Ford Celebrates 100 Years of Truck History
O
n July 27, 2017, Ford celebrated the exact 100th anniversary of its first purpose built truck that debuted back in July of 1917, called the Ford Model TT. Now, 100 years later, the Ford brand continues to be synonymous with everything truck. It has enjoyed 51 consecutive years as Canada’s best-selling pickup and now marks seven years as the best-selling vehicle. The Model TT came to be nine years after the first Model T was made after Ford customers asked for a vehicle that could carry heavier loads. The Model TT retained the Model T cab and engine but came with a heavier duty
1935 Ford Pickup Truck frame that was capable of carrying one ton of payload and sold for $600. By 1928, Ford had sold 1.3 million Model TTs before replacing it with the more capable Model AA with a 1.5-ton chassis. 1948 saw the debut of what would be come to be known as F-Series Bonus Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017
built trucks with Classes 2 through 7 capacities covered. 1953 saw the debut of the second-generation F-Series with increased engine power and capacity along with a re-branding of the current names. The fourth generation debuted in 1961 and with it came Ford’s revolutionary twin I-beam front suspension. The sixth-generation 1975 Ford F-150
F-Series is where the F-150 came to be as Ford dropped the popular F-100 in order to produce the F-150 that had a higher-capacity than its predecessor. Ford reset the benchmark again in 1998 with the introduction of the F-Series Super Duty which is designed for fleet and heavy-duty use. Today, the F-Series continues to enjoy success and evolve in order to fit the current market, emphasized by the debut of the EcoBoost V6 engine in 2011 that provides better fuel consumption without sacrificing power. It’s safe to say that Ford has enjoyed a successful 100 years building trucks and has shown no signs of slowing down.

Report Suggests Hyundai May Be Launching Pickup Truck in North America A recent Autoblog report suggests that Hyundai is planning on launching a pickup truck in the United States as part of a plan to shift away from sedans. Michael J. O’Brien, who is the vice president of corporate and product planning Hyundai USA, reportedly told Reuters that the Korean automaker has given the green light for Hyundai Santa Cruz Concept the development of a pickup, which will be somewhat similar in design to the Santa Cruz show vehicle that debuted in 2015. Nothing was mentioned about the truck possibly making its way to us north of the border, but we expect there’s a pretty good chance that if the truck is made for the U.S., it will make its way into Canada as well.

Ford has introduced the industry’s first pursuit-rated pickup truck called the 2018 F-150 Police Responder, which will give law enforcement agencies a more versatile patrol vehicle. The truck features the powerful and efficient 3.5-litre EcoBoost engine, paired to the Ford SelectShift 10speed transmission, producing 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque which is more than any other pursuit-rated police vehicle. The Responder is based on of the F-150 FX4 off-road model and utilizes the same high-strength steel frame and military-grade aluminum-alloy body as the rest of the current F-150 lineup. As you might’ve guessed, additional performance enhancements have been made to the truck including a police-calibrated brake system with upgraded calipers, an upgraded front-stabilizer bar for improved braking and handling and 18-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires. The up fit-ready interior boasts a column shifter with centre-seat delete, heavy-duty cloth front seats and heavy-duty vinyl flooring for easy cleanup. Additionally, a high-output 240-amp alternator is included to support on-board electrical devices, along with a police-calibrated speedometer and engine hour and engine idle hour meters.
PICK UP LOCATIONS
New 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty Offers Highest Torque Rating Ever Ram has recently announced details for the 2018 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty highlighted by the news that the truck will offer an astounding 930 lb-ft of torque out of the 6.7-litre Cummins diesel engine, which is the highest ever rating for a pickup. This gives the truck the ability to tow up to 30,000 lbs. (13,608 kg) with a fifth-wheel hitch. Ram has worked closely with Cummins to improve the engine for 2018 with improvements including higher boost limits through a variable geometry turbo, and flow rate increases through the fuel delivery system to provide the additional 30 lb-ft of torque. The 30,000 lbs. fifth wheel towing rating is made possible by an in-house hitch design from Ram Engineering which will allow customers to move away from Class 4 and 5 trucks to haul trailers. The 3500 Heavy Duty boasts maximum gooseneck and conventional hitch trailer weight ratings for 2018 of 31,210 lbs and 20,000 lbs. respectively. Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017
Constant Innovation
Ford has updated the F-150 for 2018
Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy of Ford
L
ooking at the latest F-series truck here on a farm in Michigan, it’s easy to imagine another truck, born not far from here in Dearborn, which started this bloodline back in 1948. Okay, we didn’t have to imagine it, because we had one there, a companion and sharp contrast to the newest 2018 offering from Ford. Styling for the 2018 is a tame update of the current model with cues like the lighting and embossed logos being the key changes. But past these cosmetic changes, Ford has also added three new interior décor packages, six new wheel designs of 18 to 22-inches, and brought back the mesh grille (last found on a ’08 Ford). The other effort is to blend the half-ton and HD SuperDuty styles – that process which started last year is now done. They now both share the same cabs and the same look. Past this, technology in the form of driver-assist features continue to be added; a process that Ford works at constantly.
all without disengaging. The BLISS system, which is a blind spot warning system, can now also be programmed to include the length of a towed trailer. Pass a vehicle and the blind-spot indicator will stay on till the trailer has safely cleared the passed vehicle. Auto stop/start is also a new standard feature on all 2018 models. So, while not new, the fact that it’s now standard is. Frankly, these systems work so well now that I doubt anyone wouldn’t want them. The upside of stop/start – with no input from the driver? A fuel savings of up to five percent annually.
It’s this program of “constant innovation” (a Ford catch-phrase) that adds meaningful content to the F-series almost annually. They don’t wait for generational changes to release updates; instead, year in and year out, they change mechanicals and add tech as it’s needed, responding to its customers wants. For example, in a major 2015 update, the body was switched to aluminum, and you’d expect Ford to ride that wave for several years. However, in 2016, it made powertrain changes and added features like Pro-Trailer backup assist. Then in 2017, the SuperDuty F-series was not only updated, but adopted the same body as the F-150 along with all its new electronics. This year, the truck has added a dozen driver-assist technologies that make this F-series that much easier and safer to drive. For example, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop/Start will bring the truck to a halt and then start it up again as traffic begins to move,

As for engines, over the 2017 and 2018 model years, the F-150’s engine line-up has been completely overhauled, with all four available powerplants getting more power and a new 10-speed transmission. For 2018, the base engine in all F-150s will be the 3.3-litre PFDI (Port Fuel Direct Injection) V6 with a six-speed transmission. It makes 290 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. Fuel consumption is 10.7L/100 km combined (EPA approved numbers). The other PFDI engine in the line-up is the 5.0-litre V8. It makes a respectable 395 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Fuel consumption is 12.4L/100 km combined. Then we get into the EcoBoost engines. The 2.7-litre V6 is surprisingly powerful with 325 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque which comes on at a very low rpm of just 2,750. Also, it gets 10.7L/100 km combined. The 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6, which first debuted in 2011, is now in its second generation and is rated at 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque with a fuel number of 11.2L/100 km combined.

The fifth powertrain is exclusive to the F-150 Raptor (for now anyway) and is a 3.5-litre EcoBoost HO version that bumps up the V6’s output to 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Fuel consumption dives to 14.7L/100km combined. An innovation that was introduced late in 2017 was the all-new 10-speed transmission. With the exception of the 3.3-litre V6 base unit, all engines are now coupled to this 10-speed. This tranny is non-sequential, meaning it jumps from gear to gear (whichever is
No other manufacturer offers as many powertrain and build choices as Ford, and they don’t intend to lose that distinction. Just as an aside – no one at the farm talked about the diesel engine that Ford announced last winter. It was supposed to be here by now – but it’s late. When I asked, I was told it will now be offered in spring of 2018. Though we know little about it, rumour has it that it’s basically the same diesel that is currently found in the Range Rover. The stats on that engine are 254 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque made by a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6. So, no truck introduction would be complete without some bragging about the “new” weight capabilities. Ford has never been shy about this and for 2018 they are once again pushing the limits and claiming new best-in-class numbers. These are 13,200 lb for towing. For payload, they have posted a 3,270 lb figure. Stating that the 2018 has larger axles, this F-series now has a Max GVWR of 18,500 lb. All this on what we still refer to as a half-ton. Perhaps we should rethink that label, as we left half-ton territory many, many years ago. Pricing for the base 2018 F-150 will start at $30,499, rising up through nine trim levels to a price of $71,399 for the SuperCrew Raptor. Trucks should start arriving at dealers this October.
called for) without having to bump up or down through every other gear. It’s really quite something to see the indicator go from tenth to fifth as you punch the throttle. This transmission features a highspeed one-way clutch, improved kinematics, a tow/haul mode, Gen II high-efficiency filtration and an internal start/stop oil pump that works with that standard auto start-stop feature that is found on all 2018 F-series trucks. So while this mantra of constant innovation makes perfect sense, the other Ford trait that has won over (and kept) so many truck buyers for decades is choice. Choice, as it applies to trims, wheelbases, cabs, box lengths and powertrains. This last one in particular is key. 14 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017

ROAD TEST: 2017 GMC CANYON DIESEL
Urban Pickup Story and photos by Gerry Frechette
T
his will be a different sort of review of a pickup truck, in the sense that it is written by someone who is not a “pickup guy,” who doesn’t quite understand some aspects of their appeal to people. Things that full-size trucks have like huge size, profligate gasoline consumption, and lack of secure accommodation for anything other than human occupants. Of course, they are useful as work vehicles, but when that pickup box is empty, and the truck is being used as a personal or family vehicle in an urban environment, is there a traditional body-on-frame truck out there that addresses the above concerns? We spent a week in the GMC Canyon, and it goes a long way towards being a pickup that a resident in the city or inner suburbs might consider. For one thing, it is a mid-size truck, one of several out there, and just that slightly smaller size is enough to make a big difference in parking and manoeuvring in urban situations. It’s still pretty darned big next to a sedan or crossover, though.
Those used to the interior room of a full-size pickup will notice the reduced space in the Canyon, but really, it is perfectly adequate for two large adults up front, and two or three not-as-large people in the back seat. As someone over 6-feet tall, I never felt cramped in the driver’s seat. The seat itself was firm and comfortable, with the electric adjust yielding good support where I wanted it. Oddly, the seat trim included vinyl that looked like carbon fibre. The Canyon we drove had the new 2.8-litre four-cylinder Duramax diesel engine under the hood, the first such engine in a mid-size pickup, at least in North America. It has all the attributes one would expect of a diesel, most notably way more torque, at way lower rpm, than the 3.6-litre gas V6, and with that, it is a different driving experience. The Canyon so-equipped is not as quick off the line, but once it gets rolling, the pulling power is impressive, and makes for responsive performance in all conditions. Yes, you can hear the usual diesel sounds, but GM has included sound deadening technology to minimize that from intruding into the cabin. The diesel is set up for towing, too, including a trailer brake system and an exhaust brake which allows the cruise control to maintain a set speed

seat, is the biggest shortcoming on most pickups, and enough to make me look elsewhere for a personal-use family-type vehicle. Like I said, I’m not a pickup guy, but other than that security aspect, the Canyon Diesel is quite impressive. Its size will be about right for many people, it delivers the thrifty fuel consumption of a mid-size gas car, it can haul and tow as much as a bigger full-size pickup with a base engine, and it is fairly comfortable and easy to drive, given the off-road tires and
downhill while towing (up to 3,447 kg) without having to apply the brakes. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the chance to see how well the Canyon towed, but it did deliver a best fuel consumption of 8.3L/100 km on a highway cruise with two adults in it, and still in the 10L-range in easy urban driving. Pretty impressive for a pickup. Nor did we have the chance to venture too far off-pavement to see how the All Terrain 4WD system (mandatory with the diesel) fared, but with off-road tires and suspension tuning, plus hill descent control, it was likely fairly competent. We would be concerned, though, with the spoiler under the front bumper compromising the approach angles it might otherwise be capable of – or just getting knocked off entirely. That brings me to discuss the lack of covered and secure storage for personal effects, as the truck comes from the factory. There are solutions in the aftermarket, but the Canyon is like all but two pickups I can think of, in that it has no secure storage for anything bigger than a handbag, beyond locking the doors. The rear seat back folds down, or the seat cushion folds up (not at the same time) to offer lots of cargo carrying flexibility, all of which can be seen through the windows. So, to cover up some personal property I travelled with, I had to throw black blankets over everything. Meanwhile, of course, the pickup bed sat empty. To me, this, plus the choice one must make between people and cargo in the back
traditional pickup chassis architecture. Of course, the added cost of the diesel engine and required packages put it up in the price range of those lower-end full-size trucks. If you are a truck lover who lives in an urban setting, who likes to maybe tow a small trailer to your favourite campsite up-country, who values fuel efficiency, and to whom the storage situation is no bother and/or you are willing to spend even more for aftermarket solutions to it, then the GMC Canyon Diesel would be a very good choice. It could even turn non-believers into pickup people.

arren, Michigan, is a town best known as the home of the Ram truck assembly plant. Yet, next door is a nondescript industrial building that houses a vehicle collection like none other; and they are not Chryslers. The General Motors Heritage Centre building is completely unassuming – till you step through the doors, that is. This facility, which is not open to the public, houses the history of all the GM brands from Day One. On the floor, there are at any time around 160 cars and trucks including concepts, one-offs and experimental vehicles. In total, the collection has over 700 historically significant vehicles housed in several buildings; however, they are only shown here. This floor show, bathed in the glow of neon brand lights, is rotated, often coinciding with specific events or anniversaries. For instance, front and centre right now is a chronological assortment of significant trucks, currently on display in honour of the 100th anniversary of the first production GM truck being built in August of 1917. 1926 Chevrolet Superior Series X

Coming Right Up...
Story by Stefanie Galeano-Zalutko, photos courtesy of the manufacturers
T
said, everyone is patiently awaiting 2018 model year releases. Many are promising, though consumers should expect some to make a bigger splash than others. Can anything truly compete with the sheer dominance of the F-150, Sierra, Silverado, and Ram in the Great White North?
Newly-introduced or enhanced vehicle platforms are no exception, and they fuel the aftermarket like lighter fluid over hot coals. That
We had an opportunity to sit down with a few big wigs across the aftermarket to gauge their excitement about the upcoming year. Their insight was telling, to say the least. “The North American market is getting back to work,” said Charly Henley of BAK Industries. “People are going places, spending money, growing their businesses, and taking vacations. All great reasons to buy a new truck and equip the rig to do its job properly.” Here’s what they had to say about the heavy hitters and unassuming prospects.
he automaker and aftermarket industries do the dance from time to time—alright, often. It’s the age-old sibling battle of, “Anything you do, I can do better.” The truth is, their cooperative advancements ensure the kind of momentum that is not only contagious, but also keeps all parties honest—a Yin and Yang effect, if you will. It’s a delicate balance, as the collective victories and setbacks of one inspires the next level of innovation for the other, and so the wheel of creativity continues to spin.
Meet the Starting Lineup 2018 Ford F-150: Ah, the crown jewel of Canada’s working-class rigs. The aftermarket is eyeing up the new OE grille, headlight, and taillight design. And fear not, we consumers will gorge ourselves on a gourmet spread of side steps, running boards, truck bed protection, and cargo management from Westin, LUND, Extang, and DECKED. A highlyanticipated addition for this model year? A diesel option debut that will have a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6. That’s sure to wet the whistle of every MBRP, aFe POWER, and BD Diesel fan.

But it’s not all work and no play. For the team at Air Design, the F-150 is a stout platform with fine lines, ideal for premium truck styling. “The marketdominating F-150 pickup complemented with Air Design´s new Ground Effects Kit or a redesigned Off-Road Body Kit will generate exceptional excitement, and it’ll give us a great opportunity to

paycheques that when there’s a tough job to do, this three-lettered badge is up for the task. The 2018 model is expected to have minor cosmetic changes, like moving away from the crosshair grille and adjusting its bed dimensions. We’re splitting hairs here, but those tweaks are worth noting because sometimes less is more. “The Ram applications are some of the fastest moving SKU’s for us, and really the rest of the aftermarket, in Canada. A new model will be sure to drive business,” said Andy Nephew, National Sales Manager at Retrax. 2018 Toyota Tundra: Slow and steady wins the race, right? Ford, GM, and Ram emblems traditionally steamroll the competition in the full-size truck market. But Toyota’s been poised in its approach, building a loyal Tundra following throughout the years. The 4.6-litre V8 comes standard and “with its available deck rail system, easy lower and lift
showcase our complete line of speciality accessories for truck personalization,” said Miguel Avalos, President of Air Design. 2018 GMC Sierra: The lightweight-champion Sierra still sports a V6, but now it comes standard with a rearview camera and voiceactivated infotainment system to give owners a taste of the finer things in life and, it goes without saying, improved safety. Aftermarket brands like Pendaform, Weather Guard, and BEDSLIDE help this truck serve double duty as a work horse and playmate. 2018 Chevrolet Silverado: Not much has changed for Chevy’s staple model except for the addition of safety features like advanced tire pressure monitoring. That’s alright by us when the same old V6 durability is worthy of Bob Seger’s classic “Like a Rock” reference. And while on the topic of like a rock, heavy-duty front-end protection with a Fab Fours bumper or Go Industries grille guard shields the hefty investment from damage. 2018 Ram: A reputable contender in a competitive Canadian truck market, the 2018 Ram is the “enforcer” of all trucks. We’d still bet our

tailgate, and available 10,200-lb. towing capacity, Tundra is built for the work site and the weekend,” said the automaker.

As for the Truck Hero family of brands, they’re eager to outfit every new truck coming off the lot. “Truck Hero will be producing products to fit the new 2018 F150, Silverado, Sierra, and Tundra. As these 2018 trucks are hitting the dealership lots in August, Truck Hero truck bed covers and accessories will be made available in the fall,” continued Henley. 2018 Nissan Titan: Another underdog. Despite the Titan being named Truck of the Year during 2017, the halfton sales don’t measure up against the dominance of the Big Three. Perhaps alterations to the “King Cab” will have sceptics singing a new tune? The Titan is a rock-solid ride with a fair price tag—it’s worth the test drive. 2018 Honda Ridgeline: The Honda Ridgeline has quietly forged a place for itself within the mid-size truck market. Its car-like manners, spacious five seats, in-bed trunk, and overall smart design has converted Canadian consumers into true believers, and we expect unit sales to continue upward. An intelligent AWD feature, respectable 5,000 lb. towing capability, and good fuel economy secure its spot on this 2018 watch list.
Nissan Titan
2018 Dodge Durango SRT: Soccer moms beware, the aftermarket is hot and bothered by more than just pickups and Daisy Dukes. The SUV/CUV scene is sizzling across North America, and it’s is positioned to heat up even more. But one in particular stands out among the rest with its equally loved and feared SRT badge. “The new 2018 Dodge Durango SRT is going to be a fun, spacious SUV with a lot of power, and it’ll be owned by customers who want the sound to match. Magnaflow provides unique options like top quality stainless-steel materials, black coated finishes, wide-open designed mufflers, and a lifetime warranty that will put you at ease,” said Kathryn Reinhardt, Marketing Manager at Magnaflow. Products to Match The global market is aggressively geared toward ease of access and use, cost effectiveness, and environmental consciousness. And that’s a true statement from ridesharing services like Uber to electric car developments and autonomous technology. Yet, the oversized, highlypowered, and often times less economical pickup is still a favourite among North American consumers because truck owners are quite literally changing the game, and that requires an aftermarket as dynamic as the game itself. “Here at Undercover, we are always excited when new trucks or 4x4s hit the market. New vehicle applications are critical to the success of the aftermarket industry, as they set the stage for us to push forward with innovative new products each year,” said Michael McLaughlin, National Sales Manager at Undercover. Case in point, the company’s all-new Ridgelander—an exceptionally versatile truck bed cover that caters to every lifestyle. Likewise, we suspect WARN will continue to produce the most time-honoured recovery items on the market, and names like N-FAB, FX Products, Dee Zee, DECKED, and Air Design will lead the way in both function and fashion. Automakers delivered—now sit back and watch the aftermarket conjure magic. 44 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017

ROAD TEST: HONDA RIDGELINE
Truly Different Story by Jordan Allan, photos courtesy of Honda Canada hen the original Honda Ridgeline first hit the market in the 2006 W model year, it was clear this was a truck that was a little different than basically everything else that was currently being offered. It featured full-time AWD rather than selectable 4WD, had a funky integrated cargo box design and boasted a uni-body platform and fully independent suspension all of which basically go against traditional truck features. Due to this the truck picked up a loyal following as it drove more like a car or SUV and was ideal for urban environments, until production was halted back in 2014. Now here in 2017, the Ridgeline is
a 6-speed auto that produces 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. As previously mentioned, power is put to the ground via a full-time allwheel-drive system with multiple terrain settings instead of traditional 4x4. Along with the independent suspension, this provided a pretty sound driving experience when taken on a curvy rural highway or driving through the city which is not something to be said for every pickup. Something that must be brought up when talking about the Ridgeline is the innovative cargo-carrying methods Honda have continued on from the first-gen that really offer you something no other pickup on the market does. For starters, the rear of the truck bed features something of a trap door that exposes a lockable in-bed trunk that is surprisingly deep and gives you a spot to look up valuables that you don’t want cluttering up the cabin. The truck bed can be accessed from its twoway tailgate that drops down traditionally or swings open offering you immediate access to the rear. Finally, when the rear seats are folded up an ample amount of storage space is found that is surely big enough for a few sets of golf clubs or other gear. The rest of the interior is well-laid out and refined but does nothing that will truly amaze you and in terms of space, I found the seating position and front seats to be rather comfortable but also found that it was somewhat lacking in headroom.
back and carries many of the same car-like characteristics that made the first generation so successful but this time with a more rugged, truck-like appearance to go along with it. The Ridgeline now offers bold new looks that, although is reminiscent of its predecessor, has swung more towards the traditional truck-like appearance… albeit in Honda’s own way. The rear of the truck offers a sharp new appearance that looks very similar to other truck offerings, but it’s the front end that garnered some mixed reactions. If you were to look at the Ridgeline from dead centre right in front, you would swear you were looking a Honda Pilot SUV as there appears to be very little to distinguish the two. When coupled with the traditional truck-like rear end is where I believe these mixed reactions have come from. In saying that, I’m sure there are many people who love the trucks new look and given the fact that it offers many characteristics of an SUV rather than a pickup maybe it’s only fitting that it looks that way as well. Under the hood of the Ridgeline is a 3.5L SOHC V6 engine paired to 52 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017
The new Ridgeline has entered a newly ultra-competitive segment that features the (somewhat) recently re-birthed GM Colorado/Canyon twins, Toyota’s Tacoma, Nissan’s Frontier, and Ford’s Ranger on its way back in the near future. Given that the Ridgeline is truly unlike any of these and offers the driving experience of a car or SUV with the capabilities of a pickup, it should garner some attention to those looking for a vehicle of that ilk, especially if you live near a big city.
RV-ING: 2018 PLEASURE WAY PLATEAU TS
Enjoyable Experience Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
P
leasure-Way Industries was started in 1986 by Saskatchewan RV dealer Dean Rumple as an answer to his frustration with the Class B products available to him at the time. Rumple found that his dealership was doing repairs and adding improvements to newly received product so often that it suddenly dawned on him that building a Class B, his way, was the answer to this problem. Thirty years later he is still at it. His latest creation is Pleasure-Way’s 2018 Plateau TS. It’s built on the diesel-powered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 3500-series frame (aka as a one-ton) with dual rear wheels. Its standard 3.0L turbo-diesel engine is both powerful and economical. With its substantial torque, I felt no lag on hills and it accelerated easily into highway traffic. I did a 0-100 km-h test
and recorded a loaded time of 17.9 seconds from a dead stop. For fuel consumption, I recorded a best highway-only number of 12.6 L/100km and a best combined city/highway consumption of 13.5L/100km. The cab, built by Mercedes, shows off its commercial design origin with features designed to make the lives of paid drivers, who spend full working days in the truck, comfortable and efficient. Fortunately, these features serve travelling RVers just as well. Picking up the Pleasure-Way Plateau TS in London, ON, we turned northwest towards Lake Huron and two days of beachcombing, with a visit to a travelling rodeo thrown in just for fun. And that’s my first observation of the Plateau – it’s easy and fun to drive. Over the two days we spent with it, we drove nearly 800 kilometres; sightseeing in this unit on any road – highway or byway - is stress-free. Touring through beach communities, we were curious about what homes we might see down on the beaches. Often, these access roads were single lane, twisting and winding around the dunes and points. We drove the Plateau down any one that appealed to us. My point here is that this vehicle will go anywhere a car will. It drives smaller than it is, and with its square shape and clear sightlines, it fits easily. Opening up the interior space is the large passenger-side sliding door. This portal is not only an entry, it’s a way of opening up the living space to include the outside which is covered by the legless power awning. This impression is confirmed by the kitchen counter that extends into the door opening, making for a convenient serving station – food

going out, dishes and condiments going back in. A smart idea is installed into the side of this counter. It’s a 7-inch touchscreen that controls all the lighting in the unit, the awning, pumps, HVAC, water heater and fantastic fan. It also shows all the levels and power stats – all in one place. In the living/sleeping area, a second touchscreen duplicates these functions; it’s also backlit for night operation. Our unit was also equipped with a side door (and rear door) roll-up screen (optional at $780 each). These serve an obvious purpose but I noted a nice feature in addition to the zippered entrance on the side door – a magnetic strip on the right side allows a quick one-handed pass-through and instant closing without touching the zipper. Standard comfort features found in this cab include: adjustable hi-back driver and passenger seats (passenger seat can swivel 180-degrees to face the coach interior), tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, full HVAC system, cruise control, high beam assist, keyless entry, power windows, locks and mirrors, Becker in-dash Nav and Audio system with Bluetooth (includes a backup camera). Safety systems built into the Sprinter Chassis cover what most people would expect in a commercial van, such as four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, driver and passenger air bags and smart steering wheel controls. Past this, stability and traction controls are always on and work in the background to keep the van going straight in all weather conditions. They are designed to brake each wheel independently and automatically to prevent an unintended spin-out. 56 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017
The seating position in the cab is comfortable, and the seat height and large windshield offer excellent sight lines. In fact, the Sprinter is just tall enough to let you see over most of the traffic ahead of you. Driver seat, steering and mirror adjustments were equally good for me (at a hefty six-foot) as they were for my wife (at a petite five-feet tall). Most features in the Plateau coach body do double-duty. The bathroom is also the shower thanks to a step-in floor pan and waterproof surfaces. The living room is also the bedroom thanks to a motorized couch that folds flat for sleeping. This is the same seating used for the eating area and the dining table can be removed after dinner to accommodate cushions between the fixed ottomans to complete 70 x 76-inch King Bed. The standard 24-inch flat screen TV is wall-mounted to be viewed here best, whether you’re sitting or lying down. Signals are fed to it from the Winegard Rayzar digital antenna, a direct cable hookup or from the standard blue-ray player. This, then, is the nature of the Class B. Space is at a premium but that doesn’t mean the buyer has to miss out on any comfort features; smart design sees to that. This assessment also includes a few things you can’t see – such as an Eco-Ion smart lithium battery system and an on-board 20.5 KW Onan LP generator with 2,000-watt inverter. Our test unit was also equipped with an optional 285-watt solar package that fed the battery array. While we spent the weekend plugged in at

the campground, these three energy systems would make days of dry camping possible. Other space-saving devices include a tankless ondemand Truma water heater and underbody propane tank (where you’ll also find a standard BBQ quick gas connection). The galley is another model of efficiency, yet it feels surprisingly large, in part because of the length of the Corian counter that extends into the side doorway, plus a flip up extension on the living room side and the covers for the stove and sink. The stove is a two-burner flush-mount unit with a splash guard that flips up next to the deep sink with integrated matching counter-top cover. Note, there is no vent hood above the stove, but we found the fantastic vent pulled the steam from our corn boil out quite well. As you swivel around, you’ll face the three-way two-door fridge/freezer with the High Pointe convection microwave grill right above it. Storage above the windows is all-natural maple cabinetry with radius doors and
top mounted hardware that holds the doors open – really nicely finished. Below the kitchen counter, drawers and cupboards are equally wellfinished with excellent hardware. Storage space in the Plateau is at a premium; however, what there is, is well-designed and has good access. Just don’t figure on taking a whole winter’s worth of gear south with you. Unless, of course, you tow a trailer, which is a possibility. So while it’s not something I did I certainly noticed the standard trailer hitch with its 5,000-lb tow rating. With the torquey diesel engine, this option opens up a number of recreational possibilities for the Pleasure-Way owner. My first thought is taking along my power sports - motorcycles in summer and snowmobiles in winter. However, whatever you decide to do with the Plateau, remember this is a unit that is meant to be driven – an experience you’ll quickly come to enjoy.

There must be something pretty big on the other end of that rope.
In a way, that truck looks kind of peaceful.
Would’ve loved to see how the driver made it down.
This has to be one of the most interesting high-centres we’ve ever seen.
The truck pulling him out looks to be a little small.
They look to be pulling the truck on the left out of there when it’s pretty obvious the truck on the right is in more trouble.
We’re sure that most of you have had the misfortune of getting stuck while out on a weekend adventure. So send us your photos of your adventure to stucktrucks@rpmcanada.ca and if we use your photos we’ll send you a cool Trucks Plus hat! 62 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2017
