What I aim to Communicate: - The narrative of the book - The emotions of the characters - Ideas relating to identity and belonging - An appropriate tone of voice for the target audience To an audience of: - Pre- school children aged 2-4 - Parents - Nursery teachers
Inspiration: - Chris Haughton - Keith Negley - Jon Klassen I researched children’s book illustrators that use character, colour and shape based illustrations to communicate emotive narratives.
Process Character Design
I used my visual journal to develop characters concentrating on facial expressions and posture to communicate emotion. I created a range of storyboards, refining them to fit a 32 page book layout and clearly communicate the book’s narrative. I developed scenery to interact with the characters creating interesting composition and an immersive landscape. Book Layout/Storyboarding
Landscape
Development I experimented with colour and composition to ensure the characters are the focal point of each page. I needed to communicate as much of the narrative as possible through my illustrations to keep the text simple and appropriate for the target audience.
Outcomes Cover/Poster
My final outcomes maintain a consistant aesthetic using shape and texture. The illustrations are created digitally and could easy be applied to a range of products and promotional material.
