All-New, Redesigned 202 Chevrolet Colorado Unveiled

Chevrolet has recently unveiled the all-new 2023 Colorado mid-size pickup that Chevy says focused on three key areas during the re design; elevated design, enhanced performance and useful technology. The 2023 lineup will feature three distinctive chassis stances which provide a more diverse range of choices across the model range. The exterior features new styling cues and proportions and an all-new inte rior with a standard 11.3-in. diagonal colour infotainment touchscreen accompanied by a standard 8-in. diagonal fully digital colour instrument display, both of which are heavily customizable. The new Colorado bor rows the 2.7L turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine from the full-size Silverado which comes standard for all five initial models and offers three distinct output variants including the base 2.7L turbo (237 hp, 259 lb-ft), 2.7L Turbo Plus (310 hp, 390 lb-ft.) and 2.7L Turbo High-Output (310 hp, 430 lb-ft.). This new powertrain provides more horsepower and torque than the previous three engines offered and will be paired to a second-generation eight-speed automatic transmission that now offers smoother shifting and quicker downshifts while also excelling in low-speed mobility, particularly in off-road scenarios. The three chassis options mentioned will be the Standard which is featured in WT, LT and Z71 trims, a 2-in. Factory-Lifted, Wide Stance chassis for the Trail Boss and a High-Performance, 3-in. Factory Installed Lift & Wide Stance for the ZR2 off-road model. All chassis options give the Colorado a 3.1-in. longer wheelbase than the current Crew Cab/short box model. The truck will, of course, be fitted with all the latest and greatest safety and technology features and will offer up to five selectable drive modes, depending on the model. The 2023 Chevrolet Colorado will see produc tion begin in the first half of 2023 and we will be sure to provide dates and pricing information as it’s made available.

Chevrolet Introducing Silverado ZR2 Bison Model

Chevy offered a ZR2 Bison package on the mid-size Colorado pickup back in 2019 and it quickly became the most popular special edition package offered with the Colorado ZR2. When compared to the ZR2 model, the Bison sees multiple improved off-road stats including front approach angle, departure angle and ground clearance, and features AEV bumpers and underbody protection in order to handle extreme off-road environments. Other standard features of the Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison include steel rocker panel protection and exclusive gloss black 18-in. AEV wheels paired with 33-in. Goodyear Wrangler Territory

M/T tires. A standard 6.2L V8 engine with 10-speed automatic transmission and Multimatic 40mm DSSV spool-valve dampers are featured, as are uniquely tuned springs that increase maximum front and rear suspension travel. Other updates for the 2023 model year include a refined, second-generation 3.0L inline-six turbo-diesel Duramax that sees power increased to 305 horsepower and 495 lb-ft of torque. Jeep Debuts Heritage-Inspired 202 Wrangler Willys 4xe

At the recent 2022 Detroit Auto Show, Jeep officially introduced the new, heritage-inspired 2023 Wrangler Willys 4xe which marks the first expansion of the Wrangler 4xe lineup. The 2.0L turbocharged I-4 4xe powertrain produces 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft. and pairs with a 17kWh battery and engine-mounted motor generator unit to provide up to 34 km of all-electric range, all while still featuring a 2.72:1 Selec-Trac 4WD system, heavy-duty Dana 44 axles and mud-terrain tires. The engine is paired to a Torque Flite eight-speed automatic transmission and aforementioned 400-volt battery pack that work together to help maximize the efficiency of the hybrid propulsion com ponents. In 2023 we will see more off-road capable vehicles being built than at any time in vehicle history. Consider that over the past decade, every truck/SUV manufacturer has been pumping out more and more of these aggressive off-road designs. Professional Grade

The GMC Sierra is undeniably the little sister to the Chevrolet Sil verado – particularly in the States where it outsells its GMC sibling by at least three to one. Despite smaller sales numbers, though, it is still a major player and General Motors wants to close that sales gap without the taint of what was once known as “rebadging”. Separa tion and a unique identity are the strategy for these two truck brands owned by GM.

To that end, GMC started pushing its “professional grade” message almost 15 years ago now. This was their strategy to continue the

GMC’s Newest Version of Denali

separation from the Silverado – style-wise. Today, Sierra has a new grille, upright and dominant with a proportional chrome pattern. The lights are large and C-shaped (pulled back now slightly) anchoring the taller hood to the powerful shoulders on the truck’s front end. This is in sharp contrast to new Silverado – and that’s the point. After years of working at this Sierra identity – well, it’s working.

But within this tale of two sisters, there is also another story I call the rise of the Denali. This trim package was introduced back in 2000 and while it is still just that, it has taken on a unique separate identity all its own. Ask any Sierra Denali owner and they will tell you they simply refer to the truck as a “Denali”. This trim level which accounts for 26 percent of total sales has almost become a name brand all on its own. This is what you call an organic marketing coup. It happens only occasionally in the automotive world; GM knows it and is now working to exploit it.

Knowing how Denali owners feel about their trucks, they knew that efforts by other manu facturers to crack the luxury pickup segment were getting serious. So, not waiting for the generational update, GMC has unveiled the Sierra Denali Ultimate. This new version of Denali pushes Ultimate back into the lead in this high-priced, much fought-over segment. Have a look at what the Ultimate has to offer.

Still Here

2022 Ford Ranger Lariat

The redesigned Ford Ranger is already available in other markets, and coming to Canada next year, but this is no reason to disregard the model we currently have on our shores that reinvigorated the mid-size segment when it first launched back in 2018. Let’s revisit the vehicle responsible for getting people here excited again about smaller pickups.

Though the slim LED headlamps and tapered nose — designed to reduce wind noise and drag — seem a bit dated considering the rest of the blue oval util ity lineup now feature squared-off front fascias, the rest of the body still looks muscular and capable. Speaking of the latter, the truck is definitely ready to work, featuring high-strength steel front and rear bumpers mounted to a steel frame.

Full-size doors all-around give the Lariat Super Crew variant we tested a balanced appearance and room for five passengers, and the matte black 18-inch wheels shod in Hankook Dynapro all-terrain tires complements the subtle contrast pinstriping and other black accents like the grille and tow hooks nicely (part of the $1,700 Splash Package) — especially if the paint is the optional egg-yolk-esque Cyber Orange colour (+ $550).

The tailgate has “Ranger” stamped in large letters and our loaner had the rugged ToughBed spray-in bedliner (+ $600) installed.

road Package (+ $1,400) is offered, enhancing the vehicle’s ability to tackle the trails. Upgrades include tuned shocks, electronic-locking rear differential, multiple skidplates and a Terrain Management System allow ing drivers to select from four modes: Grass, Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts and Sand, which optimize engine respon siveness, transmission gearing and other settings for various surface conditions. Also, the display shows information on pitch and roll as well as steering angle.

In addition, Trail Control technology is introduced that the brand says is similar to “cruise control for the highway but designed for low-speed, rugged terrain.” A perfect way to describe it; activating the function means a focus can be placed on steering while the computer powers and brakes each individual wheel as needed via the Dana AdvanTEK independent front and solid rear axles. The desired speed is set us ing the buttons on the left side of the steering wheel.

The interior is pretty standard fare, though there are some nice extras like seven-colour ambient lighting, Ebony leather upholstery, orange stitching, leather steering wheel and shifter and a sliding rear window. The rear cab is spacious and easily

Big Rig

2022 Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada continues to soldier on as one of the elder statesmen of the full-size body-on-frame SUV world; it’s got a proper truck chassis shared with the desert-beating Nissan Patrol, a naturally-aspirated 5.6-litre V8 from the Infiniti QX80 luxury truck and styling that leaves very little to the imagination; all big, chrome grille surround, big chrome wheels, big chrome wing mirror covers that are so reflective they could be used as mirrors themselves, big chrome “Armada” script across the back, and huge headlamp lenses that wouldn’t look out of place on a Class 8 big rig.

It’s a vehicle that does make a statement on the styling front when it comes to presence – if you’re in the vicinity of this truck, you know it. It’s a big, heavy-metal SUV that just by looking at it, you’ll know it can take most everything you throw at it.

Inside, that image changes a little – it’s softer, and especially in Platinum spec seen here, it gets goods like leather seating with white contrast stitching, wood inserts, heated and cooled front seats, digital rear-view mirror (more on this in a minute), big 12.3-inch infotain ment display with wireless charging, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and surround-view parking monitor whose top-down view is oh-so helpful in a big vehicle like this. You would never guess from looking inside the Armada that you’re in a truck that shares many of its bits with a military-grade vehicle like the Patrol. It’s nice, and on the surface you wonder how its QX80 twin could move the goalposts any further than this.

Looking a little closer does reveal that the Armada is not the most luxurious version of the platform; the leather is not of the same grade and appears pulled a little too tight in some areas; the lighting isn’t quite as robust; and it’s just a little louder, and doesn’t ride quite as smoothly.

Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 20220

With that tall roof, it should come as no surprise that headroom both front and rear is ample; even with the sunroof on my tester, I had no problem sporting a baseball cap as I sat. Heck, I probably could have been wearing a 10-gallon hat in there and had no problem. Same goes for the back seat. Even though with up to 233 millimetres of ground clearance, the Armada has a tall floor, they’ve made it so it doesn’t affect headroom as much as you might think.

I’m less enamoured with the rear seat legroom, which is snug, though the way the second-row captain’s chairs on my tester (other models get a bench for a total of eight seats) fold and tumble forward provide easy access to the third row. Which, by the way, isn’t too bad for adults and comes equipped with four cu pholders.

The third row does compro mise the amount of cargo space you have in the rear thanks to that same tall floor. As a result, a family camping trip had us loading the rear right to the very top (as well as the shallow underfloor storage bin), which is where the digital rear-view comes in.

Since its camera sits outside of the Armada, it doesn’t matter how tall you load your wares behind you (or how tall your second- and thirdrow passengers may be), because your view out the rear is never compromised. It also allows for a wider view out overall as you never have to deal with the rear window frame and no matter who’s driving – your wife, your son, your dog – the mirror never has to be adjusted because the view out is always the same.

I do admit, however, that in low-light situations, I prefer a traditional mirror – you can swap between the two by flipping what has historically been the dimmer switch – because I don’t like grainy images and I don’t like approaching vehicles to appear simply as two orbs of light.

The other interior aspects are good; the 13-speaker Bose sound system is clear (though not my favourite OEM when it comes to in-car audio), and while the native infotainment interface is eclipsed in functionality and appearance by a lot of the competition, the touchscreen is respon sive enough so Apple CarPlay is fully functional and it’s what I stuck with for the duration of my time.

Power is rated at 400 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, and it gets sent to the wheels via a seven-speed auto. It’s not the most advanced powertrain – there’s no turbocharging or supercharging, no 48V mild hybrid additions – but it is a robust one that does as good a job as it can to try and disguise the Armada’s hefty 2,742-kilogram curb weight in Platinum spec. It’s got a throaty report as you acceler ate, though, sounding as a proper V8 should. It also helps the Armada achieve a 8,500-pound tow rating.

Trucks Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 20222

Now, the 16.9 L/100 km of fuel usage in the com bined cycle I saw during my test isn’t spectacular by any means, but the Armada gets a big 98-litre tank and runs on regular fuel, which is a nice benefit of a naturally-aspirated engine.

When it comes to ride, the Armada suffers the usual pitfalls of having a body crowning a chassis; stiff response over repeated bumps and some wafting ‘round corners (its height doesn’t help in this regard) but the dampers have been tuned to provide a perfectly comfortable ride in most situations.

While the V8 grunt is appreciated when on the road, going off-road is a bit of a lo-tech experience. There are no locking diffs and no limited-slip diffs, for example, but there is a hill-descent control system as well as vehicle dynamic control that helps control wheel slip under braking.

Those are all just numbers on a page, though. In all truthfulness, I really do like the feel as soon as you set off in the Armada. It feels incredibly robust and ready to tackle anything and is proof positive that you don’t necessarily need the technologies mentioned earlier for a fully-functional truck. In fact, sometimes, they may even serve as a bit of a distraction. I’ve driven one of the Armada’s top competition in the form of the Chevrolet Tahoe, and it has a cylinder deactivation system. The gauge cluster lets you know how many cylinders you’re using and I found myself constantly checking in on that as I drove, to make sure I knew what was going on et cetera. What’s the point, really? They obviously want you to check it because why else would they have included the feature, but just get me the throttle and transmission response I need and be done with it. With the Armada, you select drive and you’re off, no muss, no fuss and you it’s going to get the job done.

Add 4H and 4L settings as well as a snow mode and while it may not have the off-road variety as, say, an Expedition, but darned if it doesn’t feel plenty capable off the beaten track in spite of all that. Maybe it was my knowledge about the Patrol connection, but I felt fully in control and confident in the light off-roading I did (and, if we’re honest, that most Armada owners will do), which does the trick.

In the end, the Armada stands as a living testament to what can be achieved – even in this day and age – with a robust chassis and good ol’ school V8 power and offering little more than a cursory glance into the world of autonomous driving, off-road cruise control and so on. It’s an honest, practical vehicle and like a naturally-aspirated muscle car or a drop-top sports car than can be had for less than a king’s ransom, it’s becoming less and less common in the world today. There’s something to be said for the uniqueness that kind of rarity provides.

Need a little more room?

W e recently looked at a selection of Class B motorhomes. These popular vehicles have really taken off as a result of the new chassis available to the manufacturers. Their easy drivability and compact design are their key attributes. However, if you find they are just a little too small, you can have a look at the B-Plus category of motorhomes. As the name implies, these units offer just that much more room and a greater variety of design features. Bigger than a B, but not with the lumbering

Look at the B-Plus motorhomes

proportions of a Class C, ease of driving remains the key to their popularity. Once again, I stress, such a great selection of units is now available because of these new chassis from Ford, Mercedes and Ram.

A quick word about classifications – I noticed as I was doing research that some manufacturers are simply calling everything past a Class B – a Class C. Some just don’t embrace the term B-Plus. For me, being old school, a Class C has a bed hung over the cab area of the vehicle. If it does not have that bed I consider it a B-Plus. So, once you cruise the websites, you’ll see what I mean.

The other innovation that is taking hold today is the rough terrain, off-grid designs. I’ve pulled just two examples – one from each end of the design spectrum. On-road and campground comfort to off-road, boondocking rig. Let’s have a look at this bookended couple.

202 Leisure Travel Vans Wonder

The Wonder offers three floorplans, on the same Ford Transit chassis. Powered by a twinturbocharged 3.5L EcoBoost V6 gas engine, Ford’s intelligent all-wheel-drive is optional.

Features including advanced driver-assist technology, auto start-stop, and electric powerassisted steering make driving the Wonder easy. The new Ford Transit also includes safety features, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Post-Colli sion Braking, Lane-Keeping System, Side Wind Stabilization, and much more.

Inside the compact Wonder, a dual-zone floorplan features a spacious rear living area

chairs with built-in footrests and an integrated entertainment unit. Three large, expansive windows offer natural light and immer sive views of the outdoors. With every inch carefully considered,

Wonder Rear Lounge creates true dual-zone living areas. Up front, a large galley kitchen makes cooking a joy thanks to smart features like a large Corian countertop, flip-down extension and premium appliances, including the Dometic 10 Series fridge.

At night, an available 58x74-inch Murphy bed transforms the area into a luxurious master suite. Convenient technology abounds in the Wonder. Forgot to turn off a light, or want to turn up the heat for night? Use a mobile app to control the Wonder’s climate controls, lighting, and more right from your phone.

202 Winnebago EKKO

This B-Plus combines the extra space I was talking about with a very off-grid attitude, starting with an AWD Ford Transit chassis to get you off the beaten path.

It’s powered by the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 gas engine, and power is sent through a 10-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. It makes 310 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque, while the 31-gallon fuel tank greatly extends the EKKO’s range. Standard features include Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane-Keeping System, Pre-Collision Braking, Driver Alert, Blind Spot Monitoring system, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, high-intensity discharge headlamps, and a trailer hitch with 5,000-lb. drawbar and 7-pin connector.

Combining the efficiency of a camper van and the capacity of a Class C coach, the EKKO takes the phrase ‘big things in small packages’ to a whole new level, says Winnebago. From the mas sive heated pass-through gear garage – large enough to store bicycles, inflatable kayaks and other outdoor gear – to the large living, sleeping, and cooking space, the EKKO is an adventure vehicle.

As for those off-grid features I was talking about, consider that the EKKO comes with three solar panels that pump out 455-

The 50-gallon freshwater tank plus proportionate waste tanks make extended stays possible. The full galley is equipped with energy-efficient appliances and the Flex Bed system creates a variety of sleeping spaces. An innovative dry/wet bath uses a pivoting wall to save space. Guests on board? No problem, thanks to dinette seating with three-point seat belts and child seat tether anchors, not to mention the added sleeping capacity. With the optional pop-top you also get penthouse views.

Golden Anniversary

But it has, and this year, Dominion Sure Seal celebrates its 50th An niversary in the industry. Ronald passed away in 2011 at the age of 71, and the company continues to be a family affair, in the capable hands of his sons, CEO Greg Morton, and Der ek Morton, now VP of Marketing. In those 50 years, Dominion Sure Seal has become a leading manufacturer of sealants, protective coatings and adhesives for the automotive paint, body and equipment industry.

The period of rapid growth for the company began in the mid-1980s, when the amount of plastic in new cars increased dramatically. Until this point, the body shops primarily used steel-raising body filler. Greg

Morton takes up the story. “My dad’s chemist saw an op portunity to come up with a product similar to body filler but for plastic, called Plastic Repair. My dad was one of the first to come out with this epoxy plastic repair process. We started penetrating the market and doing a lot of OEM products as well as private label, and Dominion Sure Seal really took off.”

“In the 1980s, our brand really grew,” says Morton. “In 1988, my dad joined up with Meguiar’s USA and we became Meguiar’s Canada and sold through warehouse distributors, who then sold to jobbers. My dad saw the opportunity to stop selling direct to body shops and instead sell to WDs and jobbers.” That change of approach accelerated the company’s growth even more.

“The other product that really took off was the pick-up bed liner. Dad launched Gator Guard around 1996, way before anyone else had anything like that. He came out with an epoxy-based bed liner that you could roll-on, spray-on, or brush-on, and it absolutely took off in the United States. We were one of the first companies to manufacture a liquid bedliner, and that product absolutely exploded our business in the 1990s. Today, we don’t do much of it at all, but that’s how we grew initially in the U.S.”

So today, just what does Dominion Sure Seal sell the most of? “Now, we do a ton of aerosols,” says Morton. “Our products include under-coatings, paints, plastic repair, anticorrosion materials, liquid bed liners, adhesives, tapes and specialty chemicals. We source Canadian-made materials as much as possible. All our aerosols are made in Canada, and that represents about 60-percent of our business.”

As one might expect, with all the justified concern for air quality and the environment, aerosols come under scru tiny from regulators. “The biggest threat to our business is environmental concerns, because we sell chemicals,” admits Morton. “Chemicals and products containing VOCs are constantly being discontinued, and hazardous materials regulations are becoming a lot stricter. We’re constantly having to reformulate our products to meet environmental regulations — that’s our biggest challenge. However, we’re a small enough company that we can adjust pretty quickly. You adjust, and you do the right thing, but being more en vironmentally friendly definitely increases costs. It’s a fulltime job keeping on top of all the environmental regulations since it goes state by state, province by province. ”

There is another big challenge that Dominion Sure Seal faces. “The industry has gone from fixing things to replac ing them, which is a challenge for us. We used to sell a ton of product to bumper recyclers, for example, and now

we don’t. Now that cars have so many sensors, cameras, and other extras, it’s often cheaper just to replace things than fix them, so shops are fixing less and replac ing more, and not getting as much work. This is also an environmental concern—repairable parts just get thrown out.”

Despite the regulatory challenges and the shifting trends in the indus try, Dominion Sure Seal continues to grow, as Greg Morton explains. “We started with five people, and now we have 30. We have two 40,000 square-foot facilities, ten sales representatives in Canada, and another 30 in the U.S. Business has doubled within the last 5-6 years, and now we’re in a lot of major retailers in both the U.S. and Canada.”

Many of those big retailers, like Canadian Tire and NAPA Auto Parts, have been with Dominion Sure Seal for de cades. “We have very good customer retention because we’re big enough to fulfill our customers’ needs, but small enough to be very reactive,” says Morton. “We’re one of the few independent, family-owned businesses left of our size. That’s a huge advantage for us because some of the jobber stores don’t want to do business with the bigger guys, so it has opened up a lot of opportunities for us.”

The company leaves no doubt as to where it is headquar tered, as “Dominion” stands for the Dominion of Canada, and the maple leaf is on all its products. “We’re a very proudly Canadian company and family-owned business, and we’re excited we made it to 50 years,” says Greg Morton. “My Dad started the company in 1972 and here we are 50 years later, more successful than ever. We’ve grown a lot and things are very good.”

Walks the Walk

I’ll come right out and say it; when I first saw the Ford Bronco Raptor, it was not what I expected.

Sure, it had the massively flared fenders (it gains almost 10 inches in width, after all), huge 37-inch tires with 17-inch beadlock-prepped wheels, and more we’ll discuss in a minute. At the outset, though, the overriding aspect I couldn’t get past was the fact that it was only available as a four-door hard top Bronco, as opposed to the two-door model.

After all; a superperformance off-roader like this would be the perfect spec for a two-door, wouldn’t it? Two doors and performance; the two go hand-in-hand, don’t they? Not to mention that the Baja bashing Broncos of old – think Parnelli Jones’ Big Oly – were always two-door models, as is the current Bronco DR (“Desert Racer”) truck. Shouldn’t this be the same? I mean, it has a “Baja” mode, after all…

Well, according to Ford, the four-door was the way to go. Its longer wheelbase provides more stability in the fast off-roading environments

in which this truck is to excel, and the four-door Bronco is the more popular choice among consumers. Not to mention that the Bronco Raptor’s main competition in the form of the Jeep Wrangler 392 is also available only as a four-door, and though there used to be both a short cab and Super Crew version of the F-150 Raptor, the latter always outsold the former. I’m sure if they had their way, the Bronco Raptor team would also have developed a two-door version, but business is business and the four-door is good business.

And holy-moly, even in four-door form, is the Bronco Raptor ever goodlooking. I wouldn’t call it “handsome”, necessarily, but even though the standard Bronco is already a pretty aggressive-looking thing, they’ve found a way to turn up the quick here. The fender flares are absolutely massive, to the point where the Raptor – especially when finished in one of the many bright colours on offer, including Raptor-exclusive Code Orange – really does look like its fenders kind of adorn its body like a hoop dress from the Victorian Age. Since the fenders are dark grey/ black, the effect isn’t quite so powerful on darker-coloured trucks.

The BF Goodrich K02 tires, though, are impressive no matter what co lour truck it is. Measuring 37-inches tall and 315 mm wide and wrapped

2022 Ford Bronco Raptor

around some properly aggressive wheels, it’s some rolling stock that leaves little to the imagination. This thing is massive and ultra in every way and I suspect will drive many an off-roader mad with desire.

Also unique to the Raptor is a special taillight assembly as well as a heavy-duty hitch. The hitch can only fit a Raptor because it doesn’t have the transverse-mounted muffler slung beneath the rear bumper like other Broncos. The result is that not only is the Raptor and its 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 with 418 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque the most powerful Bronco, but at 4,000 pounds, it can also tow the most.

Of course, you’re not going to craft an exterior like that without gussy ing up the interior as well. Here, that comes in the form of splashes of orange throughout the cabin; the seat stitching, G.O.A.T. (“Goes Over Any Type of Terrain”) drive mode selector, hand holds, vents and even the centring band atop the specialized Ford Performance steering wheel are all finished in the tint, which matches the specialized Fox shocks. It’s mostly good, though the orange “Bronco” script ahead of the front pas senger is a little much. The seats are also special high-bolstered items from the Ford Performance catalogue, and they are comfortable and supportive. Finally, there are magnesium shift paddles and the gauge cluster is a specialized all-digital item crafted specifically for the Raptor that can be modified to display little more than a centralized tachometer – very race truck, that.

It all points to the Raptor being something special, and you’ll know it the moment you fire it up. It starts out with the menacing exhaust growl that can be modified to four levels, including a Baja level that is the noisiest of the bunch. Not easy to get that kind of report from a turbocharged motor, but there you have it.

As soon as you clamber into the truck – it takes a little bit of work, as supplemental side steps would eat in to the 13-inches of ride height you get – grab that wheel and look out over that broad, squared hood (that remains framed by a “gunsight” on each corner), it takes a whole lot of self-discipline to not press that start/stop button (shaped to reflect the signature Bronco headlight assemblies) and stomp on it.

So, why bother with self-discipline? Just hit it! So I did.

OFF-rOAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 20224

The beginning of our drive had us on the highway just outside of St. John on the way to a trail network typically frequented by ATVs and snow mobiles. If my experience with the F-150 Raptor was any indication, I expected the Bronco Raptor to be less than refined in this environment. The Bronco, however, has a little more weight over the rear axle and it didn’t seem as flighty at the rear as did the F-150. You’ll still get quite a bit of road noise from those knobby tires and since the roof is made up of three separate removable panels, you do get wind noise, but the Bronco Raptor seemed much more at home here, just a little more relaxed.

Of course, when you step on it – especially in Sport mode – that changes a little as the full fury of that twin-turbo V6 makes itself known as you’re catapulted down the road at speeds that a heavy off-roading SUV like this really shouldn’t be capable of. Obviously, passing trucks at freeway speeds or getting up to speed as you enter said freeway is no problem. You’ll never feel put out when it comes to accelerative force, that’s for sure.

All good stuff, but there is very little that can prepare you for the all-out, Cheshire Cat-sized grin inducing assault on the senses that you get once the road gets rougher, the trees alongside it get closer and the puddles get deeper and more frequent.

Before we got to the faster stuff, though, we had to make our way there and that meant some rockcrawling. Like the Badlands ver sion, the Raptor gets a sway bar disconnect that once activated, you can feel the whole vehicle relax as the wheels are free to flow with the ground below, keeping the body in control and the occupants a little more comfortable. In this setting, the Raptor clambers over the loosest, steepest climbs – so steep that on the way up, we saw nothing but blue sky – with nary a complaint.

The view skyward isn’t a problem, because the Raptor gets a 12-inch infotainment display as standard, and in rock crawl mode, it becomes a forward-and-down facing camera so you can see what’s going on below you. I don’t love that you can’t use the display for anything else when in this mode, however. That means if you were to try an adjust the temperature, for example, you can’t see to what level you’ve set it to. It will change, but you don’t know by how much.

Is it ever capable here, though, made more so by the Trail Turn Assist feature. When active, it applies the brakes to the inside rear wheel to essentially pivot you ‘round, as if you had cat tracks. It’s quite something to see your nose moving sideways as if on casters to get you through tight situations. Wild stuff.

Wild, but nothing compared to what you can do once you get off the rocks and on to the fast gravel. Activate Baja mode, keep the sway bar disconnect and you can traverse this kind of stuff with your hair nicely scalded. Listen as the gravel clatters against the underbody skid plates; feel as the tires drop gamely into a divot and up over chains of stones; watch as the scenery continues to blur juuuust a little more as you gain a little more confidence with your right foot. It got to the point where your thinking changes from “geez, hope I won’t bottom out through this puddle” to “how high can we make those splashes? Let’s coat that windshield!”

It’s a halo vehicle, though, this Bronco Raptor. It’s a specialized version of an (only slightly) more pedestrian vehicle and you will pay for it – just five bucks below $100,000, if you’re asking, and $103,390 if you add the luxury package that includes adaptive cruise control, 10-speaker B&O audio, navigation and heated steering wheel. It’s considered a trim of the Bronco, but with that pricing and all those adjustments it really does seem like a model unto itself.

It takes some commitment – to learn the various 4WD controls, how to handle all that width, how to, you know, afford it and all – but oh boy. This is a special truck, and it’s one that walks the walk, and it’s of a type we won’t be seeing much more of (or many of, as it will be a limited production run) going forward – so now’s your chance.

Jeep 4xe Day 2022

A t the inaugural Jeep 4xe Day last month, which was conceived to lay out the company’s green road map for the near future, it was revealed four rugged all-electric vehicles are destined for North America and Europe by 2025. Below, we take a look at what some of those are going to be.

“The Jeep brand’s legendary 4x4 capability continues to evolve with the use of electrification and technology, providing our community with more of what they love,” says CEO Christian Meunier during the virtual presentation.

“More capability by increasing on-demand torque from the 4xe electrified powertrain for 4x4 traction, or fun by delivering even more driving excitement for your next off-road adventure. And

more freedom: the ability to go anywhere, and do anything, with open air freedom in near silence with quiet performance of the 4xe system. This is why we say that 4xe is the new 4x4.”

2024 Jeep Recon

The first EV to arrive in Canada is the Wrangler-esque Recon, designed from the ground up. Like its gasoline-powered cousin, this mid-size model features the iconic seven-slot grille, short overhangs, a tailgate-mounted spare, Selec-Terrain traction management system, e-locker axle technology, plenty of underbody protection, tow hooks and BFGoodrich T/A off-road tires. The top can be dropped and raised at the touch of a button, and all doors are fully removable. Customers can begin placing orders early next year.

the internal combustion Wagoneer (and pre mium Grand Wagoneer variant) has been lauded for combining utility and luxury in a full-size package. The forthcoming zero emissions version — wearing a unique dif ferentiating LED-lit grille — promises more of the same while packing a 600-horse power motor able to take the SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in well under four seconds. Approximately 650 kilometres of range is expected on a single charge. Orders will commence in 2023.

202 Jeep Avenger

Europe is trailblazing the way for green vehicles, where in many countries Jeep is already moving to a gas-free portfolio over the next few months. Among the offerings is the Avenger that is currently not planned to arrive on local shores. Though compact in size, the crossover still provides generous ground clearance, breakover and approach angles allowing the tackling of unfriendly terrain. Not much else is currently known other than there’s an estimated maximum travel distance of 400 kilometres with a full battery. Look for a full reveal on Oct. 17.

These plans build upon the existing success of the brand’s plug-in hybrid models such as the Wrangler 4xe and recently introduced Grand Cherokee 4xe. Jeep is also aiming for pure electric products to represent 50 per cent of sale in the U.S., and 100 per cent in Europe, by 2030. Stay tuned as ad ditional EVs are announced in the coming months.

The Perfect Balance

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Though sleek and Jeep kind of rhyme, one does not normally associate the latter’s utility-focused product with the former description. Yet, the fifth generation model has emerged the most aerodynamic looking its ever been, while adding more space, luxury and tech. Read on.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee is our global flagship and will be leading the Jeep brand into a new era of premium refinement, innovative technology, advanced 4x4 capability and electrifica tion,” says CEO Christian Meunier in a media release. “With a perfect balance of on-road dynamics, 4x4 capability and 4xe performance, the all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most technologically advanced, luxurious and 4x4-capable Grand Cherokee ever.”

Designers have implemented a number of styling cues to give the vehicle a sportier appearance. For example, tapering the 10millimetre lower roof (offered in a contrast black on our Summit Reserve press tester) towards the rear, lowering the beltline and expanding the glass that also has the benefit of increasing driver visibility and light into the cabin. The signature seven-slot grille is slightly wider and curvier, particular at the ends, and hides a long-range radar behind the mesh. And the flattened, long hood accentuates the crossover’s athletic body panels.

The manufacturer rarely focuses on form and no function, and it’s the same here. Accessories like the spats found ahead of the front wheels (now available in sizes up to 21 inches) and vertical tailgate pillar spoilers smooth airflow helping performance and fuel economy. The 36-millimetre wider track compared to the outgoing example improves handling and manoeuvrability as well.

Is it really necessary? Probably not. Is it cool? Definitely yes. Even the driver benefits from a matching 10.1-inch digital instrument cluster.

Despite all the modern exterior touches, the interior evokes a sense of nostalgia thanks to the heritage wood panelling across the dash and below the windows. At the same time, there’s a premium feel to the space not quite seen before. The Palermo leather seats feature quilting on the bolsters complemented by the wrapped door cards. Small details like the bevelled aluminum transmission select knob add to the experience. And the 19-speaker McIntosh stereo bangs so hard a passenger commented she could feel her bones vibrating.

Fortunately, none of the changes on the vehicle compromise the ability to hold cargo — in fact, now an extra 40 litres has opened up. Off Road & Overland Ready

After what seemed like an eternity, Ford finally stepped up to challenge the ubiquitous and heretofore unmatched Jeep Wrangler. For too long, Jeep had enjoyed the distinction of selling the only removable-top, 4x4-centric manual-transmissioned off-road vehicle in North America. Some had come close, but none truly matched the Wrangler’s abilities. As the years went on, Jeep only got better at what they did.

But even after the cover came off the new Bronco, it would be more waiting until the new 4x4 was truly available to anyone who wanted it. After numerous production delays, supply chain constrictions, and heavy demand through backorders, it seems that this Wrangler challenger is finally available on Ford lots throughout the country – and in too many flavours to count. The peak of Bronco-ness, however, is the Wildtrak. This Rubicon-adjacent model flies off the lot with massive tires, off-road suspension, and a suite of technology controls that would make even a Range Rover jealous.

We recently spent some time behind the wheel of a 2021 Bronco Wildtrak in two-door form. Ford offers no fewer than eight named Bronco models, each suited to a different taste or mission. The Wildtrak’s underlying Sasquatch package makes 35-inch tires, high-clearance suspension, and 4.7 ratio axles equipped with locking differentials standard on this model. It can be a bit daunting to navigate all the different Bronco flavours that Ford offers, but if you steer your desires with pricing and purpose in mind, you’ll eventually find a 4x4 that suits your needs.

In addition to the Sasquatch pack, Wildtrak owners get the 2.7L Ecoboost twin-turbo as standard, coupled with the 10-speed automatic transmis sion (a manual, sadly, is not available in any Bronco equipped with this engine.) With a potential 330 horsepower (when splurging on premium fuel, of course) on tap, this motor is what makes the Wildtrak, well, wild. With other models suited to exploring, rock crawling, or cruising, the

2022 Ford Bronco Wildtrak
OFF-rOAD Plus MAGAZINE OCT/NOV 202256

Wildtrak is purpose built for speed, and was tested on off-road racing tracks in California during development. Optional upgrades include a 3.0-inch ‘HOSS’ sus pension, making this Bronco a potential Raptor-lite for those who don’t want the six-figure price tag of the real deal.

Even though it’s not quite a Raptor, the Wildtrak still makes a statement on the road. Something about a factory-de signed big-tire 4x4 just looks “right” and the metallic yellow paint on our test model certainly helped to attract attention, and so did the blacked out grille and hood and optional Wildtrak graphics. Although it’s also available with four doors, the two door version offers eye-pleasing proportions and would be my choice if I needed another 4x4 in the driveway. Shorter wheelbases enhance off-road performance anyway, so it makes sense to pick the smaller option if you’re not hauling lots of passengers around.

If the Wildtrak is built for “high-speed off-roading,” what does that mean, exactly? We’ve all seen videos of Baja trucks plying the deserts of Califor nia and Mexico, but it’s unlikely that you’ll encounter terrain like that here in Canada. Most of our trails and backroads are twisty and tree-lined, with steep drop-offs – not exactly the kind of high-stakes situation you’d want to get your $70,000 4x4 in to. Despite this, you’ll be able to engage an additional “Baja” mode on the terrain management dial, suited for slippery sandy situations where you’d want maximum power to get out of the loose stuff. The real performance boon for this model is on the road, however – and that’s likely where you’ll spend most of your time behind the wheel of any off-roader. Power is delivered promptly and smoothly, laying to rest any argument that low-displacement V6 engines are unsuitable for performance applications. In fact, this 2.7L Ecoboost puts the aging 3.6L Pentastar found in Jeeps in its place – history. Hopefully it won’t be long before Jeep comes up with a suitable challenger.

The aforementioned terrain management system is a bit confusing at first – most of the off-road options can be operated manually, which for many of us is preferable – but once you get the hang of what exactly each mode does (such as Sport, Sand, Mud, Rock Crawl, etc) you might find yourself selecting the dial rather than hunting for buttons. However, there’s something to be said about having just a few basic switches and levers to operate your off-roader. Technology is fantastic but crawling through technical terrain is a very hands-on and manual process, and by adding a few fancy screens and knobs we found that a lot of the charm of getting through said terrain disappears.

The Bronco is available in hundreds of different trim combinations, but it’s still quite difficult to option out a simple base-model version with just a rear locker – out of the box this vehicle is so capable that it’s hard to think that you would ever benefit from adding anything more. Configuring a base Bronco with such equipment quickly forces you in to the $6000+

Sasquatch package. Although there’s value in that option, those look ing for simplicity might be drawn toward an aftermarket solution to keep things simple.

Although it’s a class leader in terms of comfort and utility, we found the fibreglass hardtop to be somewhat useless in our coastal climate. With most of North America seeing rain and snow for most of the year, we wonder if a permanent metal roof would be a better idea someday. It would certainly eliminate the ubiquitous road noise and avoid inevitable leaks that come with age, and give owners a stronger platform for the types of platform roof racks that are so common these days.

Even though it took a bit longer than expected, the Bronco is finally here – and has firmly established itself as a worthy challenger to the 4x4 crown worn by Jeep for so many years. It might be hard to admit, but after driving a Bronco, it truly does seem like independent suspen sion is the future - just ask Land Rover, who after a very long history of solid axles abandoned them for fully independent suspension in their models nearly 20 years ago. With excellent aftermarket support grow ing every day, and a community of owners helping each other navigate overland builds, the Bronco is setting the pace and is sure to stay for many years to come.
