It is a great opportunity for me to admire the greatness of our God, His wonderful deeds! Empowered by His love and faithfulness, had established the cornerstone of leadership and perseverance for our youth all through the years. I want to commend the leaders and members of QCPACE-UMYF for choosing a very appropriate theme this 2013, “Building up my Life on Jesus” which was taken from Luke 6:46-49. The term used ‘dig deep’ is often needful to reach the rock of foundation. We must dig deep, deeper into our hearts to its very core, to build upon the Rock of faith in Jesus Christ, and your life will be good, firm, strong, and solid because it has been built on a good, firm, strong solid foundation. It is my fervent prayer that you will all have a Joyful, Peaceful, Hopeful Christmas - rooted in the inner serenity deep faith provides, strong enough to survive the disappointments and sorrows life delivers to our doorsteps and exuberant enough to celebrate life’s happiest times. Have a blessed and rewarding Christmas Institute! SOLID!

Under His Wings, Bishop Rodolfo A. Juan Resident Bishop, Manila Episcopal Area

REV. DR. DANIEL N. MIRANDA DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT

The United Methodist Church Manila Episcopal Area Quezon City Philippines Annual Conference East Northwest District 130 Kamuning Road, Kamuning Quezon City Tel. No: (02) 345-8357 OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT To my dearly loved young women and men serving in the vineyard of the Lord Jesus Christ called the Quezon City Philippines Annual Conference East UMYF: Greetings of peace, love, joy and steadfast faithfulness to Him who is Lord of all! In behalf of the Pastors and Deaconesses, their families and the local churches where they are currently appointed and the general Lay membership of our Annual Conference, I again commend you, the young people of our churches and the hope of our faith, in holding the 2013 Christmas Institute with the theme: “SOLID: Building my life on Jesus Christ.” Truly, our Lord Jesus is our one and true foundation, be it in our understanding of Him as Savior, Redeemer and Friend, in our individual and collective walks of faith and in our everyday relationships with fellow believers and seekers of His Word. “Solid,” indeed, is the message of your aptly chosen Scriptural verse this year, Luke 6: 46-49. Our faith is not founded on the shifting sands of society, of peer pressures nor of the fame and fortunes of this world. It is solely based and grounded on the Living Word of God, Jesus Christ Himself, and made real and true by the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. It is in this light that God Yahweh also admonished His chosen people, the emerging nation of Israel, when they were about to cross the Jordan into the Promised land of Canaan. The edict rings true then as it does right now: “Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.” (Deuteronomy 4:9) For this is because the Lord God is a consuming fire. He is a jealous God (Deuteronomy 4:24). Continue to know and build on Jesus Christ; always live in faith focused on attaining fullness of the Christian life and move on towards Christian perfection. May God’s abounding blessings be upon you all! Christ Above All. In His Name, Rev. Dan N. Miranda, MD, DMiss, PhD. District Superintendent NorthWest District QCPACE

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, the reason of the season. First of all, i would like to congratulate all the SED, NWD and QCPACE UMYF officers for organizing this Conference-wide CI 2013. I would also like to thank all the council officers and church workers of QCPACE for supporting and sending our UMYF to this big event. To all delegates, it is my prayer that after attending this CI, your life will never be the same again. You are the future deaconesses, pastors, missionaries and key leaders of our beloved UMC. Today, God needs young people like you who have solid faith in Jesus Christ and solid love to our beloved UMC to make disciples for the transformation of the world. Again, congratulations and God bless us all. DS Cleto Pera Southeast District, QCPACE

The United Methodist Church The United Methodist Youth Fellowship in the Philippines Quezon City Philippines Annual Conference East c/o Quezon City Philippines Annual Conference East Office, Kamuning, Quezon City CI NA!!!! Handa ka na ba??! :) In behalf of the QCPACE-UMYF executive committee and the Christmas Institute 2013 servant leaders (your big brothers and sisters in CI) I all greet you with a very blessed Christmas and a prosperous new year! Christmas Institute has become the trademark of the UMYF not only in the Philppines but also in the other parts of the world. It has become a great avenue of learning, fellowship and worship for the young people so I commend everyone who gave their time and effort for this ministry, the CI ministry. This year’s title “SOLID” with the theme “Building my life on Jesus Christ” is indeed very timely for all of us. Our nation and even our church has experienced and is still experiencing rough and challenging times because of the lack of a good foundation and an absence of a true and genuine faith which can only be found in a SOLID & GOOD FOUNDATION in JESUS CHRIST. So now I urge everyone to cherish this CI Experience by; reading and studying the Word diligently, committing to authentic worship and devotion and by enjoying the fellowship of one another. I hope and pray that this CI experience will not just last for 4 days but will continue to be in our hearts for the rest of our lives. I also pray that our CI text which is found in Luke 6:46-49 may serve as a reminder for all of us that we should live righteously and walk humbly with and for the Lord our God. “But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” – Luke 6:49 God bless mga kapatid! :) #SOLID #CHRISTAboveAll

THE CONCEPT Title: SOLID Theme: Building my life on Jesus Christ Thrust: Firm Foundation Bible Text: Luke 6:46-49 (The Wise and the Foolish Builders) 46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” Objectives: At the end of the 4-day camp, the youth will be able to: - Have a deep understanding of Jesus Christ - Build a relationship with Jesus Christ based on the Word of God - Decide to live like Jesus Christ everyday

DAY 1

CABIN DEVOTION DAY 1 By Kuya Nante Amador

There once was a story about two best friends who promised to build the same exact house with the same exact walls and the same exact roof using the same exact materials. They were both smart and thus it was necessary for them to employ the aid of the best architects and hire the best construction workers to be able to finish their dream houses. After some time, they decided to do a site visit to both houses. Much to their surprise, they realized they had built two identical houses which really made sense because they went to the same firm and found out they had consulted the very same people to do the work. Years passed and a devastating earthquake pounded the entire land and only one house out of the two was left standing. It turns out that one friend had lost his house that he built on an island resort by the beach (since he’s always wanted to retire near the ocean). On the other hand, the friend who built his house right in the heart of the city was unfazed since it was built on firm foundation. Questions for discussion: *Having the same counsel and employees, why do you think the first friend lost his house? *Is it important to listen and take good advice from people who are “experts” and “experienced” in their field? *How important is it to not just listen but apply what you learn from your spiritual advisers/from the bible? Share you experience to your Cabin family. *How often do you talk to God, our most trustworthy Adviser about your plans and your future? *Are you prepared for spiritual earthquakes? What will you do to be ready for trials that will “shake” your faith?

19

DAY 1 Today’s focus was about Luke 6:46-49. Most people don’t realize that before this, Jesus just finished a sermon talking about the saving power of the Kingdom of God. Most if not all of the people present have listened intently to the Great Preacher but only few would have the will to apply what they have learned in their lives. Listening is only the first step, what matters is if you really apply God’s teachings and believe in it’s power so much that you would build your life on it and be confident in the truth that no earthquake or storm is strong enough to shake that SOLID foundation. Good night!

DAY 2

CABIN DEVOTION DAY 2 By Kuya Mighty C. Rasing

The Carpenter’s Shovel: Setting my first steps toward the right direction With picks and shovels slung over their shoulders, the dwarves sang “Heigh-Ho, Heigh-Ho! Off to work I go…” as they headed out from their home to their place of work. Mining is a grueling and back-breaking job. But the dwarves are equal to the task. They have broad shoulders, calloused hands, and cheerful spirits to help them do their job. Well, okay, there’s a grumpy dwarf and a sleepy one. But if you’re a builder or a carpenter, you cannot afford to be sleepy. Sometimes, you can be grumpy because the task can be difficult. Good for the seven dwarves, they knew the right direction. They knew where they needed to go. But as a disciple of Christ, especially if you’re a new one, knowing the right direction can be challenging. What kinds of clothes does a Christian wear? Should I stop listening to the music of Miley Cyrus or Lady Gaga? Should I bring my big Bible to school (or work) everyday? Should I attend EVERY single activity in our church? We can be caught up with the right paint to use, the interior decoration, or even the kinds of nails to build our faith. Worry not. Those things will come later. For now, think about your foundations. Put your shovel on the ground. Dig deep. Use your foot to force the shovel if you have to. Jesus promised his followers that they will not be lonely after he goes to heaven—we have the Holy Spirit. But we still need to show up and commit to build our faith.

21

DAY 2 Thankfully, God gave us resources to do that. The founder of Methodism John Wesley even identified four areas that we can grow in our faith. Scripture. As a disciple, you need to read the Scripture. Meditate on it. Think about what it means. And look for ways to apply it in your life. Reason. The Bible has some difficult passages. As we experience a lot of things in our lives, we need to use our minds. Becoming a Christian doesn’t mean you have to surrender your reason and adapt a ‘blind-faith’ attitude. Reason works with faith. Tradition. The Christian faith goes back 2,000 years. Throughout history, our faith has had its share of ups and downs. Experience. Faith is not just about theories and creeds, Bible studies and memory verses, fellowships and orders of worship. It is meant to be lived and experienced. Dig deeper. Build a solid foundation.

DAY 3

CABIN DEVOTION DAY 3 By Kuya Daniel Esman

Text: Luke 6:46-49 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” “Faith is not a NOUN; it is a VERB.” Foundation’s Depth is one of the main factors an Engineer considers in order to be able to construct a strong and reliable building, which will serve as malls, office, church etc. A 100-storey building has a standard of 100-storey length foundation, meaning the height of the building to be constructed should always have the same length of its foundation. The visible and invisible variable of a building must always be symmetrical, and that’s the context of Luke 6:46-49, “The Wise and Foolish Builders”. Our Faith and Actions should always be Symmetrical. As Christians, it is easy for us to declare that Jesus Christ is our Lord; but in essence, we tend to forget how to apply it. We always feel so blessed every Sunday worship and even in Christmas Institutes but we always take for granted our duty outside the church and the Fellowship, which is our broader Parish, the World, our Society. Setting our Life on the Solid Rock is making our Faith in Action. The text reminds us that our goal is to build disciples for Jesus Christ through implementing and Applying our Solid Foundation of Faith. Being Blessed in CI 2013 is not enough; the point is to carry the fire towards the end. Putting God’s Words into Practice..

DAY 2

QUIET TIME 1 By Kuya Derrick Aspa

KNOW YOUR FOUNDATION “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have – JESUS CHRIST.” 1 Co 3:11 The first question is, “What is a foundation?” According to thefreedictionary.com, a foundation is a basis on which a thing stands, is founded, or is supported.1This definition implies that an object or structure that does not have a foundation cannot stand on its own. In other words, it is a weak structure. Moreover, the word “base” (which is considered as a synonym of the word “foundation”) pertains to a fundamental ingredient or a chief constituent which means that it is the most important part of a structure.2 Can you imagine having no feet? Your feet are the foundation of your body. They support you when you stand, walk, or run. And they help protect your spine, bones, muscle and soft tissues from damaging stress as you move around. Your feet perform better when all their muscles, arches, and bones are in their ideal stable positions.3Having no feet will cause stress to other parts of the body resulting to a weaker foundation. Can you imagine living in a house or building without a foundation? In many respects the foundation is the most important element of any building, be it a house or a high-rise. Simply put, the foundation is what everything rests on.4This means that a poor foundation will make the house or building more susceptible to storms, earthquakes, cyclones, etc. So the question is, as a Christian, what is your foundation? Are you building your life on a faulty foundation such as wealth, security, success or fame? A building with no foundation, or one that is poorly constructed will not last. According to Paul, no one can lay any foundation other than the one we already have – JESUS CHRIST. The foundation of the church and of all believers is no other than JESUS CHRIST. Nothing and no one else will do. JESUS CHRIST is the foundation of our life. He is our base and our reason

25

DAY 2 for being. Everything we are and do must fit into the pattern provided by Him. And so what should we do? Know your foundation. KNOW WHO JESUS CHRIST IS! We should know the supremacy of His eternality, His authority, His Word, His power, His justice, His grace, and His love. Give yourself to this: let us press on to know Jesus Christ! Pray that He would show you these things in His word. Swim in the bible every day! Don’t give it a little touch and then do what you really like to do. The bible is an ocean of bright glorious all-satisfying truth about Jesus Christ. God gave you a heart, a mind, emotions, and God wants all of it. If you want to build a life with a strong foundation, then read the bible and dedicate yourself to knowing Jesus Christ, our one and only foundation. Read and meditate: (We should always be excited and delighted to read the bible and know more about Christ and His laws/teachings) Psalm 119:97-105 97 Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. 98 Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me. 99 I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. 100 I understand more than the aged,[a] for I keep your precepts. 101 I hold back my feet from every evil way, in order to keep your word. 102 I do not turn aside from your rules, for you have taught me. 103 How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! 104 Through your precepts I get understanding; therefore I hate every false way. 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

DAY 3

QUIET TIME 2 By Kuya Derrick Aspa

5 STEPS CLOSER TO GOD So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world. 9 Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom instead of joy. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. James 4:7-10 7

1. Humble yourselves before God (4:7) - Yield to His authority and will, commit your life to Him and His control, and be willing to follow Him. 2. Resist the Devil (4:7) - Don’t let Satan entice and despise you. 3. Wash your hands and purify your hearts (4:8) - Live a pure life. 4. Let there be sorrow for your sins (4:9) - Don’t be afraid to express deep heartfelt sorrow for what you have done. 5. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up in honor (4:10) In the NLT Life Application Study Bible, James 4:1-10 is entitled “Drawing Close to God” and the very first advice (and the last advice in James 4:10) that James gives is BE HUMBLE! Are you humble? (this is a very tricky question :p) Humility is something that we need in all aspects of Christian living. When we accept Christ as our Saviour, we are humbled before Him because He died for our sins and gave us new life, something that we are not able to do by ourselves. When we accept Christ as our Lord, we are humbled before Him because we know that He is in control of everything in our lives which means that He is the leader and not us and our selfish desires. When we serve God, we are humbled before Him because we serve with a thankful heart bearing in mind everything that God has done in our lives. Without humility, we won’t be

28

DAY 3 able to accept Christ as our Savior, Lord and Master. James also tells us that we should resist the devil. The devil tempts us in so many ways and we should run away from these temptations before it’s too late. If we become humble and submit ourselves to God, He promises that we can resist the devil, and he will flee from us. A humble person also has a repentant heart. This means that we should know and accept that we are sinful and be sincere about our grief because of our shortcomings. Our sorrow is a validation that we do not want what we do, and therefore we desire to change to be more pleasing to Him. God gives us a very comforting assurance in verse 8, that if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. Bowing in humility before the Lord means recognizing that our worth comes from God alone. To be humble means leaning on His power and His guidance, and not going our own independent way. Although we don’t deserve God’s favour, He wants to lift us up and give us worth and dignity, despite our human shortcomings. And so I encourage you, be humble in every way and surely God will draw near to you for the bible says “God opposes the proud but favors the humble.” Read and Meditate: Psalm 25:8-10 8 The LORD is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray. 9 He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them his way. 10 The LORD leads with unfailing love and faithfulness all who keep his covenant and obey his demands. DAY 4

QUIET TIME 3 By Kuya Derrick Aspa

5

THE GEMS OF FAITH In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. 2 Peter 1:5-7

Many believers want an abundance of God’s grace and peace in their lives and they can achieve this through faith in Jesus Christ. But the question is “how can we be sure that our faith is true?” According to James 2:17, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless. We cannot earn our salvation by serving and obeying God. But such actions show that our commitment to God is real. Deeds of loving service are not a substitute for, but rather a verification of our faith in Jesus Christ. In other words, faith comes first before action, and it is this action which proves that our faith is genuine and true. The next question is how? Peter answers this question through listing the “actions” that would show that we have genuine faith. GEMS is an abbreviation to help you remember the manifestations of true faith based on the verses 2 Peter 1:5-7. GEMS stands for: Godliness (which includes Knowledge, Love and Brotherly affection) - According to the previous verses (2 Peter 1:3-4) we become godly people through our knowledge of God, which means, through reading the bible and participating in small groups. - Because of our knowledge of God and through the power of the Holy Spirit, we experience the love of God which overflows in our hearts. - Because this love overflows, we cannot help but share this love and

30

DAY 4 show brotherly affection to other people. Endurance - Because we have put our faith on Jesus Christ, our solid foundation, we can patiently endure every problem, pain, or challenge in our lives. The bible says anyone who stands firm through Jesus until the end will be saved. Moral Excellence - Strength of character; Standing by what is right according to the bible - This also means standing by what you believe in. And so we should be bold and be courageous all the time. - If all of your classmates cheat during exams, be morally excellent and don’t cheat! Self-control - People with self-control do not let their moods control them, they don’t lose their temper. They will do the right thing even if they don’t feel like doing it. - A person with self-control thinks before saying anything - A person with self-control knows how to balance his/her time According to Peter, faith must be more than belief in certain facts. True faith requires GEMS (Godliness, Endurance, Moral Excellence, Self-control). These actions do not come automatically. They require hard work. They are not optional and all of them must be a continual part of Christian life. God empowers and enables us, but He also gives us the responsibility to learn and grow. This year’s Christmas Institute is almost at its end. What now? We should not think of CI as the grand finale of every year. We should think of it as a stepping stone where we build our faith, learn more about the word of God and grow together with our brothers and sisters in faith so that we will be CIAs or Christians in Action when we go back to our family, friends and loved ones. Faith without works is dead, so be sure to have GEMS of faith with you after this CI. As Paul says rejoice always, I say to you rejoice! Only Jesus can give you full and satisfying joy, and it is such a privilege to serve God through our everyday lives. You should be excited because God has a lot in store for you. Rejoice and Godbless!

31

DAY 4 Read and Meditate: Psalm 15 1 Who may worship in your sanctuary, LORD? Who may enter your presence on your holy hill? 2 Those who lead blameless lives and do what is right, speaking the truth from sincere hearts. 3 Those who refuse to gossip or harm their neighbors or speak evil of their friends. 4 Those who despise flagrant sinners, and honor the faithful followers of the LORD, and keep their promises even when it hurts. 5 Those who lend money without charging interest, and who cannot be bribed to lie about the innocent. Such people will stand firm forever.

DAY 2 TIMOTHY

BIBLE STUDY 1:

Naghahanap ng Tagapagligtas Lucas 19:1-10

|

WRITER: Rev. Noel Legaspi

38

DAY 2 1. Tinawag ito ni John Wesley na “preventing (enabling) grace; including the first wish to please God, the first dawn of light concerning his will, and the first slight transient conviction of having sinned against him.”

Kailan at paano? DAY 3 TIMOTHY

BIBLE STUDY 2:

Posible Kahit Imposible Marcos 10:17-31

|

WRITER: Rev. Noel Legaspi

Ayon sa exposition ni Halford E. Luccock, “It is one of Jesus’ characteristic ways of talking in vivid hyperbole, with picturesque exaggeration. Here was a very mountain of impossibility.” Ayon sa Dictionary, hyperbole is “an extravagant statement or figure of speech intended not to be taken literally, as to wait an eternity.”

43

DAY 4 TIMOTHY

BIBLE STUDY 3:

Halimbawang Tutularan Juan 13:1-17

|

WRITER: Rev. Noel Legaspi

Ayon sa New Bible Dictionary (IVP 2nd Ed.), “The necessity to wash the feet, for comfort and cleanliness, resulted from the dusty roads, and foot washing was a sign of hospitality, generally performed by the meanest slave.”(I Sam.25:41;Luke 7:44).

46

DAY 4 kod sa lahat.

DAY 2 JOHN

BIBLE STUDY 1: The Grace of God

WRITER: Pastor Jay-ar Piolino SCRIPTURE MEMORIZATION: Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by GRACE you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the GIFT of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” (NIV) LESSON OBJECTIVES: • To understand that God’s grace is for all. It is inclusive. • To learn that Jesus saves you and me by his grace. INTRODUCTION: Begin the session by singing/reciting this hymn written by John Newton: AMAZING GRACE Amazing grace how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me; I once was lost, but now am found Was blind, but now I see. Ask someone in your group to lead in a short prayer. DISCUSSION: • After singing/reciting the hymn Amazing Grace, what specific word strikes you? Why? (Each member of the group is encouraged to share.) • In your own words, how do you define GRACE? • Read Ephesians 2:1-10. • What does the passage say about God? What does the passage say about you and your relationship with God? 1. GOD’S GRACE-- HIS GIFT TO US. “Grace is the free, unearned, unmerited gift of God’s love and acceptance. This gift is given to all of humankind. It is universal and none are excluded.” 1 • Have you received a gift from a friend or someone? What is the most expensive gift that you have received? (Ask someone to share.) 1 Steven W. Manskar, Accountable Discipleship: Living in God’s Household (Manila: Discipleship Resources-Philippines, 2013), 61

49

DAY 2 • In receiving gifts, you don’t have to buy it from him/her because it is voluntarily, willingly, and freely given to you without any compensation or payment. God’s grace is also like this. It is a gift. A precious gift. • Apostle Paul said that in Ephesians 2:8: “For it is by ______ you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the ________ of God.” • Yes, God’s grace is free, but it is not cheap! God’s grace is expensive! It is priceless! In Ephesians 1: 7-8 it is written: • “In him (Jesus) we have _____________ through his ________, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s _________ that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.” • God gives us freedom to receive the gift of grace. It is because God respects us and gives us freedom to say no to the gift of salvation. But God continues to love those people resist His gift of salvation. 2. GOD’S GRACE—EXPRESSION OF GOD’S LOVE. • Do you remember this line in an OPM song? “Mamahalin kita maging sino ka man…” • Abba Father loves and accepts you as you are. Yes! Even though you are a sinner, God loves you and He cares for you. • God’s love is not limited to those who love God. Even when that person doesn’t love God, God loves him still. That is called GRACE. We don’t deserve to be loved because we sinned before God, but God loves us and forgives us and restores us. • Read Isaiah 53:5 “But he was wounded for our __________________, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are __________________.” • How do you define SIN? ____________________________________________________ • Sin is like a cancer that destroys human life and community. The Good news is that there is a cure! What is that cure? The only cure for this disease is God’s grace. • The greatest expression of God’s love is that God took the initiative to restore the relationships broken by sin. According to the scripture, by “Jesus’ wounds we are healed!” Because the world was corrupted by sin, the image of God became distorted and disfigured.

50

DAY 2 • This is the amazing grace of God. Even though we are sinners, God chose to forgive us and save us. God has removed the blockage of sin and given human beings the power to accept this love and participate in this relationship. REFLECTION TIME: • How can you share the grace and love of God to your family, friends, and other people? • God’s grace is free but it is not cheap. It is expensive, it is priceless, it is precious. Do you often neglect God’s grace? DAY 3 JOHN

BIBLE STUDY 2: Surrendering to God

WRITER: Pastor Jay-ar Piolino SCRIPTURE MEMORIZATION: Galatians 2:20 “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” LESSON OBJECTIVES: • To commit and recommit to a life of personal obedience to the will of God. • To appreciate the value of soaking in God’s love. INTRODUCTION: Begin the session by singing/reciting the song Lord, I Offer My Life in an act of prayer. Chorus: Lord, I offer my life to you everything I’ve been through Use it for your glory Lord, I offer my days to you, Lifting my praise to you As a pleasing sacrifice Lord, I offer you my life. DISCUSSION: • Many Christians recognize Jesus as their Savior but do not recognize as Lord. They want Jesus to save them, but do not want to obey him. Some Christians say that Jesus is their Lord but it does not reflect on their action. • What do you think is the reason why they don’t fully recognize Jesus as Lord? • Surrendering to God is a matter of decision. If you decided to surrender to God, then you must be willing to obey him because Jesus is now you Lord and not you. Jesus is now your Master and you are his servant. • According to Merriam-Webster, SURRENDER means to YIELD to the POWER, CONTROL, or POSSESSION of another upon demand.2 2 The Merriam-Webster and Garfield Dictionary (Springfield, MA: Merriam-Webster Inc., Publishers, 1999), p. 603

53

DAY 3 1. NO LONGER YOU WHO LIVE BUT JESUS WHO LIVES IN YOU! • In Galatians 2:20, Apostle Paul affirmed: “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but __________ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” • Paul learned to obey God and he surrendered his life to Him as his Lord and Savior. • Is it easy to obey God and surrender to His will? 2. PUT ON THE NEW SELF • Read Colossians 3:1-4. “For you died, and your life is now _____________ with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your _______________, appears, then you also appear with him in glory.” • When you surrender your life to God, your imperfections, your weaknesses, your failures are now hidden because Christ conceals it with his grace so that it is no longer you shall be seen but Jesus. 3. LOVING LIKE JESUS • Read 13:34-35. “A new commandment I give to you: ___________________. AS I HAVE LOVED YOU, so you must LOVE ONE ANOTHER. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” • Did you notice that Jesus repeatedly saying that we must love one another? It is because this is Jesus’ command to his disciples. Jesus emphasized the importance of loving one another as he loved us. • To surrender to Jesus means to obey his commandments. If Jesus is our Lord and Savior, loving one another is NOT AN OPTION, but rather, a COMMAND. • Jesus is the greatest lover in the universe. As his disciples, we must obey to his words and yield to him. Staying in love with Jesus is a choice. It needs an effort, spending time with him daily, and loving others as Jesus loved us. REFLECTION TIME: • Is there any hindrance in surrendering your life fully to God? (eg. spirit of Pride, Anxiety, etc.) • What can you sacrifice in order to have a deeper, stronger, and intimate relationship with Jesus? • Make a commitment prayer to God.

54

DAY 3 CLOSING: Let your group sing/recite this song and end in a prayer. I SURRENDER ALL All to Jesus I surrender; all to him I freely give; I will ever love and trust him, in his presence daily live. Refrain: I surrender all, I surrender all, all to thee, My blessed Savior, I surrender all.

DAY 4 JOHN

BIBLE STUDY 3:

The Mission of Jesus Christ WRITER: Pastor Jay-ar Piolino

SCRIPTURE MEMORIZATION: Ephesians 5:1-2 “Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” LESSON OBJECTIVES: • To understand the mission of Jesus and the mission of the Church. • To begin a daily process towards Christ-likeness. • To accept the responsibility of being a disciple of Jesus. INTRODUCTION: • One of the basic questions in philosophy is this: Why are you here? (Ask someone in the group to share something about this) • This question is necessary because it pertains to your mission in life. It is important that you as a person knows and understands your life’s mission on earth. DISCUSSION: 1. THE MISSION OF JESUS AND OUR MISSION • Jesus quoted his “life mission” from Isaiah 61:1-2. This was Jesus’ dramatic speech where he fearlessly announced why he was here on earth. (Read Luke 4:18). “The Spirit of Lord is upon me, because he has _____________ me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim _____________________to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set liberty to the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” • This was Jesus’ mission statement. Jesus was indeed ready to take the challenge and do his mission on earth! • If you were Jesus, are you ready to accept the challenge to be crucified for the sake of others? • We must understand that the mission of Jesus is also our mission. To proclaim the good news of God’s grace and exemplifying Jesus’ command to love God and neighbor is the mission of the church.

57

DAY 4 Matthew 28:19-20 (CEB) “Therefore, ___________________ of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything that I’ve commanded you. “ • This passage is also known as The Great Commission where Jesus challenged his disciples into a mission and evangelism. As followers of Christ, we ought to fulfill the ministry of Jesus because it is the mission of the body of Christ—the church. 2. IMITATE JESUS, HIS MISSION AND SERVICE • Sharing: If you are given a chance to impersonate someone, who will that person be and why? • Impersonating someone is a challenging task. In order to imitate someone, you must know the way he/she talks and moves. You also need to imitate his facial expression or body language. • Imitating Jesus is not just having the same hairdo; it is more of having the same character and values. In Ephesians 5:1-2, Paul urged the Christians to imitate Jesus. “Be ___________________ of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” • Let us be like Jesus by serving others because to be like Jesus means having a life of service to others. Matthew 25:40: “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for the __________________ of these brothers of mine, you did it for me.” • Be Jesus to somebody. To imitate Jesus is to be Jesus to the world, doing Jesus’ mission and service. 3. THE CALL TO A RADICAL DISCIPLESHIP • Jesus made an absolute demand. When he said, “Follow me,” he meant leaving something or someone or some place behind. To obey meant to walk into the unknown imaginative—ready to listen, to learn, to witness, to serve. • The word disciple means “learner”, “student”, “follower”. To be a

58

DAY 4 disciple means you have to spend time with your teacher, follow him wherever he goes, and obey his commandments. Luke 14: 27 “And anyone who does not __________________ and follow me cannot be my disciple.” • Jesus challenged those people who wanted to become his disciple. Jesus set requirements to become a disciple. One of those is stated in the bible text above. This is the cost of being a disciple of Jesus. To be a disciple of Jesus is making a commitment to follow his ways and grow in his likeness. REFLECTION TIME: • How can I become Jesus to somebody? In my family? In my church? In my community? • In what ways can I follow Jesus wholeheartedly? • Am I willing to become Jesus’ disciple? DAY 2 PETER

BIBLE STUDY 1:

Rescued, Renewed, Restored WRITER: Rev. Dr. Melvin Jay Guerrero

Topic: THE GRACE OF GOD Definition of Grace: Unmerited favor Scripture Lesson: Titus 3:4-7 “But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” Situation: Paul was reminding Christians of their gracious salvation through Jesus Christ. Observation: V. 4 - Paul is speaking of Jesus Christ who is the embodiment of God’s goodness and loving kindness. V. 5 - Paul is saying that salvation is not attained through a person’s works or deeds but only through God’s mercy. V. 6 - In this verse, we are told that the Holy Spirit comes to all those who believe or put their faith in Jesus Christ. Through this, the believer receives transformation and restoration. V. 7 - Justified: When a sinner repents and places his or her faith in Jesus Christ, he or she is declared innocent and faultless by God because Christ’s righteousness is attributed to him or her. Heirs: through faith in Jesus Christ, believers of Christ become adopted children of God. Interpretation: Believers of Christ are rescued, renewed and restored though God’s grace and mercy. Doing good works is merely a product of one’s faith in Christ. Application: As I wrestle with the concept and definition of unmerited favor and grace, I hearken back to the time when the strongest recorded typhoon in history hit the midsection of our country. After the horrendous natural calamity that is internationally known as Haiyan, and locally known as Yolanda, the world has witnessed the outpouring material and moral support from all Filipinos and the international community. It doesn’t matter if the ones who suffered were total strangers. It doesn’t matter if those who gave their time and resources did not receive anything in return. They saw

61

DAY 2 that there were people who were in dire need, and they gave off themselves completely. Now I believe this gives us a clear idea of unmerited favor. When someone helps another person in need without any motive of getting anything in return, the virtue of selflessness is brought into the spotlight. It is the same with parents giving their kids birthday presents. Even if the parent doesn’t owe anything to his or her child, life is celebrated and rewarded because of the parent’s love and affection for his or her progeny. This simple concept of undeserved grace is magnified in God’s context. He does not owe us anything since He is the creator of everything, and yet He has given us His love and mercy through His Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We all suffer from literal and metaphorical storms and we clearly need aid badly. Like those hit by the super typhoon, we too become helpless when we are overwhelmed by the calamities of life. But behind the dark and gloomy clouds, the sun is always shining. There is hope in God; He is the source of our salvation. All we need to do is believe and give ourselves completely to Him. Related passages: Eph. 2:4-9; Romans 3:19-28

DAY 3 PETER

BIBLE STUDY 2: I Surrender All

WRITER: Rev. Dr. Melvin Jay Guerrero Topic: SURRENDERING TO GOD Definition of Surrender: Total Submission Scripture Lesson: Proverbs 16:2-3 2

All the ways of a man are pure in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirit. 3 Commit your work to the LORD, and your plans will be established. Situation: Solomon wrote simple moral principles about fearing The Lord and living by His wisdom. Observation: v.2 - All human beings think that all their actions are acceptable and justifiable. But God knows any person’s true motive. V.3 - If anyone wants a life of success and fulfillment, one should submit or surrender to the will of The Lord. Interpretation: As we strive to please God and seek His purpose in our lives, we must realize that in spite of our best intentions and determination, we often stumble and fall short. We set our hearts on things and we make plans as it is right to do so! But we must first be willing to seek and be guided by the will of The Lord through prayer and the reading and listening of His Word in order for our plans to succeed. By our strength alone, it is impossible. We cannot go on living on our own. We need to completely depend on our God. Application: Our family has a nightly ritual: My daughters, my wife, and I enjoy fun physical activities like wrestling and tickle matches before bedtime. Other times, my girls pretend they are super heroines -- I usually get assigned to be the monster -- and as we rough and tumble on the bed, the children (and their mom) do their best to pin me down while I pretend to struggle and lose to their constant shoving. The difficulty of laughing and grappling at the same time becomes apparent when our limbs become soggy as noodles and each one of us feel like beached whales after playing. At least everyone is calm and composed before reading bedtime Bible stories. However, sometimes, when my daughters get scared of the dark or when they hear a loud crack of thunder during the rain, my girls lose their “superpowers” and they come rushing for daddy’s protection. The role playing ends. At the end of the day, reality sets in and my children

64

DAY 3 realize that they are helpless in the real world. We too can act like little kids in our daily existence when we think we are able to overcome the struggles of life using just our abilities and skills. Oftentimes, we think we are in total control of our lives that we make a lot of plans without consulting The Lord. But Solomon reminds us in Proverbs 16:2-3 & 19:21, that although we have the ability to plan ahead and prepare for what is to come, it would be better to base our actions and motives on His perfect will. Related verse: James 4:6-10

DAY 4 PETER

BIBLE STUDY 3:

Christ’s Mission: To Seek and Save the Lost

WRITER: Rev. Dr. Melvin Jay Guerrero

Topic: THE MISSION OF JESUS Definition of Mission: An important goal, task or purpose Lesson: John 3:16-21 “16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. 21 But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” Situation: Jesus admonishes the Pharisee named, Nicodemus and came to free men and women from slavery to sin and the bondage of legalism. Observation: V. 16 - God loves all human beings and doesn’t want them to perish because of their evil and sinful ways, which is why He sent His Son, Jesus Christ. V.17 - Christ’s mission is to save the world out of His perfect love. V. 18 - All people are called to trust and and commit their lives to Christ. All people would make Jesus their Lord and Savior. V.19,20 - Christ offers his light to everyone but not all receive His light because others choose to live in darkness or evil. V.21 - Anyone who accepts and follows God’s truth (His Word) molded by God. Interpretation: God’s love is for all. Jesus came so that those who would choose to believe in Him would not suffer eternal damnation but have a happy and joyful eternity with the Lord in heaven. Application: Where is God? Does He care? Is He there at all? Why is He making me suffer? Does He really love me? Do these questions sound familiar? There may be some of you here today who have been experiencing pain and suffering. It is as if your life is a dark and lifeless

67

DAY 4 pit of sorrow and grief. John 3:16-21 has good news. Truly, God is with us, He cares, He exists, He does not rejoice in our suffering, and He really loves us. Jesus said that God loves the world and does not want people to perish. This is why He came into the world to bring us closer to Him and save us from sin and death. He wants us to have faith in Him so we could live with Him for all eternity! God did not promise us suffering-free lives down here. But in our pain, we can be assured of the fact that in our affliction, God will deliver us. In our sorrow, He will be our comfort. In our dark times, He will be our light. Additional passages: Jesus came to... Preach the Good News - Luke 4:18 Die for sinners - Romans 5:6 Give life as a ransom - Matthew 20:28 Save His people from sins - Matthew 1:21
