes stayed dry and secure, although FEB/MAR 2022 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 25

full suite of electronic safety features, 10.25-inch touchscreen navigation, Bose premium audio with satellite radio, surround-view camera, heated and cooled seats, and lots more. The back seat space is a mixed bag, though. With either front seat all the way back, as a taller driver would want, there is not enough room back there for a normal adult’s legs. As well, the seat back is nearly vertical in its positioning, and doesn’t fold down to provide a cargo carrying option. The seat cushion does fold up to reveal a small storage area, most of which is taken by the jack. So, bottom line, that back seat is probably going to be the domain of the youngsters or pets in the family, or light items on the seat cushion. What keeps the SC from being a home run in the utility department is that there is no physical connection between the rear cargo bed, and the rear seat area. The body structure between them is fixed. It would be very useful to have a folding seat back and some sort of sliding door arrangement that would help accommodate longer items. There is, however, a sliding glass panel in the middle of the rear window, through which skis could fit. The word “Sport” is somewhat overused in this segment of vehicles, but the SC is one that actually has the performance that an enthusiast can appreciate. Under the hood resides a 2.5-litre turbo four with a lusty 281 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque as low as 1,700 rpm, which makes for very quick merging onto the highway, and effortless manoeuvring around town. The power goes out through an 8-speed twin-clutch manumatic

26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2022

transmission that shifts quickly and is always in a good gear, although it does sometimes exhibit a bit of hesitation at launch, as the clutches engage, which is typical of these units. Zero-to100 km/h runs can be done in the six-second range, and the SC is rated for 5,000 pounds of towing. Htrac all-wheel drive is standard, and it has a centre differential that sends power rearward as needed, up to 50 percent of it in Sport mode, and uses torque vectoring to decide how much power each rear wheel gets depending on the situation. With the 245/50-20 all-season tires our tester had, we weren’t going far off-road to try it out, but it handled the packed and loose snow we encountered with no problems. Suspension is Macpherson strut up front, and a multi-link set-up

The Ultimate model we drove will run you $44,799, while you can get a less-equipped (but still turbo AWD) base version for $38,499. A front-wheel drive non-turbo version is available in other markets, but not in Canada. So, if you are looking at the Santa Cruz, you would do well to give a lot of thought to what you are going to use it for, and perhaps compare it to Hyundai’s Tucson SUV, upon whose platform it is

in the back, so that, combined with decent steering and brakes, makes the Santa Cruz one very nimble and dynamic feeling small truck, even given its two-ton weight. As mentioned, there is a Sport mode, which, like most of them, mainly holds the engine rpm’s a bit higher for more instant torque. There are also Normal and Smart modes, the latter equivalent to an Eco mode without the stigma of that term, while there are also off-pavement modes for Snow, Mud and Sand. It’s not a rock crawler, but the SC should handle the terrain on the way to the lake or cabin. While doing that, it will get a level of fuel consumption that may be higher than you might expect, thanks to that big turbo four. In two weeks of urban driving, I just drove it in Normal with a couple of “Sport” episodes just to try it, and ignored my consumption, and it came out to 14.7 litres per 100 km. In my last 15 km on the way to returning it, I tried to be extra-gentle on the throttle in Smart mode, and it returned 12 litres, which is right on the Transport Canada city rating. They rate it at 8.6 litres on the highway. So, it can be done, but you may not like it as much to drive it.

mostly based. The Tucson has a bigger covered cargo area, given the space goes right up to the roof, and more rear seat space, too. But the Santa Cruz has more power, a very useful pickup design for hauling gear and equipment, and that cool factor that can’t be quantified. If you do kind of like the idea of a pickup for your active lifestyle, but want something stylish, dynamic, easy to drive, a good value and very well-equipped, the Santa Cruz might be your kind of truck. Just don’t let Hyundai hear you call it that.

Doing Big Things Cadillac Escalade Diesel

Story by Benjamin Yong, photos courtesy of GM Canada

T

he Cadillac Escalade has always been about doing things big — not just sizewise, although the fifth-generation model is indeed an impressive physical specimen, and the most spacious yet with an additional 264 millimetres of third-row legroom. The redesigned vehicle is also making a splash in the digital department offering some segment- and even industry-first technological innovations. The interior of the 2021 certainly needs to be seen in person to be believed. Big screens have been in cars for some time now, but not a curved, paper-thin OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) unit appearing to around the driver like a high-end gaming monitor or TV. Unlike a traditional backlit LCD display, this one permits the control of individual LEDs translating into crisp images where the blacks appear pure black, rather than a hazy grey, and vibrant colours pop out from virtually any viewing angle. Thanks to a generous 38.3 diagonal inches of real estate, the touch-sensitive panel is 28 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2022

It’s not only the advanced GPS making commuting easier. Similar to the system originally launched on the CT6 sedan, an advanced version of Super Cruise driver assistance (+ $2,875) is available for use on more than 300,000 kilometres of divided highways across the U.S. and Canada. Being introduced is automated lane change: when in traffic, simply flick the turn signal lever and various cameras and sensors help automatically guide the SUV safely to the adjacent lane. Tech aside, the interior of the Escalade is nicer than ever. As mentioned earlier, all passengers enjoy a lot of extra room due to the total overall vehicle length growing approximately 180 millimetres. Cargo capacity, too, has become enlarged, increasing an incredible 80 per cent to 773 litres behind the rear bench. The ability to seat up to eight adults is a treat when transporting a big group; however, the number is reduced to seven if the centre captain’s chairs are installed. Packing a rockin’ stereo is a must given the iconic model. And the team at Cadillac really went all out partnering with acoustic equipment manufacturer AKG. Working alongside these makers of professional-grade microphones and headphones, the result is a 36-speaker setup in select trims (19 speak-

Both are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Independent rear suspension and optional adaptive air suspension with magnetic ride control should ensure a smooth and comfortable experience for occupants at all times, as the latter is capable of constantly reading road conditions and self-adjusting to mitigate any bumps encountered. Conversation Starter

Dodge’s “Adult Toys” included L’il Red Truck Story and photos by John Gunnell

I

n 1979, Dodge carried forward its line of trucks known as “Adult Toys.” These models included the Street Van, the Warlock, the Macho Power-Wagon and the 4x4 Macho Ramcharger. Joining them for its second year was the L’il Red Express Truck (according to its door decals) or L’il Red Truck (according to lettering on the tailgate). Built on Dodge’s 115-in. wheelbase, the L’il Red Express Truck was a half-ton pickup with “pontoon” rear fenders (which Dodge called Utiline styling). This limited-production pickup was designed to be a conversation starter and traffic builder in Dodge showrooms. All L’il Red Express Trucks were powered by a high-output 360-cid four-barrel “Police” V8. This engine featured Super Flow cylinder heads, a police-type 252-degree camshaft (with 33 degrees of overlap), heavy-duty valve springs, a Thermo-Quad four-barrel carburetor, a cold air induction system and large diameter dual exhausts. The engine had chrome-plated valve covers, a chrome air cleaner with L’il Red Truck decals and chrome-plated vertical exhaust stacks running up behind the cab on each side. A performance-modified Mopar A-727 automatic transmission was attached behind the heated-up engine and drove to a 9.25inch rear axle with 3.55:1 gears. The Dodge L’il Red Express Truck was road tested by Hot Rod Magazine as well as by Car and Driver. It was found to be the fastest American vehicle at speeds up to 100 mph. The pre-production test truck did the standing-start quarter mile in 14.7 secs. at 93 mph and had a top speed of 118.8 mph. 38 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2022

modified Edelbrock intake manifold, dual exhausts and a cold-air intake (that went through the parking lights). Preparation of the truck was credited to Tom Hoover, Dick Maxwell, and Dave Koffel, who worked with the Product, Planning and Performance Group at Dodge. They used the standard short-wheelbase Utiline pickup for its light weight. The twin stacks were a good 2.5 inches in diameter; the rear axle was a 3.55 Sure Grip unit. To verify a L’il Red Truck, look for the VIN on the driver’s door post. It has 13 symbols. The first and second are the model code: D1=Dodge D100/D150. However, the engine used in this prototype truck was later detuned for production models in order to meet federal emission standards. All L’il Red Express Trucks had bright Canyon Red paint, accent stripes, genuine oak sideboards and Adventurer interior trim. Black or red interiors were available with a choice of bench or bucket seats. On the exterior, gold “L’il Red Express Truck” decals appeared on the doors and “L’il Red Truck” lettering decorated the tailgate. The rectangular stop/turn/back-up lights that were new in 1978, were carried over in 1979. According to the L’il Red Express Club, the L’il Red Truck was the child of Tom Hoover, who discovered that an already-certified engine could be modified somewhat without recertification. For the prototype, they used a standard 360-cid truck engine, but added W-2 cylinder heads, the cam from a 1968 340-cid V8, a

The styled wheels and white letter tires set off the Canyon Red paint and Gold graphics. It’s a very dressy-looking “Adult Toy” with plenty of chrome.

Features of this truck include the chrome valve covers, dual exhaust pipes, heat shields, side steps, the rear bumper, body side and tailgate body trim made of real oak (with chrome-headed bolts), a high-end cabin (including convenience package YF1), full instrumentation, Chrysler AM-FM sound system, power brakes and power steering. If you ever become the owner of a Dodge L’il Red Truck, carry an original sales catalogue or advertisement around with you. It seems that about a year and a half ago, troopers in the United States began cracking down on vehicle equipment regulations such as fenders for hot rods. One owner of a L’il Red Truck was ticketed because the police didn’t believe his dual-stack exhaust system was factory stock. You could say the trooper “pipe dreamed” about nailing a violator, but, of course, he lost his anti-Dodge day in court.

RV-ING: 2022 THOR TRANQUILITY CLASS B

Adventurous Lifestyle Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Thor

I

t is nice to see that some RV shows are returning, like the long-running Hershey (PA) RV Show held just recently. Scanning the list of RVs being shown there, I happened on a new Class B from Thor that is just a bit different than most. What

caught my attention was the fact that this Mercedes-Benz Sprinter-based Class B features four-wheel drive. This is how Thor describes its newest fleet addition. “Tranquility emanates an adventurous lifestyle with off-road capabilities. The Mercedes-Benz® Sprinter® 2500 passenger van with a 4x4 platform and optional all-terrain tires improves road adhesion and handling to any destination. With 188 horsepower and 325 poundfeet of torque, the six-cylinder diesel engine provides more than enough power through all weather conditions, even while towing on the 3,500-pound hitch. With its compact size and easy-to-drive features, Tranquility stands out from others in its class.” Certainly, the added capability of 4WD opens up new territory for the RV explorer. I actually drove the 4WD Sprinter on British Columbia logging roads a few years ago. These rough roads traversing the mountains showed off just how sure-footed the Sprinter was. It was as good as any 4WD pickup truck I’ve ever driven. In addition to the 4WD platform, every Sprinter comes with standard MB features like topmounted LED light bar with a cover, keyless entry, a back-up monitor, and adaptive cruise control and hands-free control of Apple Car-

Both floor plans have Tecnoform Euro-style cabinetry, available in either “Metallic Gray’’ or “Radiant Silver,” with corresponding cool-tone interior décor. At the end of the day, a warm shower is what you might want after hiking the trails, and it’s exactly what you’ll get thanks to the Truma Combi water heating system. Each version of Tranquility also has a cassette toilet, ideal for boondocking. You don’t have to seek out a traditional dumping station because your black tank is portable. The smaller size of this Class B is enhanced with rear and entryway screen doors and large opening side windows that provide fresh air and plenty of natural light. This makes the transition from indoor to outdoor living seamless.

Outside, an exterior table folds out directly underneath the Thule powered patio awning. Portable or wall-mounted, a JBL Flip speaker plays high-quality audio, once connected via Bluetooth to a favourite device or smartphone. The models highlighted in the Hershey RV Show were also shown with an off-the-grid 190-watt solar panel to help maintain a charge on the Re(Li)able lithium battery package. The system’s 400-Ah lithium battery comes with a Balmar 170-amp alternator on the Sprinter which delivers plenty of charging capabilities even at idle.

Also, Winegard provides connectivity for watching shows and movies on your Tranquility’s 24-inch TV in the living room, which is cable TV-ready and satellite-ready. Your other devices can remain charged thanks to the electronics station and USB charging ports. Tranquility also comes with a standard Thule bike rack with room for two adult-size bicycles.

Electric Capability Story and photos by Gerry Frechette The push for electrification of vehicles marches on, with most models now available at least as a hybrid, if not as a full electric. There are even some that you might not expect, like EV pickups, and on that list, one might also add the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, the off-roader by which all others are measured. It is now available as a plug-in hybrid, and Jeep calls it the 4xe (four by E). A bit of a pre-amble here. One has to assume that a good number of people who buy a Rubicon over one of the more “normal” Wranglers is at least somewhat interested in taking it far off-road. Yes, we know there are those who just must have the biggest, baddest version

of a given vehicle, no matter where it gets driven. The point here is that this is a fully-equipped Rubicon, with bigger axles, locking differentials, disconnecting sway bars, the lot. But we are not going to discuss any of that, because its capabilities are well-known, and because we didn’t get to drive it any further off road than the piles of dirt we found on which to photograph it. What we did experience, and what we have to think will be a big attraction to potential buyers, is the plug-in hybrid drivetrain that makes this a “have your cake and eat it too” kind of situation for the owner. It’s what the driver will experience by far the majority of time. The 4xe, being a PHEV, does have an engine, in this case the 2.0FEB/MAR 2022 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 47

litre turbo four sourced from Fiat. It makes some 270 horsepower, but does it in a rather coarse way that might actually complement the personality of a Wrangler, but can be a bit obtrusive too. The drivetrain is a normal Jeep set-up, with a lowrange transfer case and driveshaft to the rear end. The designers knew they shouldn’t mess with that technology by making the rear wheels turn by only an electric motor, so they incorporated the two motors that apply power both front and rearward into the 8-speed automatic transmission itself, the rear one actually replacing the torque converter. So the 4xe can go rock climbing in electric mode, or so one would think. Under the back seat, in a shock-resistant and waterproof housing, resides the 14-kWh battery pack, which, when fully charged, is said to deliver some 40 kilometres of EV driving range. At least that is what the dashboard readout said on my tester. Like most such PHEV vehicles, you can choose between hybrid, electric and E-save (don’t use any electricity.) In electric mode, and in normal urban driving, the charge consistently ran out at about 25 km. The numbers on the dashboard are never exact, but that’s quite the difference. Also, in hybrid mode with a charged battery, you’d expect a mix of gas and electric propulsion, but our 4xe seemed to still run on electric only, unless you floored the throttle, whereupon the gas engine noisily turned itself on, and stayed on until the vehicle came to a complete stop. Don’t know if this is normal behaviour for 4xe’s, or just our unit, but it was a bit disconcerting.

FEB/MAR 2022 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 49

In any case, the 4xe is pretty quick for a very large 5,300-pound vehicle, making the run to 96 km/h in about 6 seconds. One must also note that the ride and handling were better than what might have been expected from the large off-road tires (BFG All Terrain TA K02 Baja LT285/70-17) and two live axles, with what feels like a lot of rubber bushings in the suspension. The steering and brakes are somewhat uncommunicative, but not to a surprising extent.

due to the basic architecture of the vehicle, which we accept will not change. For those longer of leg and arm, like this writer, the driver’s seat does not go back far enough, and the bottom cushion is too short and low, even with power adjust. As on the outside of the

Our very well equipped tester had lots of bells and whistles inside, including the top-notch Uconnect screen, a full-length power-folding cloth roof, and power seats. Those front seats have the same shortcomings that Wrangler seats have had for decades, some

4xe, the minor trim is a bright blue that goes well with the medium grey colour of our unit. Being an Unlimited model, there is a back seat that folds down via the cushions folding forward, and the seatbacks folding down flat against them. That makes for a very commodious rear cargo compartment with all sorts of tie down points, etc, all accessed by a two-way tailgate that sees the top half glass swing up, and the bottom half with the spare tire swing out, with hinges on the right side, probably not ideal for loading while parked at a curb. 50 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2022

So, the 4xe is all Wrangler and really only breaks new ground in the use of batteries and motors. Of course, that is a very important new level of technology on such a traditional and, in some ways, old-tech vehicle. That, in turn, leads to a lot of the sort of contemplation of factors one might have for any electrified vehicle - not the least of which is cost. The 4xe Unlimited Rubicon has a base price of $59,995, some $10,000 more than the base 4xe Sahara, which may be plenty of Jeep for most folks. The regular Unlimited Rubicon costs $53,515, so the 4xe is a $6,480 hit over that. And there are many, many options available that can add $10 or 20K to the price of any of them. One must also ask to what extent that 25 or 40 km of electric range will be worth the extra coin. Driving around the city, it would be worthwhile if only because that 4-cylinder on its own would have to move a lot of weight, with the expected effect on fuel consumption. If you are actually getting a Rubicon to be driving it off-road a lot, the electric capability may not be much more than a “look at my totally quiet Jeep climbing over that rock,” although it does add a lot of torque as long as the electrons last. It might be more useful to save the electricity for the ride home from the trail head, which leaves you the gas engine to do the hard work. Food for thought. In any case, the Wrangler 4xe is a look into the not-so-far-off future of both the Jeep line-up, and off-roading in general. To get the full benefits of its electric capability, and not just have the most expensive Wrangler, or a conversation piece, you just have to remember to plug it in.

Fitz Around the World

Story by Spencer Whitney, photos courtesy of David & Pamela Blair

D

avid and Pamela Blair are well known in B.C.’s off-road community, and in 2015 they decided to prepare for full-time life on the road. Retirements were organized, Land Rover club duties were transferred, and an unassuming Defender 110 was fitted, re-fitted and rebuilt for an around-the-globe adventure. But their multi-year plan to depart in 2020 would turn out to be more challenging than they ever imagined. “It took two years to locate the right truck, and another couple of years to configure it to be up to the task of taking us around the world,” says Dave. “The plan was always to drive a Land Rover because that’s who we are. For us, there was no other option.” Their first choice was to import something like a Defender 130 – the longer wheelbase is the top choice for building a habitat on – but finding a good one proved more difficult than they thought. Lucky for the Blairs, they are well connected in the Land Rover world and eventually found a spacious ex-military 110 two-door that was being sold by good friends. Why do they call it Fitz? “Because when we got him and started planning, everything fell into place and ‘fit.’” A moment of triumph on Fitz’s journey came early. Determined to stick to the plan despite global shutdowns and restrictions, Pamela and Dave set off in August of 2020, on the road through a fractured world with an uncertain future. In hindsight, it might even seem like the right decision. After all, when met with the unknown, overlanders are often the first people to head straight in. As protocols and procedures shifted, the Blairs were even able to make it to Yukon territory and the Arctic Circle in the Summer of 2021. The goal, however, was to leave Canada and venture through the USA and Mexico for the colder months. With growing rumours about the land border opening, and snow and frost on the horizon, they positioned themselves not far from a crossing in the Fraser Valley. Land Rovers and reliability are a topic of much debate. Those unfamiliar with the near-75-year-old marque will quickly quip about tow trucks and oil gushes, but the fully initiated know that an old 52 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE FEB/MAR 2022

Land Rover is an investment – and pays dividends as a result. “Aside from the typical Land Rover issues of the odd leak, squeak or rattle, Fitz has been a champ getting up every morning ready to roll, and supporting us on our adventure,” says Dave. “It has performed admirably and reliably in less than perfect conditions.” This is, of course, the essence of a Land Rover – and is why they continue to be popular overlanding vehicles. During preparations the factory roof was removed, and in its place an AluCab Icarus pop-top was installed. Along with that came an interior load space conversion with storage, seating, and utilities like power, water and diesel-fired heat. Underneath the Defender benefits from upgraded Terrafirma suspension arms, HD OME suspension, custom drive shafts, and extra fuel storage. The venerable 300TDi diesel found in Land Rovers of this era is a reliable, well-respected, electronics-free powerplant, and Fitz’s motor benefits further from an upgraded head, improved cooling, new timing belt, and a few other refreshed or rebuilt components that were suspected to cause trouble down the road. Along the way they also collected a custom-built trailer, which offers more versatility in camp setups and a lot of storage space. So far, they haven’t experienced any serious trouble. David always makes sure to keep up on maintenance and mechanical checks – the most common issues on a Land Rover take a while FITZ FACTS: 64,144km Travelled 4,650 Bridges 358 Swans 46 Ferries 31 Burros 12 Whales 8 Wild Boars 3 Countries

to develop, so it helps to have a look underneath regularly to avoid surprises. As far as travel trouble is concerned, Pamela and David had hoped to reach Tuktoyaktuk. “Our most frustrating moment so far was not being able to get all the way north to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean,” says Dave. “At some point in the future we are determined to return to the Dempster Highway.” Certainly, they won’t be the only ones – many overlanders were disappointed to learn that the Northwest Territories would not be opening to any kind of tourists for 2021. This air of uncertainty led them to adopt a new strategy: “Full time overlanding during a pandemic presents daily challenges and some disappointments, but we’ve learned to adjust and adapt and not to plan ahead more than a week or two at a time.” Overlanding or not, many of us have adjusted to the same attitude over the last two years. Fortunately, the U.S. border opened to land crossings in November of 2021, and the Blairs were able to escape to the Southwest and, eventually, Baja California. What’s in store for the future? They’ll be enjoying an envious winter plying the streets and trails of Central America – Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica and Panama are all on the list. As for Fitz’s layout, that’s subject to change: “What you see right now may not be what you see in a few months,” says Pamela. “That’s where the bolt-together reconfigurability of the Defender platform comes in handy!”

Something Here All-New 2022 Nissan Frontier

Story and photos by Benjamin Yong

ollowing a short hiatus from Canadian dealers, the Nissan Frontier is back in 2022 form sporting an entirely new look, powertrain and more. While still riding on the same frame as before, standard four-wheel drive and the availability of a PRO4X off-road variant that we tested, as found on bigger brother the Titan, means there should be something here for most customers and enthusiasts. Read on. “The all-new 2022 Frontier builds on Nissan’s six-plus decades of mid-size truck leadership with a bold new exterior, adventureoriented interior and the latest driver assistance and connectivity technologies,” says Marc-André Nault, vice president of sales operations at Nissan Canada Inc., in a news release.

Simply attach tie downs to the built-in loops and even the most awkwardly shaped cargo can be secured easily. A slick Tactical Green Metallic paint option is being debuted — taking after the colour of “tech savvy backcountry gear” — though our press vehicle was sprayed in a striking coat of Red Alert that complemented the PRO-4X’s red grille emblem and tow hooks, and looked great against the tinted rear windows and all the other various dark bits of the exterior.

Bearing a lot of aesthetic similarities to the aforementioned Titan, the Japanese automaker says inspiration was also drawn from the boxy ‘80s and ‘90s Hardbody pickup. A large rectangular black mesh hood takes up much of the front fascia real estate, flanked by similarly shaped interlocking LED headlights. A contrasting skid plate and chunky wheel arch flares give it some street cred, and the wraparound vertical taillamps sit above a cool multipiece rear bumper. Both five and six-foot beds are sold depending on the specific model, the former doing a good job balancing agility and practicality. I wouldn’t exactly call the inside of the truck luxurious; however, the mostly black cabin has all the modern tech and accessories like a nine-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, wireless smartphone charging pad, WiFi hotspot, heated steering wheel and front seating, big five-litre capacity armrest console cubby, moonroof and more. As always, the Zero Gravity seats provide comfortable support. In addition, this is first application of an enhanced version of the Nissan Around View Monitor 360degree camera. Not only can it now detect and highlight moving objects on screen, but activates when the PRO-4X is in 4LO gearing and moving slowly to help avoid scrapes and dents during tight trail manoeuvres. All Frontiers utilize the 3.8-litre V6 engine, making 310-horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque, introduced in 2020. A capable if not the smoothest nine-speed automatic transmission replaces the outgoing fivespeed and is relatively snappy to change gears. The ride is fairly quiet for a pickup as the rear carpet has been upgraded and acoustic laminated glass fitted to the front doors. Every trim is loaded with hardware specific to tackling challenging surface conditions. The shift-on-the-fly four-wheel drive system possesses 2WD/4HI/4LO modes operated by an electronically operated parttime transfer case. Hill start assist and hill descent control make traversing steep terrain an easier task, allowing you to focus on just steering. PRO grades receive extra equipment on top including an electronic locking differential and heavy duty Bilstein suspension.
