Help the BBC bring Edinburgh Festivals to everyone, by using technology to capture the event for a wider audience.
My Approach
I aim to create illustrations to be used within a molbile phone app. The illustrations need to communicate the individual identities of each festival clearly allowing users to navigate the app. My illustrations will need to work at a variety of scales including phone screens so will need to be simple and bold. I will need to combine text and character design into cohesive image.

Research
To research this brief I looked at other festival apps, the BBC’s coverage of the festivals and the festivals themselves. The aim of the app was to help promote the festivals through an interactive experience that gives users a sneak peak at the events and provides a forum for users to share information. To do this we needed to find out what people want from an app, understand the individual identity of each of the festivals and understand how we can integrate the BBC coverage into the app.

Character Design I created character designed to communicate the individual character of each individual festival. the characters are based on performances from previous years festivals and are bold and fun. The characters will make up part of the tab for each festival within the app along with the festivals name. because of the scale they will be displayed the characters need to be simple while still clearly communicating the identity of the festival in an appealing way.

Development
Digital development investigating layout, fonts, hand drawn type, composition and colour. The aim was to refine and develop my work into simple, bold logos that capture the identity of the festivals and will work at the scale they will be used in the app. The logos should advdertise the event and encourage app users to enagage with the festivals.

Final Outcome The final outcome of this project is made up of an app, an animated demonstration of how the app works and a kinetic text animation advertising the app. My role within the group was to create illustrated logo’s for each of the festivals featured on the app as well as logo’s for additional tabs such as travel, tickets and accomodation. The illustrations are included in all of the final outcomes. due to the nature of the brief and the skill sets of the memebers of the group it was important that I finished my designs quickly so that they could be implemeted into each of the outcomes I made a gif to show how the tabs on the app will indicate there is currently live festival footage available JOSEPH WHARTON
