2021 Chevrolet Tahoe Police Pursuit and Special Services Vehicles to Debut This Year

Managing Editor Jordan Allan jordan@rpmcanada.ca

Chevrolet has recently announced that the next-generation Tahoe will be available in two law enforcement packages: the Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle (PPV) and the Special Service Vehicle (SSV). The Police Pursuit option is designed to take on high speeds and offers dynamic capability with the added comfort that is needed from an everyday patrol vehicle, while the Special Service Vehicle is more focused on off-road and towing needs. Both of these models will be powered by the Tahoe’s 5.3L V8 engine that is paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The PPV engine will feature highperformance rocker covers from the Camaro’s ZL1 LT4 engine which increase crankcase ventilation and allows the Tahoe to handle high lateral conditions better than the outgoing model. Additionally, engine oil and transmission fluid are cooled by heavy-duty, dedicated cooling systems specific for law enforcement applications. In order to handle the dynamic load of police pursuits, Chevrolet worked with Firestone to create pursuit-rated all-season tires that sit on 20-in. steel wheels and were tested at multiple race tracks. Other enhancements of the PPV include specific suspension tuning, a lower ride height and a heavy-duty Brembo braking system. The Tahoe PPV and SSV will be assembled at GM’s Arlington Assembly in Texas later this year with an early 2021 availability.

Truck and the B2 pickup you’ve likely seen in a past issue of Trucks Plus. This latest model will be available in both 2-door and 4-door cabs on multiple wheelbase lengths based on desired customization. The truck features a 120 kWh battery pack and two electric motors which provide all-wheel drive, and has a payload of 5,000 lbs. The truck has an ultra-low centre of gravity which will help keep the balance at full load, and boasts electronic traction control, stability control and hydraulic power steering. A hydro-pneumatic self-leveling suspension is featured that can provide a wide-range of ride heights, as are portal axles and hydraulic ABS brakes. The actual power and range numbers of the electric motors will, of course, be determined by the build of the truck. Bollinger says the B2 Chassis Cab Pickup will be available to commercial outfitters late in 2021.

Inspiring Confidence The Toyota Tundra feels like a truck that will pull through in any situation

hile it may not be quite as aggressive as the Tundra TRD Pro truck, the 2020 TRD Off-Road still W provides 4x4 with mechanical locking differentials, heavy-duty tow package and transmission cooler. In short, you’d be fine taking this up forestry roads to remote campsites and so on. Our tester’s “Quicksand” paint job, meanwhile, looks somewhat desert-storm spec, all matted out and beige. It’s a good job by Toyota; aside from the “Cement” shade of grey you can also get on one of these, it’s one of the more hardcore-looking colours you can get in the light pickup world.

Inside, the big, broad and square dash with hardly a curved surface in sight provides a somewhat oldschool effect. The gauge cluster is a standard, monochromatic affair and the centre stack features a basic button set in an up/down alignment.

The shift lever is a huge, oblong plasticky thing and the steering wheel spokes follow suit; indeed, when Toyota’s infotainment system – hardly the bleeding edge when it comes to such tech – looks modern compared to its surroundings, well, let’s just say that’s a pretty good indication that function over form is the order of the day when it comes to interior design. Heck, you even need to start up the traditional way, by inserting a key into the ignition; no push-button start here. That’s one thing I would like to see, as it also paves the way for remote start which is nice to have in colder climes. Which, as we know all too well, are a fairly frequent occurrence in our fair country. And you know what? I love it. Well, most of it; while the infotainment does have support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (and includes nine speakers), it pales in the face of the competition with boring graphics and sluggish operating speeds. It points to this being a business-first affair, though, and in the pickup world, that’s often a very good thing. I would have a problem if there were unsightly panel gaps and squeaks and rattles all over the place, but you won’t get enough of that here to make it worth talking about. All you get is an interior full of handles, knobs, and buttons that can be operated without looking, with work gloves on, and so on. Not to mention its size; the Tundra looks massive from the outside. The grille, ride height, headlights, taillights – the only exterior styling bit that looks out of place are the wheels, whose 18-in. diameter seems out of place surrounded by so much metal. My tester’s Crewmax cab is the biggest Toyota offers and while it necessitates a shorter bed (5.5 feet is the only available length in this configuration; smaller cabs are available with 6.5- or 8.1-foot beds), it is huge inside with about as much head- and legroom as the Sequoia SUV with which the Tundra shares a platform. Those back doors are absolutely enormous as a result, and they open quite wide

12 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2020

so rear seat passengers are going to want to take care that they don’t swing those barn doors into the unsuspecting Prius beside them in the parkade.

to mention you can use regular petrol in the Tundra and not miss a beat, whereas with a turbocharged motor, you may want to consider at least mid-grade.

While the interior room is great for passengers (as are the cupholders, which number 10), the fact that the floor isn’t completely flat in the rear means its usefulness is reduced a little. There’s also no additional storage bins often seen in other trucks below the rear seats, or in the floor. Toyota could get a little more creative with the Tundra when it comes to in-cabin storage.

So it goes with the Tundra, then, that your acceleration from launch is without delay, the power being sent to the wheels quickly and smoothly. There’s even a nice growl befitting of a big V8 emitted through the big single tailpipe as you delve deeper and deeper into the throttle. It

The Tundra’s big dimensions suggest some big power is needed to get things up and running, and that comes courtesy of a single engine choice: a 5.7-litre V8 with variable valve timing, good for 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque, fed through a six-speed auto and mechanicallocking differential. That power roughly equals that which is achieved by a Ford F-150 with the 2.7L EcoBoost engine; trouble is, an F-150 with the more powerful 3.5L EcoBoost and similar equipment to my tester can be had for similar money. You won’t have quite as much room inside the Ford, though, even with that truck’s four-door SuperCrew cabin. The thing about a V8 versus a turbo-six, though, is that the power is just so effortless and the engine so much less stressed, that it can make for even smoother progress. Not JUNE/JULY 2020 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 13

makes no bones about its motive force, that’s for sure. Not to mention it helps the Tundra tow almost 10,000 lbs (remember that whole Space Shuttle stunt?) and haul over 1,500 lbs – numbers that can grow even higher if you select the smaller cabins or – as unlikely as this would be in Canada – opt for the 4 x 2 version. Yes, believe it or not, this exists. Things go a little sideways when it comes to the transmission, however. You see, the Aisin six-speed unit found on the Tundra is not the most modern of transmissions (especially when considered against the 10-speed unit found in the F-150 and the 8-speeder found in the Ram 1500). It’s not especially quick to shift – no big deal as this isn’t a sports car – but its penchant for shuffling through gears a little too often is tougher to forgive. It’s a similar experience to that which I had with the Tundra’s little brother Tacoma (though as popular as that truck is, it’s almost the Tundra that lives in the Tacoma’s shadow), and I thought the extra power the Tundra’s V8 provides over the Tacoma’s V6 would rectify things, but it doesn’t. Not entirely. It’s better, but I believe this very good engine is crying for a better transmission partner. Less of a concern is the ride and handling. Indeed; the front end isn’t going to respond as quickly to steering inputs as it does in said Tacoma, but I wouldn’t say the Tundra drives as big as it looks and is. Steering is pleasantly linear, is given just enough boost to not overwhelm your forearms yet enough play to make traversing rougher roads a little easier. The Bilstein dampers help the ride follow suit; even when unladen, you don’t get a huge amount of rear-end hop over repeated undulations and while it may be a little too firm for some, I think the chassis tuning does well to inspire confidence in the driver. The Tundra in general does well to inspire confidence. It feels rough and rugged in all the right ways, and you just know, you just get that feeling that it’s a truck that will pull you through thick and thin, no matter what you throw at it. It feels properly bulletproof and while it won’t knock your socks off with tech, exotic materials for body panels or ultra-luxurious interior environs, it remains a good, honest, hardworking, hardhat of a truck that makes it both somewhat lovable and industrious at the same time. 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2020

FEATURE: TRAILER & TOWING MARKET

Current State of Business Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko, Product Descriptions by Michele Boyarsky and Jack McCoy of Zalutko Business Services, Inc., and images courtesy of the manufacturers

Contributing Factors e-Commerce continues to grow in size and scope, with its share of dollars in the automotive aftermarket exceeding 40 percent, per the latest SEMA Market Report.

uring 2019, 21-percent of new vehicle sales in Canada were pickups - a 27-percent increase in market share when compared to a decade ago. Interestingly, despite OEM efforts to revitalize the midsize truck market, the full-size category continues to dominate Canadian vehicle sales, and by a large margin. For example, the top four full-size truck offerings collectively outsell the entire midsize category, with, unsurprisingly, the Big Three capturing a vast majority of sales. Specifically, “Year-over-year, Ram market share in the full-size category jumped from 24 to 27-percent, thanks to the addition of nearly 12,000 extra sales,” says Timothy Cain of Driving, a leading online destination for the latest automotive news, reviews, photos, and video. Strong new and used vehicle sales contribute to a healthy aftermarket as well. One product category that benefits from an increased number of pickups and SUVs on the road is trailer and towing. According to the 2019 SEMA Market Report, pickups and SUVs combine for the largest share of dollars in the category, or approximately 62 percent. On the pages that follow, readers will be educated about the current state of business, factors influencing the trailer and towing category, as well as featured products from some of the biggest, most trusted names in the aftermarket. Sales Increase Towing equipment sales, from gooseneck hitches and crossbars to tow dollies and tow bars, are on the rise. In fact, the worldwide market for trailer hitches is expected to grow at a CAGR of roughly 3 percent over the next five years, increasing from 660 million USD in 2019 to 790 million USD in 2024, according to the “Trailer Hitch Market 2020 Research Report” by 360 Research Reports, a leading source for business intelligence and market research. Additionally, according to the “Global Automotive Tow Bars Market 2019-2023” report by TechNavio, a leading global technology research 16 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2020

The rise of e-Commerce, in combination with a simultaneous increase in delivery services and delivery vehicles, is said to boost the global towing equipment market. “Delivery service agencies opt for light commercial vehicles, which help with prompt delivery services, thus generating opportunities for the global towing equipment market to grow over the forecast period. The increasing trend of online capabilities along with automotive aftermarket services are expected to drive the market,” adds Allied Market Research, a market research and advisory company of Allied Analytics LLP. With certainty, principal aftermarket manufacturers like B&W Trailer Hitches, CURT Manufacturing, Camco Manufacturing, Demco, Hopkins Manufacturing Corporation, Horizon Global, and Weigh Safe will continue to play a pivotal role in innovative product development.

CURT Manufacturing: BetterWeigh™ and Rambler Tow Bar Kicking off this year’s list of top towing products is CURT Manufacturing and its recently debuted BetterWeigh™ Mobile Towing Scale—awarded the Best New Exterior Accessory Product at SEMA 2019. This groundbreaking product features an accelerometer that measures changes in the velocity and pitch of a vehicle. “It uses this data to calculate weights associated with towing and hauling,” explains CURT. “Armed with To w S e n s e ™ technology, BetterWeigh™ wirelessly connects to your Apple or Android phone to display the weight of the vehicle, trailer, cargo/payload, tongue weight, pin weight, weight distribution and trailer brake gain.” Another added benefit is having the ability to compare tongue weight to total trailer weight in order to verify if a trailer is properly loaded. And whether loading or unloading, the app’s truck payload calculator allows users to view how cargo weight is affected in real time. “Essentially, BetterWeigh™ uses measurements of force and acceleration to calculate the weight of your vehicle, trailer, and cargo. With the unit calibrated, it can measure real-time weight while driving or at a standstill, and at any upward or downward grade,” says CURT. Furthermore, the BetterWeigh™ Pin Weight feature operates as a trailer tongue scale for gooseneck and fifth-wheel trailers by ensuring that the vertical load is within the hitch and vehicle’s rated capacities. “An automatic weight distribution calculator verifies that your hitch is set up correctly, eliminating the need for tape measures. The app also takes the guesswork out of brake controller setup by calculating trailer brake gain through the TowSense™ technology and a simple 15-mph startstop test,” explains The Engine Block, an automotive enthusiast blog powered by Keystone Automotive Operations, Inc. Also new in the company’s product lineup is the Rambler Tow Bar. Safe dinghy towing requires a strong, reliable, easy-to-use aftermarket solution. The Rambler is constructed of high-strength steel, yet weighs less than 40 pounds and offers a max capacity of 7,500 pounds. According to CURT, its lightweight design makes the Rambler easy to operate, as do its non-binding latches, auto-locking mechanisms, active slide-resistant arms, and included safety cables. REESE Sidewinder Another well-respected name in towing, REESE recently launched its Sidewinder—a premium pin box designed specifically for short-bed pickups. It enables users to make up to 90-degree-plus turns without exiting the truck, throwing a switch, or even pushing a button. This capability is made possible through a kingpin locking mechanism that moves the pivot position 22-inches rear of the pin box’s attachment point. “By moving the 18 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2020

pivot rearward while keeping the load centred over the axles, the trailer automatically tracks more closely to the truck,” explains REESE. The result is quick, nimble, and worry-free turning. “Better yet, the pivoting pin box makes hook-up possible at any angle. And, with the towing position of the pin box arm locked in line with the truck, you can make full use of the truck bed space. That means, more storage space for fuel tanks, toolboxes, cargo, and more,” adds The Engine Block. Fastway Trailer Products FLASH Integrated Scale Ball Mount A good trailer product is one that provides a high level of convenience. The FLASH Integrated Scale Ball Mount (ISBM) helps users get on the road faster by making it easy to know if the trailer is loaded properly. FLASH ISBM features a mechanical tongue scale built into the ball mount that measures the tongue weight of the trailer load, providing safer, more confident towing. When loading a trailer, the tongue weight should be 10to-15 percent of the total trailer weight. With a properly balanced load, drivers can enjoy improved steering, better braking control, and reduced trailer sway. Stability over trailer sway, any day! Easy height and ball adjustments makes FLASH ISBM the perfect solution for towing multiple trailers, and the aircraft-grade aluminum provides strength and durability. It easily handles the heaviest of loads at about half the weight of comparable steel ball mounts. The FLASH ISBM is designed to fit a 2-in. receiver and includes 2-in. & 2-5/16-in. chrome hitch balls. Consider adding Fastway’s Dual Lock Pack to protect that investment from thieves. EAZ-LIFT 1000-lb Elite Hitch Kit Big investments call for elite gear. CAMCO Manufacturing’s EAZ-LIFT brand has been producing top-notch technology since the ‘50s. If a saggy connection between that big new RV and tow vehicle has you white knuckling at high speeds down the highway, it is time to consider EAZ-LIFT’s 1000-lb Elite Hitch Kit. This weight-distribution hitch balances the load weight between the trailer axle, tow vehicle axle, and the hitch connection, thereby creating a smooth towing experience that eliminates shaking and swaying when passing other vehicles. The kits feature fully assembled U-bolts and chain package pre-installed, hitch ball and sway control ball pre-installed and torqued. Ready-to-use kits come fully assembled for quicker setup. Each kit includes Elite weight-distributing hitch, sway control, sway control ball, 2-5/16-in. hitch ball, and hardware.

Check back next issue for Part Two—how continued innovation at the OEM level is trickling down to the aftermarket, current trends and even more exciting new products.

GMC Sierra Elevation Diesel vs Ram 1500 Limited EcoDiesel Story by Jordan Allan, photos courtesy of FCA Canada and GMC Canada

T

he popularity of pickup trucks in North America is seemingly at an all-time high, which is significant given that the entire automotive industry has seemingly shifted its focus to efficiency and economy. Sure, trucks are more efficient and practical then they have ever been

before, but they are still very large and often feature large V8 engines under the hood, neither of which necessarily produce an economically friendly and fuel efficient vehicle. Without a doubt, electrification is on the way, whether it be in the form of hybrid or full electric, but for now, it appears another, more efficient powertrain option is the focus. Within the last year and change, all three of GM, Ford and Chrysler (FCA) have released or re-released diesel versions of their largely popular halfton full-size truck offerings. Although I’ve yet to drive the Ford version, I was lucky enough to be able to drive a Ram 1500 EcoDiesel and a GMC Sierra diesel on back-to-back weeks and thought it would provide a great opportunity to compare the two and see how they differ. Before I get into any details about each one, it should be noted that although the trucks were essentially very much the same in that they were half-ton pickups with six-cylinder diesel engines, the Ram 1500 was in the Limited model which is the top of the Ram 1500 lineup, while the Sierra I drove was the Elevation model which is the third level out of five models. The amount of luxury added into the Ram 1500 Limited model was very apparent and the better comparison in the GMC lineup would of course be the

ing the grille, side mirrors and top of the rear bumper. As I said, looks are subjective but my guess is, the majority of people would choose the flashier Ram design; if it was me, though, I would go with the slightly more toned-down and rugged design of the Sierra. Inside of these two specific trucks is where the Ram was able to truly shine, highlighted by the incredible 12-in. touchscreen with the Uconnect 4C infotainment system. This screen had amazing resolution, and offers split-screen capability which came in handy quite often. My biggest worry was that a screen that big would take a while to get used to, but this was not the case as everything was laid out nicely and the sheer size of the screen itself made it hard to miss anything. All other aspects of the Ram’s interior felt very luxurious and was more reminiscent of a true luxury car than a truck, and I mean that in the best way possible. The Sierra’s interior was also very well laid-out and quite practical, featuring lots of old-school Denali; however, for the purposes of this article, the Elevation would do just fine. The first thing to look at would be the overall appearance of the trucks, which is tough to compare as this is a completely subjective aspect. I will admit that I was not the biggest fan of this newest fifth-generation of Ram when it was first released, but that has definitely changed over time and I am now able to fully appreciate the bold yet contemporary design Ram has gone for. The black package on our also-black test truck looked incredible and perfectly accented by the LED lights, and the use of any chrome features was eliminated, which is something I am fine with. Although the Elevation model is not at the top of the Sierra lineup as I mentioned, it is probably the model I would first look at based solely on appearance. Our test model had a cool, blueish, light grey colour GMC calls Satin Steel Metallic that featured black accents all round, includ-

smooth or as effortless as the Ram, but it was still very easy to drive and likely feels like a luxury sedan when compared to trucks of the past. Both trucks handled corners well and were able to easily get up to highway speeds when merging, but I have to say the Sierra felt noticeably quicker than the Ram, especially during acceleration. The Sierra felt quite peppy and wanted to break the wheels loose a few times during my rainy test week, while I felt the Ram was a little leggy on acceleration when in comparison. Given that the Ram does boast more torque and very similar horsepower numbers, I found it a little surprising how much slower it felt off the line. This in no way sullied my experience with the Ram, but it was clear the Sierra’s performance was more noticeable.

knobs and dials which is something I, and I’m sure a lot of other people, prefer. It has, of course, a much smaller touchscreen, but again this one was very easy to use. The rest of the interior space also felt quite luxurious but to me it felt more like I was in a truck, which again is not at all a bad thing. High-quality materials are used throughout, the seats were very comfortable and there is just something about a column-style shifter in a truck that I find much more appealing than knobs or buttons. Again, a better comparison inside would be the Sierra Denali model, but even then I would have a hard time believing it would be as stunning as the Ram interior. As you likely know, 2020 marked a new generation for the Ram’s 3.0L turbocharged EcoDiesel V6 that now features a class-leading 480 lb-ft of torque along with 260 horsepower, which together produce a payload

Both trucks feature all of the modern amenities you could want including USB ports, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and even full 110-volt electrical outlets. Each test model had very large back seats that would be as useful for storage and cargo as they would be for passengers. The Ram test model came complete with the RamBox truck bed and factory-installed bed extender. The RamBox is a great idea and provides a secure, safe spot to stow things you don’t want rolling around in your backseat; however, it does sacrifice a good amount of bed space so pick and choose based on your needs there. Although it didn’t have the new, groundbreaking MultiPro tailgate, the Sierra was every bit as practical as the Ram and I’ve always been a huge fan of the steps integrated into each corner of the rear bumper, as it makes getting things in and out of the bed that much easier. It should be noted that both Ram and GMC have made the diesel engine option available on all of the trim models, which is something that was not usually done before and now gives entry-level buyers a chance to enjoy the benefits provided by these engines. The EcoDiesel starts as a $5,800 option when added to the lower Tradesman and Big Horn models, but for normally-equipped V8 models it adds $3,900 to the overall cost. The Duramax engine option in the Sierra 1500 comes in a little cheaper at just a $3,135 premium on all models. Everybody likely has their own idea on what makes a truck great, and for me to sit here and tell you which one is better from my perspective is a pointless exercise. Each of these trucks is truly fantastic in its own right and goes about it differently than the other, which is part of what makes both of them great. One thing that can often help determine which direction to go is the value you feel like you’re getting when purchasing one, but given that the two examples I drove were on very different ends of the spectrum, it’s hard to make that call as well. To put that in perspective, the Ram I drove had a final sticker price of $94,585, while the Sierra came in at $67,613. This is a sizable difference, but I’d be willing to bet that when spec’d right, you can easily get a Sierra Denali model up near $100 grand as well.

of 2,040 lbs. and a towing capacity of 12,560 lbs. Introduced for the very first time in 2020, the also-turbocharged Duramax 3.0L found in the Sierra diesel produces an also-impressive 460 lb-ft of torque and a class-leading 277 horsepower. Although it produces more horsepower, the Sierra falls a little short of the Ram in terms of payload and towing capacity, posting numbers of 1,830 lbs. and 9,100 lbs. respectively. The horsepower-and-torque war has already been very prominent in the heavy-duty diesel-powered trucks offered by the Detroit Big 3, and it looks like this may be the case in the half-ton market as well.

All that being said, at the end of the day it comes down to what you want from your truck and that is something only each individual buyer can know. Both of these trucks were truly enjoyable and I could see myself behind the wheel of either one but luckily for me, this isn’t a decision I have to make in the near future. What a relief!

As is the case with the power numbers, the fuel consumption numbers are very similar as well. The Ram boasts an impressive 11.1L/100 km and 8.0L on the highway for a combined 9.7L/100 km while the Sierra produces an also notable 10.5L/100 km in the city with a 9.1L rating on the highway for a combined 9.9L/100 km. Driving each of the Sierra and the Ram were very different experiences, but each was excellent in its own right. The Ram felt much smoother and drove more like a car than a truck, which is especially handy when navigating tight city streets and parking lots. The Sierra also featured a luxurious and smooth ride but I found it harder to forget I was in a full-size truck which again is not always a bad thing. It may not have been quite as JUNE/JULY 2020 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 27

Time to Buy a New Truck? Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

W

hile we are all dealing with the day-to-day realities of this world-wide pandemic, it may be hard to think further ahead than today – particularly if a new truck was a purchase that you had been planning for this year. Most people faced with the loss of income and employment, and the uncertainty of everyday life, have simply put most purchase decisions on indefinite hold. Looking at new vehicle sales numbers two months into this ordeal bears out this new reality. In March, as we moved towards a state of emergency, year-over-year sales fell almost 50 percent. April followed with a 75-percent plunge. DesRosiers Automotive Consultants, a company that compiles stats on the automotive industry, says that April sales in Canada totaled 45,833 units compared with 180,616 sold in April of last year. DesRosiers says that while its records aren’t complete, it believes the number of new vehicles sold in April is the month’s lowest sales total since 1951. Passenger cars were the hardest-hit, followed by SUVs of all sorts, with trucks somewhat less so. Still, a projection of sales for all of 2020 suggests that the total will be down at least 36 percent from 2019 levels. These sales numbers, real and estimated, easily eclipse the previous record for a monthly drop of 27.7 percent, set in February 2009 amid the worst of the Great Recession. So, while it’s natural for people to severely rein-in personal spending when economic uncertainty hits, for some it may also be an opportunity. 30 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2020

While we are all aware the automotive plants throughout North America are currently shut down, the possible sales opportunities I am thinking of exist not on new product, but on the trucks that are already built and sitting on dealers’ lots. When sales fall like this, dealers who order trucks months ahead of delivery, are now stuck with that inventory. And, even though there are now early announcements of the auto plants getting back to work, where will all those new trucks go? Dealer lots are jammed; how will they take 2020 and 2021 product when they haven’t cleared out the old stuff? These observations of the truck market in pandemic times led me to do an extensive search of the existing inventory on dealer lots for each of the Detroit Big Three. I’m not excluding the Japanese builders, but because they don’t carry HD pickups or have diesel offerings that most buyers gravitate towards, I’ve concentrated on GM, Ford and Ram. Each of these builders has excellent websites where it is possible to search every single truck available on lots

across the country. The number is frankly shocking – who would have believed that three months of bad sales could plug up the pipeline this badly. Now, I’m not telling you anything you couldn’t deduce yourself – and certainly the manufacturers know how dire the circumstances are. That’s why you’ve already seen the countless commercials offering payment assistance, interest-free loans and sizable manufacturer incentives on new purchases. All the builders desperately need you to get back to buying trucks and they are dangling as many carrots as they can even with the pandemic on. And, this is where that opportunity I alluded to comes into play. It’s what I’m calling the 2019 hangover. Much like the painful remorse of the morning after, dealers (through no fault of theirs certainly) are now stuck with these units. All the trucks that they normally would have sold by now are still sitting there. This 2019 hangover is also making it hard for dealers to move their 2020 models – so they need those old ones gone. The manufacturers, too, are giving over-and-above incentives on that old stock so they can sell their dealers new ones. For instance, as just one example, on 2019 Ram HDs there is a no-charge diesel incentive. That’s over $8,000 off, plus add to that the $9,400-off HD program and you are starting with $17,400 off MSRP. With that in your pocket, you can still negotiate and get even more knocked off by the dealer. Ford and GM have similar programs, and depending on the week, there will be more incentives; keep checking back. Frankly, the longer this COVID-19 shut-down continues, the more they will discount the existing stock. So, while economic activity will begin to return soon, it will be gradual and could take quite awhile for us to return to the more normal 1.9 million to two million level of annual sales in Canada. If you were thinking about a new truck, but have put your search on hold, have another look. You might get the deal of the decade and also help get Canada’s economic engine started up again.

Cool Farm Trucks

Gerry Norrish’s pair of 1961 Chevrolet Apache 10 Custom pickup trucks

Story and photos by Cam Hutchins

G

erry Norrish grew up in Chilliwack, BC on a Jersey farm, and was lucky enough to have a cool farm truck to learn to drive in. His Dad bought a 1961 Chevrolet Apache 10 half-ton stepside shortbox pick-up off a neighbour. The truck was only a few years old when his Dad bought it, and it was originally sold at Bill Green Motors, the Chevy dealership in Abbotsford at the time. The truck was pretty basic with a very rudimentary heater, no radio, single-speed windshield wipers with no windshield washer, and a key-locking passenger door, but was ordered with the “Custom” package. Norrish remembers going skiing at Manning Park in high school and having to pull over to clean the windshield so they could keep going. The reverse lights were not factory installed, so they were operated by an under-dash switch. Norrish installed a CB radio in the late ‘70s and even an 8-track under the dash. The truck came with bumper guards but not mud-flaps. Built in December of 1960, the truck has a piece of trim that goes just under the rear window from side to side, “Cab Sail” to “Cab Sail.” This was not part of the 1961 trim packages but maybe they were using up stock they had on hand. It also has chrome window edging that was discontinued in 1961. While driving the truck to High School, Norrish decided to restore it, and in woodworking, he redid the wood in the deck. Work took Norrish away to Alberta and he realized this truck’s sub-par heater was not going to work, so it got delegated to the garage for a while. The truck’s restoration was completed by 1998 and it started to do well at car shows. The paint colour is a new ‘94 GM Dark Green Metallic Teal that is close to the stock colour, probably “Tampico Turquoise Metallic” It was still running the 235 cu. in. inline six-cylinder and a three-on-the-tree manual transmission. After a bit of driving, a four-speed car transmission 38 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2020

was installed with the floor mounted shifter, but it still did not have enough speed. Running a 3.90:1 ratio did not allow enough speed so in went a 2.72:1 gear, but that robbed too much power. The best solution has been going back to the 3.90:1 gear with a 283 cu. in. V8 and two-speed aluminum casting Powerglide. Norrish had a whack of parts to get rid of, and as E-bay was just starting up, he went online. He ended up finding a sweet Eastern Washington truck, so instead of selling his parts, he bought this other truck to throw the parts at! A steal for $1,000 in 2001. The new truck was also a 1961 Apache 10 Custom but with the Fleetside shortbox, and was rust-free. The body side mouldings had been removed and the holes filled, prompting a 6-year hunt for replacement trim pieces that are unique to 1960 and ‘61 trucks. Originally, the short box was two-tone Light Blue with a white roof and white lower flank. Now, it’s painted Sapphire Blue from a new GM vehicle with a Cameo White roof. The truck was finished in 2012 and although it has fairly low miles, the engine turned out to be junk, but not before it had been painted and the

truck finished. His engine guy had a 300-horse 327 that looked like the stock engine. The two-barrel carb was not up to the task, so a tri-power setup was sourced from E-bay and really adds to the look and driveability of the truck. The short-box truck came with two-speed wipers with a window washer, and the optional big back window. Like the stepside, this truck did not come with reverse lights. Now both trucks have disc brakes and dual master cylinders for safety. They both have stock interiors, but upgraded Bluetooth-operated radios that start with stock 1961 AM radios but are converted to modern internals by Woods Radios. Both started life with rubber floor coverings but now have black carpeting. Other similarities of the trucks include the original Southern yellow pine. Both have exotic tropical wood; the stepside has Monkeypod and the Fleetside has Kava wood. Both woods are from Samoa. This series of trucks, known as C10 for two-wheel drive half-ton and K10 for four-wheel drive replaced the 1955-59 Chevy trucks known as the Task Force series. Initially for 1960 and 1961, the previous names were used,

Apache for the lighter models, C10-C40, Vikings for C50-60, and Spartans for the large C70-80. The C10 era brought in more car-like styling with a big panoramic front window, 26-percent larger than previous, small overhanging visors front and back, and independent front suspension. The torsion bars in front and coil springs at the rear offer an incredibly smooth ride. Optional equipment included leaf springs on the rear if desired. The truck was also more user-friendly as it was more than six inches lower overall than the 1959 trucks and had two inches more ground clearance over the I-beam front axles of the Taskmaster series of trucks. The lower body made it easier to reach into the bed of the truck as well. The frame used outer straight sections with an extra “X” brace that made the 1961 chassis ten-times more stiff than the 1959 chassis, allowing for a lower centre of gravity. The great new looks were not the only benefits; the cab was 5-inches wider with 6-inches more hip room, the first truck to sit three full-size adults with comfort. Competing against Ford and Dodge, Chevrolet’s sales for 1960 increased 5.5-percent over 1959, selling 326,195 units. A bit of a depression was going on in 1961, so sales dropped to 306,175 units that year. The trucks cause quite a stir at the many car shows they attend. Based out of Chilliwack means that in a normal summer, there are dozens of car shows within a short drive, but both of these trucks are set-up to be great

Custom Options C

“ ustom” trucks were available in four separate option groups for 1961. Custom Appearance Equipment included a silver anodized aluminum grille and headlight surrounds, chrome-plated windshield reveal mouldings, chrome horn ring on steering wheel, chrome-trimmed knobs on instrument panel and twotoned interior door panels. Custom Comfort and Convenience Equipment included a left-hand armrest, right-side sunshade, left-hand door key lock, chromed cigarette lighter, full-foam rubber seat cushion, and extra insulation. Chrome Bumper Equipment includes front and rear chrome bumpers as well as chrome hubcaps on non-4wd models. Side Trim Moulding is comprised of side trim running from the rear of the front tire all the way back to the rear of the truck to a “Vee” return with red inset at very rear. Available on Fleetside models only. Chevrolet used the term “Fleetside” for the truck with the inner wheel wells and stepside for the narrow box with the external

fenders and a step to gain access to the box right behind the cab. GMC models were referred to as “Wideside” and “Fenderside.” to drive whatever the destination. Quite a change from being farm trucks to ending up on the show circuit, but these old trucks bring back many fond memories for people who attend car shows....lots of people learned to drive on trucks like this or they had Uncles that owned one. That really is not all that strange considering around 3 million of this series of trucks were sold. So when you see these trucks, make sure to stop to chat with the owner to learn more about the trucks and get to know Gerry.....because he always needs another pal to drive his second truck to shows....

The box was double-walled for the lower part of it to ensure if a shifting load dented the inside, it would not damage the outside of the box.. Chevrolet offered the Stepside with three lengths of boxes. The shortbox was 78.5-in., the standard box was 98 and the C30 one-ton was available with a 108.5-in. box. The Fleetsides were not available in the one-ton versions, the 78.5in. short box was only available as a half-ton, and the standard box length was 98-in. for either half-ton or 3/4-ton. FEATURE: RV FUTURE TECH TRENDS

The Smart RV Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturers

T

he RV industry rarely offers new, cutting-edge technology – but, they do know a good idea once they see one. In this case, I’m talking about the new Smart RV; an innovation that lets you check and run systems right from your phone. Following in the footsteps of the auto and home industries, RVs can now communicate with your phone, at a distance, letting you monitor tank levels, control HVAC systems and even retract your awning when you are nowhere near it. Be it Apple or Android, RV builders are installing the interfaces needed to quickly and simply pair your phone with your coach. The advantages are obvious. Here are just some of the systems that are already on the market. AIRSTREAM Using a compatible iOS or Android phone, Airstream lets you monitor your fresh water and holding tank levels with its Smart Control Technology. For the AC & Heat Pump, you can set the perfect temperature before and after your adventures. Your RV’s interior is pleasant and comfortable as you can run the powered vents while you are out. For greater driving safety, Airstream has added a Tire Pressure Monitor System. This real-time monitoring is on all five tires with or without vehicle movement. You can also monitor battery and propane levels. If the wind picks up and you’re away, confidently close the awning to protect your property. If you are out, you can also locate your trailer, using the GPS locator to navigate back to your Airstream. After a long day of hiking, turn on your interior and exterior lights from anywhere for a safe return.

remotely from a phone or tablet. The all-new Dometic IoT Solution allows users to control and monitor their RV’s components with the touch of their finger. Six touchscreens are conveniently located throughout the coach controlling the RV’s lighting, climate control, awnings, water heater and tanks, water pump, batteries, inverter status, and LP Gas. These screens also let RVers customize comfort controls as well as run multiple tasks at once. Scenes can also be automated to run at specific times throughout the day. Behind the scenes, intelligent predictive monitoring provides a forecasted view of the system’s usage indicating when critical resources are reaching their limits. And, of course, the system can be controlled remotely from a smartphone or tablet. As Dometic is an OEM supplier to many RV builders, this Dometic IoT system will no doubt be available across numerous brands.

LEISURE TRAVEL VANS For 2020, the Unity by Leisure Travel Vans is using the Dometic IoT system that features a touch screen that can also be controlled

well as speculating on the possibility of using autonomous vehicle technology with their Galileo camper concept. This concept vehicle is less a camper and more a self-driving apartment on wheels, with a modular camping pod sitting on an electrically-powered flat chassis offering full customization and a relaxing holiday from start to finish for the user. This is a concept, but it’s not out-there Buck Rogers stuff. Everything needed to make this concept a production reality already exists today. KZ Recreational Vehicles has also shown a concept called the Sonic X concept. Along with its parent company Thor Industries, it managed to inject a number of fast-growing trends into a single trailer. The 26-foot concept trailer is aimed at off-grid self-sufficiency, relying on 1,000 amp-hour lithium batteries and 1,000 watts of solar power. It also carries 83 gal. of water, that is run through a water extraction and filtration system to prolong the stay. The company says this trailer can help you live comfortably, whether just outside city limits or hundreds of miles away from the nearest slab of concrete. hand. With the all-new JAYCOMMAND Smart RV System, you can control and monitor your tank levels and some of the most important features and amenities of your RV from virtually anywhere. You can even stay connected to the comforts of your Jayco unit when you’re far from it. Jayco is calling this their “smarter” camping experience! LIPPERT COMPONENTS Lippert is another OEM supplier that has introduced its own system called OneControl. Like the others, this OneControl technology lets RVers control and monitor their many RV systems, all from the unit’s digital touchscreen or on a smartphone. When using the OneControl app with OneControl ConnectAnywhere or OneControl Wireless, you’ll have the internet connectivity needed to run everything like awnings, lighting, auto leveling systems, water tanks and more. These are just some of the Smart Phone enabled systems in use now; a tech direction that will certainly continue to grow going forward. But, as I said off the top, none of this is shockingly new; if anything, the RV industry is simply putting available technology to work as other industries have already done. But that doesn’t mean that they aren’t looking to the future. Consider Erwin Hymer’s self-driving concept - Galileo. German RV builder, Erwin Hymer, is jumping into the electric RV market as

Mercedes-Benz has shown a camping concept called the Marco Polo. This pop-up Class B van was shown with a voice-command control that takes the Smart RV concept to the next level with convenience well beyond current-generation touchscreen and mobile device tech. Imagine arriving on-site and simply saying “Hey Mercedes, I want to relax,” and the van sets itself up, popping the roof, leveling the suspension, deploying the awning and even darkening the tinted glass – no more window shades needed.

RV-ING: NORTHERN LITE BOREAL 23FB

Four-Season Trailer Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Northern Lite

T

he unprecedented COVID-19 shut-down of the country has affected every aspect of our economy – including the RV business as a whole. Because of this I’m unable to currently access units to test or even trucks to tow with. Till this changes I will strive to report on whatever new units I can find enough information on – call them virtual tests. Stay safe everyone. - Howard J Elmer British Columbia based Northern Lite has been building truck campers for over 30 years. Certainly, it’s what the brand is best known for, but this year they are ramping up production on a new travel trailer called the Boreal 23FB. And while I’ll get into the specifics of this new offering shortly here, I want to highlight one design feature that has descended from Northern Lite’s long experience with truck campers. One of the unique build traits of a Northern Lite truck camper is a two-piece fibreglass construction which eliminates unnecessary seams. Over the years, this method has proven to withstand the most extreme weather conditions. Obviously, this is for the benefit of the occupants but aside from that it is the best possible way to avoid internal water damage resulting from leaks. Experienced RVers know (and new RVers should be very aware of) that water is the Number One enemy of your trailer. And, where does water enter an RV? Exterior seams, joints, around windows, vents and through roof sections. Sure, from the factory these are all sealed and caulked, but an RV moves, bends and flexes. It’s subject to heat, cold, humidity, wet weather and UV rays. The stress of road travel and 46 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2020

the environment will wear out that caulking and open those seams; count on it. Even when these joint failures are too small to see, water will find a way – it always does. Worst of all, we are not talking about a “flood” situation; it’s the small amounts of moisture that leach into the trailer walls, roof and floor that start the rot that you’ll only find when it’s well advanced. I’m harping on this because right now, in spring, is the time to make a close inspection of all your trailer seams. You have time – do it now while we can’t camp anyway. And remember, if you’re in doubt as to whether your seams need attention

first is the leak-proof nature of this build, but I also suspect that this cocoon of fibreglass will also lend structural integrity to the trailer and give it a weight reduction (there is no wood in these walls). In fact, Northern Lite claims that there are no other true four-season travel trailers on the market with this level of leak proof hull construction. To keep it comfortable, it offers heated enclosed tanks, R5 insulation and a 30,000 BTU furnace. The Boreal is 23 feet-long and has a good interior height of 6-ft 8-in. It’s also a bit wider than most at 8-ft 4-in. Inside this envelope, you’ll find a large convertible U-shaped dinette, a kitchen with good counter space and 8-cu.ft. refrigerator. The trailer offers 30 Amps of shore power as well as the standard 12V house batteries, which are augmented with two roof-mounted 100-Watt solar panels that constantly trickle-charge those batteries. this season, caulking is cheap compared to opening the roof or walls to make repairs. This line of thinking can (and should) also be applied to new RV purchases. Call it a rule of thumb – fewer seams, less trouble in the future. This two-piece fibreglass construction technique is the first thing Northern Lite applied to its new travel trailer. Northern Lite is calling the Boreal 23FB a four-season trailer, one that’s built for adventure, they say. It starts with this innovative one-piece, seamless body. Well, actually two pieces, but when it’s fused along the belt line of the trailer, you can consider it one-piece and that has obvious advantages. The

In the bright bedroom (with sliding door), you will find a full-sized queen bed, with room to walk around, and ample closet and storage space for clothes and other items. The trailer is set up to sleep four, using the bedroom and the fold-down dinette. In keeping with today’s trends, the bathroom is spacious for a trailer this size. Its layout takes up the full-width of the trailer, at the rear. It features a full-sized shower, high-end cabinetry and a comfortably situated toilet. With a max GVWR of 7,000 lb (4,600 to 5,000 lb wet weight) the Boreal is half-ton towable by all the brands.

Outside features include stabilizer jacks, BBQ gas hook-up, exterior shower with hot and cold water, LED patio awning light, patio awning, powered hitch jack with light, full-size spare tire, LED storage compartment light, HDTV Antenna and hook-ups for cable and satellite. And, while the current renderings don’t show cargo doors, there will be some basement storage and the needed hatches will be on the production models. The roll-out of Boreal has been interrupted by the current COVID-19 shut-downs. But Northern Lite marketing manager, Brad Trites, says that they are working and expect to have models moving out to Canadian dealers by August. So, while pricing is not yet set, Trites says that the Boreal 23FB will probably cost in the $60,000 range. Trites also said that as interest in this initial offering has been strong, Northern Lite is already working on expanding the model lineup. Stay tuned.
