GROUND FLOOR COMMON SPACE

PARENTS+GRANDPARENTS’ BEDROOMS

The entrance leads on to the kitchen and the adjacent dining space where all the users gather frequently

Since the location experiences only average temperature throughout, the roof is open made of steel frame and it only gives heat directly to the ground floor from above which inturn is reduced heat when reached there

presence of a tree in the centre c o u r t y a r d ensures shade and coolness

terracota roof tiles to reduce heat

use of second hand furnitures to ensure the new generation understands the value of tradition

white brick walls which makes the ambience peaceful and simple

wooden panel floors to reduce heat

Private spaces for the parents and grandparents are located on the farther end of the building occupying 2 floors. Both the spaces are connected with stairs and therefore to reach parents’ room, should go through the grandparents’ room which hinders the free flow

mattress on floor as per the practice of the saigon

use of simple wooden stairs to reduce use of bulky materials

The ground floor used by the whole family to gather around and spend time each other the family dining courtyard can see the children playing on the hammock top of them

The facade is a simple vertical form with steel frame part and the entrance is through a wooden double panelled door which leads to the welcomeing space. The whole house can be divided into two parts ie, private spaces and common spaces. The private spaces are again classiffied for parents, grandparents and children separately. They include bed rooms for parents, grand parents, children, and play spaces for children. Such a division of spaces makes the movement of the users easily and reach their target places faster

USERS

parents and grandparents children are the major users

CASE STUDY INFERENCE

wooden double panelled door

the central hammock space where children play together

an opening with steel frame and growing creepers to see the visitors

a cubic wooden space where the children could climb and play peacefully

use of less materials for facade makes the impression as simple as the user wanted it

the stairs are narrow such that only 2 children can pass through at the same easily

The division of spaces according to the users’ needs was an inspiring element that was used as an important aspect in the design development of the residence. Each users or couple in the residence were given their own zones where they could do most of their daily activities. Also combined spaces for interactions were also given Zone for Das and Divya on first floor Interactive activity or common zone for guests or family members Zone for Arjun and Sarah

The middle volume of the residence design acts as a common space for everyone and has visual connectivity from every space in the design whish is an ispiration from how the net space at the centre of Saigon house acts

CHILDREN’S SPACES The building was built majorly considering the children’s needs as per the user client wanted. Therefore about half of the whole house is dedicated solely for the children and takes form as their play spaces, bed spaces, gathering spaces, reading spaces, storage, etc.

major wind from SW to NE slighly affected by adjacent buildings but can be enhanced by landscape strategies

local wind from east backwaters mostly affected by the adjacent apartment building

providing openings on both east and west face allows entry of wind from both sides and creates good environment

WIND ROSE DIAGRAM

humidity absorbing plants to be installed the house or other design strategies to reduce the formation of humidity due to the entry of moisture containing air from the east backwaters

temperature is moderate and february to april has maximum. design strategies like sloping roofs and green coutyards can further reduce the temperature

more vegetation can be added to avoid soil runoff or erosion in the site

DRAINAGE drainage line rainwater flowing

SITE

Providing a modification in the landform or builtform as a slope from the northeast corner of the site can allow free flow of rainwater into the drainage lines offsite or rainwater recycling methods can be adopted to the underground or provide water seeping ground materials

BUILDABLE AREA

3m 2m

Considering either one of the side facing NW or SE as the rear, a setback of 2m can be taken so as to reach the minimum compulsory setback rules of KMBR from side roads and so the side facing NE need only 1m setback

The front setback space can be utilised to introduce landscape features so as to give the visitors a welcoming environment

SHADOW ANALYSIS MORNING 8:30am

The morning sun from east is half blocked by the adjacent tall commercial buildings which come in the path of the sun reaching the site

SUMMER SOLSTICE

AUTUMN FALL

NOON 12:00pm

Sun in the noon falls largely into the site as only a small portion of the rays are blocked by adjacent buildings. design strategies like sloped roof to be introduced to reduce heat

WINTER SOLSTICE

SUN PATH EVENING 5:30pm

The low heating sun rays of evening is fallen filtered through the coconut trees lined up in the west front of the site

The sun in the locaation follows a path of east to west at a small angle of inclination towards south which leads to forming shaded regions due to casting shadows from the adjacent tall buildings into the site

shadows from the coconut tree line forms filtered lighting into the site

Providing openings in the facade allows entry of indirect evening lihght into the house. further providing filteration of light like jali creates an ambience inside

shaded regions due to the vegetation (suited for open cooling spaces)

facade facing the east side allows a clear view for the pedestrians

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT THROUGH SITE INFERENCES

Buffer trees or bushes can be provided to reduce the noise disturbances from the neighourhood that enters the house

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT SHEET PATH-SPACE RELATION AXIAL PATH

The axes formed by the planform connects multile spaces with pathways

CONNECTING PATH

There are many pathways that connect within the indoor spaces and also indoor to outdoor spaces

The linear axial path that connects living, dining, and kitchen

The connecting path between indoor spaces

The axial path that connects the indoor gaming and outer dining spaces

The connecting paths between indoor and outdoor spaces

The axial path that connects gym space and bedroom for Arjun and Sarah

HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL PLANES

CONNECTIVITY WITHIN AND WITH CONTEXT

Horizontal planes like floors, roof and mezanine are mostly direct stacking up of the plan throughout the design The terrace and the balcony spaces are made like extrutions of the major horizontal planes

The vertical planes consists of the fenestrations or openings of the building

The living dining kitchen open spaces togetherly connect visually and physically with the swimming pool area and it connects visually to the upper level due to a cutout on the ceiling.

There are many small and large openings in the building which are positioned in response to the site features and the user specifics like some users need their spaces to be fully immersed in nature like Sarah whereas user like Das doesnt require too much openings

The terrace, TV space and the balcony are connected together visually and physically so that they have direct connection to outside nature. The indoor game area is connected to the outdoor dining space visually and physically to enable a smooth flow of activities.

The gym space is connected visually to the outdoor nature and gathering space for ambient atmosphere while working out.

BODY IN SPACE The outer dining has the direct visual and physical connections to the bike garage for friends gathering

The bedroom for Arjun and Sarah has direct visual and physical connections towards the outer garden space where Sarah has space for reading and water the plants meanwhile Arjun can work in the garage maintaining the bikes.

The swimming pool has visual and physical connection with the guest gathering space and both those spaces together brings energy to the visitors when they enter the site
