RESEARCH. An Introduction to Bouldering.

Me: what lead you to an interest in bouldering in particular?

Chris: I started outdoor climbing and was introduced to a number of prolific crags (smaller features used for outdoor bouldering) and got really into the low problem climbs and from there just got more and more into the practice.

Research into bouldering and the techniques and equipment involved provided an understanding of the sport. First hand viewing of climbers in practice, along with focussed questionnaires, further informed the comprehension. A combination of verbal, written, and visual exposure to the sport fed the interest.

UNDERSTANDING.

First hand application and exploration into bouldering practice lead to a more informed understanding. Technique and route tutorials, along with exercise regime, increased the ability. This personal practice fed the design development in line with the topic.

The combination of fonts were chosen as a serif/sans serif contrast in line with heading and body importance respectively. The slab serif was chosen to mimic the aesthetics of climbing routes. The colour scheme was chosen in line with the common format found in most bouldering magazines. Stock choice was based on a contrast with the colour scheme and because the grainy, textured finish relates well to rock. The size was chosen due to a combination of mobility and amount of contents within.

STUDIO BRIEF 1.

PRODUCTION.

The saddle stitch method was used to bind the pages together.

Two cover boards were cut from corrugated cardboard, which were then secured around the pages via further saddler stitch.

The outer spine of the cover was then bound using the Japanese stitch method. A stencil of the title was hand cut and sprayed onto the cover board. These decisions were made in line with the hands on ethos of bouldering, along with the craft side of route making.

OUTCOMES.

The outcome reflects both the aesthetics and ideals present in bouldering. The hand made aspect works in line with the physicality of the sport; its roughness and durability. The simplicity of the layout and content relate well to the climbers ‘no nonsense’ ethos.
