External Reference won several prizes participating in international competition including first prize for the Spanish Pavilion’s exhibition space, the ONU-Art Consensus exhibition, the project Le corti di Buenos Aires, Milano and developed the winning proposal for the Toulouse Aerospace Campus in collaboration with Foreign Office Architects. External Reference’s projects have been exhibited in the Venice’s 12th International Architecture Exhibition Biennale and Eme3. Interested in the materialization of the projects the office team is constantly researching through lecturing and teaching at IED, Instituto Europeo di Design, Barcelona, ELISAVA and UIC, Universidad Internacional de Cataluña in Barcelona; NABA, Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, Milano and in collaboration with Welsh School of Architecture Cardiff University. Most of the relevant projects are published in several magazines including Il Sole 24 ore, Pasajes de Arquitectura, Metalocus, Via Construcción, Future, Disey Magazine, Magazine-La Vanguardia, Blueprint, Materia.

The design winner for Courts Baires is not only an action for recovery of the existing building, but also the transformation of the structure and the urban landscape. The complex consists of five buildings connected by a shopping arcade and is located in the tail end of Corso Buenos Aires to Milan, historic commercial thoroughfare of the city. In this segment of road, the intensity of commercial activities is lower due to the distance from the city center and therefore needs to improve its visibility and attractiveness. With this objective we have inserted a mall, a hotel, a spa, apartments and offices, schedules and activities with different intensity of work to stay active for twenty-four hours a day.
The new hotel, a glass and wire mesh that replaces an existing building of little value, represents the inner core of the intervention and the active center of the plot. A new concrete screed plate gives uniformity and continuity to the ways of commercial galleries.
The activity provides an attractive since putno commercially because they are located on the road in front of a hotel, wellness center, offices and apartments occupying the innermost parts of the block and reserved. The building to the mall is transformed through large openings in the facade, which coincide with the elements of movement and reveal the flow of pedestrian public. The gable of the building is replaced by a block of flats which can absorb part of the restructuring costs.

The competition site is located close to the main transport, cultural facilities and, at the same time, a five minute walk to the old industrial area. The location has good potential as a center for offices, business, conferences and leisure. Commercial and catering activities, which are intense in the city center, start to fade along the borders of the river. New commercial programs together with bars and restaurants will attract both the people who work on the opposite side of the river and those who live and work in the center. Before the Brewery wharf was built there were few conference venues close to the site. The introduction of new conference spaces will establish the area as an ideal place for business and meetings.There are few Spa centers in Leeds and new ones close to the site are reported to be lacking in service.Wellness activities integrate perfectly in business and city center environments. Visual Landmark VS Periscope Tall buildings, being visible from long distances, act as reference points but have no relation with the site context and with human scale. Landmarks do not interact with the city, they simply express their presence. Our building functions as a periscope. Through the inclination of its glass facades the reflections

of the city will be visible around the surrounding building area. Structural Concept The main aim of the stuctural design was to provide maximum flexibility of floor surface and avoid large structural elements. The main supporting system is a light structural skin called diagrid which wraps the built volume. The scale of the diagrid varies according to load distribution and building geometry and its density is calculated through a step by step process. The floor slabs, the perimetral and transversal beams, the elevator/stair cores complete the structural system. The diagrid optimizes the use of metal elements through the concentration of matter in the most loaded zones and leaves large areas free of structural elements.

This project tells the story of: 1) a Catalan family, 2) a newborn architectural firm and 3) the Spanish crisis. In Catalunya, on land located in S. Pere de Ribes, the dream of every Mediterranean family becomes true: the construction of a five-store building where grandparents, parents and children can live together. The architectural firm called External Reference has designed a proposal aimed to reconcile the needs of grandparents, parents and children, as well as the rigid building restrictions. The result is a block of bricks abraded by legal constraints and the inhabitants’ needs. The project, completed and approved by the Municipality, will remain in the architectural magazines waiting for banks to finance this Catalan family’s dream.

If one has never heard about Irkusk he would be surprised discovering is a 200.000 inhabitants city undergoing an incredible economy growth. Iirkusk is a small Russian city closer to Japan than to Europe wich is expanding its surface beyond the river and claiming for brand new and breaking through architecture. Promoters entering the european EC market are more interested in being up to date than in selling local culture. They claim the right to take part in to the international economy and architecture could be the ultimate existence statement. Weather: Irkusk is city with a continental climate with huge temperature excursions and a minimum of -20 C in winter. Most of public activities happen in conditioned indoor spaces and open air displacements are reduced to the minimum. This factor open an opportunity for the research on high intensity spaces where a great number of activities coexist in the same area.
highway bridge on its third side. Since there is no masterplan yet the skyscraper should be flexible to any kind of urbanization and adaptable to any part of the site. We proposed to locate our bulding at the end of the highway bridge which connects the existing city with the site in order to generate high concentration and link the old with the new. Intensity: In our proposal the surface of four traditional skyscrapers is gathered in one single building in order to achieve the maximum of intensity and concentrate a large amount of activities as shops, services and events. The building, converted in a vertical city, reduces long outdoor displacemets offering a bioclimatic controlled environment. Program: More then a specialized district the buildings is a 24 hours open pole which combines dwellings, commerce, offices and services.

Poblenou, a former industrial district of Barcelona, has been transformed in the 22 @ technology district during the last decade: a new model of compact city, where innovative companies co-exist with research, training and tech transfer centers, as well as housing, facilities, green areas and industrial heritage. Gaes, a hearing aid company in the 22 @, represents the case of an old Catalan industry in Poblenou that has become during the same period a multinational corporation with an industrial integrated model of research, clean production and marketing. A hearing aid device is very sophisticated product. Very different from old trumpets, it incorporates a customized chip adapted to each user. Production use microscopes in a white laboratory-like spaces and generates no waste: the type of industry that could be perfectly integrated into the city. The building conceptually and formally responds to these conditions of high sophistication, precision and cutting edge technology integrated into the architecture in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency. clip that dynamically protects from sun. The location of voids is one of the main strategies of the interior layout. The first one is a triple height lobby at the main entrance. A second larger void, the atrium, connects all floors. It collects light from the deck through two large skylights and leads it to the ground floor with slight reflections in the glass with different degrees of transparency and translucency. The skylights form in the top floor two suspended courtyards creating a play of reflections and transparencies between the exterior and interior.

The Biomedical Research Park is located on the Barcelona seafront, next to the Hospital del Mar. The environs of the site are characterised by the proliferation of singular buildings: the two large towers of the Olympic Village, the new Gas Natural building, a small tower of housing units, the mono-block tower of the Hospital del Mar, the fish sculpture by Frank Gehry and a sports centre in the process of restoration. The strategy before this setting has been to absorb the sports centre in the process of restoration into the complex of the Biomedical Research Park, placing it beneath it. Furthermore, we sought a volumetry that did not wish to compete in height with the nearby buildings but which formally relates to and maintains a dialogue with all of them. We proposed a large platform that arranged the site which was quite irregular. The placing of a building raised in the form of a trunk with an elliptical cone, cut diagonally, has enabled us to organise the setting and relate calmly with the nearby volumes. The elliptical shape arises from the need to adapt a very large building (some 35,000 m2 above ground level) on a very tightfitting site, irregular in shape and with different surrounding volumes.

The construction was planned necessarily compact in order to adapt to the site, but scales down towards the sea, softening the seafront and adapting to the buildings of the promenade, which in this part are low in height. At the back, on the side facing the city, it was decided to raise the building since it had sufficient space. This staggered form towards the sea enables solar plaques to be placed on the roof to produce hot water and electricity. The interior of the building is emptied to create a new reality independent of the setting, which frames and controls the sea views and which also enables the sunlight to be controlled. The structure of the building is suspended some 7 metres all around its perimeter. The covering of the façade was planned in light, wooden openwork, without touching the ground; the aim is to take away weight in a building which for its compact and unitary conception is large in size. This second skin must enable good light and energy control of the building.

The Layetana real estate, which saves annually 125,000 € and 600 tons of emissions of CO2, is a construction of 5,500 square meters in front of the new Fira de Barcelona in which it emphasizes the important role of the iron and the total absence of Interior pillars. But beyond the design, what makes this building characteristic is its functionality and the new way of conceiving the sustainability, which now represents a substantial savings. This was from the start with the advice of Ramon Folch, who introduced elements in the design that have managed to grant certification LEED, granted by the U.S. Green Building Council, the main international accreditation that guarantees the environmental quality of a building. To achieve certification LEED innovated in energy efficiency, achieving in this aspect a global savings of 53% (including 73% in consumption of water and 67% in lighting and air conditioning). Main concept and uses: The site selected for the Skyscraper is located right into the Mediterranean Sea, off the Barcelona Waterfront, creating a grand vertical visual icon at the end of the Diagonal avenue in Barcelona. It is erected on an artificial fill, a man-made peninsula, giving base to a composite complex of three intertwined towers, which are all entering a marine dominion, maybe representing utopia, yet not an impossible gesture to extend the city, using a vertical element in a metropolis (Barcelona), while simultaneously giving an end, which turns toward the sky, to this urban axe, fulfilling an old desired intention but in an unconventional manner. It intends to be a small vertical city facing the horizontal metropolis of Barcelona – in search of a skyline icon - and an alternative space solution for many physically-displaced people, victims of the present and rapid urbanism on the city Waterfront, in search of prime realestate and city marketing - recently represented in grand gestures, such as the construction of the enormous Forum of Cultures complex in 2004 - and to younger and older generations of economically-displaced ones, forced to leave the city because of exploding housing value, and in search of more financially accessible dwellings.
The Skin and the materials: We got inspired by deep-sea sponges, a deep beneath the sea complex glass structure, a marvel of natural engineering. We tried to apply our findings from this organism on a high-rise building, to create marine vertical structures, looking as garden towers, using a skin made of optical fibre and fibreglass, beyond a conventional steel and concrete structure. The three skyscrapers intend to be a new type of bioclimatic buildings, in total mimesis with natural organisms, inhabitants of the deep sea around them. The double skin is composed by two layers containing a third layer of suspended vegetation, becoming a new type of urban vertical agriculture. The outer skin structure will be made of fibreglass, same as used in sea ship construction, and other materials such as silica and optical fibre, with a steel core. The fibres that will comprise The Venus BCN skyscrapers’ skeleton is composed using a lattice, open criss-cross pattern, its reinforcement being made by fibres running diagonally in opposite directions, within alternate squares across the pattern. This construction technique will help counteracting shear stress, which can easily make a non-reinforced high-rise structure collapse.
