1. DEFINITION AND PROPOSED THEME

A group which emerged from social networks as a result of the 1st Meeting on Education in Architecture held in the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid in May of 2014. It is made up of artists, architects, educators, and individuals/groups from different countries interested in education using the medium of construction. 1
‘Public spaces’ are understood as those communal spaces located in urban (street, square, park, playground), rural, natural, school (playground or other communal spaces) environments or even places temporarily given over to communal use (industrial buildings, vacant building plots etc.) 2
“Ludantia” is an international event which seeks to gather into one place knowledge and experience about Education in Architecture for children and youngsters. It is also a platform from which education and research projects - which are concerned with the use of [domestic, urban, communal and natural] spaces and those in which the child or young person is the protagonist - can be shared, broadcast, experienced and debated. On the 16th and 17th of January of this year the 3rd Education in Architecture International Meeting, organised by the Grupo Playgrounds1, was held in the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid. Proposals emerged from this 3rd meeting - one of which was to hold an “International Biennial for education in architecture for children and youngsters.” It is intended that the event provide an opportunity for individuals to exchange experiences regarding education in architecture; and promote deeper understanding of methodology and research in the field. It is also a way of showing the enormous potential children and youngsters have as regards transforming our cities. And the best tool for doing this is educational projects. One of the aims of the people dedicated to education in architecture is to include the child/young person in debates about the city and to act as intermediaries who ensure that their opinion on it (the city) is heard - with the firm belief that this will lead to a better environment. With this in mind, the theme chosen for this first biennial event is that of public spaces2 under the heading: “Living with fun in mind: a games board from the playground to the city.” “Ludantia”, the abbreviated name of the biennial, emerges as a land in which we learn to play in/with space and from which reflection upon the best way to construct the world emerges. It is an event which is open to schools, architects, professionals involved in education, artists, central and local government organisations, not-for-profit organisations and individuals and groups throughout the world interested in education through the medium of construction. Whilst there have been other Educational projects presented in architecture or art biennials Ludantia makes education the end in itself with architectural and artistic processes the medium for achieving this. The first Biennial event – the brainchild of Jorge Raedó – will be held in Pontevedra in April-May of 2018. In the following sections, its content and the various ways in which participants can take part are described in more detail.

2. PHASES AND SCHEDULE

Phase 2: january-march 2018 The committee of experts: - will select a few of the submitted projects for display at the exhibition which will take place in April/May of 2018 in Pontevedra. Projects which meet the stipulated requirements will be broadcast via the biennial website. - will award prizes to 3 of the projects for their innovation and quality and invite their creators (two representatives per group) to give an account or further demonstration of the project in Pontevedra. - will give special mention to 6 outstanding projects - will choose the essays for publication and those which will be displayed in the event itself Phase 3: april-may 2018 The Biennial will be held in two places:
Phase 1: october 2016-decemenber 2017 Educational projects with children and youngsters (up to the age of 18) on the theme of public spaces are proposed. These must comply with the conditions of the below invitation. Schedule: - To obtain information and advice on this event it is recommended that candidates pre-register via info@”Ludantia”.org before the 30th of October, 2016. - Three new registration periods will be opened in January, April and September of 2017 - Educational projects are to be submitted between the 15th of November and the 15th of December, 2017 via info@”Ludantia”.org. Moroever, a window for submitting essays will be made available between September and December of 2017. Requirements for these essays will be made known in September of 2017.
1. Virtual. (Via the biennial website and associated social networks). - All submitted projects will be broadcast - Selected essays will be published - Lectures, news, events, and other relevant functions which may be taking place in Pontevedra will be shown 2. In the city of Pontevedra: - Selected educational projects will be exhibited over the course of a month - The prizes and special mentions will be awarded - A series of conferences on childhood and public spaces will be held over 3 days. The creators of the award winning projects, specialists in the field and the committee of experts will be present - Workshops on architecture and other education-through-play activities focusing on public spaces, directed at the schools and families of Pontevedra and Galicia, will be held

3. TAKING PART IN THE BIENNIAL
-physhical transformation of the space is achieved. The children realise an architectural project or produce a temporary or permanent design (i.e. enhance the school yard, produce a temporary design for a communal square, create a garden plot etc….) -symbolic transformation of the space is achieved. They bolster the mental concept of “public space” (i.e. they create a play, a film, a story etc.…).

The theme of the “1st Education in Architecture for Children and Youngsters International Biennial” is: “Living in communal spaces with fun in mind: a games board from the playground to the city” Communal spaces, both in the town and school, are a right and a responsibility for all of us who live in them. Thinking about these spaces from the perspective of education, showcasing the vision of children and youngsters for transforming them and harvesting their proposals for improving these spaces is the main aim of this event.
The children/youngsters will be the instigators of the work and projects exclusively. However, artists and teachers will be able to help the children express themselves using the techniques of the art form in question. Individuals/organisations/groups who may be working on this subject or who may wish to participate by submitting a project in line with the following conditions, are invited to take part. Essay The aim here is to show the theoretical side of education in architecture. The requirements for these will be made public in September, 2017.
Taking part in the biennial may be via an Educational Project produced with children/youngsters or an Essay. Educational Project Educational projects represent the practical part of education in architecture. The aim of these projects, applied to the theme of the biennial, is: 1. to critically reflect upon public spaces (school, urban and rural). The best way to reflect is to do. To do is to transform the world we live in. 2. to transform these spaces. It is proposed that artistic ‘languages’ (architecture, painting, sculpture, literature, cinema, theatre, dance..) are used as “tools which transform” in such a way as:

4. CONDITIONS FOR TAKING PART REGARDING EDUCATIONAL PROJECTS a. Who can take part? This invitation to take part is open to schools, architects, professionals involved in education, artists, central and local government organisations, not-for-profit organisations and individuals and groups throughout the world interested in education through the medium of construction. b. Schedule - Until the 30th of October, 2016: pre-registrations via email to info@”Ludantia”.org by filling in the following form. Pre-registration will allow participants to receive information, advice and all the news about the biennial - 2017. 3 new windows for pre-registration will be made available in January, April and September. - Educational projects are to be submitted between the 1st and 15th of December, 2017 via email at coordinación@”Ludantia”.org. To submit projects it is not necessary to have pre-registered beforehand. c. Aims of the educational projects 1- To encourage reflection upon/research into common spaces and the learning that takes place in them 2- To use educational tools based around ‘artistic languages’ whose final expression is the creation of a piece of work. Any artistic discipline (architecture, landscaping, drawing, theatrical play, dance, photography) will serve to encourage reflexion upon these public spaces and to improve them. 3- To educate the child (0-18 years) about spatial and architectural concepts and, at the same time, to show his/her point of view. 4- To understand the educational process as a creative one. This will consist in 3 phases: research (time to develop and test); formulation (deciding which path and form to use); and physical execution of the piece of work.
5- To incorporate a final qualitative evaluation of the work done and a “reflective statement”/ conclusion regarding improvements made on the space studied 6- Preferably collaborate during development with teachers/ pedagogues 7- To document the entire process by way of photos, video and texts. d. Qualifying categories Children/youngsters up to 18 years of age will be participating in the projects. Groups may include participants of the same or different ages. Communal spaces in the school, city or countryside will be the focus. 1- Activities (2-5 sessions/ 5-10 hours) • These will focus on a specific space and on a specific aspect of it with both aim and artistic activity clearly defined. The children and youngsters will carry this out with the help of artists/architects in collaboration (preferably) with teachers/educators. The artists/architects may be the only intermediaries in the project. 2- Projects in schools (whether kindergarten/school/secondary school) during school hours. From 20-40 hours. • Teacher + resident artist/architect: the projects will take plac the artist/architect participating actively with the teacher/educational community in an “improvement project.” Both teachers and artists work together as the intermediaries. • Teacher + artist adviser: projects where the teacher is the intermediary, previously advised by specialists in the artistic discipline. These specialists may create certain educational materials

• Teacher: projects in which outside experts in art and architecture are not involved. The teachers devise, prepare, execute and document the entire process. 3- Projects which do not take place during school hours, whether on school premises or premises unrelated to any school. From 20-40 hours. • Art education organisation + school: an outside organisation together with participants from school (i.e. a group of parents from a school) devise and implement the project with the youngsters. The experts in art from the organisation will be the intermediaries, with the possible collaboration of the parents. Other organisations from the community could also join the project. • Art education organisation + community organisation: the organisation of experts in art and architecture education for children are joined by organisations from the community to devise and implement the project with the youngsters. • Art education organisation: the organisation of experts in art and architecture education for children devises and implements the project with the youngsters. They are the only intermediaries in the project.
e. Project documentation to be submitted From the 1st of December, 2017 all the documentation described below is to be sent to coordinación@Ludantia.org . This will have to be written in one of the three official languages of the biennial (Galician, Spanish or English). a. Technical form. A printed form which participants will be able to obtain as of the 1st of December, 2017 is to be filled in. In it, the name of the school/team which has conducted the activity, the city and country of origin, the title of the activity conducted, the type of public space modified, the category (in terms of hours) of the project, the age and number of children participating, the date when the activity took place (indicating start and finish), the artistic technique used and the budget will be specified. b. Documenting. The projects will be documented in two ways: 1. Written documentation. This will consist in: - A text of 1600 words maximum ( approximately one sheet written on both sides) which: • includes the title of the project and country of origin • describes the aims (the problem envisaged or intended to be resolved), methodology used and artistic technique employed • clearly explains the process and work carried out • reflects the three stages of the creative process : research, formulation and implementation - Six photographs of the three phases of the project with a minimum resolution of 300ppp which : • Document the research, formulation and implementation processes • Are (the photos) representative images of the finished work. 2. Audio-visual documentation. This will consist in a video with the following characteristics: - duration : 1 minute minimum ; 3 minutes maximum - authors: produced by the children/youngsters themselves. (They will be allowed to employ the help of an adult

if necessary). - content : an audio-visual letter addressed to the world - picture: long take in motion - sound: the content of the letter. Sound effects may be incorporated - editing : visual together with the long take without cuts or credits on the soundtrack - language : spoken in the language of the country of origin of the authors/creators - appendices : accompanied with a Word document with the transcript of the dialogues in Spanish or English - compressed format f. Selection criteria for projects. Prizes and special mentions. The projects which meet the conditions of the invitation will be shown on the Ludantia website. The committee of experts of the 1st Biennial - will select the projects to be shown in Pontevedra in April-May 2018 (the number of projects selected will depend on the projects submitted). - will choose 9 projects: 6 for special mention and 3 for awards. Those for special mention will not receive financial reward

The organisers will pay for the cost of their journey and stay and will award them a sum as yet to be determined - they will accept as a condition of accepting the prize that the project be left ‘open’ as regards protective licence (i.e copyleft) so it may be reproduced anywhere in the world
The committee of experts will follow the criteria below for selection: - the project should be executed between October, 2016 and December, 2017. - the project should follow the proposed theme. - the project should follow the creative-educational process proposed in the conditions. - the originality of the project. - the ease with which the project can be applied in other areas. The 6 special mentions are divided up in the following way: - 2 for Activities. 2-5 sessions/ 5-10 hours - 2 for projects in schools (whether kindergarten/
