INTRODUCTION ‘Print Me Pretty’ is going to be the theme of 2012’s womenswear garments. Fabric prints come back around every year in a wide selection of colours and styles, but 2012 is looking promising for the fabric print idea to take off. With four key trends selected, there is something for everyone, from the most subtle and romantic looks too bright and bold loud prints. LAYER UP This trend looks at print morphing - merging two contrasting prints together to get a mixed look - imagine dip dyeing with patterns instead of block colours. FLORA & FAURNA Think into the wild of 2010 with a natural British kick. This trend’s focus point is wild British nature. Think badgers, foxes and little tweeting birds. FADED ROSE We have all seen the bright floral prints repeat themselves year after year, but this trend is the aftermath. Faded Rose looks at the neutral rose colours such as peach and cream in a beautiful romantic way, but don’t forget the power of the woman and expect to see some structured garments sporting this print. IT’S HISTORY Take your imagination back in time to the Victorians and remember all those beautiful forgotten prints. This trend looks at how French toile and baroque prints are going to make a break into garments and be the next big look for the colder months of 2012.

This trend reflects British nature and wildlife and brings the freedom of the countryside onto clothes. Neutral colours will support this look, with animal prints in all shapes and sizes littering the garments. Animal patterns and prints are a re-occurring trend, but this time look to the future of the outdoors and rural countryside. Nature will come together with fashion to create beautiful frenzy of the outdoors with subtle a hint of country lifestyle. This look will be popular for the winter months where it can be layered up with textured knits and black and white fabrics.
KEY EXAMPLES Mulberry are showing signs of this trend in their latest collection with their beautiful bird prints over a beige fabric. The wild garden birds are brightly coloured in giving the fabric a quirky edge.
This is an example of what can be expected for 2012, graphic images of Britsh wild animals printed on to a range of fabrics and colours. This example of a badger jumper is very minimal but is exactly what the trend is about .
INFLUENCES
This fabric print trend is influenced by wild British nature. Looking at collections from last year where the idea was first introduced shows how this trend originated and then developed; moving away from fur and rustic materials to prints of the animals which influenced the trend. Flora and Fauna means the plants and animals found in a specific area- this being the British Isles for this particular trend. The country side and the great outdoors all help to build up this look, with prints of the animals plastered across the garments.
KEY COLOURS The main colours in this trend are autumn neutrals, golden browns, deep greens and a few pheasant yellows to brighten the fabric. But many prints will be black and white. Sub-colours are more subtle tones of greens and browns, and the occasional deep mauve. The will be few bright and bold colours in the trend, as it’s all about nature and natural colours and prints so all colours will represent the British Wildlife theme. The key colours in the trend reflect those of the animals influencing it and appearing on the fabrics. The colours also link to the habitats in which the nature featured is found, such as forests, hedgerows and fields.

Florals always come back around in fashion in all different shapes and sizes- but 2012 is going to have a new front to the floral fabric patternsmoving away from bright colours to deeper more subtle patterns. You can expect to see fabrics covered with huge rustic roses, in deep creams and browns. Some prints will be in black and white; with various faded effects on the garments as if the roses are gradually disappearing. A designer to look at for inspiration is Lanvin – beautiful and feminine some of his pieces for the following winter demonstrate this trend perfectly.
KEY EXAMPLES
This dress by Lanvin is a beautiful example, the slightly distorted images of the roses in the light brown/beige colour compliment the black base colour of the dress well. The all over print features the same image of the rose just at a different angles, it is really effective and a bold statement to make on such an elegant dress.
This is an example of how the trend will filter own into high street stores. The idea of a huge canvas painting being displayed across a t-shirt is a popular look for this trend. This demonstrates how the trend will be popular within the younger audience, and it can be simplified for all garments. The vintage inspired painted images will have a beautiful and delicate look to them, and create romantic yet brave garments.
INFLUENCES
This trend is strongly influenced by ooking back in tim to the delicate life paintings of artists 100’2 of years ago. The victorians were passionate for gardening and roses, so look for old pictures from that eara to inspire you. Nick Knights Flora photography is aso a key inspiration, the close up pictures of roses and other flowers shows the lovely deep pinks and peaches of the flowers, and how fine the leaves are.
KEY COLOURS Black and white are going to be popular in this trend, as greys and other subtle colours such as creams and browns will be gradually introduced later on. The warm tones have a definite autumn feel to them, complimenting the Flora and Fauna trend well. The flowers will all be of an artistic style, so the colours will compliment this in natural shades. Some vibrant reds and oranges will appear, and park peaches as the roses are just past bloom. These will be complimented with darker neutral colours to tone down the bright shades. Creams will be good background colours for the fabrics, and will add a PANTONE 411C summery hint to the garments.

IT’S HISTORY DELICATE, LACE, HOSTORIC, TOILE DE JOUR, FRENCH STYLE, BAROQUE PRINTS, BEAUTIFUL, UNIQUE, DETAILED, TIMELINE, DARK ROMANCE, AUTUMN, WINTER, FAIRY TALE, IMAGINATIVE, CREAM, BLACK, BLUE.
‘It’s History’ looks at historic fabric prints and styles modernised to fit into contemporary fabric designs for 2012. Traditional textiles such as lace will be seen in a printed version. Temporally London has used this idea in their most recent collection, in which garments were outlined with a printed lace trim. Other prints such as Baroque and Toile de Jour will be used on garments to bring back a historic romantic feel. Dark colours will be used - so this look will be seen more in the early months of 2012. There will be a lot of black and creams, both colours used a lot in past centuries.
KEY EXAMPLES This is an example of how the Toile de Jour fabric will be used in 2012. The beautiful traditional French fabric is set to make a comeback - it got increasingly popular in 2000 for upholstery, and will now make its way into the fashion market.
The colours may change a little to fit in with the trends but the general print will stay the same. It will be popular on structured garments such as skirts and summer

The dress has inspirational lace and baroque patterns together to create a unique delicate looking garment. The historic prints have been used well to make a modern and fashionable piece. The colours are very dark and subtle but work well with the historic aspect of the trend and compliment the prints well.
INFLUENCES
This trend is history. Such fluences, and colours helps
influenced by patterns and clothing in patterns as Baroque are the strongest inlooking at how they were used and what to create this trend.
Lace is a big influence for the trend, it will be modernised by have the pattern printed onto fabric instead of it being the actual textile itself. Looking at garments and fashion from the Victorian times will help the understanding of this trend, and taking ideas of how the garments are structured to show off the patterns will be good inspiration for designers using these prints.
KEY COLOURS The base colours of this trend are very neutral, with different shades of grey and green. The top colours are a lot brighter and compliment the plainer ones, warm pinks and terracotta’s work well with the pale shades. Creams will go with the dark greys and blacks to create a romantic historic theme to the fabric. Warm reds and oranges compliment the trend well for the historic look as these colours were very popular with upholstery in the Victorian times, and were used with the baroque and toile de jour prints. Sky blue and cream is the traditional colour for toile de jour, and this will stay in the trend but the print PANTONE COOL will also come in modern bright GREY 7C colours.
