Slow and Steady Wins the Race message. What was that message?
I had a friend in yeshiva who was (by his own admission) âthe first in the ⍠××ת ×××ר׊âŹin the morning and the last to leave at nightâ. Learning from early morning until late at night is indeed highly virtuous and commendable. In fact, the great tanna Rebbi Eliezer ben Hurkanus said of himself, âno-one ever got to the Beis Hamedrash before meâ and âI never left the Beis Hamedrash when there was anyone thereâ; i.e. he was always the last to leave. Perhaps this report of Rebbi Eliezer ben Hurkanus may have actually been what inspired my friend. The trouble was that during the day, the young man was nowhere to be seen. Itâs great to do âgreat-soundingâ things, but if thatâs all you are doing, well... This week, we have a replay of the events that took place at the giving of the Torah on Har Sinai. The Ribbono Shel Olam chose to deliver us the Torah amidst much drama: there was the piercing sound of a shofar, mighty thunder, clouds and darkness. We canât accept that these were âŤ×â×⏠simply bells and whistles designed for maximum effect. This was a Divine event. Everything had a
Now, letâs say I were to ask you: of the two aforementioned sounds, âŤ( ק×××ת ××רק××âŹmighty thunder and lightning) and âŤ×§××⏠âŤ( ׊פרâŹpiercing sound of a shofar),
⍠××רק××âŹget no mention at all! The ⍠××× ×קרâŹsuggests that the two types of sounds represent two types of people. There is the superficial, easily impressionable person and then there is his thought-out, methodical counterpart. The ⍠ק×××ת ××רק××âŹsymbolise the shallow, skin-deep approach â the line of thinking that itâs the big, showy things that we do that bring success. But they donât. Thereâs lots of fanfare, but nothing to show at the end â it wasnât ââŤâ×Ö¸ ×ָק⏠in the first place and before you know it, it isnât there at all.
which is more dramatic, which one is more likely to instil fear, which of these will create a greater impact? I think the answer would be the âŤ×§×××ת ××רק××âŹ.
Yet, take a look at the original account â in ⍠â פר׊ת ×תר×âŹand youâll notice two things. Firstly, the ⍠ק×× ×Š×¤×¨âŹis described as being ââŤâ â×Ö¸ ×ָק Ö°×× Öš×âŹvery strongâ, while the ⍠â ק×××ת ××רק××âŹthe far more spectacular sounds â are given no such accolades.
Secondly, three ⍠פץ×ק××âŹlater, the ⍠ק×× ×Š×¤×¨âŹgets another mention, Ö° this timeââŤâ×Öš××Öľ× ×Ö°×Ö¸ ×־ק Ö°×× Öš×⏠â getting even stronger, while the âŤ×§×××תâŹ

The ⍠ק×× ×Š×¤×¨âŹhowever, whilst far less dazzling, is âŤ×Ö¸ ×ָק Ö°×× Öš×âŹ, itâs there to stay. And not only does Ö° it stay, but it is ââŤâ×Öš××Öľ× ×Ö°×Ö¸ ×־ק Ö°×× Öš×âŹ, it gets stronger and more robust with time. Itâs true that we need drama to keep us going through the humdrum; but thatâs not what builds us. Itâs the steady consistency of the non-dazzling, unspectacular, ordinary roles and responsibilities of daily life that join together to build a spectacular, dazzling and everlasting edifice. Because after all, slow and steady wins the race. M
