Curriculum Vitae

Joseph Mathew Aerathu mobile : (+91) 97736 65699 email : joseph.aer99@gmail.com

I’m a 22 year old architecture student from the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi, currently in my 4th year 7th Semester, interested in singing, reading, designing, visualizing, and acquiring new skills (and space exploration!). I was born and brought up in Kuwait, and moved to India for college, where I’ve had the opportunity to learn under highly qualified and knowledgable architects. I explore flexibility, experimentation, and parametricism when I approach a project. Exploring these fields may be the next step in pushing the limits of architecture. I strive to make my mark in the world and seek to gain the knowledge and skills required to design and construct sustainable and optimized spaces, and look forward to applying my computational architecture skills to engage in projects that push conventions. @vizexp https://www.instagram.com/vizexp/

Tangle Studio Project [Individual; 4th Semester]

Lying in an 84,000 sqm site, the brief was to re-imagine the architecture of Chandigarh for present times. The aim was to develop newer ways of construction and representation. The result was this special urban space which achieves a modern look whilst having its roots in the work of Corbusier, providing new spaces for knowledge, exchange, consumption, and appreciation, placed around distinct courtyards, which become spaces of rejuvenation. The design explores a new way of urban life with an iconic and distinct design language, standing apart from among the Corbusearean masses.

Typology: Urban Plaza Location: Sector-17, Chandigarh, India

Portfolio 2021

P 07

The city of Chandigarh is famous for splendid architectural forms, most of them designed by Le Corbusier. Sector-17 is regarded as the heart of Chandigarh, the commercial and retail hub of the City. The plaza in the centre of the sector is a major urban exchange which presented an opportunity to provide a spatial experience that breaks free from the rigid skyline and monotonous character of the context, to offer a breathe of fresh air.

Leisure Harbor

Leisure Harbor Young Architects Competitions [Team of 2; 5th Semester]

The design was derived from the existing silhouette of the harbour to resemble a ship. This was extended along the bridge, and terminated with a deck to provide pristine views to the sea, thus activating the entire spine with programs, and distributing activities evenly. Simultaneously, the beach has been reimagined with a diverse array of functions, alongside a promenade, to arouse the liveliness of the harbour. The marina is thus transformed into a vibrant epicenter for cultural and social exchange. Typology: Harbor Location: Marina di Loano, Liguria, Italy

Portfolio 2021

P 17

The Marina di Loano is a modern tourist harbor situated in Liguria, Italy, providing numerous opportunities to experience the magical atmosphere of the sea. It is easy to reach and welcomes visitors with its mild climate throughout the year. This brief was to define the future of harbors by redesigning one of the 10 most important marinas of Europe.

Institute of Design

Institute of Design Reclaiming Modernity, UNI Competitions [Team of 2; 4th Semester]

The design tries to balance traditional and contemporary architecture, and provide that much needed equilibrium in today’s context, work-life balance, stress relief, or just a healthier, more centred society. Traditional modernist architecture is reintroduced for a much more engaging user group, allowing for flexibilty of spaces, thereby have a direct impact on the process of learning and design.

Typology: Educational Location: Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka

Portfolio 2021

P 25

Tropical Modernism is an architectural style that has gained traction with the increase in environmental consciousness. It mediates between contextual, traditional, passive sustainability, modern construction technology, as well as the international and vernacular. These principles and frameworks have been scaled to accommodate the modern typology of an Institute of Learning and Design, to host about 250 students at immediate expanse.

Winter Pavilion

Winter Pavilion SWITCH Competitions [Team of 2; 4th Semester]

The brief of Winter Pavilion was to create a multi-usage pavilion in the emblematic Hyde Park that can connect people, nature and architecture. The pavilion celebrates and captures the essence of the winter landscape by hosting different activities that invigorate the zone. With its privileged location, the objective of the pavilion is to become a cultural and leisure point of the city, a space that is integrated in the natural environment of the park and that is flexible enough to adapt to and promote a wide variety of fun winter activities. The pavilion lets people be one with nature and absorb the natural winter landscape through the artificial volume.

Typology: Urban Pavilion Location: Hyde Park, London, UK

Portfolio 2021

P 33

London has had one of the biggest global influence on the sociocultural landscape of the world. It’s a city that never stops or sleeps. London winters are a magical sight with the frozen Thames, snow capped monuments, decorated streetscapes filled with people and a fuzzy feeling around the city. Hyde Park is one of the largest parks in London, and one of the nine Royal Parks in the city.

The Winter Pavilion is located along the Serpentine Lake, meandering and essentially stitching together both sides of the lake, weaving a new social fabric into Hyde Park. Circulation and transition have been emphasized. Culture, leisure, and nature are designed as concentric elements of the community, facilitating activities that engage people, introducing three distinct nodes in the new social hub. Joseph

Chakra Home

Chakra Home

HOME: Design Your Dream, Archasm Competitions [Team of 2; 4th Semester]

The Chakra Home is a dream for families living in this ever so fast, chaotic world. Humans need to slow down and escape from this world from time to time. We offer a space for mental, physical, and emotional rejuvenation, all within the comfort of a home, designed considering the chakra flow of the human body. Like us, our home also has its chakras, brought out through materiality, form, and design considerations. The function of every space is in accordance with the meaning and characteristics of the 7 chakras, via the theory of Brain Wave Stimulation.

Typology: Residential Location: Tianzi Mountains, China

Portfolio 2021

P 39

The brief was to manifest into reality the idea of our dreams, and create a house based on it. The design is a pure and highly imaginative expression of a home with a degree of surrealism to it. There were no restrictions on the type, size, & setting of the house. We have proposed a multifamily house with a spiritual narrative. The location chosen is the magical Tianzi Mountains in China.

International School Solar Decathlon India; First Runner Up (Educational Division) [Team of 10; 6th Semester]

The design was developed in detail in the aspects of Design, Energy, Water, Comfort & Environmental Quality, Engineering Design & Operation, Resilience, Affordability, Scalability & Market Potential, and Innovation, resulting in a 5-Star GRIHA rating compliant, net-positive energy school that conforms to the International Baccalaureate curriculum standards.

Typology: Educational Location: Sector-134, Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India

Portfolio 2021

P 45

The Solar Decathlon India is an annual net-zero-energy-water building design contest, for which we proposed an IB school that would be relevant in the current times, and provide a centre of learning and creativity for the society, that would inspire and inculcate a sense of creativity between it’s students. The site, occupying an area of 15,256 sqm rests within an upcoming industrial and commercial neighbourhood of Noida. Its close proximity to Greater Noida expressway, ensures good connectivity with users.
