RURAL LANDSCAPE IN VENARIA REALE

STRATEGIC PLAN IN VENARIA REALE, PIEDMONT

Venaria Reale, a historic city with a significant agricultural and industrial past, was chosen as our case study and the main objective defined by us was to revalue the current rural landscape. For the strategic plan the zone was analyzed both directly and with documents, taking into consideration physical, social, economic, legislative and perceptual dimensions. A historic analysis of the area was developed, for that purpose a series of eighteenth-century historical maps were taken to identify elements of the landscape with historic value Subsequently an approach was chosen to address the design phase, in this case "Rural landscape", and La Mandria and the Parco dei Quadrati area south of Venaria Reale were selected as focus areas. A visual on-site analysis of these historic elements was carried out to determine their conservation status and to check their current use. On the other hand, a meeting was held with Dr. Daniele Pesce and with the owners of cascinas where the main problems, strengths and opportunities within the park were reviewed. LOCATION

DIAGNOSIS

La Mandria

DRUENTO VENARIA REALE Parco dei Quadrati

A

Two clear areas have been identified because of their use, ecological and historic value; as well as for the problems they face. La Mandria and Parco dei Quadrati represent very well preserved areas that maintain the original agricultural image and use. Due to their different administration, use and purpose, they need to be managed differently. Three thematic axes are used in order to know the relationship of the territory with their historic values, how people interact with them and their ecological function. SWOT was used as the main tool.

OBJECTIVES AND MAIN CONCERNS

Legal protection Change land use in municipal regulatory plans

PARCO DEI QUADRATI

A. HISTORY. Reinforce the historic value of the rurality with educational focus activities, recovering elements A. PERCEPTION. Stop the deterioration protecting buildings and traditional land uses. B. COMMUNITY. Engage the inhabitants of Venaria Reale with the rural landscape for leisure and education. B. TOURISM. Expand the offer towards the rurality with seasonal activities in an historic setting. B. MOBILITY. Improve the road conditions for the inhabitants and visitors. C. NATURE. Strengthen the ecological value of the area as a part of an ecological network, increasing the canopy in roads and canals.

DESIGN PHASE

Change into agriculture Guided visits to rural landmarks Improve pedestrian and cyclepaths Safe crossroads and bus stops Enhance animal-related activities Repurposed buildings Forestation of historic canals and roads Productive forest borders

1. CULTURE HOUSE & ORCHARD

To preserve and to take advantage of the visual quality, it is proposed to rebuild the bike path next to the road with better environmental comfort for the users.

TOURISM

+ RURAL HERITAGE

AGRICULTURE

Fruit picking Activity for families, it’s possible to obtain fresh fruits selected by the community.

3. PRODUCTIVE FOREST BORDERS

A. HISTORY. Strengthen the historic value of the rural elements, integrating them to a network and with legal protection. B. COMMUNITY. Involve the inhabitants of nearby communities with the rural landscape with academic and interactive activities, and enhance the dialogue of the park with the cascinas. B. TOURISM. Diversify the tourism, adding the rurality as an option, readapting historic buildings and the rediscover of rural lifestyle. C. NATURE. Preserve the ecological balance between ecosystem-rural landscape enhancing the borders with native edible species

2. CYCLE PATH

With the expropriation of the property and its crops, the area can be repurposed for the benefit of the community. With a mulberry orchard, an small hall where people can understand the silk industry that propelled Venaria during the XVIII and XIX centuries and to emphasize its relationship with the Parco dei Quadrati and the Venaria Reale Palace.

Mulberries orchard A picking garden of mulberries would be part of the house of culture where the importance of this tree in the silk industry would be shown

4. SCUOLA DI AGRARIA E MEDICINA VETERINARIA

To enhance the rural activities and aspects, domestic animals could be introduced with the support of the Faculty of Veterinary and Agrary. Repurposed facilities As it was previously used for horse breeding, some buildings can be recovered for its facilities with minimal intervention

+ RURAL HERITAGE

The facilities and structures would be repurposed and recovered, as the Castello della Mandria is a representative point of the park. Student life As a natural ecosystem and agricultural facilities exist in the area, the proximity would increase the practical activities with real settings.

Castello della Mandria To restore the cattle raising activities, the castle would be offered as a campus for the Scuola di Agraria e Medicina Veterinaria.
