Beginning with aggregating a small object, a system of logic is created and expanded upon with successive projects. DESK SCREEN Design begins with a single unit at the smallest scale. Forming a lattice, these units join together to produce a studio desk screen. The goal is to encourage focus on one’s own work while having the ability to interact with nearby peers.
The device is designed to frame areas likely to attract birds, while removing the street from the bird watcher’s view. At an interval along the path, the occupant is aligned with a set of panels oriented to their position. BALLOON PAVILION In the final project, the logic of the unit is adapted to create a pavilion for an annual balloon event in Forest Park, Saint Louis. Surrounding a field, the system creates a ring-like path that grows into facilities such as concessions and restrooms, seating areas, and event spaces for use during the balloon launch, and for other activities throughout the year.

Using a logic set up by the unit’s potential for joinery, the system frames views of individuals at their desks, while blocking view of other’s workspaces. BIRDWATCHING DEVICE In the second project, the logic of the system is scaled up to become a framing device for a park promenade.
Unit to System Logic
A walk through a wooded prairie has many opportunities for bird watching, despite a nearby road.
