Voltage-gated sodium channels become blocked in milliseconds like cell doors slamming shut with the prisoners on the wrong side. I exit the bathroom stall. Strolling through the gallery I absorb the various neocarnal interpretations via psychoacoustics and canvas. I think everyone is under the impression that we are about to enter some futuristic dystopian era. Pushing so hard towards something that we don’t really understand. All striving for these perfect angular versions of ourselves. We don’t really know what we want, we don’t want to

work for it, but that’s okay, the static from the box lights the way. I return to our table to find Giselle lamenting the matinee we just attended, and Eric waiting for his turn to talk. Compliments from her are rare. The combined mass of the shoulder pads in her pink blazer would likely outweigh that of her brain. “Anyway, it did serve as a sufficient reprieve from thoughts of your sister,” she eventually finishes. Eric’s turn, though he and I both seem surprised that she ended with the topic that he wanted to begin. Pure coincidence. “I still don’t understand it. They kept saying something about ‘insuffration’ or ‘insoofration’, I don’t–” “Insufflation,” I offer. The wave of a hand is the only response I receive. “Where do think she even got it from in the first place? I mean, it’s not like she was the type to–” “Does it really matter?” I ask, rhetorically. “I suppose not.” They don’t know that it is worse than that. So much worse. Probably for the best. There was a brief period of time when I experienced paranoia, but these two can barely decide what to do with mummy and daddy’s money. I feel safe. Despite my direct involvement.

Beware of the Catfish Words by John Warwick

Catfishing (v.): the act of utilising a false identity through social media and internet platforms to deceive another person into emotional and/or romantic relationships. For example: twentysomething Jackson fell in love with twentysomething Andrea through online dating. He later found out that “Andrea” was Andrew, a 42-year-old man. Jackson probably shouldn’t have sent “Andrea/Andrew” his nudes. Catfishing is something that seems to frequently occur as our culture is submerged into developing and maintaining online relationships. It’s not just low self-esteem singles that are completely falling for these artificial identities; even celebrities and your average person can be lured in. The concept of catfishing is something we’re quite familiar with. Russian brides and Nigerian princes trying to tempt you with love and money are some of the pioneers of catfishing. Most
catfish now are likely to prey on the vulnerable singles that have turned to online dating in a desperate bid to avoid being forever alone. What does the catfish get in return? Nudes? Love? Satisfaction? The possibilities are endless. Though we’re very aware of false online identities, the term “catfish” has only been recently introduced into mainstream conversation. In the 2010 American documentary, Catfish, the film’s protagonist, Yaniv “Nev” Schulman, fell in love with a beautiful, young woman named Megan through Facebook. Megan turned out to be a false alter ego created by a middle-aged wife and mother. Due to the critical success of the documentary, the directors have created a reality series on MTV that investigates whether these online relationships are real or if they’ve been catfished. Schulman coined the term “catfishing” after hearing a story from his personal catfish’s husband, who used to be a
