LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Summer has come and passed The innocent can never last Wake me up when September ends….. These amazing lyrics from Green Day’s masterpiece could perfectly illustrate how we salute this new season. The never-ending Summer has just left us with such good memories, peace and joy. Summer is a state of mind. Especially for us, the lucky ones who grew up close to the Ocean. ‘It’s Always Summer, Somewhere’, said Lily Pulitzer. Since our early beginnings, I wanted to create a season-less magazine, not being limited by fashion trends but using them instead in a more timeless manner. I hope you can enjoy this new issue, which wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous effort from our contributors, collaborators and team members. JOSE-MARIA JIMENEZ

I

would love to mention first and foremost, that we absolutely fell in love with your designs and admire your work. I would love to know, where did the inspiration to design begin?

Thank you so much, Sharon. The inspiration to design began at a very tender age. I used to go with my father to work on my off days. At the time, he owned a clothes manufacturing factory. As a young child, the factory was my playground and I used fabric and accessories to create my own toys. Over time, the passion to design took over in a very natural manner. You are now an incredible world-renown courtier, but we all start from somewhere. Can you share with us your journey to achieving what you have today?

You have recently released a Fall/Winter 2020/2021 Couture collection. What can you tell us about the inspiration behind this collection? The 2022 Collection combines two seasons in one. We usually present a Fall/Winter and a Spring/Summer collection. Due to lockdowns, most fashion weeks were cancelled, so we decided to finally present our collection despite of everything. The philosophy of the collection follows the sociological and behavioral changes that were felt all around the world. The global general vibe is a return to basics, with more emphasis on small details rather than extravagant ornaments. I would say that the collection is minimalistic, with a simple feminine silhouette, but always with a crazy structural element- pretty much like we all felt. The colors palette is a combination of fire colors such as red, orange and mango, with metallic colors such as silver and gold encrusted black.

“Most of my inspiration comes from nature and architecture.”

Given my upbringing, I had a strong technical background in manufacturing, so I was able to launch my atelier very quickly. It started off with a couple of loyal clients, who kept on coming back until I was able to open my flagship store in Beirut. But I did not feel it was enough, so I started to look beyond the borders of my country. In 2013 I started to participate in international shows around the world including Paris, New York, Milan, and Barcelona. I can happily say that my brand is now represented in more than 70 points of sale in 35 countries worldwide. What elements do you look up to that inspire you in your designs and overall collections?

The work of any artist does not turn on and off with a click of a switch. I, therefore, try to live my daily life in a colorful and meaningful way, drawing on my everyday experience to soak up as many emotions as I can. Sometimes, I get inspired by the most mundane of situations, other times I could be enjoying a serene environment. In general, most of my inspiration comes from nature and architecture.

59

Do you have any sneak peeks for your next collection to be released?

The new collection is going to be amazing, since it pushes the envelope in both substance and design. I can´t say much now, but I am treating it as a revolution of the human spirit against the hardships that we had to face. You are known for your gravity-defying cuts, modern architecture elements, and attention to detail in your designs. What new techniques should we expect to see in your newest collection? Those techniques are invariably present in all my work. I wish to develop them in a new format to capture the spirit of the new collection. I am also currently experimenting with new fabric. Once the outcome has matured enough, I will be able to realize many of the ideas floating in my mind now.

Do you have any future projects we should be excited about?

or even perhaps an armor. What is fashion to you?

What goal would you like to accomplish next in your designs?

The fashion industry is becoming a major supporter of world issues, with fashion’s enormous reach, there is still yet a lot to be accomplished in the world. What would you like to see accomplished in the fashion industry?

I have recently released a new prêt-à-porter line called OFFSET. It is a line addressing the modern woman, who wants to be distinguished, relaxed in her movements, and willing to be playful in her choice of wardrobe. As such the pieces are light, comfortable, with a special edgy flare.

My main designs were initially in the field of couture, and I felt that it only catered for a portion of society. The OFFSET collection is very dear to my heart, and I have developed it in the spirit to spread my designs to a wider public, and this is the main new goal I am focusing on now.

I consider fashion mainly as a form of self-expression, and everything else that you mentioned falls under subcategories. It is remarkably interesting to consider the development of fashion throughout history, to reach the status that it is in today: an expression of one’s character and state of mind.

We love your work! Do you have any plans on expanding your business here in the US?

I would like fashion to be more attainable to a large segment of the population. It should not be a dominion for the wealthy and the privileged. I commend the work of various artists like Giambattista, who collaborated with fashion houses to produce worldwide attainable fashion.

What new expansions do you have in the works globally?

Many aspiring designers feel stuck due to the pandemic and are struggling to find inspiration and to look ahead in having their work known. What advice do you have for designers who are just beginning now?

The US is one of our main markets, and we are represented in many retail stores, through our distributor in Los Angeles, MNM Couture.

Before the advent of the Coronavirus, I had a clear plan to expand in the East, mainly in China and India. I have worked closely with many PR agencies both in China and India to push brand visibility.I was able to dress many celebrities for Red Carpet events, and the dresses received a lot of acclaims. Now that the pandemic is almost over, we have great expectations for the future. Fashion is not just fashion. Fashion can be someone’s form of expression, an escape, an art form

Certainly, the pandemic will affect the behavior of humanity for many years to come. Depending on which fashion branch they are involved in, aspiring designers need to consider the behavioral changes in our society while planning their future. From my point of view, I think that many of the events next year will be held outdoors rather than indoors, and I have considered this fact while designing my new collection.

“My main designs were initially in the field of couture, and I felt that it only catered for a portion of society.”

How have you adapted as a designer to this new “normal” since the pandemic?

Fashion has become very dynamic in the last few years, mainly because of social media and online demand. I learned as a designer, that I needed to adapt fast to a rapidly changing consumer behavior and preference. The coronavirus changed the game in all aspects, and though the initial shock was difficult to absorb, I was able to change my methodology. Of course, the hardest part was getting in the mood for creating art, at a time where the lives of hundreds of thousands were affected every day. You are a designer that loves to give back. What philanthropic project are you passionate about right now? On the 4th of August, 2020, a large explosion in the Beirut Port devasted the city. Thousands were dead or injured, and tens of thousands had their homes completely or partially destroyed. As an individual, I tried to help out – along with my family- those who were in need the most.

As a brand, we dedicated part of our production team to produce curtains to provide a temporary shell for damaged homes. And finally, a designer can be a major voice and representative for important issues as the fashion industry has increasingly become a philanthropic megaphone for many such as Sustainability, Black Lives Matter, Artist Protection, Small Business Support, and so much more. What is your voice as a designer?

In my part of the world, equality between different groups in society has not been attained yet. As an individual, and through my work, I live by and try to spread the concept of equality, for the emancipation of the human spirit. I hope one day the world could become a better place, with no distinction between race, gender, political affiliation, …

“As an individual, and through my work, I live by and try to spread the concept of equality, for the emancipation of the human spirit.”

W

hat was it like starting your modeling careers as teenagers?

It was a shock to say the least, Like any young teenager finding themselves and wanting independence we searched for a part-time job and finally got hired at a pizza shop together, not getting paid much at all but still happy working there and actually got a bunch of our friends hired. Until one day when we were around 15 I think, and miraculously got discovered by a big retail brand in Sydney. It was so exciting to us because we finally felt independent like we were working toward something else rather than just aimlessly conforming to schooling and what society deems conventional. We would go to Sydney every week for work and ended up on a contract with them making more money than we ever expected. We were insanely grateful, even though it did interfere with our schooling lives, we still managed to study and get really good grades, we never took our focus off school regardless of the new path we felt we were starting to create for ourselves. We were really shy teenagers and modeling was something that scared us but simultaneously brought us out of our shells and gave us the confidence we needed even for everyday life. It was such a positive experience for us and we ended up signing with IMG when we were 15 and our modeling career took off after that. Once we graduated we felt inspired to travel the world live out of a suitcase, and we did that until we were 19, modeling and growing our career every place we went.

obsessed with fit and style-wise. When we were about 17 we thought why don’t we just make our own? And all our friends and girls that follow us would love them too! It started just as an idea and eventuated into a serious goal so we took the time to make sure we found a team who saw our vision and agreed to try to be as sustainable as possible, because again, Australia is our home, but also home to the biggest reef system in the world, which is dying more and more each day, and we decided we would do our best to not contribute to that by making our bikinis fully sustainable. Where do you draw inspiration from when designing Jumelle Swim?

We draw inspiration from a lot of different things. The first collection was inspired by our love for travel and the ocean and what colors would enhance a tropical vacay. This new collection actually has some of our first-ever sketches and color scheme ideas. We drew most of our inspiration from old movies and vintage fashion. The desire to wear something that didn’t necessarily feel like it was made in 2021 but rather something you found in a vintage store, although every vintage store we go into there’s never bikinis that fit us even remotely well. So we made sure not only did it have a vintage feel but it still fit in a flattering minimalistic way, unlike vintage bikinis would. This collection, therefore, is essentially bikinis with a modern fit but a vintage design.

“Jumelle means “twins” in French. It’s simple but it’s us. French twins.”

Why did you want to start Jumelle Swim? Jumelle is something we have been dreaming about forever. Ever since we saw the Veronicas´ doing their clothing line in Target when we were 10 and were adamant we too would be rockstar twins and have our own brand. But seriously, starting a bikini line actually just stemmed from our lifestyle, from growing up in the hot Australian sun and how much it required wearing a bikini, we would match with every bikini we could and we loved wearing unique designs but we never actually felt like we had anything we were 85

Does modeling your own collection help you feel more connected to the brand? Ironically we never actually imagined ourselves modeling our own bikinis, we just imagined we would be the people behind the screens not on them (also ironically). But once we had made the first designs and we got all of the pieces in our size to perfectly fit our bodies, and each design matched with another (we call it “twinning”) we realized we would be perfect as the models, not only did we suit the designs but it was our brand, we should be modeling our first collection! Modeling Jumelle definitely makes us feel closer to the brand in a weird way and I think it also makes our audience feel more connected to the brand because they already feel so familiar with us.

QP

What makes Jumelle unique or special? We think Jumelle stands out because it’s a brand with a lot of passion. Everything we do isn’t just to make money, everything we make we put straight back into the brand. The name itself is already so special to us. Jumelle means “twins” in French. It’s simple but it’s us. French twins. The name is the inspiration for all our collections. We make sure every piece can match with another bikini in that collection, so you can match with your friends or sister. What’s really unique about Jumelle is the designs, we have sketched every design ourselves making sure not only is it not just a basic bikini, but it’s flattering, and it’s stylish! Although all these things make Jumelle what it is visually, the most important thing to us about the brand is giving back and making sure we set examples for other brands to also maintain ethical and sustainable practices. Our first question to ourselves was - who would we give back to?! Then we got excited, we realized we had the perfect charity. When we were traveling the world with a charity organization we spent some time in Cairns, located in the Great Barrier Reef, and visited an organization called Reef Restoration Foundation. They told us their story and how they were just two guys wanting to save the reef and decided to devote their time to growing and planting as many corals back into the reef as possible. They were only a small team but had all the passion and devotion required to grow just not the adequate funding. We were so touched and grateful for what they were doing. So a year or two later when we were searching for a charity that aligns with us, we realized we had the perfect one that we have already seen works so hard to help the reef, especially one so close to home and our hearts. We only give a small percentage of sales so far but we hope to give more as our brand grows! What is your favorite style in this collection? Wow! Even writing this right now is getting us so excited for everyone to see these designs! We made sure we did a variety of designs so everyone can have their own favorite that suits them best. We have to admit our favorite is the “La Piscine” bikini (if you haven’t already noticed we name all our bikinis after movies we love ....hahahaha) it’s the perfect modern vintage bikini. And finally, a bikini that makes the bust look flattering without squishing it down! We are obsessed.

How would both of you describe your style?

We both love fashion so much and curate most of our outfits from vintage or thrift shop finds, however, our styles are still quite different. Elisha is super chic and specific and OCD while also keeping it fun and Renee loves to color coordinate - or not and just have fun with anything, no planning needed, I (Renee) love to always change it up and just always want to make it interesting and feel expressive through what mood I’m in or phase of life I’m in. Through your careers, you’ve both been able to travel a lot. What are some of your favorite places that you’ve been to? Contrary to every question we have answered, this one feels easy for us to narrow it down to Italy. Our dream location for a Jumelle shoot one day. (We already have these designs in mind!!) We were meant to go to Italy this year to shoot our Jumelle campaign but sadly it fell through because of all the Covid-19 restrictions.

What is WFPB? Whole Food Plant-Based is plant-forward eating that focuses on foods primarily from whole plants. It consists of a plant-rich diet mostly or entirely of plant-based foods. Plant-based foods are foods derived from plants with no animal-source or artificial ingredients. The Plant-Based Diet can either limit animal products or avoid them entirely. It is not necessarily a vegan diet or vegan lifestyle. Plant-based lifestyle incorporates mindfulness around ethical, sustainable, and cruelty-free products in day-to-day life. In the fashion industry, we have seen designers and retailers end the sale of animal furs and focus on the use of vegan leather and more sustainable plant-based fabrics. The number of cruelty-free designers like Stella McCartney, Vaute Couture, Cri de Couer, Matt & Nat, OlsenHaus, John Bartlett, and LaBante London continues to increase.
