Moving Waves

The Moving Waves Photo Tour is part of the Atlantic Realm Tour and Experience (aka Atlantic Realm Tour), a series of photographic journeys in the coastal areas of the Atlantic Ocean, the coast some historians suggest was once part of Atlantis, the Lost Continent. While the Atlantic Realm Tour and Experience encompasses multiple possible voyages and photographic activities within a stretch of coast that goes from Cabo da Roca to some 100 kilometers north, the Moving Waves photo tour centers on the experience of photographing waves in specific areas of the coast, to create a unique slideshow of... moving waves.

Ophiussa

Back after the places we spoke of above, there opens a great bay filled with water, all the way to Ophiussa. Back from the shore of this place, to the inland water, through which I said before that the sea insinuates itself through the land, and which they call Sardum, the journey extends for seven days on foot. Ophiussa extends its side, being as large as you hear the Island of Pelops lying in the territory of the Greeks is. This land was originally called Oestrymnis by those who inhabited the Oestrymnian countryside and region, much later the serpent chased away the inhabitants and gave the now empty land its name. Where Land Ends and Sea Begins

The Atlantic Realm coast is a unique scenery easily experienced from areas photographers of all ages can access. The incredible coastal area around the most western point of Europe, Cabo da Roca, where land end and sea begins, is not only a place of myth and legend, but a photographic paradise yet untapped. The Atlantic Realm Tour takes place on this coast, the place where, in the old days, the Sun died on the Ocean. From the dramatic cliffs coastline to the cascading village of Azenhas do Mar, we visit some of the best spots to photograph rolling waves crashing against the imense boulders on the rocky coast. From strange formations that resemble animals to sandy beaches, there is a lot to photograph, both on land, sea and sky, even if this tour is centered on the creation of series of images of the waves moving towards the coast.

The Moving Waves Photo Tour

This is a three part experience. We start by photographing waves on some points of the Atlantic Coast, on a whole day photo tour. This activity can be taken on its own. The resulting images will be a memory of the day. For those that want to go further, there are two extra steps involved in the Moving Waves: editing the series of images in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 in a new session, followed by the creation of a slideshow of Moving Waves, on the last session, using the program ProShow Gold from Photodex.

What You Need

For the first part of the Moving Waves experience each participant needs: A DSLR camera with lenses. A wide angle zoom is a must, but having a medium zoom and a long lens offers more options. A cable release or any other trigger device, as touching the camera is not an option. A polarizer or, better, a set of Neutral Density filters. A Variable ND filter is the best option. A sturdy tripod! Lots of patience!

Philosophy

The Atlantic Realm Tour is built around the idea that Photography happens when mind, heart and vision "speak a common language", creating a contemplative state, a moment when the photographer understands the subject photographed. The enso (“circle”), a symbol of Zen Buddhism, representing the moment the mind is free to let the spirit create, is associated with the Atlantic Realm Tour. It is a symbol of infinity, and represents the infinite void, the ‘no-thing,’ the perfect meditative state, and enlightenment. And Light is something we always need in Photography.
