model builds on the already off-road oriented Colorado ZR2 and takes its capability to a new level. The ZR2 Bison features five skid plates which cover the engine oil pan, fuel tank, transfer case and front and rear locking differentials in order to protect these elements while driving over rough and rocky terrain. The front and rear both feature AEV-designed stamped steel bumpers with the front bumper featuring winch provisions and fog lights while the rear boasts recovery points integrated into it. A flow-through “CHEVROLET” lettered grille replaces the usual bowtie, while 31-in. Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac off-road tires wrap around the Bison-specific 17x8-in. aluminum wheels to give it a more aggressive look and to even further increase off-road competence. Bison decals are featured on the bed sides, while an AEV Bison logo is featured on the tailgate, floor liners and head restraints. The ZR2 Bison will duplicate the full equipment list of the Colorado ZR2 including the aforementioned front and rear locking differentials, Multimatic DSSV dampers, off-road locker protection, cast-iron control arms and Autotrac transfer case. Also featured is a modified rear axle with a 3.42 ratio, front and rear tracks widened by 3.5-in. and a factory suspension lift that is a full 2-in. over a Colorado Z71. Additional Bison options include the 2.8L Duramax Turbo-diesel engine paired to a six-speed auto transmission, and a choice of crew or extended cab configurations. The snorkel featured in the photos will be available as a third-party accessory from AEV and is ideal for air filtration while driving on dusty trails. The 2019 Colorado ZR2 Bison is set to go on sale in January of next year.

More of Everything

The all-new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado offers eight trim levels and six different engine and transmission combinations

rucks, currently, have never been more important to a manufacturer’s bottom line. Not only T because they are selling in ever-increasing numbers, but because there just doesn’t appear to be a price ceiling. Customers keep loading up new pickups with luxuries that only a few years ago were found only in sedans. It’s this hunger for constantly increasing content that pushes prices up, as these up-market extras quickly add up. Of course, this is where builders earn the most money.

Ford knows this full well. They currently offer nine distinct trim packages and an extensive list of options. So, each year in this pickup war, Chevrolet responds to Ford’s increasing number of trim levels with their own increase in luxury, accessories, special editions and personalization.

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer, additional photos courtesy GM Canada

This is the current state of the heated pickup market and it shows no sign of cooling down. For 2019, that’s why we not only have an all-new generation of Silverado (the fourth since 1999) but also, simply put, more of everything. The new Silverado now offers eight trim levels, and six different engine and transmission combinations, including for the first time, a new Duramax 3.0-litre turbo-diesel. These trim packages not only offer groups of conveniences, but they also cover the very necessary work truck (WT) market right up to the opulent High Country. Yet, within each trim level, customers still have ample options when it comes to custom building the truck they need. Cabs, box lengths, powertrains, gearing and sundry equipment – Chevy does not believe in “one size fits all.

Given that Chevrolet has now been building trucks for a hundred years, for this generation of Silverado, Chevy is mining its history and adding elements from previous gens of trucks. The notable one is the “Chevrolet” name stamped on the tailgate that harks back to the ‘50s and ‘60s. The centre grille-mounted bowtie is also iconic; however, the new look is anything but as rounded as the designs of previous trucks. This new body is square, tall and slab-sided, offering a powerful profile. Sitting on up to 33-inch tires just amplifies that impression. Though this next-gen Silverado is larger than its predecessor (1.2-inches wider, 1.5-inches taller, 1.7-inches longer, with 3.9inches added to the wheelbase) it is lighter by some 450 lb. A mixed materials approach to construction is the reason for this. Strategic use of aluminum and more hi-strength steel have lowered the weight, yet the frame is actually 10 percent more rigid than the outgoing model. We all know that the cargo box on the truck is what makes it a pickup – a feature that’s been the same from day one. It’s also the feature which changes the least, generation to generation, but not this time. Chevy has spent time and money on the business end of this new Silverado, firstly by increasing the cargo volume to bestin-class. By widening the inner box walls to mimic the outer body panels, they have increased the available space by as much as 20 percent. This space also boasts 12 fixed tie-down points with a sheer force of 500 lb each (twice the previous rating). There are also nine moveable tie-downs. To see what you‘re doing in the box, it has task lighting and a 120V power outlet in the sidewall. Getting in and out of the box is also easier now, with even larger cut-outs in the CornerStep bumper and large stake-hole handholds. Below it all is the rolled steel bed floor which is now using an even higher grade of hi-strength steel. Silverado also offers four versions of its tailgate - a standard, manual unsprung gate, a manual gate with lift-assist, a power locking version, and even a power up-and-down gate with automatic release. Each of these is lockable. Making use of this additional space in the new bed are available storage bins that fit over the wheelwells, which still leave the floor clear.

New Weight Stickers in GM trucks W

ho doesn’t worry about their weight? But, I’m not talking about that nagging ten pounds you’d like to drop. No, I’m talking about the weight problem you have with your tow vehicle. You know, the one where you “think” you know what the truck will tow. And, frankly, manufacturers have never made getting an exact number easy. Between the boasting in commercials and obscure, difficult-to-find information on websites and in the owner’s manual - is it any wonder that most owners really aren’t sure what their truck will tow? But there is a new initiative, from General Motors, that is rather exciting in its simplicity. A door jam sticker that gives a truck owner the exact weight limits for that truck. AND, by “that truck” I do mean the exact truck (as it’s built with its unique combination of cab/box/powertrain/gearing/tires and options) as defined by the VIN number on the sticker.

Multiple powertrains are another feature that gives customers necessary choices, and Chevy has some veterans and also some very new mechanicals in its 2019 lineup. I’ve already mentioned the coming diesel; however, that isn’t till late in the year and details are being kept under wraps till then. Gas engines include updated versions of the 5.3L and 6.2L V8s along with an all-new 2.7L V6 turbo engine that is now the base engine on the high-volume Silverado LT and RST. It offers 22 percent more torque and greater fuel efficiency than the 4.3L V6. However, this V6 and the 5.3L V8 will still be the chief options on the entry-level and WT models.

The numbers on this sticker are not generalizations or roundabouts – these numbers are exact and belong to that truck individually – like a birthmark. Also, the General has included max tongue weight, which is brilliant. Good for you, GM.

An exciting development in fuel efficiency for this new gen is a technology called Dynamic Fuel Management. Unlike the current Active Fuel Management (which runs as either an 8-cylinder or 4-cylinder), the new DFM can fire

Looking at the sticker, this truck will tow GCWR less Curb Weight (but remember to add people and cargo weight - say 500 lb) for a very real figure of 8,969 lb.

on as few as two cylinders. Studies have shown that under normal usage, a DFM-equipped engine was running on fewer than eight cylinders 60 percent of the time. This translates to a 9-percent improvement in fuel efficiency over the old AFM system.

As to what means what; here is a quick refresher: GVWR – Gross vehicle weight rating The GVWR refers to the maximum weight a vehicle is designed to carry including the net weight of the vehicle with accessories, plus the weight of passengers, fuel, and cargo. GCWR – Gross combined weight rating A vehicle’s GCWR is a specific weight determined by the manufacturer to be the maximum weight of a loaded tow vehicle and its attached loaded trailer. GAWR – Gross axle weight rating The gross axle weight rating (GAWR) is the maximum distributed weight that may be supported by an axle of a road vehicle. Typically, GAWR is followed by either the letters FR or RR, which indicate front or rear axles respectively.

The stretched body on the new Silverado translates to more room inside the cab – starting with an added 3-inches of rear-seat legroom for a total of 43.4inches, which almost equals the 44.5-inches available to the front seat driver and passenger. The other benefit of more space is storage, and Silverado has built new features into the second row, starting with two 10L bins integrated into the seat backs. Under the rear seat there is a moulded, compartmentalized, 24L storage tray. In the front, by going with a traditional gearshift lever, the entire centre console/armrest is a massive storage space organized into several transforming spaces that will accommodate pretty much anything your daily life requires – along with all the electrical inputs and outlets necessary to run them. The interior itself is better seen, than described. However, it is, without a doubt, the best interior Chevy has ever put forward. For transmissions there are three versions. Each is coupled to the appropriate engine, as needed. At the lower end (power and price-wise) is the automatic

340 lb to a hefty 2,500 lb. Now, to handle these new weights, Chevy has added some very welcome and slick towing technologies. First, up to four cameras offer different views while hitching. This includes hitch guidance lines on the centre display and a choice of views. After the driver has lined up the hitch and shifted to park, the parking brake sets automatically – avoiding that slight roll that wrecks the alignment. An optional feature is a trailer tire temp and pressure monitor. An industry first, this system allows the driver to keep an eye on the trailer tires. A new trailer light check system runs the lights in sequence as you watch. This feature can be activated from inside the truck or via a MYChevrolet Trailering App on your Smartphone. The new 2019 Chevrolet Silverado will be coming to dealers this fall. Pricing for Canada has not been set at this time. six-speed. The new base 2.7L turbo pushes power through an eight-speed gearbox; it also is the main choice for the 5.3L V8. The new ten-speed is found on the 6.2L V8 and will power the coming 3.0L turbo-diesel. Most truck owners know, and certainly sense, that each generation of 1500-series pickup is becoming more and more towing-capable. This is regardless of brand. They tow more weight, handle larger trailers and, thankfully, the builders are adding the tech and safety features needed to handle these larger loads safely. It’s actually funny that many of us still refer to this size of truck as “half-tons” – we left that territory long ago. The new numbers for the 2019 Silverado are 12,200 lb - towing (max), up 400 lb over 2018. New maximum payload has increased

very region of Canada has unique geographic features, ones that set them apart from the rest. However, while that description also applies to our newest province – Newfoundland and Labrador – when you are there, there is also a vaguely perceptible “other world” sense about the place. I was thinking this as I drove the new 2019 GMC Sierra from St. John’s through the Avalon Peninsula on my way to Conception Bay. Perhaps this is why GM chose the “Rock” for this debut. They very much want to present the Sierra as having a different feel from other brands, but mostly from its other in-house version, the Chevy Silverado. The Sierra’s big sister, which is also new this year, has in some ways stolen the Sierra’s thunder by debuting first; it was rolled out as part of the 100th anniversary celebrations for Chevrolet trucks. So, while this later Sierra release could be considered a second act, there are aspects of the Sierra that do make it different. These are vaguely perceptible at first, but then, like Newfoundland itself, they make themselves known in a way that’s indelible. Style-wise, Sierra continues its separation from the Silverado – a direction that started well over a decade ago. For 2019, the new grille is upright and dominant with a proportional chrome three-bar pattern (Denali, though, continues to get the exclusive “cheese grater” look). The new lights are large and C-shaped, anchoring the taller hood to the powerful shoulders on the truck’s front end. The wheels have moved closer to the body corners, making it “look” that much longer. These body features are in sharp contrast to the slick, flatter, pulled back look of the new Silverado. The truck body is actually larger than the old model, with the small space increases mostly being devoted to the interior comfort of passengers. For instance, the 2019 Crew Cab has nearly three inches of additional rear-seat legroom 22 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2018

compared to the previous model. Other new exterior design elements include bright chrome side window surrounds, integrated dual exhaust tips and a wider range of available tires (18, 20 and 22-inch options). Still, while the look matters, if you want to set a product apart from its competition, you have to give it exclusive features. GMC has now done that. Starting at the business end of this new truck, you’ll see that GM has invested in two very unique new features, neither of which will be shared with Silverado. First, a convertible tailgate with multiple functions, and second, an industry-first carbon-fibre cargo box. The new convertible tailgate is called the MultiPro. It features six unique functions and positions. The key is the split function that folds half the gate down to create a second tier for loading and/or to be used as a backstop for long cargo. If the tailgate itself is down, the split function now creates an extra-wide step up into the cargo bed, as well as a cut-out for closer bed access. The weight capacity is 375 pounds and the tailgate will also function as a workstation. This fits nicely with the addition of

CarbonPro, is not a standard feature and it will cost more as an option. The standard bed continues to be made of roll-formed steel. This is where it remains to be seen how much value customers are willing to pay for a truck bed. However, having the option is revolutionary. This material is tougher than steel or aluminum. Putting a hole through it is virtually impossible – but should it happen, it can be repaired with a propane torch. When I first saw this bed in Detroit, I had a chance to speak to a director of the company (Continental Structural Plastics) that developed this bed for GMC. We talked about how tough it was and

an 110V outlet added to the box nearby. This tailgate will be standard equipment on Denali and SLT trucks. Working with the tailgate at our lunch stop, it struck me that these innovations are the inevitable next-level evolution of the one-piece tailgate. I mean, ever since the early days of trucks, tailgates have doubled as work benches, picnic tables and bleachers. We have always used them for more than just keeping cargo in the bed; now, the GM engineers have made it easier and more convenient to do what we’ve always been doing. The second big deal is this new formed one-piece bed that uses purpose-specific carbon-fibre composite. Once complete, it is 62 lb lighter than the base steel version on the Sierra. GMC is claiming best-in class dent, scratch and corrosion resistance for this innovation – and with good reason. Carbon-fibre is one of those materials normally associated with highperformance race cars and fighter jets. It’s very strong, yet very light – both traits that will benefit any truck cargo bed. This box, called the

he told me that one of the tests they had subjected it to was loading a snowmobile with a steel-pick studded track into the truck bed, starting it and then pinning the throttle - spinning that track - in place, with those hardened 2-inch steel picks tearing at the floor. This uniquely Canadianish torture test did not damage the material. Personally, I can tell you I have shredded steel, aluminum and bed-liners doing the same thing – well, actually trying not to. For power – this is where GMC and Chevy do share – new versions of the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 engines will be joined by an all-new 3.0L inline-six

information to the in-cab trailering screen. A new trailer light test and diagnostics system is included too. Inside, the Sierra offers another industry first. A 3x7-in. heads-up display projecting vehicle info onto the windshield within the driver’s sight-line. The standard 8-inch infotainment screen offers a new Smartphone-like experience, faster responses and improved voice recognition. This screen also stitches various camera angles together for a bird’s-eye view of the truck. Also new is Adaptive Ride Control (offered on Denali). Using real-time monitoring of road and driver inputs, it reacts (in milliseconds), adjusting shock damping on-the-fly for the smoothest ride. turbo diesel engine (very late availability). The 6.2L and 3.0L engine will be paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. But past the usual updates, GM has unveiled a new fuel saving system called Dynamic Fuel Management. This industry-first technology enables the engine to operate in 17 different power patterns (using from two to eight cylinders) all governed by demand. DFM will be available on both the 6.2L and the 5.3L V8s.

No conversation about a Sierra would be complete without talking about the Denali trim package. Since its debut in a 2001 Sierra, it’s taken on a life of its own. This organic marketing coup happens only occasionally in the automotive world; GM knows it and is working to exploit it. They are pumping even more upscale styling and materials into the truck and expanding its stand-alone character by including a prominent Denali nameplate on the tailgate.

Driver-assist technologies are new and found throughout the new Sierra. Key among these is an electronic trailering system called ProGrade. Included in its features is a hitch-view camera with zoom feature for hooking up; side-view cameras to see down the side of the truck and trailer; also an auxiliary camera may be mounted on the back of the trailer for an in-cab view of what’s behind you. A nice touch is a new Auto Electric Parking Brake Assist which automatically applies the parking brake as you shift into park; preventing that one-inch lurch that takes you off the ball. Also part of the package are wireless tire pressure sensors that when installed on the trailer wheels relay tire pressure and temperature

For the off-road crowd, GMC has decided to add a new Sierra spin-off, the AT4. It is billed as a premium vehicle that holds its own off the beaten path. To that end it gets a 2-inch factory lift, upgraded Goodyear DuraTrac tires (up to 20-inches) and an overall look that can best be described as “blacked-out.” These cues come on top of the standard off-road features of Sierra, namely, Rancho shocks, locking rear diff, two-speed transfer case, skid plates, traction select system and hill descent control. Pricing for the new 2019 GMC Sierra has not been released yet. It’s due in showrooms late this fall.

mmediately after we installed the 4-in. lift kit and 35-in. tires on our 2018 F-150, as showcased last issue, we realized that we had to put some serious effort in to getting in and out of the truck. Our truck did not come with any factory sidebars, so we found ourselves literally having to jump to get in, as the lift and tires had obviously significantly increased the distance between the ground and the cab of the truck. After doing some research, we reached out to our friends at Enthuze and they were generous enough to provide us with a set of their 4-in. Blackout Series Side Bars. These side bars feature a sleek black powder coat finish that would perfectly integrate into our truck in terms of appearance and also provide us with a safe, wide step that would eliminate the need for us to jump in and out of our truck. After they arrived, we went to see the guys over at Action Car and

The actual installation process was a very quick and easy one and in no time we were able to effortlessly step into the truck and head back home. The bars feel very sturdy and are wide enough that you don’t feel like you might slip, and rather than simply integrate into our truck’s exterior appearance, they improved it by adding a rugged, yet functional upgrade. The powder coat finish allows us to not have to worry about rust or corrosion in the future, while the aggressive custom polyethylene step pads provide sure footing in all situations. We would like to express huge gratitude to the folks down at Enthuze for providing us with the bars and to Kevin and his team at Action in Port Kells for a seamless installation. 2. FEATURE: SILVERADO IN THE ARCTIC

Well Worth It The all-new Silverado is put through its paces in the Canadian Arctic

Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

I

t’s just a gravel road. It’s rough, but no rougher than many roads scattered across the country. So why drive it and write about it? For Chevrolet Canada, I suppose it’s about living up to its tagline “find new roads,” and this gravel road is one of the newest in the country. But the main reason we recently drove the new 2019 Chevy Silverado north from the town of Inuvik NWT, was because of what this gravel road now connects to. This 138-km gravel “highway” has become the last link in a chain of roads that now connects (for the first time) all the rest of Canada to our third national coast on the Arctic Ocean. This “connection” has been a dream 150 years in the making. Since Confederation in 1867, each successive government has made it a priority to connect all of Canada’s regions by road and rail. Early on, uniting the Pacific and the Atlantic coasts was the priority, as this is where most of our people lived – that early push of a fledgling country was also a necessary effort to cement Canada’s claim of being a nation from coast-to-coast. The Trans-Continental railroad was completed in 1885, bringing British Columbia into our union. This monumental effort was followed by a never-ending program of road building in the decades that followed as Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta joined Confederation. This finally resulted in a joining of provincial highways into the continuous “Highway One” or Trans-Canada Highway. This was a federal effort that began in 1950 (soon after Newfoundland joined Confederation in 1949). However, the last sections of this 7,812-km road were completed in just 1971. This country is huge and it has taken us a while to join Canadians together – east to west. Meanwhile, the northern border of our country, the third coast, continued to be unreachable except by water, and then later by 34 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2018

air. But, with the discovery of more and more resources in the North, and the prospect of trans-arctic shipping becoming viable, our country’s eyes increasingly turned towards our last frontier. That’s why, as of 2018, Canada can honestly claim not only a presence but also a hard-surface, year-round connection to our communities on the Arctic coast. Today, a road-trip to the village of Tuktoyaktuk, North West Territories, situated on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, is possible from any starting point in Canada. Leaving from St. John’s, Toronto, Vancouver? No problem, get in your car and head north till you arrive in Tuk. This long-inhabited village situated in the delta of the Mackenzie River, far north of the Arctic Circle, is now on the only road that touches this most remote shore of our country. For me, though, time was short, so I flew from Edmonton to Yellowknife, then after a brief stop-over, another hour north to Inuvik. This town of some 3,000 people is already 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle and, until last year, was the end of the road. That road, the Dempster Highway, which runs northeast from Dawson City, Yukon, is its only connection to the rest of Canada and until recently the furthest north you could go by car. Picking up my new Chevy Silverado pickup at the airport, I headed up the new highway – destination the village of Tuktoyaktuk. The plan was to drive to Tuk, spend two hours there and return to Inuvik for the night. Being that it was already afternoon, I wondered why the rush – considering that I’d already spent more than 18 hours in airports (and in the air) to get to Inuvik. All this became clear when I arrived in Tuk later that day. There are no services for visitors in the village. No hotel or motel or lodge. No restaurant, not even a gaudy tourist-trap T-shirt shop. Frankly, travellers who make it to the end of the highway are still such oddities that it prompts locals to flag you down just to ask you where you are from. On the other hand, I realized as I drove through the hamlet that I was seeing a settlement in a pristine state, looking as it has for as long as it has existed.

As the inhabitants of Tuk have yet to take advantage of the coming tourists, there are no hotels, restaurants or gaudy tourist traps. This is a unique time capsule of Arctic life – though I fear it won’t last, as folks head up the highway just so they can say they did. The Inuvik–Tuktoyaktuk highway is known locally as Highway 10. As I said earlier, it’s a gravel road. That in itself is nothing special and as for the new Silverado, driving it was just fine. I have already reported on the new Silverado, so for this excursion it was the backdrop of the highway that made the trip special. So, I want to stress, it’s not implied that because a road is north of the Arctic Circle, it’s somehow more difficult to navigate than any gravel road anywhere else in the country. Still, what a place to do a truck review. In some ways, it was distracting, as I spent most of my time staring in awe at the landscape. I was fortunate to hit the height of the Arctic colour change season. In mid-September the grasses, moss, lichen and low shrubs turn a pastel of muted reds, silvers and dull greens. Very different from fall in southern climates. These colours, with the constant framework of water with ice just starting to form, were beautiful to witness. So, while it’s only 138 kilometres long, Highway 10 passes from boreal forest to the Tundra – losing all evidence of trees around half-way to Tuk. It is also the most winding road I think I have ever been on – as it runs through and around the water courses and lakes of the massive Mackenzie River delta. The turns are constant and there are just as many elevation changes as turns. For this reason (and the looseness of the gravel), the speed is restricted to 70 km/h. The road itself is a marvel; because of the water (you are never out of sight of some kind of water as you drive), there are 359 culverts under the highway and eight bridges over water courses.

the south, would be known as a swamp – or perhaps bayou. But, because of where it is, permanently frozen ground keeps everything stable year-round - till it’s disturbed, that is. This was a hard-learned lesson probably first encountered on a grand scale during the construction of the Al-Can highway during World War II. That project (working its way north to Alaska) employed southern road building techniques, only to discover that after the surface of the tundra was broken, overnight trucks and bulldozers sank into the thawed, bottomless bog. It was only then that they realized that any progress at all was due to the frozen ground they were on. But the most striking feature of construction is evident in the first few kilometres of travel – in places, you are over 30 metres above the surrounding land. The highway is built on massive berms of aggregate and gravels varying in height from place to place, all dependent on the need to preserve the perma-frost that lies below the construction. This one fact, preserving the perma-frost, created unique building challenges that then required very special solutions. Consider that the Mackenzie River delta, if it were in

Experiences like these were what forewarned the construction crews who tackled the Inuvik to Tuk highway. They started with the preservation of the perma-frost as their first priority. Under Highway 10 is a cloth membrane that insulates the ice, and above it is hundreds of tons of aggregate that do the same thing. Each section of the road was evaluated for heat sensitivity and then the appropriate amount of gravel piled on it – the intent being to never allow any heat from the road surface to penetrate to the ice.

Furthermore, there are hundreds of temperature sensors buried in the base of the road, sending a flow of data - a sort of early warning system should something go amiss. But, past all this, the most striking aspect of the construction was the timing. So as to take no chances with damaging the perma-frost, the build took place only during the winter months. For four years, construction was undertaken only from November to March, in constant temps of -24 to -60 C, often in complete darkness for weeks at a time. Crews worked 24 hours a day from both ends of the road till completion. Three-hundred million dollars later, the official ribbon cutting took place on Nov 15th of 2017, with this past summer seeing just the first trickle of tourist traffic arriving in Tuk – including me in the new Silverado in mid-September (when it was already -10C). This is an aspirational road – one that many Canadians and our cousins from further south will want to drive. It is destined to become one of those “I did it because it was there” stretches of road. If you do go – it’s well worth it.

RV-ING: 2019 SPORTSMEN 240THLE

Toy Hauler Story and photos by Howard J Elmer

H

ave you heard of the Four Corners? This label refers to the four geographic corners of the continental United States. Among motorcyclists, it’s an aspirational life goal to have ridden to all four. (For the curious these are: The southernmost point, Key West, Florida. The easternmost point, West Quoddy Head, Lubec, Maine. The westernmost point, Cape Alava, Washington. The northernmost point, Angle Inlet, Minnesota.) Looking at the new floor plan for the Sportsmen 240THLE, I see a way to accomplish this goal without having to acquire another motorcyclists’ badge of honour – the “Iron Butt” award. This unit will house you and your bikes till you are within comfortable striking distance of each of these points on the map. As most recreational riders know, you trailer to the town of Sturgis, unload and then ride down the main street, looking

as if you just pulled a 1,000-kilometre haul to reach this South Dakota destination. The label, Toy Hauler, speaks for itself, but I like to think it’s so much more than just a mode of transportation. So, though I’ve chosen to illustrate my point with motorcycles, this trailer will obviously accommodate whatever motorized hobby you are addicted too (OK, bicycles included). At almost 27 feet in length, this Sportsmen is ideal for two people and two bikes – though it will sleep four when needed. Its carrying capacity is 2,290 lb, (an important figure to consider if looking at this type of trailer), a number that needs to cover significant vehicle(s) weight plus the normal cargo items. The clear floor space inside, when configured for transport, is 17-feet, 3-11/16-inches. The key to any Toy Hauler is the rear entry door/ramp. On the Sportsmen, the full rear wall drops down (73 x 88-inches) at a reasonable angle. A flip-down checker plate covers the gap and hinges as well, for easy entry. Inside the set-up requires just one cargo-carrying modification – folding up the 72-inch bench/sleeper to lie flat against the wall. A freestanding table is easily moved to wherever it’s needed to be. The flooring is an Armstrong Linoleum called “ToughGuard” – an important item for a trailer that is going to have motorized traffic pulling in and out. To secure your toys there are heavy-duty D-rings in the floor. So, while transport is the primary function of the Toy Hauler, it’s worth mentioning that security is another less often thought-of feature. Normally, once at the campsite, toys are left outside, but they don’t have to be. Particularly, if you are out somewhere with your tow vehicle. A couple of expensive Harley-Davidsons is a tempting target for a thief. However, a few minutes not only puts them safely back inside the trailer for storage, but they are also out of sight.

A nice feature I noted on this trailer is a retractable screen wall (optional at $580.00) that would let you keep the ramp open for light, air and a feeling of inclusion at your campsite. There is also a storage rack mounted here at the rear wall of the bathroom, where items related to your hobby can be easily stored and accessed. The layout of this trailer can only be described as utility-based. The bath and kitchen occupy the driver’s side wall of the trailer, keeping the length as uncluttered as possible. Nevertheless, this size does accommodate a fixed Queen-size bed in the nose with enough space on either side to allow for night tables and hanging storage. Even an overhead shelf makes use of the curved trailer nose. (There is also a Murphy-bed option with this trailer if you need even more floor space). Below the bed, there is a flip-up storage space and even a reasonable sized pass-thru storage with two doors on the outside. The kitchen features a three-burner cook top, range hood with light and exhaust fan, microwave with turntable above it, and large overhead cabinets. The acrylic sink has a goose-neck faucet and a hard cover that adds to the counter space when in place. Below is more storage space, and a spot for the optional oven. The two-door, three-way refrigerator is 6.3 cubic feet in size. Next to it is a tall, deep pantry with adjustable shelves. The bathroom is what is surprising in this unit. By that I mean it’s large. The shower is big – with a full surround. The toilet doesn’t get in the way of movement, and using it won’t require any sideways manoeuvres. Meanwhile, the corner vanity/sink has a built-in medicine cabinet and also has enough floor space to actually allow two people simultaneous access to the facilities. Overhead, there is a skylight and power-vent. Bathrooms, as we’ve seen at the RV shows, continue to climb higher on buyers’ must-have lists and this one – if you think of the road grime you’ll need to wash off – certainly fits that bill. The HVAC and power system on this Sportsmen consist of a 13,500 BTU A/C unit, 30-Amp service, 20,000-BTU furnace, 6-gallon water heater and twin 20-lb LPG tanks. Insulation throughout the unit is listed as R-7, which makes it a three-season trailer. However, on my tester, there was a Climate package that featured heated, enclosed and insulated underbelly ($428.00). Given that many road trips start in cold climates and head to say, oh, maybe Bike Week in Daytona in February, these heated tanks will get you through the chilly states on your way south.

with stone chips, as will the covers for both the propane tanks and house battery. By the way, my tow vehicle for this test was the 2018 Toyota Tundra. This pickup features the 5.7L i-force V8 that makes 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. It drives a six-speed transmission with a 4.30 rear axle ratio. Depending on the cab/bed configuration, it can tow up to 10,000 lb, so

When it comes to standard comfort features, in general, I found the Sportsmen well-equipped. This included the K-Z Convenience Package (which is a mandatory option) that includes items like the Smart Arm Awning (that has exterior controls and a wind sensor), magnetic cargo doors, an Omni-directional HDTV Antenna, a black tank flush feature, LED light and battery disconnect in the storage area, and LED lights in the exterior speakers. Speaking of outside, that awning is 18-feet long which will make the outdoor living space shaded and comfortable. One last note – as these trailers sometimes need to get into “rough” campsite locations, I noted that the checker plate on the nose will help

it was more than adequate for the max weight of 7,000 lb on my test trailer. Without an equalizing hitch, I experienced just one-inch of squat, which is very good. As an aside, this trailer hits the towing sweet spot for almost every ½-ton pickup currently on the market, making it that much more desirable. Toyota’s tow package includes 4- and 7-pin connectors, a supplemental transmission cooler, trailer brake controller, tow-haul mode and a transmission fluid temp gauge. Also, front tow hooks – you never know. A relatively new feature is the 144-litre fuel tank, a welcome change for Tundra. Note: if you want “tow mirrors,” you have to order those separately.
