Toyota Introduces the Brand-New 2022 Tundra
T
oyota has very recently introduced the all-new 2022 Tundra pick-up truck that has been completely redesigned from the ground up and features two all-new technologically advanced powertrains. The truck has a very bold new look, highlighted by a pronounced grille and overall large front fascia. A new interior features an available panoramic roof, and all-new multimedia system featuring wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and over-the-air updates. The system is controlled through a centrally located standard 8-in. touchscreen or an available 14-in. touchscreen. Two new instrumentation panels are available on the new Tundra including the available 12.3-in. TFT panel or a combination meter that includes a 4.1-in. digital multi-information screen (MID) with analog readouts. The all-new Tundra will be available with two powertrain options: a twin-turbo V6 engine and a hybrid twin-turbo V6 with the hybrid option being the more powerful of the two. Both options will be paired to a 10-speed Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission with intelligence (ECTi) that features a sequential shift mode, uphill/downhill shift logic, and Tow/Haul driving modes. The twin-turbo V6 pushes out impressive power numbers in its own right with 389 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, while the hybrid version, called the i-FORCE MAX powertrain, pushes out an even more impressive 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft. of torque at only 2,400 rpm. It does this by utilizing a motor generator with a clutch located within the bell housing between the engine and 10-speed automatic transmission. This provides additional power while all of the normal hybrid functionality comes via the parallel hybrid components. The truck features a high-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame, aluminum-reinforced composite bed, and fully redesigned multi-link rear suspension which sees the rear leaf springs replaced with coil springs. We will have more on the brand new truck in a future issue. It is set to go on sale late in 2021.

The front end has under gone a noteworthy update that sees the lowering of the headlamps and revised daytime running lamps that will now feature animated lighting sequences when approaching, starting or walking away from the vehicle. Inside is probably where the biggest refresh was needed and Chevrolet has delivered with a bold new interior that incorporates 13.4-in. infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-in. diagonal digital and configurable instrument cluster. The new centre console also incorporates an available electronic shift controller in models with bucket seats and new available colours and seat designs further enhance the overall look. Front and rear e-lockers are featured as are specific off-road chassis and suspension calibrations and specific 33-in. off-road M/T tires. The ZR2 also boasts a new high-approach steel front bumper for off-road strength, durability and clearance. All of the 2022 Silverado models feature a long list of available safety and technology features and are offered with a plethora of engine options including a newly improved 2.7L turbo high-output engine, 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel, 5.3L V8 and a 6.2L V8. Honda Introduces Off-Road Focused TrailSport Trim Honda has recently introduced TrailSport, which it is calling the next chapter in its light truck direction, bringing a more rugged design and off-road capability to certain models in the brand’s light truck lineup. There is already some speculation as to which models will be the first to receive the new treatment, with many believing the Ridgeline pickup and Passport SUV are first up. Honda says the models will further advance the new rugged design direction of Honda truck products and become the halo for the off-road capability, versatility and durability that has long been engineered into them. The first models to incorporate the TrailSport treatment will feature rugged front and rear styling, durable cladding, and exclusive interior touches such as orange stitching, and available all-weather mats. The models will feature the i-VTM4 torque vectoring all-wheel drive system which helps off-road capability without sacrificing the on-road dynamics or comfort. “TrailSport will be the embodiment of Honda’s next chapter, to bring more tough and rugged capabilities to our light trucks,” said Steve Hui, Assistant Vice President Honda Canada. “TrailSport has the ruggedness and exclusive styling that will be popular with consumers seeking adventure, on road or off, and for those looking for increased toughness in their vehicles.”

2022 Truck/SUV Preview
Story by Howard J Elmer, photos courtesy of the manufacturers
R
V, boat and powersports (ATV, etc) sales have gone through the roof this year. The why of it is simple – folks have a severe case of cabin fever. They just want out – and these toys all support getting them out into the outdoor lifestyle. Of course, these purchases have to be moved out into the country somehow – so truck, SUV and crossover sales are amping up in lockstep.
being retired. The replacement is a 3.5L V6 twin-turbo that makes an impressive 389 horsepower and gives you a hybrid version option that pushes power up to 437 combined horsepower. First drives will happen in November.
Hyundai Santa Cruz – This small truck that Hyundai insists on calling a “Sport Adventure Vehicle” is bringing back the compact truck market. It will tow 5,000 lb, has four doors and a 5-ft bed (with the tailgate down). It’s well optioned up and has AWD modes. It’s on sale now.
All this is good for the economy, but unfortunately those who hunger for fishing, hunting, hiking, boating, canoeing and powersports adventures are being frustrated by the ongoing auto industry shortages (such as vehicle micro-chips) that have dealer lots looking very empty. Still, despite these manufacturing and supply chain difficulties, the auto industry is surging ahead with new technologies and designs. In fact, the 2022 model year promises to be a high-water mark for vehicle introductions and new tech – electric propulsion in particular. Here are just some of the headlines for the coming year: • Toyota is bringing a new Tundra to market with a new engine. • Compact pickups are back! Just look at the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz – and the Honda Ridgeline is updated. • Nissan has finally updated its mid-size Frontier – 17 years after the last generational intro. • Ford has beaten everyone to the punch by introducing the F-150 Lightning. That’s right – all-electric. • The new Bronco is here – Watch out Jeep! • Subaru unveils the Wilderness – it's wild! • Hybrid electric? Ford has one of those too. • Big SUVs are popular and GM and Nissan are responding. Trucks Toyota Tundra – it’s been seven years since the Tundra was updated. So, anticipation is high. Interior design and electronics have significantly been brought up to date, but the big news is that the thirsty 5.7L V8 is 10 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2021
Nissan Frontier - This mid-sizer was last updated in 2005. So, with such a long time since the last update, industry watchers and fans alike expect a lot from this 2022 model. We know it’s getting a new 3.8L direct injection V6 that makes 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. The transmission is a 9-speed automatic. Also the 4WD package comes with a High/Low transfer case and will offer specific off-road packages. Frontier comes as either a King Cab (short wb) or Crew Cab (long wb) and either a 5
or 6-foot bed. First drives are in October.
Ford Maverick - Hot on the heals of Santa Cruz, Ford released its new compact pickup. Resurrecting a name from the ‘70s – the new Maverick compact pickup is partly based on the current Escape. Maverick comes as a fivepassenger, four-door pickup only. It will be powered by a 2.5L hybrid that promises good fuel economy. It will also feature electronic AWD with drive modes like Mud/Rut and Sand, as well as Hill Descent Control. Honda Ridgeline – For 2022, the Ridgeline’s track is 20mm wider giving it a more planted stance. Its look and interior are updated as are the electronics. However, what didn’t change is the powertrain. Same 3.5L engine with the nine-speed transmission. This truck has car-like features and all-wheel drive. All new Ridgeline trims will also feature 18-inch wheels.

SUVs Late 2021 arrivals are the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Both become larger, more capable and also more connected. The key change to the Tahoe/Yukon architecture is a new independent rear suspension. GM also added Magnetic Ride Control and Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. Inside, there are more connected features like a standard 10-inch centre-mounted touchscreen and an 8-inch diagonal instrument cluster display. Of course, they have 4G Wi-Fi. Engine choices are the 5.3L or the Duramax 3.0L inline-6 diesel. The 6.2L V8, rated at 420hp, comes standard on High Country. The Max Trailering Package will include a high-capacity radiator and cooling fan, an integrated trailer brake controller, and a Hitch Guidance system with Hitch View feature.
Nissan Pathfinder – For 2022 the Pathfinder is a ground-up revamp, starting with a new face. Pathfinder also has a wider stance with blister fenders and a blunt, strong nose. Power comes from the 3.5L V6 and all-new 9speed automatic. Also, in Canada only the AWD version is sold. For the off-road, Nissan lets the driver choose a traction mode from the 7-position

Drive and Terrain Mode Selector. The new Pathfinder has a max towing capacity of 6,000 lb.
Ford Bronco – This is another late arrival this year – only now getting to dealers. The original Bronco debuted in 1966 as a small utility off-roader that was billed (for the first time ever) as a “sport utility vehicle.” Well, Ford has brought it back. It’s a two-door convertible off-roader closely resembling a Jeep Wrangler. There is also a four-door version of the Bronco; again, taking a page from the Jeep book that proved that a four-door SUV will sell well, if not better than a hard-core two-door model. Both Bronco two-and four-door models will provide an open-air experience. Two-door models come with a standard three-section roof system – left and right front sections and a rear section. Bronco, by the numbers, will have 11.6-inch ground clearance, a 29-degree break over angle, 37.2-degree departure angle and water fording capability of up to 33.5 inches. Two engines are offered - the base 2.3L EcoBoost and the 2.7L EcoBoost V6. Ford says, new Bronco owners can choose from a lineup of more than 200 factorybacked accessories for maximum personalization,
Powertrain and Technical updates
Electric Ford has shown the F-150 Lighting, a powerhouse that delivers 563 hp and 775 lb-ft of torque pushed through dual inboard electric motors. It will come standard with 4WD. Built with a standard F150 frame and body, it will support a max 2,000 lb payload and up to 10,000 lb of towing. A unique feature is Ford Intelligent Backup Power, which can turn the truck into a power source for your home. With the ability to offload 9.6 kW of power it can serve the average home for 3 days in the event of a blackout. The standard-range battery claims 370 km of estimated range and an extended-range battery is targeting 483 km of range. Arriving in Spring 2022, F-150 Lightning will be available in four series and two battery options. Hybrid Score another first for Ford this year with a fully hybrid engine based on the 3.5L EcoBoost. It’s called PowerBoost and is now available in the F150. It offers a combined range of approximately 1,100 km on a single tank of gas. Off-road packages Off-road packages are being adopted by crossover builders – like Subaru. It’s adding capability to its Forester and calling it the Wilderness. They claim it’s the most ruggedly built Forester ever. It comes with dual-function X-MODE system and all-terrain tires mounted on 17-inch black painted wheels. Also, it gains extra-tough body cladding and roof rails with increased static load capacity. There are also underbody skid plates along with increased suspension height. Inside, all-weather rubber floormats are easy to keep clean. OCT/NOV 2021 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 13

This Good
The all-new Hyundai Santa Cruz is good in so many ways Story and photos by Dan Heyman
T
he Hyundai Santa Cruz is a rare thing in the car world. It is not only a segment-buster, it’s kind of a segment creator – that’s if you listen to what Hyundai is saying. After all, a look at the Santa Cruz shows thus: a four-door cab, highish ride height, one of the most unique grilles in the business (unless you include its Santa Fe sibling…or the last-gen Toyota Venza), some sparkly 20-inch wheels and, above all else, a pick-up bed, turning this into one of the coolest-looking new vehicles to enter showrooms. So it’s a pickup then, right?
Well – again, according to the manufacturer – it isn’t. Pickups have a fiercely loyal customer base, and Hyundai isn’t about to fight that stigma. Thing is, it’s not a crossover, either, but a Sport Adventure Vehicle, aimed at young couples. Adventurous types that like to pack kayaks, tow SkiDoos and load mountain bikes. Or camping gear – Hyundai made that abundantly clear with all the Santa Cruzs they had decked out in all manner of outdoor accessories that can be had through the dealers. Of course, we all know what said adventurous types tend to drive crossovers and small SUVs, and it is precisely those vehicle segments that Hyundai expects to draw buyers from. So if not a pickup, a CUV, then? Well, that’s an option, but Hyundai is staying steadfast by “Sport Adventure Vehicle.” And why not? It’s been awhile since we’ve seen anything like it. It’s not a never before thing – remember the Ford Ranchero? How about the Dodge Rampage? Or Subarus Brat and Baja? But it’s been a while. Of course, it’s not that manufacturers haven’t tried, recently, to get a pickup bed into the hands of a dyed-in-the-wool CUV driver; Ford attempted it with the rebirth of the Ranger and earlier than that, we had the Chevrolet Colorado and more recently, the Jeep Gladiator. All great trucks – this is not to disparage them, by any means – but that’s the thing; they were trucks. Body-on-frame workhorses that, sure, had smaller engines than their big-selling siblings like the Ford F-150 or Chevrolet Silverado, but still drove like trucks. Not the Santa Cruz, though. This is a vehicle that shares a great many bits with the Tucson and Santa
20 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2021
Fe crossovers (in terms of exterior dimensions, it sits roughly between the two), so it’s a unibody platform, with the goal in mind to reduce the vibrations and bouncy ride associated with pickups. Of course, a bit it doesn’t share is its pickup bed, and make no mistake: while at four-feet on the floor it isn’t long, it’s far more than just a bucket dropped on where the rear cargo area usually is. It has cleats, it has bed lights, tie downs and even extra underfloor storage as seen in the Honda Ridgeline that can be filled with ice and drained thereafter. There’s a 115V power outlet and extra storage either side of the bed; there are even accessories that allow you to extend the bed, and each corner of the rear bumper features cutouts big enough to fit a steel-toed boot. The retractable bed cover is also standard, so you can keep things safe in there. No, it’s not as highly-stackable as a CUV’s cargo area would be and you’re always going to have to get out of the Santa Cruz to get at anything back there, but Hyundai has provided everything they can to make the change from CUV to SC as palatable as possible. We’ve discussed the exterior; it’s time to step inside this Sports Adventure Vehicle to see what’s what. In the spec you see here -- $44,799 Ultimate trim, which tops the line-up above Trend ($41,399) and Preferred ($38,499) – it gets the full load: leather seats that are heated and ventilated up front, surround view parking camera, LED headlights, 10.25-in. digital gauge cluster, blind-view monitor that turns your digital gauges into blind-spot cameras, and rain-sensing wipers.
In Ultimate spec, the gauge cluster is matched by a 10.25-in. widescreen. It’s touch-activated, as are all the controls on the panel that surrounds it. No dials or hard buttons here. It’s all touch, all the time. Personally, I like more traditional buttons as they’re a little easier to operate, but both the screen and touch panel in the Santa Cruz are responsive enough that I’m not too bothered by it; I just wish the haptic response when your inputs are received was a little more robust.
That’s in addition to standard all-wheel-drive, heated steering wheel, bed cover, and 2.5-litre turbo power. Power, meanwhile, that’s rated at 281 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque and the ability to tow up to 5,000 pounds; the Sea-Doo you see here is about 2,000 lbs, and the Santa Cruz handled it just fine. Keep it in Normal or Smart drive mode (whereby the Santa Cruz senses how you’re driving and adapts its shifting and throttle response to suit) and you’re good to go.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are, of course, standard, and there’s wireless charging as well. Or, if you don’t want your playlists or podcasts as the soundtrack of any given journey, then go ahead and make use of the “Sounds of Nature” app and let the calming crashing of waves or rain patter accompany you. That may seem like a frivolous add, but every time I’ve tested vehicles that include the feature, I’ve found myself using it one whole heck of a lot.
Space-wise, it’s similar to the Tucson up-front which means good front legroom, a surprising amount of headroom and a high seating position. That high seating position was one of the main goals in developing the Santa Cruz, as that high ride height means a good view out, and that’s important for any CUV driver Hyundai hopes to convert. The digital gauge cluster is a crisp affair, properly bereft of glare even though there’s no actual gauge hood. That also adds to the view out, but the finished product has the display looking a bit as if it’s kind of plugged in to its spot just above the steering wheel.
It comes as little surprise that the back seat is snugger than what you’ll find in a Tucson, but the headroom is fine and the bottom cushions flip up in a 60/40 split to reveal storage bins below. There is no central armrest back there, though, because behind the seat is the cabin’s rear wall and that’s all you’d see once you dropped the armrest. They could have gussied it up with a layer of carpet back there, but Hyundai seems to think it wasn’t a necessity. That bears contrast to what’s going on in the rest of the cabin, as much
OCT/NOV 2021 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 21
attention has been paid to sound-deadening in the wheel wells and ahead of the front bulkhead. The result, it turns out, is a nicely quiet affair that stood out as a highlight on the highway. The ride, meanwhile, stood out there and most everywhere else. Broken concrete, level crossings, speed bumps – absorption, absorption, absorption, with the only surface really getting it out of sorts a run of grooved concrete through a section of roadworks. I would jam it over the roughest, broken concrete I could find just to set it off but to no avail. The Santa Cruz’s off-road bent means a slightly higher ride height and the body roll that comes with that, but this is no deal-breaker, by any means. Off-road bent is right; in addition to that ride height, the H-Trac AWD system is a robust one, shuffling power to the wheels that need it depending on circumstance (and telling you it’s doing so with a handy display within the gauge cluster) to get you out of a slippery situation; we were given the chance to literally drive up a ski hill slicked by overnight rain and the Santa Cruz responded well. Even when starting from stop on the grade, there was little hesitation. Just select “Mud” mode (both the AWD modes and the powertrain modes are accessed via the same button and toggle switch), which automatically activates hill-descent control, and we were up and gone, no problem at all. What that means in practice, of course, is that while this may not be a boulder basher, it will give you little trouble on the forestry roads on the way to your favourite backcountry hiking spot. Then, on the way back home, you have all that power to keep you company. Mated to a quick-shifting eight-speed automatic, you have grunt in every gear, from stop, at-speed and so on. There’s a less-powerful naturally-aspirated engine available in other markets that we don’t get, but I’ll tell you what: I can’t say I miss that with a powertrain this good. Heck, forget the powertrain: “this good” is a phrase that can be used to describe pretty much everything about the Santa Cruz. It looks great, it drives really, really well, it’s capable and that pickup bed is the real deal. Hyundai has come up with a product – somewhat out of left field – that has achieved the goal of really offering a pickup alternative to CUV buyers. It’s a bullseye.

Hybrid Option
2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost Story by Benjamin Yong, photos courtesy of Jordan Allan and Ford Canada
W
ith Ford slowly and steadily electrifying its lineup over the last several years, from cars (formerly) to crossover SUVs, there’s no real surprise even the F-150 would one day ditch fossil fuels. Granted the zero emissions version isn’t in dealerships just yet, but a hybrid option — the only example in the segment right now — has finally arrived. And it’s great. Still based on the standard 14th generation truck platform, the partially electrified offering is sold as a PowerBoost model and available on the crew cab body style regardless of trim level whether base XL or Limited. Under the hood is a 3.5-litre bi-turbo V6 engine, complemented by a 35-kilowatt electric motor integrated right into the 10-speed automatic transmission.
kilowatts at an additional cost) for the Pro Power Onboard feature, which provides juice to in-cabin devices, or tools and toys plugged into the 120volt outlets found in the cargo bed. Although I personally didn’t hook up a trailer or anything else out back during my week in the press vehicle, the PowerBoost has a maximum towing capacity of 12,700 pounds. That’s 600 more pounds than the 3.0-litre diesel variant, and 2,600 more than the 2.7-litre EcoBoost V6. As with all 2021 F-150s, the interior has been completely overhauled. The all-new SYNC 4 infotainment system makes an appearance here
And who said being eco-friendly had to be boring? This latest Dearborn-built product also happens to be the most powerful within the full-size portfolio generating a combined 430 horsepower and 570 lb-ft of torque. The latter comes on quickly and robustly thanks to the assistance of the electric motor. Other than that, the pickup doesn’t overtly look, drive or sound like a conventional hybrid unless in reverse where a cute alert chime is emitted. While the alternative truck is capable of driving short stretches sans gasoline, there is no way to press a button to force an EV-exclusive mode. Instead, it happens autonomously under (read: very) light load applications. Give the accelerator any sort of real pressure and the gas powerplant kicks in fairly subtlely. The onboard 1.5-kilowatt-hour battery can’t be charged externally, however the process is automated via regenerative braking. The stored electricity isn’t only used for propulsion, but reserves 2.4-kilowatts (or up to 7.2 OCT/NOV 2021 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 23

A number of passengers commented on how upscale the inside felt. And indeed, the Lariat 4X4 I drove was generously equipped including a thumping B&O stereo, SiriusXM satellite radio, ambient lighting, leather bucket seats, electric sliding rear window and auto-dimming rear-view camera mirror. The exterior isn’t too shabby either, especially after adding extras like the FX4 off-road package (skid plates, heavy duty shocks), power tailgate and drop-down step, power deployable running boards and 275/60x20 all-terrain tires. Many of these, of course, yield better performance if you decide to take the truck off-roading. Lightweight aluminum still rules when it comes to the construction of the pickup, the body sitting on a fully boxed and ultra-strong steel frame. Ford says the current vehicle is the most aerodynamic one thus far boasting active grill shutters, a dynamic air dam, and redesigned cab and tailgate, all of which help reduce drag and contribute to the estimated range of over 1,000 kilometres on a full tank of fuel. As tested, the 2021 Ford F-150 Lariat 4X4 SuperCrew retails for $61,845, before optional equipment, fees and taxes, and is built in Dearborn, Michigan.

Very Cool Truck
2021 GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation Story and photos by Dan Heyman
T
he GMC Sierra 1500 Elevation you see here displays kind of a funny nomenclature. I mean, after all: with a name like “Elevation” one would probably think – as I did – that it stood pretty high up the pecking order when it comes to the Sierra 1500 line-up. In reality, however, it starts at $55,748 for the 2.7-litre turbo motor and $57,523 for the 5.3L V8 seen here, which actually has it sitting in the lower half of the spectrum, above both the base Sierra and SLE trims, but below SLT, the off-road spec AT4 and luxurious Denali model. Those last two, for their part, get their own sections on the GMC Canada webpage. Upon receiving the keys, however, this all came as a surprise to me. Even in midrange Elevation form, this particular Sierra is a very cool, quite upscale-looking truck with just a tinge of athleticism to give a bit of
a hint as to the 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque it packs underneath its muscular hood and behind its blacked-out grille. Said grille, meanwhile, is unique to the Elevation and comes flanked on either side by some cool-looking C-clamp-shaped headlights that, along with the DRLs, are of the LED variety. Yet another box ticked on the “class it up a little” list. Ditto the black 20-inch wheels that come as standard and are matched by black wing mirror caps, window surrounds and rear bumper Corner Step bed access cutouts. Those, by the way, are big enough to fit a steel toed work boot but aren’t, unfortunately, matched by anything else around the bed. Which means accessing gear towards the front of the bed from the side of the truck might be a bit of a challenge. There is, of course, one other important feature to discuss when it comes to bed access, but we’ll get there in just a minute. For now, it’s worth looking inside because while there are many nice bits here, it’s also where we start to see some of the Elevation’s sheen wear off, and some of its mid-range spec to come through. Like the exterior, “black” is the theme inside as most of the panels and surfaces are finished in black or something along the line thereof, like a dark charcoal or grey. I don’t mind that as a rule – and there is some brushed aluminum lookalike highlights around the centre stack and on the steering wheel – but I’m less willing to forgive the massive swathe of scratchable plastic that makes up the construction of the centre stack, as well as the area just ahead of the centre armrest. Which, it should be said, flips up to reveal a third seat up front, made possible by the console-mounted shift lever. My truck was also outfitted with cloth seats, and the fabric used is a little too close to rental car-spec for my liking. The seats themselves, however are quite comfortable and supportive and we all know how fabric seats are less affected by the outside conditions. Never so hot
OCT/NOV 2021 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 27
in the summer, never so cold in the winter. But, if you are too cold, the Elevation truck comes with heated front seats and you can choose to just heat the seatback, or both the seatback and bottom cushion. I do like the interior lighting, however. The gauge cluster isn’t super exciting-looking but the fonts used are nice, big and clear and you can easily absorb the information thereon through your peripheral vision. The 8-in. infotainment display, meanwhile, is nicely sized (although both Ford and Ram offer larger display choices for their pickups) and like the gauge cluster, get sharp graphics if not graphics that are all that sparkly. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, and CarPlay works wirelessly. The back seat of this Crew Cab model is spacious enough for the team, and while the floor isn’t completely flat, transmission tunnel intrusion isn’t too too bad, measuring less than an inch off the floor. So, if you prefer to flip the seats up and fit coolers and toolboxes back there, you should have no trouble doing so. Also helping to reduce pain points when it comes to loading the Sierra is the MultiPro tailgate. Basically, instead of just being a panel that drops down, the MultiPro tailgate can be set to do a number of different tasks depending on your needs. It can be made to act as a bed extender for the 5.8-foot bed (an 8.2-footer is also available), a tailgate step, a traditional tailgate or a number of other configurations. It takes a little getting used to which buttons and releases needed to be pressed for everything to work but once done, it’s a great feature to have and comes as standard on the Elevation. There is a problem, however, and that’s towing. You see, certain hitches will get in the way of the MultiPro’s operation, so you’ll want to keep that in mind when it comes time to configure your Sierra. In my tester’s configuration, meanwhile, I could tow up to 10,900 pounds and haul 2,433 lbs. Of course opting for rear-wheel-drive will increase those capacities, more so in terms of trailering. When unladen, this truck drives pretty much as it looks. That is to say you know you’ve got a nice, deep-chested naturally-aspirated V8 slung out ahead of you when you stomp the go pedal, as forward acceleration
28 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2021
is properly brisk and comes accompanied with a nice, throaty growl from the exhaust. However, when cruising, it quiets down and offers the pleasant drive you want when coasting on the highway or navigating rush hour traffic. The solid-axle rear suspension has been tweaked a little bit for trailering which is how you get those strong tow figures (that get stronger if you add the optional max tow package) and the ability to haul what you can but it hasn’t done all that much for the ride, which is on the firm side among its pickup brethren. The independent front suspension, however, makes it a little easier to digest. Opting for the Denali version, meanwhile, adds active dampers. Can’t get those at this level, though, which is too bad. Overall, though, if you can deal with the ride – and GMC’s popularity in Canada suggests that many truck buyers do – the Sierra Elevation is a very cool truck with a great engine and capability, and is one of the best-looking trucks on the market thanks to a good mix of the modern and traditional. This is a truck that does a good job of walking the line between cool and capable. It’s an intriguing proposition.
Winter Tire Test: Toyo Observe GS-i 6 Story and photos by Russell Purcell
L
ast winter, I had the opportunity to evaluate one of Toyo’s latest winter tire offerings. The Toyo Observe GS-i 6 is a stud-less performance tire that has been designed and engineered to provide light trucks and sport utility vehicles with surefooted traction and ride comfort. After spending a little more than four months with these fitted to my truck, I came away feeling that this tire is perfectly suited for the ever changing weather and road conditions that characterize a Canadian winter. The tires were fitted to a low-mile, first generation Honda Ridgeline by professional installers. The truck had recently been given a new suspension and brakes, and a four-wheel alignment was performed shortly after the new tires were fitted. I live in British Columbia, and our regulations require that you operate your vehicles with a proper winter tire (or chains) from October 1 to March 31, but many highways through mountain passes and or high snowfall areas extend this period to April 30. Due to complications related to the Covid-19 pandemic, the tires went on a little later than expected, but I did manage to run them for a period of time beginning in late December until the end of April. During this test period I managed to put 4,000 kilometres on the tires in a wide variety of road, weather and terrain conditions. The first thing I noticed about the Observe GS-i 6 is that they were really smooth running and quiet. Prior to these I was running a set of Cooper Discoverer A/TW tires that had served me well for a number of years, but that model has a much more aggressive all-terrain tread design which tends to create a substantial amount of road chatter at speed. In fact, the Toyo Observe GSi-6 may be the quietest dedicated winter tire that I have experienced, and given the number of press vehicles (of all shapes and sizes) that I have had the opportunity to test on winter rubber, this is a pretty impressive claim for the Toyos.
Confident Traction When It Counts
I like to begin a tire test with a long distance run of at least 500 kilometres, and my recent pattern has been to make the journey up the twisty Fraser Canyon to Spence’s Bridge followed by a 60-kilometre sprint along Highway 8 as it undulates beside the Nicola River through rolling hills and past scenic hoodoos. From Merritt I take Highway 5A to Princeton, before following the Crowsnest Highway back to Hope and then finally using Highway 7 to make my way home to the Fraser Valley. This trip can be a challenge for a tire any time of the year as the road surfaces are irregular and get beaten up by heavy truck traffic and plows. Add to this the fact that the sudden elevation and weather changes typical of mountain passes can wreak havoc on both traction and braking abilities. During the course of my day-long journey, the Toyo Observe GSi-6 tires performed flawlessly despite being asked to navigate over rough roads at highway speeds. They faced a deluge of rain between Agassiz and Hope but the GSi-6’s tread pattern proved very adept at evacuating standing water away from beneath the tire. This is accomplished through the use of a combination of wide grooves and sipes that provide an efficient means for excess water and slush to be cleared away so that the tire can retain grip with the road surface. I like to use this route to evaluate performance cars as it offers an incredible mix of twists, turns, dips and dives, and in the winter these conditions will quickly reveal the inherent strengths and weaknesses of a tire. The Fraser Canyon was slick and icy in areas where the road was sheltered from sunlight, and some areas beyond the tunnels had obviously been neglected by the road crews as a deep blanket of fresh snow was beginning to obscure the highway. The Toyos relentlessly pushed forward and I found that they climbed and cornered with confidence, and managed to maintain traction with relative ease. The journey from Spences Bridge to Merritt was harrowing at times due to tremendous crosswinds that seemed to surge through OCT/NOV 2021 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE 29
mountains or interior regions of the province, your winter driving experience will involve more rain than snow. However, late night temperatures will often dip below the freezing level so icy streets can become a substantial risk and potential hazard. During my evaluation, I experienced rain almost daily, and the Toyos seemed to thrive in the wet. Hydroplaning was virtually non-existent and braking distances seemed to be on par with those exhibited when operating on my all-season tires. I did notice that there was less noise coming from my wheel wells than there had been with my Cooper tires, which means that the Toyos seem to expel the water outwards better than the Coopers which spray the inner liners like a pressure washer.
the valley and over the river, but my nerve and visibility were tested more than the tires which continued to cut through the slush and snow. As I made my way to Princeton along Highway 5A, I started to see vehicles that had been abandoned alongside the road due to worsening conditions, mechanical failure or driver error. The sugar beet de-icing treatment that is used on many of this region’s highways was obviously in need of a refresh, so I did feel a little sliding under braking in a few less travelled sections of the road, but as this section is largely flat, it served as a reminder to maintain my focus rather than inducing much concern. Around Princeton the road had developed a thick crust of packed snow and ice with two distinct wheel channels cut through to the surface by large truck traffic. As the temperature dropped, these deep grooves be-
Gravel Performance The Toyo Observe GSi-6 has been designed to serve primarily as a highway tire and has been manufactured using a compound that should deliver decreased rolling resistance, extended mileage, and long tread life. However, light truck and SUV owners often find the need to venture off paved roads and explore - as I did on several occasions during my time with these tires. The Sasquatch Mountain Resort is a family oriented winter sports facility that is accessed by a tight, poorly maintained service road that is covered predominantly in gravel. A seemingly endless series of switchbacks and unstable shoulders make travel on this road a stress inducing activity on busy ski weekends. People tend to carry too much speed on this road, especially while descending, which can lead to aggressive skidding and sliding when the brakes are locked up on the loosely packed surface. For some reason this road eats Jeeps and one might begin to believe that the large evergreen trees are reaching out to pluck them from the road. The reality is that most of these rigs are running on all-terrain tires that are not well suited to winter conditions, and the treads pack full of gravel, snow and ice transforming them into toboggans. The Toyo Observe GSi-6 navigated the mountain road with confidence when partnered with four-wheel-drive, and the tread seemed to scamper over the gravel and carve through the snow like a mountain goat as long as I was consistent on the throttle and steady with the pace. I took my time on the descent, preserving my brakes for the slow turns and emergencies, and the tires seemed to be able to resist trapping stones in the tread. In short, the Observe GSi-6 conquered Sasquatch Mountain. After 4,000 kilometres and a season of use I can say that the Observe GSi-6 has proven to be an exceptional tire for the mild winter conditions we get here on the west coast. Its overall performance was consistent with regards to ride quality, traction, handling and braking no matter the conditions, and I would recommend it with confidence as a winter replacement tire for most light trucks and utility vehicles.
come slick and can easily trap the tires of a passenger vehicle guiding its direction of travel and robbing the driver of some control. I elected to ride with my wheels running on the dirty snow surface that resides above and parallel to these channels. This is because this narrow plateau retains a healthy dose of the gravel and sand that is deposited by the highway crews whenever winter creeps in with a sudden dumping of snow. The Toyo Observe GSi-6 tires handled this challenge without drama, as the high-grip silica compound seemed to bite into the soft surface allowing the truck to motor through without packing the tread with frozen debris and ice. I was left in full control of the vehicle and could steer, corner and brake as needed with just the occasional correction. Wet Weather Performance Vancouver is known for its mild climate, so unless you travel to the 30 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2021

RV-ING: 2021 NORTHERN LITE SPORTSMAN PLUS 8-11
Go Anywhere! Story and photos by Howard J Elmer
W
ho buys truck campers? I know truck campers are popular out West, primarily because they appeal to horse owners who already have trucks and tow horse trailers behind them. I also know that fishermen, hunters, ATVers, etc., all of whom often need to tow trailers, like them. And, because they are mounted on 4WD trucks, they can tackle the rough roads of the back country. Like I said – this describes why they are popular out West. But what about the rest of the country? The unit I’m doing a virtual test on today is built by a Canadian company, Northern Lite, of Kelowna, BC. This company has fed that western appetite for 30-odd years and continues to grow, extending its reach eastward. The Sportsman Plus 8-11 shown here, has new features for the 2021 model year such as Dual 185-Watt Solar Panels; a 9-inch Wider Dinette; Wireless Backup Camera; Removable Third Step; Exterior 110V Plug and Premium Leatherette U-Shaped Seating. These items are the continued improvement of a long serving product. In fact, I did a review of this model in 2010 and it continues to be popular. With a dry weight of around 2,400 lb, this unit requires a 2500 series and higher truck to carry it. However, it will fit a 6.5-foot bed – which for crew cabs is the most common size. Northern Lite builds its truck campers in much the same way boat hulls are manufactured. Using fibreglass moulds, they lay up a mixture of chopped fibreglass strands and plastic resin to form a top and bottom shell. Finished with a covering of Gelcoat, the two sections are then screwed together, and then the window and vent opening are cut out and the interior fixtures 38 Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 2021
added. This makes the unit impervious to water from above and below. As with all small units, the description “boatlike design” is fitting because inside, it’s all about efficient use of space. All truck campers use the same basic design - a centre aisle leads to the main bed that is housed in the overhanging portion of the RV. This aisle also separates the dining area from the galley and the washroom from the storage. In the Sportsman, the bath is on the left at the rear of the unit and it includes a toilet, sink, exhaust vent and a sliding door – all built into a fully “wet” designed shower (a dry bath is also available). Across the aisle mirrored doors front a large hanging clothes closet next to the full-size refrigerator/freezer. Ahead of these are the counter/sink/stove on the right and the four-place raised dinette on the left. Cupboards, drawers and other closet doors are all solid hardwood and nicely finished. The counter top looks ample in size. Above it, the standard microwave is hidden in the cupboard, rather than taking up that valuable counter space. These units are typically built for two people; however, the dinette does drop down for the occasional overnight guest – who you better know well considering the close quarters. But for the main occupants, the bed in the overhang is huge, nicely lit and ventilated with windows on either side. Also (over the bed) is a large skylight that also doubles as an emergency exit. The mattress area is 80 by 60-inches and there is a further foot of space on either side that houses twin doors that open to stor-
age. There is also a closet on the left and the right. On the right there is also a set-up for a flat screen TV. Headroom in this space is listed at a decent 30 inches. Windows in the unit are of the acrylic thermal pane type. They have a pull-up screen and a pull-down shade, both of which are spring-loaded. Powered vents in the bath and in the main hallway will move a large quantity of air. If you are wondering - getting the camper on and off the truck is as simple as using a TV remote. In fact, with the standard

I’ve done it in the past and found I could lift, back under and drop the unit onto my truck in under five minutes. A few years ago, I was doing another truck camper test at an RV dealer and fell into conversation with a couple who were looking at them. Curious, I asked them why they were interested in that unit – and their answers surprised me. I repeat that conversation here because I still feel they laid out the best real-world case for buying a truck camper that I’ve heard. In a nutshell, they told me they had a 30-something foot fifthwheel which they found to be almost an inconvenience on some road trips they took. Example, Labrador and Newfoundland. Why? Two reasons – precious few areas to pull a rig of that size off the road for a quick stop or short overnight – and second – the roads were lousy. Still, I said, how often do you go somewhere like that? To this, the answer was even more revealing. With just the two of them travelling now, they had first considered downsizing to a Class B, but then they realized that a Class B is always a Class B. But with the truck camper (at a third of the price of a Class B) they could use it when needed and then unload it at home. The pickup was now once more just transportation. And, they already owned the truck. As for the fifth-wheel - they’d keep it for longer trips with longer stays. Suddenly, the penny dropped. Ease of access; price-point; utility-minded. All things that appeal to me as well. Pays to talk to strangers, I say.

So, lets run over the why’s again. Then, if these reasons strike a chord with you, go have a look at the newest features on the Northern Lite Sportsman 8-11. 1. Rough country access. Your truck has 4WD and rugged tires; it also has good ground clearance and a suspension that is built for off-road travel. If your truck can get in there, then so can your truck camper. 2. The right truck camper does not impede your ability to tow a trailer. This is one of the reasons that these campers are popular with the horsey crowd, as they tow their animals to places and events where having accommodation on site is a definite benefit. 3. With the right lift kit, the truck camper takes just a few minutes more to unload than the time required to uncouple a trailer. 4. Like a trailer or fifth-wheel, when you trade in your truck you don’t have to change up your camper – it continues to serve, regardless of what new pickup you buy.
