GMC to Offer Off-Road AT4X Trim on Canyon Mid-Size Truck GMC recently released a teaser image previewing the upcoming GMC Canyon AT4X model that they hope will set a new standard in premium off-road performance. This will become the second model in GMC’s lineup to adopt the AT4X trim after the Sierra, and will be part of the next-generation of the Canyon mid-size truck set to be revealed later this year. The AT4X trim will likely build upon the already available AT4 trim that features a 1-in. suspension lift, off-road rocker panel protection, and front and mid skid plates. The image shows off the Canyon’s AT4X badging as well as rock protectors and 17-in. beadlock-capable wheels. We will be sure to keep you informed as more information is made available.

Breath of Fresh Air The all-new Ford Maverick compact pickup truck
I
f ever there was a time to talk about a truck with “Maverick” in its name, it would probably be now, right? As long as Top Gun: Maverick continues to fill theatres and rake it in at the box office, this truck is as pertinent a vehicle as you can get. Of course, the Ford Maverick is about a lot more than just a popular Hollywood connection. Especially considering that its not the Ford Maverick, but the Ford Bronco that actually makes an appearance in the film – but we digress. Or do we? The Bronco also matters here to a degree in that the Maverick does share a platform with a truck that also has “Bronco” in its name, though it’s accompanied by “Sport” as it’s Ford’s smaller unibody offering that does work beneath the Maverick’s surprisingly appealing skin.
Story and photos by Dan Heyman
That means that the Maverick (available as a hybrid with FWD as seen here, or powered by an EcoBoost 2.0L with AWD) is something that has its tires in two camps: the pickup camp, but also the crossover camp as you could see it potentially wooing some prospective crossover buyers away, as they may want a more utilitarian body style, just not one that rides like a truck. Whether or not that goal is achieved is something we will delve into later on. Styling-wise, I was surprised by how much I was struck by the Maverick when I first saw it in person. The front fascia looks a little outlandish in photos, but when seen “in the metal”, the big headlights and taillights, the blacked out grille and the gunmetal wheels all complement each other. Even the paint, which is called “Area 51” but what I like to call “battleship grey” works well. Various custom builds of the Maverick are already starting to appear online, and I can see why. It may have a boxy shape, but boxy is ‘in’ these days and Ford is looking to capitalize on that. The one thing I might change is the wheels, as the base XL model gets a wicked set of “steelies” that works so well here. While none of the three wheel choices on the mid-grade XLT model seen here include those steelies, I’m sure if you played nice with your dealer, you could work something out. Inside, the environs are definitely utilitarian upon first blush. The seats are finished in two shades of grey straight out of the Roots sweatpants catalogue, the dash is a square, upright affair, the steering wheel is a basic three-spoke unit

and the dual analogue gauges behind it are pretty standard (but can be upgraded to an all digital affair), and there are precious little buttons and knobs to clutter the dash. Some of what you see – the speckled grey dash insert, for example -- is fabricated from recycled materials, which is nice. Look more closely, however, and more details start to emerge - the orange highlights, for example. The seat stitching is finished in orange, as are a number of panels and the storage bins. The bins at the base of the centre stack, meanwhile, are given a somewhat tacky coating so anything you store there – sunglasses, smartphones, Nutri-Grain bars, wallets – won’t slide around too much. The area also doubles as a wireless charge pad on Lariat models. You’ll also find some of the orange tacky stuff on the inside of the door pulls. Door pulls that, at first glance, seem to come to an abrupt end. They are a little awkward to use at first, but they do serve a purpose. Being a small truck, the Maverick doesn’t have the massive door cards
the Ranger or F-150 trucks do, so in an effort to maximize storage there, they’ve cut the door pull short so you can more easily store a tall water bottle there. Forget small vehicles; there are many larger vehicles that could take a lesson here. In back, you won’t find a huge amount of legroom (the Maverick is available only as a four-door), but headroom’s good and there is underseat storage. The bottom seat cushion is actually a bench that folds up as one unit – there’s no split here – to reveal said storage bin. It’s nice to have, but it means no flat load floor and since back seat floor space is already at a bit of a premium, the bin cuts into it even further. Rear set passengers do get their own USB ports, though, which is nice. There are, of course, USB ports up front as well – two of them, one USB-A, one USB-C – as well as a standard 8-in. infotainment display. Which is fine and Ford’s SYNC system is a good one with big buttons and an easy-to-use interface as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. What’s weird is that big space beside the screen. I originally thought it was there because there is a bigger display available and that space would allow for it. Which isn’t the case; that is, in fact, a storage bin with a removable tacky pad that could be removed and washed, that seems somewhat vestigial as its shape and position don’t seem like it could fit all that much. Turns out, Ford is all about 3D printing these days and they’ve actually turned to the 3D printing community – this is a thing, apparently – to 3D print random things that could do work in the Maverick. One of those things is like a kind of vertical webbing that fits in that bin, and can be used to store pens and tire pressure gauges in a reasonably orderly fashion. Without that, though, it looks unfinished. Back in the front seat, meanwhile, the available space is rather good. While the Maverick is roughly the size of a previous-generation Ranger, it rides lower on a unibody so you sit lower and have more headroom as a result. It may look like it has a bit of a chopped top, but sat inside you won’t realize it…until you look out the back window. It’s not that tall and since its middle pane opens and closes, Ford has had to build in some
14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2022
extra housing in the form of thick black plastic, reducing rearward visibility further still. Other than that, though, outward visibility is fantastic – it takes the Hyundai Santa Cruz to the cleaners in this department – thanks to large side windows and squared off corners. Not only is the Maverick easy to steer through tight quarters and park; it’s an absolute joy to do so. One of the reasons it’s so easy to park is that it’s not that long – only about 2.5 inches or so longer bumper to bumper than the Bronco Sport – and part of that is because the only bed length you can get is a 4.5-footer, meaning the bed is about as long as it is wide. There is a bed extender feature that adds another two feet or so, but there aren’t any bed access aids to speak of – no extra steps, no self-lowering suspension – though the rear bumper does get a grippy topper. Of course, since the Maverick is a pretty low truck to start with, the bed walls aren’t that high and are fairly accessible from the side for even average size adults. There’s no underfloor storage in the bed like the Santa Cruz has, but there is a power outlet and a storage cubby in the passenger-side wall. In hybrid form, the Maverick makes 191 horsepower and 155 pound-feet of torque, fed to the front wheels via a CVT. 2.0 litre models get more power and AWD, as well as a more traditional eight-speed auto. It’s also only on the 2.0 that you can get the tow package that allows for up to 4,000 lbs. of tow capacity. The hybrid sits at 2,000 lbs, which should be enough for those buyers that are looking to replace a CUV with this Maverick and need it to tow kayaks as opposed to concrete. That group – actually, all groups – will also appreciate the fuel economy of the hybrid, which rang in at 6.8L / 100 km during my test. That’s actually a tick below what Ford claims for the combined cycle, which is always a good thing and was done without me hypermiling or even spending the whole time in Eco mode, which is joined here by tow/haul, slippery, sport and normal. Yes, you read that right; this hybrid pickup with less than 200 hp gets a sport mode and it actually makes sense because even with the CVT – often a transmission type that is less than involving when it comes to a vehicle’s drive – there’s enough get up and go here to disguise both the CVT and hybrid powertrain. Throttle response on tip-in is good, and I was never left feeling trapped when it came time to make a pass on the highway before the passing lane ended and so on. I did keep it in sport for most of my time on the highway, though, which I found was the way
to go. Sure; even in sport, the Maverick starts to feel a little strained as you really get on it, especially on mountain roads as I was, but it’s no deal-breaker and if you’re after more power, there’s always the AWD Ecoboost model which we hope to sample some time soon. So the powertrain is good but the real star is the ride and handling. In addition to the great inner-city manners we spoke of, the Maverick makes its way through faster highway sweepers with good body control as well and the steering is nicely weighted – and even somewhat feelsome – so you have a good idea about what’s going on beneath you. I think the Bronco Sport (and Escape, with which the Maverick also shares a platform) are to be thanked both for the handling and the ride, which turns out to be pleasingly short on the jarring and rear-end bob you get from body-on-frame pickups with leaf springs. The Maverick eschews those for Macpherson struts up front and a torsion bar at the rear, replacing the multi-link set-up the 2.0 Ecoboost AWD models get. They’ve really tuned the suspension well and for me, who was expecting a choppier ride due to the Maverick’s somewhat workmanlike styling and size, it was a real breath of fresh air. The Maverick, it has to be said, is a real breath of fresh air in general. It rides great, works well in the city and on the highway, it’s capable and it even has the styling. This is a supreme effort from Ford that ticks a tonne of boxes. These guys know their trucks – no matter the size – and it shows.

Generational Vehicle The all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning has finally arrived! Story and photos by Dan Heyman
W
“ atershed moment” and “generational vehicle” are not phrases one often gets to write when it comes to reviewing vehicles. I have driven some great ones in my time, but they were great more on the micro level. A vehicle that moves the yardsticks on a macro level, though? That’s rare. It’s rare, but recently, I think I’ve experienced it and of course, it was behind the wheel of a pickup truck. Indeed, why shouldn’t it be? Four of the five highest-selling passenger vehicles in Canada last year were pickups. If we’re going to see a real turning of the tides in the car and light truck world, it’s going to involve a big seller. With the Ford F-150 Lightning EV pickup (Pro: $58,000, fleet only; XLT: $68,000; Lariat: $80,000; Platinum: $110,000), it doesn’t just involve a big seller but the biggest seller as the F-150 has been the bestselling passenger vehicle in Canada for over 50 years running. If Ford could release an EV pickup that worked – that could still haul, still tow and still comfortably be an everyday driver – this could be their biggest release since the original 1948 F-1. You wouldn’t necessarily know it from looking at the Lightning, however. With the exception of its unique non-grille, unique wheels, and “Lightning” scripting along the side, this looks a lot like a standard F-150. Even the solid one-piece “grille” has been given a texture to make it look more traditional, while at the same time making the Lightning the most aerodynamic F-150 ever. The interior follows suit; with the exception of the optional 15.5inch infotainment display (a 12-inch item is standard) and slightly different gauge cluster, it’s all F-150 in here including a full-flat load floor with deployable rear underseat storage, Apple CarPlay 20 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2022
and Android Auto, optional heated front and rear seats and cooled front seats, optional full-length moonroof and standard collapsible shift lever. Why collapsible? If need be, you can fold out the armrest and use the area above the shift lever as a workspace. Or lunch table.
on a DC fast charger can go from 15-80 percent in 41 minutes in perfect conditions; cold temperatures can increase that by as much as 44 per cent in the worst case, so you’ll want to keep that in mind and pre-condition your truck, done via an app.
That outline you see surrounding the fender badging, meanwhile, is there because that’s where the charge port is – on the left side, anyway. The right side just looks like there’s a charge port there. Charging
Two battery sizes are available: there’s a 98 kWh option providing a claimed 483 kilometres of range and 452 horsepower, and a 131 kWh option providing 515 km and 580 hp. All Lightnings make a
22 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2022
frankly startling 775 pound-feet of torque and get dual-motor AWD, enough to tow up to 10,000 pounds and haul up to 2,235 lbs. And, it must be said, enough to make it the most powerful F-150 Ford sells, which should appease those who will bemoan the fact that the last Lightning was a sports truck. Powerful as this new Lightning is, the Raptor is still the dynamics king in the F-150 line-up. It’s all very impressive for an EV, but keep in mind you are limited to a 5.5-foot bed and SuperCrew cab and there is no FX4 off-road package for now, which could change going forward. The underhood void left by the engine is used for something called a “Mega Power Frunk.” Essentially, it’s a storage area that can hold up to 400 lbs. and has a power hookup. That means if you’ve got a folding e-bike up there or battery-operated tools, for example, you can charge it all as you drive. The closed grille also means your stuff won’t get wet. In addition to the items in the frunk, the bed comes with a standard 9.6 kW Pro Power Onboard power generator with four 120V sockets and a single 240V socket. It’s perfect for powering a jobsite…or your home. Say you’ve installed a Level II wall charger at your home, and you’ve plugged your Lightning in. If you were to experience a power outage, the truck will automatically start powering your home and on a full charge, can do so for between 3-10 days depending on whether or not you’re watching your 70-inch OLED TV the whole time and slow-cooking roasts, or simply trying to keep the lights on. Once power comes back on, the current flips and the truck starts to charge again. Further, Ford says that soon, they’re expecting owners to be able to tell the truck to charge their home during peak hours so you’re literally “off the grid” when it’s at its most expensive, if you live in a peak power situation. This isn’t just a new truck; it’s a whole new infrastructure. The thing is, it is also a truck and it performs its traditional truck duties very well.
JUNE/JULY 2022 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 23
Power delivery is direct and without delay and while it won’t leap off the line like a Mach-E, you might not want that kind of acceleration from your truck. As long as there’s power enough to reach the end of the passing lane before that RV ahead does and to cruise comfortably at highway speeds, it’s all good. There’s even a digital “engine sound” you can turn off, if you so please. The menu used for this function is also used for your one-pedal drive toggle and when on, I was pleased to find it doesn’t clamp the binders too violently when you release the throttle; it just gently applies some drag, all the way to stop. One could argue that one-pedal driving is a form of autonomous driving but if you want even more in that vein, the Lightning has you covered. It is one of the first Ford vehicles to get an application of the Blue Oval’s Blue Cruise autonomous tech, which essentially allows you to drive with no hands on the wheel and no feet on the pedals if certain conditions are met. Namely, you need to be driving on a divided highway with no level crossings. Activate adaptive cruise with the press of a button, ensure the lane keep assist system is on and that’s all there is to it; you’ll get a message in your gauge cluster letting you know that hands-free driving is active and you’re free to be on your merry way. Don’t think you can watch Netflix on your iPad while you’re at it, however; the system does feature a camera that watches your eyes to make sure they’re on the road and will deactivate (with an audible warning) if not. During my test of the system it worked well, although it does deactivate if it senses the turns are becoming too harsh, and I found that threshold to be a little on the low side. Since there is no transmission and no mechanical engine at work, I was left without the groans and moans associated with towing as I hooked up to a 5,000-lb. trailer. The Lightning just goes about its business with nary a complaint. I did see my range drop by about half while towing the load but as always: if towing is job number 1 for you, there are other trucks to go with. Still, the Lightning gets all the great tow gadgets seen elsewhere in the line-up such as Pro Trailer Backup Assist and the ability to have your blind spot system cover the length of your trailer. 24 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2022
When it comes to hauling, meanwhile, the Lightning gets a suite of apps including an onboard digital scale and tongue weight assessment. We were also given the chance to haul a 1,500-lb. load of wine casks and once again, the Lightning performed the test with nary a hair out of place. While the powertrain is obviously the biggest add over every other F-150 out there, Ford hasn’t forgotten about the chassis. To wit: the Lightning marks the first time an F-150 gets independent rear suspension. The result is a much smoother ride and coupled with all that heavy battery weight sitting nice and low in the chassis, reduced body roll. The Lightning is a home run hit for Ford. Actually, when you consider its infrastructure, it’s a walk-off grand slam, and it’s easy to understand while there are already 200,000 orders for this thing, even though they can only produce 100,000 out of a special division at the Rouge Assembly in Michigan for ’22. That kind of adoption alone is a really good indicator that with the Lightning, the EV vehicle has left the realm of the strange, or the weird, or different, and entered the realm of the mainstream.
Off-Road Treatment
Chevrolet Introduces Silverado ZR2 & Interior Upgrades Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of GM Canada
T
he Ford Raptor has dominated the off-road truck market for more than a decade now. Then, last year, Ram unveiled its 700-plus hp desert racer the TRX, aimed directly at the Raptor. Meanwhile over at the General – nothing. Till now, that is. For 2022 ,Chevy is adding the ZR2 off-road treatment to its Silverado. This truck is a High-Country sporting front and rear elockers, a special fascia and the Multimatic DSSV damped shocks (already found on the mid-size Colorado ZR2). But is it a competitor for the king of the desert racers title? In short, no. It’s simply not the over-the-top off-roader that the other two are. However, after driving it in California, I can see the appeal and I think Chevy may have hit the sweet spot. What sets a ZR2 apart from a standard Silverado is the suspension upgrades, enhanced off-road technology and body work developed for off-road performance and capability — whether desert running or rock crawling. But this off-road trait is balanced with everyday driving comfort. It also supports comparable payload and trailering found in other Silverado off-road trims. ZR2 max payload is 1,440 lb and it will tow 8,900 lb. 26 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2022
ZR2 highlights include the following: • Standard 6.2L V8 delivering 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission
Black/Graystone leather-trimmed interior, with complementing dark trim. We welcome this new addition to the Silverado family, one that’s very capable off-road, while not punishing the owner on-road – or in the wallet.
• Multimatic 40mm DSSV spool-valve dampers, which feature three separate spool valves to control damping and three connected chambers for fluid flow
But there is more for 2022 and in some ways it’s almost bigger than the new ZR2. The last time the Silverado had a generational update was in 2019. At the time, the truck and its powertrains
• Uniquely-tuned springs that, with the Multimatic dampers, increase maximum front and rear suspension travel, compared to the Silverado Trail Boss • Front and rear e-lockers • Specific off-road chassis and suspension calibrations, including Terrain Mode, which allows one-pedal rock crawling • 33-inch off-road MT tires • Unique skid plate package • New high-approach steel front bumper designed for off-road strength and clearance • 31.8-degree approach angle That unique bumper has removable end caps for easier replacement in the event of close encounters with rocks or other off-road objects. The dual exhaust has been lifted and ends before the rear bumper to eliminate potential damage. In addition to its functional features, the Silverado ZR2 is distinguished by several aesthetic cues, including a new black hood insert, a unique grille with integrated lighting and a “flow-tie” emblem, ZR2 badges, unique 18-inch wheels and a unique Jet
were well received – the interior though, was not. Customers have been very vocal about this “miss.” For 2022 Chevy has corrected that interior mistake. Silverado has refreshed the interior on the LT trim and above, incorporating new materials into a design that gives the cabin a spacious and more premium feel. The new interior is rooted in a driver-oriented instrument panel that features a 13.4-inch horizontal touchscreen, along with a 12.3-inch digital, configu-

rable instrument cluster. The 2021 model’s instrument panel has been replaced with horizontal lines and floating elements that enhance the feeling of spaciousness to the Silverado’s cabin. Additionally, the new centre console has an available electronic shift controller in models with bucket seats. The new look and feel of the interior are elevated with new colours, seat designs and more premium materials throughout. That’s especially true for the top-level High Country trim, which features new and unique elements including: • Authentic open-pore wood trim on the console, upper glove box and doors. • Standard leather seating surfaces with an exclusive custom perforation and stitching pattern. • Stainless steel speaker grilles with the Bose premium audio system, standard on High Country and LTZ • Two interior colour choices, Jet Black or Nightshift Blue That new infotainment screen is the centrepiece of the more intuitive technology in Silverado and is paired with a new digital, configurable instrument cluster. The configurable cluster and infotainment display are designed to offer new levels of personalization and intuitive interaction. The available Rear Camera Mirror and Head-Up Display take the total to four technologically advanced screens, each helping provide an engaging and comprehensive driving experience. Additionally, all Silverado trims LT and above are equipped with Google built-in compatibility. With it, you can control certain vehicle functions by saying ‘Hey Google’ or pressing the 28 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2022
‘push to talk’ button on the steering wheel. Use your voice to call or text, listen to music, set reminders, or even change the temperature. Another new feature for 2022 is the addition of Super Cruise to Silverado. First debuted on Cadillac as the industry’s first true hands-free driver assistance technology, it’s now available on

Silverado High Country and can be used on more than 200,000 miles (320,000 km) of compatible roads in the U.S. and Canada. Super Cruise employs advanced technology, including a Driver Attention System and precision LiDAR map data. The Driver Attention System uses a small camera located on the top of the steering column and works with infrared lights to determine where the driver is looking whenever Super Cruise is in operation. If the Driver Attention System detects the driver’s gaze has turned away from the road ahead for too long, the steering wheel light bar will prompt the driver to return their attention to the road. If the system determines continued inattentiveness, it will use visible and audible alerts to notify the driver to take back control of the wheel. Super Cruise can be used when trailering with the Silverado, with specific calibrations designed to account for the additional drag and increased braking distance that comes with trailering. When not trailering, Lane Change on Demand and Automatic Lane Change are also available with Super Cruise. These trucks are available now at dealers across the country.

Two Sides of the Same Coin?
The 2022 Ford Expedition Platinum and Expedition Timberline Story and photos by Spencer Whitney
F
or decades, Canada’s most beloved truck has been the Ford F-150. This undisputed king of pickups is now in its fourteenth generation, and boasts all manner of technology and convenience features – some of which were once reserved only for top-spec German and Japanese luxury sedans. Today, driving a well-equipped full-size pickup is arguably one of the most relaxing and comfortable experiences you can have on the road.
The Expedition lineup is a go-to for buyers seeking the same experience without a truck bed they’ll never use – after all, the Expedition platform has derived directly from the F-150 since its inception in 1997. With six trim levels across two wheelbase options, Ford’s flagship full-size SUV continues to build on the F-150’s success by offering an eight-passenger, fully-enclosed five-door vehicle with truck-like utility and capability. 2022 brings a mid-generation refresh to the Expedition. Changes include a new front end appearance, new wheel options, and a stylish interior updated to match the all-new F-150. Debuting this year is the off-road oriented Timberline spec, but more about that later. We recently had an opportunity to test two very different trim levels of the Expedition on extended back-to-back road trips across British Columbia: Platinum, and Timberline. While there wasn’t any snow to be seen, the dirt roads and slippery highways of this province can be a challenge to any 4x4 at any time of year, so we headed out to see what each model could handle. Fully loaded Platinum models feature just about every option you can imagine. This top-spec trim leaves nothing on the table – only the closely related Lincoln Navigator would offer more, but for a hefty surcharge. Other comfort features include captain’s chairs in the roomy second row, powered third row deployment, and even a massage function in the front row. Despite this, our second-row passengers may have
32 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2022
been more comfortable than those of us in the front, given the ample leg room and panoramic views through the SUV’s large windows. Both models we tested were equipped with Ford’s massive Sync 4 infotainment screen, a touch-heavy system that unfortunately robs the dash and console of all but the most essential vehicle controls. The 15-inch display is oriented in a vertical format, with the top half of the screen inevitably dedicated to your phone’s CarPlay or Android Auto feature. Unfortunately, the bottom half of the screen is a mess. Controls that you’ll want to access frequently – like climate or heated seats – are relegated to the corners and become difficult to adjust when touched. Annoyingly, some adjustments completely take over the screen without automatically returning to your navigation or media display, requiring your attention to aim for a tiny “X.” While it might be the flagship system in Ford vehicles these days, Sync 4 is far less user-friendly than the nearperfection seen in the latest F-150, which retains climate control knobs and other functions as physical features. Perhaps the only redeeming feature of the Expedition’s screen setup is the floating volume knob, the operation of which is seemingly magical. Speaking of volume, the Platinum boasts a standard 22-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system that even includes speakers in the headliner above each passenger. Each of these trim levels offer their own dirt-road competency once you leave the highway. Platinum drivers will benefit from Ford’s computer-controlled damping system that adjusts damper response in milliseconds, preventing a wheel from dropping all the way in to a pothole. This is equally useful on rough unpaved backroads and reduces the need to drop your tire pressure as insurance against hard hits that could cause damage or a flat tire. Although
JUNE/JULY 2022 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 33
it didn’t make up more than a few dozen kilometres of the trip, we found that the Platinum was confident and firm, even on roads waiting for a springtime visit from the grader. The Timberline takes a more conventional approach to rough roads. Ford assumes you might do a lot of driving on dirt, so durability is enhanced with off-road spec shocks and a tuned suspension that allows for maximum wheel travel and greater ground clearance than other models. On top of that are standard all-terrain tires, a slight suspension lift, a locking rear differential, and skid plates. Ford’s selectable Terrain Management modes (also standard on the Platinum) make sure you get the best use of the 10-speed automatic transmission by automatically holding lower gears in rocky situations or allowing for wheel spin when you need more traction in sandy or slippery conditions. While we didn’t tackle any true “off-road” situations (you’ll need a Bronco or similar for that kind of job) we did experience muddy hills, sandy lake beds, and even steep hill climbs on very loose gravel. At no point did it feel like the Timberline couldn’t handle what we were taking on – and as always, we drove appropriately for the conditions and took speed very seriously. No vehicle should be operated outside its limitations, especially when there’s a 1000-foot drop to the passenger side! Despite the varying terrain and conditions experienced on both trims of Expedition we tested, fuel economy levelled out at around 15.0L/100km – a testament to the power available on-tap from the 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. Gone are the days when a V8 was the only acceptable powerplant for off-roading - and who could argue with that at $2.30 a litre? Although shy of the F-150’s 13,200-pound towing capacity, the Expedition’s 9,500-pound hauling ability is noth-
34 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2022
ing to sneeze at when you consider that it doesn’t have leaf-sprung suspension (and carries more people.) Whether you choose a luxurious 7-seater Platinum with goodies like power running boards and massage seats, or a brutish Timberline with its knobby tires and tuned drivetrain, you’ll get a vehicle that is enjoyable to drive on pavement, and capable off-road when you need it. If your trip to the cabin involves a few dozen kilometres of dirt roads and a quest to find a new secret fishing spot, the Timberline might be your best choice. But for maximum enjoyment of the pavement a vehicle spends most of its life on, we can’t think of a more comfortable ride than the Expedition Platinum.
Simple and Direct 2022 Nissan Frontier PRO-4X
Story and photos by Gerry Frechette
T
he introduction of a new-generation Nissan Frontier is not something that happens very often. Not even every decade, in fact. The last time it happened was in 2005, but within the last year, a mostly-new Frontier has been introduced, and it is a very worthwhile addition to the mid-size pick-up segment.
Most recently, Nissan has brought out an off-road oriented PRO4X model, and we had the chance to drive it in a few different conditions, including the loose stuff. In some ways, the new Frontier is less of an all-new model, than an improved version of the previous generation. Which has its pluses and minuses. For example, under the hood is the 3.8-litre V6 that was introduced in 2020 on the last generation truck. It is smooth and dishes out the most horsepower in the class (310), but maybe has a little less low-end grunt than the newest turbo fours have. Backing it up is a nine-speed automatic (no manual is offered) that makes sure the engine is always in its most optimal torque range. The PRO4X carries on with this mechanical package, and Nissan adds a bunch of useful off-road gear, both standard and optional, to make this a more capable and fun truck than the regular models. Topping that list is a set of specially-tuned Bilstein shock absorbers, which transform the Frontier into a very confident performer in the rough stuff, while also enabling a smooth on-road ride. In fact, we had the chance to try the PRO-4X on a tight handling course, and it surprised with what passes for a nimble sort of feeling, at least for
36 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE JUNE/JULY 2022
locations, but sometimes you get going a little fast, and bang....so it’s a bit of welcome insurance. Another feature of the PRO-4X is the upgraded front lighting system, with all-LED technology. In our short daytime drive of the truck, we didn’t have the chance to experience this lighting, but if it is like other LED systems we have experienced, it should put this truck at the top of the mid-size heap for nighttime visibility. The interior of the new Frontier is big leaps ahead of the last generation, in comfort, convenience and perceived quality, and the top-of-the-line PRO-4X builds on that with standard and optional
a full-frame, solid-axle pickup. But on rutted, muddy trails, and uneven gravel, these shocks impart a solid feeling to the truck that makes for more control and comfort. Also contributing to that feeling is the PRO-4x’s electronic locking rear differential, which, as the name implies, locks the two rear wheels together mechanically, so that if one side loses traction, the other will be able to continue driving the truck forward. Picture a situation where one of the rear wheels is fully off the ground, which is exactly how we experienced the PRO-4X. The benefit of this system goes beyond off-roading, as it offers the same benefits in low-traction on-road situations like gravel and snow. The PRO-4X is also equipped with skid plates underneath, to protect the vital mechanical parts like the engine and transmission oil pans, transfer case, and fuel tank. Chances are that you will not get in such a situation where you’ll contact a rock in just those
features. The primary feature we like on all Frontiers and many other Nissans is the Zero Gravity seats that provide exceptional comfort and support. Said seats can be had in leather if one really must, as part of the optional Luxury Package, along with the excellent Fender premium audio with nine speakers and subwoofer.
JUNE/JULY 2022 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 37
In Canada, Frontier is offered only with four-wheel drive, and in two body styles and bed lengths. For PRO-4X specifically, the King Cab (shorter extended) body comes with a six-foot bed, while the Crew Cab (full rear seat area) body comes with a five-foot bed. So, essentially, the wheelbase and length stay the same, no matter the model.
On the other hand....there is one glaring omission on all Frontiers including the PRO-4X. The steering column does not telescope, so that those who need to sit with the seat towards the rear of its travel (those long of leg) had better have very long arms to reach the steering wheel. Additionally, although the steering wheel does tilt, the pivot point is so far out towards the wheel, that the wheel angle is a bit extremely tilted forward at its top-most position. It all makes for a rather narrow range of wheel positioning available to achieve a comfortable overall driving position, unless you are unusually short. Also standard on PRO-4X is a power sliding glass moonroof, and a nine-inch colour touchscreen (versus the standard non-touch eightincher) with navigation. Nissan’s Intelligent Around View Monitor includes an Off-Road mode, so that you can watch for obstacles and clearances via cameras from the driver’s seat. Tires are upgraded from all-season on normal Frontiers, to all-terrain in P265/70R17 size.
Driving the PRO-4X involves few decisions, but you are the one to make them. There are no offroad presets, or terrain modes, or variable throttle response or shock absorber settings. In the time-honoured tradition of 4x4 pickups, you decide whether you want to be in two-wheel or four-wheel, high range or low range, you tell that to the transfer case, and the only decision from there is the electronic locking differential for extreme low-traction situations. And that’s it – simple. The Frontier is that kind of pickup. Simple and direct. It has much modern technology, but it still adheres to a traditional truck approach. The PRO-4X ups the off-road prowess, to a point. For many weekend warriors, this will be a fun truck that supports various lifestyles, with many options available from both Nissan and the aftermarket. Call it “off-road light,” as we think there could be another higher level of capability that Nissan might just be keeping up their sleeve for some time in the future. The PRO-4X Crew Cab lists for $48,498, only some $2,100 more than the regular SV Sport Crew Cab, so in the Frontier scheme of things, it is good value, too.

as more than a decade already really passed since the Ram brand left the Dodge nest and struck out on its own? The 1500 Limited 10th Anniversary Edition is proof, joining the portfolio for 2022 full of little tweaks and premium upgrades reminding enthusiasts why the upscale version of the light-duty truck is such a favourite.
“The new 2022 Ram 1500 Limited 10th Anniversary Edition celebrates 10 years of luxury pickup truck leadership, featuring the ultimate combination of capability, luxury and refinement,” says Mike Koval Jr., Ram Brand CEO, in a news release. “Ram 1500 Limited buyers have enjoyed the highest quality materials for a decade now and the Limited 10th Anniversary Edition is the latest example of how Ram delivers the most luxurious pickups in the industry.” Sprayed a stunning dark Blue Shade paint colour, the exterior also features polished tow hooks, a Mopar middle bed step, adjustable tie-down anchors and 22-inch alloy wheels. In addition, the versatile multifunction tailgate is standard equipment. Rather than having to hop up into the bed to get at cargo, the 60/40 swing-out doors not only provides easy access to contents but makes loading and unloading a simpler task too. And, if desired, the whole panel can still flip down in a conventional manner. While already well-appointed, this 1500 really steps things up in the luxury department. The seats and door cards are covered in quilted leather, and even the grab handles are leather wrapped. There’s also hits of genuine wood and metal scattered throughout the interior as well

Two motors are available on the special model: either a 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 or the 5.7-litre eTorque mild hybrid V8 Trucks Plus tested, making 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque and mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Similar to other examples on the market, a 48-volt battery-powered belt-drive motor generator replaces a traditional alternator and includes quite a few benefits. Besides
boosting performance and efficiency — and offering the highest towing capacity in the lineup at 12,750 pounds — the setup smoothens the engine start-stop transition. The fact the pickup is essentially a hybrid is virtually imperceptible while driving. All the bells-andwhistles of the regular variant remain, such as the optional self-levelling air suspension that hunkers down to improve fuel economy on the highway and help ingress/ egress, rises up (to a maximum of 102 additional millimetres) for off-roading adventures and yields overall better ride comfort.

Off-Road Capable? Story by Gerry Frechette, photos by Doug Berger
“mainstream” prestige exotics has not yet succumbed to the temptation.
F
So, the nearly half-million-dollar SUV at least had some ground clearance and all-wheel drive, so that was a good start. But wait, how about that colour? I think to most people, orange is not a colour one associates with Rolls-Royce, at least not in civilized society. But this particular Rolls would be right at home on the mean streets of L.A. or Miami, where jaded people who think they have seen it all suddenly discover they haven’t.
or those of us who get to drive many vehicles in a year, there are still some brands that are a special occasion. Rolls-Royce would be one of those, as the revered British manufacturer is synonymous with prestige and luxury. Rarer still is the opportunity to drive one off-road, and to have the Rolls in question be bright orange. Such an opportunity presented itself this spring, and who could refuse such an offer? Now, in case you had visions of a Phantom sedan getting itself high-centred on the first log obstacle, this Rolls was the Cullinan SUV, a vehicle one might imagine it pained the high-brow purveyor of prestige mobility to introduce, all in the name of keeping up with all the other prestige brands who launched SUVs to sell in North America. I think only Ferrari amongst the
There can be little doubt about the Cullinan’s suitability as a soft-roader, the vehicle to drive up to the mansion out in the country, effortlessly handling gravel and snow, and doing it with great pace, if not efficiency, thanks to its 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 with a perhaps underrated 563 horsepower, with no electric motors to do some of the work. The torque output is a monstrous 626 lb-ft at only 1,600 rpm, put through an 8-speed automatic, JUNE/JULY 2022 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 47
so the launch from stop is immediate and impressive, for a 2,660-kg vehicle. That down-low grunt would surely be a benefit off-road. The rest of the hardware between the engine and the road is perhaps not so off-road oriented, on the face of it. The four-wheel independent double-wishbone air suspension is silky smooth, and the full-time all-wheel drive system and 21inch summer performance tires combined with it to make for a very controlled, almost nimble feel in tight transitions on tarmac. But enough about smooth, hard surfaces. How does the Roller do in the soft and rough stuff? Was the Cullinan able to deliver the famed R-R “Magic Carpet Ride” in rough terrain, the stated objective of the company? Obviously, the tires on the one we drove were not the hot set-up for traction in mud and gravel, but we figured we’d still be able to have a little fun in Le Grand Orange. The first thing the driver does is push the aptlynamed “Off-Road” button on the console, which transforms the chassis, adapting to one of five drive modes - snow, mud, sand, gravel and rutted track. The R-R customer is known to not want to have to make all sorts of adjustments to drive his or (increasingly) her car, so the one-button approach is by design. The air suspension raises the body by 44 mm, and will actually push down harder on any wheel that is losing traction, to cite just one example of how technology has been designed in to the Cullinan that allows it to perform effortlessly in any condition.

ICE COLD ANYWHERE On mostly flat surfaces covered in dirt, gravel and mud (and we presume snow as well), the big Roller had no apparent difficulty, given the limitations of the tires. But we were more interested in how it would do when confronted by obstacles that would be more of a test of suspension than tires. Over a large log obstacle the Cullinan clamoured, needing all of that additional ground clearance afforded by the air suspension. No problem with approach or departure angles, either. Next was a slippery, muddy side-angle corner around another log obstacle, which was again no problem given the sane speeds we were observing. But the last exercise would be perhaps the biggest challenge. That would be the articulation exercise designed to see a vehicle always have fewer than four wheels on terra firma. The Cullinan did spin its elevated rear wheel a little bit, as the other three

searched for traction in very slippery mud, so maybe a locking rear differential would have helped here, but it was no big issue, and the big Rolls showed off how capable it really is. The Cullinan certainly brings the storied Rolls-Royce marque into the all-terrain realm, with capability and panache. We aren’t so convinced that bright orange is a colour that every owner would still appreciate over the expected long life of this RollsRoyce, but to each his own. Luxury – everywhere. That, in a nutshell, was Rolls-Royce’s objective with the Cullinan, and mission accomplished.

Bigger is Better 2023 Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L Debut
Story by Dan Heyman, photos courtesy of Stellantis
I
f there’s one thing we know about the various Stellantis brands – Dodge, Jeep, Ram and so on – bigger is often better. Or at least always welcome and so it goes that the upscale Wagoneer brand has now been bitten by that same bug with this: the 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer L and Wagoneer L. And in this case, “bigger is better” isn’t quite enough; “much bigger” is probably more appropriate.
In practice, that translates to an extra 433 litres of cargo space behind the third row of seating, for a total of 1,252 L, which are bestin-class figures. It also means that Jeep can now claim best-in-class
Indeed, with an extra foot in overall length and over half a foot more space between the axles, the Grand Wagoneer goes from “big” to “massive” with the L models. It doesn’t do much to hide it, either, as you can see where much of that extra length comes from, and that’s behind the rear wheels as that rear overhang and window you can tell have grown by quite a margin. The changes have necessitated revisions to the rear floor, rear ladder structure, tub and seat rails.
overall passenger volume and second-row legroom. Both L models can be had in either seven- or eight-passenger configurations. Not only is the cargo area big, but it also comes specced with six tie-down hoops and has enough swept area to load a 4 x 8-foot sheet of plywood. The numbers are one thing, but seen “in the metal” on-stage at the New York International Auto Show, the Grand Wagoneer L is an absolute behemoth, even making stalwarts like the Chevrolet Suburban and Lincoln Navigator long wheelbase trucks look somewhat tame – yes, we’re saying “tame” – in comparison. JUNE/JULY 2022 OFF-ROAD Plus MAGAZINE 55
And it’s not just the size, but the detailing. The front fascia on non-“Carbide” models (that trim adds all sorts of blacking-put, from the grille, to the wheels, to the badges) is positively dripping with chrome, the LED headlights glow along with that, the wheels measuring up to 22 inches are huge, the squared-off fenders surrounding them look like nothing will stop them or even ding them – as in, they’d cut the rock in half, as opposed to the other way ‘round – and it feels like you’ll lose your breath either climbing up into it, or walking around it 10 times. Of course, if you are having trouble stepping up into the Wagoneer L or Grand Wagoneer L, the latter comes standard with a QuadraLift air suspension system that provides an access height at one end of the spectrum, and adds an additional 2-inches of travel at the other end of the spectrum in Off-road 2 mode, which also allows the L to ford through 24 inches of water. There’s also aero mode that lowers the vehicle a bit for smoother air flow around or under it when on the highway. The Wagoneer L, meanwhile, can be optioned with the Quadra Lift system. There are also power-deploying running boards that come as standard on the Grand Wagoneer L. Inside, as needs to be the case when you’re up at the luxury SUV level that we’re at here, the materials used are of top quality. Geography fans will appreciate the Palermo, Capri and Nappa leather seating and there are 24-way power seats, accent stitching,

Just because the Hurricane is down two cylinders to the Hemi, don’t think it’s down on power; in fact, to the contrary, the Hurricane makes more power in both the Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L: 420 horsepower and 468 pound-feet of torque in the former, 510 hp and 500 lb-ft in the latter. So they make more power, all while using less fuel, according to Jeep. Power gets channelled to all four wheels through an 8-speed TorqueFlite auto, and there are three available AWD systems: Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II, with that last
leather-wrapped instrument panel (that can be configured every which way and features almost two dozen different menus and a night vision feature) and a power release tip-and-slide function for the second row. On the tech front, you have up to 75-inches of total screen area spread across the main infotainment display, the display ahead of the front passenger and optional displays for both second-row occupants. The front passenger display can be used to set navigation commands and even stream Amazon Fire TV, which can be done by rear seat occupants as well. Add the optional 23-speaker, 1,375-watt McIntosh audio system (a 19-speaker number comes as standard) and you can see that yeah, it’s go big or go home with the Grand Wagoneer L. Indeed, while we’ve seen a lot of that already on non-L Grand Wagoneers, what we haven’t yet seen is the all-new powertrain the two L models get: a 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 labelled “Hurricane”, here to step in for the Hemi V8 in order to help Stellantis comply with ever more stringent emissions standards.
one providing an electronic limited-slip differential. All L models get the Selec-Terrain system with five modes: Auto, Sport, Rock, Snow and Sand/Mud. So, in essence, for all its bluster, the Grand Wagoneer L and Wagoneer L models are going to be Jeep-capable, through and through. Prices have not yet been announced; expect those closer to the vehicles’ release date in late ’22.
