“A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control.” - Bible, proverbs: 29:11 4
OUR BELOVED FOUNDER
Rev. Fr. Peter Mermier (1790 -1862) Rev. Fr. Peter Mermier was born on 28th August 1790, at Savoy in France. His father was Francois Mermier and Mother Antoniette Bastion. He grew up as a child dedicated and hard working, endowed with a calm character, alert mind, bright intelligence and genuine piety. He did excellently well in his studies. He was a model and inspiration to the rest of the students. As a boy he manifested his desire to become a priest to serve the people. He was ordained priest on 21st March 1813. He was then only Twenty two and a half years old. Then he worked as a teacher at Melan where he formulated his own philosophy of education. He founded the congregation of Sisters of the Cross of Chavanod for the education of poor peasant girls. He initiated the educational apostolate of the missionaries by undertaking the management of secondary schools of Melan and Evian in France. Leaving behind a heritage of dazzling holiness, heroic courage and faith, Fr. Mermier breathed his last on 30th September, 1862. Fr. Mermier firmly believed that education is a work of love and that it is incomplete without religious formation. He envisaged an educational programme marked by respect for children. He advised his teacher confreres to love their pupils, to be a mother to them by their tenderness and a father by their prudence. “True education”, according to him, “is opening the heart rather than mind”. He expected from the pupils three things: knowledge, wisdom and discipline. 5

LORD I COME TO YOUR GARDEN Ch: Lord I come to your garden, To see what grows there today Lord I come to your garden, To love, to work and to pray. Habits of Highly Successful People
1. BE PROACTIVE Highly effective persons make decision to improve their lives through influencing things around them rather than simply reacting to external force. When faced with a problem, they take initiative to find solutions rather than just reporting the problem and waiting for others to solve for therm. As not all things are within your control, you need to identify those you could exert 2. BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND Cultivation of the habit to create a clear vision, direction and destination to help in attaining your goal. Your personal mission statement or philosophy should guide your daily activities towards attaining your goal. 3. PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST The habit of personal management. By taking full control and staying disciplined, you might still focus on the wrong task, e.g. the most important stuff but not the most urgent. in today’s world where there is an ever -increasing commitment and obligation, this habit helps you to prioritize your activities and eliminate those that are urgent but not as important, using your mission statement as a guide. 4. THINK WIN- WIN This is the habit of Interpersonal Leadership. You must think winwin, as one person’s success does not necessarily require another’s failure. You should try to seek solutions that are mutually beneficial to you and the other party. Establishing a win-win agreement helps to create foundation for an effective, long - term relationship. There are six Paradigms of Human Interaction, namely Win/Win, Lose/ Lose, Win/Lose, Lose/Win, and Win/Win or No Deal. When creating a win -win situation is impossible, one must also learn to accept that the best alternative is not making any deal. 21
5. SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD
This is the habit of communication, which is also the mos important principal of interpersonal relation. There are 5 level of listening, i.e. ignoring, pretending, selective listening attentive listening and empathic listening, which is also th highest form of listening. It contributes to effective communication as it lets you get inside other persons frame of reference and see the world the way they do. As you learn to listen deeply to other people, you will discover tremendous differences in perception. 6. SYNERGIZE The habit of creative cooperation. Synergy refers to a situation where 1+1=2 but 1+1=3 or more; it is a belief that the who is greater than the sum of its parts. To achieve this habit, one has to value differences among people and try to build creative solutions/ideas through interactions. Interaction helps 1 leverage on individual differences to find a creative way out of conflict situations. 7. SHARPEN YOUR SAW The last habit encompasses all the other habits and ensure our engagement in activities of personal renewal. You will ii able to preserve and maintain yourself through seeking balance in the areas of physical, social/emotional, mental and spiritual. Production refers to the production of desired rest and production capability refers to the ability to product successful results. Striking a balance between P and PC n only helps to avoid negative result like burnout or wastage but also avoids bad decision-making that reduces your production capability, as when one attempts to maximum immediate production with no regard to the product capability, the capability might be lost in the process.

STUDENT DISCIPLINE Character formation is one of the important objectives of education. An important aspect of character formation is self-discipline which gives a person mastery over oneself. A human person should have to master his/ her passions and emotion; he/she should be able to control his/her emotions whether it is anger, hatred, violence or allurements of sensuality. A person can obtain self mastery only through gradual process of self-discipline. By self-discipline one becomes a real human person. The rules of discipline in the school are in view of the self-discipline of each student and to educate the students in good behavior. Discipline is also necessary for the effective running of the Institution. It is important that parents co-operate with the Management for the effective implementation of the disciplinary rules of the educational institution. A disciplined child is a great asset for the family. Discipline 1. The following are some of the important and indispensable disciplinary rules for the students of our educational institutions: 2. As a rule, the following steps are taken to discipline the students: 1. For minor violation of any rule, the class teacher corrects the students. If a student or a group of students repeat the same mistake or commit a serious offence, they will be sent to the principal/ Headmaster, who will correct them sternly. 2. In the absence of the class-teacher and the principal, any teacher of the school is entitled to correct. 3. If a student commits a serious offence or if he/she repeatedly breaks the rules of the school, the Headmaster/Principal will call the parents/ guardian of the student to his office and explain to them the matter and in their presence Warn the student not to repeat the offence. 36
4. If a student, even after repeated warning does not reform himself, he may be expelled, (c.f. A.P.E.R. No. sub-rule,6). the measure for Expulsion is taken only in the case of very grave offences, where there is no reasonable prospect of change and moral reformation of the student and where the retention of such a student would be injurious to the moral of other students or undermine the discipline and reputation of the Institution. Before expelling a student from school, he should be given an opportunity to present his explanation.
Co-curricular Activities Participation in sports & games, both Indoor & outdoor as well as other co-curricular and extra-curricular activities like debates, quiz elocution and other activities is part of the school curriculum, As such every child has to take keen interest in them and try to excel in all activities. Parents are requested to look into the school Diary of their child and see that the lessons and home works assigned for the next day are done. See that your child devotes 2-4 hours {according to their class) to self-study, to their lessons and do their home assignments. 2. Remark recorded in the School dairy should be seen and countersigned regularly. The students should be encouraged to cultivate and habituate neatness, punctuality, regularity and discipline. Criticism of your child’s teacher or hislher school in the presence of the child should be scrupulously avoided, because it cause the students to lose respect for his/her teacher, with the consequent failure to learn from him / her. Should you have a legitimate complaint see the principal, without the fear of reprisal. Parents must leave their children at the gate. They should not enter the school premises with their children. Parents should not visit the classrooms during class hours to see students or interview the teachers during school hours. They meet the teachers on second Saturday of each month. Effective Habits for Effective Study “Study is like the heavens “glorious sun” 40
Success in your studies! Do you want? It Is no big deal. You can prepare yourself to succeed in your studies. Try to develop and appreciate the following habits. • Take responsibility for yourself Responsibility is recognition that in order to succeed you can make decisions about your priorities, your time, and your resources • Center yourself around your values and principles Don’t let friends and acquaintances dictate what you consider important • Put first things first Follow up on the priorities you have set for yourself, and don’t let others or other interests, distract you from your goals. • Discover your key productivity periods and places Morning, afternoon, evening; study spaces where you can be the most focused and productive. Prioritize these for your most difficult study challenges • Consider yourself in win-win situation You win by doing your best and contributing your best doing contributing to a class, whether for yourself, your fellow students, and even for your teachers and instructors. If you are content with your performance, a grade becomes an external check on your performance, which may not coincide with your internally arrived at benefits • First understand others, then attempt to be understood When you have an issue with an instructor for example a ques-tionable grade, an assignment deadline extension, put yourself in the instructor’s place. Now ask yourself how you can best make your argument given his/ her situation • Look for better solutions to problems For example, if you don’t understand the course material, don’t just reread the material. Try something else! Consuit with the professor, a tutor, an academic advisor, a classmate, a study group, or your school’s study skills center. • Look to continually challenge yourself Partially adapted from the audio cassette by Steven Covey. 41
READING : A METHOD Reading is critical to success in school, whatever point in your education you are at, there are better and worse ways to do it. Here are a few tips on how to feed better, retain more and save yourself study time later. 1. Read with a purpose: Beyond “the teacher said so” there is always a reason why you are reading something. Are you reading it to understand an argument? Learn facts? Background material? Whatever the reason you were assigned that piece of reading, focus on it as you read. If you aren’t clear on what you are trying to get out of the material, ask the teacher before you read. Write the purpose at the top of a piece of paper and have it right there. 2. Read with paper and pen: As you read, take notes. Keep looking at your purpose and write to answer the question or support what you are doing. If done well you will be able to get everything you need to study for an exam from your notes. (I do advise doing this by hand, since the act of writing often helps people remember things while the act of typing isn’t wired In the same way. However if you prefer to do this electronically, go ahead.) 3. Notes should be brief: You are not rewriting the piece. Think in terms of built points out lines. Short sentences, indentations, and lists will help you in remember what you read and make sense of it later. 4. Leave white apace around your notes: When you go to class you are going to take these notes with you and use the discussion in class to fill in any blanks. Because of that you want to have space to add things, draw connections that you may not have made before, and clarify things. Remember, the goal is to not have to go back to the base reading later, so these notes should be good. Beyond this, reading more productively depends on what you are reading. Here are a few examples of common things you might be reading and how to handle History - Generally you are trying to understand what happened and why it happened. Therefore you should start by building a time line of the reading (either across the top of the page 42
or down one side if you need more space). For this I suggest dividing your notes into two parts: One that deals with the story itself, the characters (who they were and just a brief sentence about their primary motivations), the time and place of the story and perhaps a bit of information about the author The second part should deal with themes and techniques: Is this a love story? War story? Is there a theme of family? Responsibility? Greed? These are the things you will end up writing about on a test, with the items in part one supporting your analysis. Thinking about it as you read will help later. 5. Social Sciences : What is the argument that the author is trying to make? What are their main points? How do they structure their argument? Do they address all the questions you had as you read the article? What other questions would you ask? 6. Math : Here you want to focus on pulling out vocabulary and key formula’s that will be used. Annotating an example (by writing the example down and then making your own arrows and notes to explain each part of the process) can help you study later. Science: Background information, key new terms and items, and the properties of different things being studied should be captured. If there is a life cycle being presented then create all time line that shows all of the stages. There are lots of other types of reading, but this should give you a good idea of how to start. Those who survive the tough times are the future winners. TAKING NOTES IN THE CLASS In classes, your teachers will talk about topics that you are studying. The information they provide will be important for you to know when you take tests. You must be able to take good written notes from what your teachers say. Taking good notes is a three-stage process in which there are certain things you should do before class, during class, and after class. Here are the three stages of note taking and what you should do during each stage. 43
1. Get Ready to Take Notes (Before Class) Review your notes from the previous class session before you come to class. This will help you remember what was covered and get you ready to understand new information your teacher provides. Complete all assigned readings before you come to class. Your teacher will expect that you have done this and will use and build upon this information. Bring all note taking materials with you to class. Have several pens and pencils as well as your notebook. 2. Take Notes (During Class) Keep your attention focused on what your teacher is saying. Listen for’’signal statements” that tell you that what your teacher is about to say is important to write in your notes. Examples of signal statements are “The most important point. “and “Remember that... “Be sure to include in your notes information that your teacher repeats or writes on the chalkboard. Write quickly so that you can include all the important information in your notes. Do this by writing abbreviated words such as med for medicine, using symbols such as % for percent, and writing short sentences. Place a? Next to information you write in your notes, but about whose meaning you are sure. 3. Re-write your notes (After Class) Rewrite your notes to make them more complete by changing abbreviated words into whole words, symbols into words, and shortened sentences into longer sentences. Make your notes more accurate by answering any questions you had where writing your notes in class. Use your textbook and reference sources to obtain the information you need to answer your questions. If necessary, ask your teacher or other students for help. Check with other students to be sure you did not leave out important information. Having good class notes will help you to be better prepared for tests:
A Method to Study: SQ3R If you ask how to Study effectively, one-word answer is: SQ3R. Survey / Question, Read, Recite/Recall, and Revise. 44
Any study requires a MIND SET that includes our disposition, our purpose, willingness to learn, attention, concentration and time. With this mindset when you study, this method of SQ3R works effectively. It is a time-tested technique and a must for any student who wants to become a super student. Now the method is. Survey, Question, Read Recite /Recall, and Revise. SURVEY: First using the speed-reading technique you must survey all the material (Text books, Class notes, workbooks any other study material), the title, sub-headings, diagrams, maps etc., This will help your mind to get in touch with matter for study and it works like a good background. QUESTION: Now set objectives by asking questions about the topic. Especially ask questions about what you think are important. Ask questions on topic, sub headings, definitions etc. READ: After you are asked the questions, set out on the reading mission with the questions in your mind, Read very attentively, slowly and with full focus. Have pen I pencil in your hand and underline or write. the main points, words, sentences etc. you may take notes while reading. Check and see whether you are following the logic of the author, whether you have the basic information given. Follow this for matter under every sub heading. Recite/Recall: This step hammers the material in your memory. Once you have read something you need to speak out loudly, the points that have learnt. What will happen then in that you will also hear the material - giving a double effect. You can also try to write in your own words the summary of the read material. Revise: The most important step is to revise your material using FRT (Frequent Revision Technique). Revise on the following day, week, fortnight and month keeping in touch with the material is the only real technique. This makes sure that you don’t forget what you’ve studied. This is the fundamental technique of effective study. So, from today make use of this method to study anything new-the results will be there for you to see. 45
Tips on Taking the Examination 1. Margins: leave ample space as margins on all four sides on the answer book-left, right and bottom. The left side margin should be about one and a half inches the top one about an inch while the right side and bottom margins should be just above half an inch. 2. Understand the questions properly: Take note of the key words contained in the questions and plan the answers accordingly. 3. Judicious selection: Most question papers have more questions than are expected to answer. Selection is to made judiciously. Select and mark the questions you are sure about. Then, if some more are to be answered, find out what you can do better than others. Once the selection is made don’t bother about the ones you have left out. 4. Numbering: Numbering the answers is very important. Write the number on the left-hand margin. Keep the type of marking 1.11, A, a, (a), a) etc. as you find in the question paper. Wrong numbering can cause much confusion and you may lose marks unnecessarily. 5. Concentrate on the answer you are writing: Try to answer the question in best way possible. Develop the answer systematically and bring in as many points as possible. Don’t think about the questions you have already answered, or about the questions you have left out. 6. Time and Space: Decide about the length of an answer according to the marks allotted, and the time can be given about it. There are specific instructions in some cases: the answer not exceeds 200 words... etc. you should stick to the regulations a few words more or a few words less. 7. Your answers should be systematic: A single glance should give the impression that your answer is really good. Use separate paragraphs for each idea you develop. Headings and sub headings should be given and underlined. 8. Write legibly: All students cannot have beautiful hand writing. But all can have a legible hand. A shabby hand writing, which is not at all legible, will irritate the examiner and he will not be generous in awarding marks. Spacing is also important. 46
9. Neatness: Avoid scratching off a word or a sentence unless it is completely wrong. When a word or sentence is wrong, neatly draw a line across it, don’t blot it out. Also, take care with few pages of your answer book, “first impression is the best impression.” the first few pages would create an impression on the examiner about the quality of the stuff he is handling. 10. Don’t wait till the last line of the sheet: To be finished to ask for the additional sheets. Ask before. 11. Numbering the pages: It is very important it would help you to arrange the answer sheets without any problem at the dose of the examination. 12. Don’t leave out: If you are not very sure about the answers to a question and don’t find any other option-attempt it and do what you can. Even if the question is out of syllabus you should make an attempt. 13. Appeals: Some students make appeals to the examiner “I am a poor boy. “My parents are handicapped, sir please help me this would create a favorable attitude. 14. Don’t use any slogans: Religious symbols on the part of answer sheet or statements like” jai Ram” “Jesus loves you” etc. should not be written on paper. 15. Be to the point: Avoid unnecessary details. Don’t write whatever you know. Write as required. Be precise and clear. Lengthy answers without any content won’t fetch marks. 16. Conditioning your mind: is important anxiety and worry should be avoided. 17. Diagrams: They are to be drawn neatly and completely labeling all the parts clearly, 18. Don’t try to play fowl: Copying, writing few words on your palm, on your carpets copying from your neighbor etc. are harmful. It is not fair and it will create tension and anxiety in you. As a result, you may forget even what you have learnt very well.
47
CONCENTRATING WHEN STUDYING Concentration is the eternal secret of every moral achievement Stefan Zweig 1881-1942 1. Concentration: is the ability or power of focusing all one’s attention. 2. Focus: Before you begin studying, take a few minutes to summarize a few objectives, gather what you will need and think of a general strategy of accomplishment. 3. Incentives: Create an incentive if necessary for successfully completing a task, such as term papers, design projects long book reviews, set up a special incentive. 4. Change topics: Changing the subject you study every one or two hours is good. If you have a lot of reading, try the SQ3R method. Ask yourself how could you increase your activity level while studying. Perhaps a group will be the best? Creating study questions? Ask your teacher for alternative strategies for learning. The more active you are learning the better. Take regular, scheduled breaks that tit you. Do something different from what you’ve been doing (e.g., walk around if you’ve been sitting), and in a different area. 5. Rewards: Give yourself a reward when you’ve completed a task 6. Best practices: you should notice improvement in a few days, but like any practice their will be ups, levels, and downs: It will benefit other activities you do! 7. Be Here now: This deceptively simple strategy is probably the most effective. When you notice your thoughts wandering astray say to yourself: “Be here now” and gently bring your attention back to where you want it for example: studying and your attention strays all the other homework you have, to a date, to the you’re hungry say to yourself “Be here now” Focus back on subject questions, Summarizing, Outlining, mapping, etc. and maintain your attention there as long as possible. When it wanders again repeat a “Be here now” and gently bring your attention back, and continue this practice, repeatedly. It will work! 48
