A JOURNEY OF FAITH AND SERVICE:
TH E P U N O U N ITE D M ETH O D I ST C H U R C H 2 5TH F O U N D I N G A N N IVE R SA RY In this fast-paced world of hard news, nothing is more inspiring and satisfying to the human spirit than delivering good news. It could be about human achievement, a collective victory, or a milestone being celebrated like 25 years of Puno United Methodist Church serving the Lord. But whatever the celebration, whatever the occasion, good news is always welcome news. When the maiden edition of The Good News Times came out in October 1997, it was basically the labor of love of a merry group of Puno UMC members like Mae Cardenas, editor-in-chief, Dra. Myrna P. Velasquez, news editor and writers Justice Reynato S. Puno, Isaac S. Puno, III, Rev. Johann Osias and Renato M. Velasquez. Everyone knew their roles, performed them to the hilt, and came together to share God’s good news. For them, it was their ministry to speak of God’s greatness with the written word. Years have gone by, Good News Times members have come and gone, but the love for literary artistry and passion to speak and write and sing of God’s greatness burns stronger than ever. From the example of the very first Good News Times editorial board comes this labor of love from the 2012 Puno UMC Good News Times group – a commemorative 25th anniversary issue that reminds every member of the Puno UMC family of where we’ve come from, and hopefully, will inspire us to head where God wants us to go – to become stronger, better, and a more united evangelizing church, a family with God at the center. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then imagine the stories behind the pictures of Puno UMC’s greatest milestones, as we compile 25 of the most historic events in Puno UMC history. This Good News Times centrefold serves as the piece de resistance of the 2012 Good News Times crew. We have accomplished so much in our 25 years together, through sheer hard work, a collective effort and with the light of the Lord guiding our path. Nothing is capable of stopping us now. How about we come together stronger, better, and more solid for 25 years more? - James Rey P. Velasquez Editor-at-large, The Puno UMC Good News Times 2012

OCTOBER 2012
WHY THE GOOD NEWS TIMES The good news is that God loves all of us and that we can be with Him if we accept His Son Jesus Christ to be our Lord and Saviour. Our church, the PMUMC is growing in numbers. As I see it, more members are now committing their time and resources to serve the Lord. In my experience, I am encouraged when I hear news about other people’s service for the Lord. This kind of news refreshes my faith. I would also like it to be this way in our church. That we are updated of each other’s activities as well as the activities of other local churches and possibly those in other countries. Just as the good news kept the disciples together and made their faith stronger, so should this newsletter. Jojo T. Puno Reprinted from the maiden issue of The Good News Times, October 1997. The Good News Times was the winning name of the PUMC newsletter first published in October 1997.

REVIVE -
MANILA EPISCOPAL AREA
20
Puno United Methodist Church hosted ‘ REVIVE’ on March 24, 2012 attended by about 700 United Methodists from the Manila Episcopal Area. It was a whole day of Holy-Spirit-led activities that started with a flowing Praise and Worship led by Alab Judah. It was followed by the Call to Confession by Sis. Gloria Dimalanta, a member of the Revive Core group. Prayers for the Unity of the Methodist Church were represented by the different ministries led by Princess Michaela M. Mangubat (Children’s group), Sis. Joanna Reuta (UMYF), Sis. Mary Grace Estacio (UMYAF), Sis. Ma. Carmelita Ramota (WSCS), Bro. Roy Raralio (UMM), Dss. Cleanor Ladia (Deaconess), and Rev. Dr. Oliver Mangubat (Pastor). DS Cleto Pera prayed in closing for the Opening Worship. In the keynote address of Retired Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno, he lamented on fettle of the United Methodist churches today, saying, “Our growth has been stunted; we have been infected by the virus of partisan politics, and are now confronted by the clear and present danger of an exodus from our own members… How do we get out of the belly of the whale? We need revival in our churches! We need revival in ourselves! And we need it today, for tomorrow may be

too late …Let us do what we can to renew our Church and to revive ourselves and then let us leave to God what we cannot change.” During the first plenary, Rev. Dr. Eleazar E. Javier talked about Scriptural Holiness. His message was as powerful as how he delivered it, with much fire and enthusiasm despite his very weak and atrophic condition. Rev. Dr. Rebecca Mina Navarro Palomo spoke about Healing and Unity at the second plenary. She spoke with the finesse of an elegant and learned woman of God and indeed, with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. Bro. Arnel de Pano with the Unity Choir ushered the afternoon break-out groups with music that was not only spirit-reviving but also kept the participants mentally and physically awake. Spiritual Maturity was taken up by Pastor Criscelyn C. Navarro, a seasoned preacher and teacher of Life-Growth Network,Inc. and Windwatch Prayer Ministry; Bro. Pacifico B. Aniag spoke on Conflict Resolution and Management and Bro. Mighty C. Rasing raised the SQ (Spirit Quotient) of the youth group as he dealt with Disciple-Shift. Participants were truly blessed and revived
during the sharing time, having testified of how God moved shook them from their spiritual lethargy. After all the spiritual “washing” and “make-over” that everyone experienced, the conference ended with a powerful consecration and dedication service led by Rev. Allan T. Asuncion. The movers and members of the Core Committee of QC-PACE are CJ Reynato S. Puno, DS Daniel N. Miranda, DS Cleto Pera, Bishop Solito Toquero, Rev. David Sablan, Jr., Rev. Dr. Oliver S. Mangubat, Rev. Gilbert Cedillo, Rev. Noel Legaspi, Rev. Rosalinda de la Rosa, Bro. Crisanto Asumen, Bro. Mighty Rasing, Sis. Marlee Ramota, Sis. Gloria Dimalanta, Brig. Gen. Lysias Cabusao, Sis. Joan Pera and Dss. PUMC OPENS ITS SECOND MISSION CHURCH
“How can people have faith in the Lord and ask him to save them, if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear, unless someone tells them? And how can anyone tell them without being sent by the Lord? The Scriptures say it is a beautiful sight to see even the feet of someone coming to preach the good news.” - Romans 10:14-15, CEV
This passage is often used as the basis for the church’s missionary program, and rightly, so, before people can call on God, they must believe. But in order to believe, they must hear the Word, for it is the Word that creates faith in the heart of the hearer (Rom 10:17). This meant that a herald of the Word must be sent, and it is the Lord who does the sending.1 I believe this has been and will always be our biblical foundation on why we keep on doing the mission work God has commissioned us to do for the past 25 years. Our vision as a church is: To be an Evangelizing Church under the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit. In addition, one of our Missions is Evangelism. After eleven years, our first mission point, the Masa Mission Center at the Doňa Nicasa, Subdivision, Payatas, Quezon City was officially organized or accepted as a regular congregation last March of this year 2012 at Kamuning First United Methodist Church. It was named the Puno-Masa United Methodist Church. Rev. Gilbert Cedillo and deaconess Sharamae Cea are the first full-time church workers of the
22
church. Atty. Leven S. Puno is the first Chairperson of the Church Council. The Puno UMC is a living witness of the power of the Holy Spirit flowing and enabling in the lives of the officers and members who committed their three T’s: Time, Treasure and Talent together with love, patience and sacrifice into the ministry of the church. Thus, the Puno-Masa UMC is a testament to the work that the mother church has done in its first mission point. The PUMC Church Council headed by former Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno, had their Annual Church Program and Planning at the Parks and Wildlife last May 1, 2012 . In celebration of its 25th Founding Anniversary this year, the Council unanimously decided to open a second mission point at the compound of Ed and Eva Laureano in Bgy. Sto. Cristo, San Jose, Delmonte, Bulacan. In May 19, 2012, the Puno United Methodist Men under the leadership of Engr. Rodel Sagun, UMM President, visited the Laureano’s in San Jose, Bulacan . They conveyed the church council action to

establish a second mission point at their place which they readily accepted. Concrete actions were laid down in preparation for the opening of the mission work. UMM members who joined the team include, Dr. Romulo Rocena, B.Gen. Lysias Cabusao (Ret.), Mr. Renato Velasquez, Mr. Carlito Demo, Engr. Oscar Meman, Mr. Tito Opina, Engr. Edwin Ravelo, Atty. Fred Soberano and Rev. David Sablan Jr. Who would have thought that two months after the organization of the Puno-Masa UMC, another mission point would immediately be considered by the church? But God has other plans for the spacious property of the Laureano’s in San Jose Delmonte, Bulacan. On June 17, 2012 the first United Methodist Church worship service was held in that place originally intended to house chicken cages. Instead, echoes of Praise and Worship to God are heard thereafter every Sunday afternoon. At present, there is a regular attendance of 40-50 people in the worship service. Members from Puno UMC, the UMM, WSCS, UMYAF, UMYF, some members of the Praise & Worship Team and few children, take turns going to the Mission field and be a blessing to the brethren there. Two regular Bible Study sessions are held every Tuesday at the Pronebo Compound and Thursday at the Upao Area at 3:00 pm respectively. Regular prayer meeting and Sunday Worship Service begins at 2:00 pm till 4:30 pm. Children frequently hold their Sunday School classes led by church deaconess Esther Joy Herradura aided by two student deaconesses, Crisel Macaraig and May Ann Mendoza and volunteer Youth Teachers. Regular Tambourine Dance Training is done every week to instruct the youth for ministry. Members of the PUMC Servant Leadership Team headed by Rev. Noel Legaspi, Pastor Adelbert
Frejas, Dss. Esther Joy Herradura and Rev. David Sablan Jr. take turn in preaching the Gospel at the mission point. Almost every week new souls are won for Jesus Christ through our consistent study of the Bible with the non believers. Our sincere thanks to the Laureano family for their untiring support for the Mission work God has entrusted to us. Though we still have a long way to go, the road is clear and encouraging in our work at the Bulacan mission point. I am very pleased and blessed to be a part of the Puno United Methodist Church who faithfully obey, support and invest in the Great Commission of our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 28: 1820, “Jesus drew near and said to them, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.” TEV. To God be all the glory and praise! Rev. David Sablan, Jr. 1 From The Bible Exposition Commentary. ABLAZE conference 2012 The Ablaze Conference was envisioned to be a gathering for Christians who sought to have an intimate and life-changing encounter with the Holy Spirit. For the past three years, the Conference was a venue for just this as the Holy Spirit moved mightily and made His presence so apparent to the participants. In the most recent conference alone, hundreds of people from all walks of life experienced the amazing outpouring of God’s miracles, signs and wonders, through the power and manifest presence of the Holy Spirit. For this year, the Organizing Committee seeks to organize the Conference on a much bigger scale in the hope of reaching more people who thirst and desire to encounter the Holy Spirit. Beginning last May 26, 2012, and during the last Saturday of the month thereafter, the Organizing Committee initiated an Ablaze Tour. The Ablaze Tour, though smaller in scale compared to the main Conference in October, seeks to spark revival in the area in which it will be brought. The Ablaze Tour has gone to the Pampanga, Cavite, Metro Manila, Laguna and Rizal Episcopal areas and God did not disappoint. Many people were ministered to and experienced the powerful
24
movement of the Holy Spirit. The month of the October, which is also the anniversary month of our Church, will be an exciting time for those looking forward to attend the conference. There will be an Ablaze Night on October 25, 2012, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. which will be a fiery and spirit-filled prayer and worship rally. The following day, October 26, 2012, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. will be the main Ablaze Conference. These two events, to be held at the Word of Hope Christian Family Church in North Edsa, Quezon City (in front of SM North), which will be highlighted the attendance of several knowledgeable, passionate and spirit-filled speakers and a praise and worship team composed of experienced musicians based both locally and internationally. The main Conference is just a few days away. The Organizing Committee invites everyone to attend and support these last two activities of this year’s Conference. It asks all participants to be open and be prepared because, as what was seen in the past Conferences, God will definitely show up and show off! Atty. Charles Puno
OCTOBER 2012
QC PACE ENVISIONS NATIONWIDE REVIVAL OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH The Revival Manual of the Quezon City Philippines Annual Conference East states, “The genesis of any radical change, like the advent of the Kingdom of God as advocated by the historical Jesus or the heart-warming experience of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Movement, always involved two things: a problem that gnawed through the core of society convulsing said entity and a visionary who saw such dilemma and tried to do something about it. The first one we may liken to what is happening now to the United Methodist Church, here in the Philippines, and the second, in the person of Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno, a retired high magistrate of the land.” CJ Puno painted a grim picture of the current Methodist landscape, saying: “After my retirement in the High Court on May 17, 2010, I was able to accept more invitations to speak in our local United Methodist churches. In all of these encounters, the clergy and the laypeople always discussed with me the uncomfortable state of Methodism, albeit sometimes with halting tongues. Everyone bewailed the moral morass that was pulling the church down but nobody liked to talk or touch the problem, as if it were something radioactive in nature. The picture was tormenting, and in the words of Abraham Lincoln,
You can’t escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” True to his form, Chief Justice Puno went beyond rhetoric and the epidermis of the problem. In a state of “seeming demise”, a revival, a spiritual renewal became the needed resuscitation for the United Methodist Church. He then gathered the top clergy and lay leaders of the Northwest District, Quezon City Philippine Annual Conference East (QC-PACE) to craft a revival program for the District. But like any good idea, the spirit of revival soon spread to the other District of the Annual Conference, “infecting” their pastoral and laity leaderships also. On January 8, 2012, an initial meeting of like-minded, spirit-driven, and revival-oriented Methodist laity and clergy, with Chief Justice Puno as the lead convenor, took place at the Puno United Methodist Church. Subsequent meetings soon happened and a revival event was then formed with the theme of “Bringing Scriptural Holiness to the Land” and with Psalm 80:18b-19 as the biblical foundation. The expected end result of this godly undertaking was thus: “The people called Methodists, praying, humbling themselves before the Almighty God, seeking and being given God’s forgiveness and being empowered by continued on page 43

THE GOOD NEWS TIMES
WE NEED REVIVAL, THE WESLEY WAY CHIEF JUSTICE REYNATO S. PUNO (RET.)
Keynote Address, Soft Launching of Revive! , March 24, 2012, PUMC
First, allow me to give you a brief glimpse of the genesis of this Revival Program. After my retirement in the High Court on May 17, 2010, I was able to accept more invitations to speak extended by our churches throughout our jurisdiction. In all these encounters, the clergy and the lay of our churches always discussed with me the uncomfortable state of Methodism albeit sometimes with halting tongues. Just everybody bewailed the moral morass that is pulling us down but nobody likes to touch the problem as if it were radioactive. The picture was tormenting for in the words of Lincoln, “ you cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.” The calamitous consequences of staring at our problems with unseeing eyes hounded me. It is time to go beyond the epidermis of the problems. Hence, I discussed the need for a revival program with D.S. Daniel Miranda and the possibility of adopting it in the district. I knew it was a big challenge and I was glad when he accepted it. On January 8, 2012, we called for an initial meeting of all churches within the District, their Administrative Pastors and the Chairman of their Administrative Councils, here at PUMC. D.S. Miranda presided in the ground breaking meeting and with God’s grace, all the representatives of the churches present pledged their support. Armed with these assurances of support, D.S. Miranda proceeded to design the concept of the Revival Program. He gave his unbounded time and talent crafting the revival program even when he was then burning the midnight oil preparing for the defense of his doctoral thesis. I like to share with you some of the trajectories of his thought. He laid down the foundational bases for revival as follows : 1. Revival is the restoration to life, be it spiritual
26
or physical, strengthening or renewing something/ someone which appears to be “dead or in the state of dying.” 2. Revival is necessary to counteract the moral/ spiritual decline of a people group and to recharge them back again, towards growth, maturity and spiritual transformation. 3. Revival reaches its fullness when: a). The Holy Spirit impacts on persons and families enabling them to turn from self towards God (2 Chronicles 7:14); b). When a congregation becomes an avenue for renewal, for unity and the “fire” to spread Scriptural holiness in the land; and c). The church becomes the focal point for societal change so that the Kingdom of God may truly be manifested here on earth. He put the need for revival of our church under the sharp scalpel of scrutiny. Again, I quote him: “ Many events are now transpiring within the United Methodist Church, situated here in the Philippines. Divisions, disunity, lack of church growth and even an impending schism are looming in the horizon. And the need of the church now is not politics nor rhetorics but an honest-to-goodness revival and returning back to God through the power of the Holy Spirit. In order for revival to take place in the local United Methodist churches and in the hearts, minds and souls of the people called Methodists, a spirit-filled revival must now happen.” Without tweaking the truth, he enumerated the problems of our church as follows :
OCTOBER 2012
1. A blurring of divisions between the believers’ secular lives and their true religious calling and vocations.
ing the truth that nothing great for the Lord is accomplished by giving up.
2. Emphasis on church temporal concerns rather than the building up of spiritual foundations like Christian maturity, Discipleship, Mission and Evangelism, and Wesleyan social justice.
This Revival Movement deserves our purposeful pursuit and I am proud to join it. If we look at the 100-year progress chart of our Methodist church, you cannot miss its dizzying mountain tops and its dreadful valleys of dead bones. Our founders and their early followers were pelted with obstacles in the beginning of their journey of faith but we saw how they were oblivious to all difficulties for they have the fathomless faith of Abraham. They were in the moral minority but the bruising bullying of the majority did not bother them. Like true leavens, like incandescent light, they
3. Lack of enthusiasm for church growth and multiplication. 4. The use of politics as a way to attain the highest positions in the church hierarchy rather than knowing it as a divine calling from God to lead God’s people. 5. Mendicancy, from within and without, and not relying on self-sustenance and faithful giving by the church members themselves to further the Kingdom of God. 6. Seeming lack of concrete mechanism to evaluate and redirect the strengths, expertise and structural facilities of local churches as they live out their faith-walks in their own life-settings and communities. This observation is also among church workers wherein their individual potentials, gifts and talents are not developed and harnessed and their weaknesses and shortcomings not properly addressed and remedied. When the news that our District was starting a revival program reached the ears of D.S. Cleto N. Pera, he asked that his District be allowed to join and with unalloyed joy we joined hands with them. Then came the numerous and long meetings to hammer out the details of the program. To dissolve the notion that this Program has a paternity of one, let me acknowledge the contributions, patience and perseverance of our Administrative Pastor, Rev. Oliver Mangubat, our English service Pastor, Rev. David Sablan, Jr., our Mission Center Pastor, Rev. Gilbert Cedillo, our Deaconess, Sharamae Cea, our Administrative Officer, Cris Asumen, Rev. Lyn de la Rosa, Sister Gloria Dimalanta and Sister Marlee Ramota. I mention these brothers and sisters because they never wearied working for the Lord, they inspire us for liv-

changed society and society did not corrupt them. Thus, they were successful in church planting, they pioneered kindergarten schools, they built hospitals, they established colleges, they were in the only business that mattered --- the business of saving souls for the Lord. As its high water mark, Methodism was a real spiritual force waging war against the growing spiritual promiscuity of the people. But alas, we appear to have lost our direction and traction in the second half of the last century. We sputtered, we flattened to a plateau and we took a downward plunge. Our growth has been stunted, we have been infected by the virus of partisan politics, and now, we are confronted by the clear and present danger of an exodus of some of our members. Surely, if we are unable to understand the physics of our problems, we may become an obscure footnote in the rich religious history of this country. How do we get out of the belly of the whale? We need renewal of our church, we need revival of ourselves, and we need it today for tomorrow is beyond our control. John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, is one of the greatest revivalists of all time. Indeed, the Methodist movement bloomed and blossomed as a renewal movement within the Anglican Church in England. History tells us that Wesley’s renewal movement proved to be one of the most momentous in Christendom. It slowly but surely put a stop to England’s moral free-fall and saved the country from the violence and vitriol of revolutions then crisscrossing and convulsing Europe. The question is, “how would John Wesley seek to renew the church if he were alive today?” Steve Harper, a Wesley scholar, explained and again I quote him in part: “First, Wesley would urge all people to personally experience Christ. Justification by faith was the touchstone of the Methodist revival. Second, Wesley would urge the Christians to a greater degree of discipline. In one of his more famous sermons, he emphasized ‘the soul and the body make a man; and the spirit and discipline make a Christian.’ xxx Wesley’s discipline was all encompassing. He did not major on minors or get hung up in the minutiae of the disciplined life. The goal for Wesley was holiness, which he called the ‘fullness of
28
faith’. xxx In order for his transformation to take place, Wesley knew that nothing less than the consecration of one’s entire self to God would suffice. He trusted the individual, in cooperation with the Holy Spirit to work out the specifics of that consecration. xxx It is clear why the Holy Spirit must be at the heart of any significant renewal today.” (Wesley’s Message for Today, pp. 131- 135). Needless to state, this is not an exhaustion of Wesley’s prescriptions on revival. Today, we are but starting a spark that we hope will ignite a fire that will revive the Methodist Church. Let us do what we can to renew our Church and revive ourselves and let us leave to God what we cannot change. Let us persevere to do the will of God no matter what others do. Yes, others may trust in chariots, others may trust in horses, but we will always trust our God, a God of new beginnings. Let me close with Psalm 85: You showed favor to your land, O Lord you restored the fortunes of Jacob You forgave the inequity of your people and covered all their sins You set aside all your wrath and turned from your fierce anger. Restore us again, O God our Saviour and put away your displeasure toward us Will you be angry with us forever? will you prolong your anger through all generations? Will you not revive us again that your people may rejoice in you? Show us your unfailing love, O Lord and grant us your salvation. Today, expect a miracle from the Lord --- the start of the revival of our Methodist Church.

WINDWATCH DON ANTONIO CELEBRATES FIRST YEAR OF GOD’S FAITHFULNESS
Windwatch Don Antonio which was successfully launched last September 1, 2011 through the initiatives of Ester Lee Paragas and Atty. Charles Michael T. Puno turned one year on September 6, 2012. Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno, council chair of Puno United Methodist Church is also a ministry partner of Windwatch Don Antonio as a prophetic prayer leader. He graciously welcomed the Thursday Windwatch Prayer Ministry to the beautiful church sanctuary. Rev. Criscelyn Navarro has faithfully provided pastoral oversight , rain or shine, to an average of 40 weekly attendees. Pastor Naomi Damian, the overall Coordinator of Windwatch, has also been the overseer of Windwatch Don Antonio since September 2011 and has also ministered to the weekly attendees as a prophetic prayer leader together with Atty. Charles Puno and Rose Regalia ( healing), Rev. Criscelyn Navarro, CJ Puno, Cookie Calaguas, Isaac Puno,III and Joseph Velasquez (word of knowledge). Ester Lee Paragas faithfully ministered to the first-timers. Mr. Isaac Puno,III and Mrs. Mary Puno are also among the pioneering group of Windwatch Don Antonio. Moreover, Mary Abigail’s Food Services, Inc. owned by Mrs. Mary Puno has provided snacks dur-
ing the fellowship since September of last year until now. Since September of 2011, the total attendance has been recorded at 130 men and women, young and old, who are seekers of God’s Word and are hungry for the Holy Spirit. Windwatch Don Antonio has also faithfully given ten percent of its weekly offering to Puno United Methodist Church. Last year, about eleven PUMC members underwent intensive study about the Holy Spirit and His ministry and were trained to minister as ushers, first-timers’ class teachers, prayer intercessors, prayer healers and prophetic prayer leaders, to name them: Ester Lee Paragas, Rose Marie Regalia, Joseph Velasquez, Chief Justice Reynato S. Puno, Charles Puno, Bella Panggabean, Laarni de Belen and Patrick Meman. This June, some more PUMC members enrolled in Integrated Bible Studies and they are: Vangie Cledera, Cris Asumen, Pastor Dave Sablan, Trixie Ilao, Maryrose Regalia, Sharamae Cea, Aimee Acosta and Lady Angela Rocena. PLANT PUNO “Years from now, your sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, who would study in the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, would read in their university-history that the PUMYF’ers once took time to uphold nature by planting trees in their campus.
Then you would proudly say, ‘I was one of them.’” – Rev. Sablan’s message which moved the Puno UMYF’ers, scholars and other youth who attended the tree-planting activity last August.
We are all witnesses of how typhoon Ondoy (September 2009) and the southwest monsoon we fondly call Habagat (August 2012) devastated most of Metro Manila. From narrow lanes to broad highways, flood was at sight while commuters find ways to reach home and residents seek help from rescuers. The young people of our church had not been blind to these scenes. So while various organizations reached out by packing up and distributing out relief goods, the PUMYF’ers decided to help by addressing the origin of the problem – negligence of environment. It happened in the early morning of August 21, 2012, a holiday. Instead of watching a movie with their barkadas or eating lunch with a special friend, the PUMYF’ers chose to go out of their comfort zones and have their hands toiled as they dig into the soil and bed some seedlings. Approximately 50 young people took part in the tree-planting activity held at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines
30
Commonwealth campus. They were inspired by the message of Rev. David Sablan who made them realize the mark that they are leaving by partaking in the activity. Their present PUMYF president, Mr. Jomar Dogomeo, also encouraged them to reflect on the analogy of Christian faith to the seedlings that they are planting: Ang faith parang seedlings. Sa umpisa mahina pa, nanlalambot at ‘di pa malalim ang ugat. Pero habang tumatagal, pagkatapos maulanan, maarawan, at maranasan ang bagyo at tagtuyot, nagiging matayog, matibay at namumungang puno. It was indeed a holistic activity wherein the young people fellowshipped as they learned to be stewards of our natural treasures. The young people who joined in the tree-planting testified that they went home fulfilled, knowing that they have made a difference. ♥ Lady Angela Rocena

BEYOND The young Noel once dreamed to conquer the skies and feel how it is to fly high by being a pilot—little did he know that he would be brought to much greater heights by being a full time servant of the Lord. Noel Samson Legaspi was born on October 30, 1962 in Manila to Lydia Legaspi and Dominador Legaspi, a pastor. As a pastor’s son, he was greatly involved in different church ministries, like the Sunday school, choir, and even the Vacation Church School (VCS). Upon entering tertiary education, he took up Mechanical Technology in the Technological University of the Philippines. Despite a seemingly clear career path, there was no direction in Pastor Noel’s life that time—he was simply going with the flow. Due to this lack of vigor, he stopped studying and worked for the Philippine Bible Society (PBS). While working, he attended a crusade where the pastor asked for those who want to serve the Lord full-time. Pastor Noel took a leap of faith by stepping forward and dedicating his life to the ministry of the Lord. After finding the Lord’s path, Pastor Noel finished his bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the Philippine Christian University in 1984, and entered the Union Theological Seminary in 1985. Indeed, the Lord took over the steering wheel of Pastor Noel’s life. He was blessed and empowered to serve in Kamuning UMC, Del Monte UMC, and Taytay UMC. He also served as the chaplain of Harris Memorial College. In these assignments, Pastor Noel understood and developed genuine commitment to the Lord’s ministry.
In 2010, Pastor Noel took a family leave. However, this temporary separation from the church did not equate with separation from the Lord and His ministry. For seven months in 2011, he worked as a producer of the Hardin ng Panalangin program in DZAS 702. With Pastor Joey Umali, the host of the program, Pastor Noel was in charge of the recording of messages, gathering prayer requests, and contacting and scheduling pastors to pray in the program. After his family leave, Pastor Noel faced what he described to be his most challenging assignment thus far. As the administrative pastor of Puno UMC, Pastor Noel is overwhelmed with the responsibilities given to him, but at the same time, he feels so blessed and privileged to serve the church. Pastor Noel prays to be able to lead the church to form “real disciples who have the hearts to disciple to others—regardless of age, gender, and social status.” With his newest assignment, Pastor Noel believes that it will be a great challenge for him to balance his personal family life and his ministry life. However, he also believes that those two ‘lives’ do not exist separately, but simultaneously. Pastor Noel knows that with the support of his wife, Wilfreda, and his son, Isaac Samuel, there continued on page 43

BASKETBALL AND BIBLE STUDY:
The Puno UMC Sports Ministry Helping the Youth Reach For The Stars
It is rare to find the words “Basketball” and “The Bible” used in the same sentence. But on the occasion that they find themselves connected in the same breath, they seamlessly blend together to provide a new age form of brotherhood, of discipleship, and of service for the Lord. The Bible is our everyday guide to living Christ-centered lives on Earth, filled with lessons straight from Jesus’ teachings, instructing us to make the most of our blessings and be the best people, the best Christians we can be. Basketball, in its purest form, is like a microcosm of everyday life the way hitting a big shot to win the game is like emerging victorious from a pressure situation in life, to never be afraid to chase greatness. Together, the two provide an avenue for spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical growth especially for the United Methodist Youth who are hungry and eager to learn, to grow, and to bond. What started as a summer activity in 2004 for Engr. Ely Suaiso, Tristan Santiago, John Benedict Samonte, Jhon Reinier Crisolo, then Puno UMC scholar and current youth Pastor Adelbert Frejas, Joseph Velasquez, and yours truly is now known as

the Puno United Methodist Church Sports Ministry, a discipleship through sports program that hopes to mold young hearts and minds into spirits on fire for the Lord, hearts brought together by brotherhood, and bodies fit for the challenge of everyday life. The group comes together every Saturday morning for Bible Verse devotion and 3 hours of basketball and brotherly mentoring led by the Youth Pastor and the senior members of the Ministry. Most of the members include current high school youth scholars of the Puno UMC who actively participate in various church activities, most notably the UMYF, the Chancel and Vesper Choirs, and the Praise and Worship Band. The youth scholars also make sure to nourish their spirit by attending the weekly Windwatch Fellowship, the T.G.I.F. fellowship, and many others. On the sports side, the Sports Ministry allowed the rebirth of the Puno UMC Basketball Team which placed 3rd in the 1st ever QC-PACE Christian Basketball League or CBL. The team is handled by the author and Engr. Edwin Ravelo, himself a basketball aficionado and one of the mentors of the young members during Bible Verse Devotion. Currently, there are

They are backstopped by sweet-shooting Jerich Ydel and Pastor Adelbert Frejas, the team captains Jhon Reinier Crisolo and Jefferson Husmalaga, also the team’s best defender. Off the bench came Whymz De Guzman, a deadshot from mid-range, the high-flying Ramil Remedillo, and prospect Samuel Zeus Frejas, the team’s knockdown shooter from three-point country. And with The Big
Difference Atty Charles Puno and Christian Laz (currently in Riyadh for work) patrolling the lane, the Puno United Methodist Church made a name for itself in basketball, showing how to be humble in victory, gracious in defeat, and always honouring God through worship, devotion,
and basketball. When the Bible and Basketball come together, the youth are inspired to dream big dreams. This is what the Puno UMC Sports Ministry is all about: to help the young ones reach for the stars and become the best sons, brothers, friends, and ultimately, the best Christians they can be.

CHRISTIAN
BASKETBALL LEAGUE
Not Your Ordinary League Basketball and Faith. Faith and Basketball. The order doesn’t matter, as long as they went together. That was the motivation back in July 2011 when a group of Christian friends dreamed of having a basketball league for the Christian Youth in QC. The group decided to form a simple Basketball Every Sunday ministry just to test the waters to see if they can push through with the league, and it became a regular basketball fellowship for the Youth (UMYF) and the Young adults (UMYAF) every Sunday at different basketball courts around Quezon city. The original players invited friends and churchmates and soon grew in numbers, that even Youth and Young adults outside QC even joined the fellowship. After many months, the group finally realized that their vision of having a basketball league can now be a reality. It happened many years back through the Christian Basketball Ministry or CBM, so the CBL was bound to be the next league to bring faith and basketball together for a greater cause. With the aim of discipling young men from the United Methodist Church and those who want to bond with fellow Christians through basketball, the group of Christian friends that dared to dream eventually became the first CBL Board of Governors. The group formulated rules that are based on our Christian values and policies and inspired by higher basketball leagues like FIBA, the Philippine Basketball Association and the National Basketball Association, but with a Christian twist: Every team must have a small Bible group session days before the game or minutes/ hours before the game, failure to have a small group session before the game suffers and automatic loss via default, each team must have2 representatives to share their small group session to the other team and vice-versa, and a 1,500 peso quota for each team was collected for league fees.
34
Headed by its Commissioner Pastor Floyd Alcantara, the CBL Board of Governors officially launched the Christian Basketball League last March 31 2012 at the Mapayapa Village 2 court, with all 11 teams (named after the 12 disciples) composed of almost all churches in QCPACE, with the teams making a covenant to each other and to God that CBL will be a Christ-centered league and that Discipleship, Sportsmanship and Fellowship will be its mandate. After 3 months of CBL, the Lord has been good to this ministry that He provided the league with sufficient funds to push through, and it had a great impact to youth of some the churches. One significant impact is that the number of UMYF boys in Churches grew, as one UMYF from Tala UMC shared; “Sobrang salamat po sa Lord sa buhay ng mga organizers ng CBL, dahil sa CBL, dumami po ang kabataan namin at marami ang nagiging active sa Church”. The unity and bonding of the UMYF from different churches became stronger as well - “Dahil sa CBL naging ka-close ko yung ibang UMYF sa church, yung mga dating di sumasama sa activities ngayon sumasama na dahil naging friends na namin dahil sa CBL” says a UMYF member from Deparo UMC. What’s amazing as well is how the CBL helped some of the UMYF to learn things that are valuable to our characters, one UMYF from Good Sam UMC shared that “Grabe yung CBL, kala ko laro-laro lang or parang liga lang na ordinary, pero hindi pala, ibang klaseng league siya kasi ang dami kong natutunan physically, mentally, emotionally at spiritually. Naturuan ako na mag-take ng responsibility at maging humble talaga. Praise God sa CBL” The Lord really works in ways that we can’t imagine, who could have thought that He can use a Basketball League to touch lives in the youth today? continued on page 43

THE PUMC CHILDREN’S MUSIC ENSEMBLE Kids love music! Watch them sing, dance and play any musical instruments and you’ll see how delightful they are to make music and perform in front of other people. We too enjoy to see them making music. Suddenly we are no longer conscious of precision and perfection. It seems like whatever they do, we are prepared to burst with our hurrahs and applause. Parents and photographers line up in front of the stage to capture the moment. Whatever there is between children and music is always magical. Perhaps that’s the reason why musical performances from children are always the most awaited and anticipated part in any program. Our church is so blessed to have children whose talent in music is innate. In preparation for the church’ 25th Founding anniversary, a Children’s Music Ensemble has been formed. The ensemble will be composed of choir, Ukulele and Angklung instrumentalists . Around forty children signified their intention to join the group for practices every Saturday for Ukulele, Angklung and Choir. Regular rehearsals started last August from 2-4pm. The children usually start with singing and dancing for an hour, then prac-
tice with the ukulele and angklung instruments for the next hour. Yes, two hours of practice and yet at the end of rehearsals, they wouldn’t miss to ask, “teacher, kelan po uli practice?” There are even stories from parents that their children are careful not to be absent during rehearsals because they don’t want to miss the next chord. Truly, their enthusiasm and energy never end. As a teacher you couldn’t be tired because the children are very inspiring to watch. I remember the first time I heard them play the very first and simplest song “Row, Row, Row your Boat”, it was like heaven. As of today, there are a lot of songs with more chords that they know. Last September 2, 2012 they had their Choir special number. On September 23, they will render a special ukulele number and on the 14th of October during the church’s 25th anniversary, they will play the musical ensemble (Choir, Ukulele and Angklung) as the prelude and postlude of the anniversary worship service. Would you dare miss it? I won’t! Esther Joy Herradura

ENTREPREYOUTH
en•tre•pre•youth (ӓn’trә•prә•yüth) n. a group of young people who manages financial resources for an income, usually with considerable initiative and risk.
With the fund-raising initiatives of the PUMYF’ers, they certainly qualify to be labelled entrepreyouth. The young people of Puno United Methodist Church are not exempted from the saying that the youth are the wellspring of ideas. This is evident not only in the program that our young leaders have been implementing but also in the most recent forward-step that they took: year-round fund-raising activities. They started with selling novelty items like key-chains, button-pins and stickers, and some food that everyone love regardless of the weather – fishball, fries and ice cream. Then they took a little more risk by investing in pre-order products like eco-bags and t-shirts. For a more secured source of funds, they have also gone into direct-selling. Their target consumers are not limited to the members of PUMC but extend to their schoolmates and co-workers. Apart from these, to maximize the power of social networking sites, they are now considering putting up an online store. These initiatives were realized to act upon the recommendations of church elders. Just as ants do not bank food when the rain is already pouring, the young people were advised to invest and save not just when big-time activities call for funds. Equipped with support and encouragement, the PUMYF’ers humbly took the challenge with the aim of having enough savings to serve more youth during Christmas institutes, summer camps and other evangelical activities. Because of this endeavour, the present youth leaders are training the younger leaders-to-be not only in the aspect of program planning, implementing and evaluation but also in the field of efficient fundraising. Surely, all these young people will carry on the good financing practices that they are now developing and later become effective stewards of their individual earnings.
36
Yes, the PUMC youth are new in this pursuit and have yet a lot to learn, but with the wellspring of ideas that they have, partnered with motivation by our church leaders and strengthened by the Holy Spirit, there is nothing new that they cannot master.♥ Lady Angela Rocena

BUSY KIDS, BUSY TEACHERS,
BUSY for the lord!
The Children’s department is always busy. The amazing part is that it is never so tiring because the fun never ends. Just the early months of the Conference Year 2012-2013, the Junior Worship had a new face. We started with Trivia Time and singing of hymns. The Extension Classes every Saturday for Kasiyahan and Garol’s area were resumed. The teachers regularly have monthly workshop. The Music Ensemble rehearsal every Saturday has started in August. Kids serve as acolyte in the morning service. Older children become the ushers and greeters every fifth Sunday of the month. And monthly they are to render a special musical presentation during the worship service. The teaching ministry to the children in Bulacan Mission Point also has started and it’s becoming inspiring every week. And there’s more to come. The children will participate in the Northwest District Motorcade on Saturday, Sept 22, 2012. The Puno is expected to make a float on the concept of Moses and the 10 Commandments. The teachers and other volunteers
put their efforts, talent and time to come up with a beautiful float. Another upcoming event and the most exciting one is the Children’s Fair on September 30, 2012. All children age 3-12 are invited to attend the fair. They are to come and enjoy for free the bubble show, puppet show, balloon twisting, face painting, magic show plus unlimited hotdogs, fishballs, kikiams, frenchfries, ice cream and cotton candies. The fun gets even more exciting when in the afternoon, the church as a whole will have a Biblympics that aims to determine the two representatives for the National Bible Quiz. The CE team has more innovations in store for the Junior Worship. We just have to anticipate and participate more because surely more good things are on its way. Learning while having great fun! That’s our motto. Growing up and old with Jesus, that’s our goal! To God be the glory! Esther Joy Herradura

Atty. Isaac I. Puno, Sr.
Judge Isaac S. Puno, Jr.
In memory of a distinguished man, whose life was spent serving his people through his practice of the legal profession, the Judge Isaac S. Puno, Jr. Memorial Foundation was established. He was young, only 42 years old when Judge Puno, Jr. went ahead of us to a place promised by our Lord Jesus Christ. Like his father Atty. Isaac I. Puno, Sr., he was a leader in the Methodist Church and one of the youngest Court of First Instance (CFI) Judges in the country. The first scholars of the Foundation were pastors and deaconesses from the Union Theological Seminary and the Harris Memorial College. The vital linkage of the Judge Isaac S. Puno, Jr. Memorial Foundation with a German foundation gave birth to the Punla Sa Kaunlaran Project. The two foundations sponsored students - the poorest of the poor - to various high schools and universities as scholars. Thousands of students have graduated from this scholarship program and are now gainfully employed here and abroad. Some are even holding managerial/ or executive positions in private organizations.
38
The spiritual growth of these young people had to be hatched and nurtured in a Church; there was no other laboratory. The coming of the Puno Memorial UMC was therefore an inevitability. It was accelerated by the passing away of the head of the Puno clan, Atty. Isaac I. Puno, Sr. on December 25, 1986. His life was totally dedicated to the growth of Methodism in the Philippines and as a fitting memorial, his family decided to establish the Puno Memorial United Methodist Church (PMUMC).

LINsanity:
NBA Star Jeremy Lin’s Testimony of Patience and Humility
For the past few Sundays I have been teaching about the Life of Jesus Christ and how He exhibited great humility and patience during His life here on earth. When I started to reflect on those traits, I realized that Patience and Humility are probably two of the hardest traits that a person can display. Just look at the news today. Look around: people bragging, people complaining and whining about the inefficiency of things. That’s just how the world is today, Humility and Patience are just so difficult to find nowadays. Until LINsanity hit. He was everywhere – headlining the news, social media sites like Facebook and Twitter, Time Magazine’s cover – just about every form of media had to have something about Jeremy Lin, apparently the best success story ever in the NBA. I had to see if he was worth the hype. I thought of his story as the second coming of the Asian Sensation in the NBA after Yao Ming retired, but man did he prove me wrong. No superstars like Carmelo Anthony and Amare Stoudemire for the New York Knicks, no problem for Jeremy Lin. Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers came into Madison Square Garden, Lin and the Knicks showed them the door with a resounding win. He was putting up insane numbers in scoring and assists, and was making his team better in every way. That’s when he really caught my attention. What sets this Asian Harvard University alumnus stand out? 1. He is a CHRISTIAN and proud of it, looking to spread the Word by inspiring people through basketball.
44
2. He got to where he is with HUMILITY and PATIENCE. HUMILITY and PATIENCE in the NBA. It is rare to find those traits in the best basketball league in the world. Stars of today and even of years past have a habit of revelling in their success. Some stars lack the patience to wait for their chance to compete for championships. In a fast paced sports industry, Jeremy Lin decided to break the norm. Lin had to battle through racism, like scouts saying Asians lack the athleticism to compete at the highest level of basketball. He was overlooked by various colleges and universities so he worked hard to make the Harvard University varsity. In the NBA he battled with uncertainty; he was cut by 3 different teams, and his story of sleeping on former Knicks’ teammate Landry Fields’ couch in his apartment is the stuff of legend, since Lin wasn’t sure how long he’d stay with any team. But he was patient and hardworking. When his chance in the spotlight came, he put on a show and led the Knicks to a huge winning streak. When he was the NBA’s newest young star, he was still humble and offered all glory and praise to the Lord. How often can you see a player in the NBA or in any other league or in any other event praise and thank God? How often do you see a player be so humble in thanking his team or other people in his success? How often do you see a player emerge from the end of the bench to be the star? J-Lin was just an exceptional testimony on how amazing God works in our Lives. J-Lin’s story is just LIN-
OCTOBER 2012
SANE, probably the most LINSANE story that I have ever heard in the history of the NBA! I was just reminded of this verse in Romans 5:3-4 “More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope”. J-Lin endured a lot of sufferings – Racism, Rejection, Failures; and I believed with those sufferings his endurance really grew that produced his winning attitude, his character of “never say die”, and just pursuing the goal. He stayed true to his faith, to his goal even though the journey has been hard (“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” – Galatians 6:9). J-Lin could have just said NO to basketball and then went on to pursue another career, after all HE is a Harvard Economics graduate. He could have worked in big offices in New York but he stayed with basketball and continued to pursue his dream. He did not give up, instead he worked even more. He treated his journey in basketball as a blessing from God, he looked at the failed try-outs, disappointing games, unguaranteed contracts as a purpose from God. J-Lin treated all of this as a blessing, a journey that eventually led him to his dream. I am so blessed with J-Lin and I truly Praise God
for his life, because I know he really inspired a lot of people, and especially millions of Christians who feel that they don’t have a place in this world, who are getting hopeless with the situation that they/we are in right now. I just really pray that most of us get a thing or two from Mr. LINcredible, that we too should never give up, we too should never stop Praising God and we too should never stop hoping for the BEST. “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you” – Psalm 39:7 LINsanity may end, his amazing plays may stop, but his story, his testimony will live forever in the hearts of many. “I am so thankful to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for this, this is my dream right here, this journey is just a blessing from God” – Jeremy Lin # 17, Starting PG of New York Knicks.
