Ford F-150 Adds Class Exclusive Onboard Scales and Smart Hitch
T
his summer Ford is set to debut some new, class-exclusive tech features to the all-new 2021 F-150 half-ton pickup. First, newly available Onboard Scales measure and display the approximate weight of the payload in the truck and displays it on the centre touchscreen with a graphic representation of the truck, on a mobile phone through the FordPass app or in graphics with the truck’s smart tail lamps. The Smart tail lamps operate like the battery charge indicator on a cell phone and display the percentage of payload capacity by illuminating LEDs arranged in a vertical bar. Next up is the also class-exclusive Smart Hitch which measures the tongue weight of a trailer being connected which helps the user distribute trailer weight correctly. After the trailer is set up in the centre touch screen, the new feature provides guidance on weight distribution or hitch overloading on the screen, app or the smart tail lamps. Finally, the 2021 F-150 will offer available continuously controlled damping for enhanced ride and handling characteristics, especially when towing or hauling heavy loads. 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro Will Increase Off-Road Performance The 2022 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro will see an increase in off-road performance with an all-new taller suspension lift of 28mm up front and 13mm at the rear. It will still employ TRD-tuned FOX internal bypass shocks that are designed to perform both on- and off-road, and the increased lift will improve obstacle clearance thanks to its 36.4-degree approach angle, 24.7-degree departure angle and a 26.6-degree breakover angle. Complementing the increased front lift will be new TRD-engineered upper control arms that feature machine-forged aluminum construction for added strength and will allow the FOX shocks to make use of the additional rebound stroke afforded by the lift by adjusting the angle of the ball-joint mount. GMC Hummer EV Begins Off-Road Testing on Moab Trails

The upcoming 2022 GMC Hummer EV has officially began its off-road testing as the world’s first all-electric supertruck goes through its paces on challenging trails near Moab, Utah. The new Hummer will be introducing and perfecting a number of the latest off-road technologies and aids and what better setting to do it than what many consider the off-road mecca of the USA. Some of the more notable examples include the available Terrain Mode, part of the GMC Hummer EV’s Drive Mode Control, which will offer two braking calibrations, with a mild braking option for two-foot driving and a purpose designed One-Pedal Driving control in low-speed off-road driving. This technology enables the driver to accelerate and decelerate using only the accelerator pedal which uses unique calibrations for speed-limited off-road driving to help better negotiate steep grades and rock crawling. Available Extract Mode enables Adaptive Air Suspension height to be raised approximately 6-in. in order to take on extreme off-road situations such as large boulders or water forging. We will be sure to keep you updated as we get closer and closer to a release date. Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2021

Something Special Ford has unveiled the all-electric F-150 Lightning
Story by Gerry Frechette, photos courtesy of Ford Canada
T
he age of the mass electrification of the world’s vehicles is upon us. It seems that not a week goes by that there isn’t a new hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or battery electric vehicle introduced, and this year and next will see several half-ton pick-ups, a few from manufacturers new to the truck market, joining the EV party.
The stakes are rather high; pick-ups are the best-selling vehicles in North America, and all the manufacturers need to hit the ground running, as it were, with their new offerings. None more so than Ford, whose F-150 is the long-time top seller in the truck segment. Truck buyers want power and capability, and a vehicle without an internal combustion engine will need to be something special. An F-150 with hybrid drivetrain is already in showrooms, and has had good reviews. Ford recently took the wraps off the new F-150 Lightning, powered by electricity only, and there is no shortage of features to entice traditional F-150 customers. As with any EV, the day-to-day operation of the vehicle is all about the numbers – how long it takes to charge the batteries enough to yield a given distance. With the optional Extended Range Battery (which, incidentally, generates 563 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque from the twin motors, making this the fastest F-150 ever), the standard 80-amp / 240-volt Charge Station Pro home charging station and the built-in dual onboard charging system (doubling the speed), the Lightning adds an average range of 48 km per charging hour, fully charging it from 15-100 percent in about eight hours. Maximum range is estimated to be 483 km. Out on the highways of North America, plugged into a 150kilowatt DC fast charger that is becoming prevalent, the extended-range F-150 Lightning is targeted to receive up to 87 km of range in 10 minutes, and charge from 15-80 percent in about 41 minutes. Do the math, and you’ll conclude that you will have to stop an average of 10 minutes each hour travelled, on a long trip, assuming an available charger, which the Lightning’s system will help you find. With Ford Intelligent Backup Power, the Lightning will power your home in the event of a major power failure, off-loading up to 9.6 kilowatts of power, for at least three days, and longer if the power is rationed to essential functions. In the future, this system will enable the Lightning to power a house every day during the grid’s high-cost, peak-energy hours, while charging itself during the lower-cost overnight hours.
12 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2021
Maybe a house is more than you need powered by the Lightning. With enhanced Pro Power Onboard, customers can take advantage of 11 (10-120V, 1-240V) built-in electrical outlets to directly power a variety of tools, electronics and appliances away from home. That same 9.6 kW of power is available through the outlets, making the Lightning right at home at the jobsite or campsite. Four of those outlets are located in what used to be the engine compartment, now called a front trunk, or “frunk.” Finally, an F-150 comes from the factory with a secure, lockable space protected from the elements. This spacious area targets 400 litres of volume and 400 pounds of payload – enough to stow two carry-on bags and one checked bag, or two sets of golf clubs. This water-resistant space also comes equipped with two USB chargers and a drainable floor that can double as a food and beverage container. Aside from all the cool EV capabilities, the Lightning has a bunch of tech features. Ford will deploy standard over-the-air software updates – called Ford Power-Ups – to improve the technology experience, add new features and fix issues without trips to the dealership. As part of available Ford Co-Pilot360™ technology, BlueCruise allows for true hands-free driving on more than 160,000 km of pre-qualified divided highways in the U.S. and Canada.
Tow/Haul. Underbody protection keeps the battery safe, with metal skid plates shielding both the battery and inboard motors from tough terrain. The battery itself is secured inside a waterproof casing surrounded by crash-absorption protection. Debuting on Lightning is available Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, which automatically controls steering, throttle and brake inputs to make hitching trailers even easier. It is also the first F-150 to have independent rear suspension, for a more comfortable and controlled ride. The Lightning targets a maximum 2,000 pounds of payload in the standard-range model and a maximum 10,000 pounds of available towing capacity on XLT and Lariat trucks with the extended-range battery and Max Trailer Tow Package. The F-150 Lightning arrives in select Ford showrooms in Spring 2022, and preliminary pricing puts the commercial-oriented entry model at $58,000 MSRP, while the XLT model starts at $68,000 and goes up from there.
Also available is Onboard Scales, which uses the truck’s sensors to estimate payload and tell customers how much they’re hauling. And since payload can impact range, Onboard Scales is integrated with Intelligent Range to help ensure F-150 Lightning gives an accurate estimate of how far you can go. Given this is still a pick-up and an F-150, the Lightning had to be as strong and capable as any other model. Thanks to its two motors, it is a 4x4, with four selectable drive modes: Normal, Sport, Off Road and JUNE/JULY 2021 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 13

The Skinny: If you suggested Toyota’s motto when it comes to their trucks is ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,’ I’m not sure you’d have much pushback, as they seem to prefer taking their time designing a new model and then slowly perfect it with small upgrades and improvements over a longer time period than most manufacturers. This is definitely evident with the mid-size Tacoma pickup as it is still in its third generation after debuting as the Toyota Pickup back in 1995. The current generation began in the 2016 model year and looks to be well on its way to a 10-plus year run as its predecessor did. This does come with a risk of getting stale over time, but when your trucks are as revered and flat-out good as Toyota’s, that isn’t the case in most people’s eyes. The Tacoma is sold in many different trim levels and packages to offer something for everyone, and I recently spent some time behind the wheel of the new Nightshade edition, which currently lists as the model at the top of the lineup. Although it is essentially the same truck as the off-road-oriented TRD Pro model, the Nightshade edition is a bit of a different experience. It has a sleeker, more streamlined look that is little more eager to put the emphasis on luxury and upscale rather than ruggedness and capability. That being said, the Nightshade would still be quite capable off-road, albeit slightly less than a TRD version. Inside offers a few things not found on all the TRD Off-Road or Pro models, such as standard premium black leather, a 7-speaker JBL audio system and moonroof, to name a few. Outside, the truck lives up to the Nightshade name with many blacked-out features such as grille, mirrors, door handles, exhaust tip and Tacoma badging. The on-road characteristics are a little better in the Nightshade edition thanks to tuned-down suspension and an all-season tire rather than a more knobby all-terrain, but again, everything else is essentially the same. Although it’s maybe not as refined as some of its competitors, the Tacoma offers a generally smooth ride and, thanks to its size, is very manoeuvrable in the city and easy to park in tight spots. The sightlines are good, the backseat is big enough and the climate and infotainment controls use actual knobs and dials, which is definitely preferred in my eyes. The 8-in. multimedia touchscreen features dynamic navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and is very easy to figure out, while a Qi wireless smartphone charge pad is found in front of the shifter.
Pros: Though I truly do enjoy driving the Tacoma’s competitors, there is just something about this truck that draws me and, if you pay attention to just how many you see on the road daily, others to it. It probably has something to do with proven off-road capability, a very sharp looking exterior design and just the sheer fact that it is a Toyota, so you know that it will last as long as you want it to. Bonus note here, the Tacoma actually still does offer a manual transmission which I know many are big fans of. Cons: What I say here pretty much goes for just about every midsize truck available today, the biggest con being the price. They are great trucks and ideal for those who want the practicality of a pickup without the sheer size of full-size models, but it could be hard to justify paying the same for a mid-size model as you could for a full-size truck. The Verdict: Pricing aside, and simply put, the Tacoma is a great truck and is everything you’d want out of a mid-size pickup. It looks great, is extremely practical and is small enough that it would still make sense to own one if you lived in a big city but needed the capability of a truck. Again, due to its life cycle, it may lack the refinement of some of its competitors, but it still remains the benchmark for mid-size pickups and will probably remain that for a long time.

Meeting the Demand
2021 Ram ProMaster Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of Stellantis Canada
I
n the commercial van market, the ProMaster by Ram is unique with its front-wheel drive (FWD) system. With its transversely-mounted front engine, it offers reduced overall weight and complexity by locating all components beneath the cab. This also means that the chassis cab model has a completely clean deck back of the cab. This benefits upfitters in countless ways – all of which improve aftermarket design and offer cost savings. This FWD setup also keeps the cargo-load floor height and step-in height low. This trait alone is one that is much appreciated by an operator who is getting in and out of the van all day long. Another advantage to the FWD system is traction. It’s always better to pull than
push in slippery situations – like in snow. Improved traction comes from having the powertrain weight on top of the front wheels. The overall result of this design for ProMaster is a purpose-built, highly customizable van body that is unique among its competition. It’s designed to meet the demands of commercial customers and upfitters. So, ProMaster has been selling in Canada for the past five years now; however, it’s worth noting that it is a cousin of the Fiat Ducato van. This very common van has sold over 4.5 million units throughout Europe over the last 30 years. The ProMaster we now have in Canada is descended from this van. Mind you, this is a common thread among the other van providers. MB’s Sprinter and Ford’s Transit both originated in Europe. The key difference is that most of the old-world vans are diesel-powered while the Canadian version of the ProMaster uses the 3.6L Pentastar V6 gas engine as its standard powerplant (280hp & 260 lb-ft of torque). It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Also, of note for 2021 – the diesel option is no longer available. The Pentastar V6 is now the sole powertrain. Competition in this delivery segment is brisk, and while vans don’t change much year-to-year, each manufacturer keeps looking for customer advantages. Frankly, it makes sense. If you wonder about the value of this market to the manufacturers, consider that the commercial van market in North America can consume as many as 325,000 units a year. The ProMaster is built on three different wheelbase lengths – 118, 136 and 159-inches. The cargo van body comes with either a low or high roof. As for GVWR, it is offered as 1500, 2500 and 3500 series vehicles. In all, ProMaster can be ordered in any one of 18 different configurations. This includes a Chassis Cab Cutaway on the 3500-series version. In addition to the cargo van models, ProMaster can also be ordered as a passenger window van.

ProMaster has (and continues to claim) certain best-in-class features: • Standard V6 horsepower • Turning diameter • Standard interior cargo height • Load-floor height • Cargo width between wheel wells • Maximum cargo width For 2021 there are also a few new standard features, such as: • Crosswind Assist is now standard equipment and helps the driver stay on course while driving in windy conditions • A range of new safety options are available on 2021 Ram ProMaster, including Blind-spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path detection, Forward Collision Warning with Emergency Brake Assist and ambient/courtesy lights • Class-exclusive digital rear-view mirror is available to replace the traditional rear-view mirror with a 9.2-inch-wide LCD monitor • A new factory-installed trailer hitch option was new in 2020 – but is worth mentioning. It increases the max tow rating to 6,800 lb.
Pricing for the ProMaster 2021 model year: The base ProMaster 1500 cargo van starts at $40,640. The 2500 cargo van jumps by $2,000 while the 3500 adds another $1,500. The passenger window vans start at $46,640. The ProMaster 3500 Cutaway starts at $37,640.
Lastly, (late availability this year) is a monitoring system called Ram Telematics. This will be of interest to Fleet Managers. Also, Mopar offers an Electronic Vehicle Tracking system as well. A new standard item on ProMaster now is a speed limiter. This is activated by the dealer and can be set at 100, 105, 110 or 120 km/h. ProMaster is becoming popular with upfitters, either as a chassiscab with clean frame rails, or as a van body suited to institutional purposes. To that end, Ram is offering Prep Packages targeted at specific vocations. For instance, Ambulance. They also offer the same prep for Recreational Vehicle builders. Also available from the factory is an interior cargo shelf group. This option requires the cargo partition installed.

Properly Luxurious
2021 Cadillac Escalade Story by Dan Heyman, photos by Dylan King
I
think it’s safe to say at this point that the Cadillac Escalade is legendary. That may seem a little hasty; after all, we’re not talking about a Porsche 911 or Chevrolet Corvette here -- cars that have been around for many decades -- but a vehicle that’s been around for just over two decades. What it’s managed to achieve in that time, though, is incredible. It’s one of the highest sellers at Cadillac along with the XT5, and it has achieved almost godlike status among rappers and movie stars; Tony Soprano
drove one, after all! You could make the argument that it, almost singlehandedly, kept Cadillac on the map through some lean years. Now, though, Cadillac is coming off its best sales ever in Canada, and it’s celebrating by releasing an all-new Escalade that manages to move the bar even further. That’s no easy task considering how good it was, but Cadillac has pulled it off – just not necessarily in the way you might think. Typically, when a new SUV like this gets launched, you’re expecting a big powertrain adjustment that, in this day and age, is likely electrified. Except, even though they did have an Escalade Hybrid from ’08-’13, there’s none of that here. Instead, they’ve kind of gone to the opposite end of the fuel-saving spectrum with a diesel engine joining the 6.2-litre V8 with cylinder deactivation technology that returns from the previous model. The latter, meanwhile, is the engine I had in my tester. We’ll talk more about this lux-truck’s powertrain in a moment, but now, we turn to what really differentiates the latest Escalade from the previous model – its front-end styling, and its interior. Ask any car designer, and nine times out of 10, they’ll say that pickups and full-size SUVs are some of the toughest vehicles to make unique when it comes to styling. After all, you need to make sure they can haul as many people in as much comfort as possible – that’s how these vehicles have become the best alternative to minivans – and a basic two-box shape is the best way to do that. That leaves the front and rear fascias, the wheels (which, it has to be said, look a little chintzy on my tester even though they do measure 22-inches), and that’s about it when it
26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2021
comes to opportunities for uniqueness. So, what Cadillac’s done for 2021 is eschewed the vertical headlights that have been an Escalade staple since its inception, in favour of some horizontal items that are more inkeeping with the XT6 that debuted just a year before. Might not sound like much, but even with the return of the big Caddy grille, you know that this Escalade is an evolution. Oh, and they still have the full-height taillights, also an Escalade staple and one that they’d have been loathe to change. So they didn’t, though they are a little edgier than previous. While that all may be evolutionary, the interior is more of a revolution and that boils down to one significant feature – the infotainment system. In researching this article, I felt like I found more Youtube videos on the infotainment system – officially called the OLED system – than the vehicle itself. That’s because this thing is absolutely spectacular. From its curved screen, to its nested displays, to its 38 inches of display area, this is a futuristic tour de force that will have anybody likening Cadillacs to old-money luxury think twice. The display itself showcases your infotainment, your gauge cluster, augmented reality navigation (whereby a look at the gauge cluster displays an image of what you’re seeing through the windshield, just with added animations and symbols to guide you along your route), and night vision (unavailable if too much ambient light is sensed) so that almost every base is covered. Even the touch-sensitive buttons either side of the gauge cluster don’t bother me as controls of this type typically do; it all flows so seamlessly and slickly that it’s a pleasure to operate. If that’s not enough for you, there’s also a heads-up display and digital rear-view mirror. Which, it should be mentioned, seems a little small considering this truck’s vast environs. This is, if not the best system available, anywhere, one of the top five for sure. The rest of the cockpit is typical Caddy fare; rich materials abound – my tester is the top spec Platinum version, after all – and the panel gaps are all nice and tight and small. The leather seating, meanwhile, which is finished in dark maroon with a beautiful, tiled pattern on the seats, is top class and looks almost like hardened clay – or a Moscow Mule tumbler. Whatever suits your fancy. The second row is roomy enough – and each individual captain’s chair can slide fore and aft – but the bottom cushions are a little on the flat side. That’s only really an issue, of course, through fast turns which is not something I imagine most Escalades will be spending much time on. While the rear exterior styling may not have changed too much, the rear seats have and it has everything to do with the rear suspension. What used to be a solid axle with five-link setup has been swapped for a more compact fully independent set-up which means the third row of seating can be mounted lower and further back, providing more room overall. It has become a properly usable third row, now, and that is a great bo-
nus for the overall ownership experience. Add the fact that there’s also self-levelling air suspension and magnetic dampers, and you have one comfortable cruiser. It’s such an event, this thing, before you start even moving that it almost seems cursory to talk about the performance aspects of it – but we will, of course. Power from the 6.2L V8 comes in at 420 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque, sent to all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic, operated by an electronic shift lever and not the button select system that the Chevy Tahoe/Suburban and GMC Yukon get. Not sure why that is, but it is. Being a naturally-aspirated ‘plant with a close-ratio gearbox, the response from throttle tip-in is almost instantaneous, encumbered mainly by the fact that this thing weighs over 2,500 kilos. Once you get past that inertia, though, the powertrain is a buttery smooth one, moving you along at a mighty clip that’s befitting of a big V8 like this. You just get the sense that there’s a deep well of power that you never really get to the bottom of. Not legally, anyway. Surprisingly, for such a large vehicle, the steering is actually quite reactive, responding to inputs with grace. In fact, there’s so much response that you’re glad to have the self-levelling suspension doing its thing because if not, you get the sense that the body would be rolling all over the place since so much turn-in comes from even moderate steering inputs. Again, though, this is all secondary to the fact that this latest Escalade is a properly luxurious, pampering and powerful take on Caddy’s most famous of SUVs, and you can be sure that once again, this Escalade’s going to have legions of fans. And so it should.

Another Option The 2022 Ford Maverick Debuts
Story by Dan Heyman, photos courtesy of Ford Canada
W
hile the 2022 Ford Maverick is an all-new truck, perhaps more significant is the fact that it’s one of the harbingers of what’s becoming an all-new – well, revitalized, anyway – segment in the truck world: the compact truck segment. Manufacturers have been trying to build something here for awhile; it’s a segment that’s been touted as a real alternative to CUVs and SUVs, as opposed to work trucks such as the Ford F-150 or Chevrolet Silverado. I say “revitalized” because the trucks that manufacturers have hitherto delivered – think Ford Ranger, Jeep Gladiator or Chevrolet Colorado -- are still too big, too ungainly to really speak to someone considering a small crossover or SUV. With the exception of the Toyota Tacoma, there hasn’t been a huge amount of traction there; there’s nothing wrong with the vehicles themselves, it’s just that manufacturers needed to think…smaller. So what to do, then? Well, use a platform shared with CUVs, of course! Which is what Ford’s done with the Maverick, and what Hyundai’s also done with the upcoming Santa Cruz.
The Maverick arrives based on the Bronco Sport CUV (which itself shares many bits with the Escape) and comes in three trims, starting at $25,900 – XL, XLT and Lariat – and standard with a hybrid powertrain good for 162 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque with front-wheel drive. That can be upgraded to a 2.0-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo (250 hp, 277 lb-ft) that also adds AWD. Transmission duties are handled by an eCVT in the hybrid and eight-speed automatic in the non-hybrid. If you’re looking for better performance off-road, there’s an available FX4 package that provides all-terrain tires, off-road focused drive modes, more underbody protection and different suspension tuning. The AWD version can tow up to 4,000 lbs. with the heavy tow package, while the hybrid is no slouch in this regard as it can tow 2,000 lbs., which is the same as the gas truck can tow if you don’t opt for the tow package. It comes only as a four-door cab (that’s larger inside than the Escape) and with a 4.5-foot bed. According to Ford, the goal was to offer the manoeuvrability and fuel economy of a smaller vehicle, but with the capabilities of a pickup. Indeed, it sounds like that’s what’s required if they hope to reach those customers that had previously been looking at more common vehicle segments for their next purchase. “We absolutely expect we’ll be seeing customers coming from small hatchbacks or utilities,” said Trevor Scott, marketing manager for Ford Maverick and Ranger. Which has been the goal for quite some time, but it’s been awhile since they’ve cut their small pickup so close in size to the CUV on which it’s based, though the Maverick does have a longer wheelbase and has a taller maximum height than does the Escape, and is both longer overall and has a longer wheelbase than the Bronco Sport. What’s interesting is that it’s actually quite similar in size to the Ranger before it evolved into the comparative behemoth that it is today. Style-wise, it is unique from both the Bronco and Escape, what with its huge LED headlamp
28 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2021
Inside, it’s a thoroughly modern affair centred around an eight-inch touchscreen that gets both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. You can pair up to ten devices to the on-board WiFi hotspot, while the FordPass app allows you to check fuel levels, unlock the doors and more. Right alongside and above the display, however, are storage cubbies to maintain the image that this is also a truck meant to easily haul people and their wares. There’s also underseat rear storage big enough for basketballs, roller blades or laptop bags as well as what Ford calls a
lenses and unique grille that gets bisected by twin chrome strips. ‘Round back, its taillight lenses are actually quite Bronco-esque, while the way “Maverick” is stamped across the entirety of the tailgate reminds of the F-150. Unlike the Santa Cruz, though, the Maverick looks much more the small pickup as opposed to the Hyundai, which somehow looks more like a Tucson crossover that’s had its rear cabin area lopped off. Different strokes, we suppose. Speaking of the pickup bed: Ford calls it “Flexbed,” and they say it’s the most innovative pickup bed they’ve ever created, as it comes with all the fixins: 12V power outlet, multi-position tailgate, two 2x6 storage pockets, threaded bed holes for do-it-yourself installation of bed add-ons, as well as optional 110V power and two additional storage cubbies. There’s even a tailgate cleat that doubles as a bottle opener, if that’s your kind of jam. “Surprising levels of capability,” said Chris Mazur, chief engineer for Maverick “was explicit for this program.” So it should come as no surprise that the bed is as usable as it is.
FIT – “Ford Integrated Tether” -- slot mounted to the rear of the centre console that can accommodate an array of accessories, from an extra cupholder, to more storage, chord organizer or double grocery hook. Above that, we find a 120V outlet and two USB ports of both the USB-A and USB-C variety. Top trims get niceties like two-tone leather seating and other interior panels, to ensure that if you are using this as more of a daily driver, it’s got the creature comforts that suggest you can. Could this really be the pickup’s path into the world of the all-conquering CUV? We shall soon see, but we like its chances.

ost domestic truck enthusiasts are familiar with GMC’s upscale Denali trim, offered on several models, which adds a touch of luxury to everyday driving. The AT4 designation is a little less known, recently expanded across the lineup to give customers seeking a bit more off-road credibility yet another option. Enter the first-ever Yukon AT4. Based on the 2021 fifth-generation Yukon that shares the same T1 platform as the Chevrolet Tahoe as well as the Cadillac Escalade, having tested all three I can confirm they all possess a classy feel, in varying degrees of course. “GMC Yukon is the full-size premium SUV that’s made to be used,” says Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global Buick and GMC, in a press release. “The new Yukon delivers what customers value most – premium features, purposeful technology and all-terrain capability.” One of the immediately noticeable exterior similarities between the aforementioned trio of vehicles are the powered assist steps (included in the $9,795 Premium Plus Package) programmed to deploy whenever a door is opened, useful for the tall sport utility measuring 1,943 millimetres in height. Very un-Escalade however is all the protective skid plating and chunky 20-inch Goodyear allterrain tires. Instead of all the chrome and polish of the Denali, the AT4 employs a darker approach with a blacked-out and horizontally slatted grille and smoked LED headlamp housings — contrasting brilliantly against the White Frost Tricoat paint colour on the example we drove. A pair of bright red recovery hooks peeking out at the bottom of the front bumper and special badging on the doors complete the unique exterior highlights. 34 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2021

Given the vehicle’s off-road-ready looks, one might expect a spartan interior space. This is not the case, as our press loaner had three rows of seats swathed in Jet Black perforated leather underneath a large, dual-pane panoramic sunroof. In addition, a benefit of the Yukon’s 145-millimetre-longer length is not only a massive 66 percent gain of cargo space behind the back bench, thanks to some clever design, but 41 percent extra leg room (now 886 millimetres) in front of it as well. RV-ING: FLAGSTAFF MICRO LITE 21 FBRS
Well-Appointed Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
T
he Flagstaff brand has been around since the ‘70s. Ownership has changed, but its place in the market really hasn’t – it’s a premium brand, and with that distinction comes a premium price. On a recent cold April day, I reviewed one of Flagstaff’s trailers - the Micro Lite 21 FBRS, a couple’s trailer. Young couple, old couple – it matters not. This well-appointed, well laid-out, unit is made for two. But before we do a walk-through, I want to expand on the concept of “premium.” We all know that two like-sized trailers can have very different prices and when both (on the dealer’s lot) appear bright, shiny and new, how do you spot where the extra money went?
also insulate the underbelly and slide-out floors with radiant foil for further protection. The underbelly of the trailer is totally enclosed – for insulation as well as protection for the electronically-controlled heated holding tanks. These are just some of the individual items that go into the trailer build. If you weren’t told they were included, you wouldn’t know, because you can’t see them. These add value and they cost – but for livability and longevity, it’s money well spent. Another item to consider is the outer envelope of the trailer. Micro-Lite has an aluminum-supported radius roof. This creates an interior vaulted
Some upgrades are obvious – such as quality of fixtures and appliances. Others are more invisible – such as build quality. For instance, the Micro Lite uses a six-sided aluminum framework (side walls, end wall, front, floor and roof). Under the flooring is 5.8-in. tongue and groove subfloor (no particleboard). There is also non-slip internal insulation in the trailer – R-7 in the side wall, R-12 in the floor and R-14 in the ceiling. This is all good, but they JUNE/JULY 2021 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 37
ceiling and also sheds water better. On that roof they use a vinyl/rubber composite roofing membrane. A word to the wise here – the quality of the trailer roof should be your number one concern; water entry will kill a trailer in short order. A good roof is the first defence. Good roof material (and regular maintenance and caulking) is a good investment. The second weather-related concern is the walls. The least number of seams is what you want. Again, Micro-Lite accomplishes this with a vacuum-laminated fibreglass wall called Azdel. Azdel is sealed tight and will not rot. Now, these items are not unique to Flagstaff or Micro-Lite. For this review, it’s an example – but one that you can use as a yard-stick when searching for a new trailer. The key thing to remember is that if you think the price is high – ask the dealer to explain where the money is. Most likely, it’s in the build quality which, as I said, is often invisible. As a couple’s trailer, this 22-footer is towable by a wide variety of vehicles. On the day of the test, we actually towed it with two different mid-size trucks - the 2021 Toyota Tacoma and the 2021 GMC Canyon. These are both V6-powered and have tow limits in the 6,000 lb. range. They both handled the trailer nicely on highway and byway. But, with a gross weight of around 5,500 lb., the MicroLite can also be towed by many mid-size and up SUVs - vehicles you may already own.
glass cover. Below it is a 21-inch gas oven. However, there is also a built-in microwave above the range hood. It’s nice to have both – hope you like to cook.
Inside, this single slide unit puts the bathroom in the rear corner and the refrigerator beside it. This opens up the space for a large shower with skylight in the corner – and the fridge placement provides for considerable counter space in the kitchen. A nice feature I noted right off is the three-burner HO gas range with a flush-mount
The other unique feature that jumps out on entry is the lack of a dinette. No booth – nothing free-standing. Instead, the space in the slide that is often used for a dinette is instead taken up with a full-sized convertible couch. A portable table (with folding legs) is provided instead. It can be set up in front of the couch for meals and

then stored away, opening up this centre space. In fact, the table is so light and easy to move that I’m sure many owners will take it outside to set up under the awning. Being connected is no longer a novelty in trailers – it’s a must. Flagstaff provides cable and satellite hookups as well All-In-One Wi-Fi booster and LTE prep with Antenna. The trailer also comes pre-wired for a rear observation camera and has been prepared for roof and side solar panels. The Queen-bed in the trailer is surrounded by windows and cabinets. It’s nice to see that there is access from both sides, and the foot of the bed lifts to reveal a large comforter storage chest. I also realized as I went through the trailer that almost everything I was looking at was part of a package that was standard on this model. Here is a short list of the highlights. • Laminated Champagne Fibreglass Sidewalls • 35K BTU on Trailers over 21 ft • Azdel Composite Panels • Pleated Night Shades • Murphy Bed w/ Under Sofa Storage System w/ Outside Access • Sink Covers • Rear Ladder • Two 30-lb Gas Bottles w/ Molded Bottle Cover • Molded Fibreglass Front Cap w/ Automotive Windshield • Four Frame-Mounted Manual Stabilizer Jacks • Solid Surface Kitchen Countertops • 13.5K BTU Ducted Air Conditioner This is a nicely appointed unit – inside and out. It’s well laid out, has a feeling of quality and it tows well. If you are in the market; have a look. And, I also did a video walk-through of this unit – I invite you to come over to the Truck King YouTube channel to check it out.
