EPA Rainworks Challenge University of Florida - Gainesville, Florida
The University of Florida campus, like many other places, deals with the issue of contaminated water entering bodies of water. In an effort to resolve this issue across several campuses nationwide, the EPA hosts an annual competition for students to design alternative solutions. Through the use of a treatment train, water will collect in rain gardens, catch basins, and bioswales, making its way to a pit, where it will then travel off of campus. Collectively, many LID features will allow treatment at or near the source of contamination.

Yulee Pit, final destination of the Treatment Train.
Rain Garden: This rain garden runs alongside Inner Road, attaching itself to the treatment train.
Treatment Train: Starting north of the Architecture Building, the treatment train meanders all the way to its final location, Yulee Pit
Rain Garden Section: Water will flow into rain garden through curb cuts and exposed piping.
Exposed Piping: This visual is an educational feature that transfers water from adjacent roof tops into the rain garden.

Greening Green Cove Springs Green Cove Springs, Florida
Redevelopment of what was once a thriving town shows the demand of a mixed use and sustainable design. To achieve the Walk – Dine – Stroll effect, multiple retail shops, restaurants, and pedestrian friendly streets must be brought in to provide a sufficient canvas for community involvement. Working within the urban fabric of Green Cove Springs, complete streets invite residents to help restore the economy it once experienced. With this new and inviting atmoshphere, locals will soon begin to restore there economy, one block at a time.

Gamble Rogers
Gamble Rogers is a fictitious project remembering the late folk singer. With the building site already pre-determined, the courtyard to the rear had to be placed into a slope, resulting in a grade change to redirect sheet flow. A project sponsored by Tremron, only their products were to be used. This exercise dove into material selection for both hardscape and softscape. In addition to hardscape design, irrigation for the remaining portions of the site was also added.

Cobblefield
Gainesville, Florida
9
Just west of town, Cobblefield is a single family residential community. A simple, yet clean planting plan was desired to replace the old, outdated and dying landscape. With existing hardscape remaining, a splash of new planting material would brighten up this front entrance.

Kennedy Homes Redevelopment Gainesville, Florida
With the help of the CRA, Kennedy Homes will once again provide affordable housing to residents of East Gainesville. What was once a trouble community faced with the tragedy of fire, the now vacant lot will once again be an important aspect of the community. With this proposed plan, Kennedy Homes will incorporate a variety of home designs through the use of townhomes, single family homes, and apartments. In addition, there will be a mixed use parcel with residential units above shops and restaurants.

Vinik Pool
St. Armands Key, Florida

On the West Coast of Florida, this to be developed home sits right on Sarasota Bay. Multiple pool concepts had been drafted to accommodate several grandchildren while maintaining a modern architectural style. The plan above shows the pool as it were originally drawn, simplistic, yet lacking innovation. With safety concerns on the top of the priority list, the majority of modern trends were discarded. Through the use of SketchUp, 3d renderings were developed to allow the client to set foot in what may be their future pool. To the right are two of the final concepts.

Ashton Oaks Development Sarasota, Florida What was once a small ranch located in a now expanding suburban area, Ashton Oaks a new development in the beginning stages of production. Through surveys and certain stormwater calculations, a retention pond surrounded by a nature walk allows future residents to appreciate natural habitats in a built environment. In addition to site planning, an arterial buffer was required for county submission and approval.

Austin Cary Learning Center
Gainesville, Florida
17
Austin Cary Memorial Forest is a 2,080 acre plot of land in the market of building a learning center. With a few existing buildings on site, the idea of a campus came to light. This site design incorporates the actual learning center, observation towers, burning plots, outdoor learning areas, and an author’s cabin.
Loria Residence Gainesville, Florida
During a home renovation, the owners sought the help of students to help design their second home. After reviewing several design entries, the client chose this pool design and alle of Chickisaw Plums in the front yard. The adjacent pool area allows for a secluded and intimate oasis. The large, open deck allows for several users to enjoy the backyard all at once. The courtyard in the front of the house captures the stormwater from the roof in a small, central retention basin. Other site features include a fenced in area for dogs to run around and an edible garden with raised planter beds.
