Rules In the active voice, the subject is active: it does something. In the passive voice, the subject is passive,: something happens to it. We form passives with a form of be + part participle. Active DJs imitated his style. Passive His style was imitated (by DJs) Ex.2 page 50 The British charts were started in 1952. The top twelve records were listed by a magazine called New Musical Express. One of the magazine’s managers phoned twenty record shops every week to find the information. The charts were popular and they were copied by other magazines. These days the official are prepared by a specialist company. More than 5.000 shops are connected to a computer and the information is processed every week. Apart from the general charts, there are also charts for hip hop, indie, country, and other types of music. In the future, more Internet shops will be connected to the charts system, as people buy more music online. Ex.3 page 50 1. They wrote the song for a charity. The song was written for a charity. 2. A lot of stars sang the song. The song was sung by a lot of stars. 3. Now, people often write songs for good causes. Now, songs are often written for good causes. 4. Very few people listened to discs at home until a cheap machine called a “gramophone” was produced. In 1902, an opera singer called Enrico Caruso recorded the first million-selling record. He was paid 100€ for ten songs. These days, pop stars can make big money and they are managed by professionals. The industry awards a gold disc to an artist if 500.000 copies of a song or album are sold. A platinum disc is awarded for sales of one million, and a diamond award is given for ten million sales.

Records and cassettes started to disappear from shops when CDs were invented in 1982. In the near future, normal CDs will be replaced by DVD-A (DVD audio). Sometimes a song is banned by radio or TV stations if they think that the lyrics are offensive. More and more songs are bought online, and approximately twenty billion songs are downloaded illegally from the internet every year. Some songs are released online before they’re released CD. Songs are advertised with videos on websites like MySpace and YouTube. Now digital music players like the iPod are very common. Also, in the future, mobile phones will be used more to download an play music.
