Introduction As in Homer's epic poem the Odyssey, some of our students from Monte-Si贸n in Torrent (Spain) have envisioned their homeland in many years time. Their vision of Europe, as the one from Odysseus returning to Ithaca after such a long time, is a picture of what they think our countries might become. Some are very optimistic, some others not that much and, as a curiosity, most of them are extremely ecofriendly. But, regardless what they guess which Europe they might encounter at the end of this century, there is one certain thing: they see themselves as playing roles and even leading characters of their future and thus, they are concern about the Europe they want to leave to their children. This is there portrait of Europe and themselves in the future. Despite of some grammar mistakes, which our students might have committed (and for that we asked for your indulgence), their visions are absolutely enlightening and worth reading them. We hope you like them.

My Ithaca

by SebastiĂ SĂĄnchez Let's start a game. Imagine your future. Take a few seconds if you need it. Have you already done it? So, now, let me think about how I hope it will be and what concerns me. Obviously, making a speech about that is not an easy task since there are many topics to talk about. Because of that, let me point out one: population is structured by age. Our society is becoming older due to the decrease in birth rates; which means a real problem. That also means we will have to change our lifestyle: education will be a harder process and we will keep working until an advanced age.

However, that's only a prediction. Maybe you have another. And, probably, we agree that the most important should be our goals and achievements. I just wish we would get them and that's the game I mentioned at the beginning. Never forget it.

by Pablo Andreu

It is 2075 and Europe changed dramatically since 2015. Everything changed when Greece ran out of money due the 2008 crisis and started a civil war that resulted in the complete destruction of the country. Now it is property of no one and the new URSS and Europe are fighting to own it. European limits also changed because of the climatic and some tectonic changes that seem to be caused by the 2016 United Kingdom’s earthquake that resulted in a nuclear explosion called UKushima. Now Spain is no longer a peninsula, it is an island located near Italy and a United States ally, living in a tense peace with Europe and URSS as a neutral country. New Europe

I think that, when we are guessing how the future will be, we have to be clear that you must use a negative and a positive point of view. I'm not a very imaginative person, but if I have in mind the current situation, I can say almost certainly what Europe would be like. Currently, our lives, are based on technology, are connected to each other all the time. On the one hand it is good because then you can contact with that person in time, but what chance would be a week without Internet? That would have been impossible because we have all become robots. Earrings mobile or social networks. I don’t want to turn this in a pessimistic view. But the Europe of the future will be colder, I mean, relationships between people now rely on sending nice and romantic WhatsApps before bedtime. But not everything is bad. We will develop an important role, we will be able to discover many technological advances, for example in medicine. There will be more cures and more facilities to operate. In aesthetics… few monuments in cities will all be replaced by new and more modern, nothing from the past will remain. Finally, I will say that we should not be afraid of the future, it's just a picture of a girl of 18 years. We can change things that harm us. If you dream it, you can do it.

by Carlos Badenes Unfortunately, scientists warned people not to pollute too much because of smog and wastes that are produced by humans who are causing global warming, above all we can’t talk about how Europe will be in the future, however if we follow the environmentalists’ suggestions we will change the world. Therefore, now I’m going to talk about Europe, Monte-Sión, which is my secondary school, and my life in the future from my point of view. Nowadays, I’m studying in Monte-Sión, which is an enormous building that inevitably is a little ancient.

Moreover, here pupils are taught to be honest and to think in the future of the planet. It is a great honor to form us and specially the last course students, who are leaving the school in June, to have spent here our childhood and part of our adolescence.

page

As a result of studying in Monte-Sión since 3ºESO, I would like to come a chemist, hence I can help people, who haven’t got any money, giving them a lot of medicines. This idea appeared in my head when doctors complained that drugs were too expensive. Therefore, this fact was an opportunity to change the world. I like chemists

To sum up, the world is being destroyed by humans. Despite this, thanks to environmentalist that encourage schools and people to change this situation in a short time, we will have a new Earth and a new Europe without problems. Nevertheless, Monte-Sión shouldn’t change because of the wonderful essence that there is along the corridors

Have you ever thought about the future when you are old? Sometimes I make this question to myself, and the answer isn’t easy at all. In the last 60 years, a lot of moral questions have changed, like equality between men and women, racial problems or immigration. Values that have never been raised. I’m not talking about an utopia, but I clearly think that the mentality of our society can change for the next 60 years. Anyway, I think our future is to appreciate the moral values and not in our physical finding. Summing up, all that we need is a good education and means, and wait for the inevitable result.

In my opinion within 80 years many things in Europe will have changed a lot, since technology will be much more developed and will change many things. In the field of education paper books will already not be used, since they will have been replaced by other electronics and more eco-friendly devices. Also in the field of Motorsport will have gone a long way, because we will have found other renewable sources of energy that spend less and are less polluting. Finally I want to say that in 80 years Europeans will have built a better world with something that we can leave to the following generations.

I am positive and I imagine a more fair and equal Europe. I imagine a world where there is no discrimination of any kind, where nobody starves, where everyone can come and go wherever you want and live where they want without fear of being expelled, where justice works, where the prison system reinsert the not punish offenders and punish, in short, imagine a world where everyone is happy. As for me, I see myself being criminologist. Having a family with three children, two girls and a boy. Also I see myself living in a house in Madrid with a modest garden and a swimming pool for hot days. Ultimately, I see fair world where everyone can fulfil our dreams.

Nowadays, living in Spain is quite difficult because there are few jobs and investments in technologies. Although I think that things will change in the future. In 2045, there will not be any illnesses because medicine will have solutions for all type of pains. Technology will have improved and we will be able to see it in the transport, for that reason cars and buses will not pollute and as a consequence there will not have global warming. Moreover, robots will be invented for doing our lives easier. These machines will clean and will help us as much as possible. As a conclusion, from my point of view, our future will be positive not only for us but also for environment.

by Maria Pilar MartĂnez We do not know which our future or Europe's will exactly be. But, what we know, is that our way of thinking and acting and of course our society, will change in a few years. Personal changes will make our country to change and if our country changes, Europe will change too. Throughout history, there have been changes for worse, but over the time they have been solved and have helped our society. Now, our generation must promote changes in attitudes and actions that make Europeans live better. Changes must be aimed to improve the situation of the inhabitants who live in this old continent. These changes have to start from our way of thinking and react to upcoming events in the right way. The hope and the positive attitude of our generation should be the starting point. We need to encourage personal and small changes that will give a better coexistence to our society. These changes will lead to technological advances that when they are applied to food, environment or medicine, our lives will get improved. Education and Science should promote more jobs to improve the socioeconomic situation of people.

by Laura Carratalรก Hello, my name is Laura and I am 15 years old. I know that when I'll be 45 years old, the world is going to be different than it is now. We will study different things and work in different jobs with different objectives to get. But not just jobs and things are going to be different, we are going to. Europe will improve and modernize its infrastructures and invest in investigation and education. It will let us discover new things and get advances in high technology and medicine. That, unfortunately, will have bad consequences in the environment and in the ecosystems. We will start then taking care of the wildlife, but it is a really long way to tour: get a cleaner and a better world. In my opinion, I will work in a big business, maybe enforcing the laws as a lawyer or working in the creative part as a publicist. I hope that my work let me travel all over the world, especially in the UE.

As an example, I think that when I will turn 40 the world will have changed a lot, but I hope that politicians will turn into something different, because almost nobody agrees with the system we are having now. In my view, a solution could be to develope and improve artificial intelligence machine. In that way, they could rule the world in an impartial way and the corruption will gradually disappear. Moreover, we wouldn't have wars and also a lot of difficulties will be reduced. To sum up, artificial intelligence will be able to solve Europeans problems, although I know it is an utopia.

Today, 3rd May of 2065, is when we can say a new completely sustainable world has been created and the reason is that after 50 years closing oil wells and natural gas storage the last nuclear power plant has been finally closed. As our necessity of energy has been growing faster and faster in the latter hundred years, there was a requirement as well of searching for new ways to meet these needs. Thanks to the work of the engineers and other staff who have worked all these years to make the project real, even when it was economically worse than using no renewable energy, nowadays we can see everywhere solar panels or wind power mills that make our planet cleaner and with less social inequality too.

In my opinion, Europe won't be very different in the future. Maybe in 60 years, the most characteristic change is the new electric vehicles. The reason is the price of fuel that it is very expensive and the disappearance of oil. In turn, electric cars are more eco-friendly and less noisy. The streets won't have those dirty gas stations that will be changed for boxes with the size of a cigarette machine, much cleaner, ecological and pleasing. Fortunately, the price of these vehicles will be reduced and the streets will be happier because we will see families enjoying their vehicle without damaging the environment. Mainly, I don't know what I will be doing in sixty years, neither what I will be in five years. If I'm healthy, I'm going to enjoy life to the fullest as any teenager would do. Now I don't think about the future, neither in the future I won't think what it was before.

Personally I think that in fifty years Europe will be more dirty and polluted as measures against air pollution are not being taken. In some cities people won't be able to see the sky, or even airplanes! We will have to wear masks to breathe, avoid body contact, children cannot shake hands with their parents to prevent illness, Doctors will even invent a ball insulating plastic to prevent contagion, etc.

Is this the Europe we want? I honestly do not want my grandchildren to be born in a place like this and for that we have to take care of our land. If we do not change, Europe is doomed. To avoid this, European citizens should promote projects from young environmentalists from universities and try to find a solution.

I am Jorge, I am 18 years old and I am Spanish, therefore I am also European as the majority of that you are reading this writing. My teacher says that this book will be unique. The truth is that he is right because here they will open a multitude project to improve our continent. I also wanted to reach mine. In a not very distant future Europe will turn into the major continent of the world because it will be replete with spectacular and entertaining fairgrounds and a major number of countries as with cities. Also it will be very ecological, the citizens will be transported by bicycles, through the whole Europe. These bicycles will work alone obviously. In this wonderful Europe it could not be absent the gigantic skyscrapers and here it is where I enter. I meet as the best architect of the whole Europe constructing numerous skyscrapers in order that the people could live. In fact they will be with all kinds of luxuries. If this was fulfilled, I will be crammed with work, because the people of the whole world will want to come to live through the wonderful Europe.

by Álvaro Fernández I’m going to talk about my point of view of society will be in the future. Starting by transport, people will make more use of the public transport because this will be the most important way to travel. High speed trains will be cheaper, fastest and more comfortable than they are now. Cars will disappear because of their pollution and buses and taxis will be replaced by those trains even though they could still be used. Secondly I’m going to talk about education. Schools will disappear because of the Internet. Children could learn by following teachers explanation in Youtube or in real time with other applications.

page

Ending, I think in the different kind of jobs people will be replaced by machines which will work faster and easier than people could do it.

In conclusion the world will be led by machines and living could be easier for all of us. We will have more free time for spend with family or friends and stress won’t exist.

I think that in 50 years Europe won’t have changed too much, but I believe that there will be some changes, because people want to improve their lives and scientists should create amazing devices that will make our daily life easier than in the traditional ways, as they have so far. In my opinion, where more changes will be produced will be in technology, because the companies need to make new and improved products for people. I hope that cars won't have to need oil in the future, and we will discover another way to make them work, but I’m sure that I’m going to buy a special robot, which will clean my house, cook ,work for me and my family or we will have a robot like a pet maybe.

Probably when we try to imagine how incredibly amazing and unexpected the future of our lives will be, we forget some aspects that we must recognize. People of several countries like Spain, Italy or Sweden, can enjoy a calm and happy life. They for sure are going to have a lot of opportunities to get a job in the future, or simply they will be able to develop their life’s projects. Now, we have to thank to the governments of these states and, why not, to the European Union. EU accepts the multicultural community. Still you are from Egypt, Iraq, China or Brazil, you are going to cover all your needs, if you live in a country from the EU. The EU was created from one special moment: the end of the II world war. Since that fact, all countries decided that they were going to protect themselves to avoid all types of problems and try to guarantee their citizens that they will have good conditions of life and dignity. This solidarity purpose has evolved until we perceive it nowadays: ‘’A situation where we can be happy (what is really more important), and we can get all our dreams’’.

page

In addition, we should remember what the EU is concerned about: The EU tries to develop projects of studying and wants to offer a public and free education to everyone, including interchange studying projects and wonderful opportunities. Finally all these things explain why we have to take care about our EU, don’t forget that we are implicated in this!

by Ver贸nica Jim茅nez My vision of Europe in fifty years is quite hard. At this rate our standard of living will be no more than survival. Precarious jobs, a horrible health system and completely private education, basically aimed at people with greater purchasing power than the supposed '' middle class ''. But the hardest thing is that I see no future, that is, that Europe as we know it will not exist. Our society is nothing more than a figment of political ideologies created for a security based on fear. It is said that history is cyclical, well, fifty years ago the situation was similar to the present, where the retrograde and class thinking reigned, where public deficits were quite evident. This means that within another fifty years we will be back to the same, I hope this situation will not be performed. At that time almost as seventy and after a working life dedicated to others (I hope), I honestly see myself or working hard to continue to support my family or retired and depending on my family, since my job quote I will not come to possess a life of survival.

Europe, a continent in progress. Nowadays, science is being more valuated by society and technology is beginning to take part in several spaces .For example, there are places where people use tablets or laptops instead of books. So in the future, will science have developed technology enough? Approximately in 70 years, technology will probably have made our lives easy. Public transports will work with ecological power systems like sun energy and new ecological fuel will be discovered. Medicine science will be so advanced that the majority of the diseases could be healed producing an increase of life expectancy .We will live just 110 years old. To summarise my children will be able to enjoy an amount of advances in their lives and I hope to be able too.

by Anna Andreu

Applying new technology in our lives like computers in school or mobile phones all the time gives us the ability to be more efficient and manageable with gadgets but, is it that necessary? I mean someday in Europe wi-fi could be cut out and all our logical way of figuring out stuff will be doomed. I guess the movie Wall-e wouldn´t be so fictional after all and it could turn out to be… reality? I hope not. I couldn’t imagine humans in a chair all day obsessed with their social network… wait, that’s already happening! Well, we can’t wait for microscopic chips in our brain so we won’t have to study, like in Matrix, but let´s not give it too much focus- it sounds kind of creepy.

Things have changed a lot over the last 30 or 40 years, but we will say this in 2056, too. Now, I'm going to talk about possible changes in the world within 40 years. On the one hand, nowadays, transports damage the environment, therefore, I think that in the future they will be electric, some of them will rise from the ground or they will be autonomous, so, there will be an intelligent vehicle which will work on its own. In addition, if there are still serious fires as a consequence of the sun, increasingly powerful, or as a result of people who do not care what they have, and if still animal species are dying, green landscapes and animal wildlife will be more difficult to see than today. Moreover, I would like to see all the changes that can happen in the garb of a national police, fighting for justice in this country and next to all the good friends I have now, my wife and my two children who will be called Ă?ker and Triana. In conclusion, the world is changing over the years and you do not know what the future will bring, but I think that everything new will be better for everyone.

In the future the educative system will be very different from what it is nowadays in Europe. To start with, lessons will be “Flipped Classroom in which students will explain the contents through projects and teachers will listen to them to check that they are doing it well. Some lessons will take place through the internet such as a moodle platform or virtual area. In this way pupils will work individually, but in this case competiveness among students will not exist as the mark the teacher gives them will remain a personal and private aspect. To sum up children who will be studying in so many years time will spend most of their time in front of laptops or tablets in order to come along with their studies.

There’s not anything to say. It´s simple. The European policy is based on an enormous lay where people think that they are living in a fantastic world with a few problems to solve but it isn´t only that. Corrupt government, hungry, racism, selfishness, … those are characteristics of our government systems that we should change. So I hope that in 70 years all these things will have changed or some of them at least. But if people don´t take care of their way of life, values won´t be respected and people will have worse lives.

Houses on the outside are like a hen egg and inside are pretty and full of things like flying televisions and holograms and they also have robots for cleaning and taking care of the house. People no longer cook, they only work in improving energy and medicine. I work as a doctor studying new diseases and curing people, today the only valuable professions are few, the most important are medical, builder professor and engineer, because they are the only ones that are useful to us and we are now looking for a cure for a very dangerous disease because it is possible that mankind comes to an end. This disease was originated after the third world war consisting of sun control should prevent this from happening so that the disease can't develop.

The future is not too far, because Europe was now a little bad and in a few years many things will evolve as technology, currency, politics, etc ... That this is what people will try. People want Europe to evolve and that is what is being attempted. Europeans wish that we could live better every year, where life conditions in every European country might change and where everyone is entitled to do anything (as treating everyone as being equal). Finally, one of the things that Europe has to change is that men and women have all the rights to live, because we are all people and we can do anything equally. And that's one of the major problems in Europe: the inequality.

In addition, my research team and I have created this robot with the finality to help, however this robot cannot go to work. People continue working, earning a good salary and they are not used to an easy life. Our robots have guarantee of security: you don´t have to be afraid to robots getting crazy and dominating the world like in films in the past. Therefore doctors decided to implant the Mediterranean diet in all countries because they saw that gave very good results, in all restaurants people ate this diet and most importantly places where sell fast food is sold are banned so now there aren´t problems with food. First, I think the economy will have improved significantly, since we are living the time of crisis now. The labour market will be more open and will lower the number of unemployed people. Because of this, there will be more production and people will buy more things, since prices won’t be as high as now. Another aspect is society. Obviously, society will be much more advanced and people will have a more comfortable life than now, since technology will make their lives easier. But there is a negative thing, and it is that with technology growing, every time people will become lazier and lazier, and this will suppose a health problem. And to finish, politics: I imagine that politicians of that time will have learned from mistakes and have built a better Spain and Europe.

Europe will have improved both technologically and socially that is to say that people will make life much easier thanks to technological advances like robots do the tutoring much easier so making education better or also with machines so you just have to put a code so they do what you want. Socially I hope people would get better with this I mean that both health, physically and mentally people go better and economically I hope we'd have found some way to improve. With this I mean I have the hope that Europe will be much better.

Hi! We are in 2050 and I will tell you one of the things that has changed a lot. Before we saw the great obsession in some people, when summer comes, to get slim, this becomes a problem. They spent time and money going to magical places to take potions which claim to lose people's weight. But now, everything has changed and we wonder窶ヲ why? It is a question we can answer with one word: FASHION. As a matter of fact, fashion will continue conditioning people. Today, you can go to the beach without any complex and no strange look. But let me warn you, you see carefully not going to be getting caught changing fashion on the beach.

I think that the world in fifty years will become more comfortable than is nowadays, and as a consequence of this, many people will became fat. Some of the advantages of the new Europe is that mechanic stairs will be in all places, in all streets and in all houses. Robots will do all the work, like hard jobs and domestic tasks. And people won’t use the money, because they can get all that they desire only pressing the button of their wishes machine.

When this time arrives, I’ll be old, but I imagine the life of millions of people being very boring, and to avoid it, we should respect all the traditions, popular celebrations and manners that we have today.

by Javier Andrés Martínez The first that I have to say is: don’t think about the future, but I can imagine. So, I believe that Europe will come out of the crisis with the help of both justice and people. Also, as technology advances, we no longer will need computers. Why? That’s because everything we will have in portable devices of commonly use. Regarding the cars, it is obvious that all of them will be hybrids. As for me, I have no idea what future holds to me but I like to think that I’m cooking for one of the bests restaurants or that football will give me another chance and I will be playing for the national team of Ecuador .

by Maria Amparo Guzmรกn In my opinion, in the Europe of the future the political class will not exist. After the crisis, the society will distribute into three parts according to age. Older people, from seventy years, adults, from thirty to seventy, and the young people from fifteen to thirty. With this distribution, all part of decisions of all levels and it has in mind the needs of the three estates, in this way, nobody is discontent. On the other hand, the technology also will be advanced, creating cars that can fly, buildings that functions with renewable energy and other useful inventions to conserve the environment. In conclusion, my role in that society will be being part of the group of older people and contribute my ideas to have a sustainable society.

In a probable future, I see Europe with an overpopulation of aged people because life expectancy will increase due to an improvement in the quality of life. I think that in 50 years life expectancy of a person may even reach 95 years, at minimum. This may be attributed to pharmacists, who will make a great improvement and development in order to prevent most serious diseases, such as cancer, heart problems and AIDS or to lessen them in cases where avoiding their onset has not been possible. Other improvement will be reached in transport. The way to get around will be much easier, cars will develop until the point that they can fly and even be operated alone to reach our desired destination. These automatic cars will not cause accidents. Besides that, vehicles will use ecofriendly energy, small solar panels on the roof. In 50 years I see myself married with two children. I will be working in psychology at a school in Valencia because the retirement age will have increased because of this improved lifestyle. And whenever is possible, I will take the chance to travel to other countries, to see the world and get to know other cultures.

by Pedro Montรกvez Once upon a time a rich man named Pedro who owned the best futuristic companies were doing innovations not caring for people's welfare but just for the companies' own interests. Europe's economy, thanks to entrepreneurs like Pedro, not helping needy people increasingly worse and passed it sank to small businesses, made plummet Europe and Africa , the continent more developed had to help them. For these reasons, people will not be able to fulfil their dreams in the future, and only a lucky can live thanks to the underprivileged who have to survive as possible and also pass many suicides of people who cannot handle their situation and seeks solutions.

I think that some people don't forget the old problems and insults of the past or others that are occurring now. A result of this was that international relations are worsen and, as it formerly was, it will make a game of alliances.

In addition capitalism, as many thinkers claim, will continue with their economical increase and their economical fall. But the war will not occur unless the future big countries are interested or even the countries will not want to go to war for the great warlike developments which could destroy the planet.

For these reasons nationalist candidates will surely emerge in some countries.

Eventually people will realize that English is not the appropriate language to communicate internationally and will change to Spanish.

In my opinion, Europe in 50 years will be very different from what is now with changes mainly in all aspects. On the one hand, technology will evolve to the point where robots do the role of society and people will have a positive future because people will have a good life expectancy and that would cause people to live more. Also education for children will change as they will have access to everything but responsibly. The Cities of Europe will be full of robots to develop every activities for example food, cleaning the house or doing homework that would be great for students On the other hand, Europe will be very different economically because no new systems of work for everyone won’t run without it. Finally, this Europe seems perfect as it is very different and with a technology that everyone will wish.

by Jackeline Romero If we look long time ago, we will observe technological advances, that has been happening over time. We have seen remarkable improvements, so nowadays smart phones seem tablets and tablets seem televisions. Europe is completely filled of modernity, therefore unnecessary things become essential to our daily lives. In a few years, electric cars will be available, people will be able to travel into space and I don’t know if conveyors may exist. Although there are a little problem, what kind of people can use all these developments? Those people that their economy has allowed them to do so, since ever. Meanwhile, nothing will change for other people. Now and in the future, Europe will keep on full of dreams, because humans never stop dreaming. Europe will be full of objectives of this generation or the next, which are in search of a better life. Europe will keep on full of fighters, who look for food and work daily to remain in the world. It will continue full of heroes who migrate to support their family. Europe will continue full of superfluous necessities, which all social classes won’t enjoy. Sometimes, when I look ahead I can see my future cloudy, with several unknowns and few clear ideas. In a future I would like to be useful to society and I hope I have fulfilled all my goals and I have some new dreams. Today, I can’t repeat to myself “every effort will be rewarded”.

If I had to find a word to describe how I see Europe in thirty years that word would probably be union. I do not know if we will have those flying cars which come out in movies, or our own spacecrafts, working as if they were our current cars, which we could use for tourist trips to the Moon; but ... who knows? Maybe one day we will have them because technology progresses at the speed of light. Of what I’m really sure is that everyone will have to talk at least three languages and have a higher minimum education because of the union of what I’ve talked before. Something that I hope is that in all of the European countries, its citizens, as in Spain, become entitled to social security and they do not have to pay a large sum of money every time they go to the doctor; because every human in the whole world should have the right of a free health service.
